EATING OUT F

Sababa

inding a spot to eat when you’re following a definitive diet is not always easy. We found 5 eating spots you’re going to love. So whether you’re a Banter, raw foodie or vegan, you’ll find something at one of these restaurants.

Sababa serves wholesome Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food prepared fresh daily. The owners believe in making everything from scratch so they know exactly what goes into every dish. Sababa uses fresh and seasonal products and believes in supporting local farms and suppliers. They also make some of the best hummus in Cape Town. Their spinach, mushroom and onion bake is delicious and they’re famous for their selection of fresh, tasty salads. Shop 1, 231 Bree St, Cape Town sababa.withtank.com

65 on Main 65 on Main Lifestyle Food & Banting Café, known to its fans as 65 on Main, was the first restaurant in Cape Town to offer an exclusively low-carb, high-fat menu. It was conceptualised by Whitney Wentzel, who is considered Cape Town’s ‘Banting queen’. She believes in ‘eating clean’ and that you are what you eat, which is the philosophy behind the restaurant’s menu. Their pizza, and chocolate brownie cheesecake is a must. 65 Main Rd, Green Point, Cape Town www.65onmain.com

helping you live life well

And for our Jozi community… Conscious 108 Conscious 108 is probably Jozi’s most loved vegan restaurant. The owners believe in making food that is ‘relatable, taking the best of what you love about food and translating that into consciously made, plant-based meals. Try their Karmic Bowl, featuring their own homemade seitan with caramelised onion mash and sautéed spinach. Conscious 108 pride themselves on being family friendly and have a range of board games for patrons to play. 108 Greenway Road, Greenside, Johannesburg conscious108.co.za

Raw and Roxy Raw and Roxy is in the heart of trendy Woodstock. Raw vegan pastas, salads, juices and ‘Love Elixirs’ are served fresh every day by Danish-born Beatrice Holst. Beatrice says she opened up Raw and Roxy because there weren’t that many places in Cape Town she could go to eat “interesting things that were raw vegan and order fresh juices that actually tasted good”. Raw and Roxy are aiming to be completely ‘garbagefree. They use only recyclable containers and compost much of their waste. Raw and Roxy’s menu changes often, everything is delicious but the raw desserts are a sensation. 300 Albert Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town

Dear Me Dear Me is an all-day brasserie, pantry and event space in Cape Town’s CBD. They serve early breakfasts (7am-11am) and lunch (12pm-3pm) Mondays to Fridays. The name ‘Dear Me’ is inspired by their understanding that different people have different needs when it comes to what they eat. That’s why they have a menu flexible enough for just about everyone. They believe you should be able to eat with Dear Me every day without compromising your foodie values. Their Turkish eggs are one of the stars on their breakfast menu. 165 Longmarket Street, Cape Town dearme.co.za

Low Carb Low-down

If you’re on a low-carb eating plan, then knowing how to read labels becomes even more important.

F

rom Banting to Dukan to LCHF; lowcarb eating is on everyone’s lips. But is it actually good for you? Dr Ugan Pillay looks at low-carb eating from a naturopathic perspective.

Is low-carb safe? Blanket diets aren’t suitable for everyone and the same applies to low-carb diets. A healthy low-carb diet cuts out refined carbs like white bread, pasta, potatoes and sugar. That’s because they all have a high glycaemic index – meaning they raise your blood sugar very quickly. When this happens, the body stores as much of the excess sugar as possible in the liver as glycogen or as fat. High blood sugar levels lead to inflammation, which sets off various dis-ease states. The amount of healthy, unprocessed, carbohydrate you should eat varies from person to person. Everyone metabolises nutrients differently, and you should always do what’s healthy for you.

What to watch out for Look for added sugars in food and avoid them. If you’re on a low-carb eating plan, then knowing how to read labels becomes even more important. Sugars in various forms are not only used to improve the taste of foods, but also to preserve them. Common added sugars to look out for include corn syrup, or high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, molasses, fructose and juices like apple. Focus on healthy eating with good quality proteins, complex carbs, liquid fats, micronutrients and fibre in the correct balance.

Specialised supplements Whey protein is a good supplement for nonvegans. It’s easily digested and absorbed. If weight loss is your goal on a low-carb diet, protein should prevent the potential loss of muscle mass while losing weight. A good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement is always a good idea. The micronutrients in multivitamins provide energy and help the body function optimally.

healthy eating plan.

did you know? Banting? Paleo? LCHF? What the? If low-carb terminology has you baffled, you’re not alone. Here’s everything you need to know. Banting Banting is a way of eating that emphasises low-carb foods and healthy fats. It’s believed to help balance blood sugar levels and allow the body to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Paleo Paleo is based on the idea that, for optimal health, we should go back to eating unprocessed real wholefoods. People who eat paleo usually avoid carbs in the forms of grains because they believe grains cause inflammation.

1.

LCHF Low-carb, high-fat, eating is very similar to banting. In fact, many banters consider themselves low-fat, high-carb, eaters. Low carb foods are emphasised and healthy fats are considered important for health.

2.

3.

Atkins The Atkins diet, popular in the 90s, focuses on ‘ketogenesis’, a process the body goes through when deprived of carbs, to encourage weight loss. It’s also a high protein diet.

Cauli Kedgeree Low-Carb Need something a little different and verylow carb for breakfast? Try kedgeree. A traditional English colonial breakfast, Kedgeree stems from a mishmash of Indian and colonial English origin. We use hake instead of haddock because it’s a more sustainable choice and cauli-rice because it’s low in carbs.

4. 5. 6. 7.

Place the fish and the bay leaves in a shallow pan and add enough water just to cover. Bring the pan up to simmering point and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain the fish and set aside. Melt the butter in a large pan and fry the onions until soft and golden. Add the ginger and garlic and fry for a further minute or two. Add the curry powder and mustard seeds and cook for 1 minute. Pour in the chopped tomato and lemon juice and simmer the sauce for a few minutes. While the sauce is cooking, flake the fish. Finally stir in the fish, cauli-rice, chilli and coriander and warm through. Season well with salt and pepper. Garnish with the eggs and serve.

HOW TO MAKE CAULI-RICE Preparation: Wash, remove core and leaves, trim, and coarsely chop a head of cauliflower. Remove any brown spots with a paring knife. Chop into pieces small enough for your food processor. Pulse until the cauliflower is the size of grains of rice or couscous. Note: Make sure the cauliflower is completely dry before you put it in the food processor.

on’t think for a moment that being on a raw food diet is going to deprive you. Raw foodists make some of the most delicious meals you will ever taste. There are many reasons people choose raw – most people feel amazing on a raw food diet, for starters they claim it gives them more energy. Fruits and vegetables are much easier to digest than meat, dairy and eggs. When your body isn’t working so hard to digest and process food, it has more energy for your brain and your body. Many say it’s cleared up longstanding health issues and help them sleep better. Living foods are easy on your system; they’re proven to reduce joint swelling and inflammation. Plant based food will lower insulin levels, reduce fat intake and increase dietary fibre. Besides, removing processed food will immediately help lose any extra kilos you might have. If you know anyone who eats raw you will also notice their eyes are very clear and skin is fabulous. You’ll never have to wash any pots again or use your stove. Going raw may not appeal to you but if it does, here’s how you do it.

did you know? Raw food is nutrient rich, because of that it fills us up faster and gives our bodies more of what we need with less food. That means less groceries and a lower food bill. No cooking means a better carbon footprint.

CAULIFLOWER SOUP Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

THE BASELINE: leafy greens

Leafy greens are high in nutrition yet low in cost. Chop them up and you’ll see they can be added to almost anything you eat to boost the nutrient content. Combining a number of leaves together can give you a rush of different tastes from sweet to bitter, and peppery to earthy. They’ll also colour your plate; think of the the bluish-green of kale to the dark green of spinach. Younger leaves usually have small, tender leaves and a mild flavour. More mature plants have tougher leaves and stronger flavours. Your Swiss chard, bok choy, and spinach are milder while arugula, mizuna and mustard greens are more peppery. Salad greens provide a whole range of nutrients and phytochemicals important for health. Adding chopped parsley, celery leaf or baby spinach boosts your nutrient content considerably. Dish up a bowl that includes many different flavours, cover it with the dressing below and you might not need anything else.

ALMOND CREAM DRESSING Makes 1 cup

INGREDIENTS ½ CUP ALMONDS 1 CUP NUT MILK (MAKE THIS YOURSELF BY BLENDING A THIRD CUP OF NUTS WITH TWO THIRDS OF A CUP OF SPRING WATER THEN STRAINING OUT THE PULP) 3 TBLSP COCONUT OIL

Blend all the ingredients together and pour over your salad.

THE FOUNDATION: fruit & vegetables

Fruit and vegetables are what you should eat most of. By blending, grating, chopping, making purees and combining flavours you will be surprised how delicious they can be. You can also dehydrate them to strengthen the flavour. Try this:

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

½ HEAD OF CHOPPED CAULIFLOWER 1 AVOCADO 1 CUP CHOPPED CELERY ¾ CUP SEED MILK ¼ CUP OF RADISH SPROUTS 1 TBSP KELP OR SPIRULINA POWDER JUICE OF HALF A LEMON 1 TSP SEASONING

Blend all the ingredients together. Serve with alfalfa or mung sprouts sprinkled on top.

THE POWER:

sprouts, shoots, legumes & microgreens Set up your own sprouting facility. It will be so worthwhile. Fresh alfalfa sprouts mixed with some sunflower shoots and mung bean sprouts drizzled with tahini mixed with honey is a snack you will soon be addicted to. Handfuls of sprouts are the perfect raw snack. They’ll energise you and make you happy. Purchase a glass jar, something to cover it with, some organic seeds, find a sunny window ledge and you can grow the ultimate food source practically for free. Sprouts have to be soaked, rinsed a lot and attended to. Find a good sprouting guide and make nurturing your sprouts part of your day.

THE MELODY:

nuts, seeds, nut butters and nut milks Nuts and seeds are deliciously addictive. Butters and milks can be used on their own, put with salad and veg or mixed with fruit to make desserts. They provide proteins and amino acids. The best way to get the most out of seeds and nuts is to soak them, it helps with digestion, so making them into butter or milk is perfect. Use seeds like sunflower and sesame and any kind of nut from cashew, almond and

RAW FRUIT CANDY

Brazil to walnut and macadamia. Here is a basic recipe for seed and nut milk. You can change the choice of nuts and seeds and use a different variation if you want.

INGREDIENTS

TIP

NUT & SEED MILK Makes: 1 cup

INGREDIENTS 1/3 CUP OF ANY NUT AND SEED (ALMOND, SESAME, BRAZIL NUT) 1 CUP SPRING WATER 2 TBSP HONEY 2 DROPS PURE VANILLA EXTRACT

Grind the seeds to a meal. Soak them for a few hours (or overnight) in the spring water. Blend all the ingredients together into a milk consistency. If you mix in some dried figs, dates or fruit like mango or banana you can make an irresistible dessert – you can even freeze it into ice-cream.

SEASONING

spices, minerals, herbs, powdered supergreens Give raw veg a punch with Himalayan salt, freshly ground spices, dried herbs and powdered super greens. You can make any flavouring you want by dehydrating veg and intensifying the flavour. Here is an example of a seasoning to get you going. Use different herbs and spices to suit your taste.

Soak the first three ingredients for 4 hours in enough liquid to cover them. Save the soak liquid. Blend well. Mix all the other ingredients together then work them into the fruit with your hands. Add some of the soak water until it’s very sticky. Make two rolls, wrap them in wax paper and freeze for an hour. This makes them easy to cut. Make them into balls or circles. If you want you can roll them in coconut or sesame seeds. Keep in the fridge.

Mix all ingredients together and store in a tightly sealed glass jar.

Fermented food is extremely rich in enzymes, pre-digested protein and lactobacillus bacteria. Culturally people that eat fermented foods live longer and don’t have digestive problems. Natural lactic acid and fermented enzymes produced are beneficial to the metabolism and are curative towards disease. They’re easily digested and improve the intestinal tract. These include sauerkraut, rejuvelac and fermented seeds. Rejuvelac is made by soaking wheat berries in spring water. This you do at a warmish temperature in a dark area for a few days. The result is a tart drink with a pleasant taste.

Raw. Fully. Nuts about coconut water? Known as ‘nature’s sports drink’, coconut water has a slightly sweet, nutty flavour. It’s a good source of electrolytes. It’s also low in sugar, contains zero fat, and has a few other health benefits, too.

What’s in a cup? Coconut water is the water tapped from the centre of green coconuts. It’s got fewer calories and sodium and more potassium in it than most sports drinks do, which is impressive. At the same time it’s lower in

R44

calories, all natural, and a great source of magnesium on the go. It contains other nutrients including small amounts of B vitamins, vitamin C and iron, too.

A better option Plain coconut water can be a good option if you’re looking for an alternative to water that is low in calories and diabetic-friendly (remember it does contain natural sugars). Because it contains electrolytes it’s a better hydrator than many other choices.

Coconut water is delicious in mocktails, fruit ices, and used instead of water in raw dishes too.

Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well. - Hippocrates (460-377BC)

CANCER:

Natural Treatment Alternative Cape Town’s Dr Janey, author of, Cancer...You Can Heal Yourself!, and founder of treatment programme ‘Survive and Thrive Cancer’, believes the answer to cancer requires a dramatic move away from modern medicine’s single-minded focus on the tumour. Here she explains why the current accepted approach to cancer is failing us, and weighs in with an alternative view.

C

ancer is a scary word for most people, and little wonder when we consider that current statistics suggest our risk of cancer is approaching 1 in 2. And what about the success rate when we do get cancer? In terms of chemotherapy, the most popular standard method of conventional treatment, the true ‘success’ rate of survival beyond five years of treatment is 2.1% in America and 2.3% in Australia as published in the ‘Journal of Clinical Oncology’, 2004 (from a study done by the Northern Sydney Cancer Centre). So why is the ‘War against Cancer’ failing us so dismally? The answer is in modern medicine’s obsession with the tumour. Think about it, the ‘Big 3’ (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation) are all focused on the tumour. But the tumour is only a symptom of cancer, and symptom-based approaches never offer lasting solutions. Focusing on the symptom, and failing to address the cause, means short-lived results with relapse as a likely consequence. A

24

complete and long-term solution to cancer, requires addressing the cause. When doing this, we find the cancer tumour disintegrates and disappears just as any symptom must do when the cause is addressed. Here are seven important steps we look at when addressing the cause. The steps form part of an integrated natural approach to cancer focusing on the primary cause and working in harmony with the body’s healing wisdom. It requires transforming your understanding and perception of cancer from your approach, your treatment, your experience of having cancer (or your fear of getting cancer) and your success in overcoming it.

1. Revitalize Your Immune System In truth, it is not the doctor that heals us, but rather our own ‘inner doctor’ that heals us as Hippocrates alluded over 2000 years ago. If an individual is sick we can assume their ‘inner doctor’ (immune system) has become overwhelmed and overburdened, frequently from years or decades of poor lifestyle habits, inappropriate dietary choices or ‘toxic’ thought patterns. To restore health, it’s crucial that

helping you live life well

each individual begins by ‘re-awakening’ and optimising the function of their own ‘inner doctor’. When the individual learns how to do this effectively, the infinite capacity of the body will lead the way back to full health.

People with diseases like AIDS and cancer feel an urgency in straightening out their lives, examining their purpose, and confronting the reality of death. Ironically, in spite of the physical and emotional pain they experience, many of these patients express gratitude for this opportunity. The encounter with their own mortality changes their priorities in life, their values and aspirations. For many, it makes them truly cherish life and the ability to give and receive love. - Jeff Seibert

2. Healing With Diet It’s easy to be confused by the volume of conflicting advice as to what is the most appropriate diet for vibrant health and healing. A cancer-healing diet returns to the fundamental physiology of our bodies and how they operate harmoniously with nutrition. It examines ‘what’ to eat’, and also ‘when’ and ‘how’ to eat in tune with the circadian rhythm governing everyday functioning to optimize absorption and digestion. A cancer healing diet promotes an optimal pH balance, and optimal tissue oxygenation, so vital in cancer.

3. Eliminating Toxins The process of detoxification initiated in Step 1 and 2, can be intensified. Our bodies are constantly involved in the processing and elimination of decaying cells and metabolic by-products. These in themselves can prove toxic if an ailing body is not able to eliminate them but in addition we are also regularly exposed to toxins from the environment. While our bodies are constantly at work neutralising toxins, a chronic build-up will in time overburden the immune system and can manifest in disease. Cleansing the body from years of toxic accumulation including heavy metals, is crucial in relieving this burden, and enabling oxygen and nutrients to get to the cells.

4. Avoiding Ongoing Exposure To Toxins While it’s essential to eliminate a pre-existing toxic load from the body, it is equally important to avoid ongoing exposure to toxins and carcinogens in our every-day environment. These come from diet, from modern technology, products we use in our homes and work environment and more. When we know the alternatives we can replace them with ease.

5. Harnessing The Nature’s Gifts Nature is an amazing healing agent that has powerful gifts we can access for free. Besides healing the body, engaging in nature will boost your daily enjoyment of life. Drinking enough pure water is a simple way of boosting your health. As they say, nature is nurture and spending time in nature brings healing.

6. Natural Cancer Remedies

spices have a far reaching beneficial effect on the body. These should be used as part of an entire lifestyle change and paradigm shift in mindset.

Dr. BOXALL’s GRAVIOLA 1000mg/serving Veg Caps 60’s

7. The Power Of The Mind When the mind is plagued with ongoing destructive emotions like guilt and low selfworth the immune system suffers and the body is susceptible to cancer. It’s not uncommon for cancer to manifest after a significant emotional trauma. Our mindset and how we perceive cancer can quite literally determine our experience of having cancer, as well as the outcome. There are numerous ways to use the mind to heal. The importance of mind/body connection (psychosomatics) in healing from cancer can’t be over-stated. Simply put; there are ‘no secrets’ between the mind and the body. While this is not an aspect that conventional medicine pays much attention to, it’s an important step that can facilitate complete healing from cancer.

About Dr Janey Dr Janey is author of the book, ‘Cancer... You Can Heal Yourself!’ which shares an empowering and transformative approach to cancer which has been well received around the world. Founder of ‘Survive and Thrive Cancer’, Dr Janey has a background in conventional medicine, specifically that of Veterinary Science. For more than 20 years she ‘walked the other side of the fence’ which involved to a large degree the treatment of cancer using the ‘Big 3’ approach. This left her with an intimate knowledge of this approach and it’s many shortcomings. Now, ‘Survive and Thrive Cancer’ is focused on educating and empowering individuals both locally and worldwide through talks, seminars, webinars and retreats by sharing the timeless principles of ‘true health’, and reminding individuals of their infinite capacity to prevent and heal from cancer. Dr Janey shares the powerful ‘7 Step Natural Cancer Program’ as a four-week Worldwide Webinar Series. The next one begins on 5 March 2015 with a FREE webinar. Cannabidiol oil from the Cannabis plant is growing in popularity in therapeutic use for psychiatric conditions, neuropathic pain, epilepsy and certain cancers.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA I

s it true that ‘medical marijuana’ can help fight cancer cells? Although research is ongoing, over twenty major studies in the past nine years have shown extremely promising results. Cannabidiol (CBD), a chemical component of the cannabis plant is said to arrest cancer growth in many different forms of cancer including brain, melanoma and breast cancer. Some studies suggest that cannabinoids cause direct anti-tumor activity. Besides cancer fighting, cannabinoid is noted for helping side effects like symptoms of nausea and vomiting, depression and low appetite as well as pain. Many cancer sufferers swear by the benefits. Up until now though, cannabinoid has not easily been available legally in South Africa. That’s mostly because cannabis also contains THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which has a psychotropic effect. It’s the component that people associate with ‘getting high’. While THC also has therapeutic benefits, it’s a double edged sword as many people cannot tolerate the effect in the psyche, especially on an ongoing basis. In a new development, cannabinoid extracts are available without the THC component - in a form that’s legal in South Africa. It’s a world first and hugely exciting for people interested in the therapeutic

26

effects. Now, cannabinoid oil can be used by those wanting to enjoy the benefits legally, without the high caused by THC. Cannabis cultivated for recreational use usually has higher levels of THC than cannabis cultivated for cannabidiol oil and industrial purposes – sometimes called industrial hemp. They’re the same plant but the recreational one can have up to an 8% THC content whereas the other has low levels of under 0.3%. Obviously, for recreational purposes, a higher THC content is favoured but the level required for that isn’t available through industrial hemp. Recreational cannabis is also used therapeutically but doesn’t offer the same levels of cannabinoid oil - and many people are intolerant to the psychotropic effects of the THC content. Cannabidiol oil has been found useful for conditions as far reaching as: Relieving pain; killing or slowing bacterial growth; reducing blood sugar levels; reducing vomiting and nausea; reducing seizures and convulsion; reducing inflammation; reducing risk of arterial blockage; inhibiting cell growth in tumours and cancer cells; treating psoriasis; managing psychosis through tranquilisation; helping you live life well

supressing muscle spasms; promoting bone growth; reducing contraction in the nervous system; protecting nervous system degeneration. For more information and research on Cannabidiol visit www.projectcbd.com

did you know? Cannabidiol is found naturally in the cannabis (hemp) plant. It is one of 85 chemical substances known as cannabinoids, all found in the cannabis plant. In isolation it is non-psychoactive and can’t make the user high or intoxicated.

Animal-assisted therapy has endless applications with numerous and measurable medical benefits.

NATURAL PET CARE By Paul Jacobson from Vondis Holistic Nutrition

THERAPY DOGS Trained ‘therapy dogs’ are being used to bring emotional relief in all kinds of situations from chronic illness to disaster victims. A non-profit organisation in New York called The Good Dog Foundation trains and certifies these dogs. “Certified Good Dog teams visit disaster victims, cancer patients, autistic children, first responders, wounded veterans, sufferers of posttraumatic stress disorder, children learning to read, stressed-out college students, nursing home residents, family members in surgery waiting rooms, hospice residents and many others,” says Moschell Coffey, managing director of The Good Dog Foundation. Occupational therapists working in rehabilitation centres are now including animal assisted therapy into treatment plans and there are also programmes in place for cancer sufferers. Researchers at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, found that patients experienced increases in emotional well-being and quality of life when they received visits from a certified therapy dog during the course of their chemotherapy treatments. “This study highlights the merits of animalassisted visits using the same scientific

28

standards as we hold for the cancer treatment itself,” Stewart B. Fleishman, MD, principal investigator and Founding Director of Cancer Supportive Services at Mount Sinai Beth Israel “Having an animal-assisted visit significantly improved their quality of life and humanised a high-tech treatment. Patients said they would have stopped their treatments before completion, except for the presence of the certified Good Dog Foundation therapy dog and volunteer handler.” J. Michael McFarland, Zoetis group director of Companion Animal Veterinary Operations, says. “There is mounting evidence in human and veterinary medicine that the emotional bond between people and companion animals can have a positive impact of emotional and physical health.” Paul from Vondis believes this is all the more reason to look after your dog as if he were your child by feeding him or her a healthy, wholesome natural diet and supplementing using natural holistic remedies. For all your puppies needs, accessories and guidance, feel free to pop into the Vondis store in Cape Town or email paul@vondis.co.za Doggie Daycare is also available. helping you live life well

Just as the moon’s gravitational pull on the earth creates the rise and fall of tides, our cellular fluids and polarity system is affected in the same way

Finding balance in polarity A

nyone wanting to make their life work effectively needs a good dose of balance. Inge Dougans, author of Reflexology; The 5 Elements and their 12 Meridians – A Unique Approach, explains how she found the ultimate guide to balance through the polarity of the waxing and waning moon. So impressed was she with the life changes and results she got that she now offers courses on polarity

30

theory. She explains a bit about her journey and how polarity theory can benefit anyone. Despite being a prominent celestial body, science hasn’t yet fully explained the effect the moon has on the earth. It’s always been a subject of fascination, from the way it seemingly disappers and reappears in its waxing and waning process to its association with the female menstrual helping you live life well

cycle and fertility. The root of the word menstruation and menses derive from the Latin word mensis which means month and the Greek word mene which means moon. In early societies, before industrialism and processed foods, all women ovulated and menstruated in sync with moon cycles. Modern living sees most women abusing their bodies with chemicals, antibiotics, prescription medications, the Pill, emotional stress, over-exercising, refined foods, and

more. This causes biological chaos with our menstrual cycles and disrupts our hormones. Random and uncomfortable periods result from a diet and lifestyle that disconnects us from the rhythm of nature. During early married life in Denmark, I tried to fall pregnant naturally, but was diagnosed as being infertile. Much to my amazement it was the practice of Reflexology that helped me fall pregnant. I carried my baby without any problems and Daniel was born in January 1979. Everything was fine but he had a massive birthmark covering most of his right lower arm. Medical practitioners said he’d need a skin graft once he was fully grown. I spoke to my Reflexologist who wasn’t able to help, but suggested I find a method of changing his lifestyle and ‘detoxifying’ him! This is what led me to polarity. In my search for a solution I came across my next life teacher. She taught me about moon phases and their relationship to female menstrual cycles and ovulation. Her teaching emphasised the different polarities of the waxing and waning moon as well as the Yin and Yang principles of expanding and contracting. This science recognised two different polarites of people: those conceived at new moon and those conceived at full moon. Interestingly, people conceived during a waxing moon require different food to those conceived during a waning moon. Foods have their own vibrational energy which can have a negative or positive effect on an individual depending on their particular polarity. Daniel, being conceived during the full moon phase has to eat foods with ‘expanding’ or plus polarities for his body to stay balanced. After feeding Daniel with these foods, in a period of 6-7 months his birthmark disappeared and his skin tissues changed to normal. In terms of my life, when I started living according to the principles of polarity I had regular menstrual cycles that were always in sync with the moon phases, and continued until my natural menopause. My polarity is opposite Daniel’s and I need to concentrate on foods with ‘contracting’ or minus polarities.

The human body is influenced by the moon Our human cells, and those of plants and animals all have negative and positive charges. Essentially the human body is a collection of living batteries with our muscles and nerve cells triggered by electrical impulses. Think of how we use an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure heart activity and an electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure brain activity. Our cells are also immersed in fluid. Our bodies are made up of 70% fluid, similar to that of the earth. Just as the moon’s gravitational pull on the earth creates the rise and fall of tides, our cellular fluids and polarity system is affected in the same way.

The polarity theory The body has two inbuilt polarity systems controlling the electrical systems that enable humans to produce energy. The first is the brain polarity (connected to the nervous system), and the second is the heart polarity, (connected to the circulatory www.wellnesswarehouse.com

31

integrative health

system). If conceived during the new moon phase your brain polarity will be positive (+). During the full moon phase it will be negative (-). This polarity stays the same throughout your life. If your brain polarity is positive it means your heart and circulatory system will be the opposite, it will be negative. For the body to function and stay alive there has to be a balance between plus and minus polarities. If we are aware of the polarities we can choose a lifestyle that regulates this balance. Firstly we can look at our nourishment intake. The polarity of our blood changes according to the amount of nourishment it gets. It also changes according to the food we eat. Every food has a specific polarity and one can match the polarity of the food to your own individual polarity. The body has been created with an inbuilt healing force. Rather than dying when it’s out of balance, it has the ability to ‘balance an imbalance’. This it does by producing congestion along the meridians (energy pathways along the body). These are warning signs that our system is out of balance. Continued congestion ultimately leads towards diminished energy and chronic disease. Our lifestyle choices affect the chemistry of the body and the pH levels of the tissue fluid in the body. During a moon phase (especially the full moon), electromagnetic energies become stronger and congestions (illness, pains)

along the meridians become more pronounced from the gravitational pull

How to eat in accordance with your polarity Plus polarity people should avoid expanding polarity food – which as a general rule contain larger quantities of liquids like most fruits. Minus polarity persons should avoid contracting polarity foods which as a general rule are ‘denser’ like most proteins. Herbal teas have a strong medicinal polarity and the plus polarity will do well using: honey bush tea, fennel, dandelion and sage, whereas the minus polarity person must use: chamomile, rooibos, peppermint and nettle. Daniel was drinking two bottles of nettle teas daily, which I believe played a huge role in balancing his polarity system and healing his birthmark. For him, breakfast was vegetables, lunch was grains with the right polarities e.g. barley and rye, and supper was vegetables again.

external magnetic influences and how keep your meridians from being blocked, as well as other aspects of how the moon affects general health. The courses will also introduce how to use a pendulum to find your in-built polarity and your current balance.

did you know? Moon charts were commonly used to chart female menstrual periods. Early calenders were based on moon cycles but with the shift from Pagan beliefs to Christian beliefs, our lunar calender shifted to a solar calender. The lunar calender had 13 months, each month had 28 days, in total 364 days. The solar calendar has 12 months of either 28, 29, 30 or 31 days depending on which month you’re in.

Inge Dougans will be running short courses on the Moon Phases in Cape Town and Johannesburg. If you would like to attend, kindly email info@reflexologycourse.co.za or check www.reflexologycourse.co.za for more information. The courses look at congestion along the meridians, what this means, why pain is more pronounced around moon phases and seasonal changes, how to protect yourself against

I

f ‘anything’s possible’ like many of the self-development gurus say then there must be a way of putting that into action. We rounded up some wisdom and found pertinent action points to unleash the possibilities you want. Follow these steps and see how effectively you can create your reality.

Define what you know Knowing exactly what you want is the most important step. Define it, see it and double check to see if it truly stands its ground. Be careful of thinking too much about what you don’t want, that’s not going to be useful to you at all. The subconscious works with imagery and isn’t that concerned with ‘do’s or don’t’. Whatever picture you have in your head is what you’ll attract. Good clear pictures of what you want sends energy out to recruit what’s in your head. You will meet people and put yourself in circumstances that bring your focus towards you.

Check your motives See that what you want is going to be beneficial to you. If your desires involve revenge, resentment, anger or if your wants are about proving a point to someone else you may need to review your motives. Healthy desires filled with goodness and excitement will work the best. Make sure you are saturated in excitement about what you want, and amplify that excitement daily.

Acknowledge your progress Notice when you’ve made headway. Lots of Little baby steps make up a giant leap. Give yourself encouragement and positive feedback with the steps you take. Constantly renew your excitement.

HOW TO MANIFEST WHAT YOU WANT 1. Expect it to happen – own it and live like it’s already happened and part of your reality. 2. Be excited about it. This generates magnetic energy that acts as an antenna to attract your desire. See the exercise below to make this point more effective. 3. Feed your intention daily. Fire it up with excitement and faith. 4. Draw a metaphysical bridge between your imagination and reality 5. Let go of any stress around the process of receiving or manifesting and simply allow the outcome to come to you.

Change Your Strategy If Necessary If what you are doing isn’t working have the courage to change. Just because you’ve put huge effort into going a certain direction, if it’s not the right direction all that energy will be wasted. Be realistic and assess your efforts with truth.

Realise There’s A Journey To Travel Be real about the journey to get there. Do what it takes and be consistent. If something is really worthwhile to you, you’ll go the distance in getting there. See that you resolve all your fears and hesitations. If you don’t find yourself doing what it takes then you might not really want what you say you do.

How to add energy to your intention through your thoughts

Hold the thought ‘I am happy’ in your mind. Keep that thought for a few seconds. Notice how you feel when you hold this thought. Now hold that same thought but this time, do it with more energy. Do whatever you think is necessary to make the ‘I am happy’ thought more intense in your mind — smile, breathe in deeply, change your position, stand up, lengthen your posture, move around, etc. Hold the thought at that new energy level for a few more seconds. Notice the difference in how this thought feels compared to the first thought. You will feel the increased energy even though the thought is still the same. Now lower the intensity, and bring the energy of the ‘I am happy’ thought back down. Strip the thought of all its energy, and reduce it in your mind to simple words. It becomes nothing but a boring sentence. Hold the thought like that for a few more seconds. Now you have experienced the difference it makes when you add energy to a thought. Your breathing, physiology, and movement changes when it reflects the energy of the thought you’re holding. If you watch someone do this exercise you will see the change in their body when they amp up the energy. It isn’t difficult to gauge the intensity of someone’s thought energy by observing their physiology. You can do this exercise when thinking about any of your goals or desires.

did you know? A temporary commitment is much easier to keep than a permanent one. Name a new habit you want to form and commit to sticking with it for just 30 days, you’ll be much more likely to crack it.

Self-development writer Steve Pavlina suggests using this exercise to help you learn how to add energy to your thoughts and give them more magnetic attraction. In other words, to make your thoughts and intentions work more effectively for you.

Pharmacy FAQ

What can I do about pain after exercise? Inflammation can happen naturally after strenuous exercise. Signs of inflammation include redness, warmth and swelling. Inflammation is the result of an injury of some kind and, when it occurs, chemicals from the body’s white blood cells are released to protect your body from harmful foreign substances. An anti-inflammatory is a good way to ease the pain caused by inflammation after exercise. Capsules (like Mypaid) and patches (like TransAct) are effective. Certain supplements can also be useful. Amino acids like glutamine help repair muscle tissue. Staying hydrated with a product like NUUN can help by preventing your muscles from dehydrating during exercise. ong time anxiety sufferer Carol Smith* explains how anxiety made her life unbearable and after being on every type of prescription pill imaginable, she found relief from a mixture of several aromatherapy oils. “I had a very difficult childhood that left me with debilitating anxiety, sometimes I used to vomit for hours from being anxious, other times I wouldn’t sleep for nights on end. At times I even thought I was going to die.” Carol never dreamt that something as seemingly innocuous as aromatherapy oils would bring her the most amount of healing and relief. Yet, in many cases research shows results parallel to the effect of prescription drugs. Aromatherapy oils are powerful and, used correctly, have no detrimental side effects. Carol found Lavender Wild Orange, Vanilla, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang to be most effective for her. Bear in mind though, that it also depends on which fragrance you find most pleasing. Try out the 3 below or find your own unique formula.

Lavender Lavender has a profoundly relaxing effect. You can add lavender to your body cream, deodorant, perfume and pillow. A study conducted by H. Woelk and S. Schläfke, showed that food grade lavender taken orally over a 6 week period had results comparable to the popular anti-anxiety drug Lorazepam. This was a multi-centre, double-blind, randomised study of the Lavender oil preparation Silexan in comparison to Lorazepam for generalized anxiety disorder. (published in Phytomedicine, Vol. 17, no. 2 in 2010). Another study conducted by the University of Clinical Neurology in Vienna showed that ambient odours of orange and lavender reduced anxiety and improved mood in patients waiting for dental treatment. They used this study to support the opinion that fragrance can alter emotional states and reduce anxiety.

and it will help you sleep. Add it to a carrier oil and use it on your body. Bergamot also treats headaches.

TRY THIS: DEEP CALM: Mix Rosewood, Moroccan Chamomile and Frankincense in equal parts. This woody smell will bring on a calm and serene disposition. Moroccan Chamomile is said to be anti-inflammatory with antihistamine qualities. Frankincense has anti-depressive and antianxiety properties. An international team of scientists, including researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, describe how burning frankincense activates poorly understood ion channels in the brain to alleviate anxiety or depression. READY TO REST: Mix 3 parts of lavender, 1 of sweet marjoram, 3 ylang ylang, 2 sandalwood and 1 vanilla. All of these oils bring about a sense of calm and are good to bring on sleep. Ylang ylang has a sedative effect on the autonomic nervous system. C

CAUTION: Be aware that essential oils are highly M concentrated and should not be used directly Y on the skin. It’s almost always advisable to use a CM carrier oil like almond or jojoba on application. If you need to ingest any of the oils, make sure they are MY food grade standard. CY

Our olfactory receptors communicate with the parts of the brain that store memories and emotions. Researchers believe smell directly influences physical, emotional and mental health. Further research is being done on the effect of molecules from essential oils on the blood, hormones and enzymes.

Wild Orange

Live with more fragrance

Wild orange is a distinct mood booster that brings a sense of happiness and well-being. Get the food grade variety and you can add a drop to your herb tea or salad dressing. It’s a great oil to have around the house.

Generally most people don’t take advantage of their sense of smell. Being surrounded by beautiful smells can enhance your mood considerably and make you more positive about life. There are many ways to bring fragrance into your life. Use a burner, add them to your bath, on your clothing, your pillows, put them in your face creams or household cleaning products, drop some in your car.

Bergamot Besides dissipating tension and stress, Bergamot is also great for the skin. It has a note of citrus in its scent and helps boost mood. Drop Bergamot in the bath at night *name has been changed.

RED HOT HEALTH T

here’s a huge worldwide community of chilli aficionados, there’s even an International Chilli Festival and chilli-heads that meet regularly to discuss the heat factor, recipes and growing techniques. Apparently the endorphins chillies provide are somewhat addictive. That, and the health benefits are just some of the reasons to grow your own.

GROW YOUR OWN Create a point of interest in your garden by planting a few different types of chilli plants. Harvest them and make your favourite recipe for chilli sauce. You can make it in bulk and give it away to friends and family. Besides relishes and sauces

did you know? Chilies are an excellent source of Vitamin, A, B, C and E and minerals like manganese, folate, potassium, thiamin, and copper. They have seven times more vitamin C than oranges. Chilies help destroy free radicals and have multiple health benefits.

there are all sorts of chili recipes you can try from chilli jam to chili chocolate. You can also make a healing balm and cold remedy. Chillies are highly satisfying to grow, they only take a few weeks to develop and yield a plentiful amount of colourful green and red fruit. They start off green and take a few weeks to change to red, but you can harvest them when they are green or red. If you don’t pick them they’ll start to shrivel but you can still use them like that. They just get hotter in flavour the longer you leave them. Leaving lots of chillies on your plant will stop further yields of chili so if you want more to grow, then pick them. Your chilli plant will grow with minimal care. Water it 2 to 3 times a week and make sure it’s well drained, if it’s not the roots will start to rot. Chillies work well in pots but you can also plant them out in the garden.

HEALTH BENEFITS: Traditionally, Indian medicine has used chillies extensively for centuries to ward off many different diseases. It’s no wonder when you consider the high level of antioxidants, vitamins and beta-carotenoids they have. They also help boost metabolism. Here are some of the health benefits attributed to chillies.

Detoxify: Chillies detoxify the body by removing waste products and increasing the supply of nutrients to the tissues. They also work on the gastrointestinal system helping digestion. 40

Pain killer: Chillies stimulate the release of endorphins that are natural pain killers. They relieve pain caused from shingles, bursitis, diabetic neuropathy and muscle spasm in shoulders and extremities. They’re also functional in relieving arthritic pain.

Antibiotic: Chillies bring fresh blood to infected sites where the blood is needed to help fight viruses.

Brain: Capsaicin stimulates pleasure endorphins in the brain and gives a feelgood sensation. Cancer: Studies show that vitamin C, beta-carotene and folic acid found in chili reduces the risk of colon cancer. Chillies like red pepper have cartonoid lycopene, which help prevent cancer. Researchers at Yale University School of Medicine have devised a candy, composed of hot chili peppers and toffee to ease mouth pain in cancer patients undergoing Chemotherapy. Heart Attack:

Chillies have vitamin B6 and folic acid. Vitamin B reduces high homocysteine levels known to cause blood vessel damage and associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. It also converts homocysteine into molecules beneficial in lowering cholesterol levels. Capsicum (the heat component in chilies) helps the arteries, veins and capillaries to regain their elasticity.

HOW TO MAKE COMPOST LIST OF COMPOSTABLES

WHAT IS COMPOST?

Composting is a brilliant way to give back to the earth. If you consider the huge volume of landfills in the world it should be a primary concern for all of us to dispose of our waste responsibility. Week after week we mindlessly put our rubbish bags on the pavement when we could so easily reduce the amount of waste to almost nothing. Here’s what you can compost, and a few pointers on how easy it can be.

Compost is organic matter that’s broken down into material used as plant fertiliser. It’s also called Gardener’s Gold or Black Gold. When you put a whole lot of organic matter together it attracts bacteria that create carbon dioxide and heat. This transforms waste into nutrient rich soil. Creepies and crawlies like worms, slugs and insects also digest the decomposing matter, turning it into compost as they eat and poop it out. Secretions from the worms and insects bind the small particles into bigger bits. This improves the texture of the compost.

• Cardboard, newspaper & clean paper • Coffee grounds • Crumbs, eggshells and nutshells • Cotton and wool rags • Dryer and vacuum lint • Flowers, leaves, plants & pine needles • Fruits and vegetables

HOW TO

3. Add some nitrogen. Hay and kitchen scraps are good sources of nitrogen and manure is the best. If you layer your nitrogen source with your leaves and garden waste you will get a great result. 4. Turn your compost every three days to give it more air.

ECO CROCK Use this attractive compost bin on your countertop to throw your leftover food scraps ready for composting.

1. You can compost on the open ground or you can compost in a big plastic, wooden or metal bin or container. If you’re doing it on the open ground, find an empty piece of ground in your garden. This will give access to the organisms so they can start their job.

• Hair and fur • Sawdust and wood chips • Tea bags • Grass and trimmings • Hay and straw

42

2. Start throwing all your organic waste onto the pile. Make sure you have a good mixture of old food and leaves. If you shred your leaves you will get a much faster result. This will aerate the pile and allow for quicker decomposition. helping you live life well

Unhurried &

If you are longing to be undisturbed, uncluttered and unplugged, Arniston is the place to go. This tiny seaside village has not a shopping centre in sight, but rather a long stretch of warm water Indian ocean coastline lazily waiting to be explored.

F

rom Cape Town you head to Caledon and turn right, driving through the Overberg you pass Bredasdorp and Napier and you’ll reach a tiny fishing village right near Cape Agulhas, the southern most tip of Africa. Just over two hours is all it takes.

44

Although it’s a popular getaway it’s distinctly uncommercial - Time magazine described it as one of ‘The World’s Best Hideaways’ and yes, it’s a place you can easily feel anonymous, unhurried and off the hook. We stayed at the Arniston Spa Hotel right on the beach. It has the authorative air of having

been there for decades and the privilege of not having to try too hard as the skyline and expansive views do most of the work. My hotel room was huge and refreshingly spacious with sliding doors to a balcony overlooking the beach, if you want to switch

did you know? Arniston is named after the British ship of the same name, shipwrecked on the jagged coastline in 1815. Only 6 out of the 378 passengers survived. Most of them were wounded soldiers on their way back to Britain from Ceylon.

For the Spa junkie you can head to the Ginkgo Spa for any kind of massage or treatment you might desire. It’s a sanctuary that promises to leave you totally relaxed and rejuvenated. If you want to fast track your relaxation experience take advantage of the Rasul – a steam chamber modeled on Turkish tradition. Activities include fishing from the shore or deep water options; mountain biking – you can hire bikes from the hotel and head off on an off-road track. There’s kite flying, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, bird watching, whale watching (May to November) and horse riding. Arniston is blessed with warm, shallow waters and safe bathing with body boards to hire. For more information about The Arniston Spa Hotel and for booking enquiries log on to www.arnistonhotel.com.

on, everything is there – DSTV, wireless connection, bar fridge and luxuries like a towel warmer, huge bath and shower with Charlotte Rhys cosmetics. There’s a pool with deckchairs you can laze on and two restaurants to choose from. Adjacent to the hotel is the still operating traditional fishing village of Kassiesbaai. A cluster of whitewashed thatched houses, home to the fishing community are so quaint you can’t help wanting to photograph them. The fisher village is such a feature it’s been declared a South African National Monument. If there’s a catch on the go you can get fish straight from the boats, a small walk from the hotel. The highlight for me though is waiting for low tide to walk along the beach. Rock pools, caves, shipwrecks, raptor colonies and dunes hold endless appeal. Less than two kilometres away is the spectacular landmark Waenhuiskrans cave you can access at low tide. Longer walks will take you to Struis Point, Galjoengat and to the De Mond Nature Reserve. Plentiful sea life means a restaurant offering of the freshest fish and oysters from nearby shores. I ate delicious food from the restaurant where traditional South African cuisine is updated with innovations from renowned chefs. You can also order Pad Kos for picnics or the road home. Breakfast is a spread of traditional and healthy foods.

STRIKE A WARRIOR POSE T

here’s something about the warrior pose practiced in yoga that makes you feel fearless, limitless and full of resolve. If you want to put powerful energy into your day, spend a few minutes in warrior pose – you’ll be able to take on the world. Here’s a 4-part sequence you can practice any time of the day.

48 34

Each time you do it, you can improve it through subtle adjustments. Besides the psychological effects it strengthens your legs, your core and builds tenacity.

Here’s how: Before you begin, something you should know, is that yoga is all about the breath. Slow steady breathing is the most important

helping you live life well

consideration when doing this movement. Keep going back to your breath, make sure it’s not laboured and keep breathing. You can hold each pose for as long as you want, depending on how intense you want your experience to be.

1. MOUNTAIN POSE - Tadasana Start off in mountain pose. Stand in an easy balanced position, this is your neutral pose. Breathe until you feel centered. When you inhale roll your shoulders back a little and on exhale drop your shoulders down.

2. WARRIOR 1 - Virabhadrasana I From your standing position, step your left foot towards the back of your mat. Put your left heel on the floor with your toes in a 45 degree angle. Bend the right knee and sink your hips down. Press into your left leg and make it strong. Make your hips level (keep the left hip from peeling back). Adjust the length of your step if need be. If you feel unstable, widen your stance (put left foot more to the left and right foot more to the right). Use your inhale to sweep your arms up over your head into a slight backbend to open your heart. Gaze at your fingertips.

3. WARRIOR 2 - Virabhadrasana 2

C

M

When you are ready, shift to the side by releasing your arms until they’re parallel to the ground and shoulder height (the right arm should come forward and the left arm back). Open your hips to the side keeping your right knee deeply bent. You should be able to see your right toes on the inside of your right knee. Sink the hips a bit lower. The hips and body are sideways but the gaze is forward. Check your posture by looking at the back arm to see if it’s straight. Then check your hips and the alignment of your knee. Here is where you will feel powerful and victorious. Stay in this position for a few breaths.

4. WARRIOR III - Virabhadrasana III Pivot onto the ball of your left foot, square your hips, Bring the left foot in a step closer and launch onto your right foot. Your upper body and left leg will be parallel to the floor. Reach through your left heel and internally rotate your left thigh so your toes point toward the ground. Keep your arms straight by your sides or swing them forward in line with the torso. Hold this pose and breathe. When you are ready to release, drop the left foot next to your right and come back to your mountain pose. Breath here until you feel centered. Take a minute to notice the difference between your left and right side. Repeat everything on the other leg.

NOTES: See if you can complete 5 long breathes in each pose. Repeat the sequence a few times on each side.

did you know? Chewing your food properly can help keep tooth decay at bay; the saliva you produce whilst chewing generates enzymes that kill decay causing bacteria.

To restore the ratio of calcium and phosphorus in our blood, and to direct minerals back into our teeth we need to do two things: the first is to cut out sweets and processed foods; and the second is to include health building foods with potent amounts of minerals and vitamins. Bear in mind that even too many carrots, bananas, dates, honey, maple syrup, and other fruits can produce a change in blood sugar, which can contribute to minerals being pulled from our bones.

Getting It Right

W

e take it for granted that we’re going to get holes in our teeth, that we’re going to need fillings and probably false teeth when we’re older. But research shows cavities are completely avoidable. Apparently with the right nutrition, correct hygiene and natural toothpaste it’s possible to rebuild tooth enamel and heal oral problems. Here are some natural tooth care principles you can follow.

1. NUTRITION IS KEY Dr Weston Price, Chairman of the American Dental Association between 1914 and 1928, underwent an extensive global research programme that found substantial evidence linking diet to tooth decay. Why was it that indigenous cultures on a diet of natural unprocessed food had no cavities and little or no tooth decay? Price concluded that it’s modern western diets that include flour, sugar, and processed vegetable fats that cause nutritional deficiencies that lead to dental issues and health problems. Dentist Melvin Page carried on Price’s research and attributed tooth decay to blood chemistry that’s out of balance, primarily from eating processed food (especially sugars). When the ratio of calcium and phosphorus in the blood deviates from normal, minerals are pulled from the bones causing tooth decay and bone loss. So, contrary to popular belief, sugar causes tooth decay because it depletes nutrients in the body, not because bacteria are attracted to sugar and produce acid that breaks down enamel.

The right nutrition means fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K from whole food sources. These come from plant and animal foods raised in harmony with nature. If you are not vegetarian, grass-fed animal foods (raw milk, butter, cheese and cream), truly free range eggs, wild fish and shellfish (organ meat is an especially rich source). You can get fatsoluble vitamin E from unprocessed grains like wheat, rye, barley and oats. Unfortunately it’s nearly impossible to find grains with the whole vitamin intact. When these grains are processed, the vitamins oxidize and the grains become rancid. Even in organic varieties, processing still damages the essential nutrients. A ‘so called’ healthy diet with organic fruits and vegetables, grains, and organic fish and chicken may not have enough fat-soluble vitamins, and bio-available minerals. Despite what the labels may say, make sure you really are eating unprocessed whole food.

Salt Water This is probably the most common home remedy for any kind of tooth-related pain. Simply add one teaspoon of salt to warm water and rinse and gargle your mouth with it. Make sure you swish it around any cavities you have.

Vanilla Essence Vanilla essence in its pure form is known as an effective mouthwash that can also relieve toothache.

Tea Tree Tea tree oil is an amazing antibacterial agent and highly effective against all kinds of mouth problems including ulcers and sore throats. Add 4 drops to a quarter cup of water, swirl it around well, gargle and swish.

Buchu Water Buchu water leaves a lasting fresh after taste, it keeps your breath fresh for hours afterwards. You can drink it or simply rinse and gargle.

Wheatgrass Anti-bacterial properties in wheatgrass keep the growth of bacteria in check. It can also help alleviate toothache. Once you have juiced the grass, use the pulp as a poultice on a sore tooth.

Peppermint Oil For fresh breath, add a few drops of pure food grade peppermint oil to water and use it to rinse your mouth.

2. MOUTHWASH

Tea For Teeth

Swish your mouth out after every meal and you are sure to preserve your teeth. It might sound a bit nerdish, but carry a small bottle in your handbag or man bag for times when you’re eating out. If not, make sure you swish before bed. Bacteria are highly active at night, if you are too tired to brush, at least do a mouthwash. Here are some DIY mouthwashes you can make at home.

3. FLOSS & BRUSH

Calcimag Mix a tablespoon of calcium and magnesium powder into half a litre of water. It helps re-mineralize your teeth and will keep your mouth alkaline, stopping acid from breaking down tooth enamel.

www.wellnesswarehouse.com

If you don’t want to carry your mouthwash around, order green tea after a meal. Green tea is an effective way to kill germs, keep teeth healthy, reduce plaque and remove bacterial growth.

It’s more important to floss than to do anything else. Floss removes food particles that get stuck in your teeth and cause bacteria to flourish. In your tooth brushing routine be sure to replace your toothbrush at least once a month and to keep it clean. You can do that by dipping it in a solution of tea tree oil and water to remove germs and bacteria. Choice of toothpaste is key. Many countries

lookwell have banned fluoridation in water and if you read up on fluoride you may want to avoid it altogether. Choose a natural brand or make one up yourself. Here’s a good fluoride-free, natural DIY toothpaste.

DIY TOOTHPASTE Makes up a batch that lasts a week

INGREDIENTS 5 TABLESPOONS COCONUT OIL 5 TABLESPOONS BAKING SODA 15 DROPS ESSENTIAL OIL, CHOOSE FROM ONE’S LIKE PEPPERMINT, EUCALYPTUS, CINNAMON, CLOVE, LEMON, ORANGE, ROSEMARY ¼ TSP STEVIA (OPTIONAL)

Most of these oils are anti-oxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antiinflammatory. Clove is recognised by the Dental Association for use as a dental anesthetic. You could also use neem oil or tea tree oil, they won’t enhance the flavour but will tighten gum tissue.

TIPS Use sesame oil instead of coconut oil. Add trace minerals, calcium magnesium powder, bentonite clay, or diatomaceous earth instead of, or as well as, baking soda. All of these help with re-mineralization. Use Bentonite clay to draw out impurities. Use hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth. It should be used in small quantities though as it can irritate gums and shouldn’t be swallowed.

Tooth Whitener Activated charcoal can whiten teeth, help with gum disease and dispel internal toxins. Hospitals often use it when doing stomach pumps or for patients that have swallowed poison. It’s highly absorbent and picks up toxins that are passed through the body and expelled by the digestive system. Although it might make your teeth look like they’re turning black at first, don’t be alarmed they will end up sparkly white. Massage activated charcoal into your teeth and gum for a few minutes. Rinse it off very well.

52

4. OIL PULLING

7. SUPPLEMENT

Oil pulling is enjoying a health revival. It’s an ancient Indian folk remedy and involves swirling a tablespoon of oil around your mouth for up to 15 minutes then spitting it out. You can use ghee, coconut oil, sesame or even vegetable oil.

Dentist Dr David Tecosky suggests that if you don’t get enough vitamins from your diet, supplementing with the following:

It claims to whiten teeth, make your breath fresher and lead to huge improvements in oral health including strengthening gums. While swishing try and push the oil through your teeth so it gets to every part of your mouth.

5. GUM MASSAGE Stimulate blood flow in your gums and keep your teeth free from plaque. It’s a good idea to massage your gums and teeth; besides the benefits it helps you get an idea of what’s going on in your mouth as you will be able to feel any trouble spots with your fingers.

Mustard Massage Mix 2 spoons each of rock salt and mustard oil. Massage thoroughly onto your teeth. Leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes then gargle and rinse.

Lemon Chew Chew a slice of lemon to kill germs and ease pain from toothache. They’re a rich source of Vitamin C and will alkalinize the mouth.

Mustard Massage Either massage gum and teeth with clove oil or chew a clove after meals to keep clean and pain free.

6. CHEW

CoQ10 -
(coenzyme Q10), an antioxidant that helps maintain the soft tissues in your body - including gums. Calcium
- without enough calcium your teeth can loosen. Vitamin D - you need this to absorb calcium. Vitamin C - this is a building block for collagen, which helps keep your teeth attached to your gums. You can also take cod liver oil, it’s rich in Vitamins A, D and K, which are excellent for maintaining dental hygiene.

Bone Broth Bone broth made from a soup of boiled chicken, beef or lamb bones is a rich source of calcium and magnesium that helps with cavities and tooth decay. It also helps the digestive system and strengthens nail, hair and skin.

TOOTHACHE CLOVE OIL: Take a bit of clove oil on your forefinger and lightly massage the affected tooth. Clove oil helps relieve pain from cavities and tooth decay.

ALCOHOL

Gum Look for gum with xylitol. While xylitol is proven to be good for teeth, gum helps remove stubborn food particles and makes you produce saliva that helps keep the mouth clean and healthy.

Neem Stick Neem sticks have been used for centuries. Chewing a neem branch strengthens teeth and gums and the plant oils and compounds released in the mouth get rid of bacteria. The fibre content in neem helps keep plaque at bay.

MAKE MONEY A HABIT Most people feel more powerful when they have a positive bank balance. Getting there might just be a matter of developing good money habits. Here are 7 habits guaranteed to improve your financial situation. 1. PAY YOURSELF FIRST As soon as you get any money in, pay yourself first. Even if it’s only five percent, put it into a savings account. You will be surprised at how money works. If you have to pay yourself, you will, and you’ll find your savings grow in spite of perhaps using up all your money during the month. Even if

54

you are paying off debt, still add something to your savings. It also has a psychological effect that makes you feel positive about money. 2. TITHE There’s a universal law that supports giving. If you give away a certain amount of your income every month it enters you into a giving and receiving loop that pays you back tenfold. It’s not a mystical principal; the universe just works with interest. Make sure you’re giving to a supportive cause though. Some recommend giving away ten percent as a guideline.

helping you live life well

3. AVOID DEBT If you really examine your situation, there’s hardly ever a good reason to get into debt. If you are in debt, make it a firm habit to get out of it. Even if you pay an absolute minimal amount, do it every month.

4. SPEND ON PURPOSE Before you randomly purchase anything, see if you really want your item of desire. Many purchases lose their appeal once you have them. If you raise your consciousness you might notice that living a more simple life is more rewarding and doesn’t bog you down with clutter. See if you can repair, recycle or review before you buy.

6. USE CASH Using credit cards makes it very easy to get into debt and to use money you don’t have. Drawing cash against money you actually have will keep your finances in a better state. Make a firm rule of only spending money you have.

7. LEARN ABOUT FINANCE Even if it’s not your field of interest, read something financial once a week. You will feel very empowered knowing more about finance and if you do this once a week you will be surprised how quickly you become informed.

did you know? 5. KNOW WHAT YOU SPEND Many people spend without budgeting or knowing what they’re spending money on. A simple spreadsheet will show you where your money is going. If your grocery bill seems enormous see if you can bulk buy and share with friends to get a better deal. You may want to pay off your car from your bond or find ways to re-organise your finances.

It’s good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it’s good, too, to check up once in a while and make sure that you haven’t lost the things that money can’t buy - George Lorimer

Age isn’t as glamorous as it used to be and most people spend a lot of energy preserving their youth. Yes, ageing can be slowed down; we just need to know how.

HOLDING IT TOGETHER C

ollagen is well known as a factor in staying youthful, especially when it comes to skin. But what exactly is collagen and how do we preserve it? Here are some of the facts and finer details alongside tips for preserving your youth. Collagen is found all over the body. We have more than 25 different types of naturally occurring collagens in the body. They make up about 25 percent of our total proteins. It’s a fibrous protein that’s full of amino acids and, together with elastin and keratin, has the strength and

56 56

flexibility to hold our tissues and organs together. That means skin, bone, tendons, muscles, cartilage and internal organs. Collagen also facilitates the body’s expansion and growth and is involved in repair when cells are damaged. It’s a good idea to keep collagen production in the body at an optimum level - it’s what makes the skin look young. Getting older depletes the elasticity of the collagen and slows cell production. That’s what results in wrinkles and is why collagen is important in the quest for rejuvenating and revitalizing skin cells.

helping you live life well

8 WAYS TO BOOST COLLAGEN PRODUCTION 1. Eat food with Vitamin C – berries, lemon, kiwi, strawberries, oranges, guava, brussel sprouts, and red and green peppers are good sources. These foods help turn proline and lysine into collagen. 2. Include lean protein in your diet – choose additions like fish, chicken, cottage cheese, egg white, beans, chia seeds and quinoa.

3. Drink green tea – it has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can restore collagen.

INGREDIENTS 1 RIPE AVOCADO 1 RIPE KIWI

4. Add garlic to your meals – garlic has tuarine, lipoid acid and amino acids with sulphur known to slow down collagen damage. 5. Get your phytonutrients – berries, parsley, watercress, bee pollen, carrots, apricots, plums, grapes, sprouts and shoots all contain phytonutrients. These strengthen collagen fibres and help skin look firmer and healthier. 6. Stay hydrated – everything the body does benefits when you drink enough water. 7. Protect yourself from the sun – both UVA and UVB rays. 8. Look for face creams with extracts of green tea and research good quality supplements and creams with collagen boosting effects.

Take a tablespoon of mashed avocado pulp and use a fork to mash it into the pulp of a full kiwi fruit. Keep mashing until you have a smooth paste. Make sure your face is well cleansed and dried. Apply your fruit paste all over your face and neck. C

Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and then wash off with warm water. Do this weekly for noticeable results. M

Research shows that cinnamon increases the production of collagen on skin. It won’t be an overnight miracle but regular intake of cinnamon shows substantial improvement. You can also put cinnamon directly on the skin. Cosmetic formulations have used cinnamon in scrubs and facial creams for centuries.

COLLAGEN BOOSTING FACE MASK Make up a mask to boost your collagen. All you need is some avocado and kiwi fruit. Kiwi is rich in Vitamin C, which is a powerful and effective antioxidant.

did you know? Surgeons use collagen to make man-made skin substitutes where it’s used in cosmetic procedures and for treating and managing serious burns. Although creams and collagen injections can temporarily restore lost collagen there’s a lot you can do to support collagen production in your body.

Avocado is rich in monosaturated fats that improves skin tone, it’s a great moisturizer that helps reduce skin redness and heal damaged skin. It has Vitamin E and C, these are both necessary to create elastin and collagen to maintain elasticity and firmness.

Things you didn’t know about... Stay safe in the sun

Drink up

Being dehydrated seriously affects your performance as an athlete. And it can affect workouts, too. Studies show if you lose just 2.5% of your body weight in fluid, your capacity for high intensity performance can be reduced by as much as 45%. When you lose fluid, you also lose important electrolytes. It’s important to rehydrate often, but some drinks are better than others. Choose something with electrolytes like sodium and potassium in it.

Magnesium matters

Magnesium deficiency is common but often goes unnoticed. Serious signs of this “invisible deficiency” include exhaustion, a low appetite, muscle cramps and mild nausea. Dehydration, which is more common when you work out in summer, can contribute to magnesium deficiency. Eat more dark, leafy greens, nuts and seeds to up your magnesium levels. If you’d like to supplement, choose magnesium glycinate as it’s more effectively absorbed by the body than other forms of the mineral.

In the summer months we tend to spend more time outdoors in general, and that includes more exercise in the fresh air. South Africa has the second-highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia. Wearing sunscreen is very important when it comes to protecting your skin. Most sunscreens contain chemicals as active ingredients but there are natural options. Look out for zinc oxide next time you buy sunscreen. It’s a natural barrier against both UVA and UVB rays.

Relax!

It’s very common to get sore muscles after exercise. Known as ‘delayed onset muscle soreness’, (DOMS) often happens when you start a new exercise programme or change your workout routine. It’s a sign your body is adapting to the exercise you’ve done, and just one bout can reduce the chance of you experiencing soreness from the same exercise for weeks – or months. There’s no cure for DOMS but soaking in a hot bath, especially one with mineral bath salts, can help.
