Wellington Sport – Lent Term 1. Golf Wellington College is rapidly developing a reputation as a leading golfing school in Thailand. We look forward to the arrival of Michael Antona, a former golfing professional and a PGA trained coach, to develop our students both physically and in the psychological aspects of the game. There will be three levels of provision for Golf. SNAG is aimed at beginner players, using large headed clubs and tennis balls to develop the fundamentals of the game. Players can graduate from this into the Development Squad, which is aimed at players who can hit the ball, but are not quite ready for the golf course. The third tier is our Competition Squad, who are ready to play on the golf course and represent the School in local events. Players at all levels will get access to the Swing Room with the swing analysis software and virtual golf courses. The Competition Squad will get access to the Unico Golf Course as part of their fee for Golf. Furthermore, both the Development and Competition Squads will have supervised practice with Michael, small group lessons in the Swing Room, and the opportunity to pay for private 1-1 lessons with Michael at their convenience. We will continue with our relationship with Fore Management to ensure we enter all the ISGT events and Faldo Series tournaments held in Asia. We are looking to develop further our strong links with Mr Edmunds and the golf programme at Wellington College UK and collegiate coaches in USA.
2. Tennis Coach J will be already be familiar to many of you who have experienced his unique and pasionate coaching in the Wellington Extra programme. We are expanding our delivery of Tennis to include it as one of five core sports. Coach J and his team will continue to deliver tennis to our youngest players looking for their first taste of the sport. However, Coach J will also assume responsibility for developing a competitive tennis programme here at Wellington College. Tennis will be available on three afternoons, with competitive matches against other schools, and tournaments both attended and hosted.
3. Swimming Swimming is developing extremely well at Wellington College, with the appointment of former three times Olympian James Goddard as our Head of Swimming highlighting our commitment to the sport. There will be two levels for swimming initially. Learn to Swim is aimed at our beginner swimmers not yet ready for the competition squads and looking to develop their technique and water confidence. Our Swim Team Squad will have the opportunity to train in the water up to six times per week. Mr Goddard will discuss with individuals what their minimum expectation should be. Our most competitive swimmers would be expected to train three times per week plus additional land-based fitness work. We have two pools, both short and long course, with electronic timing touch pads for our swimmers to use. Furthermore, we have added to our equipment in our fitness facility for more specific training. We will continue to enter all the events available to us both in Thailand and wider into Asia through the FOBISIA network of schools.
4. Football Our new Director of Football, Paolo Mourinho, has over ten years of elite level coaching experience after the end of his own playing career in Portugal and South America. He is a UEFA B qualified coach and has worked in many elite programmes both in Europe and Asia. The Football programme will feature CanYouKickIt Tots as part of Wellington Extra and aimed at our youngest footballers looking for their first taste and experience of the sport. There will be two levels for players in our Wellington Football Squad, which as the competitive sport for Lent Term will be free of charge. These players will train at the time allocated for their age group. Within this session there will be a development group and a matchday squad with the sessions tailored for the needs of these individual players. Movement between the squads will be encouraged and monitored. This all means we will continue with our ‘Sport for all’ philosophy at Wellington with the added dimension of specialist preparation for our competitive teams. Wellington Football will operate all three terms allowing our best players and most enthusiastic footballers the opportunity to train and play all year round and not just in the Lent Term Football season. Our Football coaches will lead our teams and ensure we get entry into all the big events and tournaments across Asia, whilst preparing our gameday squads for these events. We will of course continue to host events in which our Football squads will get the opportunity to compete.
5. Basketball We are delighted to announce David Bobalik as our Director of Basketball here at Wellington College. David played at collegiate level in USA and is the former coach of the Thailand Women’s team.
