High quality cold pressed oils are a key ingredient in expert food preparation. Keep a selection of quality oils in your pantry for perfectly inspired cooking and meal preparation not to mention the health benefits. Drizzling olive oil on salad, as a dipping for crusty bread, a base for marinades or on pasta is an experience in taste. Use the subtle flavour of sesame oil in Asian dishes; the stable quality of coconut oil for high temperature cooking; or the neutral aroma and flavour of grapeseed for that special meal. Flaxseed is a fabulous health additive that can be taken by the spoonful or added to smoothies.

publisher's letter Everyone has something they don’t like about their body; surprisingly even supermodels are known to bemoan a slightly skew mouth or knobbly knees. As you get older, some issues aren’t as important as before, while others begin to emerge. But, your body, with all its flaws and beauty is the one you’ve been given so it’s vital to make the very best of what you have, and learn to love every inch of it. In this issue, we explore the splendour of your body and mind and talk about how to truly nurture yourself. After reading our boxing feature, I am inspired to try out a class– not only is it great for fitness and getting in to shape, it helps vent daily stress we invariably collect. We all know that eating food that satiates and nourishes brings better weight control and offers the right kind of energy and sustainable vitality. Understanding your body and listening to what it’s saying about your state of health and mind goes a long way in understanding what type of food or eating routine is best for your individual needs. As William Shakespeare said, ‘Now, good digestion waits on appetite, and health on both’. There’s currently a global obesity epidemic and according to statistics released by GlaxoSmithKline, South Africans aren’t immune – more than 61% of SA adults are overweight, and 78% of those people are obese. The Heart and Stroke Foundation says that heart attacks and stroke kill three South Africans every hour and that our national mortality rate is rising every year, even though people are living longer globally. This is entirely unacceptable because obesity and its related diseases are wholly controllable and avoidable. Getting a sense of how your brain is wired is also critical to learning to understand and love who you are. If you can understand how you translate the world, you may be able to listen to your body more effectively. You only have one body and one life. It makes sense to do all you can to ensure life is lived to the fullest and body is revered as the extraordinary, delicate machine it is. OMISSION: Apologies for the omission in the October Men’s Issue. The Back to Basics feature was written by Certified Chiropractic Wellness Lifestyle Practitioner Dr Robert Delgado. The Sort it Out feature was written by Wellness Chiropractor Dr Greg Venning.

10 TOP TIPS - eating to feel good > Keeping your body at the weight you are supposed to be will make you light on your feet, you will feel mobile, flexible and youthful, able to multi-task and take on everything required of you. A woman’s power and ability is in her sensitivity. Without heavy energy from the wrong food you will activate both sensitivity and radiance. Historically, our bodies and their functions are ancient. Is it possible we thrive best on natural foods and that we cannot digest synthetic foods? Because a woman’s system is more sensitive and consequently less forgiving with regard to food it is greatly important for us to eat correctly. We can choose foods that enliven or calm; that cleanse or sustain, foods that work naturally for women.

"Feeling good automatically means looking good."

HAPPY HORMONES Woman's hormones have the capacity to make us empathetic, compassionate, patient and intuitive. These are the characteristics of estrogen. They predispose us towards kindness, sweetness, gentleness and healing emotions. Oxytocin inclines us towards being social networkers. Woman's testosterone makes us fierce, determined and strong. We can balance our hormones by using nutrition to support our best and most lofty emotions. Many foods balance hormones and we can keep ours in check with carefully chosen nutrition.

1. Keep your blood sugar stable by eating regular smaller meals and avoiding sugar laden foods. This will give you energy throughout the day.

2. Avoid eating sugars, processed carbs and bad fats. In the body these turn to fat and

LIGHT EATING CHOICES •

create a thick meshing of proteins in the skin and around our organs. This obstructs our natural life force and vitality.

3. Be more alkaline, when you are alkaline your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system relax and heal. You feel love and peace. This supports self-growth in a physical and experiential manner.

4. Make food part of your self-love. Eat foods that love you back. Certain foods are very

FOOD FOR WOMEN did you know? Women have an incredibly efficient metabolism; nature gave us the ability to grow a baby - the fact is our metabolism is up to 50% more efficient than men's even though it may burn slower and make do for longer with less. This means whatever you eat can last you for longer. 6

All this energy focused on ‘being good enough’ take us away from visioning, manifesting, creating a better society, more harmony and ultimately peace in the world. We so desire these and have the capacity to manifest them. Yet, in time spent distracted on the external we lose sight of higher pursuits. Nutrition plays a huge role in balancing moods and helping us to feel everything you need to live life well

beautiful – is it possible that they might create beauty? Include Superfood green powders like Rainbow Vibrance or spirulina for vitality.

5. Acknowledge and give thanks, say a prayer before eating. Take a moment to calm yourself,

tune into your body, breathe, and welcome the food. Your body will accept the food much more easily and digestion will be heightened.

6. Eliminate efficiently. Insufficient elimination creates auto toxification. Only use a laxative as share your

amazing. Given a chance, the body will always strive towards perfect balance and health. Feeling good is our birthright. Feeling good automatically means looking good. We can achieve this with positive lifestyle habits and sound nutrition. Of course, different body types and temperaments have different needs but every individual can easily get to know what works for them personally.

10 TOP TIPS

eating to feel good >

an occasional detoxer to move waste through the system. Use powder rather than tablets as it can be sensitively administered. (e.g. aloe bitters) Make sure you digest meals within 24 hours, anything longer makes you toxic.

7. Cleanse. When we fall off the wagon, there are many ways to rapidly return to health. Balance a period of eating poorly with: Bentonite clay; Psyllium husk; Digestive enzymes, Flax seed powder and lots of water; Drink green Juice and/ or lots of veggies (veggies work similarly to bentonite, they mop up toxic spills in the body and draw toxins from the colon, the tissues and blood stream).

SIP ON •

8. Snack mindfully. Be aware of foods you like to binge on. When hungry, don’t eat the first

thing that comes to mind, often this means chips or sweets. You’ll make yourself feel sick (toxic or sugared out) and/ or you’ll overeat. See the list below for ideas on healthy snacks.

9. Abstain. Occasional periods of abstention are healthy and good. See how light you feel when not weighed down by food. Though it is natural, physiological and divine to eat, highly evolved mammals often don’t eat. Fasting is also a recommended practice amongst many. Could there be a creative upside to a little less than over-abundance? When we say, ‘I am starving,’ is that really true? Research shows the healthiest people on earth have moderate calorie intake with high nutrient content. Intense hunger usually lasts for 10 – 15 minutes; if you hold out, you will get a second wind. You might feel acidic as the body goes into detox mode. Drink water to dilute the acidity and have a green powder or green juice. Green juice feeds the cells nutritionally and supports detoxification. Flax seed oil curbs hunger pangs and helps detox especially when your tummy is empty

10. Drink ample water. Water is precious and pure tasting. Get the best you can, if it doesn’t taste right you won’t drink it. Aim for a reverse osmosis water purifier. Make it affordable by buying one to share with neighbours. Avoid plastic bottles, they are a mounting eco problem. Use glass. Even if you just drink water for an afternoon or a day, your body will mobilise stored calories and your tissues will be washed. Drink water 10 – 20 minutes before a meal to quench your thirst. Often we mistake thirst for hunger. Drinking straight after a meal is said to dilute the digestive enzymes required for digesting food.

DAILY MEAL PLAN

RAINBOW VIBRANCE - Each scoop provides 4½ servings of fresh organic RAW fruits & vegetables share your #dailymealplan

Honour the rhythms of your day by balancing blood sugar throughout.

M

L

Breakfast: Break the night’s fast with highly digestible foods. Fruit is an abundant source of naturally distilled water which ‘washes’ your system. In addition it is a ‘love food’ – it loves your body; and it is easy to love fruits. Fruit is the best food to plump up your cells with water for a glowing look. Even your lips are fuller when you eat 3 – 5 servings of fruit a day.

EAT: Salad, steamed or baked veggies and a source of protein (tofu, veggie burger or sausage, occasional egg, beans) and whole grains. Eat grains with a vegetarian protein source to improve your protein intake by 30%.

orning: Start with freshly squeezed lemon in water to neutralise acidity left over from the night.

EAT: Fruit with nuts, flax seed, seed mix, or avo, or yoghurt, or a chunk of cheese, or cottage cheese, or flax crackers, or spirulina, or protein powder, or whey powder, or coconut milk or coconut oil. It is important to add protein to your morning meal, it builds muscle, muscle tone and supplies powerful energy which in itself makes you stride out and move with strength. Protein also builds white blood cells, so when flu is pending it is natural to crave more protein to support white blood cells.

unch: Alkalinise yourself by eating raw first until you are fairly full. A salad can satisfy all taste-bud requirements: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and astringent. After that it will be effortless to eat moderate amounts of everything else.

TIP

YOU CAN REDUCE THE GLYCEMIC INDEX OF SOME FOODS BY ADDING PROTEIN E.G CARROT JUICE (ADD A TEASPOON OF ALMONDS), POTATOES OR RICE (ADD BEANS, COTTAGE CHEESE OR AVO)

TIP

THE AMOUNT OF PROTEIN YOU EAT SHOULD BE 1G PER KILO OF YOUR OPTIMUM BODY WEIGHT.

8

D

inner: Eat dinner 2 – 3 hours before sleeping. Let your evening meal facilitate hearty elimination in the morning. Go for light carbs, they encourage serotonin production, the feel-good hormone that eases us into a restful sleep. Mostly all foods supply carbs except the protein foods. Steer away from concentrated proteins, in the evening as they are hard to digest. During the night, the parasympathetic nervous system is very active in detoxing the body. If you eat a big dinner, your body will only have the capacity to digest and process dinner and will not be able to detox from the day. If dinner is light, your body will detox on a much deeper level and you will awaken younger, newer and fresher.

REPLACE SUGAR

Glycosylation is a process where sugar in the blood stream binds with proteins until they become non-functional. All cells in the body comprise of some protein but when proteins attach to sugars, they cannot work effectively. Collagen makes up about 25% of our body's protein content and when damage from glycosylation or oxidation occurs, the skin becomes saggy and wrinkled. This process breaks down the collagen in your skin making skin lose its elasticity and making it more vulnerable to sun damage. Although acne has various contributing factors, such as raised hormone levels and overactive oil glands according to world renowned physician Dr. Nicholas Perricone, inflammation in our skin results from a rapid rise in blood sugar. Large quantities of sugar compromise your immune function resulting in a rapid increase in insulin production, resulting in bruised capillaries, production of more sebum (oil) in the skin (contributing to acne) and inflammation throughout the body. Sugar is easily replaced with fruit. Carbohydrates are easily replaced with fruit and vegetables. They do not lead to glycosylation.

A full colour spectrum superfood (Red, Yellow, Green and Blue) concentrated into each scoop, with massive antioxidant impact & all the phytonutrients (plant based nutrients) so often lacking in our modern day diets. EAT SLOWLY

NOTICE WHEN YOU ARE FULL It takes twenty minutes for the appestat (hypothalamus) to register fullness. Eat slowly to give your body time to realise it is full. Chew each mouthful up to a hundred times. Make sure you are relaxed at mealtime, if you are having an anxious or animated lunch your digestion won’t be as strong. Be aware when you reach for food to calm your emotions. Find something else to calm you, drink water, inhale an aromatherapy oil. Remember if your food is always healthy it might be slightly boring but it will make you feel exceptionally well. You won’t be motivated to overeat but you will be high on feeling good. See if you can be in control of feeling good instead of needing outside influences (a person or event) to trigger this. Cultivate this feeling and come to expect it. It is your gauge to see whether you are in balance or off balance.

Flax fact Flax seed is filled with fiber, lecithin, protein, B vitamins, zinc, potassium, magnesium and essential fatty acids. Two to four tablespoons daily is recommended. It will make you feel fuller for a longer period especially when taken with a meal. The fibre acts as a good laxative and the lecithin breaks up the left over unwanted fat in the digestive tract. It is excellent for the colon and helps relieve ulcers and irritable bowel. It also helps the body absorb calcium. TIP: Drink plenty of fluid when taking flax seed (up to 10 times the amount of flax seed) otherwise it may cause constipation.

Psyllium is full of fibre and acts as a bulk-forming laxative. This stimulates a reflex contraction of the bowel walls and helps stools move smoothly through the colon. Studies indicate that psyllium with its soluble fibers, linoleic acid, and alkaloids can help lower blood sugar levels. It is also an effective natural remedy for diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. Because it is known to soften stools it helps reduce pain and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids. Take 1 teaspoon of psyllium husk mixed in a warm glass of water twice daily. POWER 1000MG SERVING VEGGIE CAPSULES PURE HOODIA

When you’re feeling slightly less than fabulous, a little bit of discipline can go a long way. But, don’t stress yourself out too much – take these steps to ensure you’ll always be able to love the skin you’re in.

buy m e online

B

alance: The Mayo Clinic very simply says that to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. You can either do that by eating less calories, or by exercising more. Don’t starve yourself though, rather ensure a good balance of eating and exercise

S

ay no to no-no’s: We all have a little rebel in us and if you cut everything slightly naughty off your list, you’ll just start to crave it. So, try to rather use sinful delicacies as treats or rewards for yourself, just in smaller amounts than usual.

S

mall steps: If you’re aiming to lose a lot, give yourself small, daily goals. Try counting calories daily, and read food labels carefully. At the end of each day, add up what you’ve achieved and put a monetary value to the calories you’ve not eaten – this money can go towards a new pair of particularly fabulous jeans when you reach your goal

F

orget all the advice: Whatever works for you is best. If you thrive on eating six small meals and exercising at 5am, then that’s what you should do. If it’s three meals and a tiny snack before a midday yoga session, then go for it. The important thing

12

is to do something positive if you need a confidence boost and embarking on a healthier life style or making a few good health choices is the key.

C

hew on it: Take time to enjoy every morsel – if you’re mindful of the nurture you’re offering your body every time you eat, you’ll also be more aware of what your body needs, and you’ll probably eat less if you take your time about it. By chewing more slowly and for longer, you’ll allow more saliva to be created, and this helps with better digestion and protects your teeth from bacterial decay.

W

alk it off: If you’re not a gym bunny or yoga fundi, try to get some exercise in each day – it’ll boost your metabolism and your energy levels. Try parking further away from the entrance to your office or favourite shopping mall so you can get in a few extra steps. It’ll also help you feel that you’re doing all you can to get into fab shape. everything you need to live life well

T

ake it easy: We all know that crash diets are harmful to your health and quick weight loss can’t be sustained. Make slow, viable lifestyle changes that won’t lead you to sneaking a dip into the cookie jar at midnight.

T

reat every day as a new day: If you completely fail at your healthy eating plan on a night out, don’t berate yourself and give up. Treat each day as a brand new opportunity to be even more fabulous than the day before – and don’t give hope, either, if you’re struggling with your new routine or aren’t seeing results just yet.

8 TIPS to make sure you love being in your skin

Hoodia controls hunger without nervousness, upset stomach, racy heart, elevated body temperature or sleep interruption. It can be safely and comfortably taken at night when snacking is most prevalent. Hoodia is perfect for anyone who struggles with hunger, cravings or portion size. It is the perfect way to control appetite while re-training eating habits. It is not a stimulant nor does it possess any thermogenic properties. Permanent weight loss usually dictates that changes in one's eating habits must take place. Unfortunately, most people find it difficult to make the necessary dietary changes when they are hungry. That is why Hoodia is so effective. A prominent manufacturer cites a clinical trial involving 18 human volunteers that found Hoodia consumption reduced food intake by about 1000 calories per day compared to a placebo group. Should be used in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and exercise.

COOK UP SOME LOVE By Charlotte Bieldt

The ancients certainly knew how to keep the home fires burning - herbs and spices have been used as aphrodisiacs for centuries and these age-old sexy substances still pack a punch today.

A

ccording to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a third to as much as half of all women will face low libido at some point in their lives. Although men don’t seem to experience this to such a degree, experts agree that low libido is increasingly becoming a problem for guys, too. Nutritional therapist Hannah Kaye notes that in addition to the many stress-reducing and immune-boosting properties of certain herbs and spices, their sensual smell can take your desire up a notch. So, cook up a little love tonight with these: Maca: a well-known aphrodisiac and adaptogen (a substance that normalises and regulates the systems of the body, especially when under stress) that balances hormones, and reduces adrenal fatigue while increasing sexual function. Tribulus Terrestris (Gokshura): this herb is most often used in treatments for infertility, erectile dysfunction and low libido. It enhances testosterone and oestrogen levels – hormones vital for optimal sexual function. It has the added benefits of

14

enhancing sperm production, strengthening erection and speeding up the sexual recovery rate in men. For women this herb will alleviate menopause symptoms, and this may enhance sexual performance. Siberian Ginseng: this herb increases the desire for physical contact, and enhances energy and stamina levels during sex. Horny Goat Weed: possibly one of the most popular and widely used aphrodisiacs. It allows more blood flow to the genitalia, enhancing sexual satisfaction. Shatavari: is a supreme tonic for women. This nifty little herb brings all the symptoms of a woman’s sexual health into balance. It stimulates fertility, alleviates menopausal symptoms and regulates the hormones that govern sexual health. Damiana: if you are aware that your low libido might have a strong emotional root, Damiana will be able to help. In men it calms inflammation of the prostate, stimulates testosterone levels and promotes the ability to achieve an orgasm. For women it relieves anxiety, stress or depression, enhances sex everything you need to live life well

drive, produces a short-lived euphoric state and helps to balance hormones.

INCREASE YOUR SEX DRIVE

Aniseed, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cloves, Ginger and Cardamom can also be used to increase sex drive. It is important to remember that prolonged periods of stress start to affect hormones - particularly the sex hormones like testosterone and progesterone. Hannah Kay maintains that if you manage your stress levels well, it makes sense your sex drive will also be well managed. She adds that using a combination of lifestyle changes, herbs and spices to aid sex drive is a sure way to get the best results. “The human body is complex and herbs alone won't do the trick,” she says. “It’s important to consult your health care practitioner before adding any herbs and spices to your diet as some may contraindicate certain medications.”

to consume is food your body wants. Be relaxed when eating, watching horror movies when your adrenalin is activated could make you metabolise fear. Pause for a second and give thanks for the food. This will put your body in receiving mode and activate the right conditions for good digestion. When we eat without being hungry, our digestion is at an all time low, food sits in the body and toxins accumulate.

“Simply stated, when the digestive fire is strong, we thrive. When it is weak, we suffer.”

Eat in order Eat easily digestible foods first and then the more complex ones. Liken this to a road, if slower cars are upfront they block the faster cars behind them. Digestion happens more or less in this order. Liquids, fruit, smoothies, soups, vegetables, beans, grains, starches, meat, fish, poultry.

FIRE BELLY Digestion is an incredible alchemical process, if you think of the food on your plate transforming into energy, fuelling cellular regeneration, creating chemicals and fluids and helping to repair muscles and bones, the least we can do is provide optimal digestive conditions. Some traditional healing cultures revere digestion as a near holy process worthy of great attention and respect.

did you know? Good posture can enhance digestion. When you slouch you compress the digestive organs in your abdomen. Elongate your spine to give space to your internal organs. 16

T

he ancient science of Ayurveda sees digestion as a sacred fire that burns in the belly transmuting the food we eat into important elements of body, mind and spirit. The power of this digestive fire is a key factor in overall health. Everyone knows what it feels like when digestion isn’t working optimally, feeling bloated, sluggish, nauseous, with cramps and fatigue are just some of the symptoms. Keep your digestion functioning at its best with practices your body will love. See food as a precious gift to the body Food packaging and supermarket displays take us a step away from connecting with everything you need to live life well

the source of food. We focus on packaging and label claims instead of activating our natural instinct that tells us to eat or not eat a particular food. Interestingly, research done on kids found that many of them had no idea the packaged chicken or beef on the shelf actually came from animals. To them it was just food. When choosing food for your body, look at it with a view to nourishing your body, see if your stomach would choose it rather than letting your taste buds or impulse make the choice. Make sure your body is ready to eat There are so many processes that happen when you eat. See if your body is ready to receive food and if the food you are about

Switch on to good choices When you eat healthy food you become more discerning. Suddenly you can smell the bad oil and preservatives in processed meals and they don’t seem appealing anymore. When you treat your body to fresh wholesome and natural food you will crave this option rather than a fast food choice. Is the food in front of you pleasing and will it leave you satisfied, light and energetic? Start digestion in the mouth Chew each mouthful at least 100 times until every morsel of food is liquidised. This is especially important when it comes to meat. Mix your food well with saliva, it is loaded with amylase, a starch digesting enzyme. Thousands of tiny neuro-receptors in the mouth send messages to the brain about how to prepare the system for the type of mouthful on its way. Fatty foods trigger the liver to produce extra bile and if necessary call on the gallbladder to be ready with a store of bile for extra fatty food. Bile is very potent, and is the main constituent for digesting fat. Keep stomach acid functioning well Stomach acid sterilizes food, breaks down protein into amino acids for absorption into the blood stream and helps the pancreas send neutralizing fluid to the upper small intestine so nutrients can move into the blood stream. Stomach acid is very strong with a pH of about 2. If you take too many antacids you will impair digestion and prevent optimal nutrient absorption. Drinking liquids while eating will dilute stomach acid and all the digestive enzymes.

(amylase for starch in the saliva, proteases for protein from the pancreas and lipase for fats in the bile). A sip of water to lubricate the swallowing process is fine but don’t down a whole glass. Eat lightly Overloading the stomach puts out the digestive fire and it takes a long time to recover. Stop eating just before you are full. Avoid eating too close to bedtime. Finish your meal at least two hours before sleeping. Give your digestive system a rest. Protein takes enormous energy to digest, rather eat this in the earlier part of the day. A proven method of life extension is calorie restriction. Some people work better on smaller more frequent meals but it is usually a good thing to give your digestion periods of rest. Choose smart food combinations Certain food combinations, even if they are healthy foods, will form toxins and gases and won’t digest properly. Different classes of food require specific digestive enzymes. Eating many diverse foods together require the digestive glands to manufacture and secrete different digestive enzymes simultaneously. For example, citrus fruit with milk can diminish digestion, upset intestinal flora, produce toxins, and cause sinus congestion.

COMBININATIONS TO AVOID: • • • •

Milk or yogurt with sour or citrus fruits. Cooked and raw foods at the same meal. Meat protein and milk protein. Eat melons by themselves and not with other food. Optimally fruit should be eaten separately. Do not mix fresh milk with other dairy products. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach curdles the milk.

TIP USE GINGER - Ginger increases digestive fire, neutralises toxins and helps food absorption. It also has healing properties. Use it in your meals, eat crystallised ginger before meals or drink ginger tea. A cup of green tea with a sliced fresh ginger and lemon will boost your digestive ability.

Your body is your subconscious mind By Glenn-Douglas Haig Dr. Candice Pert is one of my favorite leading scientists in the world – she who first discovered endorphins and serotonin: those amazing neuropeptides or ‘nerve proteins’ responsible for us feeling good and happy after exercising. She spent the last 40 years discovering that our bodies are far more intelligent than we ever imagined and that they hold our wisdom, memories and subconscious behavior patterns, mostly in our gut and internal organs, but also throughout our extremities. We have more neuropeptide receptors (those little nerve endings designed to engender emotions and feelings in us) in our stomach area than in our brains. Science is finally catching up with metaphysicians who have known for centuries that our bodies have their own intelligence, independent from our conscious thinking minds. This is not only true for basic intelligence such as our bodies having a sense of knowing whether a situation is dangerous or safe, or whether a person can be trusted or not, but our bodies are also capable of far more complex intelligence such as deep-seated belief systems that might limit or support us throughout our lives. In other words, your thinking mind is only a part if your intelligence – your body makes up the rest of it. In fact, Dr. Pert goes so far as to say that our body’s intelligence is far more powerful than our conscious mind, because it literally houses our subconscious mind, and if we want to truly change the way we habitually react to life, we need to work at the level of our bodies. The good news is we have amazing tools at our disposal to change our limiting subconscious thought patterns to supportive, liberating ones and it starts with simply becoming aware. Become aware that your body has a mind of its own and treat is as an intelligent being… listen to it, nurture it and reward it with good food, plenty of fresh air and exercise and it will literally turn old toxic thoughts into vibrant new ways of thinking and being.

READ YOUR BELLY

7-PRODUCTS-IN-1

Before you eat something, notice whether you are actually hungry. Feel the sensations in your belly. Check to see if a glass of water is what you really need. Perhaps you are standing in front of the fridge because you are bored or frustrated. Hunger is a signal that the digestive fire is ready to burn. Wait until you feel hungry before eating. Not so hungry that you reach for a quick fix junk food option but hungry enough to want something nutritious. Once you have established this, please your body by making your offering delicious and satisfying.

Amylases reduce large carbohydrates to disaccharide’s including sucrose, lactose, and maltose. Lipases digest fats into free fatty acids and glycerol. Cellulases break the bonds found in fibre. Invertase is a disccharidase that works to break down sucrose (refined table sugar) into glucose and fructose.

BREATHE, UNWIND, RELAX DEEPLY

Stress and Exhaustion Opposite ends of the same problem – each requiring very different treatments

You may want to do this in private, but do it you should – pranayama, alternate nostril breathing can improve sleep, boost your thinking, calm your emotional state and your nervous system. All it takes is a few minutes daily.

Here’s how: There are numerous techniques for alternate nasal breathing, the exercise below is for calming. 1. 2. 3. 4.

5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Use your right thumb to close off your right nostril. Inhale slowly through left nostril. Pause for a second. Now close your left nostril with your ring finger and release your thumb off your right nostril. Exhale through your right nostril. Inhale through right nostril. Pause. Use your thumb to close off right nostril. Breathe out through left nostril.

Begin slowly, without forcing your breath. Repeat this a few times and sit quietly for a few moments once you’re finished. You can also do the exercise by inhaling for four counts, holding for four and exhaling for four.

When you consciously breathe through alternate nostrils it activates your whole brain.

Over time adrenal glands become exhausted from continuously producing too much cortisol

did you know? Yogis have believed for thousands of years that many diseases are a result of disrupted nasal breathing. Your nose is directly linked to your nervous system and brain. Your left nostril accesses the right hemisphere of your brain – the feeling area; and your right nostril accesses the thinking area.

STRESS • Ability to cope well with stressful situations • Sugar cravings • Reduced immune function • Increased risk of heart attacks/strokes

EXHAUSTION • Insufficient ability to cope with stressful situations • Fatigued and exhausted • Possible aches, pains or inflammation

NOTE IF YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, IT’S UNWISE TO DO THIS EXERCISE. IT’S BEST TO PRACTICE ALTERNATE NASAL BREATHING ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

STAGE 2: EXHAUSTION

– too much cortisol (also known as stage 1: Adrenal stress) Excessive stress, be it work-related, family or financial, causes your adrenal glands to release large amounts of the stress hormone, cor tisol. Although people with high cor tisol can usually handle stress well on the outside, on the inside cortisol raises blood pressure and can damage the hear t and brain cells. Other symptoms can include sugar cravings, poor quality sleep and impaired immune function.

– too little cortisol (also known as stage 2: Adrenal fatigue) After years of stress, the adrenal glands can become exhausted. As a result they produce less and less cortisol, and your ability to handle stress goes down, too. After a while, the levels of cortisol can become so low that fatigue and exhaustion sets in. Even the simplest of tasks can seem overwhelming. Sensitivity to pain is also increased and you may be more likely to experience inflammation, although this is not always the case.

Nutraceuticals can help STRESS: Take Stress Damage Control™ to help reduce

EXHAUSTION: Take Burnout™ if you are exhausted from

excessive cortisol and to help you cope with stress. If you have the symptoms of stress (stage 1), take 1 capsule of Stress Damage Control™ twice daily to help prevent excessive cortisol production and to help protect the adrenal glands from exhaustion. Stress Damage Control™ contains herbal extracts from Rhodiola rosea and ashwagandha which also help protect the heart and brain from damage caused by cortisol excess.

months or years of prolonged exposure to stress. If you have the symptoms of stage 2 adrenal fatigue and find stressful situations overwhelming, Burnout™ contains ginseng and liquorice extracts, which energise and help nurture exhausted adrenals back to normal function and healthy cortisol production. Take 1 capsule twice daily.

Schweden-Bitter – Improves digestion

METABOLIC WAKE UP

We’ve all heard the comment about a really skinny person that they’re lucky to have been born with a fast metabolism. While genetics do play a role, you can boost yours by making a few good healthy living decisions.

M

etabolism can be explained by the amount of energy your body uses, or burns, to maintain its functioning. If you’ve got a slow metabolism you may feel sluggish and battle to lose weight. A fast metabolism, however, means your body burns up energy (or calories) speedily.

Boost yours with these tips: Exercise It’s no secret that exercise is good for you. Aerobic activity helps you to burn calories (get your aerobic exercise in during the morning as it’ll keep your energy levels up the whole day), while strength training helps build muscle mass (muscle burns more energy than fat, even when you’re sleeping) – both are important for helping your body function optimally. Yoga, tai chi and qigong are all great for balancing your energy – the gentle movements open up the body’s energy pathways.

Slurp Drink water – it’s vital to ensure you’re hydrated all day. Even if you aren’t doing any exercise or aren’t sitting out in the sun, your body needs liquid for your metabolism to do its job well.

24

Get a B Ensure you’re getting enough B vitamins, particularly B12, which is a must for flagging energy levels. Other supplements that really help with fatigue and boosting metabolism are co-enzyme Q10, L-carnitine, and green tea extract. Ginseng is a good energy booster, but needs to be taken with caution if you suffer from high blood pressure.

Eat often It’s easy in today’s frenetic world to forgo a meal for a meeting or some other important task – but that’s just going to mess with your metabolism. Make sure your energy levels are optimised all day long by eating low GI food that’s nutrient rich. Don’t grab a chocolate bar if you’re running late – rather have a banana or something to sustain your energy instead of spiking and then depleting it.

Don’t starve You may want to lose weight and believe that restricting your calorie intake will do the trick, but if you eat less than 1,000 calories per day, your body will move into starvation mode and this will slow down your metabolism. Don’t eat less, eat smart. A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition says that restricting food can everything you need to live life well

suppress your metabolism by up to 20%. Don’t diet without also exercising – it’ll do more harm than good.

Breakfast Your mom probably told you this – but it’s true. Most people expend most of their energy during the day and if that’s you, eat breakfast to give your body an energy kickstart to the day. Eat your biggest meal in the morning, and slow down to smaller or lighter and less calorific later in the day and at night.

Be a sleepy head Make sure you get enough sleep – scientists have linked lack of sleep to slower metabolic rates.

Giggles Laughter is an easy, free and fantastic way to boost your health, and your metabolism. So, if your body needs a bit of shaking up, spend time watching or listening to your favourite comedian. It’s not difficult to give your metabolism a boost – integrate good eating habits, a dose of exercise, loads of water and a spoonful of honey to get yourself on the road to feeling good.

we use when we self-talk. Notice people who often say, Sounds nice, or Listen here, they are processing input in their auditory channel. Depending on an individual’s dominant channel, someone might say, Nice to see you, (visual) while another may say, Nice to speak to you (auditory). Then we have the pro-prioceptive. Think of expressions like, My heart is fluttering; I have butterflies in my stomach, or He’s a pain in the neck. These phrases all relate to sensations and feelings. Pro-prioceptive is active when someone speaks of being turned on or off, feeling depressed or feeling pain or joy.

Turn on your senses

Share with us your #sensorytip @wellnews

See how your brain is wired and discover whether you translate the world primarily through your auditory, visual, pro-prioceptive or kinesthetic sense.

did you know? Intuitive flashes or insights are more likely to come from a state of being open to receiving rather than from a state of intent pursuit. A relaxed and grounded state of mind becomes fertile ground for insight and intuition.

O

ur temperaments, personalities, inclinations and bodies all differ in varying aspects making up the unique individuals we are. This article looks at four of the sensory channels through which we interpret the world. Within these four channels you can understand yourself better by noticing which one you spend the most energy in. You might use your visual or auditory sense more than your pro-prioceptive or kinesthetic sense. Someone who says: I hear you, is obviously set in his auditory channel, whereas someone who says: I see what you mean, might be more rooted in the visual. Subtle everything you need to live life well

hints in our choice of words often indicate where our brains spend more time. Most of us have a more developed visual sense. This is the place we see patterns and it is where we develop ‘insight’. It tends to be enhanced by the amount of visual input we have around us, television and on screen interaction makes us more visually aware. In the auditory channel we focus on sound: verbal communication, music tone, tempo, pitch and volume . It is also the channel

to train the brain >

The kinesthetic sense looks at body movement and position. Educationalists have identified people classified as kinesthetic learners. These people learn better through moving their bodies or by doing rather than merely listening. Kinesthetic also determines how much we know about where our body is in space and in relation to other bodies or objects. Some people tend to use their bodies less, hardly ever moving certain body parts while others use them a lot. Think of people who speak with dramatic hand movements. The brain has numerous centres dedicated to sense perception and we all have the ability to sense across a broad spectrum. Our bodies are like antenna with the capacity to pick up input on many different levels but sometimes we are more in tune with certain frequencies than others. Technology also primes us more towards the visual, we are bombarded with hours of screen time everyday through computers, televisions, smart phones and Ipads. This makes us skilled in pattern recognition and spatial awareness. But it may also suppress our ability to recognise and appreciate our other senses. To create a greater connection to the world around us, we can enhance our perception across all senses rather than experiencing mainly from one or two channels. We can explore and cherish our senses, celebrating their function and application. Practise sensory awareness by focusing or developing an awareness of each different sense, one at a time.

to train the brain > 1. Pro-prioception Practice your balance by standing on one leg. To challenge this exercise try closing your eyes. If you can master that, lift your hands to the sky and ground your legs until you balance. Using dance to move all parts of your body is also a great way to evolve proprioceptively.

2. Audioception Take a trip to the forest or your nearest park and listen to the sounds of nature. Close your eyes and meditate on one particular sound. Listen to a piece of music and isolate the different instruments you hear.

3. Tactioception It is one thing to go for a massage to feel the skin you are in. But try sitting quietly and sensing different parts of your body without having tactile cues. The easiest place to start is the hands and feet. Master that then see if you can locate your internal organs by naming each one and focusing on them individually.

4. Gustaoception You should always eat slowly to aid digestion. This exercise gives you an excuse to slow down. Rather than mindlessly swallowing, feel the textures, switch on your taste buds and turn up the volume on flavours and taste.

5. Olfacoception Take a trip to Kirstenbosch gardens and spend time appreciating the different scented plants or switch on to your sense of smell by noticing the smells around you, the smell of paper, of a passageway, the upholstery in a car or bottles of aromatherapy oils.

MAKE IT YOURSELF

I truly believe in keeping our home environment as natural as possible. Every Thursday morning (8h00 to 8h30am) on SABC3’s Expresso Breakfast show, I demonstrate natural, nontoxic DIY recipes for home, beauty and lifestyle. It is lots of fun making up the recipes. Include your kids in the process for a great family time together and a way to pass on your knowledge to the next generation. Of course there are excellent natural cleaning products available at Wellness Warehouse stores, but for fun DIY at home, here is a recipe to get stuck into:

Eco Diva Natural Deodorant 1/3 cup Coconut oil (solid state) 1/4 cup Arrowroot powder 1/4 cup Baking Soda (aluminium-free) Lemongrass essential oil Tea tree essential oil

Mix the baking soda and arrowroot powder in a glass bowl. Add the Coconut oil (do not warm or melt it) and use a fork or pastry blender to thoroughly blend it into the dry ingredients. Add 5-10 drops of the essential oils and blend completely. Add more Coconut oil or Arrowroot powder/baking soda if needed until the texture is a similar consistency to commercial deodorant. Scoop the mixture into a small jar or container and store at room temperature. (Refrigeration may be required during summer months and warmer weather because the coconut oil will melt at 25 degrees Celsius.) To apply, use your fingers to scoop out a peasize amount of the deodorant and massage it into your armpits daily or as needed. Allow a minute or two for the deodorant to set before getting dressed.

Live with earth in MIND

Environmental educator David Orr brings a new awareness to the way we live.

Much of what has gone wrong with the world, he argues, is the result of inadequate and misdirected education that alienates us from life in the name of human domination. It causes students to worry about how to make a living before they know who they are. It overemphasizes success and careers; separates feeling from intellect and the practical from the theoretical. In essence, it deadens the sense of wonder for the created world. The crisis we face, Orr explains, is one of mind, perception, and values. We have an educational challenge to change the way we are oriented in the world. We need more ecological intelligence that draws out our affinity for life.

My trainer shares with me, as he helps me prepare: “These gloves smell of hard work.” This is the true expression of blood, sweat and tears. A boxing fitness class is a challenging hour that is a high intensity, full body workout, keeping you moving the whole time. The workouts are always different, always fun, and get results. It is outstanding cross training for any sport that relies on core strength, and the focus is on boxing technique, not actual fighting. However, boxing is not only about the physical. It is a sport of intelligence. One needs attention, balance and discipline. As well as improving fitness, boxing also focuses the mind, enhances psychological wellbeing and builds confidence.

KNOW YOUR A FROM YOUR B

"Certain chemicals used in sunscreens can cause free radical activity in the body"

UVA? UVB?

Many sunscreens only protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation and not against the more dangerous ultraviolet A (UVA). We can differentiate the two by thinking of UVA in terms of causing skin ageing and UVB in terms of causing the skin to burn. Without protection from the full ultraviolet spectrum we are at an increased risk of developing malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer. With a good dose of sunscreen we feel protected and tend to spend longer hours in the sun. This is a danger if the protection doesn’t include both UVA and UVB.

SCRUTINISE THE INGREDIENTS

SUNSCREEN ALERT

Sunscreen is a standard in any beach bag with every bit of summer advice recommending a good dose of it, but what exactly are we putting on our bodies?

did you know?

When research showed the link between high ultraviolet exposure (especially during childhood) and the risk of melanoma the World Health Organisation issued a recommendation for under 18’s to avoid sunbeds.

34

R

esearch shows, depending on the ingredients and protective factor, slathering on sunscreen could be damaging. We look at facts and cautions you should know.

5 TIPS FOR

SUN SAFETY & INGREDIENT GUIDE:

What to look for & what to look out for >

Selected items not available at all stores. Items not listed at a particular store can be ordered for you or bought online.

octocrylene? benxopenone? oxybenzone?

Some common sunscreen ingredients (like oxybenzone, benxopenone, octocrylene and octyl methoxycinnamate) have health risks attached and are potentially carcinogenic. Several ultraviolet filters used in sunscreens have an estrogenic effect on your body (this means a biological effect similar to the hormone estrogen). For women, the more of these residues present in your body, the more likely you are to develop endometriosis. Some of the chemicals in sunscreen when used in combination have a more potent estrogenic effect. Fragrance is another ingredient to look out for. When the word fragrance is seen under ingredients, even in ‘green’ or ‘natural’ products it can contain up to several hundred unlabeled ingredients, some of which are hormone disruptors and probable carcinogens according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Many of the chemicals are bad for the environment. Residues of ultraviolet filters can be detected in fish. Scientists report that only tiny amounts of biologically active chemicals could produce harmful changes in wildlife and particularly in amphibians. They are in the process of researching reasons for the alarming increase in reproductive defects in wildlife.

GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D

5 TIPS FOR

how much is SUN SAFETY enough? We all need Vitamin D yet if your sunscreen is blocking out your Vitamin D you could become deficient. A 2012 article in the British Journal of Dermatology revealed that “When the amount of sunscreen and protection factor (SPF) advised by the World Health Organization is used, Vitamin D production may be stopped entirely. Re-evaluation of sun protection strategies could be warranted.” Without using sunscreen, adequate amounts of Vitamin D can be made in an hour of sun exposure for dark skins and 10-15 minutes in light skins twice a week.

ENABLE THE SKINS NATURAL PROTECTANT

photoprotectant?

UVB protection can cause the skin to suppress the production of the natural photo-protectant, melanin. The lack of melanin leads to an increased risk of melanoma. Sunscreen chemicals that penetrate the skin can also cause free radicals or toxicity. Some sunscreens use Retinyl palmitate, a form of Vitamin A, which is under research for its possible ability to cause tumour growth. A European study found that, after sunscreen was applied three times a day for five days, skin had absorbed the chemicals and was itself resistant to UV light. The health effect of this has not been determined.

CAUTION READ THE INGREDIENT LIST ON YOUR SUNSCREEN. LEARN WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW THEY AFFECT YOUR BODY AND THE ENVIRONMENT. IF SOMETHING SOUNDS LIKE A CHEMICAL YOU DON'T WANT IN YOUR BODY, FIND AN ALTERNATIVE.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

1. Build up to longer sun exposure – your body will generate its own natural defense against the sun’s potential to damage skin. But before you get sunburned, move into the shade or add a hat and protective clothing. 2. Use a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, check the ingredients first and choose one without chemicals that damage the skin or the environment. 3. Never use indoor tanning beds with UV, they produce more UV than the sun. 4. Eat food that protects against cancer. While ultraviolet can generate ‘cancer contributing’ free radicals, food high in antioxidants, neutralize free radicals. These include green tea, vegetables and fruits. 5. A wholefood, plant based diet also slows skin ageing and wrinkles. Many of the fruits in season during summer melons, peaches, mangoes, grapes, plums, apricots and more will protect against sun damage.

INGREDIENT GUIDE

Look Out For: • Many chemical preservatives, emulsifiers, thickeners, stabilizers, and fragrances used in many conventional and ‘natural’ sunscreens have documented concerns as endocrine disrupters and carcinogens. Look For: • Natural Ingredients as found in nature and processed through physical, non-chemical means. • Certified Organic Ingredients grown without chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs, and processed without chemicals or other harmful ingredients. • Full ingredient disclosure including processes and additives, fragrances and flavours.

Keep your baby or toddler protected from the sun with UV protective swimsuits. Babies and toddlers' skin is thinner than adults with increased absorption. This means Ultraviolet radiation can penetrate more deeply. Ultraviolet radiation not only damages skin DNA and accelerates ageing, but can also trigger inflammation and suppress the immune system in the skin. Remember that UV radiation reflects off sand, water, cement, snow and even grass. On a bright cloudy day, significant sun damage can still occur.

Inhabit your BODY By Robyn Wilkinson

Without being aware of it, there are parts of our bodies we disown. The parts we don’t like, we disconnect from. Full body awareness and appreciation creates an energy flow that enhances the way you look and feel.

E

nergy is continually flowing through our bodies; it enlivens us and informs our presence. As living beings we are expressions and channels of energy that translate into creative life force. When we have unobstructed flow of energy through us we appear vibrant and attractive yet when it is obstructed or reduced, our personal presence is not as animated. If you dislike your belly because it isn’t as flat as you would like, you might subconsciously detach from it. This will alter the way you stand and obstruct the energy flow in your body. The same goes for thighs you feel are too fat or shins you think are too skinny. As media representation presents perfect bodies as a benchmark, our judgement of ourselves becomes based on unrealistic standards and we often feel unable to match up. Lifestyle consultant Maggie Lyon says, “The answer to living in peace with our bodies is through befriending and making every effort to truly inhabit them. In this inhabitation is where the healing happens, where we call our truces, and can finally free ourselves from the human pain we’ve endured as a by-product of having physical bodies to negotiate with.” You may have noticed an unbelievable presence and glow in people who are deeply connected and in touch with their bodies. This attractiveness has nothing to do with traditional beauty or specific features; it is a powerful force or aura that creates a beautiful energy. This is what happens when we love, accept and are in awe of our bodies.

"More than anything, I’ve grown intensely respectful of my body, and am continually mesmerized by its sheer power and willingness to call out, heal, triumph, and blossom through life’s curveballs." Maggie Lyon. 38

SEND ENERGY THROUGH YOUR BODY As you loosen and dissolve the physical and psychological knots that bind your body and mind, you are literally enlarging your capacity to channel the energy of life. Try the simple exercise of imagining a huge resource of energy in the heart of your body. Take this energy and move it down to your stomach, through your lungs, your abdomen, your internal organs and down through each leg paying particular attention to the parts you don’t like. Then move it from your heart through your arms into your neck and head covering every part of you, your eyebrows, ears and scalp. Notice whether you have a sense of taboo when you come to your sexuality. Consciously connect and visit every part of you. This will generate awareness in parts of your body you may not ever pay attention to.

ENLIVEN YOUR POSTURE If you have self esteem issues you may not walk as tall as you could. Breathe in and use your breath to expand and elongate your posture. Practise a new way of walking with a heightened and empowered posture. Rather than pulling in your tummy, relax it. See if you clench any of the muscles in your body, those are the parts you may be disconnecting from. Notice if you restrict your breathing, especially if you feel inhibited or ashamed of your body. Breathing more deeply will take you through those feelings and help you to discard them and leave judgement behind.

DECIDE TO LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY At least once a day thank your body for the amazing functions it performs for you. Choose to think about it in a positive way. Rather than focusing on what isn’t present, healing comes when we send appreciation to our bodies. Vow to listen to your body, treat it with respect and care in the way you move it, nourish it and provide restoration. If you are tempted to eat, drink of do something you regard as a treat, see if it is really a treat in terms of your body. The body is naturally joyful and allows you to have immense pleasurable experiences.

MOVE EVERY PART OF YOUR BODY People who exercise a lot or do yoga or Tai Chi are generally more in touch with their bodies and have an easy and natural way of being in their bodies. Health seems to emanate from them. Movement is an important part of feeling and knowing your body. Some people never experience the full range of movement in their bodies. See if putting your hands behind your back or up in the air or bending your leg or twisting your torso is unfamiliar. Use movement to get to know your body better. Take yoga, Tai Chi, dance or Pilates classes.

LISTEN TO THE CUES See how responsive your body is. Throughout the day, the body will send you cues as to what it needs and wants. Pay attention to the messages from your body, it has innate intelligence and is remarkably communicative. Your body will automatically yawn when you need more oxygen, it will get pins and needles if it needs more circulation, will call for food when hungry. Keep up a good and responsive conversation with it. Being more in tune and compassionate will create better health and more radiance.

did you know?

Your skin replaces itself once a month, your stomach lining every five days, your liver every six weeks and your skeleton every three months. Your body is extraordinary.

FABULOUS FATTY

We are conditioned to shake in terror at the word ‘fat’, but that shouldn’t always be the case.

F

atty acids (which may sound even worse than mere fat) are actually essential for your body to function optimally. What you eat affects the brain’s chemicals that influence your behaviour and your mood. Your brain’s neurons have membranes composed of a thin double layer of fatty acid molecules. When food is digested, it’s broken down into fatty acid molecules, which your brain uses to create the specialised fats it needs for cell membranes.

HOW ESSENTIAL WHEN YOU HEAR THE TERM ESSENTIAL, IT MEANS YOUR BODY NEEDS IT, BUT CAN’T CREATE IT – SO YOU NEED TO GET THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENT FROM YOUR FOOD.

Two essential fatty acids > 42

TWO FATTIES Two essential fatty acids: • Alpha-linolenic acid (Omega-3) available from from flax seed, walnuts, green leafy veg, and cold water fish. •

Linoleic acid (Omega-6) found in cold pressed sunflower, corn and sesame oils.

From these two essential fatty acids, your brain makes dicosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA). A depletion of DHA has been definitively linked to depression. A loss of fatty acids in the brain has also been linked to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. An imbalance of fatty acid in the brain has been linked to mental disorders like bipolar and schizophrenia. Although you need to have both saturated and unsaturated fats, most people eat far too much saturated fat. This blocks the cells ability to properly absorb nutrients. Balancing the right types of fat you eat can have a significant effect on how your brain and body functions – so, include fat in your diet, but be careful of eating the right type of fat. everything you need to live life well

Using Organic Products

Yesterday I tried out the Dr. Hauschka facial at the Wellspa in Gardens. I still haven’t recovered. It was a deeply relaxing experience that melted away layers of stress. I literally staggered out of there feeling like I had been on an island holiday in paradise. Minette, the resident practitioner has a following of satisfied clients that keep coming back for her special blend of therapeutic bliss. She is a highly qualified and experienced therapist that, besides knowing her stuff, has the magic touch.

TRY IT OUT - DR HAUSCHKA FACIAL Dr Hauschka has a fairly different approach to many of the other cosmetic blends. There was no steaming or extraction but rhythmic massage and face brushing was used to stimulate detoxification. Warm towels and compresses using different herbal treatments are applied leaving an ultra glowing and cleansed result both stimulated from outside and inside. The entire process is incredibly relaxing and I could definitely feel its harmonising balance throughout my body.
