Cancer Support WA is a not-for-profit community organisation established in 1984. Cancer Support WA is the West Australian pioneer of the “wellness approach” to cancer, and continues to be a leading authority on cancer wellness. Cancer Support WA is the only independent cancer wellness organisation in Western Australia which supports people through every stage of every type of cancer. Over 29 years, we have helped and supported thousands of West Australian individuals and families dealing with cancer to achieve peace, wellness and healing.

mission To empower and support individuals and the community toward wellness, healing and sustainable health.

The wellness approach integrates wellbeing practices and natural therapies into a treatment program with the goal of restoring balance and harmony to the mind, body and soul of the person with cancer. This approach is complementary to oncology and mainstream medicine, and includes emotional and practical support, nutrition, yoga, meditation, positive lifestyle changes and access to balanced information. Cancer Support WA’s wellness programs, support services and resources are all designed to empower and support individuals and their families to implement lifestyle changes and positive strategies in their everyday lives to help on their cancer wellness journeys. Cancer Support WA’s main office is located at the heritage listed ‘Wanslea House’ in Cottesloe, Western Australia, with programs offered in Cottesloe, Armadale and other metropolitan and regional venues.

about Cancer Support WA

The new Cancer Wellness Centre has a mission of enabling collaboration among the leading cancer support organisations in Western Australia. Breast Cancer Care WA, melanomaWA and the Brady Cancer Support Foundation are joining Cancer Support WA onsite at Wanslea, which is being redeveloped by the National Trust to become the first holistic, integrative cancer wellness centre in Western Australia.

Cancer Support WA’s current home, Wanslea House in Cottesloe, is being restored and redeveloped by the National Trust to become the Cancer Wellness Centre. Due to open in February 2014, the Cancer Wellness Centre will be the leading cancer education and support facility in Western Australia.

4

Each of the four organisations are represented on the Cancer Wellness Centre Management Committee which was formed in 2012 to establish a world class facility and ensure the continuation of the important work each of these organisations contributes to the fields of cancer support, education, post-treatment care and wellness. Within this new structure, Cancer Support WA is set to become the leading cancer wellness service provider in WA and an Australian authority on the integrative wellness approach to cancer. Development of the Cancer Wellness Centre is well underway and will continue throughout 2013. Because of the impact of the siteworks, most of Cancer Support WA’s client activities will be held at the nearby Cottesloe Civic Centre with some activities held at the Kookaburra Creek Retreat Centre in Armadale during 2013. Details about these venues on page 45. Significant funding for the Cancer Wellness Centre has come from Lotterywest, Brady Cancer Support Foundation, BHP Billiton and inkind contributions from the organisations sharing the facilities.

Cancer Support WA’s 2013 program comprehensively covers important areas of wellness and wellbeing. All of the activities, services and resources in our program are designed to be relevant and inspiring for people with cancer or other chronic illnesses and their carers and families. Many activities and courses are also suitable for anyone in the community interested in supporting their health and learning more about optimal wellness.

Grief & Loss Support Group

Cancer Support WA’s Grief and Loss Group offers hope and healing to anyone bereaved or who has experienced a loss due to cancer. Grief is our natural response to losing someone or something that is deeply meaningful and precious to us. Grieving the loss of a loved one to cancer can be a profoundly isolating and personal experience. Yet shared in the presence of others whom recognise our hurt and sorrow, who have travelled this path themselves, offers an opportunity for support and reassurance steeped in care and compassion. Facilitated by Mike Sowerby. Last Thursday of each month 1pm-3pm. No charge

Facilitated by Dina Tabeart. No charge for referral service. Counselling sessions are free and provided by Financial Counselling Australia.

Maya Mrkic - Gonging and Sound Healing Join sound healer, musician and visionary artist Maya Mrkic for a gonging session with the giant Mayan gongs and talk on the history and healing properties of the Gongs and their astounding healing properties. Gongs are made by combining certain metals in intense heat and exist for hundreds of years, long after we have gone, maturing in sound. Sound Healing or Gonging in this case, is very gentle and non invasive. It has been used for thousands of years in many cultures around the world. On a spiritual level it helps to release blockages, making it easier to understand current problems or long term feelings of being “stuck”. This session is a unique opportunity to experience these ancient gongs, and meet Maya, a remarkable artist and healer who has touched the lives of many people through her art and gonging sessions.

June Guest Speaker

Dr. Joanne Samer – A Doctor’s Journey with Cancer How do you decide what will be best for you and your family as you deal with the choices for your treatment and care? What happens when the treatment options run out? Who takes control of your care – you or your Doctor? What if you don’t get on with your Doctor? What if your cancer may affect other family members and their risk of getting the same illness? Should you change your diet, meditate and become a new age, sensitive “cancer guru”? To discover your own personal answers to these complex questions that most cancer patients face at some stage in their journey, come along and hear Dr Joanne Samer, a local medical practitioner who has faced all of these and more and found her own answers. Joanne was diagnosed with Medullary Thyroid Cancer 18 years ago when her only son was just 2 years old. In addition, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis not many years before, adding to the complexity of the health issues she has faced over the years. Ironically, MS and cancer share many similar management issues so Joanne’s learning and journey have been all the more powerful for the double diagnosis of living with two life threatening diseases – both of which are still a threat to Dr Samer’s life.

Michele Alexander - Life skills to overcome cancer Michele was 47 when she found a lump in her breast three years ago. Married with a 10 year old son and a business coaching business franchise, she was not about to let this life threatening illness bring her down. Instead she used all the knowledge, experience and life skills which she had built a career on to handle the challenges she was facing in her own life. This was a matter of putting what she preached into practice – and her life literally depended upon it. Michele will share the strategies she used to regain her health and find her life purpose. All of us have habits which aren’t conducive to good health. What we may not realise is that in the long term these habits can contribute to disease, particularly cancer. It’s never too late to make lifestyle changes and it’s never too late to be healthy. In fact it can be fun to be healthy if you get your family, friends and colleagues involved.

At Cancer Support WA we promote healthy lifestyle choices which lead to a long life, good health and happiness. We have seen many people recover from cancer through making changes to their everyday lives which address stress levels, diet, exercise and emotional wellbeing. We understand that it is hard to change, which is why we have developed a program of activities and services to support people on their wellness journeys. By participating in Healthy Habits Week you will be supported to be as healthy as you can possibly be for 1 week (and hopefully longer!) We encourage workplaces, schools, institutions and individuals to get involved. Participants can seek sponsorship from their community to help them reach their goals to make this the healthiest week of their lives so far and to raise funds for Cancer Support WA. Lots of great events are planned during the week.

October Thursday 24th Oct Cancer Support WA AGM 6pm-8pm. Our AGM is a celebration of our past year’s achievements and a presentation of our visioning for the year ahead and future. See page 44

October Guest Speaker

Scott Russell Hill - Opening to Spirituality As his head slipped below the water’s surface one last time, Scott Russell took his last breath at the age of seven. Miraculously, he escaped an unscheduled passing. Restoration of life, however, was not his only blessing. Scott resurfaced with a sixth sense. Despite this, Scott’s professional career didn’t begin in the spiritual field. It began as a messenger at Parliament House, and then as a DJ and journalist.

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but by the end of the week you will feel fantastic and very proud of having overcome years of bad habits and committing to a healthy, new you.

Scott’s life looked normal on the outside, but inwardly he was experiencing an unusual mix of spiritual and psychic encounters. Demand for his ‘talent’ grew rapidly and Scott started ‘reading’ full-time and writing his first book, Caught Between Two Worlds (1995). Other books soon followed Psychic Detective, and Truth & Lies of the New Age. Sure to be a fascinating, insightful and interactive evening. Don’t miss it!

Vanessa Jean Boscarello Women’s Healing

We understand that cancer is expensive, especially for people who seek out natural and holistic therapies to complement their treatment. For this reason, many of our programs are free or greatly subsidised for members to ensure they are affordable. All of our core activities are free for anyone with cancer experiencing financial hardship. Currently, our inhouse fundraising efforts contribute more than 70% of the cost of delivering the wonderful activities and services in this program. Fees for service and membership fees contribute less than 5% of the organisation’s overall income. This is why we need your help. It is through the generous contributions our supporters make to our raffles, mail campaigns and through donations that we are able to deliver our 2013 program and activities. As well as the initiatives outlined in this program we will also be busy during 2013 with the following activities and invite you to contribute whenever you can.

Raffles Each year, we host three major raffles with fantastic prizes including cars, cash and shopping vouchers! Tickets are available from Cancer Support WA. Ticket books are available for individuals, groups, schools and businesses wishing to assist us with ticket sales. Get in touch to help with our current raffle.
