4 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

Christopher Nicholls Master

We stand for our values – kindness, courage, integrity, responsibility and respect. Easy to say: every organisation has values these days. We have to be able to actually be kind, first of all, rather than just trotting out ‘kindness’ as if it were a sticker in our Line account. But, more than that, we should explore what it means to be courageously kind, or to be responsibly courageous, or to have respectful And,integrity.every

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was an online year, it was a face-to-face year; it was a year of distance, it was a year of closeness; it was a year of learning, it was a year of forgetting; it was a time of openings, it was a time of closings; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of difficulty; we were masked, we were free to speak: it was 2021-22, with all its messy, magnificent, extraordinary, kind, mean-spirited, dynamic, frustrating imperfection.

I do like the Bangkok Wellingtonian. No-one can possibly tell the full story of the past one hundred and eighty-five days –it is too complex, too multi-layered. But these pages give you a glimpse into the way we have lived our lives this year. I hope you and I will both be able to look at this book in yet-unimagined future times and really feel something of what the school was, and who the people were.

A school is the people in it – that’s a truism. It’s more than that, because people are more than that when they are together, when they inhabit an environment together, when they combine to achieve things together, and when they come to stand for something together.

MESSAGE FROM THE MASTER

A YEAR TO REMEMBER, A YEAR TO FORGET

Every face you see in this book – smiling, concentrating, masked, surprised, delighted, frowning (surely not?) – is the face of an individual Wellingtonian. With their own experience of the year. And when we look at the pictures, or read the words, the ‘hole in the paper’, as Stephen King calls it, will open up. The whole world lies behind these pages. I hope it’s a good world for you: it has been a great one for us!

year, we have to learn these things afresh, and perhaps differently, as new students, parents and staff come in.

Next onto the beautifully set stage was Seth from Reception who played Mary Had A Little Lamb on the trumpet – followed by Preme in Year 1 who played A River Flows In You on the piano.

Captain lifted the trophy.

A fabulous performance followed by one of the Senior Bands – Trip, Trey, Skye and Josiah.

Students then raced back to their classrooms, stopping to greet some of our parents gathered in the Theatre Plaza. It was then time for some final photographs against our special backdrop and a delicious ice cream for everyone –in Wellington colours, of course.

Year 2 took to the stage to showcase their Respect Dance which had everyone cheering and clapping along and then Sinead Corrigan, Head of Music, awarded her Music prizes. She stressed, “I am proud of each and every one of you. These prizes are for contribution. They are awarded to those who inspire others.”

She mentioned highlights of a year which included:

A VERY SPECIAL END OF TERM

• 100 Days of School – Reception

• Trash to Treasure – Year 1

Sport took its turn next with Director of Sport, Jon Fudge, presenting his Farewell Awards across the whole school. He acknowledged that the important thing is to have a great attitude and to be a good competitor across an array of Jamesdisciplines.Panton,

Head of Senior School, introduced Music Scholar, Matt (Year 9) who played Fix You on the guitar. This led Dr Panton into his address on how far the Senior School has come this year. “We have built a fantastic Senior School this year. We look back to the first glimpse of the school – still unfinished as we started the year. And now we are settled and about to start our first IGCSE courses. So much has gone on this year. I am very proud of each and every one of my colleagues – and every one of our students. A remarkable amount of learning and deep thinking has taken place.”

Nicholas Jeffs in Marketing had prepared a wonderful video collage of just a few of the thousands of photographs taken across the year and we all sang and clapped along to Celebration! After the Master’s final goodbyes and thanks, the Staff Band took to the stage – thank you Conor McKee, Jamie Scammells, Mr El, Mr Chris and special guests Chris Jenkins and Rose McKee who dueted on Shallow.

performance of For The Love of a Princess by our Music Scholars Suri (Year 7), Ete (Year 7) and Neya (Year 9) Master, Chris Nicholls, set the scene in his opening address. He told the assembled students “To be as good as the Music Scholars you need to practise. It’s not magic. If you keep going you will get better and better.” Great advice for life for all of us.

A great end to a long term and a challenging year. What will 2022-23 bring us? What will we be writing this time next year? We can’t wait to find out.

July 8 was a very special day in the 2021-2022 academic year. It marked the end of another unusual year. Despite all the additional challenges, we were determined to celebrate in the best possible way. Rather than a traditional Speech Day, we decided upon a Whole School Celebration Assembly. For the first time in several years (and possibly the last time as we have now outgrown the theatre), every WCIB student, teacher and member of staff was present in our beautiful theatre for the final morning of term.

Even the tiniest of our students joined in, with the three Pre-Nursery classes looking around in wonder as everyone chattered and laughed in anticipation of the joys to come. Students were in full School uniform – its last outing before a summer in free dress. The air was filled with a sense of excitement. A sense of a year well spent, of learning and play, fun and development. A sense that we were back to a new

Jeffs

I reflect on this year with many different emotions –happiness in seeing the development and growth of our School and community, amazement in the resilience and perseverance demonstrated by families and staff throughout the pandemic, and excitement as I consider what we have managed to achieve (despite these challenges), and what we will continue to achieve into the future.

Looking back over the past year, we remember many incredibly exciting events – Discover China and India Weeks, our first FOBISIA Maths competition, Book Week, a huge range of sporting competitions, House competitions, class assemblies – the list goes on! One of my personal highlights was seeing our Year 3 to 6 students performing their Bollywood Dance routine and feeling their delight when they understood the impact their performance had had on the audience. Furthermore, this year’s production of The Green Dream was a stunning example of our talents, as well as the power of collaboration as students worked with each other to produce a spectacular show.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLHannah

So many memories, all created by the dedicated learning attitudes of our children, the commitment of our wonderful teachers and the support from our families. I would personally like to thank you for all that you do, and I cannot wait to see what the adventures of next year will bring.

10 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

One of the greatest joys of my job is taking time to observe the personal growth of each of our students, seeing the positive impact of the wealth of opportunities they have been given in the classroom and beyond. Through questioning, exploring, researching, and creating, our children have become more articulate, confident, and mature individuals who show continuous interest in finding out more about their world. Increasingly it has been wonderful being able to share these varied experiences with parents – I cannot wait for many more such opportunities very soon!

We have had another highly successful year in the Junior School, with our students making excellent progress and showing unwavering positivity and enthusiasm, regardless of what challenges they have faced. Our students continue to be diligent and committed learners, every day that they come to School.

Head of Junior School

It is difficult to do justice to just how much has taken place, and how much has been built in the Senior School this year. But this is still only the beginning. I am looking forward to working with students and colleagues as we continue in our task of finding the best in ourselves, and being the best that we can be, in the coming year.

Of course, a school is also a lot more than its facilities. Pastoral care is the sine qua non of an outstanding school, and at Wellington we take our pastoral care system very seriously. Over the course of this year, Lead Tutors have worked hard to develop the Senior House system: the four founding Junior School Houses have given birth to eight Senior Houses: Hopetoun, Orange, Lynedoch, Picton, Hill, Murray, Anglesey and Talbot. Senior School Houses are the spaces in which a group of students and a tutor meet every day to work together on common projects, to support progress and solve problems.

This year we also introduced a new system for tracking and assessing student progress across the year. Combined with a newly streamlined reporting system, parents’ evenings, and regular one-to-one feedback from teachers and tutors, this has enabled students to take greater independent control of their own intellectual development. This greater autonomy is hugely important, not least for Year 9 students who, through the course of the year, have worked through the Options and Careers Programme to choose their IGCSE Options which begin in earnest in Year 10.

Senior students have also taken part in a mentoring scheme with Year 12 students at The Wellington College (UK), and they have been introduced to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, completing their first hike and overnight camp with great success. As we have seen the reintroduction of sports fixtures in the latter part of the year, our Sports Scholars have also seen tremendous success in the pool and on the golf course, while Music Scholars have picked up a string of awards and exam results, and Academic Scholars came home from the World Scholars Cup with medals aplenty.

After the return of students to campus early in the year, our first exciting challenge was moving into the newly completed Senior School building. It is in the classrooms and reading rooms, the art studio and performance areas, science labs and social spaces that teachers and students come together every day to make and grow our Wellington community. It was wonderful to welcome Senior School Parents for a special Private Viewing of the new building back in November. As the year has progressed, students and staff have really begun to make the different learning spaces and social places their own.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

As the year progressed and Covid restrictions lessened, we had the opportunity for more inter-House events and competitions: from House Poetry through the Bridge Building Challenge, to Football, Basketball, and Swimming. The joy of House events is the way that students from different year groups work together to celebrate each other’s skills and achievements. This was nowhere more evident than in the outstanding House Music competition in which all students took to the stage to sing or play instruments in front of the whole school!

LAUNCH OF OUR NEW SENIOR SCHOOL BUILDING

Our Master and Bursar are working with the designers on phasing of the next building. We are truly lucky to have a School which grows upwards and outwards as its student numbers grow.

12 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

Our parents love it, too. Khun Cindy, a Year 7 parent says“It is truly an incredible space for learning, exchange of ideas, and most importantly community. Every detail is deliberate and thoughtfully considered. We especially appreciate the light and flow of the circular interior and how the library seamlessly blends into walkways and walls... the senior students are one lucky bunch of kids!”

This year at Wellington College Bangkok has been extremely exciting. We started the year with our Senior School students still in the Junior School building – and we ended the year with more Senior School students than ever in a brand-new home. Our state-of-the-art Senior School building takes pride of place adjacent to the Theatre and with its own Front Desk and entrance. Built in beautiful red brick to match and reflect the design of the rest of the School – inside it is light, spacious, modern with a beautiful central atrium and cylindrical library. This phase has been very carefully designed to capture the ‘tone’ of our school – it’s exciting, inspiring, thought-provoking, innovative, and truly exceptional. A unique learning environment in Bangkok – it is proving to be a fitting home for our growing student populations and a source of awe for all our visitors.

Our first three floors are filled with well-appointed, adaptable, and innovatively designed classrooms with extra spaces allowing for a variety of teaching and learning. Specific rooms for Harkness teaching are designed into the fabric of the building so that Harkness methodology is appropriately planned and specific.

There is more to come as we develop further the initial six-storey building to become two buildings – each filled with reading, learning and discussion spaces. Whether students are in class, relaxing with friends just chatting, or racing outside to the green lawns and sports areas this is a School building which has everything!

The building was officially opened in November 2021 as our owners, the Master and the Senior School team welcomed parents to tour and to soak up the atmosphere that their children would be enjoying for years to come. Everyone agrees this is a building which is sure to be the source of much academic success. Many friendships will flourish here and there will always be the perfect space for every memory in the making.

LAUNCH OF OUR NEW BUILDING 13THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

GBAC has always provided us with competition in Basketball, Football and Swimming, and we again came back with trophies at in multiple age groups in these sports. But we were able to introduce some new competition and sports this year. Three years ago, we were invited to be a founding school in the Bangkok Games, competing with Harrow, Patana, Shrewsbury, STA, Denla and Bangkok Prep. Finally, this event happened this year, with us hosting an excellent Athletics event. This week of U11 sport will be replicated in 2023.

After over two years of Covid restrictions we were overjoyed to see the return of sport in its various forms at Wellington College Bangkok. We were intentionally cautious with a phased return to competition, beginning with the returnof in-person sport in school. This took the form of PE lessons and sports with minimal contact and culminated with an incredibly busy Summer Term, where somehow, we have managed to fit in over forty fixtures and tournaments in various sports. We have enjoyed incredible individual and team success this year, but it seems more appropriate to celebrate the fact that we have been able to get participation going.

14 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

SPORT AT WELLINGTON COLLEGE BANGKOK

We have competed at U11, U13 and U15 levels this year in Basketball, Football, Athletics, Touch Rugby and Netball, with whole School success in Golf and Swimming. We look forward to the return of U9 sport in the next academic year with a full schedule already in the calendar for all age groups. For team sports, our principal source of competition is GBAC, an ever-growing group of premium international schools that offer league fixtures and tournaments in the main sports played in Bangkok. This took the form of tournaments in the Summer Term, in which we enjoyed great success, putting out both boys’ and girls’ teams in all age groups.

• We have introduced a group of very strong and passionate Sports Scholars

Most will be aware this will be my last entry as Director of Sport at Wellington. I am incredibly proud of the department and what has been achieved in our first four•years. We are competitive with the best schools in Bangkok,

• We are ready for the FOBISIA Games where we will compete with the best British schools in Asia

SPORTS

Jon Fudge, Director of Sports (2018-2022)

• We have established our five core sports and their amazing leaders

Competing with more established schools and beating them, has led to fixture requests for next year. Furthermore, it allowed us the opportunity to develop and grow new sports. Most noticeably, Touch Rugby and Netball were incredibly well received by our students, and we look forward to seeing the growth of these sports in years to come.

15THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

I leave with fond memories and a pride in the participation levels we have achieved at Wellington College Bangkok.

Miss Carzana used the impetus of the Netball at U11 to grow the sport across the whole College, with Netball fixtures for the first time in the Senior School also a feature. Likewise, Cricket has seen a growth in interest and participation with good numbers engaging in the sport and taking the opportunity to compete. Golf has become a real strength, not only with the success of our best players but the pathway that has been created for beginners through to our players playing on the international stage.

In the four years that we have been operating as a PE department, the House matches have always been a highlight. Whilst we missed the enthusiastic parental support that had been a feature in previous years, it was incredibly pleasing to see the return of these events. We had an adapted whole School Sports Day, along with Football, Basketball, Swimming, Multisports and Dodgeball at various age groups. Parents – we can’t wait to see you back!

16 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022 SPORTS

SPORTS 17THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

It felt so good to be out there again. It’s been an amazing year with lots of highs (and a few lows – we’re only human). Bring on 2022-2023! Now a TSA certified team the Wellington Swim Team will be bigger and better next year!

18 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

“It feels good to race again”

Then came the race of the year for our Swim Scholars on 5 –10 April, at ABAC University – host to the Thailand National Age Group Championships. Our Year 9 Scholar Baikao, with seven events over five days had the meet of her life picking up four bronzes, one silver and one gold and became national champion in the 200m Butterfly. Skye and Kim made National finals and Orca finished 13th in his highest ever finish. A proud week for all of us.

IN THE POOL

James Goddard – Head of Swimming

What a great year it’s been for the Wellington Swim Team. Training began back in September with the creation of three new squads - Cubs Squad, Cubs Development Squad and Lions Performance Squad. With hard training in the mornings and in the afternoons our first competition came for our Seniors at the Patana Sports Resort where they picked up a haul of medals and achie d some fast swimming! We then moved to March where some of Seniors competed at the Regional Thaioil Swimming Meet to try and qualify for National Championships. Skye became regional champion for the first time and great swims also for Orca saw both boys qualify for the National Championships.

One month later our Juniors took centre stage at the Puppy Cup. Medals were secured by Nate, Porsche, Grace, Peach, Toddy and Mai – and many of our team made personal bests.

“I can’t believe I swam that fast”

“I am so inspired – I want to train harder now”.

A YEAR IN THE POOL

“When can I race again!!”

It was amazing to compete again after almost two years of deprivation. Two years of built-up energy released off the blocks and into the swimming pool. Our Swimmers summed it up –

There are certainly some swim stars in the making! Later in the year, Wellington hosted the GBAC Swimming Competition for 2022 which saw six schools compete for the GBAC Trophy. Our swimmers were not intimidated by any other school with bigger teams – they put on a show that almost set our on pool on fire! After an intense final race –right to the wire – Wellington College Bangkok were crowned the GBAC CHAMPIONS.

I’m extremely proud to say we finished as the Number 1 international school in the Bangkok Metropolitan area this year. All students within the golf team and development classes have improved significantly since September 2021 and I’m so proud of all their hard work and dedication. Since I joined Wellington, we have seen such growth, we have expanded from just five golfers in the team! Now we are eighteen in the team, twenty five in development classes and eighteen in golf snag for beginners.

What a year it’s been for golf here at Wellington Bangkok! We have all grown so much, learned so much and come together as a team and group of individuals who love golf!

It’s impossible for me to single out any individual achievement this year because every single child has had a wonderful year with many achievements and successes.

Michael Antona – Head of Golf

Lastly to all our parents in the golf community here at Wellington thank you for your tireless commitment. Early starts and long days spent at the golf course can be tiring – but find comfort in knowing your children are all making progress and they have the potential to achieve their dreams within golf if they continue to work hard, practise and be the best that they can be.

IN THE SWING

One of my personal highlights of this year was being able to bring Wellington College Bangkok as the host school to the prestigious Amata Spring Country Club. This has never been allowed in the past and was a real treat for all students being allowed to play at such an exclusive venue providing a real test of their games.

I can’t wait to see what next year brings for all our golfers of all ages and stages. Whatever happens – we are here for each other.

IN THE SWING

19THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

More importantly we are creating a team environment. Golf is an individual sport (and a lonely sport at times when you aren’t playing at your best.) Yes, individual success is important but what truly makes a team is having a teammate there to pick you up and support you when things aren’t going your way on or off the golf course. This kind of value will stand any and all of our golfers in good stead for US colleges and further in life. We Win, Lose and Grow as a team!

20 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022 SPORTS DAY

This year it has been difficult to do everything, but competition has (of course) been as fierce as ever. Houses have competed in the Recycling Challenge and in all kinds of sports and games. Take a look at some of the pictures here and remember all the fun. It was a close-run thing, but Wellesley emerged House Competition winners!

• Third Place – Apsley

Are you a Blue Benson, a Green Wellesley, an Orange Stanley or a Purple Apsley? Whichever it is – you wear it with pride! We don’t have enough space to share every event and triumph, but can you spot your favourite activity?

Each child is allocated a House when they join us, and they will remain in that House for their time here. Houses can collect points for doing well in competitions and in School life. Look at the tokens as they pile up outside the Junior School Library.

JUNIOR HOUSES

• Second Place – Benson

• Fourth Place – Stanley

• First Place – Wellesley

Well done everyone. We can’t wait to see what happens next year!

21THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

Houses are VERY important in Junior School. All our students are in a class with a class teacher, but they are also part of something even greater. The four Houses form a centrepiece for much of our competitive activity! Did you know… Our Houses are named after Wellington UK Houses – they are important connections to the Duke of Wellington. Which House are you?!

The Houses indulge in lots of activities across the course of the year – and this year, within their safe bubbles for much of the time, Houses were as competitive as always. House Football, House Activities Day, House Basketball, House Poetry, House Music, House Swimming (where Wellesley emerged victorious causing Mr Findlay to leap fully clothed into the pool!) were just some of the Thechallenges.termended with House Move Up Day where students came together in the last week along with some of our new Senior School students from Year 6 plus some of our new joiners. Next year is going to be even more exciting as Tutor groups divide and grow as our school gets bigger!

Houses develop as our students move into Senior School. They become the focus of our pastoral system and each student joins a House Tutor Group on the day they enter Wellington College Bangkok, and they stay within that House as they move up the School.

36 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022 LIBRARY

A YEAR OF JUNIOR SCHOOL READING

At the start of this year, we introduced our new classes, all named after authors! From famous picture book authors such as Julia Donaldson and Jill Murphy represented in Year 1, to award-winning British writers Philip Pullman and Elizabeth Laird in Year 6. Every class had the opportunity to discover their own class author’s books and learning studios were decorated amazingly with the authors’ characters.

Using these texts, students have been honing their reading comprehension. Teachers and ALTs have been working with students to predict, clarify, question, infer, summarise and evaluate throughout reading their class texts. Students have also been making connections using their knowledge from theme lessons and other stories, deepening their learning. With these skills, students are well equipped to pick up any book and read for pleasure, understand the narrative, and make the story come to life in their own head!

Supporting reading for pleasure is the top priority of our library. Our students checked out over 16,000 books during this school year, with a staggering average of 1720 books checked out each month! Our most checked-out texts this year have been Dinosaur in Danger by Paul Geraghty (who visited WCIB in 2020), Guts by the popular graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier and, of course, the ever-favourite Dog Man and Cat Kid by Dav Pilkey.

Alongside our class authors’ texts, students delved into fantastic class reads. Year 1 got Lost in the Toy Museum which provided a great fictional link to their curriculum theme lessons. Year 2 jumped into the world of Roald Dahl with George’s Marvelous Medicine – every Roald Dahl book in the library has been checked out by Year 2s ever since! Year 3 went on magical journeys through the fictional lands of Narnia (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe), Nanvi Dar (The Abominables) and Kokiro (Kiki’s Delivery Service). This magical theme was continued into Year 4 with students discovering the Harry Potter book series for the first time. Year 5 uncovered the meaning of friendship and the power of children in both The Bridge Home and The Explorer This sentiment was continued in Year 6 when they were transported to children living in Addis Ababa in The Garbage King

37THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

Covid did not stop our students connecting with book creators over the world. Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 participated in their very own masterclass with illustrator Korky Paul. Korky helped our students bring to the his famous characters, Winnie and Wilbur. Our Year 3-6 students participated in an author study session with Lauren St John who provided our students with an insight about becoming an author, her life and what inspires her to write. Parents also joined in with the spirit of Book Week, participating in our week-long Book Fair.

BOOK WEEK IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

Of course, no Book Week would be complete without character dress-up day! Our students became a host of book characters from Gangsta Granny to Stickman and Little Red Riding Hood to the Gingerbread Man. Our teachers also gave our students a run for their money, with costumes from Fantastic Mr Fox, Aliens Love Underpants and The Hungry Caterpillar, to name a few! It was truly wonderful to see students had thought about their favourite stories and characters and they really inhabited their personalities.

There’s no better example of Wellington students’ love for reading than Book Week! In Junior School, students' learning focused on three texts throughout the week. Early Years focused on Beegu by Alexis Deacon, which provided for some great learning involving space and friendships. Years 1, 2 and 3 focused on If You Come To Earth by Sophie Blackall. Students wrote letters to aliens and explored their love of the planet using this beautiful picture book. Years 4, 5 and 6 focused on the high-interest picture book Thao by Thao Lam. Using the book as inspiration, Ethey became authors themselves, creating their own picture book around the themes of diversity and inclusion to read aloud to their fellow KS1 students.

?

• Did you know... the top book to be borrowed from the Senior School library this year is....

Once upon a time at a school called WCIB English was the subject favoured by many. The students read books, poems and plays, Uttered thoughts and opinions which never failed to amaze, Learned grammar, spellings and punctuation And generally had a great deal of fun!

Creativity, passion, enquiry and reflection Are just some of the skills they honed to perfection. They’ve worked hard all year and are in need of a rest, But it’s totally worth it as English is the best!

A YEAR OF SENIOR SCHOOL READING

• Did you know... the House with the most library borrowing this year is Orange?

LIBRARY

Book Week 2022 also featured Storytime in the Theatre with different teachers each day reading aloud to an audience of select students, Drop Everything and Read whereby we all stopped what we were doing and read silently when the tannoy sounded, and Drop-in Readers who interrupted lessons to read aloud to students. It was an exciting, creative and jam-packed week full of literary fun!

BOOK WEEK IN THE SENIOR SCHOOL

On the first day of Book Week the students were treated to a virtual visit from the famous novelist Ross Welford. Author of Time Travelling with a Hamster and, ‘The 1000 year old Boy’, he delighted our students with magic tricks, a discussion on sources of inspiration, and an insight into how he writes.

In their English lessons that week students worked in pairs or individually to come up with a new concept for a novel. They had to write a blurb, come up with a plot summary, design the front cover, and then present a pitch arguing why their novel should be published.

In Houses, students worked together that week to recreate a book cover which was displayed on the Dining Hall windows, and pitted against the other houses in a competition judged by Mr Scammells. The covers were beautifully creative and presented and included a range of novels from Jurassic Park to The Little Prince to The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

The Book Week assembly was a fantastic production of ‘The Night Before Book Week’, which starred WCIB’s very own

young Findlay, a boy who was stranded in the school library and came face to face with a number of characters who had escaped from various novels. The assembly also featured the smash hit ‘I Love my Library’, sung beautifully by Year 7.

LIBRARY

2022 saw the first official Book Week in the Senior School! In order to mark this special event, and to harmonize with our beautiful Senior School building, we decided upon the theme of ‘Our Library’ for the week.

The final day of Book Week involved the dress up parade. It was so lovely to see all the students dress up as characters from novels and parade around the Atrium, accompanied by Mr McKee’s witty compèring! The afternoon concluded with a house quiz (Book Week themed of course!) in which the students were tested on their knowledge of a variety of categories in famous novels.

Educationalist Sir Ken Robinson wrote that “Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status." The rich diversity of our curriculum is designed to ensure students can express ideas across a broad field of art making processes. At KS2 level, our priority is to nurture students’ creativity and develop their imagination, by allowing them to solve creative problems through a broad range of technical skills, as they learn about artists, ask questions and think about Art and their world in new ways. The Art curriculum is designed to create links with other subjects, because students learn best when they can make connections between subjects and understand how these relate to everyday life.

A unit on ‘The Ocean’ led Year 5 students to respond to Hokusai’s famous ‘Great Wave off Kanagawa’ through digital and traditional drawings, polystyrene prints and experimental mixed media work.

The role of Asia in WW2 and, in particular, the Kanchanaburi Bridge was the starting point for Year 6 students , who learnt about one point perspective as they developed a sophisticated set of lino prints and drawings.

Our commitment to continue to strengthen the creative capacities of our students is paired with an underlying belief that creativity is an essential part of a child’s education.

Our Junior curriculum has enabled students to explore many other processes, such as collage, frottage, monoprinting, photography, collagraph printing, expressive abstract paintings, and weaving with different materials.

The Mayans and Aztecs, for example, served as an inspiration for our Year 4 students in a unit on symbolism and the work of Keith Haring, where students developed their skills in drawing, printmaking, carving and casting.

ART GALLERY

In the Senior School, we place emphasis on drawing from direct observation, investigation, experimentation and the acquisition of strong technical skills to allow students to generate high quality of work and successfully convey ambitious ideas. We introduce students to a wide range of traditional and contemporary artists for inspiration, we provide them with a repertoire of

department and we take every opportunity to make these happen. Remote learning presented us with many. " Making Masterpieces", an example of this, was launched in response to a global Art initiative by museums around the world, who challenged the public to recreate famous paintings at home during the quarantine. As well as raising our young students’ awareness of Art History, this project brought our community together, as students from all year groups worked towards a common goal, making us feel globally connected.

The end of this year has been marked by our first ever Junior and Senior Exhibition. WCIB artists have done us proud with the exciting work they have produced since the department was born 3 years ago, which is evidence of their hard work, high level of skill and creativity. Congratulations on all your achievements. We are moving onwards and upwards with new exciting developments coming up: our first ever IGCSE cohort next year, and the opening of our brand new facilities the following year. Watch this space!

Year 9 students have learned about face proportions and how to model form through an acrylic self-portrait painting inspired by the work of contemporary artists. They have also experimented with gelli printing.

Year 8 has seen students translate their understanding of cells into intricate textiles pieces, which beautifully combine batik, applique, embroidery, felting and embossing. They have also been challenged to create Cubist collages, digital illustrations, paintings, mobile sculptures and other three-dimensional artworks using a materials such as plaster and polystyrene.

We started the year playing instruments at home, attending lessons online and concentrating on solo work… but we ended it with a full KS2 performance, all together on our main stage.

46 THE WELLINGTONIANTHE2021-2022

SOUND OF MUSIC

In those online lessons, children were able to perform at home, to hone their skills on instruments, to sing and to start to use new technology like BandLab. They filmed their virtual performances and Ms Sinead Corrigan, Head of Music, mixed and edited everything. We all found skills we didn’t know we had!

Music at Christmas is always special and this year we found a new way of celebrating – from the security of our bubbles! The filmed performances were then aired as a glamorous movie premiere with every student dressed in their finery. Highlights were Run Run Rudolph and What Child Is This?

Once back in Junior School, students have been enjoying lunchtime busking on Fridays allowing the chance to perform and entertain students outside the Dining Hall.

MUSIC

Of course, we have had to make some changes to the curriculum because of COVID, but we have not compromised our teaching or our enjoyment – we’ve just adjusted it slightly and kept everyone safe.

This has been an unusual year for Music at Wellington College Bangkok – unusual but inspiring, extraordinary, and uplifting!

Next year will see the first Year 10 students embark on their Music IGCSE programme. This first small group are trailblazers for Wellington College Bangkok. Ms Corrigan says to any student who is not taking Music IGCSE “You can still perform! You can still compose, and you can still learn. Keep enjoying your Music”. She has a message to every child in the school. “Music is for everyone. It’s not just about getting good grades (though that is very important). We are so lucky – we can offer weekly lessons for every child. We want you to make independent listening and performing choices.”

Thank you to Ms Corrigan, to Mr Ben Findlay (and his amazing Green Dream!) and to all our teams. It’s been an extraordinary year, but we have risen to the challenge!

MUSIC 47THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

The busking has become part of our everyday life and students are more and more comfortable taking part. This will carry on next year!

In Senior School the incredible new building has meant two dedicated Music classrooms with every instrument imaginable. We even have our own Mixing Room and a host of practice rooms and areas. Students have had the chance to perform in the beautiful new Atrium during the school day and many students have taken part in a lively Rock Band Enrichment – supported by our own Mr Jamie Scammells.

Our Music scholars have performed, they have competed, and they have inspired us all. It’s been a pleasure to listen to Naya, Matt, Etti and Suri with a special mention to Yuri, still in Year 6. We are proud of you all.

In the Senior School across Lent and Summer Term students created

This year, we have seen many amazing performances mainly centred around Summer Term. Three major highlights were Bollywood Dance, The Green Dream and Shakespeare Sharings. Bollywood Dance caught the imagination of our Junior School. As part of the Discover India Week across the Junior School students learned about the geography, the traditions, the language and the culture of India. They put their knowledge to practical use by learning and performing a colourful dance which entertained the audience and made a lovely film to share with parents.

48 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022 WHAT A PERFORMANCE!

From Early Years, our teachers encourage children to be creative, to invent characters and express themselves in many different ways. Role play is a significant part of learning across many subjects. As children continue through School they might do drama in class, they might volunteer to be in shows, and they might start to contribute writing, ideas and technical skills.

Considering that the year began online and that we have spent some time in bubbles this year we have been able to see some incredible performances over the last few months. Every student has been able to experience the thrill of acting and the joy of singing and dancing – no matter how big or small the stage.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE! GREEN DREAM

We can’t wait to see who and what will make the stage next year!

performances of their own versions of three Shakespeare plays – “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (Year 7), “Romeo & Juliet” (Year 8) and “Macbeth” (Year 9). This involved a set of five student-led “sharings” from Years 7, 8 and 9, where everyone worked across a variety of disciplines to create a work of art and share it with the school community. Great performances showed a real understanding of the Bard's works by our students who chose which character they would play, and which parts of the Shakespeare plays they wanted to present. They wrote narration, worked to integrate musical elements to the sharing, helped choreograph physical scenes, and selected elements of the costumes. This was a truly student led project, and a shining example of how Wellington has led the world in creative education for over 160 years.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE!

many schools have plays written for them, but our Junior School’s own Ben Findlay created an hour-long performance about saving the planet and making a difference. Every KS2 student took part – they acted, they sang, they danced on the big stage. And we were delighted that they got to perform in front of parents who were excited to be invited in. It had been an exceedingly long time since many parents had been in School – and longer still since they had seen a show. Well done to all concerned –musicians, teachers, performers.

Finally, the showstopper which was The Green Dream. Not

Next year sees our inaugural IGCSE Drama course. There is so much more to this than jumping on stage and bringing the house down. Drama is challenging, it’s inventive, it’s creative, it’s hard work. It’s a wonderful foundation for all parts of life.

In Senior School we have enjoyed finding new ways to explore the curriculum including the use of probes to record live data and project work. Students have also had the chance to flex their creative muscles by building eco-systems in a shoe box and using green screen and prosthetics to produce a movie trailer. STEM projects have also allowed students to explore important life skills like ‘How to survive a zombie apocalypse.’ They have collaborated and solved problems in Harkness, they have debated and competed but mostly they have learnt, smiled and laughed. We are all looking forward to a return to IGCSE teaching as well as A-levels further in our future with all the stimulating and useful content that comes with it. We are also looking forward to learning trips and exploring science outside the laboratory as the world becomes safer and we adapt to a new normal. We know the students are ready. The future is bright.Jamie

It has been an amazing year in Science at Wellington College International Bangkok. Our department has expanded and now includes the fantastic Sally Nunes and Kate Salisbury. Their depth of experience, enthusiasm and pure creativity make them the perfect addition to the team! These strengths are secondary to the value they add through their willingness to get to know the students and meet them on their scientific journey.

Returning to School allowed us to give students learning opportunities from a very practical perspective. The WCIB Science department is well stocked with the very latest scientific equipment in two new laboratories, which were nominated for awards at the COBIS conference in London. The students have risen to their new surroundings well – completing innovative new experiments, as well as some of the real classics which have allowed them to experience scientific discoveries as they were originally made.

IN THE LAB

Scammells – Head of Science

In Junior School we have made fossils and dissected frogs but more importantly we have learnt to ask questions and conduct investigations to find out the answers. In the WCIB Science department we know intimately where the students are going all the way to university. It has been a pleasure to see our Year 6 students use their new knowledge of heat transfer to design a product whilst using all their datahandling skills to show their designs are good.

The whole college united as the students focused on the importance of saving energy and having a positive impact on the reduction of Global Warming. Teachers and students alike united in turning off all electricity in Earth Hour. It is fantastic to know that the future of this country and our world is in the hands of young people who already care so much about it. It was thrilling to hear the students in Junior School continue those themes with the Music department in their show ‘The Green Dream.’

SCIENCE 55THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

The official International Duke of Edinburgh Award will commence next year when we would like all our Year 10 students to complete the Bronze. Taking part in the Award takes commitment, a spirit of adventure, decision making, goal setting and perseverance in achieving it. It won’t be easy, however the sense of accomplishment the students will feel at the end of the journey will be worth it, because it will be something they achieved for themselves. It’s also something which shows commitment and reflects well on the students – very important on resumés and applications.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS

Our current Year 9 students have been working with Ms Sally Nunes and Mr Stewart Findlay to learn more about the programme and to prepare for embarking on their Bronze Award next year. We have spent time establishing and presenting the programme to students and parents alike. Students have participated in community service – helping in classrooms, reading with younger students and truly comprehending the service concept of the programme.

before they had even left our campus!

We are delighted and proud that this year we have introduced the Duke of Edinburgh programme to Wellington College Bangkok. Originating in the UK, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework for non-formal education and learning, which challenges young people to dream big, celebrate their achievements and make a difference in their world. Through developing transferable skills, increasing their fitness levels, cultivating a sense of adventure and volunteering in their community, the Award helps young people to find their purpose, passion and place in the world.

The high point of the year was the overnight expedition to Khao Eto in the Prachinburi Province. In preparation, they learned how to build tents, cook, carry out basic first aid and read a map and compass. There was a lot of excitement

With their guides, they took different routes up to the summit and down into the forest where they were able to navigate themselves back to base walking approximately 6 km. The students carried rucksacks that contained their overnight clothes, bedding, and their food for two meals. They showed endurance, resilience, and kindness to each other as they trekked the varied terrain. They camped overnight and cooked their own meals.

With COVID restrictions being lifted, next year the Duke Awards will be able to run as initially intended – the responsibility is on the students to seek out designated challenge leaders and prove they can demonstrate the skills so the leaders can sign off their booklets.

This year saw the introduction of a new awards scheme – the Duke Awards. This award scheme in the Junior School encourages and develops valuable life skills. A large number of children throughout Wellington took part with many enjoying challenges such as memorising an important phone number, learning how to perform basic first aid and being responsible for their own finances. Several completed their booklets and were presented with certificates and the coveted Duke Badge during assembly presentations.

WCIB is a flagship school for Wellington, held up as an exemplar of best design and practice to new partners. This has been especially helpful given that it has not been possible to visit any of our schools in China since early 2020. After Huili School Nantong opens later this year, our next new school to open in August 2023 will be in India, at Wellington College International Pune. Many of its design features have been inspired by our school in Bangkok. Mr Anuj Aggarwal, our partner in India, visited WCIB with his team in early July for an intensive few days to learn from the school.

Exam outcomes are stronger than ever with elite university destinations as well populated by Wellingtonians as they have ever been. TWC’s music, drama, arts, dance, debating and sport all continue to set aspirational standards in the UK, while pastoral care and safeguarding are of the highest standard.

The recent establishment of the college’s purpose for the next period of its history Pioneering education to serve and help shape a better world set it up as a leading influence in education. With the establishment of The Bridge – Wellington’s centre for Teaching, Learning and Research, and the development of the Festival of Education as a global thought-leader, Wellington aims to grow its position as one of the very best and most important schools globally in the 21st century.

Speech Day was held for the first time since 2019, with over 4000 people packed into the big top. Graduation for the 2022 leavers was followed by a catch-up of a different sortthe 2020 leavers missed theirs completely and 185 of them returned to celebrate their Wellington careers.

Iain Henderson Deputy Head (Educational Developments and Partnerships) at Wellington College

Wellington College UK is known within the Wellington Family as TWC or “The Wellington College” – simply to denote that it is the original school. All Wellington Colleges around the world aim to be similarly outstanding in their region, and to be distinctively, recognisably Wellington. Wellington College International School Bangkok is exactly that - the way in which the Wellington values and identity shine through is evident throughout the school.

TWC itself has recently undertaken a full integrated educational quality and compliance inspection from ISI (The Independent Schools Inspectorate). The school was compliant on every area and excellent on the areas of student achievement and personal development. The inspection could not have been more positive, and the report is glowing. This is especially pleasing given the difficult circumstances in recent times, but in all areas, TWC is thriving.

MESSAGE FROM WELLINGTON UK

62 THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

OUR HISTORY, OUR HERITAGE, OUR FAMILY

Wellington College today sets the standards which Wellington College Bangkok follows. Academic achievements are high at IGCSE, A Levels and the IB Diploma Programme. Our students go on to attend the finest universities across the world and then on to forge exceptional careers. The roll of Old Wellingtonians is a rich, diverse and illustrious one. In the UK there is true passion for and commitment to sports of every kind. When you read the elite schools’ sports reports Wellington is often in the forefront – winning tournaments, fielding incredible teams and leading the way. Our incredible Sports teachers here in Bangkok follow this lead and already we have national champions in several sports and more in the Wemaking.hope that every student at Wellington Bangkok will one day get the chance to visit the school in England. We hope they meet the students there and discover shared values, shared hopes and shared passions. We hope they walk in the grounds and enter those hallowed redbrick buildings. The team at Wellington College are ready to welcome you all.

Our roots are in England where Wellington College was founded in 1859. Originally discussed between Prime Minister, Lord Edward Stanley, and Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, following the death in September 1852 of Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, Field Marshal and twice Prime Minister They agreed that a charitable educational institution should be set up both as a monument to the Iron Duke and also as a living institution to educate the orphan sons of army officers.

Wellingtonians are inspired, intellectual, independent, individual and inclusive. We are all proud Wellingtonians.

Wellington today is still in its original home - a beautiful and extensive site in Berkshire. Girls were admitted to the Sixth Form in 1975, and the school became fully co-educational in 2006. The College is now home to 1100 students with over 80% boarding in the houses which give their name to our Houses here in Bangkok.

65THE WELLINGTONIAN 2021-2022

As we come to the end of our fourth year here in Bangkok, we can congratulate ourselves on how far we have come and how much we have done. Wellington College Bangkok is the first South East Asian school in a family of schools which originated in the UK and now spans China, India and Thailand with plans for many more.

The first students arrived in 1859 and ever since the school has been a leader in education in the UK and globally. The school has very strong links to the military - bravery and loyalty are core values. Losses over the years have been high with over1200 Old Wellingtonians killed in the two World Wars. The concept of service is still central at Wellington and the old Wellingtonians are never forgotten.

When you waved goodbye to your Mummies and Daddies it was evident that you were all a little nervous and uncertain of what was to come. Starting school for the first time can be a little scary. However, as the weeks went by, I began to see your confidence grow and your levels of independence flourish. Instead of being worried about leaving your parents, you began to be excited about coming to school!

Over the year, I have shared these words many times with the Kookaburra children, parents, and teachers, and it is true… “The Kookaburra class is amazing!” Kookaburras, you have shown such kindness towards each other and have been so thoughtful in your play. Every member of the class had a wonderful talent to share, whether it was dancing, singing, being a good friend, climbing, writing, running twice around the track, solving problems or using your imagination. Lastly, I wish to say ‘thank you’ - to you – the parents. You have been unequivocally the vital partners in the education of your child. It is you who have influenced their attitude about learning and supported that learning at home. It is you who have been the vital link between home and school. I have watched each of you grow, mature and blossom into the inspired, excitable, compassionate children you now are, and it has been a joy! It’s difficult to choose a highlight, but our recent year group assembly on the importance of education will always stick in my mind. Watching you speak with such passion and confidence about what your education means to you and how you feel when you’re learning, then hearing you urge your schoolfriends and parents to commit to helping others, was something so special. I could not have been prouder.

Good luck next year. Your new teacher is very, very lucky.

We have been on a huge learning journey and incredible progress has been made, but I am most pleased to see how you have each discovered such a love of reading, a love which will stay with you now into adulthood. From Mr. Tumnus to Ambrose the Abominable, we’ve made many new fictional friends this year and have immersed ourselves in the magical worlds of Narnia, the Himalayas and Mount Merapi. I am already looking forward to next year!

HOUSEWinnieCAPTAIN

Ella,Talbotan!Winnie and Clareko, you are our academic power houses, always keen to compete and learn, always willing to help. You are kind, caring and responsible. P and Mark you have grown so much in confidence this year and you are starting to show us all what you are capable of! Ryu thank you for making us laugh in class and for mixing seemlessly between all year groups and helping to bring the whole house together. Peppin and Troy, your enthusiastic personalities are infectious, and you have been pivotal in establishing the open and good-natured environment in our classroom. Max who is always so polite and willing to help and Tasha whose confidence grows daily - both of your contributions to our House extend far beyond the classroom! Nano, thank you for making everyone smile and for bringing everyone together.

Talbot you have been fun, inviting, inspiring and caring and I am very proud to be in our House. How we have evolved over the course of the year! Rising to all of the house challenges with enthusiasm, we have displayed our talent and have demonstrated everything that it means to be a

I’ve admired your positivity throughout all of this, as well as your inclination to pull together and support each other. I think this is the essence of our House Spirit: quiet positivity, resilience, and an instinct to look out for the needs of our peers. With this spirit, you’ve all grown considerably this year, whether that meant applying yourselves more in lessons, taking a greater share of responsibility in House or school events, being a better friend to members of the community, or all of the above!

I’ve felt privileged to have accompanied you on this journey, and I’m looking forward to seeing even greater accomplishments from all of you next year!

LYNEDOCH

Lynedoch, what a journey we’ve been on this year! From being cooped up at home for weeks, only able to connect via videoconferencing, to being back at school under intense social distancing restrictions, to finally reclaiming some normality, having some freedom, and even competing in House events and activities. Oh, and there was the minor event of moving into our fantastic new purpose-built Senior School building!

Together, you have been a kind, generous, understanding and supportive group, and it has been a real pleasure to be your tutor. Have a well-deserved, fun and restful break. A new chapter awaits you next year, with even bigger academic and personal adventures!

HOUSE CAPTAIN

Picton do you remember how our story began? It was only a year ago that the Benson family doubled in size, which led to us. Great seeds were planted by a small group of existing Benson members, who welcomed our younger and new students with genuine warmth. Year 7 and 8s, you injected so much energy into the group and did an amazing job at adopting the Senior School routines with maturity and enthusiasm. Year 9s, you have been the perfect ‘older brothers and sisters’, becoming increasingly proactive in taking the lead throughout the year.
