Breath-taking views and follies perched high on the valley sides were all designed to impress an 18th century visitor with the fashionably romantic abbey ruins a jewel in the garden’s crown. Follow the high ride path to a surprise view, find dramatic vistas from Octagon Tower, happen upon a hidden Banqueting House, and call into Studley tea-room for an afternoon tea or light lunch. HISTORIC HOUSES AND GARDENS IN EAST YORKSHIRE The beauty of the Yorkshire Wolds and the surrounding landscapes have always attracted people to the area, with the result that it’s home to some of the UK’s finest stately homes and gardens. Sewerby Hall and Gardens Extensive gardens, a museum, a mini zoo, and regular exhibitions, concerts and events, Sewerby Hall really does have something for everyone. The Grade I listed early Georgian house, with its stunning cliff-top location, was recently refurbished to allow visitors to see it as it would have been around 1900. It’s also home to an important collection of memorabilia about the Hull-born aviatrix Amy Johnson. Burton Constable Hall An Elizabethan gem set within 300 acres of natural parkland, Burton Constable Hall has an extensive collection of fine furniture and art. You can also meet ‘Constable Moby’ – the skeleton of a 58-foot long sperm whale stranded on a nearby beach in 1825 and believed to have been the inspiration for Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. It is now on display in the Great Barn.

Burton Agnes Hall Described as one of the 20 best English houses, alongside Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and Chatsworth House, Burton Agnes Hall has for 15 generations been home to the same family, which has filled it with treasures ranging from spectacular carvings commissioned when the hall was built between 1598 and 1610 to French Impressionist masterpieces. Stewart’s Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum Home to the glorious national water lily collection, the gardens at Burnby Hall have been awarded the prestigious Yorkshire in Bloom Gold Award for the past seven years. The gardens also feature a rockery, stumpery, a Victorian garden and a secret garden. The Stewart Museum is dedicated to the extraordinary life and collections of 20th century man of action Major Percy Marlborough Stewart.

Choose the same style for every obelisk so that the garden looks planned and stylish. 3 If you are paving an area of your garden it’s worth considering using more than one material to make it more interesting. Borders and sections picked out in paving of a different size or colour can break up the monotony and make patio spaces more intimate. Two or three paving types repeated throughout the garden works well.

5 Narrow flower beds are always harder to look after as plants constantly need to be cut back to keep them in check. It’s much better to have some wider borders if possible – even if it means losing some of the lawn. Wide beds allow space for a range of plant heights and for easy care shrubs that can be allowed to grow without clipping.
