publisher's letter This year has been a whirlwind of activity and happiness – it’s hard to believe that December is already here. But, I’m looking forward to some good rest and relaxation with my family and intend on taking time out from all my usual routines.

contents

With the glorious weather of this time of the year, swimming is definitely at the top of my list of must-do activities – this month in Move Well, we uncover the incredible benefits of a water work out – from swimming laps to buoyant relaxation. I’m looking forward to teaching my son Zac to become a true water baby over the holidays.

13 14

In Live Well, we explore interesting and creative ways to make your own gifts for this festive season – allowing you to offer your loved ones unique and thoughtful gifts infused with love and care. Also in Live Well, we list a myriad of fun ideas to increase your activity as a family, allowing you to enjoy quality time together and to instill a sense of fulfilment and togetherness. Treasure hunts and volunteering sound like a good idea to me.

22

Speaking of families, in Love Well, you’ll find a highly interesting therapy that uncovers hidden family dynamics, offering a freedom not often garnered from traditional therapy methods – and because December is all about family, I’d recommend you spend some time contemplating your roots and how your ancestry affects your life today.

26 38

In Look Well, we give you some great tips on how to present yourself in the best possible light for all those festive season parties. And, while you’re at those parties, we know that some indulgence will take place, so we’ve also listed tips to protect your liver and your digestive system. Once you’re sure you’ve protected your body from potentially a little too much fun, cook up a storm in the kitchen with a new twist on festive fare by throwing out old traditions and creating new ones – we feature some tasty recipes for some healthy indulgence.

42 46

I wish every one of you a safe and joyful December – thank you for all your support over the past year.

well said... WINNING LETTER Dear Editor I would like to say thank you to a fabulous magazine. I was at Wellness in Kloof street and searching for a particular product. The service was great. I got the ‘study plus’ Himalaya formula for my matriculant son and some Omega oils. I took a magazine on my way out and just loved reading it from front to back. There are so many useful and interesting articles in it. I loved the content especially ‘push your happy buttons’, emotional freedom and I am trying out all the healthy recipes. Superb, I must say, 11 out of 10 for this magazine. I will continue reading all the issues as I am a health fanatic and always researching health products. My next buy is going to be ‘turmeric root extract’ and ‘turmerynne’. I am turning 46 soon and need to keep old age at bay! I have the Palmyra branch near to me. Thank you so much, I am off to make the vegan carrot cake which looks so yummy. Happy Customer Kariema Davids

WE TRIED IT Flutter Those Lashes Rouxmia Bougas gets a new summer look with lash extensions. Here is her report. Everyone seems to be talking about lash extensions, how they give you an instant glam look and are so easy to manage. You can jump out of bed leave off the mascara and still look great. I went to the Petticoat Parlour in Green Point to try them out for the first time and I love the result. I haven’t really felt the need to wear make up since – it feels like I don’t need it. Natalie, the beauty therapist, said I happen to have the most lashes she has ever seen, so it took her 2 ½ hours to do mine. But it was really worth it. Everyone has commented on how nice they look. Some eyes are sensitive to the glue, but there are amazing anti histamine eye drops that take the redness away instantly and make your eyes feel very comfortable. The lashes are easy to maintain and great for swimming and beach days when you can’t really wear mascara. I highly recommend this as a fabulous summer beauty boost. Petticoat Parlour is known for their lashes. Petticoat Parlour Beauty Day Spa Suite1, 1st Floor Paramount Place, 105 Main Rd, Greenpoint, 8001. Tel: 021 434 9484 Full Set Lashes R580 (2 hours) and a 3 week in fill cost R310 (1.5 hours). Add glitter and gem lashes here and there for special occasions.

MEET OUR SUPPLIER

W

ho would think of employing a qualified Chef to whip up delicious home-made meals for their pup? Owner of Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition, Paul Jacobson, is just that.

“When we were growing up”, Paul said, “my mom always encouraged her three boys to cook and when I left school I first did an Honours degree in Marketing then went overseas and qualified as a Chef.” Perhaps it was his personality garnered from the nurturing family he came from but Paul couldn’t ever imagine giving his beloved pets food that came off a shelf. Preparing meals for his pets was time consuming though and when he met naturopath Elinor Keron who made special meals for animals he was stoked. “She had built up a client base of pets she cooked for adding special herbs and ingredients and it saved me time getting meals from her.” That was sixteen years ago and many conversations and planning led to expanding the service, obtaining the right licenses and scientific analysis to prove they had all the right nutrients and balances required and then opening Vondi’s. Vondi was the name of Elinor’s Belgium Shephard at the time. Elinor is a wellspring of nutritional knowledge and worldwide trends on feeding animals. Today, Vondi’s is one of the fastest growing food brands in the

10

Holistic Pet Nutrition

country. Selling pet nutrition and remedies requires compliance with international and South African law, which is rigorous in its stipulations, expectations and scientific demands. Vondi’s is a fully accredited supplier.

HOMEGROWN REMEDIES From food, the Vondi’s outlet expanded their range of services to homegrown natural remedies, especially those for skin disorders. Paul is very outspoken about the poisons people put on their dogs. Standard anti-tick and flea interventions are usually highly poisonous. Many of them come with warnings, require gloves for application and some will even burn holes in a table.”

Product labeling is often misleading, obscure or difficult to understand. Paul knows this well having done his thesis on the Fast Food industry. Enlightened beings acknowledge the positive impact that a natural, wholesome and organic diet can have on health and longevity. We are also cautious when using cosmetics and grooming products that contain chemicals and poisons. Yet, when it comes to our companion animals we don’t always apply these same principles of healthy living. No doubt, many of our pets struggle with health disorders. Caring for your companion holistically and naturally means circumventing potential health problems be it skin allergies, digestion or arthritis. It also promotes longevity and well being.

“Not only are they dangerous for the animals but damaging to those patting their pets. Time and again we have seen how effective our homegrown natural remedies can be. Something like Khakibos can be safely used on animals and their bedding. Farmers even use it on their strawberries and organic herbs. A client of ours uses it on her pet rat. That’s really our claim to fame, treating skin disorders with an holistic and wholesome approach.”

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP Whether food or remedies, companion animals are reliant on their owner’s informed choices. Rampant consumerism has made us lose touch with natural living. Corporate business embarks on major advertising campaigns that distract our intuition. everything you need to live life well

Paul Jacobson is a Pet Food Nutritionist, qualified chef and owner of Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition. He is a regular guest on Radio 702 and Capetalk and also writes magazine articles on natural and holistic pet care. Vondi’s was a finalist in the Nedbank/ Capetalk Small Business Awards for their contribution to animal welfare and care. Yet, when it comes to our companion

ALLERGIES

ROOIBOS HEALTH BISCUITS

The skin is the largest eliminatory organ in the body, which is why skin and coat problems are often the first indicators of poor health and care. Yet, almost every pet suffers from some sort of skin condition. Treating this with cortisone will not solve the problem. Skin allergies and conditions can be cured. All that’s needed is a holistic and natural treatment. In dealing with skin conditions it is important to avoid the use of chemical based shampoos and flea repellents. Not only are they toxic, but poisonous too.

Jenny Morris, one of South Africa’s most popular celebrity Chefs teamed up with Vondi’s to develop a range of health biscuits for dogs: completely natural and preservative free. Ingredients include fresh herbs, whole wheat flour, homemade chicken and veggie stock as well as Rooibos and mint to help ease itchy skin.

ROOIBOS FOR ITCHY SKIN

In an industry dominated by large multinationals with massive advertising budgets, the Vondi’s stance on correct natural feeding, using REAL meat, REAL veggies, olive oil and FRESHLY picked herbs, has found much popularity. Their food is also economically priced. Vondi’s is actively involved in educating the public on the nutritional rights of cats and dogs, and have had major success in curing the many common ailments and sickness we find nowadays. They are proudly South African, completely transparent and aspire to a code of good business ethics.

This wonderful infusion of Rooibos, Chamomile and Spirulina with grapeseed oil is brilliant for alleviating skin allergies, scratching and skin irritation. Taken orally, it is easy to administer over food or directly into the mouth.

BUCHU SOAP SCRUB Buchu is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The Buchu soap scrub alleviates the irritation and itch. This is a far better alternative to any shampoo. It also cleans and cools the skin.

STAR PRODUCT KHAKIBOS FLEA SPRAY Paul’s personal favourite product is the Khakibos Flea spray. Khakibos has always proven to be a great flea and tick repellent. Many older folk have stories how they used Khakibos to cover their carpets and curtains to repel fleas and ticks. Safe and natural, it can be sprayed directly onto your pet and pet’s linen.

Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition is a registered, balanced and complete diet formulated by top animal nutritionists using natural and wholesome ingredients.

4 IMPORTANT FACTS ON HOME-COOKED & NATURAL PET FOOD The pet food industry is dominated by the most powerful and influential multinationals. Through clever marketing and jargon they have instilled a sense of fear and doubt in the consumer that home-cooked, home-made or natural food is nutritionally inferior, dangerous and harmful. These are some of the issues people ask about when choosing home cooked food.

1. DENTAL HEALTH Many believe home cooked food won’t clean your pet’s teeth but dogs are gulpers. They swallow large chunks in one go and are not used to chewing pellets that form a paste between tooth and lip. They clean their teeth by chewing raw bones and chewies or at very least by swallowing their food whole and not having to chew.

time it may lead to Heinz Body Anemia (the thinning of the blood). For this to happen, you would have to feed your average size dog half a tub of garlic every day for a very long period.

3. STOOL QUALITY Some believe wet food will create sloppy stools. Stool consistency is not related to the dryness or wetness of the food you are eating but rather to how nutritionally sound and wholesome that food is. Natural, wholesome food produces correct stools that biodegrade quickly and perfectly.

4. BALANCED NUTRITION Quality, wholesome ingredients need to be cooked correctly. Pulses and grains, are better simmered on low heat. Meat should be seared and not over cooked. Green veggies, herbs and omega 3 oils should not be exposed to heat at all. Most commercial pellets cook all ingredients together exposing them all to equal high heat and this compromises nutritional values.

GRAINS – YES OR NO? Avoid refined, poor quality carbohydrates like bread, refined wheat and corn, cereals and gluten. Commercially processed pet food is mostly carbohydrate, with little meat content. High gluten grains and cereals are used to push up the protein composition. Gluten is a cheap protein ingredient and unsuitable for obligate carnivores like cats. Adding healthy grains to your pet’s diet will boost nutrition. GOOD GRAINS: Brown Rice, Millet, Buckwheat, pearl barley, split peas, lentils, raw oats, quinoa, etc. GRAINS TO AVOID: Wheat gluten, corn gluten, refined wheat and corn, brewer’s rice (left-overs from the breweries), soya meal, etc. Over thousands of years our pets have evolved to eat a balanced home prepared diet. Our dogs can no longer digest copious amounts of raw meat but prefer a diet rich in vegetables and nutritional pulses with reasonable quantities of quality meat.

2. GARLIC IS BENEFICIAL Margaret Roberts local herbalist recommends garlic for medicinal purposes and to get rid of fleas and ticks. Claims about garlic being harmful to our pets showed that if you gave your dog at least half a tub of garlic a day over a long period of www.wellnesswarehouse.com

The spirit of

GIVING

by Roddy Louther

This festive season, spend thoughts. Spend… yes, but spare a thought and spend wisely. Be generous of yourself.

O

n the radio, the late Michael Jackson was singing, “I saw momma kissing Santa Claus…” and just as I was thinking “what a wonderful world”, old Satchmo came up next singing exactly that. I realized the year is nearly at an end. This is the time when tiny hands clasp together before bed and whisper soft, candied pleas to, “Gentle Jesus, meek and mild…” for good health, safe travels and “Oh, please tell Santa not to forget…” The signs sneak up on you. Mom and dad hold clandestine talks that stop when you come along. TV adverts sell everything from turkeys and gammon to toys cars and new cars, vying for our jolly dollar. When Dad comes home with a big Christmas tree tied to the roof of his car, you knew the festive season had arrived. Soon grannies and grandpas, uncles and aunts, cousins and friends will come bearing gifts and food. Christmas is for children, but it is for grownups too - a time for hearts to open up. Christmas, and in a broader more inclusive sense, the festive season, is love in action. Christmas you see, is a state of mind. While living in the Middle East for 10 years I got to know many cultures outside my own Christian cocoon. It surprised me how everyone embraced the spirit of the season. One of our clients, Brigadier Al Marai, a kind, wise old Bedouin businessman and high-ranking official in the Police force, used to surprise me every year with a personal, timely delivered Christmas card and gift. You’d be astonished to see the malls of Dubai the day before Christmas. Muslims, Hindu’s, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, you name it, are out there frantically mall trawling for gifts.

12

Somehow we all have an appointment with Christmas. It examines us, and makes us examine ourselves. For many it is a time of great anxiety, loneliness and heartache and when the joy of family and goodwill doesn’t extend to you, it can be painfully isolating. Pope Francis recently said, “True charity requires courage: let us overcome the fear of getting our hands dirty to help those in need.” Since becoming head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has consistently called for open interaction with people from all walks of life, especially the poor, weak and vulnerable. His message is by no means new. Do you ever watch “The Secret Millionaire” on DStv’s, BBC Knowledge? In each episode a millionaire goes undercover into needy U.K communities to look for charities in need. At the end the millionaire reveals his or her identity and gives away tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of pounds to these charities. The millionaire’s are always so affected by the experience they frequently become patrons and continue to give. One such donor said: “I now have a new purpose in life, a new drive; that is to make more money, so I can give it away to charities.” Another proclaimed tearfully that he didn’t think he needed to make more money, until now. The gift of giving is indeed more precious than the gift, and you don’t have to be a millionaire either. One man in particular, Phillip Le Roux, a strong man in his mid seventies, regularly loads his car and trailer with boxes of food and clothes collected from benevolent folk. He travels hundreds of kilometers to the Karoo to distribute goods to poverty stricken communities in backwater towns. everything you need to live life well

He can hardly tell of the bleak, colourless existence of hungry people without breaking down. Their plight has become his plight. Christmas is a time of generosity and in this spirit I hope you extend invitations to those who might need it. Call up people who need generosity and love and invite them over to enjoy my delicious Norwegian Salmon stuffed with Kaffir Lime leaves and Galangal drizzled with a very secret sauce and festive salad. Personally, me and my daughter Aja have decided, on Christmas day, to help out at a charity. Even if it means I have to clean some elderly fella who didn’t make it to the loo in time, so be it. After all true happiness comes from making other people happy.

RECIPE

Norwegian Salmon stuffed with Kaffir Lime leaves & Galangal, accompanied by a very Secret Sauce with a Festive Salad by Roddy Louther

T

he salmon we got was huge and could easily feed 15 or more people – perfect for a feast. As you might imagine, the bigger the salmon is the longer it needs to cook. Ours was a 6 kg whopper and cooked for more than an hour.

NORWEGIAN SALMON stuffed with Kaffir Lime leaves and Galangal, accompanied by a very Secret Sauce with a Festive Salad

INGREDIENTS FOR THE SALMON 1 LARGE NORWEGIAN SALMON, HEAD AND TAIL INTACT – SCALED, GUTTED AND TRIMMED OF ALL FINS. 1 LARGE HANDFUL OF KAFFIR LIME LEAVES 1 LARGE GALANGAL ROOT SLICED (FRESH IS BEST BUT PICKLED OR DRIED THEN RE-HYDRATED WILL ALSO DO) OR 1 LARGE ROOT GINGER, SLICED 10 SMALL LIMES, SLICED 3 MEDIUM RED ONIONS, SLICED 1 LARGE BUNCH OF DILL 250ML WHITE WINE FOR THE SALAD 3 FRESH BABY GEM LETTUCE HEADS 1 BUNCH SMALL SALAD LEAVES, BEETROOT, MUSTARD 1 PKT POMEGRANATE ARILS 1 CAN SWEET CORN KERNELS

FOR THE SECRET SAUCE 350ML RICE WINE VINEGAR 1.5 CUPS SUGAR 3 KAFFIR LIME LEAVES 2 CHILLIES

FOR THE SALMON 1. Cut a piece of tin foil longer than the fish and rub the foil with plenty of butter. 2. Create a bed for the fish using some of the dill, onions, lime leaves and limes. 3. Place the salmon on its side on top of the bed. Stuff the stomach cavity with the rest of the onions, dill, lime leaves and sliced limes. 4. Use a second piece of foil to create a parcel for the fish. Before wrapping it all up pour the white wine over the fish, then seal the edges tightly. 5. Bake the fish in a pre-heated oven at 200ºC for half an hour to an hour depending on the size of the fish. FOR THE SALAD 1. Pull the outer leaves from the baby gem lettuce. They have a nice spoon shape. 2. Add some baby salad leaves in the hollow. 3. Spoon some corn kernels inside, then some pomegranate arils. 4. Just before serving, drizzle with Secret Sauce. FOR THE SAUCE 1. Slice the chilies open lengthwise but keep them whole. Put them in a small saucepan along with the lime leaves, sugar and rice wine vinegar.

2.

Reduce over high heat until you get a syrupy consistency. Remove lime leaves and chillies.

3.

The secret sauce is called that because it should be as clear as water and so invisible. It usually delights people because the source of the sweet and sour is a mystery, then the chili kick which follows slightly afterwards is another surprise. Delicious!

TIPS •

ONCE THE FISH IS COOKED, PLACE ON A LARGE SERVING PLATE AND MAKE DEEP CUTS ALONG ITS SIDES TO INDICATE PORTIONS. DRIZZLE THE SECRET SAUCE INTO THE CUTS, RESERVING SOME IN A SERVING JAR. SERVE WITH HERB BUTTERED BOILED POTATOES OR MASH, AND GARNISH WITH THE BABY GEM LETTUCE SPOON SALAD.

How to deseed a Pomegranate, quickly and easily: 1. 2. 3.

Using a sharp pairing knife, cut the through the outer skin of the fruit. Twist the two halves in opposite directions till they separate. Over a bowl, hold one half in a cupped hand then smack the fruit vigorously with a wooden spoon, the kernels will collect in the bowl. Remove the unwanted bits.

Create an indulgent feast using healthy ingredients with varied tastes to satisfy all your taste receptors.

The big did you know? Humans have been cultivating and using saffron for more than 3,500 years –the essential oil of the plant is believed to be an aphrodisiac and to enhance your existing mood or state of mind. Saffron is also used in potions and sachets designed for inciting love or lust.

feast

It’s the time of the year when tables are destined to be laden with food offerings.

W

hile tradition has its merits, it can be a little tough-going keeping up with Gran’s pièce de résistance each year. This year make indulgence healthy with a bit of planning and the right ingredients. If you’re staying at home this year, why not go on a global food journey by putting a little international nuance in your menu.

Yellow is the colour of sunshine and is generally considered a happy colour – you could tone it down with an elegant gold if primary yellow is a bit too much of a colour blast.

COLOUR ME HUNGRY

Orange is a brain stimulant, so having orange in your theme could invite stimulating dinner conversation. It’s also known to make people feel welcome.

Red, the weapon of choice used in restaurants to stimulate appetite, actually does increase appetite.

Create a welcoming table setting, make your guests feel comfortable, calm, happy, and most importantly, ready to eat by looking at the colour scheme you use on your table setting: •

Turquoise is an appetite stimulant and is connected to feeling happy and carefree.

Green oozes health and is associated with abundance – check the hue, everything you need to live life well

though – too bright and it may be sickening; too dark and you’re on the wrong end of the ‘healthy’ scale.

A key element of getting your digestive system to work effectively is mindfulness.

Fire up your belly If you know you’re going on a food journey that will put your will power to the test, prepare your digestive system well.

did you know? More than 2000 digestive enzymes are involved in digestion and other important bodily functions. These enzymes are produced when you eat.

22

W

hile discipline in eating is a good practise, there are times when relaxing hard-and-fast rules is really okay. This festive season social gatherings may require you to do justice to any number of heavy meals, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer the consequences.

everything you need to live life well

8 TIPS FOR

GOOD DIGESTION >

eatwell

healthy foodmarket

DO YOU MIND? From ancient Eastern disciplines to modern psychology, one of the key elements in easing your digestive system into working effectively is mindfulness. That means truly experiencing the food you eat – inhale the aromas, examine the feast with your eyes and observe colours and textures – all before you even begin tasting the fare. Chew each bite well and experience the tastes – much like a wine connoisseur. Ayurveda expert, Larissa Hall Carlson, says,

“In Ayrurveda, the mindfulness of eating is more important than what we eat. Changing the way people approach food really affects gas, bloating and indigestion.” It’s the curse of modern life that sees most people wolfing down their food with little real enjoyment. Eating or drinking quickly is almost guaranteed to cause indigestion, as you tend to gulp in air with whatever you are consuming. Also, not chewing thoroughly creates so much more work for your stomach – it’s generally recommended to chew each mouthful up to 50 times. To slow your eating pace, put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls.

TIP ASSIST YOUR GUESTS WITH THEIR DIGESTION BY CREATING A CALM, RELAXING ATMOSPHERE WHERE THERE’S NO NEED TO HURRY THE MEAL.

8 TIPS FOR GOOD DIGESTION 1. Hydrate When your body is well hydrated, it’s easier for food to pass through your digestive system. Iced water though, isn’t that easy for your body to process because it has to work to heat up the water before while going through your system. So if you are drinking water before a meal, sip it warmed or at room temperature.

2. Spicy Turmeric is known to reduce inflammation and it also stimulates the production of bile by the gallbladder, which improves digestion and reduces bloating or gas. It

is also believed to increase mucin in the stomach, which prevents ulcers. Add a pinch of turmeric to your meals, or take a daily supplement to assist good digestion.

3. Sweet stuff Liquorice root protects your stomach lining against excess acid. It can be taken in supplement form and is most effective when taken 1-2 hours before meal time.

ADD TO THE MENU Keep good digestion on the menu by adding some of the following to the table: •

Pineapple and papaya both contain proteolyctic enzymes that promote good digestion and contain anti-microbial and anti-ulcerative properties, helping the body break down food. It is not recommended to eat fruit after a meal so eat it beforehand or on its own.

Peppermint is known to assist with digestion – add fresh mint leaves to your table water or chew a few leaves after eating.

Beetroot is a festive favourite and a great idea to include in your menu; it’s rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals and assists with promoting healthy gut lining and regular bowel movements.

Avocados are well digested by just about everyone. They’re rich in healthy fats and fibre and promote digestive flow. They also help maintain a healthy pancreas, gall bladder and liver – three organs that assist in body cleansing.

4. Green energy Aloe vera is a great foil against stomach irritation or constipation. Add some to your morning smoothie, or supplement with 500mg about an hour before you eat. Too much can cause diarrhoea, so use in the right quantity.

5. Amino acid Glutamine is an amino acid commonly found in sports supplements as it’s great for preventing muscle breakdown. It also protects your stomach by maintaining the villi (absorption surfaces of the gut).

6. Tea time Drinking a cup of warm ginger tea is a well-known practise to aid digestion. Don’t make the tea too strong, as it can taste a bit burny.

7. Fibre When you know you’re scheduled for an indulgent meal, prepare your body by eating high fibre food the meal before to give your digestive system a kick start.

8. Herbal Fennel eases gas by inhibiting spasms. For quick relief, supplement with around 900mg.

did you know? In Ayurvedic medicine, it’s believed when the sun is at its highest point of the day, digestive fire is the strongest. Our bodies are a reflection of what’s happening in nature so a large, indulgent lunch will always be better for you than a huge dinner.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

If a highly laden table seems overwhelming, simply take your time to fully experience the food on offer – be grateful for what is placed in front of you and be aware of what your body can and can’t handle. If you are tempted to eat ‘just one more’ plate or mouthful, take a few deep breathes before dishing up seconds to give your stomach and brain time to communicate.

Knowing what your liver does will bring more respect for this fabulous organ and inspire you to take more care of it.

Healthy liver

for LIFE

By Gabriel Byrne

An indulgent festive season means an increased toxic load on your liver which is probably already burdened by lifestyle habits. From dietary awareness to supportive supplements and lifestyle practices take some advice on not only surviving the silly season but maintaining a clean, healthy liver for life.

26

everything you need to live life well

bewell

integrative health

M

ost people, when asked, will confess to having only a sketchy idea of what their liver actually does. Weighing roughly 1.5kg, it is the second largest organ in the human body after the skin; it is the only internal organ able to regenerate, and even largely re-grow itself. Admittedly, its ways do seem rather mystifying, especially when compared with the clear-cut duties of the other vital organs: the heart, brain and lungs. Various cultures in the past have regarded it as the seat of the emotions, the residence of the soul, and even the source of bravery. In fact the word isibindi means both liver and courage in Zulu.

3 MAIN LIVER FUNCTIONS 1. To store vitamins and minerals 2. To clean impurities and toxins from the body 3. To help metabolise nutrients into living matter

The life of a liver Knowing what your liver actually does will bring more respect for this fabulous organ and inspire you to take more care of it. Here are some of its functions. TOXINS: The liver modifies or breaks down toxins (drugs, alcohol, pesticides, preservatives, and most medicinal products) in a process called drug metabolism. IMMUNITY: plays a vital role in the body’s immunity by removing antigens and bacteria from the blood. CHOLESTEROL: controls the production and removal of cholesterol and metabolises fats. HORMONES: breaks down various hormones including insulin and oestrogen. PROTEINS & AMINOS: synthesises, metabolises, and degrades (breaks down and disposes) proteins and amino acids. CARBS & SUGARS: breaks down and metabolises carbohydrates and sugars.

BLOOD: produces coagulants that prevent excessive bleeding; it also produces thrombopoietin (a hormone that regulates the production of red blood platelets by the bone marrow); and helps to regulate blood pressure. BILE: produces and excretes bile (a yellowish liquid) which homogenises fats and helps vitamin K absorption. UREA: converts ammonia (toxic) to urea. STORAGE: stores a multitude of substances: glucose; vitamin A (up to 2 years’ supply); vitamin D (up to 4 months’ supply); vitamin B12 (up to 3 years’ supply); vitamin K; iron and copper.

EAT MORE ORGANIC Lighten the toxic load by totally avoiding an unbelievably long list of chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, growth hormones other drugs we otherwise blithely consume.

ANTIOXIDANTS These are molecules that prevent oxidization and neutralise free radicals. (Oxidization damages healthy cells and triggers cancerous cell changes. Free radicals weaken the immune system and accelerate the aging process.) Have more: grapefruit, broccoli, blueberries, tea, walnuts, edamame, bananas, kiwi fruit, and cacao.

BETA CAROTENE Stimulates liver cell growth and protects the liver from toxins.

LEMON Lemon juice stimulates bile production which emulsifies fats and pushes toxins out.

WATER Lots of water is crucial to help the liver flush toxins out.

AVOID SUGAR Is as harmful as alcohol to your liver. Watch out for added sugar in fruit juices and tinned food.

FAST FOODS Usually loaded with bad fat, starch and sugar.

PRESERVED MEATS Sausage, bacon, corned beef, etc contain damaging preservatives, cholesterol, and flavourings.

BAD FATS Deep fried foods, fatty red meat, margarine, trans fats (common in processed foods), hydrogenated oils, and shortening.

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS Including food colourants, and flavourings.

Noteworthy antioxidants are: SELENIUM: garlic, onions, Brazil nuts

BE PRO-ACTIVE

Your liver performs over 500 separate functions. Some of the more significant one’s are: regulating metabolism, controlling cholesterol, preventing infection, and most importantly, clearing your body of harmful toxins that you consume (and even those you inhale).

Use medications cautiously wrong doses or if taken with alcohol or other drugs can cause serious harm. Parecetamol, even when used correctly, has a negative impact on the liver.

NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD) Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or NAFLD is the most prevalent chronic liver disease in Western countries. People susceptible to this condition include those with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and those who are overweight. Even though only little or no alcohol is consumed the disease presents the same features seen in cases of chronic alcoholic liver disease. Fat accumulates in the liver which becomes chronically inflamed, eventually leading to permanent liver damage, cirrhosis, carcinoma, and fatality. NAFLD has also been identified as a triggering factor causing liver cancer and heart disease. Look after your liver and reduce the risk of developing this disease.

WHY CHOOSE VIBRANT HEALTH? Vibrant Health’s products provide supplemental nutrition that supports human biochemistry. The steady decline in trace nutrient value of our fresh foods has, in the opinion of Vibrant Health, established a mandate for supplemental nutrition. We believe supplemental nutrition is no longer an option; it is instead a necessity if one hopes to achieve robust and vibrant health.

Vibrant Health seeks to assist through supplemental nutrition the healing of illness and the establishment of optimum health, as well as to design and market the most efficacious nutritional food supplements for the benefit of all men, women and children. Vibrant Health only source the finest materials they can find, putting quality ahead of their cost. They are constantly on the lookout for better materials with the aim of designing evolutionary formulas to make sure they stay ahead of the times. “There’s no doubt that we think differently from the rest of the nutrition industry. We don’t wish to be seen as a traditional nutraceutical brand. We strive to be seen as a brand built “on” science and “by” the efficacy of our formulations. And that’s why we must use these principles and practices as lampposts to guide our decisions and to keep us focused on our Mission.” Mark Timon

Mark Timon, founder and formulator of Vibrant Health says: “You have our respect. You are the person we serve. You deserve to know precisely what is in each dietary supplement you buy. That is why you will find NO misleading proprietary blends in any Vibrant Health product. We’ve used full disclosure labelling since 1976, and always will. It’s your right to know!”

Whole Food Supplements

Vibrant Health use whole food supplements, designed for the body, the way nature intended. Vibrant Health nutritional supplements are based on whole food nutrition, as Mark believes that we were designed to absorb our nutrients from food, as opposed to “nature identical” nutraceuticals. Many of the chemical supplements on the market are not recognised or absorbed well in the body. The best supplements are whole food supplements obtained by taking vitamin rich plants and capturing the vitamin complex in a chemical free process, to retain the vitamin’s function and nutrient integrity. The basic principle that explains the difference between a synthetic vitamin and whole food vitamin is that when you isolate a nutrient or vitamin out of the food complex within which it is naturally found and where it is inseparably bound to thousands of known and unknown food factors (enzymes, proteins, chaperones, glyconutrients etc.) it is no longer beneficial to life. Ascorbic acid is not vitamin C, just like Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E and Ketinoic acid is not vitamin A. Vitamins are NOT individual molecular compounds – they are biological complexes; multi-step biochemical interactions whose action depends on many factors. Vitamin activity ONLY takes place when all co-factors or components of the entire vitamin complex are present and working together as found in organic food.

The Science of Nature - Educational How Green Coffee Bean Extract Compliments Weight Management

NO artificial colourants

Dr.Boxall’s Green Coffee Beans have an active ingredient called chlorogenic acid. This acid is the key to its weight loss benefits, as it signal your liver to burn stored fat FIRST. It also slows the processing of sugar into glucose, so there is less of it in your blood. This makes for more fat burning, and excess glucose does not turn into fat later.

100% certified, pure & authentic

How Raspberry Ketone(s) Compliments Weight Management

Dr. Boxall’s Raspberry Ketone(s), or RK, is believed to stimulate the production of adiponectin, a hormone found in fatty tissue that improves our ability to metabolize fat and furthermore reduce fat intake.

NO added fillers

How Hoodia Gordonii Compliments Weight Management

The active ingredient identified in Hoodia is a steroidal glycoside that has been called "p57". This molecule “p57” increases hypothalamic ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Increased ATP triggers a message to your brain of satiety and eliminating the need to consume food in order to boost glucose levels, thus eliminating the desire to eat.

We have much to be grateful for, and much to celebrate.

CELEBRATING GOOD CHOICES S

ummer is a season of celebrations, of both beginnings and endings. The cold wet days of winter are behind us with (mostly) sunny skies ahead. We’ve come to the end of the school, university and work year and a relaxing holiday awaits. We also celebrate the end of the Gregorian year, with a new one full of hope and potential to follow. Most importantly we celebrate life - another year in this spectacular complex physical body, on this wonderfully enriching planet, another year to grow and evolve, another year to move beyond our fears towards our highest potential. We have much to be grateful for, and much to celebrate. Yet when faced with the question of how to celebrate, why is it we often tend to choose actions and traditions that are neither self-honouring nor healthpreserving? Why has it become socially acceptable, and even justifiable, for us to take a voluntary downgrade in our health status in the name of the festive season? Why do celebrations have to be a “win” for our mental and emotional states and a

34

“lose” for our body? Why do celebrations bring not only love and laughter, but also high-calorie, nutrient-poor, trans-fat-rich, alcohol-laden, chemical-ridden, proinflammatory foods? We humans are notorious at playing down the repercussions of our lifestyle choices on our health. We tend to pooh-pooh the idea that the extra serving of dessert, the additional glass of wine or the skipped activity session will cause any harm.

“It’s the holiday season, I deserve it” is something I often hear. What is it you deserve I question: the initiation of an inflammatory process that may lead to new health problems? A flare-up of your current health concerns? Metabolic confusion from the mixed signals between those for joy and upliftment through celebration, and those for imbalance and destruction through poor choices? Why don’t you deserve to get healthier and more resilient through the festive season? Why don’t you deserve a win-win outcome? Why don’t we remember that our well-being does not go on holiday when we do. everything you need to live life well

Dr Yesheen Singh

My challenge to you over this festive season is to make healthier choices choices that empower you today by taking responsibility for your life and well-being. Choices made today that sow the seeds for the state of health you wish to reap in the future. The length of time between action and outcome, for example cutting out coffee today to ‘obtain’ better bone health in ten years, is often a stumbling block as we find it challenging to relate everyday decisions to their future repercussions. Imagine how different the world would look if we all got violently ill every time something containing sugar or refined carbohydrates was consumed? Cardiometabolic diseases would disappear and the incidence of heart attacks and other cardio-inflammatory events would decline. But this is not the reality we inhabit and the primary responsibility lies with us and how we choose to walk through life. Choose to walk this journey with self-compassion and selfnurturing.

Ayurveda for you KEEP YOUR LIVER HEALTHY WITH AYURVEDA Bhringaraj (Eclipta alba) has similar properties to the well-known Western liver herb, dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). This Ayurvedic herb not only provides support for liver-related problems, including skin disorders, but also is suggested to improve poor digestion of fatty food and to help with anemia and lymphatic congestion. Some Ayurvedic liver medicines are already familiar to the Western world. These include garlic (Allium sativum), aloe vera (Aloe vera), and barberry (Berberis vulgaris), which are often combined with the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa). Along with the use of these natural remedies, it is also important to avoid foods that cause damage to the liver. Consuming foods that are refined or heavily processed with a large number of additives and too many medications, means the liver has to work overtime to tackle the chemical load, and this causes damage. Foods rich in hydrogenated oil, artificial sweetening agents and alcohol places greater load on the liver.

L

iver congestion is among the leading health problems in the world. What’s more, it usually takes many years of chronic liver congestion before liver damage becomes apparent. This is because liver enzyme levels in the blood only show when there is advanced liver cell destruction. Someone could have a liver problem for years and have physical complaints but the liver enzyme levels in the blood won’t show until it is fairly advanced. Ayurveda tells us the liver is responsible for converting clear plasma (Rasa Dhatu) to blood (Rakta Dhatu). It is the liver’s job to scan and identify toxins in the Rasa Dhatu and store them so they don’t enter rakta. This keeps the purity of the blood by stopping ama, impurities (ama), from mixing with it. Because the liver is such an important organ for most essential bodily functions Ayurveda recommends various dietary, daily routines and herbal formulas to support its healthy

functioning. With modern-day food and lifestyles (think of junk food, alcohol, smoking, stress and medication) we put greater pressure on the liver causing health problem from allergies and migraines to obesity and indigestion.

Eat foods like beans, green vegetables (especially bitter salad greens and cabbage family), sweet fruits, whole grains (especially oats and barley) and fresh dairy (in moderation).

HEALTHY LIVER HERBS Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) literally means ‘bring back to life’ or ‘renewer’. Similar to its name it rejuvenates the liver.

Cut back on heating foods including oil, salt, hot spices, fermented food (alcohol, vinegar), tomatoes, egg yolks, coffee, red meat, refined flour and sugar.

Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) promotes regeneration of the liver and protects it from disease. It is one of the best herbs for longterm liver health. Its tonic properties benefit the entire body, especially the immune system. It is beneficial for people of all constitutional types, making it one of the safest herbs to use.

Minimize exposure to chemicals of all sorts from food additives and cosmetics to caustic cleaning agents.

Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus amarus) is a bitter herb that helps protect the liver. Traditionally used to care for liver-related indigestion, hepatitis, and jaundice in children, it is also useful for viral infections.

Take time to breathe deeply, relax, meditate, or pray. Stress can aggravate liver congestion. By keeping your liver healthy, you can enjoy mental and physical energy, clear skin, and a healthy natural immunity. If life is worth living, it depends upon the liver!

Clinically proven: 185 published clinical trials!

Who needs Liv.52®? Key Herbs We all Do! Here’s why: We are aware that alcohol, cigarettes, formaldehyde are commonly known toxins to the liver. But there are many more substances that can be toxic to the liver such as foods like fried potatoes, artificial sweeteners, drugs like acetaminophen, antiretroviral & anti-TB drugs and fuel exhaust just to name the few. In year 2006 South Africa alone imported $170 million worth of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides that were packaged for retail. These pesticides are used in almost every facet of our everyday lives; ensuring the quantity and quality of food we eat, to managing the number of rodents and insects in our homes.

All of This Taxes The Liver! Thanks to the liver, body’s natural detoxification facility. The liver is the body’s largest organ and performs various functions every day. It removes harmful toxins from the blood, makes bile to help digest fat, and stores energy. The liver needs a support, too.

Why Liv.52®? • Liv.52® supports health of the liver by restoring liver cell functions • Liv.52® also supports the liver’s functioning when challenged by toxins not just in our food, water and air, but also in forms of medication • Liv.52® does not interfere with medication when taken together • Liv.52® supports liver’s normal ability to burn fat and help support the body’s metabolic processes • Liv.52® helps normalize liver enzyme levels and the liver’s ability to regenerate itself • Liv.52® helps liver rapidly eliminate acetaldehyde, the toxic-by product of alcohol consumed

Maxmise on family activities to create bonding experiences that last a lifetime

TOGETHERNESS While the December holidays offer wonderful late mornings and long walks on the beach opportunities, there’s also the matter of keeping your children engaged in activities that don’t involve sitting in front of the TV all day.

38

everything you need to live life well

livewell green living

I

t’s well known by psychologists that spending quality time together as a family is one of the key elements in building up healthy families. Maximise on your family activity by planning regular outings that will keep you all engaged and offer a sense of fulfilment and fun for everyone.

BACK TO BASICS Remember hopscotch? A little bit of chalk does the trick and can easily be washed off a driveway or paving. Create different patterns and levels of difficulty for the whole family. Your children will enjoy the slight ‘taboo’ of being allowed to draw on something other than paper.

In every conceivable manner, FUTURE FUN Create a time capsule of your family as it is the family is a link to our past, right now – set a date for two or more years in the future when you’ll dig up whatever and a bridge to our future. Alex Haley

was hidden. Ask each family member to write a note to their future self, explaining what they love and are doing right now. Get each person to put a favourite thing, or something that represents what they love right now into a shoes box or flask. Find a safe place to hide or bury the capsule.

ON THE HUNT

VOLUNTEER As a family, find a charity that could do with a little help and volunteer for a day. If you’re a family of animal lovers, pop in to your local SPCA to see what help they may need. You could also volunteer to clean up a river nearby and involve your neighbours in the project. Get the kids to create a play or musical and take the production to a local retirement or nursing home.

Create a scavenger or treasure hunt in and around your home. Use clues that relate to your family, inside jokes or sayings, and keep everyone going with little treats hidden with each clue or a grand prize at the end – this could be anything from a family movie night, to simply staying up an hour later than usual.

NOW YOU’RE COOKING

One of the secrets to happy families is ritual, or tradition. It doesn’t have to be religious or even serious – for example, having a special breakfast together every Saturday morning is enough to create a bonding, shared experience that’s especially reserved for your family.

There’s a worldwide trend happening at the moment that involves a fun and interesting treasure hunt that’s available to anyone. Go to www.geocahing.com to find a cache near you. The site will give you the GPS coordinates which might include some kind of trinket and a logbook, where you can write down who you are and where you’re from. The key is to replace the trinket and log book, however, you can take the trinket as long as you replace it with another one for the next person to find. It’s a great way to get in and around a city and makes for a good day of adventuring.

Teach your children how to make a favourite family recipe. Set up a ‘cooking school’ scenario and give each person enough ingredients to make the dish for one. Chat about the history of the dish – for example if it came from a favourite greataunt, chat about her story. You could also decide to create a new family recipe, one that everyone is involved in developing.

STORY TIME

did you know?

GEOCACHE

Make up a story of adventure together – create characters and scenarios – and then go for a hike or walk in the great outdoors, while acting out the characters and scenarios you’ve created. Dress in character too if you’re able.

RE-DECORATE Choose a room you’d like to change. If you aren’t keen on a major renovation, even just moving furniture and knick-knacks around will have an impact. Get everyone involved in the decisions on colour, placement and style. This will encourage creativity, cement the feeling that home belongs to every family member, and allow a sense of achievement once the room is complete.

did you know? Asking for help is difficult for many people. Asking for help not only gives you much needed assistance, but it also empowers and validates the person you ask. It’s a winwin situation, so teach your children they don’t have to do it all alone. Get them to practice going into a store and asking a question. 39

PULLING CRACKERS

By Astrid Kille

There’s something very satisfying about crafting your own DIY project, especially when it comes to making Christmas crackers and you get to choose the little gifts you put inside. You can choose anything from miniature incense sticks to lip balm, a crystal or pendant, key ring or whatever takes your fancy.

H

ere is a step-by-step easy process to create tailor made Christmas crackers.

MATERIALS NEEDED CARDBOARD, SCISSORS, STICKY TAPE, RAFFIA PAPER, BANG STRIPS, WRAPPING PAPER, TISSUE PAPER, A DECORATION, A GIFT AND A JOKE OR PROVERB.

1

Step 1 Make your Christmas hat. Cut a piece of tissue paper into 12 cm x 24cm then cut Triangular shapes into the top edging to make a crown, then stick the 12cm edges together ready to wear on your head. Tip: when cutting the V shapes fold the paper up so you cut through a few layers at a time

Step 2 Cut a piece of cardboard into a rectangle measuring 10cm x 20cm. Roll it into a cylinder, and stick the edge together with tape.

2

3

Step 3 Decide which gift you want to include in your cracker.

Step 4 Fold up your hat and put the gift, the bang strip and hat into your cardboard cylinder. Write out a joke, a saying or a blessing on a piece of paper and include this in your cracker.

4

5

Step 5 Cut your wrapping paper into an 18cm x 34cm piece. Wrap it around the cylinder and stick it down with tape.

Step 6 Tie some raffia string onto each end of the cylinder to pull the paper in. Cut the end of the cracker into V shapes if you want an extra design. Stick a decoration on the cracker. All the supplies needed including the bang strip come from Merry Pak and Print. www.merrypak.co.za 45 Morningside Rd, Ndabeni, Cape Town. Tel: 021 531-2244

CELEBRATING SELFLESS SERVICE Finding meaning in life, giving back to those less fortunate and sharing our knowledge, skills and passion with others, is something many people desire to do.

S

eva, the Sanskrit word meaning ‘selfless service’ is actually one of the paths of yoga, although it is sometimes overlooked in the Western expression of yoga. In times where people are facing many challenges, both personally and collectively, doing acts of Seva can be a powerful way to lift oneself and others above these difficult times. With Seva yoga, it is not only about what we do, but about a way of being in the world which constantly asks the question: “How can I help, how can I make a difference, how can I be of service?” Imagine if we all started living from this place…

The Earthchild Project is a local NonProfit Organisation working in schools in Khayelitsha and Lavender Hill. Seva is often experienced here, where local and international volunteers apply to teach yoga, dance, art and environmental education. One volunteer recently shared, “I wanted to give something back to the community and because I love dance, I felt that that was the best way to do that! I also know that dance brings people, and especially children so much joy. It is the perfect way to uplift them.”

Walking is a meditative process. By taking one step at a time for hours and days on end, something magical is bound to happen. Moving in nature is healing and therapeutic.

Walking into HAPPINESS To commemorate the life of her beloved mother, Susanne Schubert set off on an 800km pilgrim walk along the Camino Francés in Spain. In the process she had life changing experiences that both transformed her grief and gave her a new lease on life. This is her story.

I

t took me in total 29 days to finish, walking an average of 28 km per day, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the route and how I was feeling. When I lost my beloved mother to cancer, my world fell apart. I always imagined she would be there ‘forever’, but after diagnosis, eleven months later she was gone. We had been incredibly close and in touch almost every single day. I had no idea how long my journey of grief would take. Three years after her passing, I decided to walk the Camino. I chose to make it a happy walk that celebrated my mother’s life and our lives together. It would be a walk of remembrance and reflection, yes, but as well a walk of love and joy.

Travel light Months of preparation included getting the right equipment and talking to fellow pilgrims. Sifting through countless words of advice, two things stood out: travel light and walk alone.

46

In August 2012 I arrived in the beautiful medieval town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and instantly fell in love with my Camino. It felt so right. Early the next morning, I left for Roncesvalles with two fellow pilgrims. There was a strange mix of walking in solitude yet also meeting amazing people. Former pilgrims described how you can walk for hours without seeing a single soul and then suddenly in the next village at the bar, be surrounded by people. Along the way it felt like the pilgrimage was guided by a higher power that drew people together for a reason. I practiced my Spanish, words I used with never-ending enthusiasm were ‘café con leche’ (coffee with milk) and ‘bocadillo’ (sandwich). Apart from the bocadillos nature provided so much along the Way. Blackberries grew everywhere prompting sweet childhood memories of my parent’s garden. Figs were ripe and pink, ready to be eaten from the trees. The abundance of God’s gifts all around me was magic.

everything you need to live life well

Each evening as I wrote in my diary, I thought of who I would dedicate the following day to. Obviously my overriding focus was my mother but I also thought of my father who died when I was only fourteen. Walking the ancient pilgrim path relived so many memories with people dear to me, happy and sad, and thousands of thoughts came and left my mind. That is the advantage of being constantly in motion, you cannot get too attached to one thought or feeling and this is what life is all about. Sometimes I sang, singing in the peace of nature was therapeutic. I felt my arms were not wide enough to embrace the world. I often prayed, either in the many Spanish churches along the way or simply while walking.

Magic of the Camino A lot of transformation happens on the Camino. A pilgrim who walked the Way for the second time told me, ‘The first part is physical, the second emotional and the third spiritual’. I had a similar experience.

livewell journey

Right in the beginning I battled with blisters, my rucksack, snorers and even bedbugs. Cruz de Ferro, 540 km into my journey, was a turning point. A conversation with one of the monks at the albergue in Rabanal, prepared me for the purpose of my journey. It is traditional to leave a rock at the huge iron cross at Cruz de Ferro as a symbol for something you want to let go of. I had a stone from Lion’s Head and something that belonged to my mother. I sat at the cross for a while and cried. When I walked on, I felt different. I felt released from pain. I felt immense relief and gratitude and at the same time, a zest for life. Arriving on Day 29 in Santiago de Compostela was incredible. The following day in this lovely bustling city was one of the best days of my life. How do I describe the rainbow of emotions? I was so happy and proud. Never will I forget the pilgrim mass, the chanting of the nun and the giant incense burner Botafumeiro swinging above me in a beautiful cathedral. When I look back on my journey, I marvel at how my grief transformed over the 800km I walked. I emerged so much lighter having let go of many dark elements. Being in nature, exposed to the elements, and walking a sacred path, which millions have done before me, was a life altering spiritual experience. I also had an incredible sense of achievement and gratitude for the gift of life. Somewhere in Galicia I remember distinctly hearing the words: joy, inspiration, truth, peace and love. Although I think of my beautiful mother every single day, I have accepted her death. Without a shadow of doubt I know for sure I will walk again. Advice from lonely planet walker Ruth Crossgrove says: “Prepare for the unpreparable-for”. You will cry and scream and shout and hate people, things and trees. You will rail against the world,

yourself, your shoes and your pack. You’ll be jealous, petty, hungry, thirsty, furious, ecstatic, joyful, silly, sick, stupid, inane and perfect. You’ll essentially be given a crash course in what it means to be human. Enjoy the hell out of it.

“If you are interested in doing a pilgrimage, remember that every path is personal. Make it your own. Remember to keep moving; nurture yourself and be present to the cycle of life.”

History & Legend According to legend, the body of saint James, one of the 12 Apostles and rumoured brother of Jesus Christ was found in a boat that washed ashore in Northern Spain thousands of years ago. His remains were buried under what is now the grand Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Millions from all over Europe walked thousands of miles to visit his grave. Unesco declared this site as a Universal Patrimony of Humanity and World Heritage Site.

combat inflammatory responses. The American Heart Association asserts that just 30 minutes a day of exercise like swimming can reduce heart disease in women by 30-40%. •

did you know? Water-based exercise has been proven to improve the use of joints affected by arthritis and to reduce osteoarthritis pain.

Swimming is an effective calorie burner, too. Depending on the intensity of your strokes, the average amount of calories burned for every 10 minutes of swimming is: breast stroke – 60; back stroke – 80; and butterfly – 150. Ward off diabetes with a burst of water energy each week – just losing a bit of fat and reducing your levels of bad cholesterol will help protect you from diabetes type II.

did you know? Swimming increases lung capacity and has been shown to be effective in improving asthma.

REASONS TO JUMP IN •

When you’re up to your neck in water, you only have to bear about 10% of your own body weight, so the feeling of lightness and freedom of movement is much greater than on land. It gives you the opportunity to move more freely, and also takes strain off your joints, giving your body stress-free exercise. Although water allows for wonderful buoyancy, it’s also much denser than air, so when you move through it, it offers greater resistance than say, jogging. That’s why swimming is great as part of a strength-training regimen. It’s also been proven to help with bone strength, particularly beneficial for post-menopausal women. With free movement, joint and ligament flexibility are enhanced, unlike the specifically targeted exercises you get from gym machines. Swimming strokes also give you the opportunity to stretch. The subtle, but very definite muscle toning is a fabulous benefit but it also tones an important inner muscle – your heart. Swimming helps your heart pump more efficiently, allowing blood flow through your body. Research has shown that aerobic exercise can

Research has also shown that swimming can quite simply make you happy. Although noted by sports journalist William Wilson as far back as 1883 by in his book ‘The Swimming Instructor’, science has confirmed that swimming releases feel-good brain chemicals. It also evokes a similar relaxation response to yoga from the stretching and deep breathing required. What’s more, research shows that swimming enhances the brains ability to replace brain cells lost from stress.

BEING TECHNO-FREE means you’ll have to make do with just your own thoughts for company when swimming. This is such a good thing – being able to switch off from technology for even 30 minutes a day will helps enormously with reducing stress levels. You also don’t need any special equipment to swim, all that’s needed is a body of water and swimming costume.

Each person carries with them the sum of the generations that came before them – an emotional inheritance

FAMILY CONSTELATION THERAPY Human behaviour is a complex and often confusing subject – how is it that two people brought up in the same family can turn out so differently? What motivates certain choices in life that lead to certain pathways? Everyone’s family has some sort of skeleton in the closet, or some underlying issue that’s either ignored or simply not mentioned – and even if it’s something that happened generations ago, it can still affect us today.

52

F

amily Constellation Therapy asserts that each person carries with them the sum of the generations that came before them – an emotional inheritance. Energy or emotions unresolved by previous generations can create problems or conditions for the next generations as they unconsciously attempt to solve or resolve the flow of energy and love through a family.

‘Children seldom or never dare to live a happier or more fulfilling life than their parents. Unconsciously they remain loyal to unspoken family traditions that work invisibly.’ – Bertold Ulsamer

did you know? According to renowned psychotherapist and father of Family Constellation Therapy, Bert Hellinger, many of the issues faced by people today have their roots, not merely in childhood as most psychologists assert, but in family history.

THE POWER OF THREE

The basic tenet of the therapy is to look back in time over three generations. Questions are asked, such as ‘who died early, or left’; who was abandoned, isolated or excluded from the family’; who was adopted or given up for adoption’; who had a stillborn birth or an abortion’; ‘who was murdered or murdered someone’; ‘who profited from another’s loss’; who was wrongly accused or jailed’; who has a physical, emotional or mental disability’; and so on. In asking these questions, a picture emerges and it’s possible to see how an event could have shaped a family. Hellinger says the imprint of these events can become the blueprint for future generations. Family Constellation Therapy exposes these issues and essentially breaks destructive family patterns.

These patterns are most often unconscious and the people living in the patterns are often not aware of the pattern. In fact, it’s often a current issue that will bring about an awareness of why – for example, one of Hellinger’s case studies tells of a woman aged 59 with two grown children who had attempted suicide twice and was on heavy antidepressants. Both suicide attempts had occurred about six months after moving into a new home. What the therapy uncovered was that when she was two, her 6-year old brother was killed by a drunk driver, six months after the family had moved to a new home. She had never made the connection before, but after therapy realised that the best way to honour her brother’s life was to live fully and do something good in his honour, rather than live depressed. Her depression lifted and she remained depression free.

THE PROCESS

While it is possible to engage in Family Constellation Therapy in a one-on-one session, practitioners prefer doing the work in a group. Members of the group are chosen to represent members or elements of the family – in this way, hidden and often unexpected dynamics are revealed. 1. In a group setting, one participant’s issue is explored and other members of the group are asked to stand in as a representative of a family member, or as a concept perhaps something that represents ‘depression’. The person being worked on will place them within a space that feels right and then sits quietly contemplating the visual picture. The representatives are not asked to act anything out, merely to stand where they have been placed. 2. What’s really interesting is that the representatives, who have no knowledge of who they are representing, often begin to experience emotions or even physical sensations that assist the process. This is a phenomenon named ‘the knowing field’ by psychiatrist Albrecht Mahr, or ‘morphic resonance’ as hypothesized by biologist Rupert Sheldrake. 3. Representatives are sometimes asked by the facilitator how they feel about where they have been placed in relation to others – this often brings about a good perception of the dynamic that www.wellnesswarehouse.com

uncovers the deeper influences of the original person’s presenting issue. It may sound a simple process, but it most often unveils traumas that continue to unconsciously affect the living, long after the people who were originally involved have passed away. 4. Once each representative feels right in their particular placement, other key family members who may have been forgotten or left out of family history are placed. Representatives very often are able to express feelings or insights deeply healing for the person in question. Once this is complete, the facilitator will suggest one or two healing sentences to be spoken aloud. If the representatives don’t feel peace after the sentence has been spoken, a new sentence is suggested, or they move place. This unveils possible solutions to the person seeking resolution. 5. Once agreement is reached, the person seeking resolution replaces his or her representative within the newly constructed system to see how it feels to be part of the reconfiguration.

RESULTS What you can expect from participating in family constellation therapy is insight and understanding of the real dynamics at play. You’ll discover loyalties, exclusions and elements that impact your current life. Entanglements and inappropriate loyalties (such as feeling loyal to an alcoholic grandfather who has been subsequently denigrated by the family) are resolved and the orders of love and belonging within the system are shifted into a strong and supportive place. Case studies have shown that people within your family who are represented during the session are also positively affected, even if they are unaware you are even going through a process. It’s been described as a quantum process as well – where the shifts in energy, simply through the work of the representatives, creates a dynamic and enduring shift in the very people involved.

BOOK

REVIEW

By Astrid Kille

Curl up with a great book over the holidays – use the inspiration to create dreams, to make your own soaps and scrubs, to appreciate the value of introversion and to cook wholesome food. The Cake The Buddha Ate: More Quiet Food by Daniel Jardim (Jacana)

Mouthwatering photos of food creations are irresistibly tempting. But that’s not all. Author Daniel Jardim is resident at the Ixopo Buddhist retreat where he has been teaching cookery workshops and advocating holistic living and eating for the past ten years. His book reflects the lifestyle at the retreat and has a collection of peaceful, productive and playful photographs interspersed with poems, anecdotes and short stories. This beautiful collection is more like a coffee table book with the added bonus of workable recipes. Expect to be delighted and inspired.

Stoep Zen by Anthony Osler (Jacana)

Anthony Osler has captured life in the karoo through the eyes of a Zen lens. Sensitive black and white images take you through the changing seasons and a refreshing look at life from Anthony’s view point on the stoep. Stories and conversations have a

common thread of Zen sensibility cruising through life as it is and touching on our vulnerability in being human. This delicate and poignant book is interspersed with a thread of humour and is punctuated by authenticity. Read this book to bring on heartwarming contemplation and appreciation for life in all its facets.

Soap Bubbles & Scrubs by Nicole Seabrook (Random Struik)

If you are home for the holidays and love keeping busy; if you savour gorgeous smells and aromatic oils; if you like making gifts for your friends and family and friends then Soaps, Bubbles & Scrubs is the perfect guide for you. What I loved about this book, besides the beautiful images, is that the recipes are easy to follow. They have in depth explanations on how to use them on your body and describe all their benefits. The first chapter talks about natural skin care, history of cosmetics, essential oils and carrier oils. Following chapters feature all kinds of potions and lotions for every skin type and occasion. It also has great recipes for babies and kids. Nicole Seabrook has been creating her own products since 2008, she has an aromatherapy salon in Cape Town, where she also offers basic aromatherapy, natural product and soap making workshops. everything you need to live life well

Quiet, The Power of Introverts in a world that can’t stop talking by Susan Cain (Barnes & Noble)

This New York Times bestseller is described as having started the Quiet Revolution. At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favour working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society. In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a recordbreaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, superbly researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

T

HINK ON THIS

Fashion magazines and movies play tricks on us, leading us to believe it’s entirely viable to walk around looking like a beauty queen day in and day out. Supermodel Cindy Crawford has been recorded saying, “Even I don’t wake up looking like Cindy Crawford!” In the media world beauty has come to rely on Photoshop.

SKIN DEEP A glowing complexion is a symbol of health and wellbeing. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and reflects much of what is going on inside – from physical to emotional ailments. Keep yours energised: FACIAL YOGA – numerous celebs swear by this type of yoga, saying its better than botox by far. Created by New York-based yoga teacher, Annelise Hagen, it’s the latest tool in combating wrinkles. Try the following exercises, daily: puff out your cheeks and transfer air from cheek to cheek until you’re out of breath – repeat three times; widen your eyes without wrinkling your forehead and focus on the horizon for 10 seconds – repeat four times. INVERSION – various modalities advocate inversion as a great way to increase blood flow to your head, allowing a flow of oxygenated blood to the brain, ears, eyes and face. This will improve the health and look of your skin and muscles by stimulating your lymphatic system. STEAM CLEAN – using crushed basil leaves (antibacterial) and fresh lemon juice in a large bowl of boiled water, hold your face about 30cm above the bowl and cover your head with a towel to trap the steam. This will give your skin a moisture boost and plump out wrinkles. EAT – include lots of fresh asparagus in your diet– it’s rich in rutin, a bioflavonoid that’s a powerful antioxidant. It will boost your skin condition and assist your body in using vitamin C more efficiently. Rutin also helps maintain collagen and is thought to boost circulation. DRINK – the following juice mix is a great skin booster, keeping your skin smooth, glowing and boosting collagen production: Juice 1 beetroot, 2 apples, ½ a cucumber and a handful of spinach leaves.

CHECK YOUR SILHOUETTE

did you know? Long term use of cortisone creams can cause skin thinning, broken blood vessels and stretch marks – for sensitive skins or eczema, use botanical creams that contain liquorice or feverfew.

TIP KEEP YOUR DIET RICH IN SULPHURCONTAINING FOOD, LIKE BROCCOLI, KALE, WATERCRESS, ROCKET, ONION, GARLIC AND EGGS. SULPHUR PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN KEEPING YOUR SKIN ELASTIC. HIGH LEVELS OF SUGAR TRIGGER HORMONES THAT ENCOURAGE THE RELEASE OF SEBUM, CREATING BLEMISHES, SO KEEP AWAY FROM SUGAR-LADEN FOOD AND DRINKS.

WALK TALL A slouch or bad posture will affect your whole disposition. Keeping your back straight, stomach in and shoulders squared is also an excellent way to keep core muscles in play – reducing the build up of unhealthy belly fat. One blogger insists that using duct tape to keep his back straight has made a huge difference to how people perceive him, and consequently his own levels of confidence. You may not want to take such drastic measures, but keep your posture in mind. Good posture is healthy both physically and psychologically. Those around you will perceive you as more confident and therefore more attractive.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

While inner beauty is a precursor to people seeing you as beautiful, fashion experts advise on paying attention to your silhouette. Begin with looking at your underwear. Avoid visible panty lines by wearing underwear that fits well and is not too tight – choose flat seam undies if you’re not keen on wearing a g-string.

MAKE YOUR BRA FIT When it comes to bras, an astounding number of women are wearing the wrong size. A good bra lifts your chest, giving you a smoother stomach and assists with good posture. There are two sizes to take into account regarding your bra – the band size measured in inches, and the cup size, measured alphabetically. These days, brand’s differ in size, so it’s best to always try bras on before buying them - to get your basic band size, measure all around your torso just below your breasts – if you’re using a cm tape measure, remember that 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

TIP IF YOUR BREASTS ARE SPILLING OVER THE TOP OF YOUR BRA, YOU NEED TO GO UP A CUP SIZE; IF THERE’S A GAP BETWEEN YOUR BREASTS AND THE CUP, GO DOWN A CUP SIZE.

The band of your bra should do most of the support work – you should be able to fit two fingers under the band, but not more. For underwire bras, ensure good side coverage – if the end of the wire is pointing toward the middle of your armpit, it’s correct. Get the base right and build from there – take time to identify what you love about yourself and work on highlighting those elements, rather than hiding away the aspects you don’t like. By accentuating your eyes, for example, you’ll detract attention from features you may not like. Practices like these are great confidence boosters.

Pick Me Up

Put yourself

Naartjie and Peppermint are used in this body balm with macadamia oil. Use as a ‘pick-me-up’ balm for when you’re feeling a little down. Massage into temples and other pulse points, back of neck and inner wrists and feel your ‘mojo’ come back.

Ban all negative thoughts about yourself this month. Instead, use a practice of affirmation to get to the stage where you not only accept yourself fully but you love yourself unconditionally. When negative thoughts play out in your mind, challenge each one with the gusto of a trial lawyer. We can’t stop our thoughts from coming but we can decide not to dwell on them and find a positive replacement. Building up self-esteem and confidence creates a more fabulous you.

The soul of a woman is a place of mystery and beauty.

Beauty & the beasts Finding and learning how to recognise true feminine beauty is something both men and women can benefit from. Craig Wilkinson offers his perspective on why women are often so challenged when it comes to selfacceptance and self-love.

62

thoughts & emotions

T

he feminine soul is one of the greatest treasures of the universe. Its beauty has no equal. Yet like all treasures of great value it has enemies. Two beasts in particular attack the heart of a woman’s beauty and femininity; the first is the lie popular media perpetrates about her beauty and the second is the wound to her feminine soul that the men in her life inflict on her, at times unknowingly, at times deliberately. The lie is that the only real beauty a woman has to offer is the way she looks and that only a few lucky women are gifted with beauty. In our highly eroticised world where the body of a woman is idolised and her mind and soul devalued, women grow up believing that the only beauty worth having is what they can present in a bikini or wrap in a skirt. With this lie as the premise of their understanding of beauty few women feel they have true beauty. How can they live up to the photo shopped images of perfection on daily display in multiple forms of media? And so they live with a secret sense of inadequacy, doing whatever they can to make themselves beautiful but inwardly sensing that they will never quite make the grade. The truth is, the beauty of a woman is far deeper than skin, and every women has a beauty to offer. The core of a woman’s beauty is her feminine soul. The way she looks is just one expression of this beauty. When all the attention is placed on a woman’s physical looks her inner beauty is devalued and will begin to shrink and hide, feeling it is of no consequence. A woman was never meant to be loved purely for external beauty, she was meant to be loved for all of who she is, and if the inner and outer get separated a great union is lost and the body and soul become strangers or even worse, enemies. The interplay between a woman’s inner and outer beauty should be a dance of love, the one an expression of the other. The most radiant a woman can be is when her heart and soul are loved and the full beauty of her feminine soul is expressed in her eyes and demeanour and the way she presents herself to the world. That is true beauty.

The second beast is the wound inflicted on a woman’s soul by men. Not all men are guilty of wounding and not all women have been wounded by a man, but enough have to name it as a major assault on the heart and soul of women. The most powerful man in a young girl’s life and therefore the one in a position to cause her the most harm is her father. From this incredibly privileged position a father needs to love, nurture, validate, affirm and protect his daughter, leaving her in no doubt that she is and has beauty of great value. He needs to demonstrate to her the value of femininity by his actions and attitudes to her mother and other women. Because of his importance in his daughter’s life a father merely has to fail to do these things to wound her feminine soul. Far greater wounding is inflicted if she is abused in any way, physically, sexually or verbally. For any man to abuse a woman is a despicable violation and for a father it is the vilest possible betrayal. When a young woman is assaulted by the beast of masculine abuse, either through passive neglect or active abuse, she grows up with a deep wound to her feminine soul. And this wound negatively affects the way she sees herself and lives her live. She may be blind to her own feminine beauty and live apart from it, sometimes assaulting it further by failing to nurture it or even actively sabotaging it. She may fail to value her femininity, seeing it only as a tool to be used for getting love. She may spend her life constantly feeling unlovely, striving to make herself attractive but seldom feeling she gets it right.

ECO DIVA NICOLE’S DIY RECIPE Summertime, and the party season is upon us. Freshen up your look with a deep moisturizing, vitamin A and C infused facemask. This recipe is packed with anti-oxidants and phytonutrients to feed and brighten your skin.

Carrot & Honey Face Brightening Mask Ingredients: • • • • • •

1 large carrot (preferably organic) ½ tbsp honey ½ tbsp olive oil ¼ lemon 5 drops lavender essential oil 5 drops sandalwood essential oil

Directions: 1.

2. 3.

4. 5. 6.

Peel & steam carrots. Peel one large carrot and steam or boil until tender and soft enough to mash. Mash it with a fork until it has a creamy consistency. Mix in honey and extra virgin olive oil. If your skin is oily, you can leave out the olive oil. Add a few drops of lemon juice. Lemon juice is a natural astringent, so the oilier your skin, the more lemon you want in your mask. If you have dry skin, add about 8 drops of lemon and if you have oily skin, add up to 1 tablespoon. Add the essential oils and keep mixing until you have a smooth paste. Cool down. Make sure the mixture has cooled before you apply on your skin. Mask time. Apply the carrot mask onto a clean face and neck. Leave it on for 10 -15 minutes and wash it off with warm water. Pat dry and follow up with your favourite moisturizer or eye cream.

When a woman doesn’t believe she has beauty she loses touch with it, failing to nurture it and unwittingly allowing it to shut down. When a woman believes her looks are all she has to gain a man’s affection she detaches her physical beauty from her inner beauty and some of the essence of her soul is forced into hiding, feeling lonely and unvalued even while attention is lavished on her. Many a woman retreats into a life of functional service; hiding her feminine soul in a shell of competence, allowing society’s written roles for women to bury her feminine essence under a pile of duties and chores. She becomes a mother, employee, wife, boss; doing the things her role dictates but ignoring the passionate cries of her feminine soul. She forfeits her beauty for duty. Any true man will do everything he can to rescue and protect women from the assault of the twin beasts. Sadly many men are caught up in battles of their own and unwittingly confirm the lies and deepen the wound. Men are often unconsciously scared of the heart and soul of a woman. It is far easier to focus on her looks which can be assessed and criticized, touched and made love to. But the soul of a woman is an altogether different proposition. It is a place of mystery and beauty and it takes a courageous man to enter in. Its depth and intuition is a place where the fears and insecurities of a man can easily be uncovered. And so men avoid venturing into the soul of a woman for fear of what might be exposed in them, not realising that the unwrapping of their masculine soul in the nurturing depths of the female soul is a far greater gift than mere physical intimacy can offer. It is so much easier to

strip off our clothes and leap into bed with a women’s body than strip off our fears, pride and need to control and leap naked into the beauty of a woman’s soul. In spite of the best efforts of the beasts, Eve still stands. And more than stands, she shines. She continues to love, and give, and nurture and heal; she inspires and creates and gives to our world a beauty and magic that we could not survive without. How much more could she be if men who have been the beasts become the protectors and defenders they were made to be.

Every woman is beautiful. Sadly not every woman knows that she is. As men we need to wage war against the lies that keep women blinded to their beauty and we need to lay our lives on the line to stop the abuse of the magnificent gift the feminine soul is to the world. We have the power. We have the choice. Only when we stand up and become real men and real dads will our daughters, our wives, our sisters, our mothers, our lovers, our friends, our companions, our colleagues, be free to be all they were made to be. Beautiful. And free. Craig Wilkinson is the Author of “DAD – The Power and Beauty of Authentic Fatherhood” and founder of Father A Nation (FAN) an NPO that works with men and fathers. Let your hair down & fly By Glenn-Douglas Haig

This summer, give yourself permission to acknowledge how far you have come and celebrate what you have achieved. If you consider how fragile life is and how easily we humans pop our clogs, it’s a miracle we are even still here. Ten years ago, I was shot seven times by armed robbers in my home, and on the way to the hospital I left my body and floated up above the frantic paramedics leaning over my face, trying in vain to resuscitate me. They had zapped my chest twice with electricity, forced pure oxygen into my lungs and slapped, pumped and squeezed every inch of me to keep me alive… but I was in a state of bliss watching as they unplugged the equipment, removed the oxygen mask and buttoned up my shirt. It was my chance to go home. I felt so peaceful compared to the trauma I had just been through, that I turned my attention away from the scene and focused on the stars as a tunnel of light encircled me. After what felt like ages, I came before a benevolent light and felt the deepest love. This was it! I could stay here and feel this peace forever… but as the light around me grew clearer, I became aware that I had a choice to return to earth or to stay in the light. I looked back and felt all the potential of my unlived life and knew I would return.

can be seen at www.fatheranation.co.za; and www.thedadbook.co.za.

I suddenly gasped for breath as I came to in the emergency entrance and then slipped into a coma. When I surfaced a few days later in ICU, I took one look at my parents and knew I had made the right choice. Every year I celebrate the day of my shooting, and my decision to come back to earth. I have learned this much: You don’t have to almost die to have an excuse to celebrate your life… find any reason to forget work, leave the stress and have a party with the people you love. It’ll probably prolong your life!

WHERE PAIN ENDS &

LIFE BEGINS

Manual Cell Stimulation (MCS) is a groundbreaking technique developed over the past 14 years and practiced only at the Nerve and Pain Release Centre. It is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment that removes pain, lameness, twitching and osteoarthritis. MCS works on a cellular level, in conjunction with nerve, muscle and bone memory.

“I am living a pain-free and full life with no sign of my previous injuries or defects of any kind. The treatment is truly a life investment that I will never regret. Lene Burden

Gentle, tactile stimulation gives permanent relief once the course of treatment has been completed. Confirmed by X-rays. Course lengths differ from person to person.
