BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY

T

his month has been filled with blankets and babies. We are thrilled to welcome our second child into the world - Zak is very excited he now has a sibling. We have two other recent babies in our marketing department so we feel blessed all round. In the office, we’ve been running a blanket drive to keep Cape Town warm, we managed to collect a substantial amount of blankets and we’re proud of our team for participating so wholeheartedly.

Our July issue focuses on immunity - the immune system is such an important part of health we wanted to dedicate the theme of this issue to the many ways we can strengthen and improve it. A healthy immunity includes resilience in all areas - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and we’ve included interesting articles on the many lifestyle aspects that keep us well balanced, strong and free from disease and ailments. Fermented foods come to the fore with a focus on their healing qualities, the trusty old sweet potato is given a make-over and we’re still loving our juices. We look at the adrenal system, skin allergies, the wonders of a long hot bath and things you can do for a happy home. Movement sees us strengthening our yoga practice and our family section deals with teenage tantrums. This is a highly informative issue with an abundance of well researched, interesting and inspiring features. I wish you a warm month with great health and lots of energy.

EDITOR’S CHOICE

HIGH IMMUNITY I’m not trying to tempt fate or anything, but I never, ever get sick. That’s partly because I inherited a strong immune system and partly because I believe in preventative medicine. Every winter I get a bottle of Echinacea drops and take it daily until it’s finished. I often add a few drops of tea tree to my bath, I have Sutherlandia in my kitchen and take it periodically. Then if I’m on a deadline or things are a little stressed Ginseng is my go-to. So far it’s working perfectly. Another tip, if you want to keep immunity at a high, leave chemicals out and use natural household and body products.

Super Sutherlandia

Home Keeper

Sutherlandia is nature’s super weapon for boosting immunity and treating a host of conditions. It’s one of the worlds most appreciated adaptogenics and is anti-viral, bacterial and fungal. Dr Boxalls Sutherlandia Tincture R109,99

Tea tree oil is one of the most useful medicinal substances you can have in your home. If you have any kind of infection or skin issue or need an antiseptic of any kind, Tea Tree will sort you out. It also has antiseptic and antibiotic properties that help with skin infections, rashes, burns and much more. Thursday Plantation Tea Tree 10ml R99,99

Clean Power Perfect Prevention

Everyone should take Echinacea to prevent colds and flu. Regard it as a staple and have some at every change of season to guard against getting ill. It’s one of the most well known herbs for stimulating the immune system. Wellness Echinacea Tincture R59,99

Vigorous Vitality

Most people don’t realize how many chemicals they have in their homes from the cleaning products they use. Chemical toxicity is linked to ailments and diseases like allergies, headaches, depression, dizziness, Alzheimer, cancer, chronic fatigue and more. There are alternatives that are just as effective in terms of cleaning. Triple Orange is my favourite. It has a multitude of uses and is natural with no nasties. Triple Orange Wonder Spray R44,99

There are so many benefits attributed to Ginseng, it boosts low energy and fatigue, improves vitality, restores normal sleep patterns, improves heart function. It’s a support after chemotherapy, radiotherapy and recovery from drug addiction as well as being useful for weight management. It has a detoxifying antiinflammatory action and excellent for immunity. Flora Force Siberian Ginseng R97,99

88

Better For You

SAVE R10 NOW R2999 1-31 July 2015

Naturalmente is a fabulous chemical-free solution for hair. They use sustainably harvested, bio-dynamic and organic ingredients free from petrochemical by-products and synthetic substances. This is really an opportunity to make a conscious choice towards a sustainable way of living and use the best ethical option for your wellbeing. Naturalmente Hair Shampoo or Conditioner R240

Sesame solution

Sesame is a healing oil you can use all over your body. It absorbs into your skin really well but it’s a good idea to let it soak in before you have to put clothes on. It’s antibacterial and resists all kinds of skin pathogens and things like athletes foot. It’s antiviral and antiinflammatory and a good antioxidant that neutralises oxygen radicals beneath the skin. Soil Sesame Seed Oil R69,99

OCULUS

an evolution in eyewear Meet the man behind the brand

M

ost people put off getting their eyes tested. It’s quite a scary thing when your world gets a little blurry, or that road sign you used to be able to read just doesn’t look the same. It’s something you don’t really want to acknowledge – that you might just need glasses! But, testing your eyes regularly is an important part of healthcare and need not be intimidating, especially with the huge advances in technology and even more especially when there’s a facility like Oculus to do it for you. I met with Optometrist Pieter Steyn, who gave me a whole different perspective on eye care. Walking into the beautifully designed store in the Mirage building in Cape Town’s Cape Quarter is a delightful experience. Rows of the most gorgeous specs are neatly displayed at eye level throughout his shop. There’s not a single personality that won’t find a match in his extensive

12

range. Rather than the usual dreary options, there are styles and colours with endless and exciting possibilities. Getting a pair of glasses suddenly seemed like a hugely exciting idea rather than a disappointing admission. Oculus has a culture mired in passion. The staff are equally as passionate as Pieter and always ready to offer constructive comments about colour, design and suitability. Undisputedly, Oculus is the most trendy eyewear outlet you’ll ever come across. All his life, well, since the age of 7, Pieter has had to wear glasses – and a strong prescription at that. “It was always pretty depressing looking at the standard options available,” says Pieter. Particularly so when he was brought up with a strong aesthetic sensibility – his Mom is a fashion designer. Pieter put his heart and mind into mastering everything to do with correcting eye sight and making the journey into eye care a wonderful experience. helping you live life well

After graduating he did a post grad in Advanced Ocular Diagnostics and spent time working in the field. A series of locums in branches across the country gave him invaluable experience about the market. With a need to provide the ultimate in testing excellence Pieter invested in the highest level of advanced technology available.

TOP LEVEL TESTING

FRAMES

PROACTIVE EYE CARE

Oculus uses an innovative OPD Wavefront system. It’s a remarkable instrument using digital technology that evaluates individual vision needs. More than a refractive examination, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the entire visual system and optical pathway. Basically, it helps choose the best lens for the best visual outcome. The Oculus vision is to give their clients vision that’s as close to perfect as possible and the OPD Wavefront system helps achieve this.

“Why do glasses have to be a grudge purchase”, says Pieter. They are the most important accessory you can ever have. They’re highly visible and the first thing people are likely to notice about you. They can define you, uplift you, and make you feel fabulous.”

There are many ways you can safeguard your eyes and boost your vision. Eye health is very important; everyone should have their eyes checked every two years.

“Besides that, When you look your worst you can just throw on a pair of glasses, no make-up required.”

OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY People often experience changes in their vision when they reach their 40’s. To look out for the early signs of eye conditions, in case there’s a more serious problem, the Oculus uses an Optical Coherence Tomography device.

HOW DOES THIS EXAMINATION WORK? The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is one of the few devices that reveals in-depth images of the eye’s internal structures. The examination only takes a few seconds. Nothing touches your eye as you look into the machine and there are no puffs of air or flashes of bright light.

Up to 80% of vision impairment and blindness can be prevented by early detection. WHAT THE TEST LOOKS FOR An OCT examination can aid in the detection and monitoring of serious eye diseases. As we grow older our retinas may change in ways not always visible on the surface, and without physical symptoms. Because the very early signs of disease may show up in this examination, it’s important to book an appointment if you are worried about any of the symptoms below: •

Trouble reading or concentrating on any activity that requires fine vision

Straight lines appear wavy or bent

Faces are hard to see

You see dark or empty patches in the centre of your vision.

Anne e Valentine is Pieters’ favourite brand. “They’re made in France and are so progressive, they’re at the edge of what happens in eye wear, and suit just about anyone.” He is also very impressed with frames from Japan which he believes are in a class of their own. At Oculus you can expect to see top brands like Anne e Valentine, Eyevan, Hoet Couture, Isson, L A Eyeworks, L.G.R, Lucas De Stael, Mykita, Persol, Rolf, Rvs, Theo, Matsuda, Barton Perreira, Suzy Glam and even a bespoke and couture framing option for your very own design produced in-house at Oculus on the Horizon. Choosing frames at Oculus is such a rewarding experience. None of them are behind locked cases and you feel comfortable spending as much time as you want trying on as many pairs as you feel like. “There’s nothing like seeing my customers’ excitement when they find the perfect pair to match them. People end up loving their glasses so much, they don’t want to be seen without them.” It’s just how it is these days, we have a visual tax to pay because we spend so much time behind computers. Pieter’s top tip for choosing the right pair is to come and choose on your own. That way no one can confuse you about what it is you really want. Embrace the fact that you have to wear glasses and have fun with it. Use it to enhance your image.

wellnesswarehouse.com

did you know? Blue light from digital devices degrades our visual receptors, causing eye strain. It also blocks out the production of melatonin, which may be the reason many people don’t sleep properly. You can remedy this by getting glasses with a blue control or blue block.

4 eye care tips 1. Eat to keep your eyes healthy – green leafy vegetables, red and yellow peppers and egg yolk are foods that will benefit the eyes. 2. If using screens frequently, including computers, phones and ipads make sure you wear glasses that block the blue light from screens. 3. If your eyes start to go, get proper prescription glasses rather than using readers which can be harmful to your eyes. 4. Do daily eye exercises – look up, down, horizontally, do eye circles and do a few rounds of alternate focusing on near and far objects.

In a heart beat Groote Schuur Hospital is proud to take part in a global clinical trial involving the world’s smallest, minimally invasive cardiac pacemaker. It’s called the Medtronic Micra™ Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS). It’s a tenth of the size of a conventional pacemaker - about the size of a large vitamin. Not needing any wires or ‘leads’ to connect to the heart it attaches via small tines and delivers electrical impulses that pace the heart through an electrode in the device. The Micra TPS implant doesn’t require a surgical incision in the chest but is delivered directly into the heart through a catheter in in the femoral vein. “This miniaturized technology is designed to provide patients with the advanced pacing technology of traditional pacemakers via a minimally invasive approach,” said Dr. Ashley Chin, Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Groote Schuur Hospital and University of Cape Town, who implanted the first Micra transcatheter pacemaker in the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, and Turkey. “If positive, the results of the trial could potentially benefit more than one million people globally who receive pacemakers each year.”

Sitting Pretty

New legislation requires that all children under the age of three travelling in a vehicle must be strapped into a car seat with a belt. This also applies to travel in taxis and busses. Out of the estimated 40 people that die on South African roads daily, 4 of these are children. For safety’s sake Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, has introduced this new car chair regulation to South Africa’s National Road Traffic Act. Anyone who doesn’t comply can expect a heavy fine.

Happy Monday In a bid to combat Monday blues, Liane McGowan has launched the Happy Monday campaign. According to Liane McGowan, founder of employee wellness company Happy Monday “The culture of unhappiness is unhealthy, unproductive and, quite often, totally reversible. The two biggest factors that contribute to happiness around the world are a sense of community and frequent celebrations. In the working environment, happiness can be created through consistent forms of change, utilising formalised training sessions and including casual engagements. When we allow employees to laugh, learn, move and communicate, they become energised, rendering them more creative and enabling them to function more productively. Happiness is a science and can be promoted and developed with the correct approach.” Happy employees are 180 percent more energised, 108 percent more engaged, 50 percent more motivated and 40 percent more confident than unhappy employees. did you know? While most of our regular fruits and vegetables have traces of pesticides and chemicals, your potential exposure to toxins is lower with sweet potatoes than with other conventionally grown produce. It’s still a good idea though to look for organic whenever you can.

DATE & SWEET POTATO BROWNIES

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C 2. Peel the potatoes, dice them and steam for about 20 minutes. 3. When they’re really soft put them in a blender with the dates and process into a smooth mixture. 4. Mix all the rest of the ingredients together in a medium sized bowl. Then add the sweet potato and carry on mixing until everything is evenly combined. 5. Grease a baking dish with coconut oil or line it with wax paper. Spoon your mixture in, spread it out evenly and cook for about 25 minutes. 6. Once your brownies have cooked through, leave them to cool for at least ten minutes before you remove them. The cooling process keeps the brownies from crumbling.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

By Roxanne Haywood

There are some things in life you just cannot live without... air to breath, water for hydration and of course, chocolate chip cookies. To avoid ‘post-cookie-guilt’ we’ve created a cookie to bring you everything you’ve ever wanted, and more.

A

‘naughty’ favourite, turns into a ‘nice’ guilt-free alternative with our grain-free, sugar-free, wheat-free, gluten-free, happiness-full chocolate chip cookie.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE BANTING-FRIENDLY GRAIN-FREE SUGAR-FREE WHEAT-FREE GLUTEN-FREE Makes about 15 cookies

did you know? Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Wakefield in 1938 and were originally called Toll House Cookies.

20

INGREDIENTS 2 CUPS DE-SHELLED SUNFLOWER SEEDS OR ALMOND FLOUR 1/2 TSP BAKING SODA 1/2 TSP PINK HIMALAYAN SALT 1/4 CUP GRASS-FED BUTTER (ROOM TEMPERATURE) 1/3 CUP XYLITOL 1 FREE-RANGE ORGANIC EGG (ROOM TEMPERATURE) 1 TBSP VANILLA EXTRACT 1/2 CUP OR 125G DARK BANTING FRIENDLY CHOCOLATE (USE A SUGAR FREE OPTION OR THE 80% LINDT VERSION AS AN EXTRA TREAT) 1/2 CUP OR 125G CHOPPED MACADAMIA NUTS

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper. 2. Place the sunflower seeds in a food processor and process into a flour-like consistency. This recipe also works perfectly if you use almond flour or another nut flour. 3. Using a handheld electric beater, combine the butter and xylitol. Add the egg and vanilla extract and continue mixing. helping you live life well

4. Add in your sunflower seed flour, baking soda, salt and continue mixing until well combined. 5. Break the chocolate slab into small chips and mix into the cookie dough along with the chopped macadamia nuts. 6. Scoop the dough into cookie size balls. Place them evenly on your prepared baking tray and flatten out to your preferred thickness. The dough won’t spread or flatten when baking. 7. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown. They are absolutely delicious served straight from the oven but will keep up to a week in an airtight container. Most recipes can convert to ‘guiltfree’ versions by swapping out a few ingredients. Try this with some of your favourites: • Substitute normal processed wheat flour with grain-free flours (you may need to adjust the liquid measurements) • Swap sugar for xylitol This recipe was supplied by The Banting Blondes www.thebantingblondes.com

The biological reality – that bacteria are our ancestors and the context for all life; that they perform many important physiological functions for us; and that they improve, preserve, and protect our food – contrasts sharply with the widespread perception of bacteria as our enemies. Sandor Katz, The Art of Fermentation

MIGHTY MICROBES

It’s a little strange to say fermented food is the latest greatest new discovery in food health because actually, before canning and refrigeration we used to eat it all the time as a standard pantry item. Perhaps we didn’t really realize the full extent of how amazingly beneficial these foods are. To delve deeper into fermented food I met with Bogden and Karin Rose, avid researchers, farmers, and pioneers of the movement back to clean food with high integrity. After an afternoon with them, I couldn’t help wondering whether fermented food really is the answer to boundless energy and optimal health.

T

his extraordinary couple have 10 children, all of whom are home schooled, they live on a farm in the Western Cape, home grow the majority of ingredients they use in their recipes and still have time to drive into town for a meeting that left me energized and inspired. Their journey started when, after a period of ill health, they turned to diet as a healing intervention. They stopped dairy and meat and started eating organic wholefoods. Even so, they didn’t feel as substantial an improvement as they wanted and couldn’t work out why they didn’t have more energy.

did you know? During fermentation food is exposed to bacteria and yeasts, either through a culture or naturally through the air. Fermentation predigests foods and makes nutrients more bioavailable. It also produces beneficial microorganisms that help with digestion, strengthen the immune system and guard against bacteria and infection.

22

They started experimenting and found the mineral content of the vegetables available to us alarmingly low. There aren’t a lot of truly healthy options available on shelf, especially if your system is sensitive. Most food has added chemicals, preservatives, sugar or other worrying factors like GM contamination. They decided the only way they could trust the food they consume is to grow it themselves. Properly cultivated soil with high mineral content is absolutely key to creating nourishing food. “Take a handful of soil from our garden”, says Bogden, and it’s so healthy, it’s full of worms and good bacteria.” After eating vegetables grown in high quality soil without growth accelerators or chemicals they had a completely different energy level and experience of health.

charge. Alkaline minerals have a greater capacity to absorb electrons. When our pH is off we compromise this capacity.” Fermented food enhances the absorption and adds more minerals. Microbes make your food easier to digest, and we end up eating less because the bio-availability is greater. Our bodies register all the good nutrients and stop sending hunger signals. Bacteria, specifically L-plantarum, present on the vegetables starts off the fermentation process, then airborne bacteria adds to the result. Chemically treated, or fertilized crops have less L-plantarum which affects the quality of the end products. This is another reason the Rose family grows as much of their own product as they can. If they run short, they source the very best organic produce or the highest quality biofriendly alternatives.

“The level of fatigue and amount of ailments that most people experience is unnecessary says Karin, whom I can’t help being in awe of. She’s a woman that gave birth to her last child on an exercise mat in front of the fire at home, then handed him to his father and promptly got up to go and make tea.

That morning Bogden had raw kimchi soup with spinach, broccoli and cashews, two dill cucumbers and some dehydrated seed crackers. By 4pm he was still full of energy and going strong. Some say food like sauerkraut is an acquired taste or at least something you have to get used to while others find fermented food absolutely delicious. Regardless of taste, it’s all about the bacteria.

“Basically”, explains Bogden, “we are electrical, our bodies are like capacitors, with the capacity to absorb and hold

We seem to have embraced a ‘war on bacteria’ when most bacteria protect us from the few that can make us sick.

Continuous indiscriminate killing of bacteria in, on and around our bodies makes us more vulnerable to infection rather than less vulnerable.

About 70% of our immune system is in the gut. More than what we eat, it is how we digest that counts. If the immune system is compromised in any way, our supply of beneficial bacteria can dwindle and leave the body vulnerable to infection, viruses and toxins. FERMENTED FOODS Probiotic foods like kimchi, tempeh, miso, kombucha and sauerkraut are filled with good bacteria that activate the nutrients your body needs, nourishing it with healthy, beneficial organisms. Besides the health benefits, fermented food creates interesting flavours, textures, and smells without the use of chemicals, preservatives or harmful ingredients. These are just some of the more common fermented foods eaten for their health benefits. Kombucha is a beverage that originates in Asia. It’s made from a blend of yeasts, bacteria and sweetened tea which leaves a lightly carbonated result. Kvas is popular in Russia and made from fermented rye. It is carbonated with a negligible alcohol content and sometimes flavoured with fruit. Rejuvelac is known as a health tonic. This naturally carbonated drink full of enzymes is somewhat sour and is made from soaking wheat berries in spring water. Miso is made when you mix rice, barley or soybeans with a certain mould and age it in a wooden cask. It’s a paste commonly used in Japan to flavour many different dishes.

Sauerkraut needs cabbage and salt, fermented over about 3 to 4 weeks. Fermentation by lactobacilli is introduced naturally and biologically, as the air-borne bacteria culture on raw cabbage leaves. Yoghurt is made when a culture or souring bacteria is added to milk from a cow or goat.

GET THE BENEFITS Fermented foods boost immunity and can change your health in a dramatic way. For maximum benefit, eat a small amount frequently. That means have a tablespoon or two with one or two of your meals daily. If you prefer a beverage like kefir or kombucha, a few sips or half a cup is enough to benefit you. It helps balance stomach acid, increases digestion, and protects against pathogens. ACID BALANCE As we get older, we produce fewer digestive juices and enzymes. Food like sauerkraut, yoghurt and pickled vegetables can compensate for this. When hydrochloric acid in the stomach is low, fermented food helps increase gastric juice acidity. When there’s too much acid, it helps protect the stomach and intestinal lining. EASY DIGESTION Organic compounds are metabolised into more elemental forms, minerals become more bio-available and difficult to digest compounds are broken down. Carbohydrates in fermented food are broken down and pre-digested. This is particularly good for people with diabetes.

BRAND NEW IN STORE We are so excited to have a brand new range of fermented food in the Wellness Warehouse store at Kloof street, especially when we know exactly where it comes from. The Rose range of food has been prepared at the Rose family farm farm near Greyton.

Tempeh comes from Indonesia and is a type of soy bean cake that’s been fermented with Rhizopus mould.

CHIA SEEDS Chia seeds have a mild, pleasant taste and can be used as an energy, fibre and omega-3 fatty acid supplement. They are ideal for adding to smoothies.

CHIA SMOOTHIE 1 cup low-fat milk 1 cup low-fat frozen yoghurt 1 tsp HCW Cinnamon Powder / HCW Cocoa Powder, organic / 1 tbsp frozen berries 4 tsp HCW Chia Seeds Mix all ingredients together well in a blender. Serves 2

Kimchi is made by mixing fresh vegetables with salt then packing them in an airtight container, the bacteria naturally present on the veggies creates a type of vinegar that creates a healthy bacterial environment. wellnesswarehouse.com

Repurpose your juicer pulp into nutrient rich compost, or add it to an omelet or veg pattie.

JUICE LIKE A PRO

We all know we’re supposed to eat our veggies. It can be difficult though, to fit in seven servings of fruit and veg a day (the number recommended by many experts). That’s where juicers and blenders come in. They help squeeze more fruit and veg into a smaller portion so you can get more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants into your diet. Pick the right recipe, pick the right machine, and get juicing. You’ll be a pro in no time.

W

ellness Warehouse’s very own Masrur Leeman explains everything you need to know to juice like a pro.

nutritious juice. Heat can kill sensitive fruit and vegetables and the cold-pressed juice produced by more powerful juicers is more nutritious.

What’s the difference between juicing and blending?

What should I look out for in a juicer?

When juicing, the machine extracts the juice (this is the water and most of the nutrients your fruit and veggies contain), leaving behind the pulp. Blenders pulverise the whole fruit/vegetable, making a smoothie. The benefit of this is that smoothies contain fibre. What are the best ingredients for juicing? This depends on your taste and why you’re juicing. Good ingredients are apples, pineapples, lemons, kale, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, blue berries, mint and wheatgrass. All of these are high in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. What are the best ingredients for blending? Again, this varies from person to person. Good ingredients are kale, coconut, pineapple, strawberries, bananas, raw cacao, natural peanut butter, cinnamon, yogurts, mint and garlic. Unflavored protein powders and superfood shake mixes are great for extra nutrients. Why are some juicers more expensive than others?

Look for a more powerful motor that works slowly (low ‘revolutions per minute’). This will result in more nutrients extracted and the more powerful motor means you’ll be able to juice heavier loads. Make sure the motor has a good warranty, too. What is the difference between a blender and a hand blender? Stick blenders are handheld. They’re very convenient because you can use them directly in a pan or the pot you are working with. They’re great for blending soups, sauces, and mixing up batters. What should I look out for in a blender?

This should be a winter staple. Carrots are full of antioxidant vitamin A, oranges are full of vitamin C and ginger has long been used to help the body fight off colds and flu. VEGETARIAN Serves 1

INGREDIENTS 6 MEDIUM OR 4 LARGE CARROTS, RINSED 2 ORANGES, HALVED AND JUICED A 2CM CUBE OF GINGER (leave the skin on)

Add all ingredients together. Drink right away.

You want one with a strong motor power. Ideally, check it has at least 500watts. Make sure it has a BPA-free jug. See that the blades are durable, too. Nutribullet is a good example. What’s your favorite super food to add to smoothies and juices? My favorite is the Superfood shake by the Superfoods brand. It’s packed with a synergistic blend of lucuma, mesquite, raw cacao, hemp seed and maca. I use it before and after workouts, and even in my oats.

More expensive juicers have stronger motors and help you extract more

SPICE IT UP There’s no doubt curry is delicious. But did you know that it can be good for you, too? Many of the spices in curry, including turmeric, chilli and cumin have health benefits.

Turmeric

Chilli

Cumin

Turmeric, the spice that gives curry its signature yellow colour, is a potent source of antioxidants. Turmeric exract is so powerful it’s sold in capsule form. The active compound called curcumin is believed to be an excellent anti-inflammatory.

Capsaicin, found in chillies, is used in supplement form to help with weight loss. The heat caused by chillies is the body warming up in something called ‘dietbased thermogenesis’. Put very simply, this is when the energy in food is converted into heat, using up calories.

Cumin has long been used as a traditional remedy for indigestion. Thymol, one of the clever compounds in cumin, stimulates the glands that secrete acids and enzymes that help your body break down food.

Make Effective Decisions and

Take Action

by Dr Mark Vella

Reviewing our lives and the decisions we make is something we need to pay attention to. Very often we make decisions without really thinking too hard. Of course, decisions lead to choices and then actions, or non-actions. Both of these create specific results – they lead to better health, wealth and happiness or towards disease and stress. Success comes from good decisions and positive action. Real power exists in the present moment where decisions are made and actions taken.

H

ere’s an effective way to bolster your decision making and encourage good results.

Audit Your Current Decision Making Look at the Life Wheel below. Rate each area between 1 and 10 (using 10 as the best it can get), based on how happy you are with the results you are getting in that area of your life. Colour each segment in, up to the level of your rating. This makes it pretty clear which areas you are doing well in and those you aren’t. Then ask yourself two questions. 1. What role do you play in scores that are below your expectations? 2. What decisions and actions are you taking that drive that score? It makes sense if you want better results, you need to improve the quality of decisions and actions that lead to those results.

Your Life Wheel

When You Decide But Don’t Act A decision made without any resultant action means you will be out of integrity with yourself, and probably with others. Because we are far more driven by our subconscious minds than our conscious minds if we get stuck it’s useful to take a look in the shadows of the subconscious and see what might be causing us to sabotage our decisions. Go through this process to get more clarity. Name the decision and the choice you took. Think about the choice that might have had a better result. What subconscious motive drove you to make that choice instead? What belief is behind the choice you made instead? What feelings are you ignoring?

5. Focus on priorities. If overloaded with too many choices, decisions and actions, you’ll run out of steam and fall short. And it will show in your below par results. We all start with the same potential for health, wealth and happiness despite circumstances. It’s simply our decisions and actions that make the difference in determining the result.

STRETCH YOURSELF To change the results you are getting, you need to change the quality of your decisions and actions. Change nothing, nothing will change. 1. Firstly, understand that your decisions are pivotal in the way you manage yourself. You are free to choose and are responsible for those choices. Exercise that choice proactively and with responsibility. 2. Focus your decisions and actions on areas of influence. If you have no authority in an area, your decisions and actions will be wasted. 3. Make sure you can define the problem you are trying to overcome. If you can’t define it, how can you take effective action?

26

4. Get clear on the end vision and goal, i.e. the practical result you want. Without this, you won’t know what the right decisions and actions are.

Alternative Boost By Zoey Lapinsky

We take a tour of 44 interventions and therapies to help boost the immune system. This includes an A-Z of techniques, potions, brews, bodywork and mind power.

Acupuncture: This uses needles insterted in the body along specific meridian lines to balance the body’s energy or qi. It finds vulnerable areas in the body and strengthens them, providing a strong bodymind to fend off illness. If you’re afraid of needles, try acupressure. Almonds: These help the body recover from stress – because they’re loaded with vitamin B.

Elderberry: fights infection and lowers inflammation.

Elderberry Flower

Bed rest: Get plenty of sleep. When we’re run down and tired, our bodies become susceptible to increased stress and illness. Optimal rest allows your body and mind to function at their best.

Fragrances and essential oils: Oils like peppermint, eucalyptus and lavender have healing properties. Steam or inhale them in a bowl of hot water, or add them to a hot Epsom salt bath.

Broccoli: An effective immune booster that stimulates the immune system and helps protect the body from damage.

Fasting: Fasting helps purify and detoxify the body. Waste materials are eliminated and because the body is not focusing on digestion, it has plenty of time for cellular repair and rejuvenation.

Bach flower remedies: Floral remedies aimed at balancing out and bringing harmony to our emotional imbalances. Blueberries: rich in antioxidant properties and vital when it comes to immune boosting fruit.

Blueberries Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT): When the body holds onto strain, our energy and communication networks get blocked. Allow the energy and information to flow, and the body is able to use its own healing abilities to return to wellness. Dowsing: A pendulum made of crystal, wood or stone is used to diagnose and treat physical, mental and emotional ailments.

28

Echinacea: A herbal remedy for colds, flu and general immune functioning. It can be taken as a preventative measure or to help recover faster.

Garlic: A power house immune booster that also adds flavour to dishes. Gigartina: A little known gem unparalleled at fighting off viral infections, without the usual side effects of medication. Grapefruit: Packed with immune boosting flavenoids. Hot toddy: Make a cup of hot herbal (caffeine free) tea, add lemon, honey and a small shot of bourbon or whiskey. Homeopathy: Working on the principle that like cures like, homeopathy has tinctures, pills and capsules that help boost immunity. General homeopathic remedies can help treat basic symptoms of cold and flu in an acute illness, and specific prescription remedies for intense and longstanding helping you live life well

illness. Preventative strategies include Oscillocccinum or Influenzinum and Oil of Oregano. Humidifier: Steam helps relieve nasal congestion and a blocked stuffy nose. Holotropic breathwork: A combination of modern psychology, spiritual practices and consciousness that uses different types of breathing to create alternate mental states that give rise to the body’s natural ability to heal. Iridology: Every organ has a corresponding point in the eye. Iridologists look at the eye to determine the body’s state of health or illness. Journaling: The act of writing down thoughts and feelings can be therapeutic. Partly because we can acknowledge discord in our lives without fear of judgement, and partly, because very often we already have the solutions to our problems and frustrations. Kinesiology: This involves tapping into the body’s own wisdom and communicating with the body and organs directly to bring about maximum healing. Light therapy: Uses exposure to natural (sun) light or specific wavelengths of artificial light for a specific amount of time. It helps reset the circadian rhythm and is effective for skin ailments and seasonal affective disorder. Meditation: Spend quiet time learning to listen. Whether you focus on your breath, go to a class, or use a technique like Transcendental Meditation, Mindfulness Meditation, Oneness Meditation, Vipassana, guided meditation or Yoga

Unani: Uses plants and herbs to treat a variety of ailments including sinus, leucoderma, rheumatism, colds and flu. Vitamin Therapy: A combination of vitamins to treat a range of illnesses and enhance overall functioning. For example, vitamin C has immune boosting properties and can be taken in moderate doses for prevention, or large doses for colds or flu. Wheat Germ is one of the wheat seed that feeds the young plant. It’s full of nutrients like zinc, Vitamin B and minerals as well as antioxidants. It also has a combination of fibre, protein and fats. Watermelon: the red pulp near the rind is filed with glutathione, an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system Water: Drinking plenty of water will keep your system hydrated, skin smooth and a sparkle in your eyes. Xylotherapy: An ancient therapy where wood is placed on or near the body. Today we’re more likely to use the essential oils of that wood on the body, like pine or eucalyptus, or even poultices from the sap. Yoga: Keeping yourself strong, fit and healthy, and moving energy through your body is a great way to prevent illness. So is creating a general sense of wellbeing and happiness – yoga is a great preventative. Zinc: Immunity is enhanced with proteins that prevent viruses from reproducing. Zinc can also shorten the duration and severity of colds and flu. Zoey Lapinsky is a yoga teacher, craniosacral fascial therapist and issue resolution consultant. Essentially we are bio-chemical beings and most of our ‘dis-eases’ can self correct with lifestyle and dietary changes, supported by natural remedies.

THE ABC OF ADRENAL HEALTH

by Nicole Bast

As a health consultant, almost daily, I encounter people struggling with the same batch of complaints: low energy levels, frequent fatigue, interrupted sleeping patterns, weight gain (especially around the abdomen), mood fluctuations (mostly towards the end of the happiness scale), muscle tension and cramps, and so on. These signs, when, presented together, are often an indication of adrenal overdrive or worse, adrenal fatigue.

did you know? About 65% of what goes onto the skin is absorbed transdermally and can affect us intrinsically. Yes, those laureath sulphates, parabens and pthylates influence the functionality of your hormones and organs. Soaps, creams, washing powders, cosmetics and the plethora of products our skin comes into contact with, are absorbed into the body and if they’re chemical laden, they can affect us negatively – despite what advertising tells us.

E

ssentially we are bio-chemical beings and most of our ‘dis-eases’ can self correct with lifestyle and dietary changes, supported by natural remedies. To help your body correct imbalances, treat the root cause of dis-ease and promote wellbeing, follow these steps (as long as you have ruled out any possible dire medical reasons with the advice of a qualified medical professional)

1. REMOVE PARASITES Before starting any course of corrective treatment, lay the foundation by removing nutrient-depleting parasites (they crawl in thin and they climb out stout). Wormwood, Cloves, Garlic, Black Walnut, Wormseed, Neem, Grapefruit Seed Extract, etc. are a few effective examples of helminthic eradicators to support purging helping you live life well

of worms (round, tape, pin and hook, to name a few), protozoa, Candida and flukes. These additions can be added to food or taken as capsules or teas. Conclude this treatment with an on-going pre + pro-biotic protocol, to benefit the gut flora, which is debilitated by antibiotics, high sugar consumption and processed/ refined food-like substitutes. Do this by consuming cultured and fermented foods. They are highly restorative to intestinal flora and healthy functioning of nutrient assimilation and absorption.

Kefir is an enzyme-rich fermented drink made with kefir (yeast/bacteria) grains.

Tempeh is a cultured & fermented soybean product.

Multi-tasking raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar is rich in enzymes and potassium.

Soured cabbage (Sauerkraut) is fermented by the action of lactic acid.

As with the above, kimchi, is the natural fermentation of raw vegetables, with the added benefits of the ginger and garlic used as flavourings.

Miso is another fermented soy product, loaded with antioxidants particularly zinc and manganese.

Kombucha is a fermented tea widely venerated as the ‘Immortal Health Elixir’ in the East.

2. HERBS & SUPPLEMENTS Once the canvas has been cleaned, proceed to the colourful array of restorative herbs and supplements to promote biochemical harmony of the adrenal glands. Start with: 1. Magnesium. It is used in over 300 chemical reactions within the body, and amongst other functions it also metabolises cortisol, a hormone released from the adrenals during the flight or flight response towards a stressor. Magnesium is also a nerve tonic and so is a calmative for feeling ‘wired’. 2. According to a research study Vitamin C is found in some of its highest concentrations in the neurons of the Central Nervous System. I recommend taking Vitamin C from an Ester C rather than an ascorbic acid as the Ester variety has a neutral pH. Vitamin C helps heal damage caused by systemic inflammation from on-going physical, mental and emotional stress. 3. Opting for a painless method of administration, the Vitamin B12 transdermal patch will support the body. Methylcobalamin is a vital nutrient for overall health including red blood cell production, influencing dopamine levels, removal of hormones and DNA replication. 4. Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxine, is necessary for the production of serotonin and norephedrine, which assist in the transmission of signals in the brain wellnesswarehouse.com

3. ADAPTOGENS If your energy, stress and mood levels have not improved significantly, then try using an adrenal toner or adaptogen like: 1. Ashwagandha significantly reduces cortisol concentrations and the immunosuppressant effect of stress. 2. Rhodiola Rosea is documented as effective in relieving the effects of fatigue and ‘burnout’ caused by stress and neuroprotective against toxins. 3. Panax (as in panacea means ‘heal all’) ginseng is used as a general tonic and heralded for its therapeutic effect on concentration, physical stamina and endurance. 4. Sceletium acts as a serotonin-uptake inhibitor and decreases anxiety and tension. 5. The antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits of Olive Leaf offer ample support to the body. Finally, it is vital to make sure you nourish your system to further support optimal biochemistry. The easiest way to do this is with gluten free super powders. The top three are: 1. Vibrant Health Maximum Vibrance is a multi-vitamin with an antioxidant that contains enzymes and immune support ingredients together with a green food and protein supplement. It truly is the master of green powder power.

Vitamin C Vitamin C has traditionally been used to treat and prevent the common cold. It’s one of the most important antioxidant vitamins and is useful if you’re anaemic because it helps the body absorb iron. Vitamin C supplements can sometimes be acidic, so if you’re looking to supplement consider a ‘buffered’ formulation. We recommend Solgar Ester-C. This is a pH neutral source of vitamin C that is more easily absorbed and used by the body. At the same time, it’s less likely to cause digestive trouble. If you have any questions about which vitamin C supplement is right for you, ask in store. We’ll be happy to help you out.

Information Highway: The body is a huge information network that’s run, in part, by the nervous system. In short, this is our fight-flight or restrelaxation response. Whichever state our mind is in, our brain sends chemicals to the rest of the body to tell it to amp everything up or let it chill down. We forget that our bodies are intelligent and they’re trying to communicate with us.

It’s about balance: When the body is in survival mode, geared for the fight-flight response, it blocks communication and information because it’s in survival mode, nothing goes in, nothing goes out. When it’s in a restrelaxation response it’s so laid back it hardly has any boundaries and gets bombarded with too much information, some of which may be irrelevant or erroneous. Here, too much goes in and out. Our ultimate state of health is when we are geared to let the right information in and discard any wrong or superfluous information allowing time for ourselves to protect, grow and repair.

Dis-ease: Dis-ease falls into two categories, under or over production. And this is largely decided by which part of the nervous system is in control.

The myth of genetics Many people have heard that if a disease runs in the family, we’ll inherit it too. This is only partly true. What we inherit is a predisposition for a dis-ease. Genetic predispositions are now understood to rely more on external factors, called epigenetic factors, rather than what we’ve inherited from our families. Just like some bugs prefer winter to summer, when we change our inner perceptions it’s like we’ve literally changed our internal landscape from winter to summer. So those predispositions stay just that, instead of inheriting the illness, we stay in wellness.

Redefining Dis-ease: Dis-ease is the genius of the body letting us know there’s something in our lives we’re ungrateful for. If it’s ourselves, we tend towards dis-eases that have to do with a dominance of our rest-relaxation nervous system response. If we’d like to change those around us, then we tend

towards dis-eases that have to do with fight-flight nervous system dominance. Our bodies are continually trying to communicate with us. Every symptom, every ache and pain is our body’s way of letting us know there’s something in our lives we have a skewed perception of. Either we’re trying to change ourselves to be more like others, or others to be more like ourselves. Illness is feedback from the body to bring our minds back to a state of wellness.

The truthful track Dis-ease is here to keep us truthful to our authentic selves. To keep us alert to anything we’re ungrateful for in our lives. It’s our tap on the shoulder to keep us balanced.

Where to from here: Next time you have a sign or symptom of illness ask yourself, ‘what’s going on in my life?’ What am I not appreciating, or what am I seeing in my way? See how it serves you until you can see it as being on the way rather than in the way. Find the hidden lesson and blessing and learn from that. Create a body that thrives not just survives. As actor Michael J Fox says,

“Parkinson’s has made me a better person. A better husband, father and overall human being. Life delivered me a catastrophe, but I found a richness of soul. I owe it to Parkinson’s, no doubt about that. ... I have no choice about whether or not I have Parkinson’s. I have nothing but choices about how I react to it. In those choices, there’s freedom to do a lot of things in areas I wouldn’t have otherwise found myself in.” Disease has been called the great equalizer. It gives many people great perspective. Dr Bruce Lipton says, “The moment you change your perception, is the moment you rewrite the chemistry of your body.” Zoey Lapinsky is a yoga teacher, craniosacral fascial therapist and issue resolution consultant. Skin Allergies

Many people have skin allergies, we look at common culprits that cause allergies and how to counter the effects.

T

here’s nothing fun about having an itchy skin, especially when you don’t know where it’s coming from. Here are some of the more well known sources of allergens. There are always alternatives, so if you’re prone to allergies or have sensitive skin, try and avoid the triggers.

Beauty & Body products Of course fragrance is an issue with cosmetics but preservatives are also a concern. Redness, swelling, and hives tend to happen in people with allergies to specific ingredients, like formaldehyde, parabens, and thimerosal. What many people don’t look out for is the allergens in nail varnish that hasn’t yet dried. It’s a common cause of eyelid dermatitis. When its dry, it’s fine but one should avoid contact with eyes until its completely dry.

The better choice

Nickel A leading skin specialist says the most common allergy she sees is a reaction to nickel. Lots of jewellery products have nickel, even some gold jewellery. Look out for nickel in spectacle frames, metal fasteners – buttons, hooks, press studs and zips, belt buckles and watch straps. Metals used in body piercings often have nickel. When purchasing products, see if you can see a nickel-free label.

Latex Latex is a milky fluid taken from rubber trees and processed into things like rubber gloves, balloons, condoms, rubber bands and various other products. If contact with latex makes your skin red and itchy that’s a sign you could be allergic. Latex allergy can also manifest in more severe symptoms like itchy eyes, difficulty breathing and vomiting.

Hair Dye If you have a reaction from hair dye you’ve probably come into contact with paraphenylenediamine (PPD). This is normally mixed with peroxide to get a permanent hair colouring. Many people with a sensitivity to PPD will also be sensitive to ingredients found in semipermanent hair dyes. Henna found in hair dye and in tattoos is also another allergenic. It’s important to test a small area if you think you might be sensitive.

The better choice

Fragrance & Perfumes Allergies to perfumes and fragrances are on the rise. Fragrances are used in hundreds of products, from shampoos, soaps and body washes to room sprays, detergents and household cleaners. Look for fragrance free products and don’t be misled by products labelled ‘unscented’. Even those can cause allergies because they may have a fragrance in them designed to block scent. Some natural oils also cause allergic reactions so be aware of that too.

Poisonous Plants Plants like poison Ivy, Oak and Sumac contain the oil urushiol, that can cause an allergic reaction. Not everyone will react to it though but if you are the include itchy skin, redness, hives, and blisters. Sometimes urushiol sticks to pet fur, firewood or shoes so look out for secondary contact with this substance.

Bare skin against wool often reacts in a rash from the texture of the fabric. Fabricrelated allergy is usually from formaldehyde resin. These are used to waterproof fabric and make them shrink and wrinkle resistant. They’re often found in elastic too. If affected, you might experience burning eyes, skin rashes, and chest tightness. Look for untreated natural fabrics or those only lightly treated. You should be okay with pure cotton, polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Also be aware that it might be the softener or washing powder you are allergic to.

Some sun creams only become allergic when exposed to ultraviolet sun rays. That’s because some are converted into allergens with sun exposure. This is known as a photocontact allergy, or photoallergic reaction. Avoid sunscreens with PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid), benzophenones, oxybenzone, salicylates, and cyclohexanol.

The better choice

Household Cleaners Many of the products we keep below the sink are culprits. These include solvents and adhesives. One of these, cyanoacrylate, is found in most superglues. Organic solvents, used to dissolve stains and grease or potent solvents like charcoal lighter fluid, paint thinner, furniture stripper, and nail polish although they are more like irritants, they often induce skin allergies. An allergic reaction will look like hives, or red patches that are usually very itchy.

The better choice

Creams & Potions Neomycin is the offender in antibiotic creams and ointments used for cuts, pain relief or ear and eye drops. If you are allergic or sensitive to neomycin you will get an inflamed rash wherever you’ve applied it. Remember to tell your dentist and doctor to avoid products with neomycin.

The better choice

did you know? “Allergic contact dermatitis” is the term used for a rash or irritation of the skin that happens when allergens (substances that the immune system reacts to as foreign) touch your skin. It’s estimated that atopic dermatitis affects up to 3 percent of adults.

She had a revolutionary idea: that she would make more time for life’s truly important things, first on the list: breathing.

LIVING YOGA By Zoey Lapinsky

It’s easy to practice yoga when you love doing it. Bring commitment, dedication, passion and strength to your practice with some guiding principles.

Y

oga can be the most glorious way to move your body. The combination of breath and movement calms the mind and facilitates a creakfree body and clear disposition that will banish any winter blues. For those of you already familiar with it, you know what I’m talking about. For the uninitiated, here are some tips:

Practice not perfect

Yoga is an exploration, a journey and a way of life. It’s an on-going practice and although it might look like you have to have an amazing, strong and flexible body to do yoga, anyone can start, it’s not about making pretty shapes, it’s about moving your body. There’ll always be someone stronger, thinner, or more flexible than you. If you compare yourself to the person next

46

to you, or the picture in the magazine, you’re robbing yourself of your yoga experience. Start with your body, with your level of experience, and move intelligently from there. As Mr Iyengar says, “Yoga is a mirror to look at our bodies from within.”

Honour your body

Honour today’s body: wishing you had a different body is harmful to your body, your mind and your practice. Today’s body is different to the one you had 20, 10 or even 5 years ago. Just because you could throw yourself around as a child, doesn’t mean it’s appropriate for you now. With practice and patience your body will open.

Breath is life

As Tich Nhat Hanh says, “Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, helping you live life well

which unites your body to your thoughts.” Breathing properly has so many benefits, it can make your practice so much easier and give you the strength and impetus to master your poses. Deep purposeful breathing releases toxins, releases tension and anxiety, relieves emotional distress, eases pain, improves blood quality, elevates your mood and releases pleasure inducing chemicals in your body. A great way to start a yoga session is to take time out to breathe. Sit or lie in a comfortable position, close your eyes and just notice your breath. Let your belly relax so that you can feel it moving in and out as you breathe.

Find your pace & style

Go slow - find a pace that works for you. Many of the people you see in yoga pictures are ex-ballerina’s and gymnasts.

DO: Check your competitive edge at the door. Yes, we all want to be the best, but this is not a race to perfection, it’s a gift to yourself. If you can’t touch the floor today – great, try again tomorrow!

al

Namaste is pronounced nahmas-stay and means: My soul honours your soul. I honour the place in you where the entire universe resides. I honour the light, love, truth beauty and peace within you, because it is also within me. In sharing these things we are united, we are the same, we are one.

DO: Pay attention to how you move into and out of postures. We get so caught up in trying the right pose that we forget to try the right way. Get the form right and the depth, flexibility and strength will come

al

Be solid: pause and feel grounded at the place you start your pose. This will be the part of your body that’s touching the floor - your feet, your buttocks, your back, your hands, depending on the pose. You can extend this idea to your mind and feel grounded in your headspace. When you move in or out of a pose: find yourself at your base, then work out what your spine must do to get into the pose, then move your legs, your arms and lastly your head. This ensures your back and belly are engaged and muscles are activated and strong. To come out, move in the reverse order to how you came in. Yoga’s about connecting your mind and your body. Get out of your thinking space and notice what it feels like to move. Most yoga injuries happen on the way out of a pose, because we’re already focusing on the next thing that we forget about what’re we’re doing in this moment. Stay present.

DO: Make it something you do daily. Don’t have an hour or more. No problem. Find how much time you can give yourself. Maybe it’s just a few minutes sitting in the car breathing calmly before a meeting, maybe its 5, 10, or 20 minutes of breathing, mudras or sun salutations. Shift your concept of what a good yoga practice is and surprise yourself by finding today’s win, did you manage to take a deep breath – great!

FIND YOUR KEYS Marilyn Paul wrote a book with lots of tips on de-cluttering and she called it, “It’s hard to Make a Difference When You Can’t Find Your Keys.” Having a designated space for things you use regularly can save huge amounts of time and frustration. Make rules about where useful things go. BAN CHEMICALS Most people have no idea how many harmful chemicals are in their houses. Decide to go completely natural, change all your cleaning agents and body products and start using chemical free products. You can even make your own – look for recipes online. You will sift out any irritants and have a much calmer more harmonious home. HAVE DELICIOUS SNACKS Food is one of the best ways to create warmth in a home. Have lots of jars of delicious healthy snacks everywhere like nuts, dates balls, seed crackers, cacao squares and keep the fridge stocked. Things like good coffee, properly brewed tea and little treats are memorable comforts that create warmth and good energy.

Create a HAPPY HOME Our homes should inspire us to go out into the world and do great things then come back to be grounded and nourished. If we keep them cosy, loving, chemical free, ambient and inviting we are very likely to achieve this. Here are some ideas to start off with.

Paint the front door

LIGHT UP Before anyone turns on the lights, light some candles. They create beautiful ambient light and a wonderful atmosphere. UNITE THE FAMILY Display personal mementos, family photos and favourite quotes around the house to unite the family and remind each other of the bond you have. SET UP A RITUAL Set an intention for your day. The Dali Lama says “”Every day, think as you wake up: today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it.” Use that to maximize your day and create appreciation. Get everyone in house to set one too and then swap thoughts about the intentions everyone made. MAKE EXPERIENCES HAPPEN Spend money on things that create a fun home. A great braai area, a space for yoga, a hammock garden, board or ball games or whatever it is that’s likely to create spontaneous fun.

Make it a really bright colour. Before anyone comes through the door they will be infused with energizing happy feelings. Bright yellow, fire engine red or turquoise are all good options.

TIP

did you know? Research shows that people who make their beds feel more organised and happier throughout the day. It’s an act that sets up other good habits in the day. 48

CREATE A PLAYLIST Music is highly inspiring and can change anyone’s mood. Make a point of putting together a playlist with sounds that aren’t too disruptive but work as background music. If you have a big family make a special playlist that includes two special requests from each family members.

If you want the ultimate green-friendly, cost saving device, get yourself a Spindel. It’s a dinky little machine that saves you from having to use a clothes dryer. High speed centrifugal force removes every last drop of water in a couple of minutes. It’s also very safe for delicate fabrics and because it doesn’t use heat, it can be used on many fabrics unsuitable for the standard dryer. It’s a real cost saver and good for the environment. THE POWER OF ORANGE It’s odd to wipe toxic chemicals all over your oven, floors, counters, and toilets in order to get them “clean,” but that’s just what the majority of us do with conventional cleaners. Advertisers spent billions in 2011 to entice shoppers to buy more and more stuff. So it’s not surprising that our homes are full of things we don’t even use — or like. This stuff just so happens to be where a lot of toxic chemicals lurk. It’s the small changes that make the big differences over time. Cleaning products are necessary for maintaining attractive and healthful conditions in the home and workplace. In addition to the obvious aesthetic benefits of cleaning, the removal of dust, allergens, and infectious agents is crucial to maintaining a healthful indoor environment. When considering natural cleaning in your home or office you should be thinking orange. Triple Orange are eco-friendly products that simplifies your life by providing you with a non-toxic solution to all your cleaning requirements. With Triple Orange Wonder Gel doing all the hard work of cleaning and Triple Orange Bio-Det taking care of your laundry, you only need two things: •

EAT THIS, NOT THAT

Pets can’t eat everything that humans can. Feeding your little pooch chocolate might seem cute but could prove hazardous. Follow this guide to keep your animals safe. XYLITOL - Even small quantities can be harmful and cause an insulin release that leads to liver failure. Signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination. RAW MEAT - Raw meat can carry dangerous pathogens and parasites like Spirocerca Lupi. Cook red meat until it turns pink, to kill any harmful parasites and pathogens. CHOCOLATE, COFFEE, CAFFEINE – Methylxanthine in chocolate and caffeinated products can cause symptoms like: vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors and seizures. ALCOHOL - Alcoholic drinks and food with added alcohol can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma and even fatalities. AVOCADO - Persin is the aggravator in avocados. It’s found in the leaves, fruit, seeds and bark and can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Birds and rodents are also sensitive to avocado poisoning, and can develop congestion and difficulty breathing. MACADAMIA NUTS - Macadamia nuts can cause symptoms in domestic animals like body weakness depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia. The symptoms appear up to a day after eating nuts and can last about 48 hours. GRAPES & RAISINS - There is a risk that grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure. MILK - Domestic animals don’t have significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), so milk and milk-based products can cause diarrhea and digestive problems. SALT - Too much salt can produce excessive thirst and urination, or even sodium ion poisoning. Be sure to check how much salt is included in the meals you give them. The flight of birds reminds us of our higher self and allows us greater vision; birdsong soothes our soul.

Nature Cure

Birds are the perfect entry point into nature. Once you become aware of birds you learn to tune into the natural world wherever you are. Although they live close to us, they travel far and wide. And because humans and birds are both warmblooded vertebrates, we share a physiology. This means we can take cues from birds as to what might be happening externally.

N

obel Prize-winner and author Peter Doherty recognises the value of birds as representatives of the wider natural world. Rather than as ambassadors, though, Doherty views birds as prophets of a sort, as “sentinels, sampling the health of the air, seas, forests and grasslands that we share with them.” He believes when we are aware of the way subtle human actions can impact birds, we can begin to take responsibility for the health of birds, humans and the Earth.

Regular accessibility to birdlife creates a strong sense of kinship in many people. We speak to Richard Morris from Starke Ayres Garden Centre about the elements you need to attract more birds to your garden.

Birds help keep the cycles of nature in balance: they pollinate plants, distribute seeds, eat carcasses and recycle nutrients back into the earth. But they also feed our spirits, marking the passage of the seasons, moving us to create art and poetry, inspiring us to flight and reminding us that we are not only on, but of, this earth. Melanie Driscoll, director of Bird Conservation in the Gulf of Mexico

This will attract all types of birds. Even if you are going on a picnic or camping you can take one with to attract birds.

Trees Grow trees with fruit or with nesting options. Smaller birds love thorn trees as they provide protection for them. If you want to attract butterflies plant a Wild Peach Kiggelaria Africana.

Shrubs

Nectar Bottle

Plant visually pleasing seasonally flowering shrubs that vary in height and have lots of nectar or nutritious seeds or berries.

Grasses Use indigenous or ornamental grasses that can be used for building nests.

Birdfeeders Keep a variety of seeds on hand for your birdfeeder. Not all birds will eat from a feeder and not all birds eat fruit or seed but most can be enticed by using vegetarian suet (make sure it’s vegetarian though as animal fat becomes rancid in the sun and can make your birds ill).

Feeding Table Create an area in your garden that’s set apart from your living area, and is densly planted or even neglected and overgrown, and preferably inaccessible to pets. This will be the perfect place to put a feeding table with a nectar bottle and a selection of fruit, seed and suet. Multiple feeding stations in various parts of the garden will allow larger doves to feed as well as less domesticated smaller birds.

Birdbaths You can find birdbaths in all shapes and sizes. A hanging one is useful if you have an intrepid cat. A cement plinth or a round self standing one can look attractive in a garden.

Place your bird baths in a shady part of the garden near a tree – it will be much more popular than one in full sun with no coverage.

Seasonal Plants These offer a continuous supply of food for birds and include Aloes, Watsonias, Leonotis (Wild Dagga) or Protea and Pincushion spp. Plants that provide nectar during winter are Daisies, Cape Honeysuckle, Strelitzia, Carissa (Num-num with its fragrant flowers and edible berry), Pyracantha (Firethorns), Hibiscus, Bottlebrushes, and in the shade the ever rewarding Odontonema stricta (Fire spike) which has red colourful flowers loved by Sunbirds.

the suet in a hanging spring they will provide endless entertainment flapping their wings upside down and chirping madly. This will also prevent squirrels running away with the food. Robin chats are never found on a table feeder but love scratching around in the leaf litter looking for worms, beetles and food scraps fallen from the feeders above. Dehydrated Meal worms are loved by most birds, soften them in hot water before placing on your feeder – this will put the birds into a frenzy. You can now get dehydrated meal worm in non-melt vegetarian suet which birds absolutely love.

GO ORGANIC Organic gardening is ideal – without insecticides you will attract a wide variety of insects vital to supplement your birds dietary requirements. Organic gardening balances your ecosystem - birds are highly efficient when it comes to controlling gnats and mosquitos. Birds eating poisoned aphids or caterpillars stand the real risk of being poisoned themselves.

Providing a birds natural diet is best but this may not be available in sufficient quantity throughout the year to sustain breeding stability and bird health. Fruit is ideal for Bulbuls, White eyes, Weavers, Mousebirds and Sparrows. You can feed them split naartjies, pears, apples, watermelon rind, sweetcorn (uncooked) or a piece of butternut on a fruit spike. An inexpensive non-melt vegetarian suet will be eaten by White eyes, Whydahs, Weavers and Mousebirds. The also eat seed. They’re the acrobats in the garden and if you put

Provide a raised bird bath on a plinth of at least 60cm high Have at least 3 of the following plants in your garden, Tecoma capensis “Cape Honey suckle” Leonotis leonorus “Wild Dagga” either orange or white variety Aloe spp. “A mixture of winter and summer bloomers” Lonicera heckrottii “Coral honeysuckle” Halleria lucida “Tree fuchsia” Protea repens or any Leucospermum spp. “Pincushions” Put a few nectar bottles in the garden – perhaps two with nectar and one with just water. Invest in a fruit stick for hanging seasonal fruit A feeding table with seed, fruit and suet slabs or wedges is popular with most birds (especially non-melt vegetarian suet with added meal worms) Put a suet spring in the garden for the acrobatic birds (this will exclude any pesky squirrels)

ABOUT YOUR NECTAR BOTTLE A nectar bottle can be either a glass or plastic bottle with a lid and a drip pipe or drip mechanism that allows the nectar to slowly fill a tray for birds to enjoy. They are refillable and can be cleaned. The mixture you use in your bottle is generally sugar water. The best mix is a 15-25 percent solution of plain table sugar (sucrose) or brown sugar is even better. It’s easy to prepare and doesn’t ferment easily. In a research study by Mark Brown and Steven Piper (documented in the Africa Birds and Birding: Issue 2009 Vol 14, no5) The University of KwaZulu-Natals Avian Physiologists found that different birds were attracted to higher or lower concentrations of simple sugar based nectar but that most (except starlings) are not fussy when the sugar concentration is higher than 10%. Starlings lack the enzyme sucrase needed to break down sucrose into glucose and fructose. All the other birds tested do well on sucrose and digest it almost as efficiently as plant sugars. Make sure your bottle is hygenic and be sure to wash with warm soapy water before every fill. Remember that gardening for wildlife is not something you can do in a few days or weeks. Start small, have a good plan, get access to a reliable clean water supply, make clever planting choices and let nature take over. Within a year or so your garden will be a hive of activity, you will be co-existing with nature and best of all you won’t have to sell up and move to the country.

Book REVIEWS

In the book Smile which we’ve reviewed below, Nicola quotes Benjamin Lander who says, “In the measurement world, you set a goal and strive for it. In the universe of possibility, you set the context and let life unfold. We love the idea of inspiring our ‘context’ with the many amazing titles we have access to. This month, be happy, start smiling, ditch stress, bring on a flat tummy and make some fermented food.

THE STRESS CURE by Patrick

Publishing)

Holford and Susannah Lawson (Piatkus)

From me to you, it says in the front. And that’s exactly how the book feels when you read it. Cherished quotes, lyrics, stories, poems and thought fragments carefully selected by Nicola were initially bound into a book to give to friends and people she loves. Much acclaim and success urged this book into publication for a wider audience. It’s called ‘Smile’ and is Nicola’s heartwarming offering with quotes from everyone from Osho, Oriah Mountain Dreamer, Jacques Cousteau, Paulo Coehlo, Maya Angelou to Nelson Mandela, Ralph Waldo Emerson and more. Twenty percent of profits generated from this book go to Earthchild in support of a yoga programme for children.

Stress is a biggie in most people’s lives. Patrick Holford shows the reader how to fuel up with energizing food and feel-good nutrients; how to increase energy naturally, and escape stimulant traps (think sugar, caffeine etc). When you uncover your stress triggers and self-defeating negative beliefs you can stop anxiety and panic and you’ll end up sleeping better and managing your time better. If you want to build resilience to make yourself stress-proof then this is the book for you.

So if it’s pickled fish, miso, ginger beer, cloudy kombucha, rejuvelac, yoghurt or any other exotic or simple recipe you’re after, you’ll find it in this comprehensive volume.

FLAT TUMMY FAST by James Duigan (Kyle Books) This is another best-seller in the Clean & Lean series James Duigan is renowned for. James is famous for training celebrities and supermodels, (Elle Macpherson, Hugh Grant and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley are some of his clients). Learn about the things that contribute to belly fat, how to eat your way to a flatter tummy, the importance of sleep and the dangers of too much stress. The book is filled with interesting case studies, recipes, exercises, tips and good information.

THE ART OF FERMENTATION by Sandor Ellix Katz (Chelsea Green)

Smile is on sale at The Shala Yoga studio. Join in the support by going to their special fundraising yoga class on 25th July from 19h00 to 21h00. The class is R200, all of which goes to Earthchild.

Your gut is the starting point of your immune system and contains a plethora of nutrients, bacteria and sometimes pathogens.

PICKLES &

PREGNANCY By Skye Forrester

Start right from the beginning. Focus on giving your baby a strong immunity.

Y

our new-born’s immune system is not nearly as effective as yours, and it can take months before your little one is able to fight off infection as efficiently as a more matured body. The good news is your pregnant body is geared up to pass on exactly what your baby needs to build solid defence mechanisms against disease and infection. Disease fighting anti-bodies made in your immune system make their way across the placenta and into your baby’s body. These anti-bodies provide an extra level of protection during your baby’s most vulnerable months until they are effectively able to make their own anti-bodies.

58

A gut feel

It starts with you, mom

Your gut is the starting point of your immune system and contains a plethora of nutrients, bacteria and sometimes pathogens. Your baby acquires some gut bacteria from your digestive system during pregnancy. The very first types of bacteria to make a home in your baby’s tummy will determine immune system function for the rest of his or her life. That’s why eating well and staying healthy during your pregnancy are the first steps in helping your baby’s immune system to develop.

The type and amount of antibodies passed to your baby depends on your immunity. There are many benefits to keeping healthy before conception and during pregnancy for you and your baby. Choosing foods low in sugar and fat, and eating a variety of fresh, nutritious foods go a long way in helping to build a strong immune system for your child.

system. Babies born through the vaginal canal receive different types of bacteria to babies born by caesarean section. Research consistently finds that using a doula or midwife can significantly reduce the necessity of a C-section. I’m not suggesting you squat under a tree when the time comes, however a natural birth is quite possibly the best thing you can do to safeguard the future of your baby’s immune system. After all, we are perfectly designed for the process.

The value of breast feeding Your breast milk is heaving with white blood cells and immunity-enhancing antibodies designed to safeguard your little one against all sorts of infections and allergies. One of the myriad benefits of breastfeeding is that your milk is easy to digest and gentle on your baby’s tummy. The thin, yellow ‘pre-milk’ that comes during the first few days after birth is known as colostrum. This pre-milk is especially rich in disease-fighting anti-bodies. The World Health Organization recommends that mothers breastfeed exclusively for the first six months of the baby’s life. Research suggests that, if you are able to, you should aim to breastfeed your baby for at least the first two to three months after giving birth to enhance the immunity your baby got while you were pregnant. By breastfeeding, you are setting your child’s immune system up for a lifetime of good health.

did you know? a German study has found that babies who sleep on animal fur for the first three months of life are almost 80% less likely to have asthma when they’re six years old? Previous research has found that children who grow up around animals are also less likely to develop asthma and allergies because the microbes in animal skins help to build up a stronger immune system.

WAYS TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WHILE PREGNANT 1. Vitamin D is vital. In South Africa, we’re lucky enough to be exposed to sunshine most of the time, but it’s still a good idea to eat foods rich in Vitamin D as well. Cod liver oil is a great source of Vitamin D, as are oily fish and portabello mushrooms.

2. Vitamin A plays a big role in your immunity. Be very careful about taking synthetic supplements, however, as this can be dangerous to your baby. Get yours naturally with sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, winter squashes, lettuce, dried apricots, cantaloupe, bell peppers, fish, liver, and tropical fruits. 3. Probiotics are key to maintaining your immunity. Fermented food is a great source of probiotics, and that may be why many women experience a craving for pickles while pregnant. 4. Nutrients are difficult to come by in today’s world – try to eat organic and fresh at all times, but you may need to supplement with a good multivitamin as well. 5. A deficiency in magnesium leads to lowered immunity, headaches and fatigue. Magnesium can also be an effective way to ward off morning sickness.

On some level an adaptive adolescent brain can be seen as an exquisitely sensitive, highly adaptable creature wired almost perfectly to move from the safety of home into the wide open world outside.

TAPPING INTO

TEENAGERS

Most parents experience extreme frustration and confusion when their children become teenagers. More than 2,300 years ago, Aristotle’s observation was that ‘the young are heated by Nature as drunken men by wine.’ But besides all the hormones, teenagers have a host of structural changes in the brain. New research has shown that our brains undergo a massive reorganisation between the years of 12 and 25. It’s not that the brain grows much during this period – by the age of 6 the brain is already 90% of its size. What happens is an extensive revamp similar to a full network and wiring upgrade. Understanding the process and the differences will help you interact in a positive way with your teenager. We speak to psychologist Georgina Vintin about negotiation and trust building.

W

ith the Terrible Two’s, toddlers begin asserting their independence as they begin to develop the ‘self’. Teenage temper tantrums are often about the same thing, just further down the line. Teens have to gain an understanding of themselves in the world they live, and develop their own identity. An abundance of hormones to equip them with their personal physical growth can also cause emotional challenges. They may feel overwhelmed with emotions at times and as parents we must give them space to process their strong feelings, and not take things personally. When seeing teenage tantrums as an expression of independence, then what we’re really talking about is the need to build more trust. How can we trust our teenagers to take risks, to do new things and develop into adults but also to be safe? When I work with teenagers and parents I often talk about negotiation. What can be negotiated between teenagers and parents over time to allow a smooth transition, with some risk but also some safety? It’s helpful to think about the notion of ‘safe uncertainty’. There will always be some unknowns, and risks need to be taken. What comes with this is building trust. It’s important to be explicit when talking about this journey with your adolescent. It is a shared experience and something you want to support them with. If you look at the basis of most of the arguments we have with teenagers you’ll find they’re mostly about trust.

did you know? Teens tend to grossly overestimate certain risks, things like unprotected sex and drug use, and not to underestimate the risks as one would predict. Researchers surmise that teens’ notorious risk-taking behaviour doesn’t come from immunity to known risks, but rather, from a greater tolerance to uncertainty and ambiguity for unknown risks.

Because we’re heavily influenced by our own experiences of growing up it’s a good idea to check that we’re bringing the good aspects of our childhoods into our parenting and not the bad one’s.

Check where you’re coming from by asking yourself a few questions: •

What drives my ideas about how much freedom I allow my teenager and how much risk I am willing to take? Is this based on my own experience as a teenager and how I was parented?

In light of this, what do I choose to do differently? What safety measures or support do I need to do this?

How do we negotiate with teenagers to allow freedom in a safe way?

What do I think about trust in general? Do I find this hard or easy? Why?

How do we structure specific conversations with our teenager about building more trust and earning more freedom?

How can my partner or peers support me through this time?

Our philosophy is keeping the product pure and fresh, and using only the finest botanical oils to enhance and nourish your skin, naturally. Shea butter, organic cocoa butter and coconut oil whipped up with rich macadamia and marula oils, together with essential oils guarantee the highest quality in body care products.

Pamper yourself with our body scrubs, rich creamy body butters, skin renewal oils and soak away your stress in rose bath salts

It’s important that this becomes a conscious process where we understand the true meaning of teenage tantrums and are aware of the position we take as parents. By being conscious we’re more likely to avoid an emotional rollercoaster, and equip our teenagers and ourselves with positive skills and strengths to deal with this phase of life. Meet our Wellness Ambassador Remo Belluco Deal with stress and negative emotions by spending time in nature, doing yoga and tai chi, laughing with friends and taking time out from daily stressors.

A

key factor in preventing the negative effects of ageing is maintaining a healthy immune system. Immune system imbalances are at the heart of not only a recurrent cold or flu, but many auto-immune related chronic conditions as well as cancers. The good news is that the recipe for a healthy immune system is a simple one, rooted in healthy lifestyle and nutritional choices. Numerous factors influence our health, we look at them in these categories: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Stress and emotional well-being Exercise and physical activity Diet and nutrition Environmental influences

Rather than focusing on one of these areas, paying attention to all of them simultaneously will bring the result we’re after. Stress hormones are inflammatory, so is a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and toxic environment. Inflammation and our immune system are intimately connected. While inflammation is part of a healthy immune response, chronic inflammation leads to a deterioration of the immune system.

62

To build a healthy immune system we need balance. Deal with stress and negative emotions by spending time in nature, doing yoga and tai chi, laughing with friends and taking time out from daily stressors. Daily physical activity is highly important and has the added benefit of helping the body rid itself of residual stress. Diet and nutrition is an area we interact with numerous times a day and should receive close attention - ensuring we eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid potential immune antagonists like gluten and dairy. Lastly, keep in mind that although we live in a toxic world we can limit our exposure by using natural products on our bodies and in the house, and ensuring our body’s own detoxification systems are clear and working optimally. Supplementation is advisable especially during times of heightened stress or in winter when susceptibility to developing an infection is higher. Certain key nutrients help our immune systems stay balanced and in top form. This includes Vitamin C, Vitamin D (especially in winter), and the minerals Zinc and Selenium. Minerals are vital for daily functioning.

Herbs like Echinacea, Andrographis, Olive Leaf and Pelargonium are excellent immune boosters, along with medicinal mushrooms like Reishi, Cordyceps, Maitake and Shitake. We also have our household favourites, ginger and turmeric, which are brilliant at naturally reducing chronic inflammation.

Living a balanced lifestyle filled with healthy choices is the best way to build resilience – there’s much truth in the old adage, ‘prevention is better than cure!’

quick facts about

SPROUTING

They’re packed with goodness

A sprouted mung bean, for example, contains dramatically more vitamin B, B2 and niacin than an unsprouted bean. Sprouts usually contain more of the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E too.

Local and lekker

Sprouts are the ultimate locally grown food. When you grow your own food you know exactly where it comes from and what has gone into it. Your sprouts won’t contain pesticides and other chemicals added to foods when traditional growing techniques are used. Try and use organic or heirloom seeds.

It’s really easy

Sprouting is actually far easier than you might think. If you don’t feel like putting together your own sprouting equipment (all you need is a glass jar and some muslin) you can save time by investing in a sprouting kit. They often come with seeds so you can get started right away. You’ll have fresh sprouts ready to eat in a few days.

Did you know that Wellness sells sprouting kits? They’re available in stores

and online at wellnesswarehouse.com

Balance your pH

If you’ve tried the pH strips from Wellness Warehouse and found your body is a little acidic, sprouts could help. They’re alkalinising and can be great addition to an eating plan that focuses on keeping the body’s pH at an ideal balance. A highly acidic pH is associated with a number of diseases.

There’s lots of variety

The list is almost endless. Some of the most popular legumes for sprouting include radish, chickpea, mung bean, lentil and pea. You can also sprout nuts and seeds like cashews and sunflower seeds.
