A feast of festivals This year will be another really exciting one in Yorkshire and our What’s On guide is jam-packed full of all the essential events you need to know about so you can be sure not to miss a thing! Make the most of the wonderful outdoors and blow away some winter cobwebs at one of the many outdoor festivals and shows that take place across all four corners of our magnificent county and of course there are plenty of sporting events where you can cheer from the sidelines - or even get involved yourself. From literary celebrations, to music festivals, to agricultural shows and food and drink events, there’s something for people of all ages and interests – and they’re a fantastic way to make the most of Yorkshire in 2018.

Easter’ical fun...
There’s something wonderful about how families come out of hibernation round about now and with Yorkshire boasting a whole host of egg-citing Easter events, the little ones won’t get bored even for a minute. Over the Easter weekend, you can follow all kinds of Easter treasure hunts and trails. From 30 March to 2 April, look out for all of the Dragon’s eggs at the Easter Dragon Egg Hunt at The Moors National Park Centre in Danby or the animal eggs at Sutton Bank National Park Centre. Follow a nature trail and search high and low for clues in the garden at East Riddlesden Hall near Keighley on their popular Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt, where bunny has been up to his old tricks again... it’s up to you to follow his clues. Cherchez les Lapins Blancs! Find the White Rabbits on an Easter trail with a French twist at the Yorkshire Air Museum near York. Answer the questions as you explore, then collect your own yummy white chocolate rabbit! Over on the coast, simply work out the riddles to find the lettered eggs and win a Cadbury’s Creme Egg at Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park and be in with a chance of winning a £10 Thorntons voucher. A short distance away, it simply wouldn’t be Easter without a

Matthew Wilson Perfect planting workshop
Collaborating with TV and radio gardening expert and award winning Welcome to Yorkshire RHS Chelsea Flower Show designer, Matthew Wilson, Tong Garden Centre are the first centre in the North of England to host Matthew Wilson’s Gardening School. His workshops are a great mix of practical work and theory. The Planning Perfect Planting workshop is on 24 April, where Matthew will share his knowledge and reveal certain tricks of the trade. trip to Amelia’s Chocolate in Scarborough, where you can make your own Easter Egg. Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster has a special event from 1 to 3 April. Celebrating Alice in Wilderland, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass, the fun includes three magical days of live shows, craft activities, games and more. In Barnsley, join the cook in the Victorian kitchen for a special Easter session and create all manner of edible delights to take home at the Children’s Sweet Treats event at Cannon Hall on 3 April. Skipton Castle Woods Eggventure Excitingly, there is a giant golden egg to find, which the Easter Bunny has hidden somewhere in the grounds at Burton Agnes Hall & Gardens near Driffield, from 30 March to 8 April. Take part in an Easter trail around the grounds, solving clues while exploring the extensive gardens and once the conundrum has been solved, every child will receive an Easter treat.
Join the fairies and wizard of Rusticus Theatre as you seek out clues. Using your trail sheet, search for items in the woods and once complete, collect your handmade chocolate treat.
Families can have a fun day out at Springtime Live at the Great Yorkshire Showground on 31 March. Around every corner you’ll find activities for children of all ages based around spring, new life, food, farming and the countryside. Back by popular demand, Mr Bloom and his fellow gardeners from the allotment will be back to entertain the little ones. Enjoy ‘A Cascade of Colour and Beauty’ at Burnby Hall Gardens Tulip Festival from 29 April to 13 May. Whilst best known for their impressive National Collection of over one hundred varieties of Hardy Water Lily, the Tulip Festival attracts thousands of visitors to Yorkshire’s unique gardens in the spring. Over 14,000 tulips, comprising over 30 varieties, will be on display. These can be seen formally displayed in tubs throughout the gardens and in the numerous flower beds throughout the site.

Filey Folk Festival Catch over 150 acts performing at the Filey Folk Festival in 8 venues across the town all within a few minutes’ walk from one another. Best of all, the festival is a free event so you can enjoy the addition of Monday to the festival, dubbed as ‘survivors day’. As if all that wasn’t enough, as an added bonus, on the 5 May, the Tour de Yorkshire will pass through Filey enabling you to get a glimpse of the riders whilst enjoying your folk fix. Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival Join us for a celebration of music from London - to Venice - to Vienna presented in some of England’s finest churches, including St Mary’s Church, Beverley, inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s March Hare in Alice in Wonderland and the award winning heritage centre, St James’ Warter. Highlights of the festival include rising stars Il Quadro Animato (left), Lux Musicae London and the University of York’s 24. North York Moors Chamber Music Festival
Britney Spears is coming to Scarborough. That sentence alone should be enough to alert music lovers to the strides Scarborough Open Air Theatre has made over the last couple of years alongside promoters Cuffe & Taylor. Boasting an all-star lineup (including the Princess of Pop herself) and improved staging facilities, this promises to be an even bigger year for the largest open-air theatre in Europe. Lionel Richie, Take That’s Gary Barlow, the reformed Steps, Irish rockers The Script and tenor Alfie Boe are all confirmed with many more to be announced in the coming weeks.
International musicians express their talents in an atmosphere of friendship and celebration and perform in extraordinary historical churches, nestled within hamlets, dales, remote moorland and coastal villages. Eleven concerts adapt to the specific acoustics of each church, building a story-line to portray the overall theme. Each venue contains its own ambience of mystery which the audiences and the music bring to life.

Uniquely set in one of the UK’s finest Elizabethan stately piles, Burton Agnes Hall, over 25 bands will provide a weekend of Jazz and Blues from manicured lawns and inside an ornately carved Great Hall. York Early Music Festival The internationally acclaimed York Early Music Festival had a bumper year in 2017, when it celebrated its 40th anniversary. Attracting the best musicians and performers from around the world to present musical performances from the 12th - 18th centuries, the 2018 festival takes place in historic venues in the medieval City of York. The theme for 2018 is Power and Politics and highlights include Liz Kenny (right), Brecon Baroque directed by violinist Rachel Podger, Gallicantus directed by Gabriel Crouch with the Rose Consort of Viols and The Sixteen directed by Harry Christophers. There is also a strong focus on emerging young talent.

Whitby Soul Weekender Since 2002, the Whitby Soul Weekender has offered up the best in Motown, Northern and Modern Soul that Yorkshire has to offer. Annually packed with the North’s best loved DJs. Offering you daytime sessions plus soul nights spread over three days which allows for a relaxing weekend break as well as the time-honoured soul experience. The Soul Weekender offers up the chance to see the sights that Whitby has to offer in contrast to many Friday to Sunday event weekends spent entirely at the festival.

Yorkshire’s agricultural shows are an important part of the summer months and you don’t have to be a farmer to enjoy these traditional events. From those with an interest in show-jumping to brass bands, fell running to fairground rides and animals to cooking schools, everyone will find their own highlight.

Situated within a natural amphitheatre, Ryedale Show on 31 July has eight rings running throughout the day, exhibiting prime cattle, horses, sheep, pigs and goats, alongside sections for fur and feather, produce, WI/YCA and children’s classes together with sheep dog trials and a dog show.
Thornton le Dale Show on 8 August, is considered to be the best and friendliest of the County’s traditional rural shows. Not only is it the high spot in the annual calendar for locals, but it also acts as the focal point for our many friends throughout the country and indeed further afield.
Held in a most beautiful setting in Rosedale Abbey, in the Milburn Arms field, Rosedale Show on 18 August has all the wonders and treats of a traditional village agricultural show. Visitors can enjoy seeing livestock, horses, fresh produce, flowers, vintage tractors and outdoor sculptures.

Egton Bridge, in the North York Moors National Park, is the setting for the Egton Show. The 22 August will see a wrought iron and farrier display, a farmer’s market, plus all the usual horse, cattle, sheep, goat, ferret, fur and feather classes. There will also be bee keeping, produce and handicraft and the children’s sections.
Stokesley Show brings you great live shows on 22 September, from horse trials to quad bikes, cattle, show jumping, vintage tractors, stunt biking, dog shows and much, much more! There are numerous food and drink stalls serving local produce and exhibitions of paintings, photography and culinary delights.
Traditionally marking the end of the agricultural show season, enjoy a wonderful display of the finest livestock, produce and crafts on 24 September. Expect to see sheep dog trials, a dog show, show jumping, livestock classes, cookery demonstrations, trade stands and an exhibition cricket match.

The Great Yorkshire Show The 160th edition of The Great Yorkshire Show on 10 to 12 July is set to be spectacular! Over 130,000 visitors and 8,000 animals flock to the Great Yorkshire Showground every year for the three-day show, making it one of the biggest in the UK.

While the show has agriculture at its heart, there’s also entertainment, shopping, live music, interactive cookery demos and a professional catwalk fashion show - including a one-off celebrity special.

Animal magic Thousands of animals compete from cattle to sheep, pigs to pigeons and the show finishes with one of the most prestigious show jumping classes in the country, the Cock O’The North competition.
Get involved Held near Leyburn, the Wensleydale Agricultural Show on 25 August, has an extensive range of competitive events for livestock such as sheep, cattle, horses and poultry. There will be over 60 classes in poultry alone, ranging from large fowls to true bantams and an egg section. Alongside horticultural and handicraft classes, dry stone walling demonstrations and Wensleydale sheep competitions.

Whitby is preparing to push the boat out for one our area’s most iconic figures by holding a weekend-long festival. The Captain Cook Festival – 250th anniversary celebrations take place on 6 - 8 July.

Spectacular festival
The 250th anniversary of the momentous First Voyage of one of the world’s greatest explorers is being celebrated in Whitby. James Cook learnt his trade as a seaman in Whitby and his famous vessel HM Bark Endeavour was built there. To mark 250 years since Cook set sail on his First Voyage of discovery to the South Seas, a town-wide celebration will see a host of events take place throughout the weekend. Giving a feel for life at sea in the 18th century, two tall ships will take pride of place in Whitby’s historic harbour especially for the festival.
Maritime adventurers can step back in time and climb aboard the Spanish hand-built tall ship Atyla to experience life at sea and re-live the Battle of Trafalgar on the smallest ship in Nelson’s fleet, the replica warship topsail schooner, HMS Pickle. A new way to navigate and explore Whitby will be provided by the Cook ‘Tintamarresques Selfie’ tour, which will comprise a series of cut-out Cook characters, located across the town. Whitby Abbey and Pannett Art Gallery will be exhibiting maritime artwork and memorabilia throughout the weekend.
Visitors can also test their sea legs on board the Bark Endeavour Whitby, an authentic replica of Cook’s HM Bark Endeavour, 40% of the ship’s original size, sailing from Whitby along the coast to nearby Sandsend. Endeavour Wharf will become home to a live cooking theatre where local chefs will bring history to life, giving an 18th century twist to modern cuisine using food and produce that would have been eaten on board. Visitors will also be able to enjoy live music, street theatre and sea shanties alongside local ales and a grand finale firework spectacular.

Times of Change: Women and Confectionery York’s Chocolate Story has an exhibition from March that celebrates the Times of Change: Women and Confectionery. Since the confectionery industry began in the 17th century, women have played a major part in shaping it. From Mary Tuke – who created a successful cocoa business against all adversity and paved the way for companies such as Rowntree’s to Mary Ann Craven’s humbugs and French almonds. Throughout the centuries, many women played their part in making the industry what it is today. This new exhibition will be made up of unique historical artefacts and fascinating testimony from those tenacious women who worked in the industry.

Star Wars at Experience Barnsley May the toys be with you from 21 April to 15 July at Experience Barnsley. This touring exhibition displays one of the country’s finest Star Wars collections of memorabilia, toys and posters owned by collector Matt Fox. The toys and collectables from this period, including X-wings, lightsabers, posters and figures will all be on display in this magical exhibition for families of all ages to enjoy together.

Moor Impressions The beautiful Inspired by… Gallery hosts changing exhibitions of work by artists and makers who draw their inspiration from the landscape, life and colour of the North York Moors National Park. During May and June, Moor Impressions is an exhibition by The East Anglian Group of Marine Artists, who tour the North York Moors annually and have amassed an amazing body of work inspired by the area, which is on display. There will also be a small framed postcard exhibition, one from each of their artists. Dont miss the Hidden Landscapes exhibition on the 21 June, which will explore hidden places of the North York Moors National Park. The exhibition will focus on walking, collecting and attachment to significant objects.
Scarborough Tattoo Show There will be over 80 award winning tattoo artists on hand to cater your every whim all weekend, so if you have an itch for a one-off piece of tattoo art or fancy extending your ink collection, the Scarborough Spa will be the place to be!
Stuck for ideas? There is something happening in Yorkshire every day this summer. Here is our pick of some of the more family friendly happenings. Sci-Fi Scarborough Scarborough Spa 21 - 22 April, from 10am Sci-Fi Scarborough is back for the fifth year in the beautiful Victorian Spa Complex. Expect the quirky quarter mile of Scarborough Spa to be packed to the rafters with a fantastic mix of guests, panels, table top and video gaming, fan film theatre, cosplay competition, geek pub quiz, a trading hall, movie prop and model displays, Minecraft Gaming Hub and lots more!
Behind the Scenes North Yorkshire Moors Railway 5 - 7 May, 9am - 5pm Explore ‘Behind the Scenes’ at this popular heritage railway line, where you will be able to take a sneaky peek at areas usually closed. This event will showcase all the work that goes into keeping the wheels turning. Check out the engine sheds at Grosmont and learn about the infrastructure and bridges at Goathland.
British Museum Treasures Come to JORVIK JORVIK Viking Centre, York From 8 April 2018 The first items to be featured include treasures from the Halton Moor Hoard, coins of Canute as king of both England and Denmark and a unique die, used to strike coins towards the end of his reign. Weaponry, including spearheads and a ‘pattern-welded’ sword found near Windsor will also be on display.

Grassington Festival 15 - 30 June Now in its 38th year, Grassington Festival is an annual multi-arts and music festival, with a combination of performances, visual arts and live music. Every year, it brings internationally renowned acts and high-quality performances to Grassington for 15 days of music and arts. Fill your calendar The North York Moors is a pretty special place. History and nature have combined to produce an amazingly vibrant landscape, rich in heritage and wildlife. With its fabulous countryside, heather moorland, woodland and rugged Jurassic coast, the North York Moors National Park is one of Britain’s most treasured places. As the days grow longer, the North York Moors once again becomes a hive of activity. This is the time for getting outdoors, enjoying long lazy days at the North York Moors’ coast, exploring hundreds of miles of pedal-powered freedom across the moorland and filling the calendar up with family, music and food-lover festivals. Kick start the spring by spending your days between the sandy beaches of Runswick Bay, Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay, where you can find secret picnic spots and boat trips that’ll test your fishing ability. For water buffs, head to Sandsend and Whitby to try your hand at surfing, paddle boarding and sea kayaking. Not forgetting Saltburn’s eight miles of golden sand, which is a much needed rest station after a coastal walk along a stretch of the 109 mile Cleveland Way National Trail. But, the fun doesn’t stop there, both coastal and countryside offer heaps of adventure for adults and kids. Fossil hunting, rock pooling and beach combing can be found along the Jurassic coastline, or head inland and have a go at horse riding, cycling trails or skimming through the treetops with Go Ape! at Dalby Forest. By late summer the heather is in full bloom, creating a bright pink and mauve carpet that stretches for mile after mile. This beautiful place is a haven for all sorts of wildlife and creates the perfect opportunity to slow down and take your time as you meander through the moorland paths. ParkFest, 22 July A one day bonanza event! ParkFest is the biggest event in the North York Moors annual calendar. There are all sorts of events, workshops, family attractions and children’s activities to discover in the beautiful grounds of The Moors National Park Centre, Danby.
National Parks Week, 23 - 29 July Come and explore, discover and celebrate the special qualities of our National Parks. Family activities include an amazing Geocaching Treasure Hunt - using a GPS unit, enjoy a 2-3 mile walk searching for clues in hidden boxes.
MoorFest, 29 July Enjoy a whole host of free activities at our annual moorland event. It’s a celebration of country life, culture and heritage at Sutton Bank National Park Centre.

Go behind-the-scenes with exclusive tours, join historical characters from the past, take a look at literary exhibitions or even visit the famous Georgian High Street that appeared in the recent ‘Dad’s Army’ film. Legends in Yorkshire Making Thunder Roar: Emily Brontë Brontë Parsonage Museum, all year Marking the bicentenary of Emily Brontë’s birth, this insightful exhibition looks at the life of one of the greatest writers in English literature, about whom surprisingly little is known. A fascinating collection of Emily’s possessions, writing and artwork is paired with specially commissioned contributions.
‘Whitby in the Time of Cook, the Making of a Great Seaman’ Exhibition Captain Cook Museum, Whitby 10 February - 4 November This exhibition is an insight into the maritime history of Whitby, which was once one of the major ship-building centres in Britain and played a key part in training young apprentices up to ready them for the sea.
Shakespeare pop-up Theatre York, 25 June - 2 September A pop-up replica of two Shakespearean theatres with room for almost 1,000 spectators will be built in York’s historic centre. The temporary structure modelled on the Globe and Rose theatres is planned for York Castle Museum car park, opposite the 13th Century Clifford’s Tower. Sat within a Shakespearean Village, you can experience some of Yorkshire’s best food and drink.

There’s no time like the past. The Festival of Vintage celebrates the music and lifestyles of the 1930s-1960s. Enjoy live music on two entertainment stages featuring bands and singers, classic vehicle displays, fashion shows and talks, a vintage beauty parlour and make do and mend craft workshops. There are also vintage dance lessons and over 200 of the UK’s very best vintage businesses selling vintage fashion, vinyl and home items.
This annual festival sees a multitude of activities taking place all over the borough. Take part in events, talks, walks and workshops to celebrate the richness and variety of heritage in Doncaster. Visit the famous Georgian High Street that appeared in the recent ‘Dad’s Army’ (2016) film for a 1940s festival full of entertainment and fun. With vocalists, military bands and a planned Battle of Britain flyover, there’s something for everyone at this quaint coastal location.

Building on the theme and popularity of Joséphine Bowes – A Woman of Taste and Influence, a recent exhibition which paid tribute to the woman who was a driving force behind the Museum’s creation, this in-focus display highlights her influence as a socialite and devotee of fashion. Exhibits include a newly conserved lavender silk evening bodice worn by Joséphine, reconstructed by renowned historical and theatrical costumier Luca Costigliolo.

Moors and Shores Adventure Cross Sportive 15 April Kick starting the Cycling Weekly / MBR adventure cross season, the diverse Yorkshire countryside gives riders a taste of all terrains. From gravel roads to exposed moorland and narrow lanes, it offers some interesting but not expert level climbs.

Ravenscar Coastal Half Marathon 20 May A challenging half marathon, sprinting away from the Ravenscar town hall 700 metres above sea level before taking in some magnificent coastal views heading towards Scarborough. For those not feeling the challenge of the 13.1 miles, there is a 10k event running on the same day.
Yorkshire Beast 27 May Cycling over 200 miles and with 146,000 feet of climbing across the North York Moors National Park and Yorkshire Dales in just one day. This sportive to challenge even the most experienced of riders, Camp Hill near Bedale will play host to the Beast and two nights of camping is available from the 26 May. White Rose Classic 24 June The White Rose Classic, organised by Ilkley Cycling Club, is the premier Yorkshire Dales sportive for road cyclists. With a total of seven named climbs on offer throughout the White Rose Classic routes – of which there are three different lengths on offer – this can be an enjoyable ride or a test of strength and experience depending on how it is tackled.
It’s Grim Up North Various dates A series of events throughout Yorkshire all year round. From Duncombe Park, Helmsley to the beautiful Victorian mill town of Saltaire, there is a Grim Up North race for everyone! Betfred World Championship Qualifiers English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, 11 - 18 April See the qualifying rounds of snooker’s Betfred World Championship in April. The Coleridge Road venue will host the qualifiers of the sport’s biggest tournament, with all players ranked outside the world’s top 16 in action.
ITU World Triathlon Series Leeds, 9 - 10 June 2018 Leeds will once again play host to the prestigious ITU World Triathlon Series this year. Last year, over 70,000 spectators cheered on the world’s best triathletes including local heroes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee who celebrated a second successive one-two finish in Millennium Square as the city received a true triathlon takeover. The World Series is the pinnacle of triathlon competition as the best of the best will race from Roundhay Park to Leeds City Centre.
UK Windsurfing Championships North Beach, Bridlington 16 - 17 June Decided over six events with the second round being on Bridlington’s North Shore. Racing is normally held quite close in to the shore, therefore offering spectators an excellent view of the race area throughout the day. Join hundreds of windsurfers and spectators as they line the magnificent North Beach Promenade and watch the competitors battle the elements and each other to land one of the most hotly contested titles in UK windsurfing.
