LIQUORICE The Liquorice plant was brought to Pontefract by the Dominican Monks in the early 16th century. The production of liquorice products continues in Pontefract today, the most well known being Pontefract Cakes - invented in the town by chemist George Dunhill in the 18th century.
YORKSHIRE FORCED RHUBARB The Rhubarb Triangle is a ninesquare-mile triangle between Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford famous for producing early forced rhubarb. West Yorkshire once produced 90% of the world’s winter forced rhubarb. Wakefield Council now holds an annual Rhubarb Festival in February.
