ANCIENT WISDOM,
MODERN HEALING
ANCIENT WISDOM,
MODERN HEALING
I’ve absolutely loved working on the Wellness Magazine since I started writing for the publication back in 2016.
However, a few editions ago, I started to feel like a fraud. I was preaching (and practising!) wellness, but feeling unwell.
I quit sugar, gluten and dairy; sipped on broth all day; and took the best probiotics on the market, but my tummy was still always sore.
I was serious about supplements and self-care, but caught every little bug that did the rounds. I was getting my eight hours of sleep; drinking my matcha; and taking my adaptogens, yet I always felt tired.
Finally, I called in the big guns. A specialist visit, blood test, stool test, colonoscopy, CT scan and MRI later, and I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer two weeks after my 35th birthday. It’s an uncommon diagnosis for a woman my age, and my first instinct was to write off all my healthy efforts as a waste of time. Until more details started coming to the fore.
My tumour was pretty big, and had likely been growing for years. Which means that I’d been working full days, exercising regularly, maintaining an active social life and going on plenty of adventures in spite of itfor some time. I was also incredibly lucky in that it hadn’t metastasised to anywhere else in my body.
The fact that I’ve been taking as much care of myself as possible (in light of the circumstances) also saw me undergoing a total mesorectal excision without experiencing any of the serious complications that often accompany this significant surgery.
The full tumour, most of my rectum and part of my colon were removed, and I didn’t even have to use a temporary stoma bag. It is advised that people take six weeks off after the surgery, but I was back at work (online) one week later, and at the gym again (walking slowly on the treadmill) after just two weeks.
My healthy habits weren’t a waste of time because I ended up getting cancer. My healthy habits could very well have been part of what ended up helping my incredible medical team (shout-out to Drs Badenhorst & Forgan at Christiaan Barnard) to save my life in the face of the cancer I happened to get.
I am so grateful for my Wellness family and the work we do in inspiring not only our customers - but also ourselves - to practise holistic wellbeing every day. I hope that our beautiful spring edition encourages you to do the same!

While I get excited about every new Wellness own-brand launch, I’m particularly thrilled to have gotten my paws on the newly packaged lineup of organic, non-GMO Wellness Superfoods filled with responsibly sourced ingredients and general goodness! As is the Wellness way, they are free from added sugars and artificial ingredients, and housed in sustainable packaging. The comprehensive collection includes antioxidants, adaptogens, vegan protein, digestive support and – my favourite – sweet superfoods.
After the removal of my tumour, I have added complementary care to my allopathic oncology treatment. The very first supplement recommended by every member of my integrative support team? Curcumin. My particular journey requires high doses daily, and I’m so grateful to the team at Natroceutics for their generous support in the form of Curcumin Complete – a BCM-95™ and whole organic turmeric extract that delivers over 700% more bioactive curcumin. The benefits of a curcumin of this calibre are too plentiful to expound on here, but I can highly recommend a deep dive into the research if you, too, are in need of some extra support at this stage of your health journey.
While I’m banging on about my new favourite ingredient, another great supplement to try is Flora Force’s Turmerynne . The herbal capsules contain turmeric root powder and cayenne fruit powder for antioxidant and antiinflammatory support, with black pepper to enhance the absorption of turmeric’s bio-actives. Importantly, they comprise the true herb, dried and powdered, rather than standardised extracts or concentrations of single biochemicals extracted from the herbs.
Every challenging period calls on us to practise some extra selflove! I’ve been scrub-a-dubbin’ with Simply Bee ’s gorgeous Body Scrub with rich honey, nourishing olive oil, and soothing lavender. After this shower time indulgence, I proceed to slather and lather their creamy Body Butter , with its non-greasy formula of softening propolis and beeswax, all over my thoroughly pampered bod.
From the original oat drinks company comes an exclusive range of totally plant-based, totally delicious oaty goodness. I’ve become quite obsessed with the Oatly Chocolate Oat Drink (it’s just like your favourite chocolate-flavoured milk, except healthier!). For daily drinking, their Organic Oat Drink is made from just organic oats and a touch of sea salt – that’s it! Last but by no means least, their Barista Edition is a fully foamable, vegan-friendly alternative for adding some delectable creaminess to tea, coffee, or even just cereal.
Another great source of support on my cancer recovery and prevention journey has been the passionate minds behind Phytoceutics . Two other supplements at the top of my support list are Origine 8 (a complete green tea extract that delivers all 8 green tea catechins in a single daily dose), and Bio-Sulforaphane (a potent Nrf2 activator). If these descriptors sound as confounding to you as they did to me in the beginning, I can – again – suggest immersing yourself in the (impressive) research on the powerful allies in complementary health support.
On my (recently reinvigorated) journey to cutting the chemicals from my personal care, I’ve finally had to stop resisting parting from my beloved (but oh-so-unnatural) hair products. Luckily, it didn’t take too long to find a range that is both gentle and effective. With 70% certified organic components, 100% plant-based ingredients and zero sulphites, Biobodi harnesses the power of omega-rich seed oils and soothing plant essences for care that’s as clean as it is cleansing. Currently occupying pride of place in my shower are their colourfully packaged Shampoo and Conditioner , with their equally delightful Body Wash , Body Lotion and Hand Wash brightening my bathroom… and day.
Want to up your omegas but dedicated to a plant-powered lifestyle? Omega Pure from All Green is a great solution providing a concentrated dose of plant-based DHA derived from sustainably sourced algae. Chief among the many important roles of omega-3 fatty acids are the support of brain function, vision health, and cardiovascular function. Rest assured that you can now cover all your bases, the vegan way!
It goes without saying that my gut health is currently front and centre of my daily experience. To help me along the way, I add a scoop of Metagenics GI Sustain to my morning smoothies. Designed to provide gastrointestinal support, the formula helps to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria by including prebiotic nutrients, combined with readily digestible macronutrients – all in a convenient, neutral tasting powder that blends well with just about anything. Add to this the PhytoMulti –with its proprietary blend of 13 concentrated extracts and phytonutrients – and the D3 Liquid (providing 1000 IU of vitamin D3 per drop, solubilised in oil to support absorption in the intestinal tract), and Metagenics really has me covered!
One supplement that has remained a staple throughout my wellness journey is vitamin D. I recently got to try the DLux 1000 from Better You , and I’m hooked! The convenient oral spray packs a 1000 IU punch in every spray, and it tastes great, too! While I turn to vitamin D primarily for immune support, it can also support the health of bones, teeth, and muscles, to name just a few of its many potential benefits.
Supporting my mental health has been an integral part of my life-altering journey this year. I’ve always been interested in the principles of ancient holistic healthcare, and am grateful to be able to explore Tibb ’s approach to Graeco-Arab, Unani, and Western Herbal Medicine. Most helpful to me right now are their Stress-away Tablets and Syrup , with their multi-ingredient formulation of bacopa monnieri, valerian, ashwagandha, and gotu kola, to name just a few of the soothing superstars.
The Neroli & Orange Blossom Refillable Deodorant Spray from Salt of the Earth is winner of the Best New Vegan Beauty Product in the 2023 Natural & Organic Innovation Awards, and winner of best natural deodorant in my personal care regime! It’s taken me some time to find a chemical-free alternative that really works, and this one is not only effective, but also gorgeously scented.

Spring is the archetypical time for new beginnings. It is an invitation to start off nature’s next cycle in the right spirit. In South Africa, it’s also when we head into the most social period in our collective calendar, so we’re reconnecting with the world in more ways than one. Our natural mode is high energy and celebratory, and we’re here to guide you through this busy season. Over these three months we’ll be sharing plenty of ways to build up your innate resilience so it can serve you well - not just for spring, but for the whole of the upcoming year on your journey to wellness.
The connection between our physical and mental wellbeing is well established by now. So this month we want to help support both. In October, we’re exploring the ways you can boost your mood and beat stress, all with a little help from nature.
Men have specific needs when it comes to their wellbeing, and in November we’ll be focusing on them. As we get closer to the end of the year, we’ll also be sharing some ways to celebrate well as we head into the start of the festive season.
Enjoying yourself is an important part of life. It’s just a good idea to support your body’s needs as you do so. In December we're looking at ways to celebrate mindfully, and how we can share the gift of wellness with our loved ones, too.
Spring brings with it the promise of new beginnings and regeneration as the sun starts to warm us once again. This season embodies nature's resilience and acts as a call for us to embrace change in our own lives. Just as flowers bloom after the winter frost, so may we - with renewed vigour and spirit.
In South Africa, spring is also a time of social connection and celebration, as we gather to appreciate the beauty of life. At Wellness Warehouse, this season is also one of renewal for us behind the scenes, with our new-andimproved ERP system, relocated support office, new store openings and revamps all breathing new life into our business.
Our purpose has always been to provide you with the tools and inspiration to care for your holistic well-being, whether it be through our rigorously tested, high-quality products or our personalised services. In this edition, I am moved and inspired by the courage of our colleague Lara (our editor) in sharing such personal detail regarding her journey and what living a holistic lifestyle and Wellness Warehouse mean to her. Stories like hers, as well as countless others, reaffirm our commitment to empowering you, and underscore our mission daily.
I encourage you to explore this edition of our magazine and our offering in stores, as our monthly themes are woven together to prepare you for a final and busy quarter full of energy and well-being as we approach the end of another eventful year:
· Cultivating a resilient mind and body
· Discovering the vigour and vitality of men’s wellness
· Embracing the joy of living and giving well
We understand that life's responsibilities might be daunting at times, but we encourage you to keep in mind that your well-being is our priority. Let spring serve as a reminder to pause, reflect, and appreciate life's blessings, as well as to take action on your own wellness journey. Explore our magazine, visit our stores (we are in 52 locations, and counting!), or connect online - one of our team members will be waiting to assist you on your next step. Together, let's take heed of this new season, embrace new opportunities, and continue our journey towards a healthier and more joyful life.
We are honoured to walk this journey with you. Thank you for being a valued member of our community.

My journey towards wellness began in my childhood. My parents encouraged me to play sports, engaging in various activities such as running in the street and backyard, practising throwing and catching stones and balls, and playing cricket and soccer with my father. As a child, I didn’t eat much, and I was skinny, which raised concerns about malnutrition. However, the doctors assured us that there was no need to worry and that I was perfectly healthy.
Unfortunately, my parents’ frequent arguments took a toll on my selfesteem and confidence. Their divorce when I was 11 years old was a difficult period. To cope with the emotional challenges, I immersed myself in multiple sports throughout school. This kept me physically active and helped improve my mental well-being, which eventually led me to study sports science and biokinetics at the University of the Western Cape. Today, I work as a Biokineticist at the Sports
Whenever I caught myself complaining, I consciously cancelled the negative thought and focused on finding the silver lining in the situation. With practice, I began to adopt a more positive outlook in most situations, leading to increased happiness, joy, and inner peace. This was the moment I discovered the power to change my mindset and began my journey of observing and shaping my thoughts.
Now, I meditate daily, observing my mind and its thought patterns, gaining valuable insights into my mental well-being. This practice has not only positively influenced my life, but also the lives of those around me. People often describe me as a calming presence and seek my advice on mental health matters. I inspire them to explore these practices, take control of their mental well-being, and embrace a more harmonious and joyfilled life.
My journey with yoga started with some reluctance towards stretching. As a competitive participant in lifesaving championships across South Africa and Australia, I never paid much attention to yoga. However, during a level 5 lockdown, I decided to explore stretching. Surprisingly, I discovered a deep connection with my body’s soft tissue, and this newfound appreciation for stretching led me to pursue a Yoga Teacher Training course through Jim Harrington’s ReUnion Yoga.
Now, I teach at ReUnion Yoga and present their Yoga Teacher Training, focusing on anatomy and physiology for future yoga teachers. Additionally, I teach yoga and mobility at the Sports Science Institute.
Furthermore, I recognised the immense benefits of massage in providing instant pain relief to those in need. This inspiration led me to complete a sports massage course, followed by a fascia and trauma release course. Combining my knowledge of biokinetics with massage therapy allows me to directly impact people’s bodies through handson healing.
I now see that wellness is not the destination - it is the journey. The decision you make to no longer live maladaptively and to carefully choose the practices you make use of is wellness. It is a lifestyle. Every moment is an opportunity to choose your wellness. I now know what is in my best interest. I choose me. I choose my well-being.

One significant turning point on my path to wellness was realising the importance of mental health. During my gap year, while living and working in Dubai as a lifeguard for a hotel chain and water park, I noticed a shift towards negativity in my thoughts. I recalled my mother’s advice: “If you have a negative thought, replace it with a positive one.” So, that’s exactly what I did.
Sodium, commonly found in table salt, is an essential mineral that plays a vital role in maintaining proper fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions. However, excessive sodium intake has been linked to high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease. As a wellness trend, people are now focusing on moderating their sodium levels and paying closer attention to the hidden sodium content in processed foods. By adopting a more conscious approach to sodium intake, individuals can promote heart health and overall well-being.
In addition to vegan collagen alternatives, collagen spreads made from animal sources are also making waves in the wellness community. These spreads, often combined with other nutritious ingredients like nuts and seeds, aim to provide collagen's skin-rejuvenating benefits in a convenient and delicious form.
VEGAN COLLAGEN: A PLANT-BASED BEAUTY BOOSTER
NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a molecule that plays a key role in cellular energy production and repair processes. As we age, NAD+ levels naturally decline, which is believed to contribute to ageing and agerelated conditions. NAD+ supplements are gaining traction as a potential anti-ageing intervention, with some studies suggesting they may help boost energy levels, enhance metabolism, and support overall health.
Collagen, a protein crucial for skin elasticity and joint health, has traditionally been sourced from animals. However, with the rise of veganism and environmental consciousness, vegan collagen has emerged as a popular trend. Plantbased collagen alternatives, often derived from sources like seaweed or specific plant peptides, are believed to promote youthful skin and joint flexibility without the need for animal-derived products.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a powerful antioxidant found in green tea, renowned for its potential anti-ageing properties. EGCG is thought to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and support longevity. As a wellness trend, green tea consumption has surged, with some individuals incorporating it into their daily routine for its potential health benefits.
Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouses of cells, responsible for producing cellular energy (ATP). Maintaining mitochondrial health is crucial for overall vitality and longevity. To support mitochondrial function, people are turning to lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, stress management, and diets rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients.
Seed spreads, such as pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, and hemp seed spreads, are gaining popularity as nutritious alternatives to traditional nut spreads. Packed with healthy fats, protein, and essential vitamins, seed spreads offer a variety of health benefits, including supporting heart health and providing a sustainable protein source for vegans and vegetarians.
Nootropics are substances that enhance cognitive function, and nootropic foods are natural ingredients believed to offer brainboosting benefits. Foods like blueberries, turmeric, and fatty fish are gaining popularity for their potential to improve memory, focus, and mental clarity. Nootropic foods can be easily incorporated into the diet to provide a natural and delicious way to support brain health.
As the demand for dairy-free milk alternatives continues to grow, buckwheat and chia mylk have emerged as two exciting options. Buckwheat is rich in nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins, while chia offers a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. These plant-based mylks cater to those with lactose intolerance, or those seeking more sustainable and environmentally friendly choices.
Refillable beauty with ‘airless’ technology is a groundbreaking approach to skincare that includes advanced dispensing systems that protect moisturisers from exposure to air and light, thanks to the airtight mechanism of the pump. By ensuring that no air enters the pack, actives are shielded from oxidation, preserving their efficacy and delivering more stable and effective results. We’re loving the new SKOON. ‘Airless’ moisturiser packaging system, which also offers more precise dosage control.

By now, we generally have a good idea of just how important digestive health is for our overall well-being.
But did you know that adding fibre-rich superfoods like baobab can go a long way in supporting your gut health?
Almond, soy, oat, and coconut are already well-known and beloved dairy alternatives, but did you know that you can also enjoy chia mylk as a dairy alternative?
Chia seeds come from the Salvia hispanica plant, a member of the mint family. These tiny seeds were cultivated by the Aztecs and Mayans in ancient times and have remained integral to Central and South American diets for centuries.
Today, chia seeds have earned welldeserved global attention due to their impressive nutritional profile and culinary versatility.
Though small in size, chia seeds are an excellent source of fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, each offering a wide array of health benefits.
Their rich dietary fibre content can help promote healthy digestion and aid in maintaining regular bowel movements. The omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alphalinolenic acid (ALA), contribute to heart health by reducing inflammation, lowering blood pressure, and improving cholesterol levels.
Chia seeds also help to regulate blood sugar levels by absorbing liquid and forming a gel-like consistency, slowing down digestion. Additionally, incorporating chia into your diet may be beneficial for weight management, as the combination of fibre, protein, and healthy fats promotes satiety and curbs cravings.
Chia means 'strength,' and it was believed that they imparted vigour and stamina to those who consumed them.
With all these nutritional benefits, using chia as a dairy alternative is a no-brainer!
Chia mylk is a simple and nutritious dairy alternative that can be easily prepared at home. Here's a basic recipe:
Ingredients
• 5 C water, divided
• ¼ C chia seeds
• 2 TBSP walnuts
• 2 TBSP sesame tahini
• 1 tsp honey, or to taste
• 1 dash vanilla extract (optional)
Method
1. Combine 3 cups of the water with the chia seeds and walnuts in a bowl (stir to prevent clumps from forming)
2. Let soak for 8 hours to overnight
3. Pour the chia seed mixture into a blender, along with 1 cup of the water, the tahini, the honey, and the vanilla extract
4. Cover and blend until smooth, adding the remaining water as needed
The fun thing about chia mylk is that it can be customised and incorporated into a variety of recipes to create something delicious and nutritious. Here's a must-try Strawberry Chia Parfait recipe to try this summer…
Ingredients
• 4 TBSP chia seeds
• 1 C homemade chia mylk
• A handful of strawberries, cut into bite-sized pieces
• Nuts, oats, coconut shavings, or granola for toppings
• Optional: Sweetener of choice (e.g., honey or agave syrup)
Method
1. In a bowl, combine the chia seeds and chia mylk. Stir well.
2. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent clumping.
3. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight, allowing the chia seeds to absorb.
4. Once your chia mylk has been fully absorbed by the additional chia seeds, you can begin building your parfait.
5. Scoop a layer of your chia seed mix into a glass, and top with your strawberry bits and your choice of toppings.
6. Repeat this process until you reach the top of the glass.
7. Sprinkle with any extra toppings and enjoy!
Serves: 2
1 cup diced fresh mango, plus extra to serve
1 TBSP lime or lemon juice
1 can coconut milk or plant-based milk
1 TBSP maple syrup or honey
3 TBSP chia seeds
TO SERVE (OPTIONAL):
¼ cup passionfruit pulp + toasted coconut shavings + small handful chopped roasted nuts + pretty, edible flowers or baby mint leaves
1. Add the mango and lime or lemon juice to a glass jug and mash roughly with a fork. Divide the mixture between 2 pretty serving glasses (or glass jars with lids for on the go).
2. In the same jug, mix together the coconut milk, maple syrup or honey and chia seeds. Leave the mixture to stand for a few minutes, then divide equally between the 2 serving glasses.
3. Refrigerate overnight, or for up to 2 days, adding the toppings just before serving.

The word macrobiotics is derived from the Greek makros (long) and bios (life). Macrobiotics is concerned not only with living a long life, but with living a great life A life of well-being, fulfilment, and fortitude. The macrobiotic study of longevity encompasses a great or expansive view of the world, and of diet.
In Macrobiotics, diet is considered from an ideological and energetic - rather than solely nutritional - perspective. Intuition is upheld over knowledge. George Ohsawa, considered to be the founder of modern Macrobiotics, spoke of reinvigorating an ancient wisdom about health, disease, and healing. This age-old common sense is ingrained in us and has simply been lost or forgotten. The natural world contains everything we need to survive; we must just choose judiciously.
We naturally seek to adapt to and make balance with our environment because we are of our environment.
Dietary staples include whole grains, legumes, and land and sea vegetables suitable to one’s environment, with other supplementary foods such as fruit, nuts, and fish, depending on an individual’s climate, condition, and activity. These foods are said to be more centrally balanced in their composition and thus have a more moderate and balancing effect on the body.
Whole foods nourish our whole being and support holistic consciousness. Macrobiotics is more than merely a diet; it is the way of health and harmony.
Food is the natural world that is transmuted through our bodies to give us life. In Macrobiotics, food is handled with respect and integrity and prepared calmly, lovingly, and with gratitude.
Carla Chait is a dietitian practising Macrobiotics in Johannesburg. For more information or to get in touch, visit www.macrobioticeating.co.za.
The Macrobiotic dietary approach outlines a whole food, plant-based diet based on traditional and cultural ways of eating.
When we are aligned more fully with the natural world, eating foods that originate in our climate and that are calming and restorative to the body, our true nature is supported and can blossom.

Beauty is both internal and external, and what’s happening on the inside is often reflected on the outside. There are many factors that contribute to the beauty of your skin, hair, nails, and overall appearance, and these are largely dictated by levels of inflammation and oxidation; your digestive, endocrine, immune and detoxification systems; and of course your lifestyle and skincare routine. Reversatrol™ (note the play on words) contains resveratrol (a polyphenol known for its cardiovascular, blood sugar, and longevity-supporting benefits) is the hero of this range, and promises not to disappoint. Using innovative technology to ensure it is 10x more bioavailable than most conventional resveratrol supplements, this product overcomes the shortfall of poor absorption.

"We are as committed as ever to building and growing a portfolio of leading nutraceutical products and brands that our consumers can trust from both a quality and ethical perspective. We believe that knowledge is power and therefore strive to educate, inspire, and enable consumers to make conscious health choices,” she shares.
Bettergut™ is complimentary to Ceregut™ as it generates butyrate, which helps beneficial gut bacteria to flourish, nourishes the gut-lining (hugely beneficial for people suffering from leaky gut, allergies and intolerances), and modulates gut-brain and other gut-organ interactions for overall well-being. Both of these products encourage improvements in digestive health, and can lead to less bloating and more regular bowel movements. Another area Phytoceutics™ is focusing on is beauty from within.
We sit down with Christine Stevens, edible gardens expert and Leeu Locally Grown Team Manager at Leeu Collection in Franschhoek, for some farm-to-fork insider insight…
WM: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you became involved in horticulture?
CS: I grew up on a small holding in rural England, so was brought up in an environment that was conducive to gardening and growing one’s own food.
WM: What inspired you to start the Leeu Locally Grown initiative at Leeu Estates?
CS: I was approached by the Leeu Collection as they wanted to create a farm-to-table initiative to service their hotels and restaurants. Through the project, I help them to ensure that their restaurants have the best fresh, organic, and seasonal ingredients at their disposal. Fresh is best.
WM: What will you be harvesting this summer?
CS: We work very closely with the chefs to ensure that we fit into their menu plans. We always grow lots of fresh herbs, salad leaves, courgettes, and heirloom tomatoes. Chefs always love using courgette flowers, as they are almost impossible to buy in the shops.
WM: Could you share some of your favourite dishes using fresh, summer produce?
CS: So many to choose from! A favourite from last summer was a plum, tomato, herb, and burrito salad, which was served in the hotel at Leeu Estates, and made from ingredients grown by us on the farm. We have delicious plums growing in the orchards, which the chefs love.
WM: Do you perhaps have a summer recipe of your own to share with readers?
CS: I love making fresh pesto and salsa verde to season and elevate any dish. I often make a herb pesto from nasturtium, coriander, and almonds. If I work late, I also use it as a quick pasta sauce with some added pecorino.
250 g mixed nasturtium and coriander leaves
30 g almonds
1 garlic clove
Zest of half a lemon
300 ml olive oil
1. Grind the almonds, garlic, and herbs in a Nutribullet or blender.
2. Add the lemon zest and olive oil.
It keeps in a jar for a week, so it’s something I always have in my kitchen.
WM: Why is it important to grow (and eat) local, seasonal, and organic produce?
CM: I think it is becoming obvious that for a healthy functioning body, we need to eat seasonal, fresh, and unprocessed ingredients. Freshly grown vegetables also contain more nutrients. As Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.
WM: Can you share any interesting or unexpected challenges you've faced while building and maintaining your organic gardens?
CS: Patience is always required. You cannot fool Mother Nature - she always wins. Work with nature, not against it.
WM: What advice would you give to someone who is interested in starting their own organic garden, whether at home or on a larger scale?
CS: Everything starts with healthy soil, so invest in good compost – it’s worth it. At Leeu Estates, we grow on large, raised beds, which help to keep weeds under control and assist with good drainage in winter. Heathy soil means healthy vegetables. Always write a list of what you like to eat, and plant according to that list to ensure that you use what you grow.

In our quest for a longer and healthier life, science has uncovered a treasure trove of natural ingredients that many are turning to as key to longevity. Among these noteworthy compounds are NAC (N-acetyl cysteine), glutathione, NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), and NMN (Nicotinamide mononucleotide). These substances, found in various foods and supplements, offer a promising avenue for enhancing our well-being and extending our years. Let's delve into the fascinating world of these natural ingredients and their potential to unlock the secrets of longevity…
NAC, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, is celebrated for its potent antioxidant properties and its role in cellular detoxification. By boosting the body's production of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, NAC helps neutralise the harmful free radicals that contribute to ageing and disease. Furthermore, NAC aids in the elimination of toxins, promoting optimal cellular function and reducing the risk of chronic illnesses.
Studies have shown that NAC supplementation may play a pivotal role in promoting heart health, respiratory function, and cognitive well-being. Its ability to support the body's natural defence mechanisms makes NAC a formidable ally in the pursuit of longevity.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamine, and glycine. This remarkable molecule is the body's primary defence against oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which contribute to ageing and age-related diseases. Maintaining optimal glutathione levels is essential for cellular health and longevity. As we age, our bodies may experience a decline in glutathione production, making supplementation a valuable strategy for maintaining balance. Glutathione not only helps to neutralise free radicals, but also to support the immune system, detoxify the liver, and aid in DNA repair - key factors in the quest for a longer, healthier life.
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD, is a coenzyme that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism and cellular function. As we age, NAD levels naturally decline, leading to reduced energy production and an increased susceptibility to age-related diseases. NAD is integral to the function of sirtuins, a class of proteins that regulate various biological processes, including DNA repair, inflammation, and cellular ageing. Supplementing with NAD precursors, such as nicotinamide riboside (NR) or NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), has gained significant attention for its potential to support longevity. By replenishing NAD levels, these compounds may enhance mitochondrial function, improve cellular repair mechanisms, and boost overall vitality. Preliminary studies in animal models have shown promising results, sparking excitement about the potential of NAD supplementation in humans.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a novel compound that has emerged as a potential breakthrough in the field of longevity research. This compound is a derivative of NMN, a precursor to NAD. What sets NMN apart is its ability to influence epigenetic modifications, which play a pivotal role in gene expression and ageing.
Epigenetic changes are reversible alterations that impact how our genes are turned on or off, influencing cellular function and longevity. NMN has shown promise in reprogramming epigenetic patterns, potentially slowing down the ageing process and reducing the risk of age-related diseases.
As we continue to explore the frontiers of longevity, natural ingredients like NAC, glutathione, NAD, and NMN hold tremendous potential for enhancing our well-being and extending our years. These compounds, found in various foods and supplements, offer a multifaceted approach to promoting cellular health, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting vital biological processes. While research into their longevity-promoting effects is ongoing, the preliminary findings are promising and provide hope for a future where we can harness the power of nature to unlock the secrets of a longer, healthier life. Remember, before incorporating any new supplements into your routine, that it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that they are appropriate for your individual needs and health status.
Before July 9, 2019 (the day I embarked on my transformation journey), I had been considering a return to the gym, but I dreaded the challenge of getting back into shape. That morning, however, I made a pivotal decision - I decided to take a simple step and go for a walk. The hour-long walk felt amazing, as it allowed me to reconnect with my body. The very next day, I pushed myself to cycle for 30 minutes, and though it was tough, that moment marked the beginning of a significant change. From then on, there was no looking back. I set my goals and developed personalised fitness programmes for myself.
Prior to this transformative phase, I had faced bullying and ridicule due to my weight while playing rugby as a prop. After leaving the rugby scene, I realised the toll that my weight had taken on my health and lifestyle. By mid-2019, I had gained even more weight due to unhealthy habits like overeating, excessive drinking, and smoking.
This approach yielded remarkable results. I later adopted a plant-based diet for a year and a half, incorporating plenty of vegetables and sprouts to ensure essential nutrient intake. Now, I strike a balance between the two dietary approaches, making sure that I get all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Additionally, I allow myself occasional indulgences in cheat meals like chocolate mousse or cheesecake, as I believe that it's essential to enjoy the journey while learning and growing.
However, since then, I am proud to share that I have achieved a remarkable feat - losing 34 kg and reshaping not only my body, but also my entire outlook and career. I even established an award-winning fitness brand called YNOT, which is dedicated to bringing innovation and enjoyment to the fitness scene in South Africa.
Staying motivated and inspired is crucial for me. I hold a clear vision of the version of myself I aspire to become, and I won't stop until I achieve it. I draw inspiration from motivational videos, quotes, and the strength I've gained from conquering past challenges. The unwavering support of my immediate family and the people I meet on my journey plays a significant role in keeping me grounded and motivated. Encouraging messages I receive from strangers on Instagram also serve as a powerful driving force. This support system is a constant reminder of what truly matters - the people in our lives. During the highs and lows, they stand by us, providing a sense of calm amidst the chaos that can accompany an entrepreneurial journey. When facing difficult decisions, their advice holds great weight, and I trust in their counsel.
My journey of transformation has been a life-changing experience, and I'm continually motivated to become the best possible version of myself. I've learned to strike a balance in my nutrition, embrace occasional indulgences, and draw strength from a supportive community. With each step forward, I feel a growing sense of purpose and fulfilment.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) , also known as ubiquinone or ubiquinol, is a naturally occurring enzyme found in almost every cell in the body, with high concentrations in some of the hardest working organs like the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas.
It helps cells convert food into energy, and is an essential nutrient for the body to perform optimally as cells rely heavily on energy to function.
CoQ10 may also play a significant role in boosting the immune system and physical performance as it forms a crucial part of cellular energy metabolism.
It is naturally produced by the body, however there are a few food sources rich in this nutrient, such as fruits, green leafy vegetables, fatty fish (salmon and tuna), organ meats (liver and kidney), eggs, legumes, nuts and seeds.
Most people do not get enough CoQ10 from their diets alone , and the ability of the cells to produce energy declines with age, reducing CoQ10 levelswhich could lead to oxidative stress and cell damage. Those who have a deficiency also often experience fatigue and muscle weakness.
However, it’s important to choose high-quality supplements with proven bioavailability to ensure safety, efficacy and optimal benefits.
Co-Enzyme Q10 Advanced utilises a first-of-its-kind phytosomal delivery technology called Ubiqsome™, which is scientifically proven through human studies to significantly enhance the absorption of CoQ10 in the body and increase levels within the cells.
Studies conducted on Ubiqsome™ found:
It also functions as a powerful antioxidant that protects cells and tissues from oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which could lead to inflammation , accelerated ageing and the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. This makes CoQ10 a potentially helpful substance for promoting overall health.
Various studies have shown the health benefits of CoQ10 for improving heart health , fertility , exercise performance and supporting healthy skin and teeth . Research has also shown its benefits in reducing migraines , lowering blood pressure , balancing blood sugar levels and having a positive influence on the expression of genes related to ageing and age-related diseases
What’re more, further research has shown that CoQ10 may help protect against and reduce the risk of developing neurodegenerative conditions Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.
CoQ10 has been found to be lower in people with health conditions such as heart disease, obesity or cancer, lifestyle habits such as smoking, and those taking medications such as statins, used to control cholesterol.
Testing for deficiency can be difficult, as blood levels may not always accurately reflect the amount of CoQ10 in tissues and cells. Results may show normal or even high levels in the blood, but deficiency may still occur in the muscles and immune cells.
• A 36% increase in CoQ10 concentration in muscle tissue after 30 days, delivered into the cells and not only the bloodstream.
• Improved oral absorption by threefold after a single dose, making it three times more bioavailable than standard CoQ10.
• Reduced inflammatory markers within 30 days.
• A 64% increase in antioxidant capacity and a 26% reduction in oxidative stress.
• Improved endothelial reactivity (a function of the lining of the blood vessels and an important marker for cardiovascular risk) by 7% two hours after a single dose.
Co-Enzyme Q10 is 100% natural and shown to support mitochondrial function, heart health, fertility, exercise performance, energy production and healthy ageing while promoting the wellbeing and balance of the body.
CoQ10 supports and protects the mitochondria, which are the powerhouses within cells that produce cellular energy.
Supplementing with CoQ10 is safe and shown to improve mitochondrial function, antioxidant defences, longevity and reduce the risk of age-

In the intricate symphony of the human body, the gastrointestinal system takes on the roles of both conductor and enthusiastic audience. The importance of a properly functioning gut extends beyond its digestive duties; it profoundly impacts our physical equilibrium and even influences our mental health. Conversely, a disrupted gut can send waves of discord throughout the body. From nagging discomfort to mood fluctuations and energy slumps, an unhappy gut resembles a dissonant note within the harmony of overall well-being.
In our modern lives, with their tantalising processed temptations, it can be easy to veer off course. With culinary convenience reigning supreme, an influx of refined sugars and lessthan-friendly fats creates a bumpy journey for our digestive systems. As the whirlwind of life's demands surrounds us, stress enters uninvited, directly interfering with the rhythm and sensitivity of our guts.
Unsaturated fats are helpful in facilitating the assimilation of vitamins into the body, as well as in collaborating with fibre to keep you regular.
Olive oil and its counterparts from the plant-based oil brigade are esteemed guests in the realm of unsaturated fats. However, remember that moderation is the watchword here. If you're an adult following a 2 000-calorie regimen each day, ensure that your fat intake does not exceed 77 grams.
In the realm of microbiota, the symbiotic relationship between probiotics and prebiotics comes to the forefront.
Commonly known for their important role in reinstating and maintaining equilibrium within the gut’s flora, probiotics make appearances in fermented food and drinks like:
• Greek yoghurt
• Kimchi
• Sauerkraut
• Pickles
• Miso
• Tempeh
• Kefir
• Kombucha
Prebiotics, their loyal sidekicks, nourish these friendly bacteria, ensuring the continuity of gut harmony. Prebiotic-rich foods include:
• Garlic
• Asparagus
• Onions
• Leeks
• Artichokes
• Bananas
• Oats
• Barley
• Ginger
Tip: Ginger is great for helping to alleviate bloating and other digestive woes. Incorporate dried ginger powder to elevate your meals, or gently simmer ginger root slices for a soothing tea.
While what you eat remains of primary importance on your gut health journey, certain supplements could support your efforts.
Speak to your healthcare provider about whether any of the following would be beneficial for your unique needs:
• Probiotics
• Digestive enzymes
• Peppermint oil
• Curcumin
• Fennel
• Chamomile
• L-glutamine
• Artichoke extract
• Liquorice root
As the mind and gut maintain an intricate connection, managing stress plays an integral role in fostering gut goodness.
Some go-to mind-body techniques for daily stress reduction include:
• Meditation
• Breath work
• Yoga
• Tai chi
• Moderate cardio and resistance training

I n a world bustling with technological advancements and the constant hum of modernity, the pursuit of holistic wellbeing has emerged as a compelling antidote to the stresses and strains of contemporary life.
Amidst this search for balance, ancient healing systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have resurfaced as beacons of wisdom, offering time-tested practices that seamlessly integrate with our fast-paced lives. These age-old traditions, rooted in a profound understanding of the human body, mind, and spirit, hold valuable insights that continue to resonate with seekers of wellness today.
Originating in the Indian subcontinent more than 5 000 years ago, Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that treats the individual as a unique entity, taking into account their physical constitution, mental disposition, and environmental influences . Derived from the Sanskrit words "Ayur" (life) and "Veda" (knowledge), Ayurveda emphasises the intrinsic connection between all aspects of an individual's life and their overall health.
Central to Ayurveda is the concept of doshas - three bioenergetic forces that govern physiological and psychological functions. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha represent air and space, fire and water, and earth and water respectively. A person's constitution is determined by the dominance of these doshas, and imbalances are believed to be the root cause of ailments.
proven medicinal properties, as well as meditation and yoga for stress reduction. Ayurveda's emphasis on preventative care and individualised treatments aligns with contemporary preferences for personalised health approaches.
Traditional Chinese Medicine: Flowing towards Vitality
Encompassing a history of over 2 500 years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive system that views the human body as a microcosm of the universe, interconnected with the forces of nature
The balance of vital energy, or "Qi," and the harmonious interaction of opposing forces - Yin and Yang - are at the heart of TCM.
Ayurveda and TCM lies in their holistic and patient-centred approach.
Modern science has begun to acknowledge Ayurvedic principles, such as the use of certain herbs with
Acupuncture , one of TCM's most well-known practices, involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate Qi flow and restore balance. This ancient technique has gained recognition in modern times for its effectiveness in pain management, stress reduction, and even fertility enhancement.
Herbal medicine is another cornerstone of TCM. Through centuries of observation, practitioners have compiled a vast pharmacopeia of plants, minerals, and animal products with specific healing properties. These remedies are prescribed in complex formulations that are tailored to the individual's constitution and ailment.
Mind-body practices like Tai Chi and Qigong, which emphasise slow, flowing movements and controlled breathing, are also integral to TCM's approach to wellbeing. These practices not only enhance physical strength and flexibility, but also promote mental clarity and emotional balance.
In an era of quick fixes and instant gratification, the enduring appeal of
Furthermore, the alignment between these ancient healing systems and modern scientific discoveries is not coincidental. Many Ayurvedic herbs have been found to possess potent medicinal properties, and research into acupuncture's effects on the nervous system has yielded insights that bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and contemporary understanding. Incorporating ancient wisdom into modern lifestyles need not be a daunting task. Simple adjustments, such as incorporating Ayurvedic dietary principles or practising mindfulness through Tai Chi, can pave the way for profound transformations. Yet, it is essential to approach these practices with respect for their origins and an open heart to fully appreciate their potential.
In a world teeming with constant stimuli and relentless demands, the allure of ancient wisdom for modern wellbeing remains unwavering. Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine offer not just a reprieve from the chaos, but a comprehensive roadmap to holistic health - a convergence of timeless traditions and the urgent needs of our time. As the past and present intertwine, these ancient systems stand as a testament to the enduring quest for balance, harmony, and an enriched quality of life.

Widely known as the ‘silent killer’, high blood pressure or hypertension is more common than many realise, especially as many sufferers don’t exhibit any symptoms.
"High blood pressure or hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke, as it increases the force of blood against the artery walls, which in turn can stiffen and damage your arteries. This then decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to your heart, raising the threat of heart attack and stroke," explains prominent cardiologist Dr Martin Mpe.
According to Dr Mpe, studies have further shown a strong correlation between work stress, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
This is particularly concerning as CVD is a leading cause of death globally, although some four-fifths of premature deaths from heart disease can be prevented by making key lifestyle changes.
"To ensure employees' continued health and well-being, it's therefore important for both employers and for us as individuals to be more aware of the harmful effects of work stress, and to take active steps to better manage the issue," he advises.
In its mission to research and develop new treatment methods for hypertension and cardiovascular disease, Novartis South Africa is working hard to promote a healthy working environment – not only for its own employees, but for all South Africans through education and advocacy.
"We understand that there is a direct connection between acute workplace stress and health issues. That's why we believe that promoting employee wellbeing and decreasing stress is not only the right thing to do for our associates but is also crucial to the success of our organisation," shares Country President Rachel O’Neale.
For example, in addition to offering hybrid working, the company sets an example for South African businesses by offering an internal employee assistance programme that provides all associates with 24/7 access to psychological support. What’s more, their Mental Health First Aid programme has a growing network of over 800 mental health first aiders from around the world.
Dr Mpe recommends that both employers and employees take the following steps to help alleviate workplace stress and combat hypertension in the process:
• Encourage a healthier work-life balance by allowing for more flexible working hours and remote work options, as well as encouraging and taking regular breaks and vacations.
• Foster a supportive work environment and encourage open communication, providing opportunities for all team members to feel valued and express their concerns and ideas.
• Provide and engage with stress management resources such as workshops, seminars, or training programmes that share coping strategies and relaxation techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing exercises.
• Implement and participate in workplace wellness programmes that include physical activity, nutrition, mental health support, and even smoking cessation resources.
• Set realistic expectations and workloads. Avoid overloading employees (or yourself!) with unnecessary tasks and do away with unrealistically tight deadlines.
"As top employers and industry frontrunners, we believe that it is our responsibility to safeguard against diseases such as hypertension and heart disease by cultivating a positive working environment. By safeguarding against diseases such as heart disease and hypertension, we can set an example for others while ensuring we maintain a healthy, productive workforce that is ready to lead the way in advancing healthcare solutions and breakthrough medicines for patients,” concludes O’Neale.
"The effects of workplace stress from excessive workloads, long hours or high levels of pressure can manifest physically in a multitude of ways, such as a continuously elevated heart rate and raised blood pressure levels."
Most of us know all too well the profound impact that neglecting our mental health can have on our physical wellbeing and overall quality of life, exacerbating existing physical health issues and giving rise to new ones.
Mental illnesses like anxiety and depression are often referred to as invisible diseases, but experts caution that physical changes in the body can be indicators of untreated or undetected mental health problems. Psychiatrists and GPs working with community mental health organisation Rhiza Babuyile report encountering numerous cases of this nature among patients in communities and clinics nationwide.
"Mental illness is not merely 'all in the mind'; rather, it is a physical manifestation of neurological and chemical imbalances. The body provides various warning signs that the brain or central nervous system is in distress and requires attention," explains Katlego Assis, Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) and Projects Manager at Rhiza Babuyile.
One of the most common signs of acute mental illness is a significant fluctuation in blood pressure or blood sugar levels. This highlights the importance of monitoring and
maintaining mental health alongside practising good physical health habits, as they ultimately influence and intertwine with each other.
While it may appear that more and more people are experiencing depression and anxiety, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic, the issue runs much deeper than these two categories. There is a wide range of common mental disorders, some of which have more severe impacts on quality of life than others. Unfortunately, individuals suffering from these conditions often receive less attention due to the associated stigma.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental disorders are the leading cause of disability. While not all individuals with mental illness are disabled, some conditions can become so severe that they result in disability. People with mental illness have been known to spend one out of every six years living with a disability caused by their mental health condition.
People with a genetic predisposition to mental disorders can be triggered by various environmental factors, such as financial stress, substance abuse, or traumatic events. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diagnoses of depression and anxiety increased by more than 25% in the first year of the pandemic. Even before the pandemic, however, nearly a billion people worldwide were living with a mental disorder, including 14% of adolescents. Suicide accounted for more than 1 in 100 deaths, and 58% of suicides occurred before the age of 50. Depression and anxiety alone rose by more than 25% in the first year of the pandemic.
Depression and anxiety disorders, which were previously associated primarily with women in South Africa, have gained attention for affecting a significant portion of the male population.
disorder, according to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).
Much of the suffering that comes with mental illness can be managed, alleviated, and even prevented. Regular health checks, paying attention to your body and getting professional help are important to maintain a healthy body and mind. The mind is part of the body, after all - its wellness requires daily attention and self-love too.

Although women are statistically twice as likely to experience depression and anxiety disorders, one in eight men suffer from depression, and one in five men suffer from an anxietyrelated
Yesterday morning, I was overwhelmed with gratitude as I drove to teach a morning yoga session on Clifton beach in Cape Town. The beautiful summer's day filled my heart with joy, and I felt blessed to have a profession that brings me such fulfilment. However, as I approached Kloof Nek Road, my serenity was shattered by a distressing scene: police cars, flashing sirens, a crashed car, and the remnants of a helmet and motorbike scattered across the road.
In an instant, my own deep-rooted trauma resurfaced, despite my years of dedicated work to overcome it. Though I have made significant progress in finding lightness and joy, the sight of that helmet instantly transported me back to the memories of my own severe injuries and the prolonged suffering they inflicted upon me for more than half my life. The trauma encompasses multiple dimensions - emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual.
Tears welled up in my eyes uncontrollably as I continued to drive, fully aware of the life-altering impact that person on the motorbike must have experienced. Their existence had changed in an instant, forever altered, much like mine was on that fateful night many years ago.
At the age of 18, I spent two months in the hospital, my body broken with fractures in my neck, pelvis, and sacrum. I have no recollection of the accident itself, only fragments pieced together from the accounts of others and a haunting image of a speeding car losing control, soaring through the air, and ejecting me onto the unforgiving ground. My hospital memories are blurred, a haze of medicated dreams while under the influence of morphine. I often questioned when I would wake up from this surreal nightmare. In the initial month, I struggled to comprehend my surroundings, my own identity, and even the faces of those who came to support me. It took another month for reality to set in - an arduous existence marked by pain, healing, depression, and the relentless fight to regain strength and return to my former self. Anxiety coursed through my every fibre as I grappled with the notion of this "new, broken me," followed by a long and arduous journey of recovery. Acceptance, though still a daily practice, finally found its place in my life many years later.
Witnessing this recent accident transported me back to that very moment - just after my discharge from the hospital, still reliant on crutches, with my misaligned pelvis held together by healing screws from the multiple fractures. I struggled to support my stiff neck and endured constant pain in my fragile right hip and back. It was during this time that my mom accompanied me to buy new clothes, as none of my old garments fit my emaciated 38 kg frame. For the first month, I couldn't eat; instead, I relied on an intravenous drip for sustenance.
On our way to Eastgate Shopping Centre, while stopped at a major intersection, right in front of our eyes, we witnessed a taxi colliding with a motorbike. Upon impact, I instinctively buried my head, overwhelmed with shaking and uncontrollable tears. My mother attempted to console me, but the tears persisted, accompanied by deep gasps of shock and fear reverberating through my entire being. The sheer horror of witnessing such traumatic events inflicted upon someone else evoked haunting memories of my own past experiences. If this were written on paper, tear-stained drops would mark my words, evidence of the emotional turmoil within.
Organic Pine Bark Extract is sustainably harvested from Scots Pine in the north of Finland, where the air is pure and there is minimal human intervention. This pure supplement is rich in beneficial bioflavonoids, and popular for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial support. 100% active ingredients formulated by expert nutritionists.
Young bark from the inner and outer layers of the Pinus Sylvestris tree produce a potent extract of at least a 400:1 ratio. A gentle water extraction process preserves the active molecules and retains the rich pine bark colour. The trees are allowed to grow naturally, with no synthetic pesticides or other chemical sprays.
It both surprises and doesn't surprise me that this incident still resonates within me, eliciting a profound empathetic response towards those enduring any form of suffering. The silver lining, however, lies in the fact that in years past, such an occurrence would have completely derailed my day. I would have succumbed to incessant self-loathing, fixating on the physical and mental damage I had endured, mourning the loss of my former strength and grappling with the realisation that complete recovery was unlikely. The toll would have manifested in my demeanour, visible through my facial expressions and body language. My motivation would have waned, and the spectre of depression may have cast its shadow upon me.
But yesterday was different. In the midst of my tears, I took deliberate, deep breaths, drawing them from the depths of my belly, nurturing myself through the act of crying. I gently wiped my eyes and inhaled once more, grounding myself in a brief moment of respite. A smile formed on my face as I transitioned into a state of gratitude, acknowledging and appreciating the strength I had painstakingly cultivated across every aspect of my being. I parked the car, retrieved my yoga mats, and hastened towards the beach to meet my clients for a sunrise yoga session on Clifton - an opportunity to bestow the gift of tranquility and fulfilment upon others, which proved to be both a blessing and a wondrous experience.
The journey of learning and embracing the various facets of yoga has been instrumental in my healing process, permeating every level of my existence. It has been my steadfast companion throughout the years and will continue to guide me for the remainder of my time on this earth. The time has come to commit my story to paper - an account that has dwelled within me for far too long, half of my lifetime. Though I have felt the urge to share fragments of it on several occasions, now is the moment to unburden myself completely, allowing for a deeper level of healing. By doing so, I aspire to offer solace and inspiration to others, instilling in them the belief that recovery is indeed possible - that both body and mind possess the innate capacity to heal, if given the opportunity and approached with diligence.
With love extended to you, wherever you may be and whatever emotions you may be grappling with, I implore you to breathe through it. Trust that you will emerge from the depths and find solace. Namaste.

The year 2020 brought about a mass introspection and a reassessment of ideals, unlocking a deeper desire in people to connect with the outdoors and invest in their wellbeing. Surveys show that between 30 and 40% of young adults took up new outdoor activities in the year following the pandemic, with running, hill walking, hiking, and sea swimming being the top four.
Multi-day mountain hiking has always attracted a fair share of die-hard fans, a unique breed of adventurous outdoors people. However, it is quickly becoming a more popular, appealing, and accessible aspect of South African life
The Drakensberg wilderness, which contains 36% of the country's proclaimed wilderness areas and all of its highest peaks, is considered by most to be the ultimate hiking destination in South Africa. Not only is it renowned for its towering basalt escarpment, but also for the pristine nature of its forests, rivers, flora, and fauna.
Since the earliest written records of people encountering the 'Dragon's Back' or the 'Barrier of Spears,' there has been an element of something magically raw that leaves a lasting mark. There's an as-yet-undefined combination of components, with a touch of the supernatural, that make hiking in the 'berg' so pure, refreshing, slightly daunting, and yet always alluring.
"I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in."
- John Muir, Mountaineer & Conservationist
Long before terms like forest bathing, earthing/grounding, and ice baths entered our vocabulary, hikers would testify to the invigorating connection experienced through days spent moving in remote wilderness.
Apart from the sense of accomplishment, the spectacular views, and the wellness benefits, it's worth rewarding yourself with the best nourishment.
Wholesome hiking is very much achievable today, with a host of enjoyable, compact, and environmentally-friendly products and brands available. Avoid making the common mistake of buying a whole host of untried, ‘scientific’ (often artificial) mixes the day before a hike. Instead, stick to tasty, natural, and wholefood/superfood solutions, and don't forget the fresh AeroPress coffee!
All of these now proven modern practices are naturally woven into a Drakensberg multi-day hike, along with the magnificent beauty, the freshest air, and sipping crisp water straight from the stream.
Disconnect from the routine, pace, and demands of modern humanity. Leave behind the online world and connect with the timeless rhythm of the peaks. Drift off to sleep just after sunset, accompanied by the soothing sounds of a flowing river, owls on the prowl, or the wind through the crags. Wake up at sunrise to the sweet melody of birds chirping and vultures gliding by on the thermals.
Connect with people by sharing, enduring, and appreciating new experiences together, whether it's with family or newfound friends. Small group hikes will almost always broaden your horizons across cultures and continents, as well as being the best way to progress in the neverending school of outdoor skills and hike hacks.
What is a worthy adventure without some form of hardship or effort? The gear and gadgets may play an important part, but a hike is primarily a physical and mental challenge. It involves covering wilderness terrain, being exposed to the elements, and surviving in an isolated environment, far from the comforts of a modern home, while carrying all you need on your back. It's a group activity, but also a deeply personal pursuit.
Remember to leave no trace and respect the environment, the unpredictable weather, the terrain, and your fellow hikers. Your reward and fulfilment are significantly influenced by respecting the physical and practical preparation process.
These words, though mundane in everyday life, evolve into a tangible personal identification somewhere during a journey into the berg.
To fully embrace the wellness benefits of a hike, it's recommended to hike for around five to six hours a day, providing ample time to connect at each break, viewpoint, and wilderness campsite.
Speak to people, do your research, understand the risks, and ensure that you have all the right gear. Unless you've gained significant experience, it's advisable to use a qualified guide.

"Most people are on the world, not in it…touching but separate. The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness."
- John Muir
"Few places in this world are more dangerous than home. Fear not, therefore, to try the mountain passes. They will kill care, save you from deadly apathy, set you free, and call forth every faculty into vigorous, enthusiastic action."
- John Muir

Delicate and dainty or colourful and confident, artfully adorned nails can have a surprising impact on mood, self-perception, and overall sense of style.
However, after trying the different treatments and being lured into the many plush and luxurious salons time after time, your nails can start to become brittle and fragile after all the intervention.
Each chemical treatment can strip your nails of their natural nourishment. Along with the increase of chipping and cracking, you can face other health risks as a result of your time at the salon. These include bacterial infection, dermatitis, warts and even premature ageing from the quick-drying UV light.
How are your nails faring? Have you noticed that they have started peeling; that white spots have begun popping up on your nail beds; that horizontal grooves have started developing; or that the skin around your nail beds has become red and swollen? It might be time to give your nails a bit of TLC and look at alternative treatments and ways to get back to basics for natural nourishment. Nail care to revolutionise your nail health from drab, dry and damaged:
1. Give your nails a little lovin’
Just like your skin and hair, your nails can benefit from some hydration. Try rubbing some natural moisturiser or hydrating oil into your nail beds and cuticles after every hand wash or sanitation to start seeing the benefits. Tree Of Life Pure Organic Argan Oil Nail Treatment is a great option for nourishing nails, as well as the Wellness Uplifting Hand & Body Lotio n (which comes in a nifty travel size for on-the-go TLC).
2. Boost your beauty from the inside out
Research suggests that biotin, one of the B complex vitamins, can help strengthen weak or brittle fingernails, whilst also boosting your skin, hair, eye, liver and nervous system health. Yuicy’s Biotin Gummies are formulated with biotin, as well as other important beauty vitamins such as vitamins B12, zinc, folic acid, and beta-carotene, and will help boost your beauty from the inside.
Many traditional nail products contain toxic chemicals that can strip your nails of their health and result in brittleness, splitting, and cracking. Avoid using nail products containing chemicals such as toluene, dimethyl and camphor by reading the labels before purchasing. Also limit your use of nail polish remover, or opt for an acetonefree formula, and wear gloves when cleaning your home.
4. Don’t blame the craftsman, blame the tools
Take a break from cleaning underneath your nails with metal tools and using those oldas-time emery boards to avoid developing bacterial or fungal infections and creating micro-tears in your nails. Opt instead for water, natural soap, and a glass or crystal nail file when your nails call for attention. If you’ve already developed a fungal infection, try the Proguard Anti-Fungal Nail Solution to treat it.
5. Leave your cuticles to their own devices
Often cut or removed during salon manicures, cuticles are actually a very important agent to safeguard your nail health, as they act as barriers for bacteria. Instead of removing them, give them a little bit of love with a natural moisturiser, and simply push them back for that beautifully clean and clear look. The Simply Bee Cuticle Cream is a brilliant all-natural solution to moisten your cuticles but also regenerate them and clear any threats, thanks to its antibacterial properties.
6. Indulge in acrylic or gel treatments sparingly
If you are keen on getting a long-lasting and convenient acrylic or gel treatment done on your nails, there are some ways to minimise the damage. First, apply a SPF of 30 to 50 sunscreen to your hands before placing them under the UV light (the Flatdog Bodyguard Marine Safe Sunscreen SPF 50 is a great option for this).
Removing this kind of manicure can also be very damaging, so instead of peeling the layer off yourself, get the nail polish professionally removed and schedule a break from the treatment so that your nails can rest and repair before the next.

Supplement Standards
We believe that supplements are just as the name implies - a tool to supplement a balanced diet and provide high-quality nutrients to support your body in times of need.
1. Ingredients - We believe that supplements shouldn’t compromise your health, which is why we’ve banned hundreds of ingredients, including artificial preservatives, flavours, colours, and sweeteners that we feel won't help give your body the boost it needs.
2. Trustworthy and PerformanceTested - Our experts assess products to determine a formulation's purpose, efficacy, manufacturing processes, and history. We work with industry pioneers and practitioners, many of whom are leaders in the supplements world, to ensure that we have supplements that deliver what they promise.
3. Transparency - All claims must have supporting documents.
Food Standards
We love to engage with our food suppliers and participate in the journey, as we are committed to bringing the best ingredients to your table.
1. Ingredients - Our Foods & Fresh Ingredients Policy does not allow for artificial antioxidants, colours, flavours, sweeteners, emulsifiers, preservatives, or flavour enhancers. We also say no to bleaching agents, trans fats, and acidulants.
2. Trustworthy and PerformanceTested - We taste all products that come through our doors. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it!
Our diverse tasting panel provides feedback, and from there we decide if a product may appear on our shelves.
3. Transparency - Every food product that has a claim MUST have an accompanying certification. From ‘gluten-free’ to ‘organic’, each claim is governed by its own regulatory requirements.
Eco Home Standards
When it comes to household cleaning, our priority is to provide customers with effective cleaning products that have a lower impact on the planet. Our rigorous standards for cleaning and other household products include:
1. Ingredients - We believe that some ingredients don’t belong in your home, let alone wiped on surfaces that you and your family touch. We ban over 100 common cleaning chemicals, including optical brighteners, FD&C colours, phosphates, phthalates, triclosan, and ammonia.
Ingredients must be eco-friendly, nontoxic, hypoallergenic, and pet-friendly.
2. Trustworthy and PerformanceTested - We test the efficacy of our products to ensure that they remove dirt and stains effectively. For general testing, we trial the products ourselves, in real-life scenarios, as well as circulate usability questionnaires. If a product states an ‘anti-viral’ or ‘anti-bacterial’ claim, we
request specifications or supporting documentation showing laboratory tests to prove this.
3. Transparency - We require all ingredients to be listed on the label, except in the case of fragrance and enzyme blends.
Beauty Standards
We believe that what you put on your body is as important as what you put in your body. Our Body Care Standards go beyond conventional ‘clean beauty’ claims, and apply to all of our body care and beauty products to ensure that we offer a best-in-class range.
1. Ingredients - Our Product Technology department is continually reviewing the latest research, consulting with independent industry experts, and engaging with our suppliers to determine an ingredient’s impact on the environment and human health. We strive to ensure that you, your family, and our planet are protected from everyday exposure to potentially toxic chemicals in personal care and beauty products.
2. Our Ingredients Policy for Body Care is extensive, with over 100 typical ingredients banned, including parabens, sulphates, phthalates, sodium lauryl/laureth sulphates (SLS’s), BHT, BHA, disodium EDTA, microbeads, PEG numbers, talc, and petroleum/petrolatum.
Air pollution poses an inescapable threat to both the environment and human health, including the well-being of our skin. In fact, dermatological studies have consistently demonstrated that air pollution significantly contributes to premature skin ageing.
This predicament is a consequence of rapid urbanisation and expanding industrialisation. Both outdoor and indoor air pollution stem from human activities such as electricity generation, industrial processes, waste disposal, vehicle emissions, agriculture, and domestic fuel burning, to name just a few. The resulting pollutants include heat-trapping gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and ozone, as well as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter.
Here's how these pollutants harm the skin:
Ozone
An influential oxidant that triggers an inflammatory response, leading to the onset of acne and dermatitis.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
These compounds, including moulds, bacteria, and viruses, provoke allergic skin reactions, rashes, and hives.
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
Formed through the combustion of oil, gas, and coal, these substances disrupt the skin's protective microbiota, foster pathogens, and compromise the immune system.
Particulate Matter (PM2.5 & PM10)
These particles adhere to the skin daily. PM2.5 particles are so minuscule that they easily penetrate skin pores and reach the spaces between skin cells. This can lead to cellular-level inflammation, acne, dehydration, pigmentation, and fine lines. Over time, this damage can be severe enough to reduce collagen levels, weakening the skin's structure and altering DNA cells.
As I write this article outdoors on a blustery day in my city, I'm reminded of the importance of monitoring the Realtime Air Quality Index (AQI) to gauge air quality. Given the poor air quality today, it's wise to retreat indoors.
Notably, five cities in South Africa rank among the world's top 50 most polluted cities. While relocating to cleaner areas like the Karoo might not be feasible for everyone, a comprehensive anti-pollution plan can help mitigate the adverse effects of pollution on your skin.
Skincare Routine
• Incorporate antioxidant-rich skincare products to combat the damage caused by free radicals.
• Apply sunscreen to safeguard your skin's natural barrier against particles and ozone rays.
• Never skip your evening cleansing routine to eliminate daily pollution build-up.
• Regular exfoliation helps detoxify pores and prevent pollutants from adhering.
• Layer serums and moisturisers to create a barrier against small particles.
Key Ingredients
• Look for products containing vitamins A, B3, C, and E, which act as antioxidants combating free radicals.
• Vitamin C supports collagen synthesis and, when combined with vitamin E, provides UV damage protection.
• Vitamin A or retinol can reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
• Add alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) for effective exfoliation.
• Activated charcoal or kaolin clay aids in detoxification.
• Embrace algae, a potent anti-ageing compound that boosts collagen and elastin production, reducing wrinkles and promoting cellular renewal.
• Harness the benefits of kelp, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, moisturisation, and elasticity maintenance.
• Choose products containing ceramides to counter metabolic processes that contribute to hyperpigmentation and age spots.
• Hyaluronic acid offers hydration, protection, and supports cell renewal.
• Microbiomes help restore balance, reducing occurrences of acne and eczema.
• Additionally, ingredients like resveratrol, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), polyphenols, flavonoids, ferulic acid, astaxanthin, and glutathione protect the skin from free radicals.
• Enhance your skincare regimen with a diet rich in vitamins A, B3, C, and E.
• Integrate detoxifying seaweed into your diet; its iodine content aids in skin regeneration and the removal of free radicals, heavy metals, and pollutants.
• Add pre- and probiotics to fortify the skin's natural defences and establish a barrier against pollution.
• Opt for green and white tea, both effective combatants against oxidative stress.
The pursuit of clean air requires a sustained, global effort. However, by making simple changes and remaining vigilant about your air quality, you can significantly reduce its impact on your health and skin.

Looking to refresh your home? Do a sustainable renovation from start to finish by reducing waste, recycling, upcycling, and using eco-friendly materials.
If you’re about to undertake a home renovation, making smart choices can cause a difference in the amount of waste and greenhouse gas emissions associated with the work.
The first step to a sustainable renovation is to make waste reduction part of the conversation. Whether you’re working with an architect, designer, or construction company, start by discussing how to tackle a green home improvement project without demolishing the environment.
Next, look at what you already have with an eye for upcycling. The most ecofriendly materials are the ones already in your home. Those old cabinets might look brand new with a fresh coat of paint and gorgeous hardware. You can turn an older dresser with character into a new bathroom vanity with just a remnant or recycled glass countertop and fixtures. You could even find fixtures at an antique shop or salvage yard to mix the old with the new for a very ontrend vibe.
Making energy efficiency a part of your plan will help the environment and save you money, especially over time. If you’re replacing appliances, look for the Energy Star logo, which means you’ll save on energy bills for years to come and probably get a tax incentive.
Recycling
Construction and demolition materials can be kept out of the landfill by choosing used or recycled materials. Demolition is everything you’re taking out, and construction is what you’re putting in. So how do you recycle the materials you’re taking out? The answer depends on how you built your home.
Wood, especially old-growth wood, is highly recyclable and reusable, particularly if the wood was fastened using nails and screws rather than adhesive. Many construction materials have a high resale value. These materials include hardwood flooring, multi-paned windows, architectural moldings, and unique doors or plumbing/electrical fixtures. Who knew your home demo could actually build up your wallet?
Upcycling
Another option is to buy pre-owned. Many companies now specialise in selling pre-owned high-end kitchens, including appliances and cabinets. This approach saves both money and the environment. A sustainable renovator can save big by purchasing a pre-owned or former display kitchen. In this way, all the costs and environmental pollution associated with creating and transporting new materials are also saved.
Embrace natural therapeutic properties of SOiL organic essential oils with...
Of course, you may have to demo some things. A gentle demo allows functional and often desirable items to be donated, keeping them out of the landfill.
Organisations like Habitat for Humanity accept donations of sinks, toilets, bathtubs, cabinets, working appliances, doors, windows, lumber, and more.
When you do have to buy something new, choose materials made of natural or recycled products. Natural fibres emit less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for better air quality inside your home.
Of course, you can do more than donate your gently demolished construction materials to a re-supplier. You can purchase there as well. People just like you have done ‘delicate demos’ and donated those materials, which you can use for your renovation.
Another option is shopping thrift stores and antique malls for wellcrafted furniture you can use in your sustainable renovation, which gives you bonus points for thrill and adventure. Imagine finding that special end table for your living room or a bedroom set that contrasts perfectly with your new paint colour.
And upcycling isn’t just for the professionals. You can also use your

creativity to get a custom piece you’ll never see in another home. Maybe that special end table isn’t quite perfect, but with light sanding and a coat of paint, it would be the perfect pop to set off your new natural fibre area rug.
This approach - called a circular economy - is even better than recycling materials because recycling often ends up being ‘downcycling’. Ideally, recycling something would mean it is broken down to its basic materials and remade into something new. This process would ease the pressure on using virgin raw materials. However, in many places, recycling includes incineration, which doesn’t actually replace using virgin materials.
Saving virgin materials and all the environmental costs associated with processing and transporting them is why sustainability is so critical. Proper waste disposal is one aspect of this, as it reduces the need to process and transport new materials. The longer something lasts and the lower its environmental impact, the better it is for everyone. Older buildings are good examples of how to make something durable.
Fortunately, today there are plenty of low-waste alternatives for materials and finishes, eco-friendly materials, and energy-efficient ways to reduce a renovation’s carbon footprint.
Many companies now take natural cork wine stoppers and turn them into different products. Consumers can drop their used corks off at locations across the country, where they are picked up and turned into mosaic flooring or acoustic wall and ceiling panels.
Newspapers are being turned back into wood through a process that uses compression and glue to create the look of wood grain texture and can be used for many applications.
The logging industry throws tree bark away, but some companies now repurpose that bark for natural siding. It makes perfect sense - after all, the bark is what protects trees from weather, disease, and insects.
Old windows and solar industry waste are being turned into 100% recycled glass tiles with no VOCs and colour options that resemble sea glass. Recycled glass is also being used to create countertops that don’t carry the resource-intensive manufacturing process of granite or marble.
Ash
Ash-byproduct from coal combustion mixed with cement makes a product called AshCrete, which reduces the amount of coal fly ash going into the landfill. And it’s perfectly safe as the coal ash is encapsulated in the concrete - the same idea used to cover old asbestos flooring - so that it’s safe for the consumer.
Enviroboards are made of materials like magnesium, sawdust, and fibre cloth. These boards replace timber for the inner portions of a home, roof linings, and underlay systems. They are stronger than regular lumber and won’t warp over time because they are water- and humidity-resistant.
And let’s not forget energy efficiency. It’s good to start with an energy audit from your local power company so you know exactly where your home can be improved. The resulting report will give you recommendations for improvements. Check with your insurance company to see if any modifications are covered.
You might need to increase the insulation in your home (with ecofriendly products like denim), along with air sealing, to improve overall performance. However, some simple steps you can take to improve energy efficiency include:
• Making the most of your natural shade and sun
• Using cold water whenever possible
• Unplugging unused appliances
• Replacing your lightbulbs with energy-efficient LEDs
Now that you have plenty of tips and tricks to make your renovation more sustainable, it’s time to choose what you can use and make a plan. Remember to keep sustainability part of the conversation from beginning to end, and recycle at every opportunity. Talk about it early and often with all your contractors, and you’ll be sure to have a renovation that leaves a beautiful mark on your eco-friendly home and the environment.
Based on a recent Bloomberg study 4, “South Africa ranks as the second-most stressed-out country in the world”, whilst a Deloitte Women @ Work Report claims that “One in two working women in South Africa report higher stress levels, 40% feel burnt out and 51% feel their stress levels are higher than a year ago”.

In recent times, a significant shift appears to have taken place within the familial and social context: people are becoming increasingly attuned to mental health, determined to break free from generations of trauma, and committed to nurturing healthier relationships.
Embarking on a healing journey can prove challenging, especially when we find ourselves trapped within our own behaviour patterns. A simple yet impactful method to enhance your communication skills begins within the family unit. But how?
Enter Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – not merely a tool exclusive to therapists, but a resource that any family member can employ to unravel conflicts and fortify bonds.
it equips us to manage emotions, preempting eruptions fuelled by anger or frustration.
So, how can you introduce DBT into your family dynamics?
Imagine this scenario:
You've just arrived at a family holiday destination. The day is sweltering, and tension hangs heavy in the air. Your only desire is a replenishing meal, but your siblings are eager to explore the unfamiliar surroundings without wasting time on food. Before you realise it, a minor disagreement escalates into a heated argument. A cycle of negativity ensues, with each party trying to outdo the other in dampening the mood. Your emotions flare – this is the moment to employ DBT.
Instead of impulsively acting on your feelings, take a mindful pause. Breathe before responding. Acknowledge your emotions; they are valid. As you grant yourself this moment for emotional processing, you also provide your family members the opportunity to practise mindfulness. This grants you a fresh perspective to comprehend their standpoint.
Rather than clashing over differing preferences, validate each other's choices ("I understand your eagerness to explore, and I'm excited to join you.")
Once you establish the validity of your siblings’ feelings, you can address the core issue. This is an ideal moment for collaborative problem-solving. ("What if we grab some food to go and take a leisurely stroll while we eat?")
Initially developed by Dr. Marsha M. Linehan in the 1980s to aid individuals in managing intense emotions (particularly those associated with borderline personality disorder), DBT has since permeated various domains, including family therapy, where its techniques are used to defuse conflicts and cultivate effective communication.
While misunderstandings and conflicts may remain unavoidable, the power to communicate effectively lies within our grasp – and that's where DBT shines.
When families communicate adeptly, misunderstandings diminish, empathy flourishes, and relationships thrive.
Recognising your loved ones' emotions is as crucial as acknowledging your own.
This might seem like a straightforward task, but intense emotions often blind us to reason. Thus, regulating emotions during conflicts is paramount. Maintain your composure and express your feelings constructively. This approach minimises misunderstandings and ensures effective communication of your needs. ("I'm also eager to explore! Considering our lengthy drive, I'd greatly appreciate it if we could refuel before embarking on our day of adventures.")
During this journey, remain open to adapting plans, embracing change, and uncovering positives in every situation. While you might forgo a leisurely sit-down meal, you'll relish a satisfying repast while bonding with your siblings – an invaluable experience.
By weaving DBT principles into your family interactions, you're not merely resolving conflicts; you're constructing bridges of comprehension capable of withstanding any storm.
It's a profound gesture of understanding in a world often besieged by distractions. Additionally,
So, the next time you find yourself entangled in a spirited debate over movie choices or front-seat privileges, remember to be mindful, communicate constructively, validate others' emotions, and collaboratively devise solutions. This practice will seamlessly extend into all facets of your life, elevate your overall well-being, and aid in resolving conflicts far weightier than typical family disagreements.
Families comprise a medley of personalities, and DBT facilitates the discovery of common ground between embracing our loved ones as they are and fostering positive change.
DBT teaches us the art of presence and active listening, validating everyone's emotions and concerns.
C lose your eyes for a moment and imagine yourself strolling down the bustling streets of that city in which you’ve always wanted to live. You’re on your way to secure that promotion you’ve been fantasising about - the one where you aren’t just ascending the corporate ladder, but practically catapulting to your dream job in the company. Sounds like a fairy tale, doesn't it?
But what if all of this isn't merely some fanciful daydream? What if there was a way to harness the power of imagination to shape your reality, to achieve your goals, and to create the life you have always dreamt of?
Welcome to the world of creative visualisation, a technique that blends the magic of imagination with the science of success.
Creative visualisation is the art of using your imagination to create vivid mental images of your desires and goals. While it might seem like a modern self-help trend, its roots can be traced back to ancient civilizations and spiritual traditions. From Native American vision quests to ancient Greek practices of using mental imagery for healing, creative visualisation has a rich and diverse history. However, it gained prominence in the 20th century through the work of pioneers like Napoleon Hill and Maxwell Maltz, who explored the link between mental imagery and achievement.
Time and again, it has been proven that your thoughts influence your actions. By practising creative visualisation, you train your mind to think positively in moments when life becomes overwhelming - which, in turn, affects your behaviour and decisions.
Failure is a stepping stone to success, and creative visualisation can help you navigate setbacks. By visualising yourself overcoming obstacles, you develop the resilience needed to bounce back stronger than ever.
FIND YOUR ZEN ZONE
Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you can immerse yourself in your thoughts without distraction.
DREAM BIG
Identify your goals and desires. These could be personal, professional, or even spiritual aspirations. Don’t be afraid to aim too high. As they say, shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars.
Start to vividly imagine your goals and view them as if you have already achieved all your heart's desires. You can embody these visualisations by engaging all your senses - see, hear, feel, and even smell the scenario.
Infuse your visualisations with genuine emotion. Feel the happiness, pride, and fulfilment that come with achieving your dreams.
After each session, take a few moments to express gratitude for the opportunities that will come your way.
Creative visualisation is not simply a magic wand, but it does fuel inspired action. Take steps towards your goals with newfound confidence and determination.
DAILY DOSE
Dedicate time each day to your creative visualisation practice. Consistency is key to rewiring your mind for success.
Now that we have the basics covered, you may be wondering how you can incorporate this into your life, and how to know if it is working.
Here are a few tips for beginners struggling to get into the groove of daily visualisation...
Now that you have a step-by-step guide to incorporating and embracing creative visualisation in your life, you are not just dreaming – you are crafting your reality, one vivid image at a time.
Think of creative visualisation as a mental launchpad for your goals. By consistently envisioning your desired outcomes, you will boost your confidence, enhance your focus, and skyrocket your chances of success.
As the adage suggests, life inevitably presents us with a few unassailable stressors: death, taxes...and change.
Transitioning from one home to another, changing jobs, evolving relationships, pursuing new passions and opportunities - each day, even when devoid of these significant life events, carries the potential for change, often accompanied by discomfort.
Your body instinctively perceives change as a challenge, triggering the fight-or-flight response. Prolonged exposure to this mode can impact your digestive health, immune system, bone density, sexual well-being, anxiety levels, nervous system, and inflammation, leading to imbalances, tensions, and an increased risk of chronic ailments.
Incorporating wellness practices into your life can help mitigate the effects of short-term stress and change:
Ensure sufficient sleep, adhere to a consistent sleep schedule, and limit screen time before bedtime.
Lean on your trusted friends and family to share your experiences, express emotions, and find solace in a supportive community.
As the saying goes, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
Keep prioritising a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins, while avoiding stimulants like caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
Allocate time to connect with nature, engage in mindfulness practices, practise breathing exercises, and incorporate regular physical activity into your routine to release endorphins and anchor yourself in the present moment.
When stress surges during moments of upheaval and discomfort, a few strategies can help centre yourself and navigate through the turmoil:
Rather than resisting or succumbing to fear, when the urge to fight or flee emerges, acknowledge that you're facing a challenge, and consider the growth opportunities it holds.
Recognise that change, much like personal growth, doesn't follow a linear path. Expect setbacks on some days and leaps forward on others. Begin by charting your progress, tasks, goals, and expectations, helping you to appreciate your accomplishments and the finite nature of this transformative period.
Whether the change is positive or negative, it can be draining. Allow space for your emotions and acknowledge the impact of the transition. Sometimes, shedding tears on a tough day can bring clarity and a brighter outlook.
No matter the scale of the change, you can retain a degree of control. Acknowledge this agency and break your tasks into manageable components. Set time boundaries to maintain focus on other objectives and identify what lies beyond your sphere of influence.
Recall the wisdom of Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series: "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." Amidst change, cherish the moments of levity over absurdity, kindness prevailing over frustration, and love conquering all. Foster resilience by quieting your racing mind and embracing positivity.
Change, akin to time, waits for no one and continually disrupts the structures you've established. Yet, through cultivating resilience and recalibrating your inner strength, you can greet the tempest of change with a smile.
As part of our Wellness Training Academy , we have included learning and development modules that focus on individual, team, and leadership effectiveness within our organisation. Our aim is to create a common language throughout the business when it comes to understanding ourselves, each other, and the team dynamics that are present. One of the ways in which we create awareness of personality preferences, innate strengths, development areas, and blind spots, is by working with the Insights Discovery Model
Our Group Head of Organisational Sustainability, Olivia Badach , is an accredited Insights Discovery Client Practitioner with Insights Learning and Development, and has been working with this psychology-based tool for over 10 years.
“The value of investing in people’s understanding of themselves can never be overstated. Awareness is at the heart of our well-being, whether it be mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual…and without knowing ourselves, we cannot truly appreciate, celebrate, and invite diversity - and therefore creativity and innovationinto our personal and organisational lives,” she shares.
As part of our onboarding experience, we offer new team members a oneday Culture and Communications
workshop, which includes the basic understanding of the Four Colour Energies when it comes to personality preferences, and gives them a common language to discuss behaviours within the organisational context. We have further one-day experiences that include People Management Skills, and Leadership Principles that deepen the introductory Culture and Communications experience.
Teams are also introduced to the Insights Discovery Team Effectiveness Model as part of bespoke teambuilding experiences, and our senior leadership team and a number of managers throughout the organisation have received a full Insights Discovery Personal Effectiveness profile as part of their personal development journeys. What’s more, all our Store Leaders go through the Insights Explore online personal development process, with support and guidance from Badach.
“When we understand and appreciate ourselves more, we have an increased capacity to be genuinely curious about how others think and feel without becoming threatened by viewpoints that might differ from our own. It is as if our window of tolerance expands and the triggers lessen (or we become more adept at dealing with them) so that we can more effectively adapt our communication style to meet the needs of others, plus ask for what we need in a way that is understood through our common language,” Badach goes on to explain.
In our fast-paced and ever-changing world, the sustainability of our organisations has become even more dependent on people who are agile, can adapt their behavioural style appropriately, and can connect authentically and effectively within the wider ecosystem to ensure positive impact and value creation at an individual and collective level.

When you understand the money language, you will be able to make informed financial decisions on a daily basis. This might seem like a mundane exercise, but it’s a massive gamechanger. If making smart financial decisions becomes your daily habit, then those decisions will snowball with time to a point where it becomes a force of its own, propelling you towards financial independence.
Let me give you a simple example. If you make an effort to regularly go through your monthly bank statements, chances are that you will end up fully understanding what’s going on with your finances. This knowledge will enable you to reduce costs. You could start by cutting unnecessary fees and penalties on your bank account. It helps that nowadays the banking industry is so competitive that every year banks introduce new accounts that are cheaper but offer more benefits. You’ll still find people stuck on old, outdated bank accounts that are expensive but offer limited benefits, but to switch from these outdated ones to new ones is very cheap, or sometimes even free (if it’s done within the same bank). The money you’ll save from switching to a new and improved bank account can be channelled towards an investment. It also helps that you can now invest as little as R150 per month on the stock market through exchangetraded funds (ETFs).
This habit might seem ineffective at the start, but with time it can develop into a massive snowball.
Ask any parent what they want for their children, and 9 out of 10 will say a better life than the one they had. However, it’s a known fact that the biggest challenges of parenthood are finance-related. When money becomes scarce, then we as parents are left with limited options to give our children the life we feel they deserve. We end up struggling with our children, and then watch them struggle with their own children, and so the cycle continues. This is a painful experience, to say the least.
Now, imagine if you can crack the code and turn things around. And all it takes is an understanding of how money works. They say money talks, right? Imagine being one of the few people who understand its language.
I once attended a Christmas lunch at a friend’s house in the northern suburbs of Joburg. After eating, we retreated outdoors to the lapa, where our host entertained us with music and drinks. I couldn’t help but notice that he was using a wireless portable speaker with colourful lights. The sound quality was amazing. When I complimented him on it, he said the ‘boombox’ was a Christmas gift for his daughter, who’d done well at school. He didn’t hesitate to reveal the price tag as well.
‘Can you believe it cost me R6 000?’ he said with a smile.
‘Really?’ said the eavesdropper next to me. ‘When we were growing up, you could buy a complete music centre with that kind of money. Today you can only buy one speaker?’ We all laughed at this response.
At that point, my mind drifted to an imaginary place. I saw the daughter at school, standing in front of her class, telling them how she spent her Christmas and what type of gifts she received. But instead of bragging about a boombox, she tells the class that her dad had bought her two ETFs worth R3 000 each. One ETF is for the
JSE Top 40, and the other is the S&P 500. Even though she’s only 10 years old, she can explain to the class what an ETF is and how it’s going to benefit her over time: ‘My dad said that instead of buying something that looks cool now but gets old and broken, he bought me something that will become more valuable in the future. And I think that’s really cool.’ As she wraps up her presentation, my mind returns to the lapa to enjoy the crisp sound and drinks.
Another benefit of understanding the money language will be your ability to identify the right people to help you to grow your money. Nobody knows it all. At some point, whether at the beginning or later on in your investment journey, you are going to need some assistance. Your knowledge of the money language will help you identify like-minded people who speak the same language as you. And the opposite applies, too: if you don’t understand the language, you run the risk of falling prey to fraudsters and scammers.
Just a few years ago, a wave of pyramid schemes swept the country. People were throwing their life savings into these scams and losing everything. One of my potential clients, a professional doctor, was urging me to come up with an investment
idea that could match the returns of a cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin) that he wanted to invest in. I wanted to impress him, so I went out and did thorough research, but I couldn’t find anything that matched those returns with his risk profile. I gave him the disappointing news.
Then he invited me to a presentation by these fraudsters posing as investment professionals. They hadn’t even finished the introduction of their presentation when I stood up and left. I picked up early that it was a scam based on the language they were using: ‘double your money in days’, ‘can’t lose’, ‘risk-free’, ‘guaranteed’ and ‘more investors, more money’. When you hear things like this, beware.
Another important benefit of understanding and speaking the money language is that, in your personal life, you will end up surrounding yourself with people who speak the same language. It’s as they say: your network is your net worth. One reason why the rich get richer is because they always hang out together. They visit each other’s homes, attend the same functions, play golf at the same golf clubs. They do business together and their children go to the same or similar schools. It’s a circle that’s hard to penetrate if you can’t speak their money language. If
you want to increase your net worth, then you need to surround yourself with the right network of people who speak the same language.
Let me illustrate this with a story from someone with whom you might be familiar. His name is Jannie Mouton, and he’s the founder of PSG Group and Capitec Bank. In his autobiography, And Then They Fired Me, Jannie describes how he got his breakthrough. After being fired from the brokerage firm he helped establish – Senekal, Mouton & Kitshoff (SMK) – Jannie found himself jobless at the age of 50, his self-confidence in tatters. Then one day he was paid a visit at home by a man called Piet de Jongh.
Who is Piet de Jongh? Piet is the son of Theunis de Jongh, the former governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). Those who are old enough will remember his signature on our paper money. Piet de Jongh was sent to Jannie by his brother-in-law Jannie Kitshoff. Who is Jannie Kitshoff ? Jannie K, as he’s known within his inner circle, was one of the three founding partners of the brokerage firm that fired Jannie Mouton. But Jannie K had left the firm years before that incident. Interestingly, both Jannie K and Jannie Mouton were best friends of G.T. Ferreira, Laurie Dippenaar and Paul Harries, the founders of Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and First National Bank (FNB).
How did this network work in Jannie Mouton’s favour? Piet went to see him to tell him about a once-in-a-lifetime deal: a small, listed company called the Professional Assignment Group (PAG) was trading at a huge discount and its 60% controlling stake was up for grabs. So, this group of friends raised the money from their other friends at RMB to finance the deal and let their friends at SMK broker the deal. I like the fact that even though SMK had fired him, Jannie roped them into the deal. Everyone spoke the same language and understood that it’s nothing personal – it’s business.
Eighteen months after they’d paid R7 million for PAG, another company approached them and offered them R107 million for it. An estimated R100 million in profit in the space of 18 months! This is what they mean when they say that your network is your net worth.
I can go on and on about the benefits of understanding the money language. How people who understand the language eventually move from being investors to philanthropists. A philanthropist is someone who is involved in charity and humanitarian work. Their generous contribution to society and the world at large is not only beneficial to their finances and their image, but has a spiritual component too, because their work touches and changes people’s lives. The level of fulfilment here is very high. And it’s the universal law that if you give you will receive. That’s why their legacy lives on many years after they’re gone. That is generational wealth. And it all starts with understanding the money language.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to encounter gorillas will tell you that it is one of the ultimate experiences to be enjoyed in Africa.
It’s sobering to remember that these majestic creatures remain on the verge of extinction – especially the critically endangered mountain gorillas
When the legendary Dian Fossey wrote Gorillas in the Mist back in 1983, mountain gorillas were vanishing at an alarming rate, with only 400 estimated to be left in the world in that year. Thankfully, subsequent gorilla conservation efforts have shown encouraging success, with an estimated over 1 000 in today’s global population.
The only place humans can encounter these gentle giants is in the Virunga Mountains, which span the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Rwanda. While the largest expanse of the range is in the Congo, it is of course currently not the most stable destination to visit. Luckily, there are also plenty of gorillas to meet in Rwanda – a country that has started to emerge as one of the most clean, modern, stable, safe and organised places to visit in Africa.
Since the unspeakable tragedy of the genocide almost 30 years ago, Rwanda has managed to completely reorganise itself and move forward as a united nation. The fact that they have also made English the official language makes visiting the amazing destination even easier.
It may be small, but the ‘ land of a thousand hills and mountains ’ offers the most breathtaking landscapes. Driving from Kigali to the West takes visitors along beautiful curving routes, and when reaching the North, the landscape transforms into a stunning protected jungle with full views of active volcanoes and volcanic craters that have become sparkling blue lakes. It is here that the gorillas – as well as colobus monkeys and plenty of colourful birdlife – can be discovered.
It has been over 10 years since a gorilla has been poached – an incredible feat that is largely thanks to tourism. There are rangers active throughout who can detail every member of every family, and the gorillas are observed and documented every day.
Gorilla trekking in the area starts with a short briefing on the different families early in the morning. For those exploring Volcanoes National Park , the jungle is so thick and dense that the usually mandated 7-metre minimum distance actually can’t be observed, and trekkers get so close to the 300 kg creatures that face masks need to be worn to reduce the spread of any airborne germs that could be harmful to the precious creatures that share 98% of our DNA.
After the briefing, the more active members of the trekking group will start hiking to the furthest family, while the older or less fit will visit those closer by. After walking for about an hour or two, there will be an utterly magical moment when the guide indicates to you to stop, be quiet, put on your mask and let the wonder of a close encounter with a family of gorillas start to unfold.
With nothing between you and the majestic creatures, time really does stand still. From the soul-stirring sound of a silverback beating his chest to the hilarious antics of the juveniles playing and pulling each other’s hair, there is no spectacle quite like it. Contrary to fast-moving and often aggressive chimps, gorillas really do live up to their namesake when it comes to their relaxed, gentle nature. They move quietly and slowly, and being in their presence will take your breath away. Usually, they will spend most of the time sitting still and eating, so you won’t need to move much to remain close to them. Most of the guides have been spending time with them daily for decades, so they can read them very well and will always ensure that both gorillas and trekkers remain comfortable throughout each encounter.
In Rwanda, only one group a day is allowed one hour with the gorillas, so it is a super exclusive experience. Specialists in tailor-made luxury, Atelier Africa Safaris recommends doing two trekking expeditionsvisiting two different gorilla families - if you have the budget and time.
“The first time, the hour passes too fast,” shares Co-founder Timo Denys. “Put your camera away the second time – watch them move and breathe in their amazingly relaxed way, and you’ll enjoy it more.”
In addition to gorillas, other incredible primates to meet in Rwanda are the chimpanzees. Atelier Africa recommends making a base at the incredible One&Only Nyungwe House, tucked between the lush tea plantations of southwest Rwanda on the strikingly biodiverse Nyungwe National Park. Surrounding the luxury resort, the protected park is home to chimpanzees and monkeys, offering an unforgettable opportunity to see these amazing animals up close. At the break of dawn, your expert guide will lead you into the heart of the jungle, on the trail of the chimps. You may spot them gazing down from the fig trees, or even see a troop catapulting through the canopy. Every trek is unique, and the jungle and its inhabitants are full of wonderful surprises!
While gorilla trekking can be enjoyed all year round, Denys personally prefers the wet season. The dense jungle protects from the downfall and it isn’t too muddy (thanks to the ground sucking up the rain), but the mist rises for magical moments in cool, comfortable weather.
Hospitality groups like Singita and Wilderness have moved into the area to help protect its wildlife and uplift its people, and the world-class tourism offering is testament to their success.
In addition to seeing the gentle giants of the jungle up close and soaking in the scenery, Rwanda is also one of the best African destinations for those looking to indulge in luxury accommodation.

In an era marked by escalating environmental concerns and the importance of sustainable development, the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has emerged as a crucial strategy to address the many challenges posed by excessive waste generation and the depletion of natural resources. EPR is a policy approach that forces ‘producers’ to assume a broader responsibility for the lifecycle management of their products, which includes their environmental impact from creation to disposal.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) published its regulations for EPR in terms of Section 18 of the National Environmental Management Waste Act, 2008 (NEMWA) on 5 November 2020. EPR Regulations for all packaging producers and importers were effective from 5 May 2021 and the deadline for compliance was 5 November 2021. Producers are required to either join an existing Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) or establish their own scheme as a way of showing commitment to EPR.
The government has set ambitious collection and recycling targets for the next five years, and this legislation promotes investment in the collection infrastructure, making recycling more accessible for consumers. There are currently various government-approved PRO schemes that deal with waste placed on the South African consumer market, all of which have different guidelines for registration.
EPR, a Circular Economy, and SDGs
Extended Producer Responsibility is a powerful approach to bringing about a more sustainable paradigm of production and consumption that compels producers to take holistic ownership of their products, and stimulates the adoption of circular economy principles, resource efficiency, and innovative designs. This approach not only mitigates waste and pollution, but also encourages consumers to make more informed and sustainable choices. In the broader context of global sustainability, EPR is intricately linked to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, offering a solid strategy to realise responsible production and consumption.
Embracing EPR is a positive step in the direction of creating a more harmonious relationship between human activities and the planet’s well-being.
Sustainability Roadmap Progress –Our Green Journey Wellness Warehouse has registered with the DFFW and the relevant PRO/ EPR schemes. We are currently conducting an EPR compliance audit across our value chain and creating awareness for our own brand suppliers about the importance of EPR.
As an ethical and environmentally friendly brand owner and retailer, we are strongly motivating that all plastic packaging producers, regardless of whether they trigger the 10-tonne per annum plastic packaging threshold, register with a plastics PRO/EPR scheme and participate in effective plastic waste management solutions.
As a business, we are committed to playing our part in driving sustainability
and a circular economy, which means that we adhere to mandatory regulations and ensure that - within the value chain - there is EPR compliance as part of responsible waste management.
Since April 2023, we have engaged the services of Y-Waste as our official waste management service provider for our distribution centre, which includes managing all general waste, recycling, and organic waste responsibly.
