magazine helping you live life well

GREEN SUMMER We’ve chosen a green start to summer: green in our food, green in our cosmetics, green supplements and green initiatives. We’re all set to make October a completely uplifting time filled with tips and treats to set you up for a memorable month. There are so many different types of superfoods with unusual, incredible and tantalizing flavours we’re ready to share. Dehydrating foods, making summer smoothies and creating sugar from apples is all in the mix. Right on trend is the alcohol-free rave that’s intent on getting high with uber healthy practices, dawning a new body with early morning yoga or chilling out and winding down with evening meditation and a Kombucha cocktail. On the healing front we’ve got Brandon Bays’ Journey and the healing power of horses as well as an effective practice known as EMDR. Knowing what hemp oil or medical marijuana can do might change your life and so will realizing the deep science of how our thoughts and feelings shape our destiny. In celebration of the skin, we feature the actives that make up a natural chemical free beauty routine. For tree lovers we invite you to participate in a planting challenge. Our real challenge though is to feel the best you can and carry on the journey of ‘living life well’.

The revolutionary NEW ORIGINE 8™ complete green tea superfood extract For the first time, a revolutionary, eco-friendly, pure green tea extract of the highest potency provides 15 x greater absorption of all eight green tea catechins in a single capsule. Research shows the incredible health properties of green tea are due to polyphenols, also known as catechins, a potent type of disease-fighting flavonoid and antioxidant which detoxifies cell-damaging free radicals. Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) is the most biologically active polyphenol in green tea which studies have found has cancer chemoprevention properties. Origine 8™ contains the most potent antioxidants which are clinically proven to help slow down the ageing process and improve overall health. Produced from live green tea within six hours of harvest through a patented extraction process called Phytofare®, and further perfected by a world-first, clinically proven nutraceutical delivery system, Pheroid®, the bioavailability and stability of the extract is further boosted. Origine 8™ is designed to be more bioactive, have 15 x greater absorption and be more nutrient rich than any other green tea extract. A clinical study found that the catechins from a single dose of Origine 8™ stayed in the bloodstream for 24 hours compared to five hours in the case of regular green tea extract. Origine 8™ is now the benchmark in potent green tea supplementation for great overall health and vitality.

Health in a Box

Green and Lean

Ever look to your lunchbox to help you achieve your health goals? If you’re super organised and efficient but struggle to take all the meals and drinks you’ve prepared for yourself to the office without looking like you’re about to hike the Himalayas, The Box by Fitmark may just be your answer. An over-achieving food organizer, it includes everything down to the ice packs you’ll need to keep your food chilled, a custom bottle for your daily shake, and a nifty little organiser for your vitamins. No more picking up that junky convenience food on the run! The Box by Fitmark R799.99

GI Nutri-Lean’s green coffee bean extract contains chlorogenic acid, which is said to support weight management by maintaining normal blood sugar levels. Chlorogenic acid works by inhibiting an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate, which is responsible for storing sugar in the liver. Aside from helping with your sugar cravings, green coffee bean extract is also rich in antioxidants that can help to shield your cells against free radical damage. GI NutriLean Green Coffee Bean R169

Dehydrated Deliciousness You may think that owning a dehydrator is only for dedicated foodies and purist health nuts, but the appliance is actually one of the easiest and most useful you can have in your kitchen. A dehydrator simply uses low temperatures and a fan to dry food, essentially removing the water but keeping the enzymes of the raw food intact. Dehydrated fruit and vegetables make for simple, healthy and flavourful snacks. We use the EZIDRI Snackmaker to make our own dried fruit and veggie crisps. EZIDRI Snackmaker R2740

Treat Tea In Mexico, cocoa is still drunk with cinnamon, vanilla and a dash of chili. Yogi Tea’s Choco Chili tea combines these ancient ingredients with the traditional warming chai spices of ginger, pepper and cardamom to create a deliciously fragrant drink. Wild-Harvested Hair Care In Bloom While most of us love the sweet smell of rose, rose essential oil also offers a host of therapeutic benefits. This sensual blend from Aromatic Apothecary includes ylang ylang, and a few drops in a burner can sweeten the mood of any space. Aromatic Apothecary Rose Oil R110

FROM THE FAMILY

MASTER CLEANSE CHALLENGE

DID YOU KNOW?

Spring is the perfect time to detox. After hearing that co-founder of Wellness Warehouse, Carlos Gomes and his wife Gia had both just finished 10 days doing a detox regime known as the Master Cleanse, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to get first hand feedback about the challenges, benefits and experiences of this seemingly extreme cleansing experience.

The Master Cleanse is a detoxifying regime consisting of an average of 10 days consuming nothing but a drink of freshly squeezed organic lemon juice, organic Cayenne pepper and Organic Grade B Maple Syrup. Besides many other benefits, it gives the digestive system a break so the body can focus energy on repairing and cleansing.

What made you decide to go on the fast? “I wasn’t feeling 100% vibrant and healthy. During winter I had a few bouts of flu and colds, I felt bloated, a bit overweight and a general sense of being unwell”, explained Carlos. “Gia decided to join me and I was grateful about that. It’s so much easier to do when someone is going through it with you.” Carlos had done the cleanse a few times before and knew he wanted to do it just before summer started. “September is also my birthday month and birthdays always act as a kind of marker or milestone for me. It’s a perfect time, there’s the excitement of spring and a feeling of wanting to celebrate new beginnings. During winter, the body tends to accumulate mucus and phlegm, and when it’s over I often feel the desire for a cleanse.” What was the most challenging aspect of being on the Master Cleanse? “For me, the decision to start is the hardest part. Most of our social lives revolve around food and abstention is rather anti-social. It took me a while to clear my calendar and find a stretch of time without important social engagements. I must admit that I was rather grumpy on the first day. I wasn’t properly organized and ended up eating a small box of popcorn and two naartjies so it turned into a preparation day.” “Every evening you drink a cup of Senna tea and every morning a litre of Himalayan salt water to flush out your body. If you aren’t an early riser, I’d recommend waking up at least an hour earlier so you have time for your body to empty. You don’t feel hungry at all but you miss the ritual of food, the texture, the smells, the preparation and the distraction it brings. While on a business trip to Johannesburg, as fate would have it, I was upgraded to a better hotel, which happened to have an overly generous mini-bar and a phenomenal spread of snacks.” Gia’s challenge was having to cook for the family and not being able to eat the food. “I’m very active and feeling like I needed to conserve energy meant missing out my daily run.”

14

helping you live life well

Did it give you the results you wanted? Gia said after the fast she felt much lighter and her skin had a noticeable glow. “I haven’t had salt or sugar cravings since the fast and it helped me start again on raw and vegetarian food. Even though I found it difficult to focus, especially on the last few days when it felt like my head was in the clouds, overall it was a good experience for me.” Besides the physical benefits – did you experience any mental or spiritual benefits? “I’d say the mental benefits are the most profound. When you practice such a high level of discipline you get to really understand that you can do so much more than we usually task ourselves with. If you can manage to conquer your physical and tactile impulses, you can be disciplined on many other levels. It’s almost like a power surge you get when you don’t give in to your impulses”, said Carlos. “Fasting also gives you so much extra time – no eating, clearing dishes, shopping, you don’t realize how much time all this takes until you don’t have to do it. The time you gain gives you so much perspective - you get a totally new perspective on food and your relationship with it. It really is the most amazing experience. It allows you to be a more wholesome person afterwards and teaches you a lot about your own personal power.” Gia felt she was a lot calmer and dealt with daily challenges a lot better than usual. Would you do it again? Both Gia and Carlos agree they would like to make it an annual ritual and schedule it at the beginning of summer every year. Do you have any advice to individuals wanting to try it out? • “It is not as scary as it sounds”, says Gia. “The drink is nutritious so you feel satisfied for most of the day. I’d recommend experimenting with different herbal teas for taste variety; you are allowed tea like Rooibos and Peppermint teas as long as you don’t add anything to them.

I’d also suggest reading up more about the Master Cleanse as it’s important to follow the programme when you finish your 10 days. You can’t just head for the nearest hamburger. You need to spend at least 2 days on freshly squeezed orange juice and vegetable broth afterwards.” Carlos recommends doing it with someone, “it’s often easier to let ourselves down than to let someone else down, so having a detox buddy is an added motivation.” “Keep your normal routine, and don’t book yourself off from work as you need the busyness to keep yourself distracted. Expect high levels of energy; one evening I went to sleep at 9h30pm and woke up at 2h30am full of energy and ready for the day. Don’t make your mixture in big batches; keep it fresh. Make it into a ritual. Be absolutely resolute about using organic high quality ingredients. Use Himalayan salt for the flush, organic lemons and organic Cayenne pepper and organic Grade B Maple Syrup. If you are struggling with not having variety mix your concentrate with sparkling water, try for oxygenated rather than carbonated water. Don’t refrain from smelling food, enjoy it, you will notice how heightened your sense of smell becomes. Don’t do any strenuous work-out’s but gentle walking or moderate exercise is fine.

Your conclusion? I think a fast or detox is a great idea for anyone – it doesn’t have to be as disciplined as the Master Cleanse. I like it because of the simplicity and it’s worked for me before. I am 100 percent convinced a period of abstinence is the most healing process for your body. A combination of detoxing, cleansing and fasting has amazing results. Obviously, if you have any health conditions, diabetes or heart complications you may need to check with a health practitioner beforehand.

CIPLA NUTRITION WE SPEAK TO CIPLA NUTRITION AMBASSADOR MONIQUE LOPES Twenty two year old Monique Lopes has the incredible accolade of being a Karate world champion five times over. She also holds countless bikini fitness titles and runs her own business inspiring others to be fit and encouraging a lifestyle of healthy eating.

“I feel so lucky to be sponsored by Cipla. I had never been interested in supplements before but my friends were getting great results from Cipla products. When I learnt it was a pharmaceutical company, I was more interested in trying it out and now I’m sold on them.”

“I’ve always been a Tom Boy,” says Monique. “Everything we did as a family was sporty and my early life was full of activity.”

I LOVE HEALTHY FOOD ESPECIALLY SALAD – I’M SURE I WAS A RABBIT IN MY PAST LIFE!

At age 6 Monique started karate and did it for 13 years, she only stopped when she went to Pretoria University to study Human Movement Science.

MONIQUE LOPES

“I am the overachiever in everything I do,” says Monique who believes it is part of her personality to strive for perfection. Monique has a phenomenal social media following of people she inspires with specific body goals and fitness challenges. “I started competing in fitness competitions and posting about the experience. I took ‘selfies’ to help other people and then realized how many people needed help. I had this random idea to start a challenge and give a prize. It snowballed and got such a good response. Now I do regular challenges for my followers.” My boyfriend Adrian encouraged me so much, that’s what really got me going. I do online training as I love empowering people. I like to know they’re going to be equipped to do everything themselves rather than being dependent on me.”

Monique usually does cardio training in the morning and weight training in the evening. Three or four times a week she does a type of training called Switch. “When I take all my supplements it makes me feel more motivated and more professional because its part of a programme. Of course when life becomes crazy and you are on the go, then highpower smoothies are so convenient.” “I believe strongly in eating the right foods, luckily I don’t have a problem with what to eat, I love healthy food especially salad – I’m sure I was a rabbit in my past life!”

WE ASKED MONIQUE HER TOP TIP FOR PEOPLE WITH HEALTH, WEIGHT AND FITNESS GOALS. “Once you make a decision to start, never ever stop. Turn it into a habit. Remember that nothing can stop you from reaching your goals. It’s all about getting your mind around it and being prepared. Find someone who inspires you and then rather than trying to be like someone else, be the best version of yourself.”

16

helping you live life well

Monique admits that if she has to cheat, she would opt for pizza or sushi. “We never really had junk food in the house, which was lucky for me. I am Portuguese and I eat a lot. During off season I am a little bit more relaxed and will often have something my mom bakes. “One of my favourite things is the Cipla Nutrition ‘Cookies and Cream’ whey powder. It tastes too good to be true, you can either put it in a shake, or a smoothie but sometimes at home in the evening I add a bit of water and mix it into a mousse, I call it my contraption. For me, it’s a delicious pudding.” Monique’s favourite training partner is her Mom, she’s her rock, her best friend and her everything. Her Mom was her guinea pig – her first training client. When everyone saw the huge transformation Mom made, so many people were inspired to follow. Instagram: @monique.fit Facebook Page: MoniqueFit CIPLA NUTRITION OUR HERITAGE Cipla Nutrition is a quality sports nutrition brand owned by South Africa’s third largest pharmaceutical company, Cipla Medpro. BULLETIN

ELECTRO MUSCLE STIMULATION BEING HOOKED UP TO MUSCLE STIMULATING ELECTRODES IN AN OUTFIT THAT LOOKS LIKE YOU’RE OFF ON A TRIP TO MARS FEELS SOMEWHAT OVERWHELMING AT FIRST. WELL, FOR ME IT DID. BEING A ‘HIKE IN THE MOUNTAINS, YOGI’ KIND OF GAL, I’D NEVER THOUGHT OF GOING TO ANY FORM OF GYM, LET ALONE BE WIRED UP TO A MACHINE BUT HERE I WAS AT BODY20 IN CLAREMONT, CAPE TOWN READY TO TRY IT OUT. The studio uses equipment from Miha Bodytec, which incidentally is one of the fastest growing fitness devices globally. It was designed in Germany, and is used internationally for top athletes, trainers, professional sports people as well as for people with injuries, people semi-immobile and elderly people who find it difficult to exercise normally. Before we started I was given an amazing accurate assessment of my weight, my body fat ratio, muscle ratio, metabolic ratio and information on whether my levels were normal high or low. They use a highly sophisticated measuring device that scans your body to get the results. You are given your very own trainer who works with you on a one-on-one basis. Tenille took me for my first session. She was attentive and wonderful, and explained some of the objectives I might want to achieve according to my information scan.

After putting on the leg and arm straps as well as a waist jacket, with electrodes strategically placed to reach all the muscle groups Tenille started with low pulses to get me accustomed to how it feels. It’s quite a strange sensation at first as your muscles move without you doing anything. You can have it as low or high as you want and as you get used to it, you can turn it up. You can choose whether you want a cardio or muscle building programme, or if you’d like you can do a bit of both. The sessions are 20 minutes long and one session is apparently equivalent to 5 conventional weight training sessions. Once you get going you feel an impulse in your muscles and then for a few seconds there’s a break in between. Each time the pulse begins you are instructed to do a few rounds of easy exercises like a squat or arm pull depending on which muscles are being activated.

sending electrical impulses to contract the deep muscle fibres. In one 20 minute training session, your body gets over 150 times more muscle contractions than a conventional workout. I can totally understand how people get hooked on it; it really targets the areas you want and offers amazing results. It’s also really useful if you don’t have much time or if you have an injury and want to exercise muscles without the damaging effect of movement. The next day I was really stiff and had a great sense of accomplishment. Many of the clients at Body20 report amazing results with reduced cellulite, vastly increased strength, fitness, toning and sculpting. The best feature is that you can target areas that have been difficult to shape. I figured that a once a week session combined with mountain hiking and some yoga is a great balance that brings a really noticeable outcome.

KOMBUCHA

COCKTAILS by Kirsten Alexander

ALCOHOL-FREE IS THE NEW RAGE! HERE YOU’LL FIND 5 KOMBUCHA COCKTAILS THAT’LL MAKE YOU HIGH ON HEALTH AND SATISFY YOUR WILD SIDE. Driven by millennials the world over, a popular social trend is to ditch the hooch and take part in sober activities. According to recent research, millennials and the young-at-heart think booze makes interactions less meaningful and hangovers get in the way of their goals. Since mindfulness is now all the rage, many people are taking to yoga and meditation for stress relief instead of binge-drinking. To truly rebel in society today means embracing sobriety and working toward self-actualisation. SOBER TRENDS For a number of years January has commonly been seen as the month for abstaining from alcohol. Known as Dry January, the idea is to steer clear from consuming alcohol for 31 days. Experts agree that one of the major benefits associated with Dry January is simple: it makes people rethink their

relationship with alcohol. The concept of abstaining from drinking for an entire month has been wildly successful in the United Kingdom - the country’s first official Dry January campaign put on by the organization Alcohol Concern began in 2012 - and now the idea has gained traction around the world. The biggest benefit to a programme like this is it takes 21 days to change behaviour; and if drinking has been an issue for someone, they are taking the time to establish a new behaviour. This idea has extended to giving up alcohol altogether; or at the very least, being mindful of alcohol consumption and keeping it to a minimum. As the craft-beer trend has taken off in South Africa, along with it has come an increasing selection of non-alcoholic beers. In South Africa, the booze culture is slowly beginning to fall by the wayside, with a wide range of sober, mindful, after-work activities - making

happy hour a little more meaningful, and the morning after a lot happier. Not everyone is a drinker by any means, and this social shift is welcome news, indicating that we’re striving to deepen our tangible connections with others. KOMBUCHA COCKTAILS Being alcohol-free doesn’t mean you can’t have interesting party drinks. This fermented tea is brewed with good-foryou bacteria and yeast, so it’s teeming with probiotic microorganisms that get your body into gear by supplying it with energy and boosting the immune system. So, in the spirit of abstaining from spirits, here are five mouth-watering Kombucha cocktails to kick-start a booze-free party:

URBAN MOONSHINE Try this re-creation of a classic cocktail and enjoy the digestive benefits of both Kombucha and bitters. The dashes of bitters lend an aromatic, well-balanced flavour to the fresh citrus, resulting in a crisp cocktail. Serves one

INGREDIENTS

DID YOU KNOW? Nobody knows where the name Kombucha originated. The name popped up around 1991 and is similar to the Japanese Kombucha, which is a tea made of seaweed with a similar appearance. With unknown origins somewhere in Asia, its many names throughout the region roughly translate to ‘red tea fungus,’ ‘tea mould’ and the like.

ADVERTORIAL

GOATS’ MILK - adds nutrition HERE ARE SOME MORE GOOD REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER GOATS’ MILK TODAY:

1. Goats‘ milk has easily digestible fats and proteins Whilst the fat content of goats’ milk is similar to cows’ milk the fat globules are naturally 25-75% smaller in size and this may make it easier to digest4,5,6. Various studies, including a study published in Journal of Food Composition and Analysis, show that the protein composition of goats’ milk allows it to form a softer curd during digestion which may assist with your digestive health and comfort7.

2. Prebiotics

3. Lower in Lactose

Prebiotics can be seen as the food that helps stimulate the growth and maintenance of our beneficial gut bacteria8. Goats’ milk contains the highest amount of oligosaccharides among domestic animals9. These act as prebiotics in the gut and may help to maintain the health of the digestive tract by encouraging the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and preventing the growth of harmful bacteria10.

Goats‘ milk is not recommended for anyone who has been diagnosed with lactose intolerance. However, it typically contains slightly less lactose than cows’ milk11 and the amount of lactose people can tolerate varies12,13. This, together with the easier digestibility of goats’ milk, may help to explain why some people with lactose intolerance are able to enjoy goats’ milk without any repercussions. *References are available on request

As if these benefits were not enough, the KABRITA Instant Full Cream Goat Milk range has not been exposed to antibiotics, growth hormones or pesticides14.

DID YOU KNOW? All KABRITA goats’ milk is non-GMO (non-genetically modified organisms) according to European standards1 and sourced from farms which follow strict guidelines in terms of animal feed and treatment2. KABRITA’s unique, high-quality goats‘ milk has a mild, sweet and fresh taste3.

HOW TO MAKE

apple sugar

APPLE SUGAR IS DELICIOUSLY SWEET. IT HAS A POWDERY TEXTURE AND ALTHOUGH IT DOESN’T DISSOVLE IN TEA OR COFFEE YOU CAN SPRINKLE IT ON BREAKFAST OATS, MUESLI, DESSERTS OR YOGHURT AND IT WILL ADD A LOVELY SWEETNESS TO SMOOTHIES TOO. YOU WILL NEED A DEHYDRATOR TO DRY OUT THE APPLES.

Makes 2 cups

INGREDIENTS 15 APPLES (GREEN OR RED) WATER DEHYDRATOR

1. Wash apples well. If they’re not organic you may want to brush the skins to make sure any traces of pesticides or chemicals are removed. 2. Cut them into quarters and remove the cores. Keep the skins on. 3. Chop them into smaller slices ready for blending. 4. Start blending them a few at a time. You may want to add some water. You can use a Nutri bullet or any other blender. 5. Once they are evenly pureed, spread them very thinly on your dehydrator’s fruit leather sheets. Turn your dehydrator to 60°C. Make sure it dries thoroughly until it is crispy. This will probably take about 24 hours depending on how juicy they were to start with. 6. Once it is really crispy, remove it and let it cool. 7. Use a blender to grind the dehydrated puree into a powder. 8. Store this in an airtight container in the fridge.

THE INCREDIBLE

JOURNEY by Lara Potgieter

WHEN A FRIEND FIRST RECOMMENDED THE JOURNEY TO ME, I THANKED HER POLITELY BUT INTERNALLY SHRUGGED IT OFF AS YET ANOTHER NEW-AGE HEALING MODALITY THAT I REALLY DIDN’T HAVE THE TIME OR RESOURCES TO EXPLORE. I FELT AS IF I HAD DONE ENOUGH PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT TO LAST ME SEVERAL LIFETIMES, AND WASN’T IN THE MOOD FOR EXPLORING ANOTHER BRANCH OF THE FIELD.

DID YOU KNOW? Brandon Bays created The Journey after managing to find healing from a tumour without drugs or surgery. While hers was an exceptional case, over 200 000 people in 54 cities have improved various aspects of their lives using The Journey processes.

30

helping you live life well

Two days later, my Editor asked if I had been in touch with any Journey practitioners for our directory. She wasn’t aware of the conversation I had had about the work over the weekend, and I found it a cute co-incidence. The following weekend, while working at a holistic fair, I met the custodians of The Journey in South Africa, and they invited me to attend their upcoming Intensive Seminar and Abundance Retreat two weeks later. I had to start wondering whether there weren’t perhaps some larger forces at play. The Journey has been around since before I was born, and yet I had never heard of it until - within the space of a week - I was guided to the work no fewer than three times. I took the hint and packed my bags for the journey to The Journey. The seminar was held at Bodhi Khaya – an idyllic retreat at the foot of the Witkransberg in the Overberg. I was so taken by the natural splendour of the place that I almost didn’t care how the workshop itself would play out. While I had already started thinking of ways I could bunk sessions to walk the fynbos trail or meditate at the dam, I couldn’t have been more wrong in my assumption that I could get away with a half-assed commitment to the process. I tried to experience the introductory session as an ‘outsider’ – a journalist who didn’t have any of her own emotional work to do but who was going to observe – no doubt with a smidgen of condescension – how others sought to navigate theirs. As if sensing my smugness, the admittedly charismatic facilitator, Lydia, surprised me by asking me to be the live demonstration for the first process. I couldn’t really say no, so I joined her on the couch in front of the group, closed my eyes and surrendered to the sound of her voice. Let’s just say what followed could not have been very pretty. Lydia quickly and skillfully sent my critical egoic mind on a vacation and lifted the lid on a whole host of cellular memories that I hadn’t been brave enough to face for a very long time. As they say – the issues are in our tissues, and the body doesn’t lie. Although she guided me quite gently in, the emotions, people, places and beliefs came in fast and furious.

Even at the height of my vulnerability, I was surprised by just how compassionate Lydia really was. She helped me process down through the layers of each emotion as it arose, until I finally found myself in a space of sweet nothingness that I felt I could have inhabited forever.

THE JOURNEY IS A POWERFUL, STEP-BY-STEP MEANS TO FIND DIRECT ACCESS TO THE SOUL, THE INFINITE INTELLIGENCE THAT IS WITHIN US ALL.

This was followed by a powerful envisioned ‘emptying out’ and forgiveness process, a wonderfully comforting conversation with the peace that had made itself known in the space of nothingness beneath all the dramas, an exciting future integration and, finally, a heartfelt letter to self that appears to have written itself. When I did finally open my eyes, I didn’t even care that a hall full of strangers had just seen me spill my guts all over the floor. I had had a taste of freedom. The rest of the Intensive Seminar was infused with a sense of grace that made each process as powerful as the last. A slightly less intense but equally enlightening exercise was the Physical Journey. Contrary to popular expectation, this did not involve hiking the fynbos trail. Rather, we were guided to uncover emotions, memories and people that could have been presenting through discomforts in different parts of our bodies, and to observe how the physical being changed after its messages had finally truly been heard. Although my disbelieving mind reared its little know-itall head at various stages throughout the process, I heeded the facilitators’ advice to stay vulnerable to the process, and was duly rewarded by the wisdom of my body and – dare I say – soul. Although it was daunting to allow myself to access my most feared emotions, The Journey played a big part in teaching me to move fluidly through them without attaching to the story I had become accustomed to telling myself about each one.

31

health

While I thought I had cleared out all the cellular cobwebs by the end of the Intensive Seminar, the Abundance Retreat I stayed on to attend over the weekend took things to the next level by helping me to uncover the patterns and underlying beliefs I was playing out in all aspects of abundance – from manifesting and growing it to letting it go. The Abundance processes were similar to the Intensive exercises, except that they took things a step further by incorporating powerful belief elicitations and sweep-outs. It’s little wonder we all left Bodhi Khaya that Sunday feeling wholly hopeful and new. I suddenly couldn’t get enough of The Journey, and found myself at the beautiful Blue Bay Lodge in Saldanha for yet another Journey experience the following weekend. I’d never considered Saldanha much of a destination before, but Blue Bay Lodge really surprised me. Walking into the lobby area and seeing the seemingly endless expanse of ocean through the stretching glass doors was a treat in itself. The lodge was a fitting place to delve into the depths of the inner world, as everything about it was conducive to a sense of freedom in both time and space. Aptly titled Out of the Blue, this Journey weekend was for those of us struggling with what we had come to call depression.

32

helping you live life well

The overarching theme was similar to that of the last seminars in that we were continually reminded of the value of being true to and observing each emotion as it arose without judging or attaching to it (or berating ourselves for experiencing it in the first place). We examined the ways in which ‘depression’ makes everything seem personal, pervasive and permanent, and how it can arise from something as simple as a negative story attached to a recurring emotion, which in turn becomes a default mood and eventually a state of being. We delved into all the exacerbating factors – including unsupportive lifestyle habits, strategy overload, a lack of purpose and gaps in life expectations – and got real about the unhealthy coping mechanisms to which we had each resorted in response. The processes were similar to those on the Intensive and Abundance retreats, but the focus this time was very clearly on dropping the stories and surrendering to the raw emotions beneath them instead. The most powerful part of the seminar for me involved squarely facing all the stories I’d bought into over the years, as well as taking a very honest look at the secondary gains I had been enjoying as a result of being ‘depressed’. I found the belief change, NLP and reframe exercises of great value and left feeling newly empowered once again.

I haven’t even touched on Brandon Bays – the globally renowned founder of The Journey, because hers is a story that, while truly remarkable, is also widely accessible. What I really wanted to convey here was a deeply personal account of my own introduction to Brandon’s work, and the powerful impact it had on my life. Nothing I had read about The Journey before experiencing it for myself could have prepared me for what was to come. I couldn’t recommend attending a Journey seminar more highly. That is, if you’re ready to commit to a very deep and authentic form of liberation. I mention this as a disclaimer, because truth requires courage. As Brandon asserts, “The peace you seek is at the centre of your most feared emotion.”

HEALING THE

PAIN OF THE PAST by Lara Potgieter

MOST OF US BELIEVE THAT HEALING FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA OR SEVERE EMOTIONAL PAIN TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT – SOMETIMES EVEN YEARS OF THERAPY.

DID YOU KNOW? •

34

Dr. Francine Shapiro discovered EMDR in 1987, as she was walking in a park and realised that her eyes moved back and forth when she was having a disturbing thought and that, in doing so, the thought became less distressing. EMDR promotes the same benefits as those that occur during REM sleep, including the neutralisation of negative, disturbing and unneeded psychological material while strengthening new learning, positive associations and pleasant memories. In 2013, the World Health Organisation recommended EMDR as a treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

helping you live life well

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a healing technique that believes the mind can heal psychological trauma in much the same way as the body recovers from physical trauma. That is, moving naturally towards its original state of wholeness once the emotional block or imbalance (caused by a disturbing life event or a limiting belief) has been removed. Designed to relieve the distress associated with traumatic memories, EMDR therapy is designed to facilitate the accessing and processing of these memories or negative life experiences and bring them to an ‘adaptive resolution’. With the client’s help, the EMDR practitioner determines which memory to target. The client holds the event or thought in mind while the practitioner moves her hand back and forth across the client’s field of vision, stimulating lateral eye movements. This process is believed to create similar biological mechanisms as Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. This automatically processes the memory or feelings and brings about desensitization (healing). The premise is that clients can form new associations between their traumatic memories and more accurate (or adaptive) information through EMDR. The aim is to activate their own natural healing through the process by relieving associated distress, reformulating negative beliefs, and reducing physiological arousal around a particular memory, trigger or trauma. Studies show alleviation of post-traumatic stress disorder in up to 90% of clients after just three 90-minute EMDR sessions. I was a bit apprehensive about trying EMDR with Claremont-based psychological counsellor Morgan Mitchell, as I knew she specialised in trauma counselling and I feared that my issues would seem terribly pedestrian compared to what she usually encounters in her practice. My fears were quickly assuaged as she explained that EMDR is just as useful for treating ‘everyday’ memories that lead to limiting beliefs that can cause low selfesteem and other common challenges. Morgan is the single most compassionate therapist I have encountered after many years as a client of psychological counseling. The deeply supportive space

she held allowed me to access and reprocess what had previously remained ‘no-go’ zones in my memory and mind. Although it didn’t take us long to get to the underlying root of my present gripes, I was surprised at how many layers there were to peel away regarding the issue. Morgan was endlessly patient and completely nonjudgmental. By the time we’d completed our eight sessions together, I felt as if the rope connecting me to the past hurts that had been ‘drowning’ me in the present had finally been severed.

ica’s South Afr best-selling combination of anti-inflammatory herbs turmeric & cayenne

RECOGNISED AS AN EFFECTIVE FORM OF TREATMENT FOR TRAUMA BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION, EMDR HAS BEEN USED TO HELP RAPE VICTIMS, WAR VETERANS AND VICTIMS OF ABUSE AND OTHER TRAUMA.

Realistic about the fact that old triggers might arise for me going forward, Morgan made sure I had ways of observing, recording and changing everyday life challenges that might unfold after our work was done. If you have any difficulties related to pain or trauma in the past, or if you simply have a lingering sense of emotional or psychological un-ease you can’t quite attribute to anything in your current environment, I couldn’t recommend EMDR more highly. The liberation that comes from getting to the root of our seemingly myriad issues, and addressing them on a physiological level with someone whose sole intent is for our authentic healing, is incomparable.

Equine-assisted therapy has risen in popularity in recent years, promoting physical, occupational and emotional growth in those facing a range of different mental and physical challenges. Children with autism - a mental condition characterised by difficulty in communicating, forming relationships and using language and abstract concepts - can experience particularly strong benefits from engaging with horses. Equine-assisted therapy can help these children develop certain core skills needed to function in society. Autistic children find it difficult to form relationships with other people, but are able to enjoy deep emotional bonds with horses due to the fact they are able to communicate with them on a predominantly physical level, sharing thoughts and feelings through body language and behaviour. While horses do not offer any verbal demands or expectations, they show their appreciation when being brushed or patted. Children with autism come to associate the care they provide the horses with feelings of love and attachment, and an emotional bridge is built with another being. Therapy horses are specifically chosen and trained to be gentle, patient and calm. They offer an unconditional, non-judgmental companionship, seeing only a person rather than a person with autism. This encourages a more positive sense of self in the children working with them, enabling them to become more confident, trusting and, eventually, loving to both themselves and others. The bond formed between a child with autism and a horse can also lead to the development of social and communication skills with other people in his or her life. To achieve this, the therapist will address auditory processing and communication issues by asking the child to follow directions like “turn and go a bit faster”, and she will in turn need to direct these to the horse, pulling the reins or using simple commands such as “stop” and “go”. The more excited the child becomes about the riding, the more she will want to communicate with both the therapist and the horse. Other cognitive concepts are also encouraged during the interaction, with children encouraged to throw balls into baskets, perform specific movements to song lyrics and identify things they observe while riding.

In terms of the physical benefits, when a horse’s movement is transferred to its rider, a combination of sensory, motor and neurological input is produced. Strong sensory stimulation is offered to muscles and joints, improving balance and the detection of movement by sensory receptors, as well as offering various tactile experiences as the rider touches the horse. Core muscle strength, muscle symmetry, posture, circulation, coordination and even breathing are improved through horse riding. This is all particularly beneficial for autistic children, who are unable to integrate their senses and understand how their bodies relate to external forces and surfaces. If you can’t wait to finish reading this so you can take your child to meet a horse, just remember that the first time she is introduced to equine-assisted therapy, she may display the same types of behaviour that can accompany any change in her environment. Do not be disheartened by the initial crying, screaming, or avoidance behaviours – as soon as she is on the horse and it starts moving, she will most likely calm down and begin to enjoy the process. While equine-assisted therapy is lauded for giving autistic children a sense of themselves and their bodies and increasing their contact and interaction with the world, our favourite part of it is just how much enjoyment it clearly brings them. For them it’s not therapy – it’s just a ton of fun!

CART HORSE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION Penny Lankester

Badly shod, thin, overloaded, overworked and abused working cart horses were a common site on Cape Town roads when the Cart Horse Protection Association was established back in 1995. Today, the association provides clinic, patrol and call-out, response, veterinary and rehabilitation services to 263 working cart horses on the Cape Flats. They also offer support, education and training to cart horse owners and drivers who use working cart horses as a means of generating an income for themselves and their families. They currently work with 113 owners in 21 areas across the Cape Flats, where it is estimated that the cart horses support a community of 2400 people. Over the past 20 years the association has developed from offering their services out of two rusty shipping containers into a credible organisation that is recognised both nationally and internationally in the field of equine welfare. Always on the move, the Cart Horse Association is a progressive organisation constantly finding new ways to solve problems, following trends in the industry to inform their strategy and finding new ways to ensure the welfare of the working cart horse. Their latest project is a youth development programme to teach the youth in the communities where they work to uphold the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare through their humane education programme. WHAT IS HEMP SEED OIL, WHY IS IT SO POPULAR AND WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEMP SEED OIL AND MEDICAL MARIJUANA? FROM LEGALITIES AND PRODUCTION TO DOSES AND VARIETY OF USES; WE TAKE YOU THROUGH ONE OF THE MOST INCREASINGLY POPULAR HEALTH PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET.

HEMP TABOO Hemp seed oil is an increasingly popular product, used for an expanding variety of purposes. It’s a controversial crop in some regions of the world, because parts of the Cannabis genus plant have psychoactive properties. In discussions around hemp oil you’ll often hear the terms CBD and THC which are components that distinguish different qualities of the plant. CBD, or Cannabidiol is a chemical compound found in the Cannabis plant. It’s a compound that doesn’t produce any psychoactive effects but is known to hold the highest medicinal value. Research deems it effective for treating inflammation, pain, seizures, anxiety and spasms associated with multiple sclerosis, becoming a major focus of scientists, researchers and doctors alike. Many cancer patients use CBD as part of their treatment. Doctors at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute have found that CBD is a potent inhibitor of cancer. Documented, medical research

shows that CBD inhibits the ID-1 protein gene which is a major conductor of cancer cells and CBD has been shown to slow and sometimes stop the metastasis in certain patients suffering from certain forms of cancer. More research is needed though and several clinical trials are under way.

CONTRIBUTING TO THE GROWING POPULARITY OF HEMP SEED OIL IS A GLOBAL RECOGNITION AND PRAISE OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS.

THC or Tetrahydro-cannabinol is the psychoactive constituent of the Cannabis plant and underlies much of the controversy around the plant which has legal restrictions in most countries.

Washed hemp seed contains no THC at all. The tiny amounts of THC contained in industrial hemp are in the glands of the plant itself. Sometimes, in the manufacturing process, some THC- and CBD-containing resin sticks to the seed, resulting in traces of THC in the oil that is produced. The concentration of these cannabinoids in the oil is infinitesimal. No one can get high from using hemp seed oil. But, to get to grips with what it really is, here’s a run-down of the different types of products that can be derived from hemp: Hemp Essential Oil: This comes from the upper leaves and flowers. They’re steamdistilled and contain no THC or CBD. It’s an expensive product as it takes a huge amount of hemp plant to get each drop of oil. It is mostly used in flavouring and perfumes. Hemp Seed Oil: As the name says, this comes from the seeds of the hemp plant. It can be derived in two ways; either unrefined and cold-pressed, or refined. The unrefined

oil is green in colour with a nutty flavour, and has all its nutrition preserved. The refined oil is clear with little or no flavour. It’s typically used in nutrition supplements, as an ingredient in body care products, lubricants and some plastics. Hemp CBD Oil: This is the oil used for medicinal purposes. It doesn’t contain any THC, and is being sold around the world as a health supplement. CBD is non-psychoactive and has been shown to be safe, even in large doses, for human consumption. It has anti-psychotic properties and is used in the treatment of many nervous system issues.

There are number of places through which you can buy hempseed oil for nutrition. Coyne Healthcare stocks CBD Hemp Oil and a brand called Elixinol has a range of CBD hemp oil tinctures available in Cinnamint and Natural flavour. Elixinol products meet the local restrictions on hemp oil as they contain less than 10 parts per million of THC. HEMP BENEFITS Contributing to the growing popularity of hemp seed oil is a global recognition and praise of the health benefits. Hemp seeds are an incredibly healthy source of protein and nutritious oils packed with all eight of the essential fatty acids the body needs. While hemp oil and tinctures are virtually free of THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis) and have no psychoactive properties and won’t make you ‘high’, but they do have proven health benefits, so they’re excellent for supporting a healthy lifestyle. Hemp seed oil is a medically recognised treatment for conditions including diabetes II, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and arthritis. It also reduces the inflammation caused by eczema, psoriasis and acne, so it’s super for healing and moisturising dry skin. The oil nourishes your skin, providing useful fatty acids to restore a youthful appearance. When used on hair it can stimulate blood circulation in the head, and even thicken hair texture. Unrefined, cold-pressed oil has a rich, nutty flavour and a green tint. After some refining, hemp oil becomes colourless and the flavour, minimal. The oil has many applications and uses; one classic use is in soaps. Hemp oil is also used in paints and lubricants, and in body care products. It may be rubbed directly onto the skin to treat cracked, dry skin, or blended into helping you live life well

body oils, body creams, and other personal care products. It can be used as a dietary supplement, taking advantage of the high concentrations of essential fatty acids in unrefined hemp oil or using the oil as a dressing or garnish to improve nutrition. Unrefined hemp oil doesn‘t have a very long shelf life. The oil quickly goes rancid, unless it is stored in dark containers in a refrigerated environment. People who use unrefined hemp oil generally purchase it in small amounts to avoid it going off. The oil is not suitable for cooking because it has a very low smoking point. Refined hemp oil has a more stable shelf life; although many of the benefits are not present after refining. SIDE EFFECTS & PRECAUTIONS As with all health products, it is advised to check with your doctor before commencing treatment with hemp oil as it may lower your blood pressure, so if you are taking blood pressure medication, you may no longer require it. It’s a good idea for those beginning treatment with the oil to check their blood pressure often and then reduce their intake of blood pressure medications as blood pressure levels reduce. Those who have low blood pressure may, in some cases, find it necessary to ingest even smaller doses and to increase their dosages accordingly. Those struggling with Diabetes should also be aware that a need for insulin may be reduced. A DOSE OF CONTENTION In some regions, cultivation of hemp is banned, although products made from hemp such as oil, hemp garments, and hemp paper may be legal. In other areas, hemp is permitted, but only industrial hemp, and some nations freely permit cultivation of all plants in this genus, assuming that regulation is a more efficient technique for control than outright bans. Wild hemp is also not uncommon in some regions of the world, making it difficult to enforce bans on hemp crops. Some believe the curative properties are best experienced when taking hemp oil with both CBD and THC intact. There is hugely contentious opinion on this matter and besides the legal implications of this action, the side effects of THC can be extreme ranging from euphoria to anxiety and including both auditory and visual hallucinations. For now, having access to the nonpsychoactive industrial hemp products is a great start towards leading a healthy lifestyle.

GREEN GLOW by Kirsten Alexander

PACK AWAY YOUR DARK LINER, LIP GLOSS AND HAIR-STRAIGHTENER; THE BACK-TO-BASIC TREND IN BEAUTY IS BIGGER THAN EVER BEFORE

With so many beauty products now using green ingredients, we’re spoiled for choice this summer. With each earthy beauty trend bringing us closer to our roots there are so many options to embrace and celebrate what nature has given us. From natural hair colour to superfood make-up products, we take a look at the latest natural beauty trends and why they’re so effective. BE YOU! A quick glance at social media and you will see infinite examples of women and girls breaking beauty ‘rules’ and showcasing their individualism. Once concealed, freckles are now celebrated and hair colour almost knows no bounds - hues in shades of everything are everywhere. Ordinary hair dyes are loaded with harsh chemicals, including ammonia, peroxide, SLS, parabens and even formaldehyde. These synthetics damage your hair over time, making it dull and dry – not to mention the havoc they can wreak once they wash into our waterways. Opting for natural hair dye really is a no-brainer; it’s the healthier choice for you and your planet. With an ever-growing range of natural hair dye colours in South Africa, you’ll find it easy to ditch those commercial chemicals. Faux freckles have been popping up on the runways to complement the no-makeup effect. It’s the season to rock your dots; so if you’re donning freckles now’s the time to show them off. You can still get all the sun kisses you desire with natural sunscreen. By using a natural sunblock, you’re not just shielding your skin from UVA and UVB rays – you’re also preventing a huge number of synthetic chemical ingredients from entering your bloodstream. While chemical sun cream can block the pores and cause allergic reactions, natural suncare ingredients are much gentler and will actually work to improve your skin’s health. Organic sunblock is also eco-friendly and won’t harm marine life or damage coral reefs. FARM TO FACE Over the past decade, the food and wellness industries have re-established a connection between our food, our health, and our planet. Thus making ‘farm-totable’ dining trendy and in the process changing unhealthy habits that affect our bodies and the planet. We know that eating healthy foods is one way to a vibrant, healthy looking complexion. So, why not go

straight to the source and put them directly on your skin? This is the idea behind farmto-face beauty care. This trend sits within the holistic way we view our wellbeing and recognising the connection between what you put in and on your body. Paleo Beauty, where skincare echoes the routines and ingredients used by our ancestors is also a trend on the rise.

OVER THE PAST DECADE, THE FOOD AND WELLNESS INDUSTRIES HAVE RE-ESTABLISHED A CONNECTION BETWEEN OUR FOOD, OUR HEALTH, AND OUR PLANET.

Quinoa is loaded with vitamin E and essential amino acids to calm and hydrate the skin and soften hair. Chia seed extract is very gentle on skin, making it an ideal ingredient for those with sensitivities. You can use a Chia seed serum to calm and hydrate delicate complexions. Hemp seeds are full of healthy fats and protein. When used on skin, the oil balances oil production, reduces blemishes, and wards off further outbreaks. Goji berries are full of powerful antioxidants; a goji berry toner can be used to protect against lines and spots, and boost a radiant glow. SMALL-BATCH BEAUTY Batch-made beauty products, formulated in small runs and with limited shelf life, are definitely on the rise. The businesses behind them are celebrating the variation between collections and tapping into public desire to move away from mass-produced, processed skincare. Much like what is happening in the shop local movements. Scaled-down, handcrafted batches means they can cater to niche interests; products that are vegan, sustainable, or contain only unprocessed ingredients. Small batch beauty brands often focus on being some combination of cruelty-free, eco-friendly or non-toxic, with sustainable and certified organic ingredients, or natural ingredients with nutritional benefits.

One example of a proudly South African product range is made with all-natural ingredients, including cape chamomile and cucumber extract, and hand crafted in small batches to ensure wonderful freshness. Many are following trend and offering both, eco-friendly and animal-friendly, in the form of green skin care that celebrates natural beauty and care for the environment. WATERLESS SKINCARE A wave of natural waterless products are appearing on the South African market. The presence of water creates a necessity for a preservative; to prevent mould, fungus, and bacteria from growing in it. Products that do not contain any water are self-preserving and require only antioxidants such as Vitamin E or rosemary oil; ingredients that help naturally keep the products fresh while benefitting the skin.

44

helping you live life well

Another benefit of no water? A little goes a long way. Waterless products are highly concentrated and contain the full therapeutic value of the active ingredients. This means waterless products are super effective and less product is needed for each application. Less consumption, less packaging and less transportation means you can show the environment just as much love as you do your skin. A local waterless product uses beeswax, marigold, seaweed and a blend of precious essential oils, providing skin with rejuvenating bio-available vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes for tissue renewal all without the need for a preservative.

SOIL FOR THE SOUL by Lara Potgieter

WE DON’T NEED TO BE REMINDED OF HOW FAR WE HAVE DRIFTED FROM OUR ONCE INTRICATE CONNECTION TO ALL THAT IS. EACH OF US IS, AT CORE, INNATELY CREATIVE AND INSTINCTIVELY LURED BY NATURAL BEAUTY. MOST OF US ARE WELL AWARE THAT WE HAVE ALLOWED AN ONGOING STREAM OF UNCONSCIOUS IMPRINTS TO SOW SEEDS OF SEPARATION IN THE DELICATE SOILS OF OUR INTERNAL LANDSCAPES. WE FEEL RESTLESS, UNGROUNDED. WE OFFER OUR ATTENTION TO A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT SCREENS FOR MOST OF OUR WAKING HOURS BUT STRUGGLE TO KEEP OUR FOCUS ON OUR OWN BREATH FOR MORE THAN A FEW MOMENTS.

GARDENING IS NOT JUST ABOUT INCORPORATING THE OUTDOORS INTO OUR DAILY ROUTINES. IT PROVIDES US WITH PROFOUND TEACHINGS ABOUT LIFE. WE ARE EXPOSED TO THE NEVER-ENDING CYCLES OF BIRTH AND DEATH, THE UNHURRIED PACE OF THE NATURAL WORLD AND, PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE ENDURANCE AND ULTIMATE VICTORY OF GROWTH OVER ALL ELSE. THROUGH OBSERVING THESE MINI ECO-SYSTEMS, OUR OWN LIVES ARE PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE.

did you know?

Of the many popular leisure activities designed to encourage a step outside of the rush, gardening helps us to emerge anew in one of the most healthy and complete ways. It is grounded and creative, allowing us to weave nature into our lives in a way that sees us both accept the responsibility of facilitator and surrender to the complex web of micro-life that unfolds before us.

46

helping you live life well

The good news is that we are trying. We take ourselves to workshops, festivals, meditation circles, exotic beaches. We are so acutely aware of the colour and abundance into which a well-tended internal landscape can grow that it sometimes hurts to feel at once so expansive and yet so stuck. The same wisdom that is in the Earth is in each of us, and the fact that many of us are no longer living in a healthy relationship with the natural world can be overwhelming to our systems in ways that we don’t always realise. What we also don’t often realise is that re-establishing our sense of the natural order and rhythm of our lives can be as simple as donning a pair of green gloves and stepping outside. A recent study in the Netherlands had two groups of people either reading indoors or gardening for 30 minutes after completing a stressful task. Although reading is one of my all-time favourite pastimes, the fact that the group that gardened had lower levels of cortisol than the readers after the exercise did not surprise me.

DISCOVER YOUR OWN GARDENING GREATNESS October is a great time to dive into the magic of gardening. Here are a few tips from Starke Ayres on making the most of your garden this month: • • •

• •

Remember to water regularly as the days warm up. Sow in some more seed trays and transplant your seedlings. Plant summer annuals such as petunias, verbenas, zinias, chillies and peppers for beautiful colour. Plant post-winter vegetables and fruit such as watermelon, turnip, sweetcorn, strawberries, squash, radish, pumpkin, potato, lettuce, cucumber, beans, beetroot, chillies and peppers. Mulch the garden to prepare and protect against the summer heat. Keep an eye out for aphids at this time of year.

Our dirt-free lives have separated us from our natural primal states to such an extent that there is much left to be reclaimed. Most of us feel the lost parts of ourselves coming home as we dig our hands into the dirt, even if we can’t quite express or even comprehend what’s really going on at an energetic and cellular level. Enjoying the elements, strengthening our bodies through the repetitive tasks of digging, planting and weeding and treating ourselves to our own fresh, healthy produce are just the tip of the iceberg – the tangible manifestations of the magic.

CARBON

footprints by Kirsten Alexander

EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT CARBON FOOTPRINT BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS IT AND HOW CAN YOU LOWER YOURS?

did you know? A surfers carbon footprint is 50 per cent greater than the average person. The production of surfboards alone creates on average 220,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, according to Rick Lomax from Surf Science.

48

helping you live life well

WHAT IS A CARBON FOOTPRINT Picture taking a beach walk on the ebbed tide sand; when you look back you’ll notice your footprints along the sandy shore. A carbon footprint, while not as readily seen, can be viewed in much the same way. A carbon footprint is the degree of your environmental impact, measured in units of carbon dioxide. Things you use on a daily basis, like that oil heater you use to keep your house warm or petrol for your family’s car, create carbon dioxide - also called CO2. So many of the activities we do every day have an impact; it’s easy then to see how your everyday activities may contribute to a production of carbon emissions.

Carbon dioxide is deemed a greenhouse gas and many scientists believe that greenhouse gases are making the earth too warm. Your carbon footprint is the total amount of CO2 you create along your life’s journey. A big carbon footprint is bad for the planet. SOURCES OF CARBON DIOXIDE The electricity you use in your home forms the biggest part of your carbon footprint. Although electricity doesn’t make greenhouse gases when you use it, the power plants that make the electricity do. Coal burning plants create the most CO2. Keeping warm in the winter is the second biggest source of CO2, and adds

dramatically to your carbon footprint. Your house probably uses fossils fuels like oil, natural gas or electricity to keep you warm. The amount of CO2 your house makes depends on the type of fuel you use . You also add to your carbon footprint when you run the air conditioner to stay cool during summer.

a new air conditioning unit, dishwasher, or fridge. •

Lights Out: Turn off lights you’re not using and when you leave the room. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent or LED ones.

Eat locally-produced and organic food: Transporting food requires petroleumbased fuels, and many fertilizers are also fossil fuel-based.

Cut the beef and dairy: It takes a lot of resources to raise cows, especially where they graze on land that used to be a tropical forest but is now cleared for agricultural use. Deforestation is a top contributor to carbon emissions.

Water usage: Lower the amount of energy used to pump, treat, and heat water by washing your car less often, using climate-appropriate plants in your garden, installing drip irrigation so that plants receive only what they need, and making water-efficient choices when purchasing shower heads, tap fittings, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines.

Reuse and recycle: Buying used products and reselling, recycling or upcycling items you no longer use will dramatically reduce your carbon footprint.

Support clean energy sources: Whenever you can, advocate for clean alternatives to fossil fuels, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and appropriately designed hydroelectric and biomass energy projects.

Buy and consume less. Examine what you really need versus the excess you buy. Simplify and you’ll be doing the planet a favour and probably yourself too.

Counteract your carbon footprint by planting trees.

Cars create CO2 as waste. Buses, trains and planes also produce CO2, and even your rubbish makes your carbon footprint bigger.

BUY AND CONSUME LESS. EXAMINE WHAT YOU REALLY NEED VERSUS THE EXCESS YOU BUY. SIMPLIFY AND YOU’LL BE DOING THE PLANET A FAVOUR AND PROBABLY YOURSELF TOO.

REDUCE YOUR FOOTPRINT Here are 10 simple ways you can reduce your carbon footprint on our precious planet: •

Alternatives to driving: When possible, walk or ride your bike to avoid carbon emissions completely. Lift-clubs and public transport drastically reduce CO2 emissions by spreading them out over many riders. Stay Classy: Economy class is best, for the same reasons as lift-clubs and public transport. Each flyer’s share of a flight’s carbon emissions is relatively less because it’s spread out over more people. Insulate and seal your home: Reduce drafts and air leaks with insulation and weather stripping. This will relieve the need for fossil fuel based solutions to keeping a warmer home. Appliances: Make energy efficiency a primary consideration when choosing

TIP: Work out your carbon footprint by using one of these online calculators: www.nature.org/greenliving/carboncalculator/ www.footprint.wwf.org.uk/

ENVIRONMENTAL PILGRIMAGE NEUTRALISE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT Ayala Katz has an extraordinary vision of creating bio-diverse indigenous walkways and planting a million and eight trees during her lifetime. Her intention is to create a spiritual and environmental pilgrimage in the Western Cape. This first phase consists of a 108 kilometre walking trail stretching from Caledon Village in the Overberg through Platbos forest and beyond. This is a trail where people can safely walk through the wilderness and benefit from the healing and contemplation that nature brings. Part and parcel of the journey is to plant trees in the forest and surrounding area.

through private farms. It’s a beautiful stretch of the countryside with immense floral biodiversity, coastal thickets and cultivated fields. During Spring you get to see the full spendour of our diverse floral kingdom. Each pilgrim will be required to acquire a passport from the Mayors office, where they will get it stamped and pay a donation. Part of this payment will go towards the twenty thousand trees needed to finish foresting Platbos, rehabilitate the walk-ways and clear alien vegetation.

“The idea is inspired by the ‘Camino de Santiago’ in Spain, but we live in Africa, so this will have a uniquely different way of unfolding.” says Ayala.

It will also contribute towards a roaming vehicle to carry tents, assist pilgrims and carry necessary items. Food, accommodation and provisions, will be provided by the local community, along the way. The route will be clearly marked and easy to follow.

The corridors are along railway lines, service roads, secondary and public roads and

THE PLANTING OF TREES AND REFORESTATION IS ONE OF THE MOST VITAL TASKS OF THE WORLD TODAY. THEIR FUNCTION IS LEGION AND THEIR LIFE IS INTERWOVEN WITH THAT OF MAN AND ANIMAL, EARTH AND AIR, FOOD AND WATER...MEN AND TREES, WATER AND TREES, MAN AND WATER ARE INSEPARABLE. THIS IS THE TRINITY OF LIFE. RICHARD ST. BARBE BAKER, THE ‘MAN OF THE TREES’ (1889 - 1982)

Ayala Katz, Peace Ambassador and Enviro-Pilgrim has walked thousands of kilometres in her lifetime from the Camino in Spain to trails in Nepal and the Himalayas, through the Tankwa Karoo to the Eastern Cape. “Walking is my yoga, it gives me the opportunity to reconnect with myself and my life’s purpose, it reconnects me to my authentic power and helps me stay in my heart centre”

TREE GIFT Participate in the reforestation project by donating a tree, the recommended donation is R150 but any amount is accepted. All sponsors will be recorded with their dedication on a wall of remembrance and will receive an e-certificate. Platbos is an ancient indigenous forest at the foot of Africa on the slopes of the Baviaanspoort Hills. It is on the Grootbos Road between the fishing village of Gansbaai and the seaside town of Hermanus in the Western Cape Province. Described by well-known botanist and author, Professor Eugene Moll, as a “unique South African forest jewel”, this is a forest that enchants and inspires all who come to visit. The surrounding vegetation comprises low-growing limestone Fynbos (an endangered ecosystem of immense floral biodiversity), coastal thickets, cultivated fields and dense stands of invasive alien vegetation. Making a donation to plant a tree at Platbos, means helping to conserve and extend the biodiversity of the forest. For when you plant a tree at Platbos, you are sponsoring a square metre of forest canopy and the myriad of life forms that this supports - from mosses, lichens, birds and bees, to bushbuck and honey badgers. Whether it’s planting a tree in honour of someone special, or sponsoring tree planting to minimize your ecological footprint, your participation in the Trees for tomorrow Reforestation Project contributes towards the goal of conserving and rehabilitating this unique forest. www.platbos.co.za For more details on how to donate go to www.ayala-katz.wixsite.com/peacetreepilgrimage or email: peacetreepilgrimage@gmail.com

FREEDOM

FROM WITHIN TRUE FREEDOM IS AN INSIDE JOB Everyone knows the many benefits yoga has for your body, mind and spirit. But using it in prisons has an incredible effect. SevaUnite, a service organization based in Cape Town has an incredibly progressive approach towards offender rehabilitation that’s proving highly successful and creating true transformation. Lee-Ann Olwage went to photograph some of the evidence.

Teaching yoga to prisoners is genius. You don’t need any equipment or a lot of space which makes it perfect for inmates. Yoga has tremendous potential to rehabilitate an inmate and give them the opportunity to become more self-reflective. It reduces stress, aggression, and negativity and promotes good health and well-being. The affirming, healing and rehabilitative benefits of yoga for people living in stressful

environments are enormously beneficial. Yoga is also proven to reduce reincarceration rates — inmates who practice yoga, in the form of a system of holistic education like the Prison Freedom Project are less likely to re-offend. As a photographer I aim to align my work with stories that highlight social issues, but more importantly I look for stories of positive change and finding solutions that work. The notorious Pollsmoor prison always intrigued me. It is a maximum security prison in Cape Town originally built to accommodate 4,336 offenders, but the current inmate population is over 7,000. Every time I drove past those high walls it seemed ironic that I wanted to get into a place that everyone else was trying to get out. When I finally got the chance I was blown away by what I saw, but not for the reasons you might think. I entered the prison with many expectations. I was concerned that my presence as a female in the male section would be a distraction and would take the men’s focus away from the yoga class. I was warned by many to be prepared for vile comments and all kinds of harassment. I stood between the very high walls waiting in anticipation. From the moment I met the men who arrived for class I was in complete awe of the transformation I saw. The profound, positive effect yoga has had on these men’s lives moved my soul.

They were completely present and incredibly focused on their practice. There was an amazing level of respect for each other and myself. I always knew yoga would have many benefits for prisoners, but what I saw blew me away. The focus, clarity, peace, respect and calm I witnessed was something I never expected to see in a maximum security prison. SevaUnite’s Prison Freedom Project has managed to transform some of the most hardcore inmates into new people. This is the most powerful transformative form of offender rehabilitation I have witnessed. And who would have thought of teaching yoga to prisoners?

SEVA UNITE SevaUnite is a non-profit, non-religious organisation, with two dedicated fulltime staff members, an active board of trustees and a team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers. Seva is a Sanskrit word which means service. Brian Bergman, Founder and Director, is also a well-trained and experienced yoga practitioner. www. sevaunite.org.

YOGA PRACTICE HAS MANAGED TO REMOVE ALL THE DIRTY THOUGHTS WHICH MY MIND WAS SO FULL OF. NOW MY MIND IS ALWAYS CLEAR AND THINKS POSITIVE THINGS. JAKE

One of the inmates approached me after the class. It was his first time there. I asked him what made him decide to come. “Prison is such a negative place. When I saw how positive, calm and relaxed the guys were after they returned from the class I decided to see what this yoga was all about. I wanted to feel like they did.” He left with this huge smile.

MOLECULES OF

EMOTION

NEW SCIENCE HAS PROVEN OUR CELLS ARE INFORMED BY OUR EMOTIONS. WHAT THAT MEANS IS WE HAVE THE POWER TO FEEL OURSELVES BETTER. DR ARIEN VAN DER MERWE TAKES US THROUGH THE SCIENCE. Bless every single one of the 50 trillion cells that make up your biological, mind-body entity. Do this every morning! Every one of those tiny little cells is industriously working to keep you alive and well. They’ve been up all night and before you have even had your first cup of coffee, they’ve put in all the work necessary for you to have a happy and productive day. We should be waking up each morning with a song, or an ode, dedicated to these tireless little entities that keep us alive. They should receive compliments and accolades but instead we usually send them negative messages. This may seem oversimplified but, in essence, good health, general wellness and overall happiness boil down to the way we

DID YOU KNOW? One of the best things you can do for your health is to decide to change your inner and outer life with improved healthenhancing behaviour. Genetics do play a part in illness by determining the physical weak links, that is, the physical system where it will manifest first by way of symptoms. If you take care of the epigenetic environment, however, the genetic expression can, and will, be changed, or never even express itself.

perceive things and the resultant messages we send to our cells. Our perception does not only influence our feelings or emotions, it physically influences the way our cells react. Every single organ in your body is a grouping of cells each marching to their own defined drum. We determine the beat of that drum. This is not airy-fairy, new age, mumbo jumbo – it is fact backed up by scientific, medical research. Not only are our cells very hard-working, they are also terribly obedient. If you tell your cells you will inherit the sugar problem that your dad and grandad had, they will obey. This may sound like horrible news but on the flip-side, they will also obey the command to ignore a certain genetic

predisposition, which means you are not a victim of your genes. You have the power to take control of your own health. The cell membrane and its environment is where this communication is received either as an on-going dissonant cacophony or harmonious sound – it’s called the epigenetic interface (‘epi’ means ‘above’ or ‘over’, i.e. more important than, the genetic information encoded in the DNA). The emerging field of epigenetics is showing us that the cell membrane and its receptor binding sites, supersede the genetic code and can restore cell function, even genetic in origin. The environment of the cell is ultimately responsible for the efficacy of cell function through selective binding to receptors.

The cell’s environment includes nutrients (the quality of what you eat), oxygen (how you breathe), water (that you drink), the vibrations of thoughts and emotions (how you feel moment to moment) via the molecules of emotion (peptides or informational substances). Ultimately it also includes the sense we have of our soul connection to our Source or Inner Being, to encourage a higher vibration even through the colours we see and sound we hear (field of metagenetics). ‘Our thoughts create our reality’. This is a strange concept for many of us. How could what you think, possibly make you sick or well, happy or unhappy?

I SUGGEST THAT THE BODY AND SOUL REACT TO EACH OTHER IN SYMPATHY. A CHANGE IN THE STATE OF THE SOUL WOULD NECESSARILY HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE BODY AND VICE VERSA’. ARISTOTLE, 400 BC

Candace Pert was a neuroscientist who did a lot of research on the neuropeptides. She was the first to call them the ‘molecules of emotions’. Peptides are miniscule pieces of protein. Protein comes from the Greek word ‘proteios’, meaning primary. Proteins are the first material of life as we know it. Peptides consist of strings of amino acids of varying lengths, joined together in a necklace by very strong bonds made of carbon and nitrogen. Between 10 and 100 amino acids that form a strong bond, are called peptides. Between 100 to 200 are called polypeptides and more than 200 are called proteins. Amino acids are the letters that when combined in certain sequences, form the words that are peptides, or the sentences that are polypeptides or proteins. These make up a language that forms and directs the function of every single cell, organ and system inside the body, from the deepest vibrations of the DNA molecule inside the nucleus of every cell, to the macrocosmic systems function of the whole individual being. More than 90 neuropeptides have been identified so far, associated with mood changes, nerve, hormone and immune regulation. Well known groups of neuropeptides include the neurotransmitters that carry messages across synapses in the nervous system, growth factors, gut peptides, immune system modulators (e.g. interleukins, cytokines, chemokines, growth inhibitors that tell cells when to stop growing). A better term for the peptides might be informational substances. Other common peptides include the endorphins (our own happy hormones), insulin (responsible for blood sugar control), vasopressin (responsible for blood pressure), sex hormone releasing hormones, serotonin (the feelgood neurotransmitter).

There are 20 essential amino acids found in the human body. ‘Essential’ means we have to get them from the food we eat, as they’re not manufactured inside the body. The first peptide, secretin was discovered in the gut. This surprised scientists as they thought all physiological functions were controlled purely by electrical impulses from the brain and nerves. Then the endogenous endorphins, enkephalin peptides that bind to the body’s own opiate (morphine-like) receptors inside the brain, were found. This led to a mad search for receptors and their binding peptides inside the brain, this explains the pronoun ‘neuro’peptides. It was only realised much later that every single peptide was made in many parts of the body, including of course, the brain. Now we know that peptides are actually manufactured throughout the whole body, e.g. immune cells, bone marrow and gut cells have receptors for, and produce, neuropeptides. The T & B-cells of the immune system communicate with the brain and vice versa via the neuropeptides. Some emotions suppress lymphocyte (immune) function, others may enhance it. All the neuropeptides have a similar molecular structure, with subtle differences in the tertiary structure, meaning that only the frequency and amplitude at which each molecule oscillates (wavelike vibrations of electrons in each molecule), differ. Neuropeptides change configuration (like

56

helping you live life well

a chameleon) due to emotional influence, according to specific thoughts and emotions. Depending on the thoughts and emotions, specific neuropeptides are made in the brain and nervous system, white blood cells, reproductive system, digestive system and heart, to name but a few. They form a two-way network between psyche and soma, mind and body. The complicated and complex communication network between cells, neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, hormones, immune system, blood and nerves, demands a remarkable orchestration of effective communication and integration of form and function, for the body-mind to work as one healthy, balanced and integrated whole. Notice the heart rate differences based on two very common human emotions. Appreciation leads to a slower, more coherent heart rate. We can choose in any moment to run the gratitude circuitry in our minds.

Let’s simplify the concept by using practical examples. The specific feelgood peptide (e.g. serotonin), binds to its specific receptors on the cell membrane. This sends a ‘feel-good’ message to the inside of the cell, right into the nucleus. The message influences every function the cell is responsible for, including the expression of the DNA molecule. Now consider the fact that you constantly think of things others have done to harm you; or you feel stressed out and overwhelmed, with unhappy, resentful, angry thoughts and feelings that grow and increase to disproportionate levels every time you think about it. The thoughts become emotions, then the peptide informational substances that course through your body, influencing your mood, your cell function and efficacy. Do you think that any cell receiving these messages for 30 years, would still feel like functioning well enough for you to be optimally happy, alive and fully self-actualising to become all you’re meant to be?

BOOK REVIEWS by Lara Potgieter in which dietary intake is significantly reduced. Annchen and Annaret suggest the 5:2 regime – in which fasting is practiced for two consecutive days each week – as the most practical option. Their book offers a comprehensive guide to helping you navigate the new routine, with tools for monitoring your progress, planning meal intervals, creating meals using portion control and more.

adults by 2035. In this invaluable guide to the concern, Dr. Arien van der Merwe – a medical doctor specialising in natural integrative medicine – offers a wonderfully balanced resource that draws on both the conservative, analytical and scientific approach to the disease, and the more liberal, emotional and symbolic factors at play. Dr. Arien provides a comprehensive overview of the facts before offering a series of positive solutions towards a holistic approach to managing the disease.

Simplicious l Sarah Wilson Macmillan Although Sarah refers to her latest title as “a book about how to eat your scraps”, it’s more of a tome on sustainable eating that includes everything from how best to buy in bulk, what to buy organic, how to effectively sort and store ingredients, how to really savour your leftovers and more. This combined with Sarah’s encouragement for readers to ‘JERF’ (Just Eat Real Food) makes for a great guide for those of us who subscribe to the ‘less is more’ mentality when it comes to both health and consumerism.

2016 Celestial Spheres Sky Journal l Lara Grace Golden Ray Press Our forefathers lived with a deep reverence for nature and the ways in which its forces governed their lives. By observing the sky for extended periods of time, they found a divine order to the paths and patterns of their lives – a sacredness to the unfolding of time. With this beautiful little booklet we can do the same in our lives today, taking a moment to realign with nature by harmonizing our activities to the planetary cycles and honouring the daily rhythms of nature. Charting the influences of the natural world on human consciousness, themes and priorities, the 2016 Celestial Spheres Sky Journal helps us to gain an understanding of our changing needs and reactions in relation to the natural and organic cycles of time.

Lean in 15 l Joe Wicks Pan Macmillan When the gorgeous Joe Wicks posted his first #Leanin15 video on Instagram back in early 2014, he had no idea of the sensation the concept would eventually create. What started as him filming the meals he was making for himself soon grew into the creation of this book and the accompanying global fan base. While I like the coconut and cashew dhal and the black bean tofu, I’d say that the rest of the recipes – with names like My Big Juicy Meatballs, Bad Boy Burrito and the Incredible Hulk Smoothie – speak mostly to the average health-conscious South African bachelor.

GETAWAY

Be softer with you You are a breathing thing A memory to someone A home to a life Nayyirah Waheed

SAMADHI RETREAT Samadhi Retreat is so close to Cape Town, it takes a mere 45 minutes before you’re in the middle of a completely different kind of quiet. It’s in Grotto Bay along the windswept coast filled with salty air and seagulls, with wild waves and jagged rocks flanked by hundreds of different species of fynbos protected by the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve. It’s an incredibly magical coastline that’s practically deserted. Lisle (pronounced Lyall) and Anja created their retreat centre to share their joy and peace with others. They are such delightful hosts filled with stories, wisdom, anecdotes and a both have a lovely sense of calm. Lisle is knowledgeable on many subjects, everything from meditation to Bhuddism, to eco living, the surrounding biosphere, and more. You can talk to him about almost anything, or if you prefer, about nothing at all. Anja is a qualified Reiki Master and Bach Flower Remedy practitioner. Once I had settled in and had some tea we set off along the pathway on the beach alternating our footsteps between the rocks and the flower filled trail. We arrived at a cove filled with pebbles that sloped down towards the sea. Lisle cleared away a few pieces of seaweed and all of us lay on the pebbles and listened to the musical sound of seawater shifting pebbles back and forth.

did you know? Moving outside of everyday life and away from routine makes it much easier to hear the important messages, the messages your soul wants you to hear.

60

helping you live life well

Although each wave brought a different movement to the pebbles there is a rhythm that’s gently hypnotic. Something about the slope of the beach, the waves, the fresh air and the sounds seem to empty your whole body of all its stress. Each wave emptied more layers of stress and quietened more and more conversations in my head until there was nothing left.

THE SOUL ALWAYS KNOWS WHAT TO DO TO HEAL ITSELF; THE CHALLENGE IS TO SILENCE THE MIND.

I don’t know if I’ve ever gone from city angst to complete calm in a faster period of time – it’s such a genius way of starting a rejuvenation process. After our walk we went back to the house. Each room has it’s own bathroom, the rooms are spacious and almost all of them have a sea view. You can lie in a hammock outside, or sit in the zen garden made with artfully placed stones. There’s a huge fireplace and enough space in the lounge area to host a yoga class. The next day after a wonderful breakfast we were raring to go on another hike and this time followed the coast towards Yzerfontein, if you’re energetic you could walk 22 km’s and reach Yzerfontein. Lisle and Antje are so accommodating they’ll even pick you up from the other end. The Rejuvenation Retreat is as structured or non-structured as you want it. It has many different options and none of them are prescriptive. You can match your energy levels and inclinations with a wide variety of options.

Part of the rejuvenation package is a Bach flower Essence consultation and a Reiki treatment. Antje had her therapy room beautifully prepared with candles and soft light. Working on the premise that our ‘higher selves’ or subconscious knows what we want, the participant is asked to pick up to 10 cards (each one is a picture of a different flower). Anja confirms that it’s an almost foolproof way of getting the right flower essences for each individual need. The flowers I picked formed a kind of story around my ideals and desires and I found it very affirming. The essences are designed to bring into balance the aspects of ourselves that may be unbalanced. The remedies are vibrationally imprinted with various flower essences and work on an energetic level. My Reiki treatment was also beautifully affirming. I dropped off into such a deep sleep. When I woke up I didn’t feel groggy but rather I was wonderfully relaxed. Samadhi Retreat in Grotto Bay is highly recommended. It’s takes up to 8 people so it’s small and intimate. It’s also the perfect retreat for artists or writers. It’s suitable for groups or for singles. Lisle and Anja cater for all kinds of eating requirements, you just need to warn them beforehand.

SUGGESTIONS TO REDUCE CELLULITE

There are as many people with cellulite solutions as there are professionals that say there isn’t a solution. We know that multiple factors contribute to the proper functioning and flow of a body. Nutrition, exercise, emotions, dispositions, and genes all count so although these suggestions have been offered up by various studies and experts, you always need to look at the whole person to address something properly.

COFFEE GROUNDS

GINKGO BILOBA

When one of the supermodels used her spent coffee grains as a skin scrub and swore it worked on cellulite, many people took note of the effect of caffeine. Where drinking too much coffee is dehydrating and acidic, massaging it on your skin will increase circulation. Keep the grains from your morning coffee and use them as a scrub on areas that need it.

You’ll often find ginkgo biloba in cellulite creams. It’s said to increase blood flow around the body and is great for poor circulation or if you easily feel cold. It’s one of the oldest medicines around and is taken orally for many different conditions.

DANDELION

HORSE CHESTNUT

Dandelion is a healthy diuretic that helps release trapped fluid. While other diuretics may cause postasium to leach from the body, Dandelion contains potassium and helps fluid retention without side-effects. It’s also high in antioxidants. If you find the tea or herb too bitter to drink, you can take it in supplement form.

The ingredient aescin, found in horse chestnut extract, is found to improve blood flow. Creams with horse chestnut extract also reduce inflammation and the build up of fluid. The seed and leaf have traditionally been used for treating varicose veins, hemorrhoids and swollen veins.

GOTU KOLA

Gotu kola extract is frequently researched for its benefits in reducing cellulite, and in clinical trials is shown to increase the formation of new collagen. Gotu kola extract improves skin elasticity helping minimize the appearance of cellulite, improving circulation and reducing fluid retention in people suffering from weak veins.

GREEN TEA

Green Tea is said to help the rate at which we burn calories. It also has loads of anti-oxidants and helps with detoxification. You can either drink it as tea or take it in capsule form. Drinking it before midday is best as it has a stimulating effect that could keep you awake.
