Much better performance than PAC APF is a multi-spectrum coagulant and flocculent APF will reduce the oxidation demand, and reduce chlorine consumption much more than PAC, aluminium or a polyelectrolyte. Essential in order to remove crypto oocysts. 10% of public pools with have oocysts of Crypto and / or Giradia in the sand filters, measured by DNA analysis. 3500 cases every year in UK pools, approx 1000 in Germany (Eurosurveillance, Volume 12, ) APF contains NoPhos to remove phosphate, if there is zero phosphate in the water bacteria and algae can not grow. APF removes ammonium, but this works best when ACO is also added to the water. APF also helps prevent bacteria growing in the solids retained by the filter
How does it work ? •
Most of the particles and dissolved components, have a – ve charge.
•
APF and NoPhos neutralise and give them a +ve charge
•
The +ve and -ve particles attract to form larger particle that are then easier to filter out of the water.
•
AFM filtration with APF will remove most particles down to 1 micron and most sub-micron particles as wells as many chemicals in solution.
A high +ve or –ve zeta potential will give a colloidal suspension and turbid water. A neutral zeta potential around pH 7, will provide the clearest possible water. It is therefore important to apply the correct dose of APF in accordance to the Goldilcocks equations, not too little or too much but just the right amount in accordance to PAWS

ZPM is essential for APF coagulation reactions The ZPM forms nano-bubbles that explode on the surface of oocysts, bacteria, fungi, yeast and viri. The high shear forces will kill crypto, or damage the oocysts and predispose them to oxidation by chlorine. The act of moving water, changes the way the water behaves. Comparative trial •
Comparative trials conducted by the French National Government Organization, using 2.2m diam filters, one with AFM and the second with French crushed glass filter media.
• Biofouling. – AFM active filter media did not become fouled by bacteria. Garo filter media became a biofilter. The bacteria then caused coagulation of the filter media and worm-hole channelling of water through the bed, resulting a substantial deterioration of filter performance.
• Pathogenic bacteria – Vibrio is one of the main fish pathogens, Vibrio can also cause Cholera in people as well as a range of other diseases, Vibrio spp is found in many pool sand and crushed glass filters in high numbers. High levels of Vibrio bacteria were recorded after the Garo filter media. The trial needed to be terminated before harm was inflicted on the fish.
• Back-wash performance – What goes into a filter must come out in the back-wash. Nausicaa recorded much solids and organics matter in AFM back-wash, this tells you that AFM performance is far superior.

of chlorine oxidation demand by AFM is 22%, sand is approx 10% and crushed glass is 8%. AFM is therefore twice as good as sand of crushed glass.

Conclusion AFM is 2 to 4 x times better performance than sand or crushed glass, and is the only media that allows us to reduce the Pool Performance Factor to under 1
