YOUR HEALTH JOURNEY: ARE YOU ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS?

By James White

When asked if they’d like to improve something meaningful in their lives, most people answer with a firm “yes!”

“Do you want a promotion at work?” “Do you want a happy relationship?” “Do you want a healthier body?” “Yes, yes, yes!”

It’s really easy to answer these questions in the affirmative, because we can suspend our knowledge of what would

actually be required to achieve them. You can almost feel what it would be like to be fulfilled at work, to have a relationship that is deeply gratifying, and to live in a body that looks and feels great.

This is where I believe most weight loss plans go wrong. They assume that the biggest hurdle is a person’s desire to want to lose weight. I’ve spent almost my entire professional life in this space, and I can safely say that 99% of the people I’ve worked with have never lacked the desire to change. But there’s a deeper level of questioning needed to determine whether this wanting translates into commitment and actionable steps.

What if, instead of asking, “Do I want to lose weight?”, we started asking questions like, “What has prevented me from losing weight so far?” I’d imagine that the answer to this would mainly revolve around not having enough time. So, isn’t a far better question to ask, “Am I prepared to wake up earlier to exercise?” or “Am I prepared to spend 30 minutes preparing meals?”

Although this is a simple example, it’s quite clear that the questions that need to be answered when determining if someone is ready to embark on a sustainable weight loss journey are those that show them what will actually be required of them in order to make a healthy change.

More importantly - the answers are up to each of us to answer for ourselves. We are the ones who need to do an audit of our lives and point out the things we feel are holding us back. This is an enormous shift away from the prescriptive way that most gyms, apps and programmes interact with their users.

At Best10, we engage with our clients in this way. Our dedicated coaches serve to guide them gently through the highly emotive journey of weight loss, and then to support them and hold them accountable to the decisions they’ve made. This is an incredibly empowering experience for people, and one around which we are proud to have built our entire business.

Are you ready to answer the right questions to take the next step on your health journey?
