F

or me, the fall offers an opportunity to rest senses that are nearly frayed from the frenetic pace of city life.

One is always alert in urban environments to dangers real and or imagined. Fall provides an easy reason to escape to the countryside, slow down, or simply be inspired by the leaves showing off vibrant displays of color.

In a hurried life that becomes immune to the sounds of crickets, birdcalls, or the smell of fresh rain, fall escapes provide a chance to hit the pause button.

The splash of the ocean meeting the shore is more enjoyable now that the crowds of summer have gone.

The sight of sand crabs scurrying, the cool touch of sand, darkness so solid it envelopes you, and the smell of a wood-burning fireplace are reasons to appreciate summer’s last gasp.

I hope you will develop a sense of autumn wanderlust after reading the articles within about the Shakespeare Garden of Central Park and the Bed & Breakfast Inns. I hope you’re able to visit the Finger Lakes region where the hillside forests can take your breath away at its beauty.

Travel as therapy?

A

ccording to Berkeley Young, a national travel industry expert, the rate of growth in leisure travel has sustained the travel industry through the recession and is now increasing. Nearly six in ten U.S. adults intend to take at least one leisure trip between July and January 2014”.

We concur with Young as we’ve seen an increase in calls and emails inquiring about last minute getaways, African Safari’s and specials to European destinations like Paris and Rome.

These type of travelers are much like me, a last minute planner who also seeks value and is taking shorter trips—some closer to home.

Young also stated that “Americans have surpassed the Japanese as the hardest working society in the world”.

After the economic turmoil that started in 2008, I’m sure most would agree with that assessment. Research has shown that if a worker takes less than 10-14 days of vacation, they don’t really get the rest they need. People who work hard are more stressed than ever and travel is a great form of therapy.

People want to get away from debt, the never ending political debates (anyone tired of hearing about the Affordable Healthcare Act?) and the despicable incidents of religious violence taking place around the world.

Still, travelers today have so many choices of things to do, but less time to do them. There are thousands of museums across the country, 40 national heritage areas, hundreds of national parks and thousands of historic landmarks, destinations and attractions around the country that are readily available to an overworked populace.

The art of travel is enriching and I trust you’ll enjoy the stories in this issue and become motivated to join us on one of our therapy sessions.

Where roses, thistle and Mulberry Grow

It began,

as ideas do, as something great.

The mission on this day was to experience the Shakespeare Garden of Central Park, a four-acre slice of wonder named after William Shakespeare, the famed English poet and playwright who made fun of rich and poor, powerful and meek with equal abandon.

Always a wonder of intricate beauty and design, Central Park holds secrets in shadows and ancient markings on the grounds from the glaciers that gouged out most of Manhattan millions of years ago.

Take in the sights and sounds of New York City’s Central Park via a leisurely stroll along Park Avenue between 40th and 79th (New York blocks are really short so it wasn’t as long as you would imagine) while gazing back-and-forth between the multi-million dollar condos and town houses, and the beautiful park it fronts.

The garden is not only named in Shakespeare’s honor, but features many of the plants and flowers at his home in Stratfordupon-Avon in England and mentioned in his works. Rosemary, pansies, thistle and even a white mulberry tree can be found here amidst the expansive lawns, ponds and myriad of trails that wind through tunnels and over creeks throughout Central Park.

Though not originally a part of the park (the idea came to light in the 1880s but the garden wasn’t dedicated until 1916, the 300th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s death), it now features pathways, benches and bronze plaques with quotations from the Bard. It is located at West Side and 79th Street near the Delacorte Theatre that hosts an annual “Shakespeare in the Park” series every summer.

Meanwhile, the stroll to the garden was supposed to be contemplative and reflective in

--Shakespeare’s, The Winters Tale It was indeed “middle summer” that had me on this idyllic search for a message I never fail to get from a garden, but it was also one of the hottest days of the year and the concrete and asphalt of the Big Apple soaked in heat like a sponge and released it in waves like an oven.

By the time I reached 60th, the contemplation had turned to gasping as I literally saw the ripples of heat rising off the street like ghostly apparitions. My shirt was soaked and sweat was dripping off my forehead as if I had just dunked it in a bucket of water.

I was on the verge of calling it a day and catching a taxi back downtown when I recalled one of my favorite Shakespeare quotes: “One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.”

And there it was . . . the inspirational

message I was expecting while in the garden but received it while on the way instead.

I slowed my pace, took a breather, and sipped ice water before continuing the trek.

By the time I got to the garden I was in full garden-is-heaven mode, and walked the grounds totally aloof from the heat, and even imagined a breeze sneaking through the oaks and elms to caress my shoulder.

The diversity of the people and plants touring the Shakespeare Garden was both comforting as we all shared a moment with The Bard and his plants and became “kin” for a day.

ith a nod to the late John Denver whose song “Country Roads” spoke of West Virginia as, “almost heaven,” the Finger Lakes Region of New York state is a destination blessed with Eden-like forests and crystalline waters.

In fact, Native legend says the hands of the Great Spirit reached down and scraped the Earth to create eleven lakes located just four hours from New York City, but light years away from the pressures and pace of the huge metropolis.

The Finger Lakes Region sprawls across 9,000 lush, square miles and was once sacred ground where the Iroquois nation of Seneca, Mohawk and other tribes lived, hunted and fished.

Recreation takes place mainly along seven main lakes: Seneca Lake, the largest, deepest and known as the birthplace of the Women’s Rights Movement. The others are Cayuga, Keuka, Canandaigua, Skaneateles, Owasco, and Otisco Lakes.

Spicy Pork Meatballs with Creole Honey Mustard Peppers & Onions (by Chef Jeffory McLean from Barbecue at the Wineries II on the Keuka Lake Wine Trail) ◗ 2 pounds ground pork shoulder ◗ 4 slices white bread, minced in a food processor (about 3 1/2 cups) ◗ 3 eggs ◗ 4 pickled hot cherry peppers, minced ◗ 1/4 cup hot cherry pepper pickling liquid ◗ 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon salt ◗ 2 tablespoons olive oil ◗ 1 cup bell peppers – diced ◗ 1 cup sweet onion – diced ◗ 1 cup Dinosaur BBQ Creole Honey Mustard Sauce

Preheat oven to 450ºF. Put the ground pork, minced bread, eggs, cherry peppers, pepper liquid, and salt in a large bowl. Mix by hand until thoroughly combined. Drizzle the olive oil into a large 9 x 13-inch baking dish, coating the entire surface evenly. Roll the meat mixture into 24 golf ball-sized meatballs, packing the meat firmly.

Arrange the meatballs into even and snug rows in the oiled baking dish. Roast until firm, about 14 minutes. Allow the meatballs to cool for 5 minutes before removing from the dish.

For sauce, sauté peppers and onions is a pan over medium heat.

Once caramelized, add Creole Honey Mustard and heat through.

Pour sauce over meatballs and with a Heron Hill Classic Semi-Dry Riesling or Classic Pinot Noir.

y a w e t a G s ’ a t n a Chef Todd Richards is a Chicago native who has settled comfortably in Atlanta, a city he calls the “gateway to Southern food” because it offers traditional, contemporary, and upscale southern cooking at its best.

Richards credits his family and childhood experiences for his love of food and cooking, and his first encounter with fine dining at a high-end steakhouse in Chicago that served prime rib from a silver-polished carving cart.

It made such a deep impression that he knew immediately what he wanted to do with his life.

“My mother passed away when I was 13,” he said. “My dad cooked, but he worked overnight. We entertained a lot and always had friends over.” Cooking at home, says Richards, provided the foundation for exploring a career as a chef.

Richards has also worked as executive chef in the The Oakroom, a Triple-A, Five Diamond rated restaurant in the Seelbach Hilton Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky.

It was here that he began his mercurial rise among noted American

chefs before moving on to open One Flew South at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, that garnered national honors from Esquire Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler and Bloomberg Business Week.

He also operated a popular barbecue restaurant in downtown Atlanta before joining the city’s highly regarded Ritz-Carlton Buckhead, where several awards and accolades paved the way to getting him a featured slot on NBC’s Today Show.

His latest restaurant, The Shed at Glenwood, is Located in a fast-growing part of Atlanta’s revitalization district, and its menu reflects Richard’s sense of whimsy—a word he often employs to explain imagination and to create daring that’s governed with a respect for great culinary leaders like Charlie Trotter, another

With a professed love of Bourbon, both as a cocktail and ingredient, it’s not surprising that smoking food (even apples) is a major part of Chef Richard’s kitchen.

In fact, it’s as natural for him as having a glass of good wine with friends.

The smoke from Bourbon barrels produces magic, he says, which also leads back to his love of Bourbon.

“Bourbon to me is like Cognac to the French. When a recipe calls for Cognac, I substitute Bourbon.”

His smoked apples received lots of attention recently at The Shed.

“I never thought about brining apples before smoking until around 2010 when I mistakenly put apples in the brine instead of a bourbon marinade,” he recalled. “The result was a fierce flavor explosion of apple, smoke, citrus, wine and herbs.”

Like many of his contemporaries, Todd Richards has favorite ingredients.

“I couldn’t live without thyme, onions, garlic, olive oil, soy sauce and, of course, Kentucky Bourbon,” said Richards. “It’s not just the Bourbon, but the by-products too. I use the barrels for smoking.”

Favorite foods at home? “I love great sausages like Chorizo. Wine is always there. This time of year I really enjoy Pinot Noir.”

Atlanta continues to be home base for the ebullient chef, and with the scheduled opening in early 2014 of his new restaurant The Pig & The Pearl in posh Atlantic Station in the midtown area of the city, all indications are that he’s there for a long stay.

“I learned that we don’t just feed people, we entertain them,” said Richards.

Sherry 1 cup Red Wine 10 ea.

Cardamom Pods 1 tbs.

Cumin Seed 1 tbs.

Chili Powder 1 sprig Thyme In a heavy bottom sauce pot, caramelize onions, carrot and garlic. Once caramelized, add chili powder, thyme, cardamom, cumin seed to the pot. Caramelize the spices without burning. Add the sherry and red wine to the pot and reduce by half. Add the veal stock to the pot and simmer for 20 minutes. Strain the stock

Octopus Hands 6 cups Braising Liquid Bring braising liquid to a boil. Add the octopus and boil for 5 minutes. Bring the liquid to a simmer and braise the octopus for 1 hour. Remove the octopus form the pot and allow to cool.

Using a sharp knife, clean the suckers of the octopus. Reduce the liquid by half to sauce consistency .

To serve, cut the octopus in 3-4 inch pieces. Season with salt and pepper. Heat a sauté pan to medium heat, add olive oil and sear octopus quickly for 3-4 minutes.

Serve with reduce jus.

What You CAN and Cannot Take Through Security

ot sure about what you can and can’t bring through the checkpoint this holiday season?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has provided a list of liquid, aerosol and gel items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home. You can bring pies and cakes through the security checkpoint, but please be advised they are subject to additional screening.

Though seemingly harmless items such as sauces, gift baskets with salsa, jams and jellies are prohibited in carryon luggage. That favorite bottle of wine or liquor? Forget about trying to carrying it aboard the plane.

In addition, perfumes and colognes of more than 3 ounces are strictly prohibited and will

be confiscated at the security checkpoints.

Place all liquids that exceed the three ounce limit in your checked luggage or ship them ahead to your final destination.

Finally, do not wrap gifts you’re taking on the plane as security officers may unwrap gifts if they need to take a closer look. Consider shipping them ahead to save yourself the hassle of placing them through the x-ray screener or more importantly, avoid the risk damage that can result from cramming them into overhead bins on the airplane.

In most countries, items purchased after the security checkpoint have been pre-screened and can be taken on the plane.

Business Travel If you find yourself visiting the same hotel again and again, make it a point to make friends with the hotel staff. They have the power to upgrade you to a larger room or one with an ocean view rather than that dreary one overlooking the parking lot.

Upgrades when Traveling How to Score

While the adage “you get what you pay for� often holds true when you travel, a savvy traveler knows that you can often get more than you pay for from hotels, airlines and rental car agencies. The secret? Upgrades. You can book a seat in coach and get upgraded to business when you fly, get a boost from a compact car to a full size one when you drive, or get a view of the pool instead of the parking lot when you check into a hotel.

While upgrades are not guaranteed, there are ways to improve your chances of getting a coveted seat, car or view at no additional charge. While the only way to guarantee you get the room, car or seat you want is to book it, getting an upgrade is relatively easy and free.

Become a member: If you are a member of an airline’s frequent flyer club, or better yet, their VIP club, you may be more likely to be rewarded with an upgrade from one class to another.

Look the part: It seems silly, but if you are presentably dressed and look as though you belong in first class, you are more likely to score a seat in this coveted section.

Be nice: The person who checks you in is the one who has the option of awarding an upgrade, if one is available. Storming up to the counter, complaining and demanding an upgrade and some great ways to be passed over.

Be flexible: If the airline has overbooked, and you are not in a great hurry, you may be able to secure an upgrade on a replacement flight simply by giving up your seat. Most airlines will get you on the next flight to your destination – and give you a nice voucher as a thank you as well.

If there is something wrong with the room you have been assigned, or you are uncomfortable with the location or condition of the room, say so. But, complain in a nice way.

Book Direct: While you may not have a choice in the matter if your company is booking the room for you, contacting the hotel directly may increase your chances of receiving an upgrade when you arrive. Why? Because hotels need to pay a commission to large clearinghouses like Orbitz, Expedia and Hotels.com if you use one to reserve your room. If the hotel is already receiving 100% of your room rate, they are likely to provide a discount, since they want your repeat business.

Don’t be afraid to ask: Hotels are often underbooked, and simply asking if there is an available upgrade may secure one for you. If you visit the hotel frequently, mention this as well; you may be rewarded with a larger room or better view that would otherwise sit vacant.

Be friendly: Whether you travel for business or fun, if you find yourself visiting the same hotel again and again, make it a point to make friends with the hotel staff. If the front desk staff, concierge or General Manager gets to know and recognize you, you’ll stand a good chance of getting a great room.

One of the biggest advantages to staying in an owner-operated inn is having the knowledge of local sights and attractions, and innkeepers are more than willing to share their knowledge.

Many B&Bs also provide guests with evening snacks or a wine and cheese hour so everyone can mingle.

There is also a guest protocol you will be expected to follow as well.

Though the B&B offers all of the comforts of home, remember you are NOT at home. Keep your television turned down so as not to disturb other guests, and whatever you do, please don’t come down to breakfasts, or for evening drinks in your pajamas!

anny Griffith was on the last leg of a three-event tour of east coast jazz festivals and could hardly believe it when I told him this was my first time at the Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Panama City Beach, Florida.

“This is one of the good ones,” the Los Angeles resident said. “I just wish they had more R&B.” As I moved and bobbed to the music along with thousands of others I wondered, too, how I had missed this Seabreeze Jazz Festival now celebrating its 15th anniversary.

The crowd was mostly southerners from the surrounding states who had come fully prepared with lawn chairs, food, rain gear and even blue tarps to place under their chairs to protect their feet and picnic paraphernalia from the previous night’s rain.

Panama City Beach is made up of 27-miles of white-sugar sand, and a natural cure for what ails you, especially if its from stressful big-city living.

It sits at the convergence of St. Andrews Bay and the Gulf of Mexico along Florida’s panhandle and was once pretty much known only to folks in the region.

Now it’s loved all over for its fishing, golf, off-shore wreck diving, St. Andrew State Park, and other family friendly activities you can enjoy in a laid-back vibe. The locals even gave this little slice of paradise the nickname, “Redneck Riviera.”

The area hosts a year-round mix of spring break travelers, military retirees, and northern snowbirds who enjoy more than 320 days of annual sunshine and an average year-round temperature of 74 degrees.

The sun as well as the crowds were out in full force and ready for a lineup of wonderful jazz that would stretch well into Sunday.

The jazz festival itself started on a Friday night with Foreplay and special guest Lalah athaway who managed to get off only a couple of songs before the rains canceled the rest of the evening’s performances.

There were the usual Smooth Jazz favorites such as Brian Culbertson, Kirk Whalum, and Boney James, but new to me were festival standouts like The Southern Gentlemen and Ladies in Pink.

The Southern Gentlemen consists of a six-piece band that delighted the audience on a clear, Sunday afternoon. The trumpet player wore red patent leather shoes and even sported a red trumpet! The Ladies in Pink brought the crowd to its feet with its music while wearing a range of pink outfits and hats, and several of the women even performed in high heels.

A petite sister in a black mini dress strutted up and down the stage while blowing a saxophone to the cheers of the crowd, and the bass player thumped and walked the strings of the guitar causing the crowd to roar in approval.

The old-school group, Average White Band, stole the show proving they’ve still got it as they whipped up the audience with back-in-the-day hits like “Pick up the Pieces” and “School Boy Crush.”

The 2014 festival is scheduled for April 23-27, and will be held at the Pier Park, a relatively new entertainment complex located near approximately 100 shops, restaurants, and a movie complex.

Dinner at restaurants such as Firefly, located in Bay Point, feature a menu of fresh-caught local fish and perfectly seasoned steaks. First Lady Michelle Obama dined here in 2010, during a visit to spread the message the regions beaches were open and doing well after the BP oil spill that dumped more than 210 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Firefly is elegantly casual with strings of twinkling lights overhead and the food is presented so beautifully I didn’t want to disturb the plate.

With all of the various dining options in Panama City, it was the guilt-ridden breakfasts at Fatty Patty’s Cakes and Café and Andy’s Flour Power that took the phrase southern hospitality to a new level.

Renee Schaarschmidt, owner of Fatty Patty is as well known for her breakfasts of country fried steak and eggs, chicken and waffles, as her work-of-art custom cakes.

John Certo, a New York transplant worked the crowd in the dining room of Andy’s Flour Power like a Big Apple politician. “How was everything?” “What else would you like?” he asked as he moved from table to table.

Andy’s is known for French toast that’s made from its own French bread and served in thick pieces drenched in butter accompanied by slices of Apple hardwood smoked bacon.

Both restaurants are located in nondescript strip shopping centers, but are easily found. Just ask any of the locals for directions.

The food was a metaphor for the entire Panama City experience—sweet, exceptional, and heavily seasoned with love that leaves you clamoring for more.

Exhilarated at completing the river ride without a mishap was what likely led to the courage to climb into the tight, two-person cockpit with Wayne Bezner Kerr, the pilot of the glider plane at the Historic Harris Hill, home of the National Soaring Museum.

My fear of flying and claustrophobia nearly made me scream, “Let me out of this thing!” but the assurances of the 18-year-old licensed pilot who helped strap me in and told me I would love it and wouldn’t regret it made me go through with the flight. The smile from Bezner Kerr, and the revelation he is a father of four temporarily calmed me as well.

“Believe me, PJ, it’s safe. I’ve been a pilot for 25 years,” he said. Our little glider plane was towed down the runway and up in the air by an engine equipped tow plane that disconnected the steel tow cable once we were aloft.

As our little glider circled above the Chemong Valley, Bezner Kerr explained how he was circling to, “catch the air like an Eagle”.

He talked about his family and life in East Africa where they had a second home.

However, I remained terrified and after a few short minutes unashamedly told him, “Ok, I’ve done it. We can go down now.”

The next experience was a scenic flight plane with Joe Costa of the Costa Flying Service, who assured me he had been piloting longer than some of us had been alive. As the four-seat plane soared over Seneca and Keuka Lakes, Costa pointed out various landmarks and said he would take us to Niagara Falls should we return.

But none of those adventures prepared me for the sheer terror I felt as I climbed into the racecar at the Watkins Glen International Racetrack. As the racecar driver sped around the track, deftly maneuvering the series of banks and turns, I felt no thrill, no adrenaline rush. The only thing I could think of was those slow-motioned replays of racecar crashes when drivers fail to make the turns. The rest of the group, however, emerged from their cars laughing.

The Finger Lakes is filled with hard and soft adventures ranging from bicycling, sailing, fishing, hunting, and hot air balloon rides.

As the region gives way to a wintry scenic wonderland, other activities such as snow-shoeing, cross country skiing or snowmobiles take over. There are also slopes suitable for downhill skiing and snowboarding. I’ve been there, done that. But in this case, I certainly will return.

In

the hills overlooking Montego Bay, Jamaica, a jungle of lush greenery and fruit trees including ackee, coconut and breadfruit, kiss the edge of a shallow river in a place of unspoiled beauty called Montego Bay Gardens.

It is also the divide between the conventional Jamaican community of bustling shops and houses and the Rastafari Indigenous Village that is home to a deeply religious Rastafarian community.

The village welcomes tourists as part of an initiative to shed light on the often mis-understood Rastafarian lifestyle and religion that came about as an African centered political movement in the 1930s.

Visitors are often confused about whom and what constitutes a rasta but the village is helping dispel many myths through an interactive, eco-cultural experience that includes Jamaican history, culinary demonstrations and music.

“If you don’t understand the context of the social issues and struggle for identity in Jamaica, you can’t dance to the music of Bob Marley and know what he’s talking about,” explained our guide, Arlene.

“In 1963, one year after Jamaican independence, the Jamaican government called for rastas to be brought in

dead or alive,” she continued. “ Because we smoke, because we revere Haile Selassie, because we want reparation to Africa. We will never ask an island to be a replacement for a continent.”

Before crossing the river, she instructs us to take off our shoes. “When you cross the river, you’re crossing into a different community and way of life,” she explains before guiding us across the river’s clear waters. The stones scattered across the bottom make the crossing a slow and careful process, much like the development of Jamaica’s Rastafarian community.

Rastafarians have suffered harsh discrimination throughout the Caribbean and were routinely abused and arbitrarily arrested until very recently. Their belief that the late Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie is God has not been readily tolerated in this overwhelmingly Christian region.

Rastafarians also view marijuana as a sacred herb they use in religious ceremonies which has resulted in distancing them even further from many of their countrymen.

The tide appears to be shifting however, and acceptance of the Rastfarian lifestyle has spread globally and in Jamaica. Though just a small segment of Jamaica’s population, recent census figures show about a 20 percent increase of Rastafari community members over the last decade.

Despite the increase in numbers, programs that allow visitors into the traditionally insular community which rejects the customs and materialism of Western “Babylon” society are unusual.

“We broke tradition to open up to visitors,” acknowledges Arlene. “Interaction with Babylon is not typical. The tourism is not the end result for us. It’s the funding from the community tourism that is helping us build a museum, cottages and a wellness center.”

With this rare glimpse in mind, Arlene stresses reciprocal interaction; photos of the natural beauty are encouraged but not single photos of community members, and visitors are invited to join members in photos so that it’s not a one-sided experience.

Crossing over the river, we’re given leaves to smell from the aromatic bay rum tree and our faces are painted with red streaks from the annatto spice plant.

We also finger seeds from the castor oil plant, which are supposed to swiftly clean you out internally.

Walking further past banana trees and grazing goats, we reach the entrance of the village, surrounded by a bamboo fence. “Aye, aye, everybody a come,” Arlene announces, alerting the community of our arrival.

Paintings of Jamaican icons, Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey and Nanny, a maroon (a community of escaped enslaved Africans) woman who fought against slavery on the island, line the pathway.

Under a grass awning, Iyansi, covered in a burlap robe, wields a machete, slicing into several jelly coconuts. We’re presented with the cool coconut water in calabash cups, sipping the sweet drink as he explains about Rastafari identity.

Stoking the flames of a small bonfire, he sums up what it means to be Rastafarian. “Rastafari is best described as a man from the past, living in the present, considering the future. It’s about embracing the universe.”

Strolling over to a labyrinth created from bamboo stalks and plants, we are invited to walk through the maze, contemplating world peace. Nearby, a tepee structure called a “wissy hut” is outfitted with hammocks for meditation and relaxation. A demonstration of Rastafarian culinary techniques unfolds in the cooking hut by the village herb master and chef. Native fruits and vegetables cover the counter, forming a brightly colored tapestry.

is killed for food. Eating meat is considered double murder because you’re killing the animal and then you’re killing yourself by eating it. We sample fire-roasted breadfruit in banana leaves as we tour simple wooden buildings being constructed for a museum, recording studio, wellness center and guest cottages. The craft center displays handmade goods from the community, including jewelry made with local crystals, clothing and music CDs. Community members play bass and nyabingi drums and we’re welcomed to remove our shoes and enter the hut to join in. Shaking tambourines, rattling shak shaks and chanting along to the music, we unite with the Rastafarian community spirit.

dusk under a full moon on a balmy December evening

in Lobamba, a quaint community in the Ezulwini Valley in the Kingdom of Swaziland. I am among thousands of barefoot villagers carrying shields and spears in their native dress of animal furs and leopard skins. They have gathered for their most sacred ceremony, called the Incwala, the first fruits festival. Among the throng of people and cows in this outdoor staging area called a kraal, are young and old, teachers, doctors, local businessmen, farmers etc. There is also royalty among us. The central figure is His Majesty The King, King Mswati III. The 44yr old King, who has reigned since 1986, is leading the proceedings flanked by his tribal counsel and security. The King’s family is also taking part in the Incwala, which includes his 14 wives and 24 children. Actually, this historical ritual is best translated as the Kingship Ceremony, which is about cleansing and renewal, and -above all- celebrating kingship. It is a public holiday and every Swazi may take part in the six-day event. Visitors with an interest in Swaziland culture are welcome to take part as well, which is how I came to be here, albeit not barefoot in the cow dung and not in a leopard skin.

Swazi Cultural Village

Not to be mislead, if you travel to Swaziland, you’ll find the people are far from the way they are portrayed at the Incwala ceremony. They are a poor people but learned and cultured. Swazis mostly reside in small township communities and farms not unlike the ones sprawled out across rural America. Those who can afford them, drive small foreign cars and carry cell phones. They dress in standard western clothing and yes, many of them can be found on facebook.

That’s actually part of the mystique of Swaziland. It is a cultural icon steeped in history and tradition. This small mountainous country in Southern Africa between Mozambique and South Africa, stretches about 81 miles from east to west and has remained virtually unchanged by outside British and German political influence. This was not easy and had it not been for the strong, steady and politically astute Kingship of Mswati III’s father King Sobhuza II, things might have been dramatically different.

King Sobhuza, who reigned for over 60 years until his death in 1982, was the mastermind behind

It is a feat he was able to accomplish without war or hardship. Today King Sobhuza II is widely hailed as the “King who had no enemies”…a man who peacefully modified a tribal government into a constitutional monarchy and later was installed as absolute ruler. His legacy is quite expansive. During the course of his long and successful reign, he is said to have married 70 wives and sired 210 children. Nearly one hundred are still alive today as well as more than 1000 grandchildren. This obviously begs the question that with so many offspring, who becomes heir to the throne? The Swazi tradition is that no King can pick his successor. The responsibility of choosing a royal successor rests with an independent special council, which is called the “Liqoqo. Essentially it works like this: The Liqoqo designates one of the King’s wives as the “Great Wife”. The son of the “Great Wife” will become the next King providing that he is an only child without siblings and that the mother is of good character. Just two more points about the King and his

many wives…first, the traditional Swazi culture dictates that the King is expected to marry a woman from each clan thereby uniting relationships with each region in the country. Secondly, with so many women married to one man, one would ask, do they all get along? Insiders say “at least in public they put up a good front, but behind the scenes there is obviously some degree of jealously”.

The Kingdom of Swaziland, which by the way is it’s official name, is a scenic country of rolling hillsides, mountains and lush green valley landscapes. Officials have long since discovered its marketability and appeal to tourists but they admit to being hindered in their marketing campaigns by the pandemic of HIV/Aids, which is the highest in the world. The country has undertaken aggressive advocacy campaigns coupled with clinical and non-clinical interventions to address the problem. But while they stress great strides for improvement have been made, they also admit they still have much more to do.

During my three days in-country I found the outreach

and hospitality to be on a very high level. The people were quite friendly and receptive and the accomodations at the hotels and resorts were comfortable and clean.

This is the first trip here for Carolyn Anderson, owner of Beyond All Borders a global special events, luxury travel and expositions company, “ I’ve been impressed with the organization and hospitality of the local tourism officials” she told me. Anderson went on to say “this is a unique destination that I am sure African-American clients will thoroughly enjoy”.

For me, another attraction to Swaziland is that it’s an affordable destination where the American dollar is very strong compared to the Swazi rand currency. The daily excursions are cultural and entertaining. There are casinos and several safari lodges teaming with big game, so be sure to bring your camera.

Bring your appetite as well, the cuisine is ethnic and tasty, you’ll find local game like antelope and warthog on the menus, but just remember it’s only venison and pork. Also try the ostrich or crocodile. It tastes like chicken.

Located in the municipality of Zihautanejo, the beach resort has restaurants, bars, shopping, entertainment.

Some say the name Zihuatanejo comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word Cihuatlan that means “place of women.”

Located in the state of Guerrero, named after the country’s first Black Indian president, Vicente Guerrero, who extended the 1824 Mexican Constitution abolishing slavery to include the part of Mexico dominated

by Texans in 1829. (This set into play a number of events that literally led to the war between Mexico and the U.S.) Today, Zihuatanejo, widely known as the Mexican Riveriera is the third most visited area in Mexico after Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.

LA Casa Que Canta is a lovely hotel that fits neatly into a hillside.

It features a stunning bay, beautiful beaches, fine restaurants, great food and a developing architectural style known as Zihua Style pioneered by noted architect Enrique Zozaya. Yet, with all that sophistication, it retains the warmth, hospitality, and civility of a sleepy fishing village.

In the 1970s, the city became Ixtapa-Zihautanejo after the government turned a coconut plantation and mangrove estuary into a man-made resort and tourist destination known as Ixtapa.

Located in the municipality of Zihautanejo, the beach resort has restaurants, bars, shopping, entertainment, a modern bike trail that runs right through lush gardens, and large chain hotels that front the beaches. It also boasts the Marina and Yacht Club that hosts a great restaurant called El Galeon that serves some of the largest, freshest, most luscious shrimp I’ve ever eaten.

There’s a lot of good food in Zihuatenajo and great pride in its preparation. Seafood is abundant — red snapper, tuna, marlin and shrimp.

The traditional dish of Pozole, a Mexican soup usually made with pork, red chiles, and hominy also caught my attention. Because it takes hours to prepare, it’s only served on Thursdays and special occasions throughout the country because most people work in the tourism industry which means no weekends off— so Thursdays have been set aside for Pozole with the family.

Arriving on a Thursday, I had a seafood Pozole of wild shrimp, baby calamari and clams simmering in a

richly flavored tomato base served at my hotel, La Casa Que Canta, where I also had my first fried grasshoppers served with Moscata.

La Casa Que Canta is a lovely hotel that fits neatly into a hillside.

Typical of Zihua style, it has multi-tiered levels, arches, terraces, and is constructed of local all-natural materials that reflect the environment – tropical woods, adobe stone, palapas and tule for the roofs.

Great attention is paid to details like the beautifully carved doors and grand entryways. Service is fast, friendly and excellent. Dramatic views are in every direction, particularly from my terrace on the top floor where I spent afternoons in my private pool looking out over the bay while blackbirds took sips from the water. The average temperature is an ideal 75-to-82 degrees unless you happen to visit during that brief period before the rainy season in June. Unfortunately, that’s when I was there, and the humidity was so high you’re constantly drenched in sweat.

Fortunately, everywhere you go there’s a tray of deliciously cold towels to press against your flesh along

with an icy bottle of water, or a refreshing glass of Hibiscus tea.

One of the most interesting excursions is an archeological excavation site in La Soledad De Maciel (La Chole), a small village about a 25-minute drive from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. Orientation to the site begins in the La Chole Museum, a small, modern facility.

Rodolfo Lobato, the chief archeologist, explained through an interpreter the significance of the artifacts and relics housed under glass and how they reveal the customs and rituals of the people dating back to 1500 BC. A visit to an adjacent room reveals relics that are laid bare and open to inspection. The tour concludes with a visit to the site where ancient ruins linked to many cultures, including the Aztec, Toltec and Olmec, have been uncovered. This includes skulls, an entire ballgame field, and a reconstructed pyramid.

Zihuatanajo is a great vacation spot for anyone, but especially for sports fishermen and people who love water sports.

The next time I go, however, I’m simply going to stroll the streets of Zihua, lunch in the little cafes, find enchanting little things in the shops and sit outside to people watch as the very friendly residents of Zihuatanajo go about their daily lives.

Have a neighbor who lives next door or directly across the street keep an eye on your house.

Protecting Your House While You Are on Vacation Going away to relax provides some needed relief from the daily stresses of work and routine, but that relief can instantly disappear upon your return home to find your castle has been burglarized.

The following are a few tips to help protect your home and make it less inviting to burglars: • Ensure all doors and windows are secure. Take a moment before leaving to ensure all doors and windows are closed and locked. Many burglars look for targets that provide easy access. If your house is equipped with an alarm, remember to set it before you leave.

• Ask a neighbor to be your lookout. Ideally, it should be a neighbor next door or directly across the street. Tell the neighbor if you are expecting anyone to stop by the house while you are out of town, and authorize them to call police if a person you did not mention shows up at the door.

• Use light timers. You can buy light timers at hardware stores and big box discount stores. The protection these relatively inexpensive devices provide is immense. By setting light timers, you can make it look like someone is inside the house at night. Try to mimic how you turn your lights on

and off, making it appear the same as when you are home. For additional security, install timers on your television or stereo so noise comes from inside at different times.

• Put a temporary hold your mail, newspaper and other regular deliveries. Nothing tells criminals you are out of town like a pile of newspapers in the driveway, an accumulation of days of envelopes in your mailbox, or delivered packages sitting on the doorstep for days on end. Ask the neighbor watching the house to place any delivered packages in their home.

• Keep the lawn trimmed. Grass not trimmed for a considerable time is a clear indication that a house is empty. Hire a service to keep the lawn neatly manicured.

• Leave a car in the driveway. Having a car sitting in the driveway makes criminals think the house is occupied. If you don’t have a second car to leave in the driveway, invite your neighbor to park a car there while you are away.

By taking these simple precautions, you can greatly decrease your exposure.

By 1870, the cost of sending a Christmas card had dropped to just half a penny, enabling even more people to send greetings to friends and families. By the early 1900s, the practice had spread to European countries, including Germany where the post card was especially popular.

These early cards were often elaborate, with different panels that folded out to create a picture, or were shaped like birds, candles or bells. Although seasonal themes such as snow, robins and Christmas gifts were popular, many of these early cards also depicted spring scenes, as a reminder to the recipient that warmer weather would soon be here.

Christmas cards became popular with the wealthy in the United States in the early 1840’s; it was not until the 1870s that mass production meant that anybody could afford to send a card.

In 1915, John Hall founded a card company along with his brothers and the name they chose is still well known almost a century later – Hallmark Cards.

The first Presidential Christmas cards are believed to have been sent out by President Herbert Hoover during the 1930’s, although some historians say that President Calvin Coolidge was issuing seasonal greetings during the 1920’s.

Hallmark has designed and issued over 30 different White House Christmas cards since the first “official” ones sent by President

Dwight Eisenhower in 1953.

Older Christmas cards have become extremely collectible, as much for their value as their attractive design. An early card by Henry Cole was sold at auction for almost $36,000.

Some Presidential cards are also valuable and highly sought after by collectors, including the cards signed by President John F. Kennedy before his untimely death in November 1963.

England’s Queen Mary was an enthusiastic collector of Christmas cards and her collection is now on display in the British Museum in London.

Of course, if you are sending cards, you need stamps as well, and most countries now issue Christmas stamps that have also become highly collectible. The first Christmas stamps were issued by Austria in 1937, and by the

The average person in the United States sends out about 28 cards every Christmas, and an estimated 1.9 billion cards are mailed in the U.S. alone, making it the biggest card giving occasion.

the newly formed post office. Along with an artist named John Horsley, Cole designed and printed a card and sold it for the then pricey sum of a shilling.

The card depicted a large Christmas meal, with what appeared to be a child drinking a glass of wine. As the post office became more efficient, the price of postage decreased and more and more ordinary people were able to buy and mail cards during the holidays.
