Drawing up a new garden
Horticulturist Louise Hampden offers some of her top tips for making the most of your outdoor space. 1 T here are three main design elements you need to consider: What the garden will be used for (children’s play, relaxation, parties, growing veg and flowers); its aspect (shady or sunny, overlooked or secluded); and how you want the garden to look (formal or informal). 2 C ut out magazine pictures of schemes that you like and stick them onto a large piece of card, adding to it gradually, including plants, furniture, layouts and even sheds – and soon a mood and preference for certain colours and materials will emerge.
3 M ake sure you consider how your garden will look from the various windows and doors of the house. Key plants and focal points can be lined up to give the best view from the window. 4 G ive your plants plenty of space. Mean borders don’t work. Allow a generous area for growing plants. They need space, and that means 1.5m or even 2m from front to back. 5 W hen planning seating, make sure you know the direction in which the sun rises or sets, ensuring your seats are positioned to your requirements – maybe so you can view the sunset, or catch the morning sun if you want to have breakfast in the garden. 5
Hints & Tips 1
A right mix up!
When planning your vegetable garden, why not try combining strongly scented herbs, such as lavender, thyme and mint,
2 Give ‘e m some space

as well as brightly coloured flowers, such as marigolds and nasturtiums to create a plant community. This is a creatively organic way to deter pests and attract beneficial insects, such as bumblebees, hoverflies and ladybirds to your plot.
Growing ornamental grasses can be very rewarding as they give a long and diverse season. When it comes to planting, spacing is all important as many can be deep rooted and moving them once established may be difficult. Consult the plant label or a book to see what size the grass will be three years after planting and space accordingly.

3 D on’t be afraid to ask You can pick up some amazing tips and tricks by visiting gardens in your area. You will see what grows well and don’t be afraid to ask the name of plants you admire. Gardeners love to be asked for advice! Vanessa Cook Stillingfleet Lodge

4 F lower power To force a plant into flower you can stress the plant by letting it dry out, the plant then thinks it is dying, pushing out flowers to reproduce and keep growing. This is a good way of getting stubborn plants to flower. Jeremy Palmer Head Gardener Burton Agnes Hall
5 Festive fragrances Hodsock is filled with surprising and wonderful smells in February – the secret is to plant sarcoccocca (Christmas Box) and winter-flowering honeysuckle amongst the snowdrops and hellebores for a truly spectacular winter garden filled with sweet fragrances. Lady Buchanan Hodsock Priory Gardens
5 Weekly watering When it is very dry, don’t splash a bit of water on the garden every night. Instead, give plants a really good drink once a week. For shrubs and trees up to a whole 2 gallon Watering Can may be applied slowly or use a hosepipe, just turned on, trickling around the base. Mark Jackson Head Gardener Newby Hall 8

Tasty tips
Many species of fruit grow very well in the UK climate and are worth considering. Growing vegetables from seed is cheap,
very rewarding and surprisingly quick, and fresh herbs can be grown in containers or the ground. Sara Jane Mason RHS Community Development
7 Future proof Planting trees is an investment for the future. Choose carefully for your site and give your tree a lot of TLC as you plant it. Spread out its roots into a generous hole and give it plenty of water until it’s fully established. Dr John Grimshaw Director of The Yorkshire Arboretum
