Although evidence of a settlement predates Roman times, the most significant settlement was Derventio, a Roman fort and commune on a 22 acre site next to the current location of the County Bridge. The principal roads and streets of Norton follow very closely and, indeed, were part of the Roman lines of communication. The discovery of ruined kilns has shown that Norton had a thriving pottery industry in the 3rd century. At the heart of Norton is Church Street and Commercial Street, the main shopping area, bustling with activity and shops, consisting of a good mix of local shopping and businesses including restaurants and public houses. Norton continues to be one of the principal centres in the country for the horse racing industry. Its vibrant horse racing industry is evident within and on the outskirts of the town, having many trainers and stables. Horses are put through their paces at the Langton Wold and Highfield Gallops, and early risers will come across strings of horses in and around the town coming from and going to the gallops. The annual Malton Stables Open Day allows visitors a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of Malton and Norton’s successful racing industry. Over 20 trainers across Ryedale open their doors to the public each August, along with demonstrations and displays.
Nestled in the rolling Yorkshire countryside, Norton and adjoining Malton are the perfect place to experience the freedom of the great outdoors and take advantage of the many leisure activities available. Cyclists in particular are blessed with both the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Yorkshire Wolds that offer excellent day rides on back-roads and country lanes, many of which are accessible by train from Malton station. Look out for the Bike Skies Bike Rides and Cycle Rides in the Howardian Hills publications available from Tourist Information Centre’s, local retailers or online at www.visitryedale.co.uk. Malton and Norton Golf Club is a 27 hole parkland golf course and is the sporting home of Simon Dyson, the internationally known golf professional. The course, accessed from Welham Road, has an excellent reputation and attracts visitors from a wide catchment area. Norton and Malton are well served by public transport, the town’s bus and railway station are both situated in Norton. The railway station is on the TransPennine Express Route with fast trains every hour running from Scarborough to York, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Norton is also home to the Coastliner bus service with regular services running from Leeds, through York and Norton out towards Pickering, Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, in addition to a number of other local bus routes. Both bus and rail links offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy the town’s shops, eateries and local attractions without the need for a car.

At the bottom of the market place is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway station, where you can board the 18-mile heritage steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park. The beautifully restored engines call at Goathland station, as featured in the Harry Potter films and ITV’s Heartbeat, before joining the mainline railway at Grosmont for a further 6 mile journey on to Whitby on the Yorkshire coast.
For those wanting to know more about the history of Pickering, Beck Isle Museum’s collection of local photographs by Sidney Smith and a fascinating collection of artefacts reveal the social history of the area, mainly from the Victorian era. Pickering Castle lies to the north, a splendid example of a 12th century motte and bailey construction, and which was once also a royal hunting lodge. The traditional Monday market, a monthly farmers’ market, a daily indoor market plus car boot sales held regularly in and around the town offer excellent opportunities for bargain hunting. The local independent shops, selling quality goods and in many cases local and fair-trade produce are complemented by excellent cafes and hostelries. Pickering’s antique shops are legendary and the auction rooms offer both value and entertainment. A range of activities and events are organised by the town’s attractions and community groups. The Pickering 60s Festival in June features live music from both headline and local bands with parades, classic vehicles and much more. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is host to the very popular War Weekend in October which revives the 1940’s glamour, look, feel, smells and sights with parades, re-enactors and much more fun! Positioned between the coast, forest, moors and York, Pickering is an attractive base for exploring this popular area of North Yorkshire.
