Incredible nutritional value The reason we add Superfoods to our diet is for their incredible nutritional value. A diet high in nutrition will give you more energy and vitality. Superfoods added to cereals, fruit salad, snack packs, smoothies or in baking, gives you the assurance of better nutrition. Much of the food available today doesn’t have the nutritional value it could have. Growing methods, processing and transporting can contribute to denaturing food. Adding superfoods to your diet gives you the assurance of better nutrition, anti-oxidant benefits and it can boost energy and immunity.

publisher's letter In our HEALING PLANET issue we can’t stress enough how much difference one person can make towards preserving and protecting the planet. A single mindset has a carry-on effect into other people’s lives and sets up a wave of consciousness that’s infectuous. If you aren’t already recycling and re-using, now is your opportunity. Most green-friendly principles have huge benefits on personal health. More and more research is showing the harmful effects chemicals have on our bodies. A wider range of chemical free options makes it so much easier to make the switch. This extends to home cleaning products and body products too. There are also so many highly effective home recipes you can make with simple ingredients like lavender oil, vinegar and herbs.

well said... WINNING LETTER Thank you to Faith Carter for sending us her letter. Faith has been selected as a winner and will be enjoying a buffet meal for two on us. Greetings, A true measure of the multiple benefits of your well researched magazine in my household is the growing pile of pages lying on my lounge floor, for further follow-up or reference. I thoroughly enjoy the varied content, the principal focus being on various aspects of health. A great deal of thought and planning goes into each issue of this quality printed and beautifully laid out publication. However, when I reach the last page, the entire magazine is in “tatters”, waiting to be consigned to my recycling collection. I can then focus on the varied floor assortment with anticipation. This definitely reflects your success. Thank you so much. It is a thoughtful integral part of your outstanding stores.

Feel like getting creative? Unleash your inner Picasso by popping into Art Jamming in the V&A Waterfront. Take the kids, take your best friend, go by yourself for some me time, or take your colleagues for team building. It’s simple, you pick the canvas size you want and you are good to go. All the paints, brushes, palettes and aprons are included in the price. If you’re unsure about what to paint, the store clerks will show you a few techniques to get you inspired. This is a perfect interactive activity for a rainy day. I took my boyfriend with me who, half way through his masterpiece, started painting a huge area in pink! After making individual paintings, we decided to create a big one together. I painted a ballerina silhouette at the bottom and then the fun began. Dipping our brushes in different colours, we started throwing paint around in the splash room, where we created our first art from as a couple. It’s definitely the most fun I’ve had in a long time and certainly highly recommended. There are five branches in Cape Town and two in Gauteng.
Looking forward to the next issue. Sincerely Faith Carter

Bees make honey for us to enjoy, but they are an integral link in the food chain; without bees the environment would struggle to function and we could not produce the variety of food modern society demands.
HoneyWood Farm WESTERN CAPE
MEET OUR SUPPLIER
HONEYWOOD FARM
Honeywood is a second generation honey farm in the Overberg. The Southern Cape has some of the most pristine fynbos and as a result, a huge variety of floral sources.
“
All honey sold under the Honeywood logo has been produced by my bees and processed on Honeywood”, says owner John Moodie who believes the best honey is honey that is the least processed. That means honey capped in the hive. Honeywood honey is extracted cold, the raw honey settled in stainless steel settling tanks, then bottled in glass jars – as a result there may be small amounts of wax and pollen on opening the lid. Choice grade honey is warmed and strained then settled. Raw honey granulates quickly and many customers refer to it as creamed, because of its fine granulation. Granulated honey can be heated at any stage to restore its liquid state. Ask John about the shelf life of honey and he says, “Do you want it in years, or thousands of years?” If honey is not able to absorb moisture it will last forever with only a slight deterioration over time. If left open it absorbs moisture and its natural yeasts start converting sugars to alcohol resulting in mead. Honeywood
10
honey is accredited badger friendly which means honey badgers are kept away from the hives rather than killed. Although John hires out his bees for pollination he doesn’t expect honey from the pollination service.
Winnie the Pooh is only ‘sort of’ right “And the only reason for being a bee is to make honey. And the only reason for making honey is so I can eat it,” says Pooh. Although bears live for honey this is not the only reason for a bee being a bee. If so, Time magazine wouldn’t have run a leader article in August last year with a bee on the cover. This feature had an opening statement by Bryan Walsh saying: “Americans can thank the Apis Mellifera, better known as everything you need to live life well
the honey bee, for 1 in every 3 mouthfuls of food they’ll eat today.” Yes, bees make honey for us to enjoy, but they are an integral link in the food chain; without bees the environment would struggle to function and we could not produce the variety of food modern society demands.

Honey’s sweet health benefits Honey has been enjoyed by humans for as long we have existed. Bees preceded man by millions of years, so man has always had access to honey. Bees have provided not only honey but wax, alcohol and bee venom. Honey is well known as an energy source with myriad health benefits. Its ant-bacterial qualities are beneficial for sore throats, coughs, cuts, burns, hay fever, digestive health, skin care and even for treating the occasional hangover! Honey is produced by bees from plant nectar processed by worker bees – adding enzymes and transforming it from a disaccharide to a monosaccharide, consisting of mainly fructose and glucose. Physically it is a supersaturated solution with an average pH of 3.9; it is hygroscopic so absorbs moisture. Its colour and density vary according to the nectar source used by the bees, that’s why you find it in a range of varying colours.
Food Safety for Moms-to-Be An FDA warning: Don’t feed a baby honey - at least for the first year. Honey can contain Clostridium botulinum spores. Infant botulism is caused by consuming these spores, which then grow in the intestines and release toxin.” However: also from the FDA “Infant botulism has been diagnosed in most U.S. states and in every populated continent except Africa (1. Haim M. Solomon and Timothy Lilly, Jr.)”
Bees in crisis Bees are under stress as new diseases threaten them. At the same time, pollination demands are increasing as more crops are planted that need bees to pollinate them. Yet bee forage is being systematically reduced as man develops traditional areas of forage into concrete jungles. Pesticides, used to grow pest free crops, are often applied incorrectly and without consideration for foraging bees. This results in severe colony loss. Monoculture crops
are becoming more common which means a more boring diet for the honeybees. What’s more, debate is rife about other factors that might be affecting bees: this includes climate change, radio masts, polluted atmospheres and GM crops. All of these impact on the future of the honeybee in various ways - ’research is necessary to determine the extent these factors are detrimental to honeybees.’
GETAWAY ON HONEYWOOD FARM
What can you do for bees and the environment •
Plant bee forage – a list of bee friendly plants is available from SANBI at the Kirtensbosch Plant Fair from 12-13 April 2014. Try and plant these.
•
Keep your own bees. Urban beekeeping is a wonderful idea but follow the by-laws in your area and be aware that bees can become aggressive and dangerous to humans and animals. There is no such thing as a ‘tame’ bee.
•
If you can’t keep your own bees adopt a Honeywood beehive for a year. By adopting a beehive for R2500 you will know that you are protecting an active colony in a pristine environment, you will have your name on a colony, be given a certificate, 12 bottles of honey, and become a friend of Honeywood farm with reduced rates in our cottages. Details are on the Honeywood Farm web site.(www.honeywoodfarm.co.za)
•
Avoid using dangerous pesticides in your home and garden. Especially do not kill swarms which may arrive and need to be removed. Beekeepers may be contacted through the Western Cape Beekeeper’s Association to remove hives.
•
Support local beekeepers by buying local honey. Buy South African.
Drive out of Cape Town and stay over at Honeywood Farm for a rejuvenating weekend. Just past Swellendam (280km) outside Cape Town, Honeywood Farm borders the wild and wonderful Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve and World heritage site of the Bosemansbos Wilderness Area. This is a nature lover’s paradise where you can hike, mountain bike, bird watch, ride horses and swim in rivers and pools. Honeywood offers a variety of accommodation from a Woodcutter’s Lodge, to hideaway cottages tucked away in the hills and even has camping options. It’s an ideal getaway for romantic couples, family trips, team building groups, conferences or intimate weddings. Honeywood has been in the Moodie family since 1817, and has unique authenticity as a place with soul. The Moodie family love sharing their special place and really care about their guests. At Honeywood you can choose to relax completely or to be adventurous. To book, or for more information log on to www.honeywoodfarm.co.za Contact John on 083 270 4035 or the office 028 722 1823

“I think the next generation would like us to do the best we can to clean up after ourselves; to make sure seafood in the long term is safe to consume; and we are not polluting the brains of the children to come.” Philippe Grandjean
FISHING FOR
THE FUTURE
Leaving fish out your diet when it is such an important source of Omega-3 seems such a waste yet what do we do, firstly about overfishing and ocean depletion, and secondly about mercury pollution?
did you know? Over 25% of all the world’s fish stocks are either overexploited or depleted. Another 52% is fully exploited and in imminent danger of overexploitation (maximum sustainable production levels) and collapse. This means a total of almost 80% of the world’s fisheries are fully- to over-exploited, depleted, or in a state of collapse. Worldwide about 90% of the stocks of large predatory fish are already gone.
E
vidence shows, that the dangerous pollutant mercury, is accumulating in more habitats and wildlife than previously thought. According to the National Wildlife Foundation, mercury can “adversely alter the neurological and reproductive systems of humans and wildlife.” But, according to the U.S, National Fisheries Institute, there has never been a confirmed case of mercury toxicity in the United States through eating commercial seafood. On the other hand, many people die from complications related to a lack of the Omega-3 fatty acid commonly found in fish. “Rather than removing fish from your diet, we need to eliminate mercury pollution from our global environment so our fish don’t get polluted in the first place”, says a leading environmentalist. One report says about 70 percent of seafood have relatively low levels of
12
helping you live life well
mercury and can be eaten regularly. Fish like salmon, haddock, herring and sardines, are considered ‘low mercury fish.’ So is shrimp. But swordfish, tuna and lobster are believed to have mercury concentrations that commonly exceed safe levels. Professor Charles Driscoll, in his report, Sources to Seafood: Mercury Pollution in the Marine Environment maintains that Mercury levels in fish from the Atlantic Ocean are dropping, but it’s not the same case for fish from the Pacific Ocean. “The level of mercury in the Pacific Ocean is projected to increase by 50 percent by 2050, if current pollution trends continue unabated,” said Richard Gutierrez, executive director of Ban Toxics, a Filipino organisation which is part of the Zero Mercury coalition, “This is a wake-up call for all governments to stem the rising tide of mercury pollution and finalise a strong treaty.”
eatwell
healthy foodmarket
Although, even with stricter pollution controls, scientists say it could still take decades, even centuries, before some parts of the deep ocean will see major reductions in mercury levels. “If we continue as we have been going with marine pollution, with time this is going to make it more and more difficult to find safe seafood,” Philippe Grandjean, chair of environmental medicine at the University of Southern Denmark and professor at Harvard School of Public Health. Besides the problem of mercury, we have the issue of overfishing. Overfishing is simply catching too much fish for the system to support, it constitues a non-sustainable use of the oceans. This is unnecessary on a global scale we have enough fishing capacity to cover at least four planets the size of earth. But worldwide, fishing fleets catch two to three times more than our oceans can sustainably support. Besides overcapacity, many fishing methods are unsustainable and negatively impact the basic functioning of our marine ecosystems. Unselective fishing practices and unsuitable apparatus can cause major destruction for the non-target species. Practices like trawling result in extensive bycatches or discards that constitute damage and waste. Marine mammals, sharks, sea birds, and non-commercially viable fish species are also overexploited, killed as bycatch and discarded (up to 80%). As Dr. Daniel Pauly says: “The big fish, the bill fish, the groupers, the big things will be gone. It is happening now. If things go unchecked, we’ll have a sea full of little horrible things that nobody wants to eat. We might end up with a marine junkyard dominated by plankton.” Figures published by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization show that: 52% of fish stocks are fully exploited 20% are moderately exploited 17% are overexploited 7% are depleted 1% is recovering from depletion It’s not just species we are losing but entire ecosystems and at risk of total ocean collapse. This has a ripple effect and effects the millions of people who derive their income from the ocean. One example comes from Newfoundland, Canada. In 1992, a thriving cod fishing industry came
to a sudden stop when, at the beginning of the fishing season, no cod appeared. Decades of overfishing mismanagement resulted in almost 40,000 people losing their livelihood and an ecosystem in a complete state of decay. Twenty years later fishermen are still waiting for the cod to return and communities are still suffering from the lack of this economic resource. If we act now the effects of overfishing are still reversible. Getting fish stocks to recover – depending on what they are, could take from a decade to a century. This can be done by implementing safe catch limits; preventing unintentional killing and disposal of fish, crustaceans and other oceanic life not part of the target catch; habitat protection of coral areas, delicate sea floors and the spawning and nursing grounds of fish. Although we need international law to underpin the reversal of the situation, individuals can do their bit by being informed on local fishing situations; Knowing which fish are on the danger list; picking fish with the lowest impact; and making other people aware of the problem. To find out which fish are on the red list go to http:// www.wwfsassi.co.za.
bottles, food storage containers and take your own bag to the supermarket.
4. KEEP BEACHES LITTER FREE Take your litter home; beachside bins that aren’t emptied timeously often spill their contents onto the beach. Organise or join local beach clean-up’s. Refrain from disturbing marine life – keep rocks and coral intact.
5. CONSUME WITH CONSIDERATION Avoid buying purchases that support harmful practices. Products like coral jewelry and shark products may be obtained in a way that harms sea life. Also be aware that health supplements with ocean ingredients need to be checked for sustainable sourcing practices.
6. CHANGE TO BIO-DEGRADABLE & CHEMICAL FREE Chemicals from cleaning agents and cosmetics infiltrate the waterways and cause damage to oceans and rivers. Make a stand and ban all harmful chemicals from your home. Buy organic products or products produced without the use of harmful pesticides.
7. CHECK YOUR PET PRODUCTS
8 SMALL STEPS TO PRESERVE OUR OCEANS
Remember to check the ingredients on your pet food products. Be aware that products like cat litter can contain pathogens harmful to sea life. Leave wild-caught saltwater fish out your aquarium.
1. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
8. SUPPORT ORGANISATIONS THAT SUPPORT CONSERVATION
Reduce your energy consumption with a thought to reducing the effects of climate change on the ocean. Start practices like walking or cycling instead of driving, setting up a car pool, switching off the power whenever possible, bundling up instead of heating up, switching off your geyser when you go away.
2. MAKE SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD CHOICES Know which species are sustainable; which have been overexploited or have threatened habitats. Be aware of where you source your fish and whether it is fished under licensed or poached.
3. CUT DOWN ON PLASTIC Use re-useable containers. Many plastics end up in the ocean and entangle and kill countless marine life. Recycle drinking www.wellnesswarehouse.com
Whether through donations or through volunteer work, you will find many organisations that need assistance.

Actor and activist Alec Baldwin says, “Please choose vegetarianism, do it for the animals, do it for the environment and do it for health.”
Reasons to go
VEGETARIAN
Much debate surrounds the issue of whether constitutionally, humans are meant to be vegetarian or not.
F
or some, it’s a humanitarian choice, for others it’s all about health. Sir Paul McCartney poignantly said, “If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.”
Yet evidence shows our ancestors were eating meat up to 2.5 million years ago and many believe meat is a necessary part of diet. There is the argument that our stomachs don’t have the same complex intestinal tracts most leaf-eaters posses, but then again our teeth are designed to handle both meat and non-meat diets. More important though are the issues of environmental impact, cruelty to animals and health implications.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
did you know?
Although banned in European countries, many cattle growers rely on hormones like Oestradiol-17, Trenbolone Acetate, Zeranol and melengestrol. Apart from making mammals fat, according to the Brest Cancer Fund, Zeranol is a powerful estrogenic chemical, demonstrated by its ability to stimulate growth and proliferation of human breast tumor cells at potencies similar to those of the natural hormone estradiol and the known carcinogen Diethylstilbestrol. In other words, it may be strongly linked to breast cancer rates.
On an environmental note, British ‘eco warrior’ Simon Fairlie famously argued that rearing livestock is essential for increasing biodiversity and creating a truly sustainable world. A report from the United Nations called Livestock’s Long Shadow says meat production is one of the most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems at every scale from local to global. Eating meat causes almost 40% more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cars, trucks and planes in the world combined. This report stresses that the meat industry should be a major policy focus when looking at land degradation; climate change and air pollution; water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
HUMANITARIAN TRUTHS None of the above facts surpass the issue of cruelty to animals. The majority of meat on supermarket shelves comes from animals reared in factory farms, crammed by the thousands into various
14
everything you need to live life well
confinement like windowless sheds, wire cages and gestation crates. Anyone watching ‘Meet your Meat’ on YouTube is likely to be shocked into becoming vegetarian. Narrator, actor and activist Alec Baldwin, calls the factory farm, humanity’s cruelest invention. Genetically manipulated chickens fed artificially to shorten growing time, and immobilized in cages means sometimes their bones are so weak they start hemorrhaging before making it to slaughter. Severe anxiety and stress causes them to start pecking each other in despair, because of this their beaks are removed. Some are scalded alive in feather removal tanks. Footage shows cattle branded without painkillers, and beaten with rods when required to move. Growth hormones make pigs grow so quickly, they become lame when legs still undeveloped, cannot support their unnatural bulk. For the same reasons, 40% of dairy cows are lame by the time they are sent to slaughter. Alec Baldwin says, “Please choose vegetarianism, do it for the animals, do it for the environment and do it for health.” These animals will never raise families, root in the soil or do anything else natural and important to them. They won’t ever feel the warmth of the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until they are loaded onto trucks for slaughter. If you are still eating meat, find out where your meat comes from and the kind of conditions animals are being reared. At the very least, choose pasture reared and free range options.

MAGICAL MARSEILLE
by Roddy Louther
With eco issues top of mind, our Healing Planet issue has Roddy Louther perfecting his Bouillabaisse recipe before the ingredients end up on the red list. Before making your Bouillabaisse, remember to consider your choice of fish and to choose an ethical supplier. We follow Roddy to Marseille, the birthplace of Bouillabaisse.
N
o one ever leaves Paris willingly, the saying goes. I was no different. It felt like I was being torn from the teary embrace of Audrey Tautou. However, sunny Marseille beckoned with a bowl of comforting Bouillabaisse. While eating, it set me wondering about our local fish stocks in Southern Africa. The Eurorail bullet train left Gare Du Nord on a sunny morning. Ahead of me was a three-hour journey through spectacular French countryside. I made for the small on board bar, and watched the passengers ordering their standard bottles of Sauterne, foie gras and an assortment of cheeses and condiments before sitting down to enjoy the scenery. An elderly man wearing a beret topping his tilled, sun burnt face sauntered in, followed by a greying Labrador. He asked for an espresso and a glass of Pernod. “Ah!” I remember thinking, “I have to try that sometime.” They settled a few tables away staring out the window as I did. Sleepy villages were punctuated by wheat fields glowing gold under moody skies and row upon row of vines. The France of Van Gogh, Monet and Charles Aznavour sped by too fast. I wondered if the old man felt as cheated as I did. After a while the terrain changed dramatically, becoming mountainous and rugged. Our train snaked through valleys and more than a few tunnels. Through the open window, the air became cooler and sweeter. The Mediterranean, I sensed, was close. I got into a taxi and handed the driver my hotel address. A small Olympic Marseille flag hung proudly from his rear-view mirror. Scenes from The French Connection and Luc Besson’s 1998 film, Taxi, played out in front of my eyes in glorious 3D. I had just arrived in the underbelly of France, Marseille, its second largest city. If Paris is the glamorous, cultural and financial capital, Marseille is its five o’clock shadow. Paris is chic, and Marseille, shock. To the French, Marseille is the other mistress. The two cities look and feel so very different,
18
but I knew they needed one another - each being the others yardstick. As we sped along a winding, narrow, line-less road drawn between coarse limestone cliffs, Fadi, the taxi driver excitedly announced sight of the big blue. He was of North African descent - “Berber? Algerian?” I asked. “Yes, yes.” He confirmed, taking his eyes off the road. Moorish influences were everywhere. He was eager to practice his tattered English, and warned me not to walk around alone at night, something I had been told more than once. Marseille’s intricate and volatile gangland has made it perhaps Europe’s most dangerous city. It is regarded as an important port of entry for drug smugglers and human trafficking gangs amongst other dubious activity. Finally we arrived at the picturesque Old Port. Tired, newly painted fishing boats idled inside a small harbour sheltered on three sides by sand coloured buildings with tiled roofs. The place was alive – weathered fishermen peddled their catches to picky browsers. I made a mental note to return there. Imagine my surprise when I found my hotel was opposite the road from the market, and I couldn’t believe my luck when I opened the windows of my room and found the most extravagant view of the Old Port. A gentle breeze, salty and tinged with the smell of fresh fish, wafted through the bay window. Below, a magnificent glut of fish, most still alive, was on display for the voracious Marseillais discerning tastes. Later, as I strolled passed tables laden with the fruits of the sea; my mind drifted to Kalk Bay Harbour and I wondered why we are so starved for choice in South Africa. Are our fish stocks that dangerously depleted? Surely, I thought, with a coastline as long, rich and diverse as ours, there’s plenty to go around. Mediterranean people have strong fishing cultures, and appear to live in harmony with both the sea, and each other. Today, we have a situation in South Africa, where fishing licenses are both taken away and awarded seemingly with very little study. That evening, I explored the Old Port area; there is much on offer in the restaurants of Marseille. While my host urged me to try a everything you need to live life well
costly Steak with Truffles, my mind was set; and at €22.00 the Bouillabaisse’s Provencal flavours merged indelibly. At last I could savour France, or at least part of it, one slow spoon at a time. Bouillabaisse is a dish steeped in history and the Marseillais ode to the Mediterranean. It is their grand contribution to French gastronomy and the world. At least three types of fish are used – originally the fishermen boiled the boney rockfish they couldn’t sell in a large cauldron. In about the seventeenth century tomatoes were added when introduced to Europe from the Americas. Over the years the simple Bouillabaisse has acquired finesse with the addition of expensive ingredients such as saffron, langoustines, lobsters, octopus and an array of shellfish. And with the French Diaspora, colonial influences furthered its universal appeal. Fishing is a dangerous occupation, and more so around the Cape of Storms. It seems only right that one should treat the catches hauled to land with respect. I tried to gather a good selection of fish, but sadly that proved almost impossible. It is becoming harder to find coastal species like Hottentots, Steentjies, Harders and our own red fish varieties like Red Stumpnose and Red Roman at supermarkets and fish vendors. What is happening? I know these fish are caught daily, but maybe they are sold on for export. If so, I wish to express my displeasure, most humbly to the honorable minister in charge. So, I guess my own version of this classic French dish will have to be made of a more modest array of indigenous fish and shellfish, fresh, as if swimming of course. Bon Appétit!

RECIPE
Cape Style Bouillabaisse I am highly grateful to Fish 4 Africa for their incredibly fresh supply of fish and shellfish. They are friendly, accommodating and very knowledgeable too. It’s always nice to use a minimum of three varieties of fish and any shellfish and crustaceans. I chose the freshest Hake, Red Snapper and Angel Fish to go with the Mussels, Scallops, Prawns, Crayfish and Mozambican Crab. Feel free to use whatever you can find. Ask your fishmonger to fillet the fish and package the fish heads and bones separately.
CRUSTACEANS (DEVEINED): PRAWNS, CRAYFISH AND MOZAMBICAN CRAB (LEGS ONLY). 1 BOUQUET GARNI - ITALIAN PARSLEY, ROSEMARY, 2 BAY LEAVES, DILL AND CELERY LEAVES. SALT AND BLACK PEPPER 1 TOT (50ML) OF PERNOD RICARD

Making the stock: Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy pot over mediumhigh heat. Add the onion, chopped celery, leeks, fennel and sauté until just brown, 5 to 10 minutes. Add the mashed garlic, fennel seeds and cayenne pepper and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes. Add the fish heads and bones to the pot. Pour in a cup of dry white wine, and cover with water. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour. Remove the pot from the heat. Carefully pick the bones from the pot and discard. Pass the liquid through a strainer, pressing on the residue to release all the stock. Allow to cool, then pass the stock through cheesecloth to purify further. Making the Bouillabaise: Add the saffron (if using), orange zest, chopped tomatoes. Place it back onto the boil then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.

Add the crab legs followed 5 minutes later by the crayfish and prawns. Cook for 3 more minutes. Add mussels, and fish fillets. Cook for 4 minutes. Finally add the Scallops, and stir in the Pernod Ricard. Simmer until the crab, crayfish and prawns are bright orange, the mussels have opened and the fish is poached through but still together. Discard any shells that have remained closed. Serve from the pot, sprinkled with the parsley and topped with crusty bread.

Never boil the broth; this makes it bitter. Always bring to a boil then reduce heat to simmer. If you can, add the crab body and crayfish heads, to the fish heads and bones when making the stock. Ask for your fish to be filleted with the skin on, this keeps the meat from falling apart. If you are using Monkfish, add it first as it is more firm than the others. To me, though optional, the orange zest and juice, saffron and Pernod are all absolutely essential to this dish. Serve with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, toasted Ciabatta slices rubbed with garlic and drizzled with olive oil.

M
aking your own muesli means you can add an abundance of highly nutritious and energising ingredients of your choice. Here are 3 of our favourite recipes using ingredients that maximise taste, texture and nutrition. Combine this with one of two dairy free additions and end up with breakfast bliss.
RISE & SHINE OVERNIGHT MUESLI (raw) This is a standard muesli variation that is made the night before.
INGREDIENTS MAKES 4 PORTIONS 2 CUPS OF ROLLED OATS (GLUTEN-FREE) 3 CUPS OF UNSWEETENED COCONUT MILK 2 TBSP CHIA SEEDS 2 TBSP HEMP SEEDS 1/3 CUP CURRANTS ½ CUP PUMPKIN SEEDS 2 TBSP UNSWEETENED COCONUT FLAKES A SQUEEZE OF FRESH LEMON (THIS BREAKS DOWN THE PHYTIC ACID ON OATS)
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Refrigerate overnight. In the morning before serving, top with any extra ingredients you may wish, try raw cacao, extra coconut flakes and sliced banana.
BIRCHER MUESLI (raw) Makes 4 portions This healthy variation has oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit soaked in liquid. It is filling, highly nutritious and most importantly, easy to make.
INGREDIENTS 1 APPLE, UNPEELED, QUARTERED, CORE REMOVED 1 CUP ROLLED OATS 1/2 CUP APPLE JUICE 1/2 CUP FAT-FREE NATURAL YOGHURT, PLUS EXTRA TO SERVE ¼ TSP GROUND CINNAMON 1/4 CUP FLAKED ALMONDS 1/4 CUP WALNUTS 2 TABLESPOONS PUMPKIN SEEDS
Stir half the nut mixture through the muesli with 1/2 cup of yoghurt if the muesli has been soaking overnight. If the muesli has been soaking for 1 hour, add a little extra yoghurt as desired. Sprinkle with the remaining nut mixture and serve.
QUINOA AND BUCKWHEAT GRANOLA (vegan and gluten-free) Makes 6 portions This muesli has an incredible crunch, and is highly flavourful. It might seem strange to start off with uncooked quinoa and buckwheat but that’s what makes the crunch so good. It has the perfect ratio of nuts to grain and is not too sweet.
INGREDIENTS 1 CUP WHOLE ROLLED OATS (CERTIFIED GLUTEN FREE) 1 CUP BUCKWHEAT (GROATS OR UNCOOKED HOT CEREAL MIX IS ALSO FINE) 1/3 CUP QUINOA (USE REGULAR OR RED OR A MIX OF THE TWO) 2 TBSP CHIA SEEDS 3/4 CUP RAW ALMONDS, CHOPPED ROUGHLY 1/4 CUP RAW PUMPKIN SEEDS 1/4 CUP RAW SUNFLOWER SEEDS 1/4 CUP RAW WALNUTS, CHOPPED ROUGHLY 1/4 CUP SHREDDED COCONUT 2 TSP CINNAMON 1/3 CUP DRIED CRANBERRIES 1/3 CUP RAISINS 1/2 CUP MAPLE SYRUP 1/2 CUP COCONUT OIL, MELTED
In large mixing bowl, combine the first 4 ingredients. Then add the chopped nuts, seeds and coconut. Mix together. Add the melted coconut oil and maple syrup. Keep mixing until everything is evenly blended. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. Tip the mixture onto the sheet. Bake for one hour at 100 degrees Celcius. Once it has cooled, separate the clusters and let it crumble.
LEAVE OUT THE MILK Rather than using milk or yoghurt with your muesli, try these two mouthwatering variations instead. Vanilla yoghurt is made from coconut, and caramel nut nectar has mesquite powder to make it extra creamy.
VANILLA YOGURT (dairy-free) Makes 1 portion
INGREDIENTS 1/2 CUP COCONUT WATER 1 CUP COCONUT MEAT 1/2 TEASPOON VANILLA EXTRACT
Put the coconut water into your blender and ¼ of the coconut meat. Start blending on high speed slowly adding the rest of the coconut meat. After a while it will thicken and get creamy.
TIP BESIDES HAVING THIS WITH YOUR MUESLI, YOU CAN ALSO JUST DRINK IT AS IS. IT’S GREAT FOR KIDS. YOU CAN ALSO ADD A FRUIT, PUT IT IN A ZOKU AND GET DELICIOUS ICE CREAM.
CARAMEL NUT NECTAR (raw, gluten-free, dairy-free and paleo friendly) Makes 4 portions
INGREDIENTS ¼ CUP CASHEWS ¼ CUP MACADAMIAS ½ TSP VANILLA BEAN POWDER 2 TSP MESQUITE POWDER ¼ TSP HIMALAYAN SALT ½ CUP WATER ⅔ CUP ICE 1 CUP MEDJOOL PITTED DATES
Put all the ingredients in the blender, except the dates. Blend until smooth and everything is mixed together. Add the dates a few at a time and keep blending until it thickens into a creamy consistency.
Coarsely grate the apple. Mix the grated apple, rolled oats, apple juice, yoghurt and cinnamon in a bowl until well combined. Cover and place in the fridge for 1 hour or overnight. Combine the flaked almonds, walnuts and pumpkin seeds in a small bowl.

7 FABULOUS INGREDIENTS 1. Buckwheat Buckwheat is a gluten free, nourishing and energizing food with a good source of easily digestible proteins. High protein buckwheat flour is being studied for benefits related to reducing plasma cholesterol, body fat, and cholesterol gallstones. New evidence has found buckwheat may be helpful in the management of diabetes. With a glycemic index of 54, it lowers blood sugars more slowly than rice or wheat products. It’s also great for digestion. Buckwheat cleans and strengthens the intestines and improves appetite, it’s good at drawing out excess fluid from swollen areas of the body. Buckwheat is a warming yang food.
2. Oats Oats are a great source of soluble fibre that helps eliminate cholesterol and toxins in the body. They’re a good source of manganese contributing to bone health. High fibre means oats make you fill full for longer and guard against blood sugar fluctuations.
3. Coconut milk
5. Chia seeds
Coconut contains lauric acid which is a natural antibacterial and antiviral and can play a role in supporting the immune system. Coconut milk has medium-chain fatty acids easily assimilated by the body and is helpful in maintaining a balanced weight.
Another source of soluble fibre, these little seeds are loaded with nutrients. Chia contains of Omega-3s (even more than flaxseed) the essential fatty acid that’s been shown to improve digestion, hair and skin health, mood, heart health, brain function and cholesterol levels. They’re full of protein and calcium too.
4. Cinnamon Cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar, making it a great choice for diabetics and hypoglycemics. It reduces LDL cholesterol levels (LDL is the harmful cholesterol) and has natural anti-infectious compounds. Studies show cinnamon to be effective against ulcer-causing H. pylori bacteria and other pathogens. It reduces pain linked to arthritis, may reduce the proliferation of cancer cells. It’s been proven effective for menstrual pain and good for boosting fertility. Cinnamon contains a natural chemical called cinnamaldehyde, which increases the hormone progesterone and decreases testosterone production in women, helping to balance hormones. It is currently being studied for its benefits for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, and meningitis, due to its ability to reduce chronic inflammation.
6. Hemp seeds Hemp seeds are a complete vegetarian protein and full of B vitamins (important for energy and mood). They’re also anti-inflammatory, blood sugar regulating and keep you feeling full.
7. Pumpkin seeds Pumpkin seeds are a great source of vegetarian protein, Omega-3s and zinc, (good for immunity) they are also recommended for the prevention of osteoporosis and for prostrate health.

did you know? Soaking grains makes them more digestible and allows better absorption of minerals and vitamins. Soaking oats neutralizes phytic acid, the ‘anti-nutrient’, in the outer layer of the oat. Because phytic acid can block absorption of important nutrients, too much of this in our diets can lead to mineral deficiencies and poor bone density.

Recipe for EGGS BACONNAISE A firm favourite with The Real Meal Revolution, this is the Banting man’s version of Egg’s Benedict, but better. Instead of using butter for the hollandaise, you use the fat from frying the bacon. Whoever thought of using bacon fat to make mayonnaise should be knighted. As you embark on Banting, you might find yourself shedding a tear or two for all the bacon fat you’ve drained onto paper towel over the years. This recipe is perfect for a special occasion or perhaps a good ‘healing’ meal on a morning after a night before because it takes slightly longer than a quick flash in the pan and the methods are slightly more complex. You will need time.
EGGS BACONNAISE Serves 4
INGREDIENTS 2 SMALL AUBERGINES, GRATED ON THE LARGE GRAIN 300G MELTED BUTTER 250G STREAKY BACON 12 EGGS 1 LEMON 1 TBSP STRONG DIJON MUSTARD SALT AND PEPPER VINEGAR
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Soak the aubergine in 1 tbsp salt and leave to drain for 30 minutes before ringing aubergine out and shaping it into large cakes. In a heavy-based saucepan, fry the aubergine cakes on a low heat with 100g of butter for about 30 minutes, turning carefully now and then. Place a small pot of water on the stovetop. Give it a splash of vinegar and bring to a boil. Fry your bacon rashers on a medium heat (so the fat doesn’t burn) in the remaining 200g of butter until crispy. Remove from the heat, draining the excess fat back into the pan. Separate four eggs and place the yolks, lemon juice and mustard in a heat-proof bowl on top of the boiling vinegar and water (this is called a double boiler). Whisk vigorously until it becomes light and fluffy.
6.
While whisking continuously, slowly pour the melted butter and bacon fat into the egg mixture. Be careful not to pour it in too fast as the mixture will split. Once you have poured in all the butter and bacon fat and it has emulsified, your Baconnaise is ready and can be seasoned and set aside. 7. Reduce the water temperature to a light simmer. Swirl the water to create a medium-strength circular current. Break the remaining eggs into a small bowl and tip them, one by one, into the heart of the “whirl pool”. Allow them to poach for about three or four minutes or until soft. 8. When they’re cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the eggs from the water and dab them with a dry cloth or paper towel before serving. 9. By this time, the rostis should be nice and crispy. Remove them from the pan and dab them on a paper towel. 10. Place a rosti on each plate, top each one with bacon, then two eggs and finally, the baconnaise.
TIPS A TIP FOR THE BEST POACHED EGGS - USE THE FRESHEST YOU CAN FIND, THEY HOLD THEIR SHAPE THE BEST. A TIP FOR MAKING BACONNAISE OR HOLLANDAISE - IF THE MIXTURE GETS TOO THICK, ADD A FEW DROPS OF HOT WATER. IF IT STARTS SPLITTING, DO THE SAME AND KEEP WHISKING. IF IT SPLITS COMPLETELY, START AGAIN WITH THE LEMON, EGG YOLK AND MUSTARD AND USE THE SPLIT SAUCE AS THE BUTTER IN THE FIRST ROUND – POURING IT IN SLOWLY.
Founded in August 2009 Richard Bosman Quality Cured Meats is a small factory committed to producing excellent cured meats using traditional methods. After 5 successful years running the Deli in Hermanus, owner Richard Bosman decided to set up a charcuterie to produce local artisan cured meats. With input from fleischmeister Walter Haller, the factory uses traditional salting and drying techniques to create special and unique products. The two most important ingredients in the process are the meat and time. The company has developed special relationships with farmers like Charlie Crowther in the Hemel and Aarde valley outside Hermanus to source the best quality pasture reared animals. Charlie is cross breeding Duroc and Large White pigs specifically to their requirements. They are raised in pastures and their diet is supplemented with acorns during the last month of their breeding. They are de wormed but given no other medication or growth hormones. Due to their active lifestyle the quality and flavour of the meat is superior however this does require a significantly longer breeding time. Production using these pigs started in August 2010. Once the meat is slaughtered it is brought to the factory and processed within 24 hours. Our philosophy is to do as little as possible to the meat and rather to rely on the quality of the raw material and let time do the rest. The meat first goes into our salting room to be salted by hand. Depending on the product, the meat will remain here for anything from 7 days to one month. After salting, the meat is hung up in our drying room and will cure for 2 – 12 months depending on the product. The temperature and humidity is controlled at all times to ensure the best results as well as consistency of the product. All our salamis are made using natural casings and none of them contain GDLs. Unlike most commercial bacons, ours is dry cured and never injected with brine or phosphates. The result is a more intense flavour and the bacon cooks and crisps up quickly as there is no added moisture that needs to evaporate. Our range includes the herby real bacon, smoked honey bacon and streaky bacon. AVAILABLE AT WELLNESS WAREHOUSE KLOOF STREET

W
hether your goal is to up your energy by 40%; to get a six pack; recover from an injury; embrace longevity; feel ten years younger; start loving your body or all of the above, you need a plan and you need a starting point. Most people live life at a small percentage of their peak capacity without paying attention, or without knowing how to maximise their full potential. The answer isn’t to start randomly popping supplements, tackling a stringent workout, switching to a different diet or following a haphazard scheme. If you cover every area of your body and lifestyle with a prepared and intelligent plan, you will get incredible results with long-term sustainability.
1. START WITH AN ASSESSMENT Do a mental body scan listing any ailments and health issues you have. Are you constipated, does your gut hurt, do you have joint pains, is your back sore are your hormones imbalanced or your immunity low? It’s easy to get tested for all kinds of potential imbalances. From there, you have an idea of what needs to be worked on. Do a complete test for a true picture of where your body is. Look at any illness that may be present in your family history and make a special effort to double check on anything you may be prone to.
See if any of the below issues need addressing: •
• • • •
Weight and body composition, quality of nutrition appetite and relationship with food Digestion, bloatedness, heartburn Energy, activity level Mind, concentration, memory Emotions, mood swings, anxiety, depression, fear
• • • • • • •
Immune system, frequency of illness Muscle, joint, arthritis, inflammation Skin, acne, eczema, hair loss Heart, chest pain, breathlessness Lungs, breathing, asthma, bronchitis Sleep quality, insomnia Use of cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, laxatives, prescription drugs, over-thecounter med’s, addictions etc
into long and short term goals. Longer term goals could be, make my life less stressful, lose 5 kilo’s, find a lasting solution for eczema. Short term goals could be, wake up early every morning and weigh myself; exercise; take a daily supplement; drink a green juice. Write up a daily action plan to match your goals. Your first Monday agenda could look like this.
For peace of mind, have all the tests you need to have. These are some you might want to consider:
MONDAY: early yoga class, 10 minute meditation, smoothie with Omegas. Get a cholesterol check.
1. Gynaecological check for women and prostrate for men 2. Full Blood Count 3. Thyroid Function 4. Fasting Lipogram (Cholesterol) 5. Fasting Insulin 6. Fasting Glucose 7. Stress Hormones, eg Cortisol, DHEA, 8. Hormone profile (women) 9. Vitamin D3 10. Blood Pressure/heart rate
Once you have finished your reboot (which could take from 4 to 8 weeks) give yourself one day a week where you don’t have to exercise, where you can drink coffee or take a break from your routine.
2. SET UP A PLAN Use your list of ailments or complaints, the results of your tests and your personal objectives to set up a firm plan with goals and a time-line to achieve everything you want to. You might want to purchase a dedicated notebook to record everything properly. If you track your goals and have a programme for how and what you want to achieve, you are much more likely to succeed. You could also use an app, a wall chart, google calendar but whatever you do, keep a record somewhere.
3. MAKE YOUR SPACE SUPPORTIVE This is a very important step. Remove everything that doesn’t support your new programme. Whether you have to give away all the chocolate biscuits in the pantry, cancel DSTV, throw out your ashtrays, park your espresso machine at a friend’s house, do whatever you need to make sure all the temptations and distractions are gone. Remember, it’s not forever; you can replace some of the items after your reboot. Once you have cleared everything away, get everything you need to make your goals as easy as possible. Clear a space for exercise, get new running shoes, stock your pantry with healthy food, buy the supplements you need, find a meditation spot, service your juicer. Be ready and prepared in a way that makes you excited.
Divide your plan into a framework that makes sense to you. You might divide it

4. ELIMINATE POSSIBLE ALLERGENS Many people have food intolerances or allergies they aren’t aware of. You might be sensitive to wheat but because you eat it everyday you don’t realise that feeling bloated everyday is because of wheat. It’s a great idea to remove all the common food culprits and see how your body feels. Start with wheat, gluten, dairy and soy. Ironman triathlete Ben Greenfield suggests eating from the Auto Immune Paleo Guide. This eliminates almost every potential food sensitivity trigger including grains, beans, dairy, eggs, nuts, spices and nightshades. While on a cleanse, use probiotics and digestive enzymes to build up your gut.
5. DETOX YOUR LIVER Everyone has exposed their bodies to toxins in some form; this could be pollutants, prescription drugs, alcohol,
pharmaceuticals and more. Giving your liver some support is highly beneficial. There are two detox pathways in the liver known as Phase 1 and Phase 2 pathways. Find a natural supplement that will enhance your body’s ability to remove toxins from the liver. Consider using a heavy metal detoxification formula, a full spectrum antioxidant and a green supplement. You can also consider taking activated charcoal or magnesium oxide oral powder.
6. RESTORE YOUR ADRENALS Your adrenals produce compounds like cortisol and adrenaline. It’s easy for these glands to burn out when subjected to constant stress. Cortisol is released as a response to stress. When it’s low it means your body is struggling to cope with all the stress you have. Eat high nutrient foods, make sure you are completely destressed at least once a day. Try meditation,
swimming, guided relaxation or yoga. Avoid skipping meals and then binging. Look for supplements to support the adrenals like astralagus, licorice root, Vitamin B complex and L-Tyrosine. Use Himalayan sea salt to restore minerals that tend to be depleted when cortisol is low.
7. SAVE YOUR BRAIN Cell phones, WiFi signals, wireless routers, herbicides, pesticides, pollution, insomnia are just some of the factors that can create brain inflammation. Stop holding your cell phone to your ear and use your speaker function. Make sure you sleep properly in as dark a room as possible. Eat and use chemical free products. Use antiinflammatory herbs and spices like ginger and cayenne pepper. Filter your air if need be.
8. CUT DOWN ON CARBS & SUGAR One of the most important things you can do is to cut out foods that give your body energy spikes. Sugar of course is the biggest culprit but so are some carbohydrates and starches. Fat based fuels are better in your body. Be warned that if you do have a high sugar intake, cutting down and then cutting out can make you grumpy and irritable. Stick it out for ten days and see how much better you feel. Use stevia, coconut blossom sugar and sweeteners that keep blood sugar more stable. Use oils like coconut oil, ghee, olive oil and avocado oil.
9. BUILD MUSCLE AND FLEXIBILITY Muscles make your body feel strong and stretching exercises will keep your joints in check. Make sure your exercise routine includes both. Choose exercise you love to make it easy for you to do it regularly.
10. FIND YOUR BALANCE Rather than spend your whole life in process of detox, do periods of cleaning out and then find a good balance by eating healthy foods you love, exercising in a disciplined but moderate way and creating enough time for relaxation. Make sure you are happy by following your passion and developing loving relationships.

The unspoken truth was there was nothing more the doctors could do for me; I realised I was dying.
Healing with
LIFE ENERGY A deadly tropical virus helped me find life
did you know? The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Energy Healing is all about accepting that you are an energy being; a being much more complicated than just a physical body. A being that exists in multiple dimensions at the same time. Accepting and understanding this, one can then utilise specific techniques to restore energy flow to the optimum balance across all those dimensions.
I
t took a rare tropical illness to connect Sabine Thomas with her life purpose. As a young woman travelling in Burkina Faso she became very ill with a mysterious virus that doctors couldn’t diagnose. Sent home with no hope of recovery, her mother told her she should see a healer who lived nearby. This fateful meeting ultimately led to the discovery of healing Life Energy. Sabine tells her story. Many years ago, living in Burkina Faso, I became ill with a virus nobody could diagnose. Local doctors, unable to heal me, sent me abroad to the Centre for Tropical Diseases in Paris, France, the country of my birth. The doctors there placed me in quarantine in a glass cubicle and examined me through partitions. I couldn’t eat or drink and I was losing weight very quickly. I was too weak to move. I wasn’t getting any better.
It was decided that I should go home. The unspoken truth was there was nothing more the doctors could do for me; I realised I was dying. It was then I decided if I was going to die, I wasn’t going to die surrounded by strangers. I was going home to spend my last days with my mother. She took care of me night and day, doing her best to make me comfortable. One day she said to me: ‘Sabine, there’s a man who lives down the road who I think you should see. I don’t know anything about him or what he does, but people have been saying he heals sick people.’ I asked her to please bring him to me immediately. That same day he came. He placed his hands carefully on certain spots along my spine, took a few breaths, remained still for a minute or two, and left. I remember being so disappointed I almost

cried. Where was he going? I thought he was going to help me and yet he had stayed barely a moment.
Everyday Winter Wellness
The man came again the next day for two minutes, and the next, and the day after that. By the fourth day I started feeling a little hungry. By the end of the first week I could get out of bed without my mother’s help. Within two weeks I was virtually back to normal, starting to gain the weight I’d lost. I was beginning to feel like myself again. I had to find out how this man had cured me when the best doctors in the world hadn’t known what was making me sick. I went to see him and he introduced me to Life Energy. He taught me that healing is simply allowing our own beautiful spirit to shine through us. Everyone has healing energy within them that can restore balance, decrease stress, and ease pain. Thanks to this unique tool, we can take better care of our health while bringing our body and soul into closer harmony. Life Energy didn’t just change my life. By connecting me with my greater purpose, Life Energy has saved my life.
Q&A with Sabine Thomas Is Life Energy Technique available in South Africa? In South-Africa, more than 4,000 people have learned and used this unique and powerful healing method. Who can use Life Energy? Anyone can do it. Old or young (as long as you are 14 and above), no matter your level of education, rich or poor – it doesn’t matter. Everyone can learn to use this tool and offer it, free of charge, to whoever needs it. You can even use it on yourself. Can animals benefit from Life Energy? Just like Life Energy can heal humans, it can heal other animals too. We’ve found that animals are drawn to the technique, which is a very different response to the fear they feel when faced with going to the vet. Life Energy can even benefit plants, offering a natural, chemical-free way to increase the yield of crops. It’s universal. For more information on Life Energy, visit www.lifeenergy.co.za
HEALING WITH THE LIFE FORCE Reiki is one of the best known methods of energy healing. The word ‘reiki’ is made up of two Japanese words: ‘rei’ means ‘Higher Power’ and ‘ki’ means ‘life force energy’. So Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy. It’s based on the idea that there’s a ‘life force energy’ flowing unseen through all of us. When we feel sick or we’re stressed, this energy is low. When this energy is high, it’s easier for us to be healthy and happy. Reiki is very easy to learn. It’s passed on to a student by a reiki master in class and allows the student to tap into ‘life force energy’ to heal themselves and others.
Always read the label and use as directed. Supplementary to a balanced diet. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

It is only when we measure the full opportunity cost of our choices and actions that we find the win-win option that supports both ourselves, and the planet we live on.
EARTH CONNECTION
Dr Yesheen Singh
Think of the life cycle of a droplet of water as it moves through the world. From a rain cloud, it travels to earth. There it joins a stream and makes its way to the ocean, where it evaporates into water vapour and starts the cycle again. Or the same water droplet could rain down on earth, travel through the roots and trunk of a plant, carrying life-giving nutrients from the soil to the plant tissue, and eventually find a temporary home in the leaves or fruit of the plant.
N
ow look at the journey of a drop of water through your body. It comes into your body through a drink or a meal and travels through your stomach to your small intestine. Once there, it crosses the gut-body border into your blood stream. It travels to your organs, transporting oxygen and nutrients to your cells and lets carbon dioxide and metabolic waste out.
did you know? When you respect your body and honour its highest needs you are indirectly respecting and honouring the needs of the planet and all who inhabit her. Similarly, when you consider your impact on the environment, you are supporting the health and wellbeing of your body. We are of the earth and she is of us.
36
Eventually it makes its way out of your body, either through your kidneys, where it gets passed into your urine, through your lungs as water vapour, through your skin as perspiration or through your gut in your stool. Your urine and stool are deposited back into the earth or ocean and the water droplet joins its buddies in its journey up to the sky. The message is how the very same water droplet can loop from the cycle in the world around us into the cycle of the world within us and back again into the outer cycle. There is no divide, no separation, no border. This is the seamless cycle of how things in the universe and on earth work. From the water droplet, to the probiotics in the colon, to the calcium element in the skeleton, the electrons buzzing around our atoms – all elements of our being come from and will be returned to earth. We live in a time where there is little awareness of this seamless interface. People exist in separation from the planet. They make choices without considering the repercussions of their actions on other life forms. They do not see how their shorteverything you need to live life well
term gains, comforts or conveniences will eventually create harmful repercussions of their own experience of life. We live in a time when the fruit of these past choices have ripened and are falling heavily into the present reality. What can we do, you may ask? How can you or your community make an impact on the wave of destruction happening around us? Begin by considering the full life cycle of each choice you make. For example, the choice to buy an organic cup of coffee may seem like a good idea, but is it really? Think about where the beans are grown did a forest have to be cut down to make way for a coffee bean plantation? Did the natural resources like water get diverted to the plantation and away from the natural environment? Then consider the energy cost of transporting the beans to your local coffee shop as well as the energy cost of roasting and converting them into a hot beverage. And finally consider the cost of a daily cup of coffee on your body, your adrenal glands, your gut, your brain. For more about Dr Yesheen Singh log onto www.healthnation.co.za
Start HEALING YOURSELF from within... The ONLY system in your body that can GET you well and KEEP you well is your Immune System. The strength of your immune system determines your body’s ability to resist infection and the potential growth of abnormal (cancerous) cells. If it is below its optimum level, we are much more prone to illness. If our immune system is maintained at an optimum level, our incidence of disease is much less. It is therefore imperative to maintain a strong immune system, so that you are able to heal yourself on a daily basis.

Our health, wealth and happiness depends on our ability to meet our needs in a healthy way.
KNOW YOUR VALUES Dr Mark Vella
Over time our lifestyle choices add up and steer our lives towards a more positive or negative expression of wellbeing. In this way, our choices can be a form of medicine, one we call Lifestyle Medicine.
F
or Lifestyle Medicine to create true positive transformation it requires a positive approach to health based on personal responsibility, self-mastery, a balanced lifestyle, environmental and social awareness, and spiritual growth. This includes harmony between mind, body, spirit, emotions, and balance between our inner universe and outer world. To begin, it’s important to understand how the inner realm within us drives our experience of the outer world and influences our emotional responses, actions, and experiences.
did you know? Most programmes towards better wellbeing, focus on changing habits. But trying to change habits has a low rate of success. This is because at a deep level we still have universal needs that drive those habits. Without reforming the way our needs are met, or finding a higher way to express those needs, we tend to stick to the habits we know.
38
Within us we have six universal needs. All behaviour is simply an attempt to meet those six needs. Our health, wealth and happiness depends on our ability to meet those needs in a healthy way. These are: 1. Certainty: The warranty that you can avoid pain and gain pleasure 2. Variety: The need for the unknown, change, and diversity 3. Significance: Feeling unique, important, valid or needed 4. Connection/Love: A strong feeling of intimacy or bond with someone or something 5. Growth: Transformation and development of our capability or understanding 6. Contribution: A sense of service on helping, giving to and supporting others Our values and choices are based on fulfilling those needs. Our choices translate into actions, which become habits. Pretty soon those habits shape our destiny. So we create our experience of the outer world and our future, from habits, driven by meeting our needs. You can predict your future with a large degree of certainty, by looking at your regular habits. Of the six universal needs, two in particular determine our spiritual fulfilment, and help shape a life of meaning. These are our need for growth, and the need for contribution beyond ourselves. When these two needs are not consistently met, we tend to live with dysfunctional patterns that negatively impact our health, wealth and state of happiness.
everything you need to live life well
To sum it up: if you want your lifestyle choices to create better health, wealth and happiness for you, start by understanding what your inner needs are and how you meet them. Answer the questions below and see if there is a better, more positive way to meet those needs. Look at your regular day to day habits. By discovering what drives your choices, you can more easily understand your past decisions and be more informed in your future decision-making. Then ask yourself: 1. Which two of the six needs do I most value? 2. What are the positive and negative ways I meet these needs? Think about areas of your life like your relationships, work, eating, exercise, etc. 3. How can I develop my growth and contribution needs? Are there new things I can try, experience or participate in? If you have a spouse or significant other, think about which two needs they most value. Understanding this, you’ll be in a much better position to give them not just what want, but what they need. Keeping Bees
Across the globe, bee hives are starting to pop up in unusual places. Bees are being kept on top of hotels, of businesses and museums, and even opera houses. More cities in the US are legalising urban beekeeping and the Mayor of London has set aside a budget specifically for urban beekeeping projects. We’re even seeing rooftop beekeeping in South Africa’s bigger cities.

Plan bee
One in every three bites of food eaten across the world needs to be pollinated for a successful harvest. The 100 most important food crops can’t be grown without pollination. There’s concern that, without bees to pollinate plants, we could face a global food crisis. Bees aren’t the only insects that pollinate plants, allowing them to produce fruit or grain, but they’re considered the most important pollinators.
Urban beekeeping isn’t a new phenomenon. In Los Angeles, a city known for being progressive, people have been keeping bees in their backyards for years to enjoy the health benefits of locally grown, raw honey. While the enthusiasm for urban beekeeping has spread to other parts of the US – the Waldorf Astoria in New York has hives on its roof – it’s sunny California where beekeeping is really taking off. Even local government is showing strong support of the trend.
Colony collapse The rise in urban beekeeping is no accident. It’s a response to rising global concerns about decreasing bee populations. In the US and Europe over the last 10 years, beekeepers have been reporting annual hive losses of 30% or more. A 5-10% loss of bees a year used to be the norm. A report in Yale Environment 360 pointed out that in the winter of 2013 many US beekeepers lost 50% or more of their hives. The problem is so common and widespread that scientists have come to call it ‘colony collapse disorder’.
Pesticide problem In 2013 the EU banned pesticides called neonicotinoids for two years. They’re used widely across the globe and many experts believe they’re responsible for the drop we’re seeing in bee populations worldwide. The European Food Safety Agency says that neonicotinoids represent a ‘high acute risk’ to honeybees and other pollinators. In other words, they’re very dangerous to bees, even in the short term. People investigating colony collapse disorder agree that pesticides are a major problem. However, putting dropping bee populations down to neonicotinoids alone would be simplifying the problem. Entomologists and professional beekeepers believe that alongside the widespread use of pesticides; fungicides and parasites are also threatening bees. No single cause for the high rate of the collapse of hives has been found and critics believe that banning the use of pesticides temporarily, like the EU is doing, will do little to solve the problem. Beekeepers are doing all they can to keep their hives healthy, but many feel that they’re fighting a losing battle that could have very serious consequences for the whole planet.
The city of Los Angeles is considering changing its zoning laws and going ‘pro bee’. The city believes that allowing ‘backyard beekeeping’ could help fight colony collapse disorder, which it recognises as a very serious issue. Not everyone agrees. For one, urban bee populations would have to be enormous to meet the needs of agriculture if that was ever necessary. For example, it takes billions of bees from all around the US to pollinate California’s almond crop (California grows 75% of the world’s almonds). Still, there’s no harm in city dwellers keeping bees. Besides producing honey, bees help green urban spaces.
Backyard bees If you want to grow your own honey in your backyard – or on your rooftop – it’s not as hard as you might think. Bees don’t need that much attention to get the job done. All they really need is a dry place to protect them from the elements, a place to get fresh, clean water, and some food.
hive apart when you need to. It will be stuck together by sticky propolis. 3. Get building If you ordered your hive, it will probably have come to you in pieces. Read the instructions and put it together. 4. Get some bees Find a bee supplier close by. Let them know that you’re a first time beekeeper and that you’ll be starting a backyard beehive. They should be more than willing to offer advice. Once you’ve got your hive set up you’ll need to be patient. It generally takes up to a season before your first harvest, but it’ll be well worth the wait.
BEES DO MORE THAN MAKE HONEY They also help produce some of your favourite foods:
• Apples • Oranges • Avos • Lemons • Onions • Cucumber • Carrots
Get a hive The first step for the budding beekeeper is getting a hive. There are ready-made hives available online. 1. Get some protective gear If you keep bees, you will get stung. How much gear you wear, though, is completely up to you. You could cover up from head to in a full-length suit. You could opt to wear gloves, or not. You might want to wear more protective clothing at first until you find your comfort zone.
did you know? A queen bee can live up to four years. Certain types of worker bees can live up to six months, while drones may only live a few weeks.
2. Get a smoker and hive tool You’ll need a smoker to calm the bees. This will make it easier to work with them. At the same time, a hive tool will help you take the www.wellnesswarehouse.com

GO LOCAL FOR HAYFEVER Raw honey is great. It’s packed with vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants. Local raw honey is even better. Because it contains pollen from your area, it can help with local seasonal allergies. Start taking a small amount of raw, local honey every day months before allergy season starts. It’s said this will slowly build up your body’s tolerance and help prevent hayfever.
DO A BEE KEEPING COURSE In Cape Town, Dominique and Jenny Marchand from the Honeybee Foundation offer courses in beekeeping. They have a creative education centre for learners and adults that cover hobbyists and also training for rural development. For over 30 years they have kept bees and they now manufacture beekeeping equipment and provide pollination and swarm removal services. They also sell hive products like raw honey, health products, confectionery and apicosmetics. Dominique and his team won the FNB Enablis Business Plan Competition in 2006 for their work on extending beekeeping to rural South Africa. Dirty laundry Why? If it’s not dirty, don’t wash it. You might balk at the idea of wearing an item of clothing twice, but before you throw it in the wash see if it really needs a clean. We don’t recommend recycling socks, but what about the sweater you wore for half an hour last night when it suddenly got chilly? One washing cycle can use more water than many South Africans have access to in a three day period. Older washing machines can use as much as 150 litres of water a load. South Africa is a water scarce country and we need to conserve what we have. How? Newer, more efficient washing machines use closer to 50 litres a load. If you have an older washing machine, invest in a new one if possible but look for green credentials before you buy. A ‘green’ washing machine is only green if it really does use less power and energy. A more efficient washing machine will save you money over time. Then, wash only when necessary. Wash a full load once or twice a week rather than half a load a few times a week. Of course, you’ll need to gauge this based on how many people you’re washing for.
Ban the bleach Why? Most of our homes are loaded with chemicals, and our kitchens and bathrooms are the main culprits. To keep ourselves and our families safe, we want to know that we’re deep cleaning these areas and killing germs and bacteria. This means that even the most careful and aware of us often use harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach in our toilets, basins, sinks and on kitchen counters. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the American government’s watchdog for the health of its citizens and environment, says that ‘breathing small amounts of chlorine [found in chlorine bleach] for short periods of time adversely affects the human respiratory system’. Lab studies have shown repeated exposure to chlorine in the air has caused immune, heart, blood and respiratory system problems in animals.
made from hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is so strong that it’s used industrially to treat polluted wastewater. It’s usually sold diluted, though, in a safer form than chlorine bleach. It’s less likely to upset your skin and it shouldn’t cause the breathing problems bleach can cause. In fact, it’s considered safe enough to be used in teeth whitening formulas. When you replace your bleach with hydrogen peroxide you can also rest assured that you’re not harming the environment, because it’s biodegradable.
Meatless Monday Why? Eating meat really takes its toll on the planet. Many believe that meat production is the most important reason for global warming. In fact, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates the meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of human-made greenhouse gas emissions. That’s far more than transportation generates. Growing animals for food also takes up a lot of space. Animal agriculture uses up 70% of agricultural land and is thought to be the biggest cause of the slashing and burning of forests. How? For people who’ve never eaten vegetarian, cutting out meat completely can seem very daunting. That’s where meat-free Monday comes in. Cutting out meat just one day a week will reduce the impact the meat you eat has on the planet by one-seventh. This may sound like a small amount, but it really adds up. If you already eat very little meat or you’re vegetarian, try cutting out dairy too. And if you’re vegan, give yourself a pat on the back.
Eco Diva Nicole’s Eco-Friendly Air Freshener Many people don’t realise that commercial air fresheners may contain toxic chemicals like: •
Phthalates, which have been linked with abnormally developed male genitalia, poor semen quality, low testosterone levels, and other reproductive issues.
•
Acetone, which is a known blood, heart, gastrointestinal, liver, kidney, skin, respiratory, brain and nervous system toxin.
•
Butane and Isobutane, believed to be a serious toxin to our brain and nervous systems.
Research shows that exposure to so-called ‘air fresheners’ as little as once a week can increase your odds of developing asthma by as much as 71% and can contribute to an increase in pulmonary diseases. Try the natural route with non-toxic, organic air fresheners or make your own. Here’s a simple recipe:

Glass jar with wide neck Elastic band to fit the neck of the jar Cardstock paper 1/2 cup baking soda 10+ drops of essential oils. My favourite mix is: Orange, Grapefruit, Sandalwood, Neroli, Bergamot Needle Scissors
Directions: Turn your jar upside down and trace the mouth of the jar onto the cardstock leaving a margin so you can fold an edge over the mouth of the jar. Cut out the circle. Fill your jar with 1/2 cup of baking soda. Add your essential oils. Place the cardboard cut-out circle over the mouth of the jar. Secure it with an elastic band. Use a needle to make holes in the cardstock. Give your oil/baking soda mix a good shake. Place in a few jars in various areas of your home for a fresh-smelling environment that is purely natural.
How? There are less toxic alternatives to chlorine bleach that work just as well and don’t damage the environment. This month, try replacing your chlorine bleach with one

A mug of your own Why? Americans throw away 25 billion disposable coffee cups every year. South Africans are a nation of coffee lovers, too, and one way we can reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up on landfills is by investing in reusable coffee cups. The material many of our disposable cups are made from is a plastic called styrene (as found in polystyrene) and it’s a substance that takes a very long time to biodegrade, and gets into the soil and water. It’s also thought to cause cancer in humans. How? Coffee giant Starbucks in Mexico have started an initiative that offers a discount to customers who use their new reusable cups, which can be used up to 30 times. At home in South Africa, reusable coffee cups are available at certain coffee shops and retail stores. Explain to your favourite barista that you’re doing your bit for the planet and they’ll be more than happy to fill your reusable mug for you.
Remember, every little bit makes a difference. Don’t feel discouraged if you’re not all green all the time. The planet won’t hold it against you. Happy Earth Day.
Sixty-six days to good habits It’s commonly thought that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Research shows, however,
did you know? Barack Obama famously said in his 2008 Berlin speech: ‘This is the moment when we must come together to save this planet. Let us resolve that we will not leave our children a world where the oceans rise and famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands.’
that if you want to make green practices a part of your daily life you might have to be patient with yourself. University College in London carried out a study that suggests it can take as long as 66 days for a new habit to become automatic. So hang in there. As far back as 1848 German experimental psychologist Dr Gustav Theodor Fechner suggested that plants were capable of emotions and that talking to them could promote positive growth.
Could sound save the planet? Do you talk to your plants? Many people do. Avid gardener Prince Charles, was once asked in an interview how he spent his time outdoors. He famously said: “I just come and talk to the plants, really – very important to talk to them, they respond.”
B
ut do they really listen? And if they do, could that help us find greener ways to farm – without the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides?
Rock me Amadeus Science is divided on the topic of talking to plants. Studies experimenting with the effect of sound and vibration on the growth of plants show varying results. In one well-known study South Korean researchers monitored the gene activity of
50
rice plants exposed to noise – specifically, 14 different pieces of classical music. They discovered that music did trigger a response in the plants. Activity in two genes, rbcS and Ald, was affected. Some pieces of music made the genes more active, while others made them more subdued. The Korean scientists put this down to frequency but nobody is certain why and how plants might react to sound. Some say the number of plants studied was too small for the results to be reliable. Geneticists are also uncertain how plants could benefit from ‘hearing’. everything you need to live life well
When plants talk back Scientists may be uncertain if plants can hear us, but it seems they may be talking to each other. Researchers from the University of Western Australia tried to grow chilli seeds with other chilli plants and basil nearby. When there were plants nearby the seeds germinated much more rapidly. Without ‘neighbours’, fewer chilli seeds germinated and grew into seedlings. To explore this further, the scientists separated the chilli seeds from the basil
livewell green living
plants with black plastic. As it turned out, the chilli seeds germinated as though they could still communicate with the basil. Scientist Dr Monica Gagliano explained, “Our results show that plants are able to positively influence the growth of seeds by some as yet unknown mechanism. Bad plant neighbours, like fennel, prevent chilli seeds from germinating in the same way. We believe the answer may involve acoustic signals generated using nanomechanical oscillations from inside the cell which allow rapid communication between nearby plants.” In other words, it seems like the plants really were ‘talking’ to each other. Gagliano thinks learning the secret language of plants could benefit humans practically. Farmers could use sound to encourage the growth of certain plants or to discourage the growth of others.
“I think as humans, we’ve been conservative in believing what nature will allow us to do. We limit ourselves to a small box when nature provides many more tools that we can use.” Secret Life of Plants It’s taken a while for mainstream science to catch up with alternative thought when it comes to the language of plants. As far back as 1848 German experimental psychologist Dr Gustav Theodor Fechner suggested that plants were capable of emotions and that talking to them could promote positive growth. In the 1900s, Indian scientist Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose found what he considered to be a nervous system in plants, asserting that they could feel pain and affection. He believed plants were sensitive to sound and that they grew well to gentle, pleasing music. By contrast, plants would grow more slowly when exposed to harsh sounds. In the 1960s, inspired by Bose’s experiments, an interrogation specialist with the CIA used a polygraph to run tests on plants. Cleve Backster claimed that his polygraph clocked up anxiety in a plant he intended to harm. Because he hadn’t actually harmed the plant yet, this meant it
had not only experienced the fear, but it had also read his mind. Backster concluded that plants had a ‘sense’ that we hadn’t yet picked up on (he called it ‘primary perception’) and that, using this, they could respond to human thought and emotion. His findings garnered a lot of media attention and went on to inspire the highly popular 1973 book The Secret Life of Plants, by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, which discussed these findings and how they could be used in progressive farming.
Sonic bloom Progressive farmers look for solutions to feeding the planet without doing harm. The findings of Backster and those who went before him inspired a new generation of thinkers who wanted to use plants’ ability to communicate, to heal the planet. Dan Carlson, the inventor of Sonic Bloom, is one of these people. Sonic Bloom uses a combination of sound and nutrients to improve the growth of plants. Carlson’s method applies a special fertiliser to leaves whose stomata (the tiny pores on leaves that allow them to ‘breathe’) have been opened by the sound of ‘synthesised birdsong’. He believes his method can increase yields up to 700% greater than ‘normal’. While Carlson can’t prove any of this, (some) science seems to be on his side.
We’re not there yet, but... Frank Telewski, a botanist at Michigan State University, is open to the idea that plants communicate using sound. “How many times have you sat next to someone who has their car stereo at full blast? You can feel it pounding in your heart.”
In the same way, Telewski believes, plants can respond to sound. He points to gene experiments like those carried out in South Korea, and experiments in China that have increased plant yields by exposing crops to sound waves of certain frequencies. When it comes to the efforts to prove that plants communicate, he says,
“We’re not there yet. Sometimes a fantastic hypothesis can turn out to be true, but there has to be fantastic evidence to support it.”
did you know? Stevie Wonder sang about 19th century Indian scientist Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose’s findings on plants in a song called Same Old Story. This song played on the soundtrack to the movie Secret Life of Plants, based on the book of the same name. The song included the lyrics: ‘for most felt it was mad to conceive that plants thought/felt and moved quite like we/but with instruments Bose would devise/would take science itself by surprise’.
He says that trees respond to wind (this is his specialty) exactly the same way. Like wind, sound is a wave that travels through air, and trees need to respond to touch, to ‘feel’ it. Telewski even believes that trees need wind to grow. “If you stake down a seedling, you do it a bit of disservice, because a tree needs to perceive motion. It’s like physical therapy for the tree. If you stake it too tight, it doesn’t allow the plant to produce stronger tissues.”

Escape the city and feed your soul at Taim-Go-Loer guest farm in Napier - the perfect weekend getaway.
By Gabriel Byrne
Weekend AWAY
Once in a while we all reach the point of urban saturation, when the city just gets too much, and escape to the country is the only way to avoid a meltdown. Even I, a city person through and through, am not immune so when the opportunity to get away was offered I seized it with both hands.
W
hat I couldn’t reschedule, I cancelled. I made plans for the cat and garden; flung a few things into a travelling bag and then hesitated over my laptop. But who was I kidding? Of course I took it. Finally, after a cyclone of pointless last minute activity, I set off on the two hour journey to Napier with my fearlessly adventurous friend Fran at the wheel. The traffic out was congested, as if the city was reluctant to let us go, but once we crested the Hottentot’s Holland range, I settled down enough to breath freely.
did you know? The Napier Farm Stall has set the standard in Napier for top quality ‘plaaskombuis’, or as the English refer, a wholesome country meal. Created by Ilze Vos in 1999, this farm stall has become an Overberg landmark with travellers from all over the world stopping here to savour hearty country fare.
52
About 20 minutes after Caledon, and just before Napier we found the road sign “Sandy’s Glen” and we turned off the highway and onto a gravel road. After dipping and winding through harvested wheat fields we found a ridge below which flows a stream hidden by a ribbon of greenery and oak trees. Several ponds and farm houses later we reached our destination and were welcomed by an excited Yvonne who manages TaimGo-Loer: we had just missed the birth of Biscotti, the new calf on the block. Our four star, self-catering cabin had a converted veranda with a large living area and built in braai (complete with fire wood). There were comfortable couches, a dining table for six and fully equipped kitchen including coffee plunger stocked with quality ground coffee. The entrance hall floor is set with peach pips - an Overberg tradition and charming touch of authenticity. This led to an airy bathroom (resplendent with soft towels, luxury soaps and body lotion) and two bedrooms, one with a queen size bed (with mosquito net), the other with two single beds. Pristine percale bedding and down duvets promised a night of restful sleep while fresh cut flowers and homemade muesli rusks from the Napier farm stall were an added delight.
everything you need to live life well
After settling in and having a refreshing plunge in the pool we met owners Ilze and Marlene who explained that although the cabins are self-catering, guests can prearrange cooked meals. Guests are also welcome to help themselves to the farm’s organically grown herbs and vegetables. Keep an eye out and you may find organic, free range eggs – and I mean really free range – the farm’s chickens brood and cluck about the gardens. Just beyond the front door the chickens are watched over by mamma cow and the two donkeys, Jaapie and Pumpkin. Expect to enjoy mountain biking and scenic walks – the area abounds with birdlife and even antelope are regularly spotted. Ilze also owns and runs the Napier country farm stall with breakfast, lunch, light meals and afternoon tea. Don’t miss the legendary black pan breakfast! Also on offer is a wide selection of homemade pies, tarts, deli items, jams, breads and gifts. Taim-Go-Loer is a little corner of unspoilt rural serenity where time stands still. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. Like a dream, our weekend was over too soon and we reluctantly returned to the city, my laptop still unopened.

Many of the tensions of the body come from the problems of the mind, walking removes the bubbles that leave the body loose and unfit. It also removes the bubbles that leave the soul loose and unfit.
LEARNING TO WALK
Most people walk without thinking about it. Examining your gait, and doing small adjustments can make the difference between trudging and feeling like you are walking on air. Conscious walking creates body awareness, releases stress and can bring immense healing.
did you know? A moderately active person takes on average about 5000 steps a day. If you live until 70 and maintain that average for 65 years of your life, you will have walked approximately 118,625,000 steps. With about 1,320 steps to a kilometer, that means a walking distance of 89 867,42 kilometres in a lifetime.
54
B
ecause we live out of our bodies, often perceiving that they are separate to us, we seldom notice how we hold ourselves, or how we move. Take time out to examine how you walk and you might notice that one foot takes a bigger step than the other. Your body might slope to the left or right, your gait might be directed and efficient, or loose and curvy. You will notice how evenly placed your weight is by looking at your shoes. Most people wear out one side of their shoes more than another. We all have different ways of placing our feet on the ground, some heel first, some toe first. Often we mimic the walk of our parents or carers. If one of your parents walks leaning forward you are likely to pick up the habit. Without realising it, depending on what we are thinking, our bodies tense up or relax. When anxious, we are likely to walk in a rigid, automatic way with our minds elsewhere. We are also likely to hold our breath, create a knot in the stomach and frown or tighten the jaw. If we think, and walk like this, year after year, the tensions everything you need to live life well
become habitual and so embedded that we don’t ever relax completely, not even in sleep. Once we lose the easy childlike sense of movement in the body, we grow old fast. Walking consciously can bring attention to this and change embedded habits.
BODY THERAPIES Disciplines like Hellerwork, Rolfing and the Alexander technique, and movement forms like Tai Chi and yoga work towards bringing adjustments in structure and function, undoing some of the negative habits we pick up over the years. They also contribute towards getting the body to work in its most efficient way. Hellerwork founder, Joseph Heller, stressed the importance of paying attention to the ‘tensions’ of the body that came from the problems of the mind. You can get into a habit of noticing your mind-body connection through walking. All you need to do is pay attention with focused awareness.
WALKING AS MEDITATION Walking is used as a traditional meditation practice in the East. Forest monks in
movewell
fitness, sleep & massage
Thailand stride up and down a measured walking track in front of their huts. Zen practitioners walk in a circle around the room in between their sitting meditations. Even the movement art of Tai Chi is based on standing and walking meditations from years old Chinese culture. A walking practice can lead you deeply inward and has a balancing effect on the mind. Meditative walking is slow and involves mindful attention to each step taken, to the in-breath and the out-breath, it is not focused on the destination but is simply walking in order to walk. This leaves the mind free to meditate and find peace.
In this way, it alleviates anxiety and depression. As the neuroscientist Sam Harris said, “Habitual identification with the flow of thought (our failure to recognise thoughts as transient) is a primary source of human suffering.”
USING A LABYRINTH
3. Scan your body to see where you have
A labyrinth is a garden path with a simple pattern often geometrically formed from a cross. Labyrinths provide a confined area for mindful or prayerful walking. They were used in the Middle Ages in churches and cathedrals as a symbolic way for Christians to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There are no ends on a labyrinth so you can follow the pattern mindlessly without ending or getting lost. You start on a path, put one foot in front of the other, arrive at the center and go back out again to the starting place. This allows a structure for reflection, for prayer, for breathing and paying attention.
HOW TO WALK CONSCIOUSLY When you find your true natural gait, walking becomes a graceful and beautiful act, and the stiff jerky quality of automatic walking soon disappears. At any age, and regardless of injuries, we can still consciously develop an innate sense of balance, muscle coordination and flow. Movement therapist Maureen Green says, “It is your mind that moves your body, often we become locked in one type of movement without realising what we are doing.”
Follow some of the ideas and suggestions below to start a practice of conscious movement. 1.
Give yourself permission to switch off and bring yourself into present awareness. Leave all thoughts, issues and problems behind. Be aware of getting out of your head and into your body. Focusing on the present moment allows a welcome respite from compulsive and painful thoughts.
A Buddhist slogan says ‘When walking, just walk’ or in other words, ‘Pay attention to the ever-changing sensations of your body as you walk.’
2. Heighten your senses. Become aware of colours, smells, textures, and the space around you - feel the wind or sun on your skin.
tension. See if your forehead is crumpled, if one hip jars, if you drag one foot more than the other, if your mouth is tensed. Move systematically through every part of your body and release the areas you carry tension. Realise that holding tension becomes habitual and that you may need to continuously remind your body to release tension before a new habit is formed. Sighing and breathing into tense areas will facilitate release and help you cultivate smooth, flowing movement.
4.
Try out different ways of placing your feet on the ground. If you usually place your feet toe first then heel, try the opposite. Walk with an emphasis in your hips, then try without. Breathe deeply and lift your posture, then slouch. Walk backwards for a while. Find your true and natural walking style by trying out different ways of placing your body. It’s not about how fast you walk but about walking consciously and with awareness. When we walk it should be like a wave going through the body, when done properly the movement from walking massages the colon.
5.
Once you are happy with your walk keep practicing it by continuing to walk slowly with awareness. Do this by concentrating on your breathing, or find a mantra or affirmation to repeat. Or you can express yourself spiritually, giving thanks or praying.
6. An exercise that therapist Lisa Berman suggests is to use imagery to bring replenishing energy from the earth through the soles of your feet, up your body and to the crown of your head. You can also visualize energy from the sun entering your body through the top of your head and down your spine to your feet. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

“Rejection became my friend, and subconsciously I would set myself up to be rejected by the people around me,” says Berman. “I was scared of glass and spiders and never invited anyone home. “For years I practiced walking consciously, taking in the energy around me allowing it to rejuvenate me and then giving it back to the earth. I learnt how to transfer negative emotions and feelings into positive ones, how to surrender my fears and have faith.” Through walking Berman saw that everything in nature is unique, she started to recognise her own uniqueness and felt less isolated. “Walking also helped to raise the serotonin level in my body which helps alleviate depression.”

HIKING WITH THE EARTH CHILDREN
To inspire children towards a deep love, respect and connection with the earth, the humanitarian organisation, the Earthchild Project takes kids hiking as a way to ignite a sense of wonder in the natural world. “After all, how can we love nature if we have never experienced it?” says Earthchild ambassador Carla Thiele. The children we work with live in township communities and seldom leave these harsh environments. Most have never been in a forest, climbed a mountain or walked along the ocean. Although the hikes include education about fauna, flora and environmental issues, our main intention is to inspire them to connect with themselves and nature. Because we are used to the buzz of the city, it can be difficult to slow down and become still and present. The Earthchild facilitators encourage this by including guided meditations, silent walks and other simple activities.
58
Follow suit and engage in an Earthchild activity with your kids. This one is called the Animal Senses Silent Walk: Tell your children that for a few minutes you are going to walk slowly and quietly so you can use your special animal senses - your ‘owl eyes’, ‘kudu ears’, ‘baboon touch’ and ‘dog smell’. Talk about each animal and how you can be like them by really paying attention to the sensory details around you. Afterwards you can come together and each share something you saw, heard, felt or smelt and how you found the experience.
“I have always seen the mountain from my back yard and always wished I could climb it one day. Today was my first time walking on Table Mountain and it was a dream come true.” Annelisiwe, Grade 6

eco mom & baby
Consumers don’t always expect chemicals in baby products yet some of the most popular brands have high chemical ratings.
GREEN BABY
In response to global warming and other environmental concerns, our homes are going green - as are our cars, offices, businesses, farming and food manufacturing practices. Most importantly, in building a sustainable future, the way we raise our children is an inevitable aspect of the green movement.
did you know? Raising your baby in a natural environment free of toxins, preservatives, additives and chemicals will not only benefit your baby’s health, but will benefit the environment and bring green values to your child and home. By getting into the green habit, you will raise an eco-conscious and ecofriendly child and help make the world a cleaner, better place for their future.
M
any people, on a global scale, are embracing sustainable practices and customers are becoming increasingly aware and demanding sustainable products. New parents want the best of everything for their babies, and adopting a green approach to having and caring for a baby could be the wisest choice any parent could make for their child. The good news for parents wanting to go the green route is that South Africa is seeing a marked increase in the amount of eco-friendly, green products available on the shelves. Besides that, there are many more natural ingredients available to make up your own chemical free body products. Sean Gomes, managing director of Wellness Warehouse, says in the last few years we have seen a marked shift in consumer behaviour as more and more parents look for ways to go green and protect not only their children, but also the environment. “Baby essentials like organic formula, cereal, and first foods (purees) are now all

available - alongside organic baby clothing, biodegradable wipes, biodegradable and organic diapers, organic baby care products like soaps and creams and even organic, non-toxic toys. There are even products like reusable baby plates and cutlery made from corn and without BPA, PVC or phthalate.” Babies are highly sensitive to toxins. Most kids are exposed to a scary amount of chemicals on a daily basis, and even babies are born with chemicals in their umbilical blood. Surprisingly, most baby products and shampoos contain chemicals and many are not actually safe for baby. People don’t always expect chemicals in baby products. Some of the most popular brands have high chemical ratings. Because organic products are manufactured without additives or pesticides or genetic modification they offer your baby the best start for a healthy, allergy free life. “Whilst the idea of organic baby clothing may seem a stretch, certain non-organic fibres used in clothing production contain

toxins from the pesticides used to grow cotton and this could be harmful to your baby. In contrast organic clothing is free from chemicals.” You don’t have to go ‘old school’ to access eco-friendly diapers. Those concerned about towel diapers being the only options, need not worry. There is a range of diapers available that contain more than 50% biodegradable materials and are free from perfume, chlorine, lotions, chemical antioxidants, dioxin, TBT, and natural latex, substances all well known for causing allergic reactions in babies. When purchasing body care products for your baby, it is especially important to read product labels carefully. The skin absorbs a large amount of whatever is applied topically making it important to know what ingredients are in our body products. A baby’s skin is extremely sensitive and thin. The epidermis or outer layer of a baby’s skin is 20-30% thinner than adult skin and extremely susceptible to external irritants.
Going green is child’s play. When it comes to toys, in the past most parents were just worried about those that presented a choking hazard – however times have changed and now parents need to worry about a variety of harmful metals and synthetic chemicals in many toys as well. When selecting toys read labels carefully and buy local, naturally made products. Look for safe toys made of natural materials like solid woods with no finish or a non-toxic finish and organic textiles.
TIPS IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT WHICH PRODUCTS TO USE, TRY PURE COCONUT OIL. THIS AMAZING INGREDIENT CAN BE USED FROM EVERYTHING FROM CLEANING TO MOISTURIZING TO TREATING DIAPER RASH. IT IS ANTI-FUNGAL AND VERY SOOTHING TO SKIN.
NATURAL BABY OIL (vitamin rich) Most regular baby oil is petroleum based and packed with artificial fragrances. Use plain coconut oil, or make an infused oil with added vitamins to enhance skin healing effects. Ingredients: 1 cup of organic olive or apricot kernel oil (great for sensitive skin) 2 tablespoons calendula flowers 2 tablespoons chamomile flowers (look for these on the tea aisle)
And Baby Makes Three... By Kathy Brüggemann, editor of www.mommymatters.co.za
Lately there have been two common issues coming up in conversations: the first is why marriages don’t work out and the second is how to feel like anything else other than a parent. Right from the start, it’s important to be aware of overcoming the inevitable hurdles that can challenge your marriage. Here are three tips to bear in mind while you grow your new family. 1.MAKE TIME to communicate – If something is bothering you, tell your partner, but make sure you do it at the right time. Starting a discussion about who left the dirty dishes in the sink when the baby is screaming and needs to be fed will solve nothing. Instead, plan a time to sit down together after baby is asleep. If you’re feeling less like the person you used to be, discuss ways you can still enjoy the activities that made you feel happy and alive. Realise that continuing with those things will make you a better parent. 2.SCHEDULE TIME together – Even though your baby has made you a family of three, the two of you still need alone time together. Because your lives are busier now, make space for that time by planning. Even if it’s just playing a game of cards together before bed, do something together where you connect. If nightime is impossible, touch base during the day, even if it’s via sms or email. You might just mention what you’re thankful for in the other person. It doesn’t always have to be a dinner date. Although proper dates (AND SEX!) is important, it’s also the simple things that will help you reconnect. 3.RESOLVE ISSUES and make peace – If you happen to argue in front of an older baby or child, make sure he or she sees you make up, too. That way, your child learns that fights don’t mean that people no longer love each other — this is an important part of your child’s development and impression of conflict resolution. As you enter this new stage of life as a family, staying focused on what really matters will help you through the rough spots. Remember that one of the best gifts you can give your child is a good relationship with each other.
Method: Heat half a cup of water over medium high heat in a double boiler or small sauce pan. Melt the oil in a glass bowl or double boiler top above the boiling water. Add the calendula and chamomile flowers and keep the heat going on low/ medium for at least an hour or until oil has started to turn yellow and smells of chamomile and calendula. Check the water level often and make sure it doesn’t get too hot or evaporate away. Strain the flowers and use as you would use normal baby oil.

Protect baby, protect the planet Every day we’re exposed to thousands of different chemicals. Babies and children are too. Young people, however, are even more sensitive to toxins in the environment than adults are. It’s been found that some chemicals can actually delay children’s development. Choose natural, organic and chemical-free products that are safer for your whole family and kinder to the planet.

aking your own beauty aids is filled with benefits. Besides being cost effective you can have great fun harvesting and experimenting with recipes. You also know for sure no harmful additives are used - there is no need to use preservatives as you can make a fresh batch on a weekly or even daily basis. What’s more, there is also something very special about knowing and tending to the plant that’s going to heal, nourish and beautify you. You might even want to decant your formulas into attractive bottles, make your own label and give them away as gifts. There isn’t anyone who wouldn’t love a bottle of skin toning rose water.

On this note, we enlisted Richard Morris from Starke Ayres for the best advice on how to make up a garden with flowers, plants and herbs for your very own DIY beauty products. We chose ten wonderful varieties with qualities to make cleansing, toning and healing balms suited for your beauty routine. These varieties all need similar soil and growing conditions so you can put them together. Find a space in your garden and start growing. Use pots or plant them directly into the garden. You can also use aromatherapy oils in the recipes instead of the plants but make sure to dilute the oils accordingly.
It was hard for an Apache-raised girl to understand how some could see the planet as but a lifeless rock, upon whose surface a bounty was distributed for the good of man. Who saw animals not as spirits but as steaks, fur and wool, pet or threat. Who saw trees only as lumber to be turned into buildings or offer shade from the sun, who judged plants as being decorative or itchy, weeds or crops. To us, they were not just wondrous sunshine-eating entities, without whom humans and most of the life on Earth would die. They were proof of miracles, and reason for hope, the inspiration for a good and balanced life, and examples of how to live it. They were her ever growing, ever reaching truth. They were the medicine she would need.

Aloe vera is known as a highly effective anti-ageing component. It soothes irritated skin, treats burns and is deeply moisturising. Use it on your body, face and hair. It has vitamins A, B, C and E and an abundance of minerals. Aloe Vera helps remove toxins that contribute to premature aging. When used as an astringent, it tightens the skin and prevents the development of wrinkles.
RECIPE FOR ALOE VERA GEL: With clean hands, cut off an outer aloe leaf, peel the outer layer of skin and scoop out the gel with a spoon. For every quarter cup of gel, add 500 mg of powdered vitamin C (you can crush tablets into powder) and 400 IU of vitamin E. Store this in a sterilized glass jar in the fridge. It will keep for several months. Apply daily to hair or skin. RECIPE FOR MASCARA: Empty an activated charcoal capsule* into a clean glass bowl. Add a quarter teaspoon of aloe Vera gel and mix together well. Use a mascara wand to apply. Make small quantities at a time as it only lasts a month. *Available from www.healthcart.co.za or www.shopmania.co.za
quote “I’m a third generation Hispanic folk healer, a curandero is the proper term...and we believe if you listen very carefully to the plants they will tell you many different things...when to harvest, if you should harvest, and how to use them. They also tell us how to heal an abused heart. In 20 years, I’ve never known a plant to be wrong. I’ve been wrong before, but not the plants.” Chuck Garcia, California Curandero
GROWING TIP ALOES NEED TO BE WATERED THOROUGHLY, AFTER WHICH THE SOIL MUST BE LEFT TO DRY BEFORE WATERING AGAIN. THIS DISCOURAGES ROT. ALOE PLANTS PRODUCE PLANTLETS OR BABIES THAT CAN BE USED TO PROPAGATE NEW PLANTS.
Chamomile helps fight acne and breakouts, and reduces scarring. Placing cool chamomile tea bags under the eyes can help reduce under-eye dark circles and eye puffiness. It also soothes tired eyes. Clear up blemishes by pouring a litre of chamomile tea in your bath, it will also help you relax.
Rosemary adds lustre and shine to hair and strengthens damaged hair shafts. It is rich in nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamins and antioxidants, is effective for many skin types and found in skin care cleansers, soaps, face masks, toners and creams. It has stimulant properties that refresh, rejuvenate and energise. Since it contains naturally powerful antioxidants, rosemary oil strengthens capillaries and helps to slow the effects of ageing. It also tightens sagging and loose skin stimulating cell growth to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Rosemary can be inhaled to enhance memory.
RECIPE FOR FACE SCRUB: Make a strong chamomile tea by boiling and reducing the water. Add 2 tablespoons to rice milk powder and mix into a paste. Use it on both your face and body.
RECIPE FOR ACNE: Use a few drops of rosemary oil mixed into your moisturiser to treat acne and skin conditions. It is anti inflammatory, reducing swelling and puffiness. It also helps to lighten dark spots and blemishes on the skin. Rosemary has been used for chronic skin conditions including dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.
SUNNY LOCATIONS ARE BEST FOR CHAMOMILE BUT THEY WILL MANAGE WITH A LITTLE BIT OF SHADE AS WELL. ALTHOUGH IT IS AN ANNUAL PLANT THAT ONLY LASTS A YEAR, IT READILY RESEEDS ITSELF IF YOU LEAVE A FEW OF THE BLOSSOMS ON THE PLANT.
RECIPE TO EASE JOINTS: Add freshly cut sprigs of rosemary to bath water to soothe aching muscles and joints and ease arthritis pain. To make rosemary tea, steep two teaspoons of dried flowers in a cup of boiling water for twenty minutes.
RECIPE FOR HAIR BRIGHTENING: Use a strong tea solution as a final rinse after conditioning hair. This will brighten blonde hair and add a golden shine to brown hair. Chamomile also prevents dandruff and soothes an irritated scalp.
GROWING TIP
Thyme has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Researchers from Leeds Metropolitan University in the UK found that topical applications of thyme are more effective in treating acne than standard creams with benzoyl peroxide and they don’t have harmful side effects.
RECIPE FOR HAIR RINSE: Boil a cup of rosemary into a concentrated solution and use as an after shampoo rinse.
GROWING TIP ROSEMARY IS EASY TO GROW, ONCE IT HAS TAKEN ROOT, IT WILL THRIVE FOR YEARS. IT ADAPTS TO MOST GROWING CONDITIONS AND IS QUITE HARDY. IT GROWS IN MANY DIFFERENT SOILS AND DOES BEST IN A WARM TO HOT, FAIRLY DRY CLIMATE. CHOOSE FULL SUN AND SOIL THAT DRAINS WELL.
Chamomile tea has amazing healing, anti-oxidant, cleansing and moisturizing properties and is considered an all round skincare treatment. It disinfects and accelerates the healing process of minor wounds. It is a natural skin-lightening agent and soothes irritation and sunburn. www.wellnesswarehouse.com
RECIPE FOR ANTI-AGEING MASK: Add 3 tablespoons of chopped thyme leaves to a quarter cup of yoghurt and 2 tablespoons of honey. Spread evenly over a clean washed face, leave for 15 minutes and rinse off gently.
GROWING TIP THYME IS A PERENNIAL HERB THAT NEEDS FULL SUN AND A DRY, GRITTY SOIL.

Lavender is soothing and antiseptic, excellent for burns, psoriasis infections and sensitive skin. Lavender oil can be rubbed into the temples to relieve a headache or can be diluted in a carrier oil and used to help with acne or skin irritations. RECIPE FOR FACE MIST: Decant cooled lavender tea into a spritzer bottle and use as a calming face mist. Alternatively use distilled water and few drops of lavender oil. RECIPE FOR TONER: Dilute a strong solution of lavender tea in a ratio of 3:1 with apple cider vinegar and use as a toner.
GROWING TIP LAVENDER NEEDS SUN AND CAN THRIVE IN DRY, POOR SOIL. WATER SPARINGLY AND AVOID FEEDING WITH RICH FERTILIZER.
Rosewater is anti-inflammatory and a gentle astringent, helping to stimulate circulation and reducing thread veins and broken capillaries. It purifies the skin and protects it from bacterial infections. A recent Japanese study found that inhaling rose essential oil decreased the effects stress had on the skin, like inflammation and redness. Use it to remove make-up, dirt and oil from skin, heal sunburn and wounds and maintain the pH balance of the skin. It has a calming effect on acne and skin discomfort. RECIPE FOR ROSE WATER: Pick your rose petals in the early morning, wash them with cool water and put them in a pot. Add enough distilled water to cover the petals. Cover with a lid and boil on low for about an hour. The water should change colour. Strain the petals and leave the resulting water to cool. Store in a glass container. Use with cotton swab as toner or spritz onto skin.
GROWING TIP TEA ROSES LIKE TO BE IN SUNNY POSITIONS SHELTERED FROM STRONG WINDS. THEY DON’T THRIVE IN THE SHADE OR IF CROWDED BY OTHER PLANTS. A WELLDRAINED SOIL IS IMPORTANT - ROSES WILL SUFFER IN WET SOILS
Comfrey is a great healing herb and moisturiser. It contains minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals that help reduce inflammation. It also has allantoin and tannins that help new skin cells form.
68
RECIPE FOR HEALING BALM: Stuff as many comfrey leaves as you can into a glass jar. Fill the jar with cold pressed olive oil. Leave it to stand for 6 weeks. Use the oil on dry hands, chapped lips, scrapes, burns or even eczema. For a thicker consistency, melt beeswax or cocoa butter and add it to the comfrey oil mixture.
GROWING TIP COMFREY CAN BE PLANTED ANYTIME DURING THE YEAR AND GROWS BEST IN RICH MOIST SOIL IN FULL SUN. IT IS VERY HARDY AND WILL SURVIVE MOST WEATHER. LEAVES CAN BE HARVESTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
of magnesium, an essential mineral active in ensuring good blood flow. Basil is widely used for its anti-inflammatory properties and has components that prevent swelling in the body. RECIPE FOR DETOX TONER: Crush a handful of basil leaves. Soak them in hot water. Allow the water to cool and splash onto your face as a detoxifying, circulation promoting toner. RECIPE FOR TINCTURE: Chop enough basil to fill a cup, add 2 cups of alcohol. Shake the mixture everyday for 4 weeks, strain the leaves and store in a dark jar. Dosage for Adults: 1 - 2 ml, two times daily.
Sage is rich in calcium and vitamin A. It is an astringent and tones oily skin treating enlarged pores and restoring elasticity. It stimulates cell renewal and increases blood circulation improving varicose veins by reducing redness and shrinking capillaries. By increasing blood circulation it also helps eliminate toxins in the body, which helps prevent the appearance of cellulite. Massage cellulite affected areas daily to help move toxins and fat cells. Sage oil is also an effective ingredient in deodorants inhibiting the action of sweat and saliva glands. A strong tea infusion can be used as an antiseptic mouth wash and gargle for inflammations in the mouth.
Evening primrose promotes healthy, rejuvenated skin. It contains linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid not produced by body. Use on skin to firm hydrate, help heal blemishes and reduce signs of lines and wrinkles.
RECIPE FOR CELLULITE BALM: Add 5 drops of sage oil to a small amount of massage butter and rub well into areas with cellulite.
RECIPE FOR REJUVENATION: Make a tea by boiling the leaves on the stove. Decant into a bottle and use as a toner in the morning and evening.
RECIPE FOR TONER: Make a concentrated tea with sage leaves by boiling and reducing in water. Add 3 parts of your tea to 1 part of apple cider vinegar. Use it as a toner or as a daily facial rinse.
GROWING TIP
GROWING TIP SAGE NEEDS PLENTY OF SUNSHINE, GOOD DRAINAGE AND GOOD AIR CIRCULATION. WATER SPARINGLY. WHEN PLANTS ARE SMALL MIST THEM WITH WATER TO KEEP THE SOIL MOIST.
Basil is detoxifying and promotes circulation. It helps combat the effects of external pollution and has antioxidant properties that can protect the body from premature ageing. Basil has the flavonoids orientin and vicenin, which are plant pigments that shield cell structures from oxygen and radiation damage. It is a source everything you need to live life well
GROWING TIP BASIL NEEDS WARM AIR, SUN AND WELLDRAINED SOIL. KEEP THE SOIL DAMP, BUT NOT SOAKED. WATER BASIL PLANTS ONCE A DAY, IN THE MORNING, SO WATER CAN SOAK IN OR EVAPORATE RATHER THAN REMAINING ON THE PLANT OVERNIGHT.
SOW THE SEED IN LATE SPRING. CHOOSE SOIL THAT IS WELL-DRAINED AND IN A SUNNY POSITION. THE TYPE OF SOIL ISN’T REALLY AN ISSUE PROVIDED IT DRAINS WELL. EVENING PRIMROSE WILL GROW IN COOL, WARM, HOT, ARID, PLACES; IT’S NOT TOO FUSSY. WATER UNTIL ESTABLISHED. DO NOT OVER-WATER.

Starke Ayres is a specialist in the vegetable and flower seeds industry with over 130 years of experience. The company supplies innovative, premium seed and associated products to the professional grower and home gardener throughout South Africa and internationally.
MAKE A POTTED HERB GARDEN WHAT YOU NEED: your choice of herbs; potting soil, bonemeal; pots; tools (gloves, spade, fork and watering can) You can plant your herbs directly into the ground but they also look fabulous in pots. 1. Start by taking your herb out of its plastic pot. You may want to wear gloves to do this but I prefer to use my hands as I believe this transfers energy to the plant. 2. Place your herb in a pot of your choosing. I love these terracotta one’s from Stark Ayres, especially as terracotta is environmentally friendly. 3. If the pot is too large for your plant, fill the spaces with a mixture of potting mix, bonemeal and peat moss. 4. Once you have potted all your plants, find a special place to put them. Make it somewhere you can chat to them daily and give them TLC. Remember that your herbs are there to be part of your beauty regime and seeing them everyday you will make sure they stay healthy. 5. Leave your herbs to establish themselves nicely before you start picking them.

scented soy candles
Beautifully scented soy candles that double as a healing skin balm Presented in attractive boxes, the heavenly scented candles are a ‘green friendly’ absolutely natural product with more than just ambient appeal. Soy is a longer burning alternative to standard wax that excludes paraffin oil and harmful chemicals. As a byproduct of soybean agriculture it also has renewable and green-friendly qualities. These candles can be used as a nourishing moisturiser by massaging the melted wax into the skin. As soybean burns at a lower temperature than normal wax you can pour the wax onto your hand and massage it onto your skin.

Cupping Therapy
• Chronic pain
I am extremely passionate about my work and especially about IMAGO Relationship Therapy. I have always felt that marriage and relationships provide us with the most powerful vehicle to do the work on ourselves and by default on each other if we are willing and able, and I have been blessed to see ‘miracles’ happening before my eyes on a number of occasions. Working with couples using IMAGO methodology is a major focus in my Practice and I find the work extremely challenging and almost always, satisfying and rewarding. It is my belief that communication, ultimately, is a function of the soul and that intuition is seeing with the soul. This is what guides and informs my life and my work. My goals in life are to become a better human-being and a great therapist and to develop into the person my dogs believe me to be. “Apologizing doesn’t mean you are wrong and the other right. It simply means you value the relationship much more than your ego.” 083 709 0467 www.followingmantis.co.za merlie@wam.co.za www.facebook.com/ImagoRelationshipCoachAnd Counsellor “The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” - M. Scott Peck
