The mission the Festival team and I have been given, which we accepted with pride and set about with relish, is to establish Yorkshire Festival as one of the leading and most significant programmes in the country. Every two years, Yorkshire Festival will fill the county with distinctive and world class artistic experiences, presenting brilliant Yorkshire artists and companies, alongside the very best from around the country and across the globe.

Welcome to the second Yorkshire Festival. In 2014, during the first Yorkshire Festival, hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed a spectacular range of events, across the county, across all art forms. This year we want to do even better, as we welcome artists and performers from all over the world as well as celebrating the very best of Yorkshire’s own extraordinary artistic community. Festivals are about the audiences just as much as the performers, so please come and join us for what will be a wonderful celebration of creativity. Together we can be part of something truly memorable.

INSTALLATION

A magical feast for the senses will transform the centre of Harrogate. A destination famed for water and its spa history is transformed by the element of fire as part of a spectacular display created by internationally renowned French company, Carabosse. The centrepiece of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Harrogate International Festivals, co-commissioned by Yorkshire Festival and with help from Harrogate Borough Council, the Fire Garden is a magical and sensory experience, set within Harrogate’s Valley Gardens. The beautiful park and gardens will play host to a fiery spectacle of sculptures and installations on a grand scale and visitors will be invited to explore this unique space, enjoying a gloriously atmospheric feast for the senses from these Gallic alchemists. Using flaming flower-pots and cool cast-iron contraptions, Carabosse, with music resonating throughout the night, re-imagine familiar spaces as otherworldly fire-gardens. Roam through blazing landscapes, pass by hand-made metallic inventions and be warmed by red-hot charcoal as these musicians, dreamers, metal-workers, storytellers and old-soul fire-brands create a fairground of fire where you can set your deepest imaginings free. The 9th annual Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade returns on Sunday 26th June, bigger and with a Russian twist. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spectacule will have a truly international feel as the local parade team of world-class artists, musicians and performers are joined by Russian artists from Cardboardia â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a ficticious young country without territory, but with new strong traditions, in a unique artist residency co-commissioned by the Yorkshire Festival. On June 26th, at the Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade, Cardboardia will celebrate the opening of its first Embassy on English soil. This residency will be the first stage of a two year project throughout the North of England which will result in creating a Cardboard Town in England. The Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade will start at 12 noon with a mini-festival in Calder Holmes Park from 1pm - 4pm. In the lead up to the parade, open costume workshops will run from 4th - 23rd June 2016. Cardboardia will also be coming to Kirklees, watch out for further news. Channelling the unsung beauty of East Africa. Yorkshire Festival presents a European premiere. The Nile Project brings together forward-thinking musicians from the 11 countries across the Nile River Basin, channeling the unsung beauty of East African traditions to create the new sound of a shared Nile identity. Inspired by Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, Egyptian musicologist Mina Girgis and Ethiopian-American singer Meklit Hadero created this concert experience to raise awareness of the cultural and environmental challenges along the world’s longest river. In the collective’s collaborative compositions, resonant harps and lyres from up and down the river have learned new musical modes, combining the polyrhythmic styles of Lake Victoria and the pointed melodies of the Ethiopian highlands with the rich modal traditions of Egypt and Sudan, that support vocals in more than ten languages. Some of the music shows roots in Arabic culture, some in East African; the words are in various languages, the voices gentle, declamatory and harmonious. The Nile Project is the performing side of a collaboration that also includes education in music and environmental issues, raising awareness of the entire Nile River Basin as an ecosystem. Get on your dancing shoes and join Big Disco for a party under the world’s largest disco ball! The world’s biggest disco ball is coming! At 10.33m in diameter, it’s the same size as a three storey house or two adult T-Rex. Suspended from a crane above Duke Studios in Leeds while thousands of people dance to the same track, at the same time, at parties across Yorkshire - this fantastic project aims to set a new world record. The track will be chosen by public vote from a top ten tracklist, selected by DJs, Leeds legends and music industry professionals. Throughout Yorkshire, from nurseries to nursing homes, we want everyone to throw a party. As part of the project, cardboard boxes containing all you need to create your own ‘Little Disco’ will be distributed to get the whole county dancing. A playful and visual spectacle to enchant audiences of all ages. As night falls across the city of Hull, angels begin to appear, high up on the rooftops. They take to the air, magically suspended above the crowd below. The angels start to glide down into the audience, releasing white feathers which float across the sky. Each angel has their own unique character and style and as their aerial antics become more boisterous, the clouds of feathers thicken, creating a sense of awe and wonder. Once the last angel has taken flight, the crowd will be showered with a spectacular explosive display of feather fireworks. The angels leave the audience with a dream-like sea of feathers in which to dance and play after the show. NO QUIET PLACE

Soundscapes and sculptural installations throughout The Tetley’s galleries. No Quiet Place explores the environmental and incidental noise which proliferates the physical, sensorial and psychic spaces within our 21st century world. No Quiet Place demonstrates the tension noise creates in everyday life, with some works attempting to control and make sense of it, while others find delight in the background clatter, relinquishing control and embracing cacophony. The exhibition features an intergenerational mix of pioneering artists based in the North of England and internationally, who make mixed media, sound-led artwork. STANLEY SPENCER

The Tetley Weekender is inspired by No Quiet Place.

A major survey exhibition of one of Britain’s best loved painters, Stanley Spencer. Presented during the 125th anniversary of Spencer’s birth, the exhibition brings together over 70 works spanning his entire career, including rarely-seen self-portraits and extracts from his diaries and writings offering a unique insight into his life and work.

Two days of live performances, hands-on workshops and artist talks. Working with musicians, visual artists and guest-curators, this microfestival of creativity takes noise as a starting point with a programme ranging from live music for the under-fives to experimental sound art for all. During Saturday daytime there will be plenty to keep little rockstars happy, with a special child-friendly gig and hands on noisy workshops. The Saturday evening will feature a great lineup of cutting edge artists and musicians taking club rhythms to strange new places. Then join us on Sunday for a relaxed brunch, artist performances and chilled tunes in the Bar & Kitchen. The Tetley Weekender is an annual micro-festival kicking off summer on Leeds’ South Bank. An exhibition celebrating life in Spencer’s richly detailed paintings.

The exhibition explores the seemingly conflicting themes that Spencer fused together in his richly detailed paintings, of religion and sexuality, work and leisure, nature and industry, highlighting Spencer’s distinctive view of everyday life. As Spencer himself put it, ‘I am on the side of angels and dirt’. Other highlights are the monumental paintings from the Shipbuilding on the Clyde series created during World War II, and the Empire Marketing Board 1929 series of five paintings, which will be reunited in their entirety for the first time in 36 years. This offers an unparalleled opportunity to see in full this impressive pentaptych on the theme of ‘Peace and Industry’, as several private collectors now own the five works. The garden is a place of peace, tranquillity and safety. This summer, two parks in Bradford will host new Indian gardens, painted directly on to the paving by the acclaimed Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi. But this Garden Within A Garden does not provide refuge from conflict, or a haven from the outside world. Instead, inspired by the history of the million-strong British Indian army that fought in the First World War, Qureshi transforms a public space into zones in which light and dark mix, horror and hope collide. Qureshi lives and works in Lahore, Pakistan, a region that as part of the British Raj enlisted a huge number of Sikh, Muslim and Hindu soldiers to fight on the Western Front. Their experiences of being at war in a distant land and in a hostile climate inform the work that this leading international artist will present in the Mughal Water Gardens in Lister Park, next to Cartwright Hall Art Gallery and in

City Park, Bradford city centre. There will also be a number of associated events. Qureshi – who uses a delicate style inspired by the history of Pakistani and Indian miniature painting to reflect upon contemporary conflicts and divisions – illuminates the complex interplay between Islamic and European history and culture. These vibrant works remind us that war creates division, but can also bring people together. The Brutalist Playground, an exhibition by 2015 Turner Prize winner Assemble and artist Simon Terrill, explores post-war design for play. Originally commissioned by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), this touring exhibition has been reimagined for the international Brutalist icon that is the Park Hill estate in Sheffield. Featuring a brand new commission, it investigates the materiality and visual language of postwar landscapes through an immersive, climbable and conceptual landscape.

GOD’S OWN COUNTY

SEW WITHIN

God’s Own County is a collaborative event from Sheffield based arts collectives The Collaborators and The Professors. Huge projections will be shown on the front of Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. The Professors present work developed from the idea that their Yorkshire home presents a contemporary utopia whilst The Collaborators will create work developed from a regional response to the theme of God’s Own County.

Sew Within will see communities come together to create new useable items such as aprons, cushions and bags for life. Workshops will be held at two community centres, involving up to fifteen women from the local area with the aim of encouraging recycling whilst also improving skills. The sessions will involve designing and sewing a finished product to take home, with the hope that these techniques will be passed on from generation to generation.

OPERA FOR THE UNKNOWN WOMAN A bold re-imagining of the operatic form. 300 years from now. World economies have failed. The human vestiges of earth are scattered and defenseless, pursued by flood and famine. In 2016 a group of women from around the world are drawn together by an unearthly power, to forge a future for their planet. Written, directed and co-composed by award winning sound artist, Melanie Wilson, with critically acclaimed Polish composer Katarina Glowicka; Opera for the Unknown Woman is a bold reimagining of the operatic form, weaving together theatre, contemporary classical music, electronics and film. An incredible operita by Astor Piazzolla - The King of Tango. To mark Mr McFall’s Chamber’s twentieth anniversary, the group revisits Astor Piazzolla’s operita, María de Buenos Aires. This work represents the very summit of Piazzolla’s nuevo tango. The performance features tenor Nicholas Mulroy and tango singer Juanjo Lopez Vidal as el duende, the narrator of the colourful spoken text by Horacio Ferrer, and Valentina Montoya Martínez as María herself. Directed from the bandoneón by Victor Villena, the performance features a large on-stage band of strings, flute, guitar, piano, and percussion, three incredible vocalists, and a speaking chorus of “brothel keepers, spaghetti makers, brick-layers and psychoanalysts”.

The performance features original film of Buenos Aires street-life by the young Argentine film director Geraldine Comte. This moving backdrop guides the audience through the poetic Spanish libretto. Following the performance, the streets of Buenos Aires will come to life in this stunning venue, as the audience are invited to take to their feet, dance the tango and truly embrace the Argentinian atmosphere. The Mayor is in a cold sweat. News has reached him of an imminent visit from a Government Inspector. Surely the only possible solution is bribery; it seems to have resolved many a sticky situation for the Mayor and his team in the past! But a simple case of mistaken identity leads matters to spiral hysterically out of control. Could it be that they have met their match in the complicated business of deception? Gogol’s satirical masterpiece is a hilarious riot of corruption, lies and greed that has lost none of its original bite.

The Government Inspector is part of Ramps on the Moon: a ground-breaking touring project that signals a step change in disability arts provision in the UK. Bringing together seven major theatre companies, including Sheffield Theatres, it will change the way theatre made by and for D/deaf and disabled people is seen. These companies are committed to putting D/deaf and disabled artists and audiences at the centre of their work, to accelerate positive change, and stimulate awareness of disability issues within arts and culture. Whilst all the elements are there – a slipper as pure as gold, hair as yellow as corn, magic beans and of course the curse of a witch – this is no conventional fairy tale. North Yorkshire’s music groups are invited to take part in Play Far Away Day which will see remote spots in North Yorkshire, from prehistoric rocks to heather moorland and rugged beaches, playing host to live music performances. Organised by youth music development charity, NYMAZ, the aim of the day is to demonstrate that everyone should have access to music, no matter how rural their location, whilst also fundraising for youth music projects across the county. Rising from the ashes of the Congolese band Staff Benda Bilili, Mbongwana Star formed in 2015 with a sound, and an album From Kinshasa, unlike anything that went before in the fertile Congolese music scene. Echoing rhythm patterns, heavily distorted vocals and feedback mix with gorgeous vocal melodies and distinctive Congolese lilt.

Them Two Dance have embarked upon a journey astride their tandem bicycle to encourage the occurrence of Random Acts of Kindness in Yorkshire.

The project encourages children’s deep engagement with art, celebrates their voices, showcases their responses and develops critical appreciation, communication and writing skills.

Them Two Dance ask for your help in this series of interactive pop-up duets. They ask you to be kind, to be random, and to help them if they get a puncture. This quirky and funny duo have been performing together since 2012, making high-quality, physically demanding dance work specifically for the outdoors and unusual spaces. Help them change the world, one random act of kindness at a time. This work has been co-commissioned by Yorkshire Dance Amplified, The Civic Barnsley & Yorkshire Festival with a commitment to working and developing audiences for outdoor work in Yorkshire and the North of England. A new sonic artwork about identity, place and participation, using the noise of crowds to question what it means to belong as an individual and as a mass by capturing the 3D sound of a major football game and recreating its unique sonic architecture in public spaces. Using a custom built array of microphones positioned around the stadium, an exact spatial replica is captured of the scale and location of individual voices and the roar of the crowd in 3D space. Rebuilt in the city; transporting the noise of the match for replay in a central location. Navigate the roar of the crowd, walking around it as a sculpture, a massive piece of public art, a playful interaction for thousands of people of all ages. Reprogramming sound in civic and public space, and harnessing the popularity of football to create dialogue in unexpected places. Expect the unexpected from this leading German composer pianist. Known for his compelling live performances, Hauschka channels the spirit of John Cage’s prepared piano. Opening up his instrument, he playfully performs public operations on its innards using ping pong balls and gaffer tape in search of new colours and textures. Lately he has taken inspiration from house and techno and employed electronic processing to take these sounds even further from their acoustic origins.

WORLD ISLAND Belgrave Music Hall and Headrow House are two of Leeds’ most forward thinking venues. World Island is a bespoke programme for the Yorkshire Festival curated by SUPER Friendz, creators of some of the North of England’s most forward thinking events from sold out shows from art exhibits to all night raves. June 23rd sees the return of DJ, producer and multi instrumentalist Quantic to the Belgrave Music Hall with his unique take blending world music with jazz, funk and hip hop. Headrow House hosts one man percussive explosion, NAH, on Saturday 25th June, programming blistering beats from behind his drum kit, as well as psychedelic folk collective Trembling Bells on June 28th.

One of the most highly anticipated events will be the return of Saul Williams to Yorkshire for the first time in nearly a decade, playing Belgrave Music Hall on Friday 1st July. A multi instrumentalist, poet, author, actor, producer and collaborator with the likes of Kanye West, Jay Z, Trent Reznor, Rick Rubin and Allen Ginsburg to name just a few, his latest record MartyrLoserKing is already being lauded as one of the best of the year a totally unmissable experience. For the last 15 years A Hawk and A Hacksaw, a band from New Mexico, have immersed themselves deeply in the musical traditions of Eastern Europe, Russia and Turkey, resulting in a sound full of colour, grandeur and gut-wrenching romance. The richness of dance numbers featuring accordion and violin, contrasts with eerie and finely balanced ballads and dulcimerladen instrumentals. Accordionist and drummer Jeremy Barnes, who has spent the last two years touring with indie rock legends Neutral Milk Hotel, and

One woman’s journey to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. From an artist whose previous work includes building a giant dress out of cake with over 2,000 people in a shopping centre for two days and sharing stories with people inside a 7ft ball of hair, Salt is sure to be an unmissable performance. Selina’s work is playful, participatory and intimate, focused on the politics of identity, and how this defines our bodies, lives and environments.

In February, two artists got on a cargo ship, and retraced one of the tours of the Transatlantic Slave Triangle - from the UK to Ghana to Jamaica, and back. It was a long journey backwards, in order to go forwards. This show is what they brought back. Commissioned by Yorkshire Festival, Theatre Bristol and MAYK. PROTO-TYPE THEATER A combination of original text, film and classified intelligence. “I want you to know what’s happening…” From what might be a news desk, an office, a bedroom, a bunker under a mountain or a theatre, two people reporters, senators, freedom fighters, or just… well… concerned citizens like you - think about what it is to speak up, speak out, blow the whistle and lift the veil. A Machine they’re Secretly Building charts a course from the Top Secret secrets of WWI intelligence (via the moon, 1972’s Chess World Championships, a disco in Oklahoma and the cafeteria at CERN) through to 9/11, the erosion of privacy, Edward Snowden and to the terror of a future that might already be upon us.

Proto-type have combined original text and classified intelligence documents with film from digital artist Adam York Gregory and music and sound design by Paul J. Rogers, to vent their frustration at the insidious machine of surveillance. A Machine they’re Secretly Building is about how we got to the point where our governments are spying on us and how that’s changing who we are. A unique snapshot of contemporary Yorkshire. Award winning writer, artist and Huddersfield postman Kevin Boniface takes to the road to produce a series of monologues (audio and visual) about the people and places he encounters on his rounds. This will build into a unique snapshot of contemporary Yorkshire where One Direction perfume for under a tenner is not to be sniffed at, where the man on the bus confides he could never eat Weetabix without sugar and where there is an underlying murmur of people in tight shorts commenting on the warm weather to come.

This downloadable content will be delivered via a series of prompts and triggers in post offices and on postboxes, trains and buses. Starting out from his Huddersfield home and workplace, Kevin will journey to his hometown of Holmfirth, visit Grassington during the Tour de Yorkshire, ending up in the most contemporary of the market towns, Hebden Bridge. The Slambovian Northern Soul Circus of Weekender Dreams Direct from the USA, a rootsy psychedelica that Maverick Magazine calls “Mightily impressive and hugely original rock from the cool end of Americana”. Melodic avant-folk with an exotic instrumental arsenal and a palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge cinematic anthems. Pocklington Arts Centre 22nd June 2016 at 7.30pm. If you don’t know the stunning guitar playing of Eduardo Niebla, you’re in for a treat. Organised by the V&A, it will display more than 200 pairs of historic and contemporary men’s and women’s shoes by 70 named designers, including Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Christian Dior and Prada, many from the V&A’s unrivalled collection. The Bowes Museum is the only UK venue outside London that will stage this exhibition. The Bowes Museum Runs throughout the festival.

Brontë 200 & Poetaster 2016 sees the bicentenary of the birth of Charlotte Brontë. The Brontë Society is marking this with a year-long programme of events and activities at her former home of Haworth Parsonage. 2016 also marks the launch of Brontë 200, a programme celebrating the bicentenaries of each of the Brontë siblings. During the Yorkshire Festival, Poetaster: the Charlotte Brontë Festival of Lyric and Verse presents an extravaganza of performance and entertainment, focusing on the latest talents from Yorkshire and the north of England. SUMMER SOLSTICE Celebrate the arrival of summer with an exclusive after-hours curator-led sunset viewing of the first major exhibition in the UK by Swiss artist Not Vital. The gallery tour is followed by a special sunset viewing in James Turrell’s Deer Shelter Skyspace, inspired by Not Vital’s sculpture House to Watch the Sunset.
