HISTORY COMES ALIVE

English Heritage have even more reasons to visit some of Yorkshire’s finest historic sites this summer with the launch of a new visitor experience at the ever-popular Rievaulx Abbey as well as an adrenaline-fuelled programme of events across the county. Rievaulx Abbey Revealed

From the end of May, the jewel in the English Heritage crown of Yorkshire abbeys will boast a new visitor experience, bringing to life the rich past of Rievaulx and the story of the people who lived there. A new museum featuring previously unseen objects from the abbey will provide a different view of this once thriving medieval powerhouse and a Family Trail will help bring history to life for younger visitors!

Fish and chips are a Great British institution, whether eaten straight from the paper or on a plate, with a glass of wine or mushy peas, you can’t beat a good portion of Yorkshire Fish and Chips.

No visit to The Yorkshire Dales is complete without tucking into the award winning fish and chips served at Bizzie Lizzie’s in Skipton. Discover some of the finest beaches in the UK and more than 100 miles of stunning coastline, just waiting to be explored. Buckets of fun The coast has something for everyone, with all kinds of attractions waiting for you to visit. Discover The Deep in Hull, one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world, home to a whopping 3,500 fish including Europe’s only pair of green sawfish, spectacular sharks and rays. Visit the Scarborough SEA LIFE Sanctuary and take a fascinating journey from the coastline to the depths of the ocean through twelve themed zones. With a 25 metre six-lane swimming pool as well as a Splash Zone pool with fun slides and waterplay features, there will be plenty of fun to be had when the new East Riding Leisure Bridlington opens in time for the summer season. Or head to Scarborough and discover a gigantic wave pool, four state-of-the-art long water rides, 35 degrees of heat and 14,400 seconds of the best fun you’ll ever have at the brand new Alpamare water park, due to open this summer. Or if you’re feeling brave, get out on the water with Saltburn Surf School and have a go riding some waves along this spectacular stretch of coast. A splash of history Yorkshire’s coastline is steeped in history, from the magnificent ruins of Whitby Abbey set high on the cliffs above Whitby, to the medieval fortress of Scarborough Castle, entrenched with 2,500 years of turbulent history. Take a ride on one of the most historic seaside miniature railways in the UK at North Bay Railway or soak up some history at The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, home to a superb collection of original exhibits about one of Yorkshire’s most famous sons. Full of fascinating architecture and

cultural history, take a trip to Bridlington Old Town, a charming pocket of Yorkshire and the real star of the recent 2016 Dad’s Army film. Back to nature Watch as 250,000 birds bring the coastline alive at RSPB Bempton Cliffs. See all the action from specially created cliff-top viewpoints and on a calm day, you might even spot a grey seal just off shore. Flamborough’s fantastic Living Seas Centre is packed with information about the North Sea’s amazing marine wildlife, with arts and crafts activities on offer to keep younger ones amused. In between Scarborough and Whitby you’ll find The Grainary, the perfect place to eat, sleep and explore. Come and visit a vast array of farm animals including micro pigs, goats, ducks and rabbits. Meet 30 sled dogs at Pesky Husky and try your hand at Husky Trekking, a sport which gives you the opportunity to drive your own team of dogs on a two wheeled scooter around a purpose built trekking course, which includes two exciting down-hill sections. Summer nights Visit the seaside this summer and enjoy some fantastic events happening up and down the coast. Head to Peasholm Park in Scarborough on 26th August and hear the Scarborough Spa Orchestra perform classics from the movies with a spectacular firework finale. At Scarborough Open Air Theatre, the legendary Bryan Adams will take to the stage on 8th August and the Vienna Festival Ballet will perform Swan Lake at The Spa, Bridlington on 5th June.

The Yorkshire Festival is the UK’s newest international festival. Building on the resounding success of the first edition in 2014, it promises world premieres and UK exclusives at spectacular venues across Yorkshire. Here’s just a flavour of what to expect at what is sure to be 18 days of world class music, dance, theatre, visual art, outdoor performances and one or two art forms there probably aren’t names for yet.

To mark Mr McFall’s Chamber’s twentieth anniversary the group revisits Astor Piazzolla’s operita, María de Buenos Aires. Directed from the bandoneón by Victor Villena, the performance features a large on-stage band of strings, flute, guitar, piano, and percussion, three incredible vocalists, and a speaking chorus.

Fire Garden 23rd – 25th June, Valley Gardens, Harrogate The centrepiece of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Harrogate International Festivals, the Fire Garden is a magical and sensory experience from internationally renowned French company, Carabosse. The beautiful Harrogate Valley Gardens will play host to a fiery spectacle of sculptures and installations.

The Handmade Parade 26th June, Hebden Bridge This year’s spectacle will have a truly international feel as the local parade team of world-class artists, musicians and performers are joined by Russian artists from Cardboardia – a fictitious young country without territory, but with new strong traditions, in a unique artist residency co-commissioned by the Yorkshire Festival.

The world’s biggest disco ball is coming! At 10.33m in diameter, it’s the same size as a three storey house or two adult T-Rex. Suspended from a crane above Duke Studios in Leeds while thousands of people dance to the same track, at the same time, at parties across Yorkshire - this fantastic project aims to set a new world record. Throughout Yorkshire, from nurseries to nursing homes, we want everyone to throw a party. Commissioned by Yorkshire Festival.

Place Des Anges 2nd July, Queens Gardens, Hull As night falls across the city of Hull, angels begin to appear, high up on the rooftops. They take to the air, magically suspended above the crowd below. The angels start to glide down into the audience, releasing white feathers which float across the sky. Once the last angel has taken flight, the crowd will be showered with a spectacular explosive display of feather fireworks. Yorkshire Festival and Hull UK City of Culture 2017 present Place des Anges as the finale of the Yorkshire Festival, in association with Amy Johnson Festival.
