publisher's letter In this issue, we’re adding more love. With the birth of my son Zac, I’m certainly in the right frame of mind to do that. I've often heard parents gushing over their children, but it’s not always evident why – until you experience the love and devotion that overcomes you when you become a parent. Photo by Tiffany Lumley from Shots of Tots
Not only has my little man intensified my lust for life, I’m also more motivated to look after my own health and wellbeing. I want to make sure I'm there for him for as long a time as possible and that I'm fit, ready and able to join him in as many adventures in which he'll allow me to tag along. With that in mind, I’m looking forward to mixing up my exercise routine with some interval training at my recently discovered Sweat 1000 classes and getting outside and exercising on the water, road or trail – I’ll see how the different types of exercises fit in with my new (born) schedule. But I'll make a plan to fit it in as I know it is an investment in both mine and Zac's future. Getting back to nature is also important and in this issue we chat about holistic options and how these work in your body. Also, we offer advice on how to get the balance right between fantasy and truth with your children – something I'll need to give a lot of thought to in the coming months and years. And, when a new baby enters a relationship, it’s so important to keep the spark alive, so I’m definitely going to make an effort to ensure my wife knows just how much I'm in love with her. In the Live Well feature, we talk about engaging in all your senses, and although the smooth scent of vanilla has always been my favourite, right now its the brand new baby smell that I just can't get enough of. Your environment fundamentally affects your wellbeing and this is something I’ll be learning about each day as baby Zac grows, reacting to and learning from the environment and people around him. The year is already in full swing and we urge you to do what it takes to add more love to your life and reap the benefits that more love has on your wellbeing. Please note we are planning to run a lot more workshops, talks and courses this year in our Wellness Events Space at Kloof, so keep an eye out on our events schedule and learn about more ways in which to live life well.

Dune’s heartfelt attitude is reflected in the way her business is set up, the W2H line of jewellery donates a large percentage of the profits to the Tomorrow Trust Fund proceeds of which come from both local and international outlets. Most of Dune’s career has involved travelling around the world modelling for campaigns and shows.
"
“You end up living out of suitcases, I am very happy to be more settled now, it is an exhausting career,” says Dune who has recently set down roots in Llandudno, Cape Town with her husband and two children to concentrate on her jewellery line and shop.
Your body is like a temple, why would you want to put trash in it.
Meet
Dune’s specialist jewellery is available from her store called O in Camp’s Bay. Wellness Warehouse Green Living shop stocks the Wrist to Hair (W2H) range.
Dune Kossatz This month we are delighted to feature our supplier Dune Kossatz on the February cover.
did you know? Gemstones and crystals have healing properties. Many cultures have recognised that gemstones emit vibrations and frequencies that can balance and heal the body, mind and spirit. When worn close to the body they offer healing strength according to their specific attributes.

W
e love the way she embraces wellness, is mad about dancing, yoga, running and eating healthy food. Dune has a humorous, down to earth manner and likes to delve into the emotional and spiritual side of life. After years of international modelling Dune moved on to follow her passion for making jewellery. Her first pursuit was the innovative Wrist to Hair (W2H) jewellery. Having noticed that women always wear ugly hair bands around their wrists ready to tie up their hair if necessary, she thought she would design something a little more beautiful that could double as a bracelet and hair tie. She used various different colours and gave each bracelet a semiprecious stone that resonates with healing qualities. everything you need to live life well
“Everyone seems to be on a journey of self improvement and soul searching. The stones add an element of that,” says Dune. “It is interesting to see how people often gravitate towards the stone that emulates the healing they need at that time, I always like to let people choose the stone they feel most attracted to and then afterwards tell them what healing attribute it has.” Coral - stimulates creativity, visualisation, wisdom and absorbs negative energy.
When she was seventeen she won the Ford Supermodel Competition in South Africa and was elected to compete overseas which opened up doors for her all over Europe and particularly in Paris and Milan. Having worked for many of the famous fashion houses Dune has an extensive knowledge of clothing and brands and knows exactly how to put an outfit together to make it work. She opened a clothing shop in Camps Bay simply called ‘O’ and provides some of the most prestigious labels to people in search of quality. Anyone looking for Princess Tam Tam can head straight there. Her shop also has beautiful showcases with some of her handmade jewellery: necklaces, rings and earrings are simple and stylish. “Supermodels generally have no confidence; the industry makes you feel you have no value. It is difficult living amongst the superficiality of it when something as small as a pimple on your face renders you useless. There was once a shoot in New York and I had a blemish on my face, I could just feel everyone staring at me and acting stand-offish. I felt so bad, it wasn’t as though I was deliberately trying to be ugly, how do you know when a pimple might pop up. My agency phoned me and was furious, “How dare you go to a shoot with acne,” they said. Nevertheless, I was put on a terribly strong anti-acne drug which was totally unnecessary.
where I was on all the billboards. I also did shows for many of the great fashion houses like Armani, Dior, Romeo Gigi, Blue Marine, Christiaan la Croix and more. I was on the cover of some of the international fashion magazines and I got to see the world. One of my biggest disappointments career wise was missing an eight page spread in British Vogue. I was with the Storm agency in London at the time but the shoot was in Austrailia and I couldn’t get a visa fast enough to go. Dune has two children, Ryder is the first (aged 6) and a new baby of 8 months called Jesse. “My secret passion for cowboys inspired their names”, she explains. Kids teach you everything, we call the little one the golden child, he is so calm. Only after we named him did someone tell us that Jesse means ‘gift from God’. My dreams and aspirations for the future include a new clothing range called O by Dune. I want to work with silks and specialist fabric but it isn’t easy to find a seamstress that has experience with such delicate fabrics. I also have emotional challenges I want to overcome. O is situated in Camps Bay adjacent to Blues and has an emphasis on BoHo Chic with recognised labels and quality handpicked items. Dune is often available in the shop to give expert advice on what to wear and how to make your outfit work. dunekos@aol.com
WE ASKED DUNE TO SHARE SOME OF HER TIPS FOR LIVING LIFE WELL
On an emotional level: I had to realise I am totally in charge of my life and my destiny. Everything is up to me and I have the ability to change things. If someone does something that makes you angry, let it go. Being angry doesn’t harm them in any way, it just harms you. You are the one losing out. On a physical level: Your body is like a temple, why would you want to put trash in it? Drink water, exercise and smile. I have to eat a lot to keep my weight consistent otherwise I just lose too much but I eat healthy, good food. Salads and protein are my mainstay. Having said that, I am also addicted to chocolate. I love Honest chocolate, Lindt and the Solal Praline bar. I keep fit with dancing, running and yoga. My romance tip: Learn the love language that speaks to your partner, if buying flowers is what makes them feel loved, do that. If it’s quality time, make sure you are available for them. See if you resonate with the healing attributes from any of these stones available from the W2H range at the Wellness Green Living store or online at www.wellnesswarehouse.com Onyx – receive the strength to become master of your destiny. Feel supported in challenging circumstances and high stress. Citrine - helps digestion and aids in mental and intellectual functions. It increases selfesteem and energy while balancing and removing negative energy. Aventurine – excellent to reinforce decisiveness, perseverance and leadership qualities. It helps compassion and empathy. Sodalite – great for electromagnetic pollution and ‘sick-building syndrome’. It clears mental confusion and encourages rational thought and truth. Helps to calm panic attacks and enhancing self-esteem and trust. Ukanite – use this for visionary work. Bring issues to the surface to let them go. Balance emotions and release things that impair growth.
Sometimes they will stand all of you in a line and one-by-one they say, “Okay you, go, we can’t use you.” It is very degrading you have to be so strong to know you are still okay even if you have been rejected by the current shoot. There were many highlights though; I did a perfume campaign in Paris
Amethyst – helps to increase dreaming, promotes calm and combats edginess. It also helps with addiction, headaches, blood sugar imbalance and facilitates healing. www.wellnesswarehouse.com

From sexy food preparation to libido enhancing ingredients we look at food as a love offering and what to serve for breakfast in bed and midnight snacks.
did you know? Bee stings were said to be tiny wounds to the flesh by Cupid and his arsenal of love-spiked arrows, this association has put honey firmly in line as a sweet treat for lovers. 8
T
he pure nurture value of a food offering places it firmly in the bracket of giving love. Lovers feed each other, toasting their love and many a young child is comforted with a warm drink and cookies by a loving mother. First dates are often a romantic meal; celebrations of life’s milestones are marked with a feast and good food is appreciated with lip-smacking and sensual sounds of pleasure. “Men become passionately attached to women who know how to cosset them with delicate titbits.” Honoré de Balzac (1799-1859) WORLD PASSION As much as mankind has been searching for the ultimate love potion possibly since time everything you need to live life well
began, and even though the US Food and Drug Administration says that the effects of so-called aphrodisiacs are based in folklore not fact, each culture has its own special secrets and offerings believed to encourage or entice passion. Many of these foods can contribute to overall nutritional well-being, which can ultimately improve sexual health.
“Most cultures all around the world have established a link between food and love. The simple truth is that any food can be an aphrodisiac as long as you really love to eat it.” Alex Revelli Sorini (Italian author and food writer)

• Marjoram: Ancient Greeks believed it was created by Aphrodite’s own breath. Up until Victorian times, floral bouquets included sprigs of marjoram to signify the love of the sender. • Carrots: All root vegetables draw power and intensity from the earth and can transfer that power and intensity to your love life. • Basil: From India to Italy, basil (a proven stimulant) is said to bring passion and love to those who eat it. Southern Italian folklore says a woman who places a pot of basil at her window at night is prompting a visit from her lover. • Grains: Food made from grains are associated with Ceres, the Goddess of agriculture and fertility. • Fenugreek: The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used the aromatic seeds to increase bust size in women. • Apples: Associated with love especially when Paris, the prince of Troy, awarded Aphrodite a golden apple as tribute to her beauty. • Nuts: A symbol of longevity and marriage. The almond in particular is associated with fertility because its trees are among the first to flower each year. • Lemons: Lemon trees are a symbol of eternal love and faithfulness. • Wine: The ultimate love potion in liquid form, wine has an eternal connection to Eros. Grapes are a widely used symbol of fertility in many of the world’s important religions and the word ‘vino’ is a direct descendant of Venus, Goddess of Love.
EARTHLY • Ginseng: Used as an invigorating and rejuvenating agent for centuries in China. • Chilli: The intensity of heat creates sweating, blushing and a racing heart, which mimics arousal. Chillies also release endorphins and are known to block pain. • Lychee fruit: Traditionally used in China for thousands of years for its rejuvenating effects on sexuality and fertility. • Pomegranate: Enticing colours and shape, the pomegranate is filled to the brim with antioxidant goodness and was the main ingredient in ancient Greek aphrodisiac wine. • Chocolate: Dark high cacao content chocolate has now been scientifically proven to be good for your health, but watch out for added sugar.
MIDNIGHT SNACK LOVE DRINK History says that Aztec king Montezuma drank up to 50 cups of chocolate a day to sustain his harem of 600 women.
LOVE BITE Legend has it that Tortellino pasta was invented by a tavern owner who had fallen in love with a regular guest, a countess. Peeking through the keyhole to catch a glimpse of her beauty, he could only see her bellybutton through the opening. Inspired by the vision, he rushed back to the kitchen and created the pasta to resemble her navel. Ancient chefs often practised alchemy – the mixing of ingredients to create potent formulas that promoted feelings of wellness, arousal, relaxation or happiness. And food today is still all about creating the right mix to induce satiation of all the senses.
BREAKFAST IN BED These love muffins incorporate five known aphrodisiacs – easy to make and delicious for a long morning in bed. Serve with organic coffee or ginseng tea. INGREDIENTS • 1 tsp ginger • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 Tb ginseng powder • 1 ¾ cups all purpose flour (or wheat-free alternative) • 2 tsp baking powder • 1/3 cup raw cacao chocolate chips • 4 Tb butter • 1/3 cup honey (liquid works best) • 1 cup milk • 2 egg whites, slightly beaten METHOD Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix flour, baking powder, spices and ginseng powder in bowl. Meanwhile, slowly melt chocolate and butter in top of double boiler until smooth. Add melted chocolate to dry ingredients. Add honey, milk, and egg whites. Stir just enough to blend. Pour into greased muffin tins and bake for 20-25 minutes. Cool two minutes before removing from pan.

Lovemaking uses up energy and you may feel famished afterwards. For a sensual energy, pick-me-up (and never put me down) snack, whip up a snack platter for a picnic in bed. Put together a platter of almonds dribbled with honey; berries covered in melted dark chocolate; sliced apples sprinkled in cinnamon and add this tasty treat that oozes with sensual flavour:
FIG FRENZY INGREDIENTS • 2 teaspoons honey • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1/3 cup goat’s milk yogurt • 1/3 cup soft fresh goat cheese, crumbled • 12 ripe black Mission figs, halved lengthwise • Sprinkle Fleur de sel or sea salt • 2 bunches watercress, thick stems trimmed (about 4 cups) • 1 cup (loosely packed) small mint leaves • Extra-virgin olive oil METHOD Whisk together first five ingredients in medium bowl. Season with salt and reserve. Sprinkle figs with fleur de sel; set in centre of plate. Drizzle dressing on figs; scatter with watercress and mint. Season with olive oil.

MAKE LOVE WITH FOOD Over and above the mechanics of following a recipe and mixing ingredients together, there is an aspect of cooking that makes it more than a science, more than chemistry. Sometimes meals just feel as though they are infused with magic, maybe it is the Chefs personality that makes the difference or the care and thought that goes into it, the mood in the kitchen or music that plays while the pots boil. One thing that’s certain; food prepared with love tastes better. If you are what you eat, cook with love so you can eat the love in your food. Put intention into that cup of tea or coffee and add more love to your menu. Have delicious snacks and treats ready to serve.

Hoodia controls hunger without nervousness, upset stomach, racy heart, elevated body temperature or sleep interruption. It can be safely and comfortably taken at night when snacking is most prevalent. Hoodia is perfect for anyone who struggles with hunger, cravings or portion size. It is the perfect way to control appetite while re-training eating habits. It is not a stimulant nor does it possess any thermogenic properties. Permanent weight loss usually dictates that changes in one's eating habits must take place. Unfortunately, most people find it difficult to make the necessary dietary changes when they are hungry. That is why Hoodia is so effective. A prominent manufacturer cites a clinical trial involving 18 human volunteers that found Hoodia consumption reduced food intake by about 1000 calories per day compared to a placebo group. Should be used in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet and exercise.

LIVING HOLISTICALLY
When we live with holistic principles in mind, our attitude to healing, to problems, to our relationships and even to television newscasts become different.
did you know? The Holistic Principle works on the basis that every part of your physical body is connected to, and interacts with, every other part. It recognizes the interactions between the body, emotions, mind and spirit, then the connection between your entire organism and your larger environment.
14
O
nce we realise how connected everything is we find a new way of interpreting problems and finding solutions. If any part of our lives are out of balance there will be an effect in another part. Very often we tend to hone in on the presenting problem without looking at things in the bigger picture. There are so many examples of this; someone with recurring eczema might try and treat the eczema, which obviously is necessary, but not look at the stresses they are under that creates an environment for the eczema to flourish. An holistic practitioner believes some people who drink excessively are searching for spirituality and not the spirit you get from a bottle. If the excessive drinker could see everything you need to live life well
that and pursue some kind of spirituality in their lives, the impulse to drink too much might disappear. Heavy emotions can cause disease in the body and prolonged sadness or resentment can cause chronic disease. Living holistically means checking the relationship between all aspects of the self and making sure they are healthy, balanced and well nourished. Take seven of the main areas of your life and make each one work optimally.
Take 7 areas of your life and make each one work optimally >

DIET healthy fresh, chemical free food creates healthy cells, vitality and energy
events from your past may play an important role in your current condition.
EXERCISE daily exercise boosts serotonin, makes the body feel strong and capable
Naturopathic doctors treat the body holistically and will use in depth lifestyle knowledge to assess a persons condition and treatment plan. They also work with the body’s natural intelligence rather than against it. Prevention is a key component of Naturopathic medicine. Knowing where your weaknesses and vulnerabilities are makes it easier for you to take care in those areas.
RELAXATION living with less stress brings clarity of mind and a calm disposition PURPOSE & MEANING engaging in a career, hobby or philanthropic pursuit you love will give your life purpose and meaning LOVE & AFFIRMATION developing relationships that are mutually beneficial and loving will bring joy and goodness HIGHER CONNECTION connecting to the wonder of creation and finding spirituality in a way that works for you (try prayer, meditation, praise and worship) will feed your higher self EMOTIONAL HEALTH checking your emotions, leaving nothing unresolved, practising forgiveness, calming anger, letting go of resentment and experiencing the feeling of happiness regularly will keep you sane Remember that our bodies have their own in built intelligence that is always striving for balance and optimal health. This has been identified in many different healing systems; it is called Life force, Vitalism, Chi or Prana. This force constantly works to restore health. Recognising this force means paying attention. If your body is poisoned in some way or another you might start vomiting. This is the best way the body knows to heal itself. Taking something to stop vomiting might interfere with the body’s natural process and stop effective healing from taking place. Often we get a niggling pain which we choose to ignore and rather take a painkiller when we should be looking more deeply at what is causing the pain. Giving your body more credibility and listening to the clues and signs it is continuously telling you is an excellent way of being more in tune. Naturopathic medicine, in particular, takes into account that symptoms in different organs or different parts of your body, and seemingly unrelated illnesses or other life visit wellnesswarehouse.com for a comprehensive guide to health
In the bigger picture it is important to realise we are connected to the greater world channel as well. If you are aware of how much rubbish you generate and have seen statistics on landfills, yet you don’t separate your trash or recycle or make any effort, you can expect clutter and rubbish to fill your world. If you are lucky enough to have the consciousness to see that our culture of manufacturing, overrefinement and hyper-processing of food, and creation of petroleum laden, artificial environments are not very supportive of our well being, then do something about it. Ask your grocery store to stock the products you want, detox your own life and inspire others to do theirs. What you do personally will have a ripple effect that goes outwards to the world. FirstLine Therapy (FLT) is a specialized therapeutic lifestyle change programme unlike any other in that the FLT system targets the underlying causes of chronic illnesses by incorporating a sensible eating plan, exercise, nutritional supplementation, and stress management. In fact, the following key characteristic is unique to the FLT programme: FLT is not just a weight loss programme • Most programmes are focused on weight while FLT is best used as as first line treatment for common, chronic health problems (eg. high cholesterol, insulin resistance, unhealthy body composition). MORE SEX PLEASE By Glenn-Douglas Haig
Yes I know you’ve heard this before, but have you ever actually committedto having more sex? Like most things that are good for you, you need to do more than just think about them, in order for them to work. Over the last few years my sex life started emulating the Coke life: first Regular, then Diet, then Zero… So I did some research and soon realized that my lack of sexual activity (gross understatement) was literally killing me - I was growing old before my time.Imagine my joy on discovering that good, sweaty sex can boost my skin’s collagen production, stave off age spots, reduce sagging, firm up my muscles, increase my serotonin levels, reduce pain, strengthen my heart and my immune system, reduce stress, make me sleep better, feel better and rescue my ailing prostate – and all of this while having the time of my life! THE CATCH: - because there is always a catch… you have to do this 2-3 times a week for it to have any tangible effect. Now that’s all fine and well for my coupled friends, but what about us singletons? I mean, that’s a helluva lot of drinks to buy to find a sexual partner who is willing to hang around for a night or two, never mind for weeks on end. I fear my sexual health regime is doomed before it’s even begun. HOWEVER: most of the benefits of sexual activity stem from the increased breathing, heart rate and blood flow it creates, so the good old fashioned treadmill is a close second, but… it’s that all-important connection with a lover, the shared intimacy and the explosive orgasm that’s the thing… the true magical ingredient that makes actual sex so much better for you than mere exercise. So come on, stop just thinking about it and deepen your commitment to a healthier you. I challenge all the couples to make time for some serious nookie – even quickies count. Unclutter your bedroom, create a sexy playlist on your smartphone, get a lock for your door if you have kids, and as the classic shoe company says, Just do it! For me - hmmm… maybe I’ll rig up a monitor in front of the rowing machine.

Unlike foods, where you can see the quality before you consume them, your supplements are powders, hidden inside a capsule, out of sight. So there is no way for you to judge their quality.
The SOLAL difference:
At SOLAL we don’t see ourselves as a supplement manufacturer but rather a pharmaceutical company producing high quality natural medicines: • We have a formidable team of medical professionals ensuring we employ the best science and produce the highest quality products • Our team is led by a specialist physician and includes 4 doctors, 7 pharmacists, a dietician, nutritionist, food technologist and a medico-legal advisor • This ensures that we create products using the latest science, with the best combination of ingredients for the best results, with the utmost credibility.
Questions you need to ask your supplement supplier: • Are your supplements formulated by trained medical experts? Our Medical Director holds a Masters in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicines and two of our pharmacists hold Fellowships in Anti-Aging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine, allowing them to employ cutting research in product design • Does your supplement contain weak milled herb powders; or do they contain concentrated herb extracts which are more potent and effective? • How much of the capsule is filled with beneficial active ingredients, and how much is cheap bulking filler ingredients? In both cases the capsule still appears “full”. • Are your supplements manufactured in a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility overseen by pharmacists, thereby preventing contamination and manufacturing mistakes? For example, if an unsupervised raw-material picker misreads microgram (mcg) as milligrams (mg), it would result in a potentially dangerous 1000 fold overdose in each capsule. If not manufactured in a GMP facility, then it means that quality processes have not been inspected, validated and passed.
SOLAL costs more, but we don’t compromise on quality, safety and effectiveness, because your health is your most important asset: • Developed by a team of highly skilled medical professionals including doctors, pharmacists, dieticians/nutritionist and a food technologist • Raw materials and finished products are tested • Made with the least amount of fillers and we use concentrated extracts that are of the finest quality raw materials • Manufactured in GMP facilities according to pharmaceutical quality standards under the supervision of pharmacists • Combines the science of nature with pharmaceutical quality control.

THE WOMAN WITH 100 HUSBANDS
Health reporting that will change the way you think
The woman with a hundred husbands is a catch phrase not a newscast, thank goodness. It is used to describe the Shatavari herb.
C
an you imagine the work involved having a hundred husbands? But it does conjure up images of a super powerful woman. We honour the role that women play from dealing with hormones, keeping love alive, nourishing children and the countless ways they keep things together. SHATAVARI is an Ayurvedic herb renowned as a tonic for the female reproductive system and referred to as ‘the woman with a hundred husbands’. It is also a superb antiinflammatory. Primarily used as a menstrual regulator in dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia and menstrual irregularity it is a uterine tonic. It is also used to tonify female fertility; the unctuous properties increase reproductive fluids, enhancing both conception ability and uterine strength. It can be used to help prevent miscarriage. Shatavari is taken for menopausal symptoms with hot flushes,
irritability, irregular memory and dryness. It is also used for digestion and to calm nerves. Shatavari is a component of the the Viridian Organic Herbal Female Complex. The Herbal Female Complex is a combination of herbs that deals with several body systems to help the body balance female hormones. Shatavari balances hormones and stress; Red Clover with phytoestrogen that helps purify blood; AvenaSativa, a nervine tonic; Sage for night sweats and phytoestrogen; Holy Basil for mental clarity and depression; Fennel and Artichoke for digestion and liver (key underlying causes for hormonal issues - artichoke also helps with water retention).

Who needs Liv.52®? Key Herbs We all Do! Here’s why: We are aware that alcohol, cigarettes, formaldehyde are commonly known toxins to the liver. But there are many more substances that can be toxic to the liver such as foods like fried potatoes, artificial sweeteners, drugs like acetaminophen, antiretroviral & anti-TB drugs and fuel exhaust just to name the few. In year 2006 South Africa alone imported $170 million worth of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides that were packaged for retail. These pesticides are used in almost every facet of our everyday lives; ensuring the quantity and quality of food we eat, to managing the number of rodents and insects in our homes.
All of This Taxes The Liver! Thanks to the liver, body’s natural detoxification facility. The liver is the body’s largest organ and performs various functions every day. It removes harmful toxins from the blood, makes bile to help digest fat, and stores energy. The liver needs a support, too.
Why Liv.52®? • Liv.52® supports health of the liver by restoring liver cell functions • Liv.52® also supports the liver’s functioning when challenged by toxins not just in our food, water and air, but also in forms of medication • Liv.52® does not interfere with medication when taken together • Liv.52® supports liver’s normal ability to burn fat and help support the body’s metabolic processes • Liv.52® helps normalize liver enzyme levels and the liver’s ability to regenerate itself • Liv.52® helps liver rapidly eliminate acetaldehyde, the toxic-by product of alcohol consumed
Capparis spinosa (Caper Bush): Caper Bush helps maintain normal healthy liver function. Experimental studies also confirm Caper Bush assists in preserving the structure and function of liver cells. Cichorium intybus (Chicory): Chicory is an aid for healthy liver and digestive system function. It has antioxidant properties which help the integrity of the liver cells. Solanum nigrum (Black Nightshade): The Black Nightshade plant contains various alkaloids shown to support healthy liver, kidney and bladder function. It has antioxidant properties which helps maintain liver cell integrity. Terminalia arjuna (Arjuna): Arjuna is the herb of choice in Ayurveda for cardiovascular health. Arjuna helps reduce cholesterol levels and supports healthy levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. It has strong antiviral activity, and inhibits viral attachment and penetration. Achillea millefolium (Yarrow): Yarrow has been traditionally used to maintain healthy and normal digestive and urinary system function. It also assists in preserving normal stomach an biligenic system function. Tamarix gallica (Tamarisk): Tamarisk is also sometimes referred to as Salt Cedar, has been traditionally used to maintain healthy and normal liver function.

Can we defend ourselves against cancer? Salvestrols, a phytonutrient group of enzymes is being researched and studied for its potential ability to interact with cancer cells and bring about their demise.
S
cientists have known for a long time that there is a link between diet and cancer. A UK Based Cancer Research team headed by Prof Gerry Potter and Prof Dan Burke may have found the answer to that link in a Phytonutrient group called Salvestrols. Brian A Schaefer published a book called Salvestrols – Nature’s defence against Cancer in 2012 that details the Professors’ remarkable findings. It describes an integrated approach to cancer prevention and therapy based on the remarkable properties of an enzyme named CYP1B1. The interesting thing about this enzyme is that it is highly expressed at the protein level in cancer cells and present only in negligible amounts in normal cells. Burke and Potter discovered that Salvestrols are converted by the CYP1B1 Enzyme found in cancer. This conversion results in a metabolite that can bring about the demise of cancer cells, while not affecting normal, healthy cells.
22
Salvestrols themselves are available in organic fresh produce, correct food choices and key supplementation, although modern food processing methods make it harder to access Salvestrols in our normal food choices. A hundred years ago, food was processed differently and our diets contained a higher level of Salvestrols. It is estimated that our current diet supplies 10% of the Salvestrols it did 100 years ago when only 5% of people got cancer. Today, cancer affects one in three people around the world. In 2020 this figure is estimated to reach one in two. Reduced Salvestrol consumption is attributed to modern diets lacking in fruit and vegetables. In addition the fresh produce we do eat has fewer Salvestrols because of modern agricultural and food processing methods. The ultimate goal in cancer research is to find a way to kill cancer cells present as tumours, precancerous lesions, or circulating cancer cells, and to accomplish this with minimal systemic toxicity.
Research from these findings has resulted in a new approach to an anti-cancer drug which is in the process of being developed by a research pharmaceutical company. Salvestrols have been used by healthcare practitioners internationally for the past decade as part of an integrated approach to cancer prevention and treatment. For more information on Salvestrols visit your local Wellness Warehouse branch. Join us for a talk on Cancer and Nutrition at Wellness Warehouse Kloof Street on 16 March 2013 from 10am - 12pm. Register at info@coyneconsult.com The talk will be given by Vanessa De Ascencao, leading Nutritionist who holds a Masters of Science in Nutrition – (www.vdanutrition.com or 082 499 4155 for more information). Your senses are an imperative part of how you react to and feel about spaces.
Sensibility
Light
Your senses are an imperative part of how you react to and feel about spaces. Get to know yourself so you can create an oasis of unique comfort in your home.
Natural light is healthiest, so as much as you can, allow light to flood into your home. If you don’t have the advantage of a great view or large windows, use mirrors to reflect the natural light you do have, bouncing it into the room to create a sense of space and radiance. Design your lighting well so you can create the right moods and also ensure you have the correct kind of lighting for whatever you’re doing in a particular room. Kitchens and office areas need to be well lit, without shadowing to ensure optimal visibility for tasks. Living areas can be lit using a variety of different light sources for ambience changes – make use of table or floor lamps as well as the central lighting system. Bedrooms need to be a haven of peace, so keep the lighting soft – but ensure you’ve got adequate lighting for bedtime reading to avoid eye strain. Even though digital readers have backlit technology, it’s still not a good idea to read them in the dark.
Smell Smell is intrinsically linked to emotion and studies have shown that fragrances illicit an emotional response far stronger than the smell itself. The emotional response you have to a smell also links to your mood. You automatically associate certain smells to certain events, spaces, circumstances or people. It could be that the smell of petrol mingled with early morning air reminds you of going on family holidays. So, the connotation will be positive and possibly even stress relieving. TIP: Find your favourite fragrance and subtly layer it throughout your home. Use scented candles, linen spray, aroma burners or incense. Don’t overpower your home, though as a stuffy, over-perfumed area will invariably have an adverse effect on your mood.
Spaced out
Create a haven for yourself by engaging all your senses. Infuse your living space with beauty, comfort, light and love to make sure you face each day filled with energy, positivity and a heightened sense of self.
did you know? Smells can transport us back to powerful and emotional memories from the past, far more than sounds can.
24
H
ow your body relates to a specific space determines how comfortable you feel in that space. It may seem intangible, but walking into a home where you feel instantly at ease has a lot to do with proportions and how the space is designed and utilised. Play around with the layout of your furniture and don’t be afraid of unconventional layouts – couches don’t have to hug walls, they can be pushed away from the wall, offering a cosier space that actually appears bigger. Your specific lifestyle should dictate what you do in each room of your home – if you have children, you might want to create a playroom, with a more formal area for when you have guests; but in the same home, the playroom area could become everything you need to live life well
a gym or an office for someone whose lifestyle requires that instead. Walk through your home and spend some time imagining what each space would be best suited to, ignoring convention and only concentrating on what works for you.
What’s in a smell?
While every individual responds to smells differently, some scents are universal in their effect: • Peppermint Is invigorating, keeping you alert (one study showed that people exercising were more energetic after being exposed to peppermint scent) • Jasmine encourages sleep, as well as heightened awareness the following day (studies have found that it increases the brain waves associated with deep sleep) • Vanilla curbs sweet cravings – so if you’re trying to lose weight, instead of ordering dessert, take a good sniff of vanilla and your brain’s sweet signals will be satiated.
We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us. Winston Churchill
how your senses react to spaces >
Sight Surrounding yourself with beauty instantly eases the mind. Light and colour play a major part in this sense.
TIP: Keep it green by replacing those old light bulbs with energy savings ones or LEDs, and use solar powered light sources for outside areas.
Delhi, Udaipur, Varanasi, Kashmir, Dharamsala, and the Dalai Lama's home in McCloudganj.
Colour Colours are vital to setting a mood and reflecting your style. Don’t be afraid of experimenting with bold colours, but if you do, create one feature wall in a room with a bold colour, keeping the other walls muted and relatively plain – a riot of colour will engage your senses too much, creating a feeling of clutter. Pick up your feature colour in cushions and throws (these are also easy to replace from time to time if you feel like a quick change).
Istanbul's Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace, Kusadasi, Ephasus, Cappidocia, Konya and Rumi, Troy and Pamukkale.
Colours’ effect on your mood: • Blue is the most productive colour and is great for an office • Green represents health and tranquillity – good for bedrooms • Yellow increases metabolism and energy – a great colour for kitchens • Lavender is calming and works well in living areas and entrance ways • Red encourages appetite, so if you’re a budding gourmand, try this in your dining area Colour in certain places has the great value of making the outlines and structural planes seem more energetic. - Antonio Gaudi

Don’t exercise because you have to. Train because you love it, and because it is part of your life.

CrossFit is about measuring results. It is an evidence-based fitness programme and everything is measured. As stated by CrossFit Inc. “It is our observation that men will die for points. Using whiteboards as scoreboards, keeping accurate scores and records, running a clock, and precisely defining the rules and standards for performance, we not only motivate unprecedented output, but also derive both relative and absolute metrics at every workout. This data has important value well beyond motivation.”

CrossFit is also an education about movement, fitness, nutrition and community. Community is important. CrossFit knows that harnessing the natural camaraderie, competition and fun of sport, creates an intensity and passion that is difficult to match.

It is a powerful training regime. “If you’re not familiar with CrossFit: they are crazy. They do intense short workouts of functional movements — burpees and barbell thrusters and pullups and sled pushing and running 400 metres and box jumps and throwing a medicine ball up against a wall and barbell deadlifts and kettlebell swings and any other crazy things the coach can think of.
Even though it is hugely intense, CrossFit is not only a training programme for the fittest, fastest and strongest men and women on Earth, but also for any committed individual, regardless of experience. CrossFit has used their same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease to housewives, pre-schools and in physical therapy.

Magical thinking
A 2012 study on four to six year old children examined the effects on their creative thinking. They used clips from Harry Potter to do this. The children were in two groups, one watched a 15 minute clip that included magic while the other watched a clip that had no magical scenes. After viewing the respective clips, the children who watched the magic were significantly more creative than the children who didn’t. Researcher Eugene Subbotsky said, “Magical thinking enables children to create fantastic imaginary worlds, and in this way enhances children’s capacity to view the world and act upon it from multiple perspectives.”
"
Riding off into the sunset isn’t an end, but a beginning. It’s this understanding that will determine value or detriment.
Children & fantasy Fantasy is an essential part of a child’s upbringing and should form part of their educational background.
did you know?
The term ‘lie-to-children’ relates to a simplification of a concept to help a child (or anyone learning a new subject) to understand concepts. It’s used often in education – usually, children or learners discard the previous ‘lie’ as they learn the more complex aspects of the concept. In Buddhism, the term Upaya is used. Translated it mean ‘expedient means’. Plato used something similar called, ‘the noble lie’.
32
B
ut positive fantasy should be distinguished from untruths that could confuse them or bring them an unhealthy or incorrect perception of life. We explore the balance between encouraging imagination and offering up a wrong perspective on reality. Take the subject of relationships; most children grow up listening to fantasy stories of princesses and white knights. Is it truthful to tell little girls that they will be rescued by a knight in shining armour or that they will meet a husband and live happily ever after? Is this a functional part of the cultural passage of life or is it setting them up for disappointment and unrealistic expectations? In most fairytales, danger
abounds, but ultimately good trumps evil and there is a happy ending. Some are horrific – think of Hansel and Gretel about to be eaten by an evil witch. Evil stepmothers and fairy godmothers are scattered throughout yet everything is bathed in rosy light at the end. What we forget to add, is that riding off into the sunset isn’t an end, but a beginning. It’s this understanding that will determine value or detriment.
How you handle fantasy will affect your child’s view of the future, and life in general. Balance is always important and helping them to understand consequences of actions will set them up to be more aware of reality than simply telling them like it is.
Draw the line
An out and out lie will put you in a precarious position with your child. Think carefully before engaging in any line of untruthful communication and understand what the consequences may be.
Encourage creativity
Fantastical stories and adventures of the mind will encourage creative thought in your child. Here are some examples: • Pretend to speak to your child’s new toy so you can hear its name. • Describe clouds bumping into each other during a thunderstorm – personify each cloud and imagine with your child how silly they are being by not looking where they’re going.
Liar liar
But what about bald-faced lies? We all teach children that lying is bad and a punishable offense, but we all lie to one extent or another (even if its an innocent one like the ice cream van makes music when it has no ice cream left). The general consensus is that lying can be constructive if used carefully, but there has to be a balance between what you do and what you say (for example, telling your children not to drink alcohol while you are obviously enjoying one too many isn’t going to come off very well). If you are going to tell your child to ‘do what I say and not what I do’, respect them enough to offer a truthful explanation as to why.
• Chat about the magical properties of vegetables, how special powers are infused in certain colours (green veg gives special strength, orange veg offers super vision, etc). Let your child understand there is an element of tongue-in-cheek with these fantasies and use them as ways to encourage belief and adherence to your own values and morals.
SOFTSOAPING The Tooth fairy story serves to make what could be a highly traumatic event (losing a tooth) into something that’s an adventure, with a reward at the end. This fabrication can ease some of the stress of growing up. Of course you could tell your child in advance that their teeth will fall out (one by one) and that it’s a natural process, enabling them to grow bigger, better and stronger teeth. Telling the truth may prevent a reaction when they realise you’ve actually lied to them but doesn’t carry the element of imagination and fun. The same applies to Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny - remember to infuse an element of fantastical story telling in your tone and actions so your child knows it is fantasy – encourage them to embellish the story to enhance their own creative thinking processes. Lies are easy to tell or create and some don’t even seem like lies. For example, it’s obvious you would want to give your baby the impression of a warm, safe and peaceful world where nothing bad will ever happen. That doesn’t sound like a lie at all, rather good parenting practise. But what if you tried to protect your child into his or her teens in the same way you do a newborn baby? Perpetuating a comforting lie beyond its usefulness becomes damaging. Any lie you tell your child should be contextual, useful and have an ‘expiry date’. Finding the balance between truth, lies and creative fantasy is all down to your individual values, and as long as you walk your talk, show your children integrity and honesty in your actions, a little fantasising and a few white lies will develop their creative ability.

BONDING WITH BABY Babies, even when in the womb can socially interact with mothers. Some mothers are delighted to discover they can playfully interact with their growing baby, one mother said when she pushed against her belly, the baby pushed back. This is not unusual; babies in the womb are responsive to mothers, especially in the emotional realm. Pregnant mothers can connect with their growing babies by speaking to them and sending them loving affirmations. Speaking to them about how excited you are to be pregnant, how loved and wanted they are is calming and reassuring. If you are stressed you can explain to them that it has nothing to do with them. When people think or feel good thoughts towards something it has an energetic effect. When connecting with your baby ask if it needs anything from you. Be open to what comes; see if you can determine an answer and if there is anything you can do towards that answer.
From womb to world
High and dry
From twenty weeks of pregnancy, a baby can hear sounds through mum's tummy. The Mexican Bola is a chime ball worn on a long necklace by pregnant mum and placed low on the tummy where the baby is carried. The calming melody it produces while mum goes about her daily life relaxes the baby. When baby is born the chimes will trigger an association from when baby was in safely in the womb.
Bathing is made so much easier when you have the right products. An ingenious rinse cup has a flexible top that fits snugly against baby’s head making sure no water gets into her eyes. The Apron Bath towel attaches to mum so she can use both hands to lift the baby out the bath.

Community support earthchild
A local NGO started at the beginning of 2007, the Earthchild Project focuses on the holistic development of children, teachers, schools and communities.
T
heir team is young, dynamic and positive. They live what they teach and think and work out the box. They are extremely passionate and committed to creating a new generation of healthy, confident, conscious and responsible earthchildren. What do they do? The Earthchild Project’s aim is to create meaningful and sustainable change by providing practical skills on how to live a more balanced and fulfilling life with a focus on self-awareness, health and wellness, and the environment. What does it mean practically? Earthchild Facilitators work together with the teachers, parents, partnering organizations and volunteers to run the following programmes: Schools Programme: Weekly yoga classes, hiking clubs, organic vegetable gardens, worm farms, holiday programmes, environmentally educational outings and camps, healthy tuck shops and more! The Living Classroom: Classroom worm farms, container vegetable gardens, yoga classes, vision boards and affirmation cards.
36
Teachers’ Retreats: Yoga and meditation, healthy living workshops, massage treatments, documentary films & guest speakers, self-development and team building.
Where are they based? Earthchild Project is based in eight Cape Town schools in Khayelitsha and Lavender Hill. During 2012 they worked with over 3000 children and 150 teachers.
But why? In order for children to develop into well-adjusted, happy, healthy, successful adults, a balanced education, which encompasses social, physical, emotional and spiritual needs in additional to academic welfare, is required. This situation is particularly relevant to the thousands of children who live in informal settlements, at risk of remaining trapped in the cycle of poverty and inequality which has prevailed in their families for generations.
How can you get involved? • Become a volunteer – contact Linci Abrahams linci@earthchildproject.org/ 073 423 9678 • Make a donation • Join the Earthchild Project family on Facebook and Twitter • General contact information: Janna Kretzmar info@earthchildproject.org 083 4099185 www.earthchildproject.org Get involved and help create a new generation of conscious, confident and responsible earthchildren.
The Earthchild Project’s strategy to respond to this situation is to develop a ‘whole’ child by providing practical skills for life.
Contribute to Earthchild by doing a yoga class in the Green Point Park. 'Practice in the Park' is on 24th February 2013 and is a one hour yoga class taught by some of the top teachers in the country. The organisers are expecting 500 people this year. The event is from 5h00 to 7h00pm and promises to be an amazing experience. In 2012 the first 'Practice in the Park' was a great success with over 300 people attending. Just show up with your yoga mat and water bottle.
From the earthchildren…
“I love yoga because it keeps me fresh. When I wake, I do yoga every day and it helps me with my home stresses. One day I want to be a yoga teacher.” Dunyiswa, Grade 7, Khayelitsha

relationship
eco mom & baby
Plan a midnight feast. There’s nothing quite as invigorating as doing something a little naughty or silly.
Generally, people who really engage in life are the happiest and have stronger relationships. Get your lust for life into full gear by exploring the world around you and acting on things that peak your interest.
HERE IS HOW:
Keep the spark alive
Understanding what it takes to keep romance alive long after the first flush of rose-coloured falling in love is over, isn’t difficult, but it does take some effort.
T
HINK FIRST
The first step in re-igniting the fire begins in your head. Think back to all the little things your partner did, said or dreamed about that attracted you in the first place. Concentrating on the positive aspects of your partner will keep you from focusing on their foibles or things that have become irritating to you. According to Dr Susan Whitbourne, people in good relationships engage in what’s known as ‘sentiment override’ where they remember more of the favourable experiences than unfavourable ones. This isn’t quite the same as ignoring your partner’s shortcomings, but rather choosing to focus on the positives. Remain mindful of your partner when you’re not together. If it’s a case of out of sight,
38
out of mind, you may need to do some deep thinking about the veracity of your love. Practise thinking about your partner throughout the day (this doesn’t mean you have to moon about daydreaming all day). Cognitively make a decision to think about, care about and ever so slightly obsess about your partner in a positive and caring way.
HERE IS HOW: • Write down a list of positive attributes about your partner and why you fell in love with them. Get them to do the same and take some time out to share those thoughts. • When you’re apart, contact your partner at least once a day just to say hi. • If you find yourself thinking negatively about your partner, switch your thoughts to a positive attribute and at the same time, recognise you also have irritating habits.
D
IFFERENT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE Engaging in a challenging or different experience together is a sure-fire way to bring you closer. That’s not to say you need to head off for a first-time bungee jump together, especially if the very thought scares you witless. But, instead, find activities you can both enjoy and that challenge you mentally or physically. This encourages time spent together as well. After the first flush of falling in love, many couples go their separate ways in terms of hobbies or areas of interest. If one of you spends all their time watching sport on TV while the other potters around in the garden, something’s not right. Make an effort to spend time together and show interest in each other’s passions.
Selected items not available at all stores. Items not listed at a particular store can be ordered for you or bought online.
• Find a common interest you both have. For example, if music is a passion, spend the day together in a music store listening to different versions of a favourite song. • Learn together. Exploring something new to both of you will bring you closer. Pick up a recipe book on a style of food you both like and learn to master your favourite dishes. You can celebrate by hosting a dinner party to show off your now-found culinary skills. • Play together. There’s nothing like a bit of competition and exercise to heat up your senses, so engage in a game of tennis, miniature golf, or even a video game that gets you going. • Give back – find a charity that resonates with you and volunteer to help out together. • Decide together to not say no for two months. No matter what invitation comes your way, say yes. This will open up new opportunities to meet people and see each other in a different light.
S
AY IT, DO IT
You may feel warm and fuzzy towards your partner, but a surprising number of people don’t actually express how they feel. Saying I love you everyday may become a bit tired – rather insert loving dialogue into your daily communication. For example, tell your partner they’re looking particularly good today, or that you love it when they do this or that. Also, a little touch every so often won’t ever go awry – this isn’t about sex, but just about warm affection. A touch on the arm, a quick hug or a soft kiss on the cheek will help you to focus on each other and build your trust. Touch is extraordinarily important and encourages the production of oxytocin, the love and trust hormone. Communication is vital to any good relationship, so make time each day to talk about any small issues that may arise. Concentrate on being honest and ensure you listen carefully and give each other a chance to speak. This will
also cut off any resentments before they have a chance to build, making you feel lighter and happier in general.
HERE IS HOW: • Write a love letter and stash it in a place your partner is sure to find it (like their underwear drawer). • Practise never leaving a room without first touching or kissing your partner. Be mindful of their body in your space and see how often you can brush up against them ‘by mistake’ – this will make both of you more aware of each other and may just spark a serendipitous romp. • Set up a weekly time slot without any distractions from phones, TV, other people or children. Even if it is half an hour a week, make this time your date for communicating.
U
NDERCOVER
Nondescript, gentle touches are bound to spark the desire for more. Sex is vital to healthy relationships – it’s about sharing a close intimacy together and maintaining or building trust. In today’s world, busyness and fatigue contribute greatly to diminishing sexual activity. It’s difficult to get back to intimacy if too much time lapses, so good communication is important.
HERE IS HOW: • Take a bath or shower together, get to know each other’s bodies in a new way. Wash each other’s hair or feet. This doesn’t have to lead to sex, but will help you get in touch with each other intimately. • Set up a date night for once a month (it’s more interesting to choose a date, such as the first of every month, rather than a day – this will give you a wider range of opportunities). Take turns to choose what you’ll do on that day (from having a picnic in your own garden to a night on the town dressed to the nines). • Plan a midnight feast. There’s nothing quite as invigorating as doing something a little naughty or silly. Create a veritable feast and sneak into the kitchen at midnight. The quietness of the night and sense of childish delight may just spark a little romance. • Speak up. Again, there’s nothing like a good dose of communication – if you’re too bashful to say it out loud, write a sexy note or sms to your partner, inviting them to a night of passion.

GREEN LOVING
We talk a lot about love. We talk about loving ourselves and loving our sweethearts. But the world is moving to a more powerful love. One Love. This love stretches far beyond just us, to our communities and to the planet. So for the month of February and on, think beyond the self and look for ways to be more loving to the environment and people around you. For your sweetheart, here are some alternative ideas to heat up the love.
FLOWERS -
Instead of flowers, buy a potted plant or small fruit tree that will last for a long time and can even be replanted in the garden.
CHOCOLATES -
Buy Fairtrade, organic chocolates. Not only are they even more delicious and much healthier for you, but also many communities benefit from your purchases.
CARDS
- Make your own, personalized heartwarming card from recycled paper. Use clippings from magazines, dried flowers, old buttons and other recycled gems to make the perfect card.
ROMANCE - Instead of the standard restaurant reservation, take your loved one on a hike up the mountain or into the forest and prepare a gourmet, organic picnic. It’s more romantic being out in nature and under the stars and shows how much effort you have put into your relationship. It’s all in the detail. COMMUNITY -
Find a charity that is close to your heart and give something worth more than money: your time. Get involved and show how much you care.

I
t is one of the fastest growing techniques in Spa’s worldwide. Once I tried it, it became my favourite. The stones are not only a massage instrument, but carry spiritual energies designed to maximise the healing experience. We check with the WellSpa on some of the details.
HOT STONE THERAPY After proving highly popular in the United States, then Europe, Hot Stone Therapy has been equally popular in South Africa.
Looking back to ancient civilisations we see the practice of using therapeutic stones therapeutic processes amongst amongst various cultures. Revival of this practice, however, comes from Hawaiian tradition. In Hawaii, stones are given great respect, Hawaiians believe they come from the very heart of nature and have important spiritual and cultural significance. Therapists have a strong bond with their stones and look after them carefully, the practitioners insist that special permission is obtained before any stones can be removed from the island. They also believe that the spirits of their deceased are present in the elements of the earth and need to be treated very carefully. Stones used during the massage vary in colour, shape and size. Many different size stones may be used to fit and flow with the natural curves of the body. Usually flat and smooth, some pebble like, others more like gems, the stones are worked across the body by the therapist in particular patterns, movements and techniques. Selected stones are strategically placed on the meridians, chakras (energy centres) or aligned along the spine, generating healing responses throughout the body. Kept warm in a slow cooker (similar to the electrical cookers used to warm rice), the stones retain heat allowing the muscles in the body to relax and absorb the heat, creating a very deep tissue massage. Taking up stone therapy as a career has benefits for the practitioner as well. Besides being such an exciting way to bring about deep relaxation it also protects the therapist from strain and injuries to wrists and thumbs that can be encountered from traditional massage. Combining the massage, the heat and strategic placement of the stones, brings about a deep meditative state, far beyond the physical experience of typical massage. Other benefits include relief for stiff and sore muscles, a complete de-stress and relaxation experience, and balancing energy. The heaviness of the stones adds a

feeling of physical security, with the smooth texture creating a unique sensation. In some cases and where there is pain in the muscles, cold stones are sometimes used. Alternating hot and cold stones has the added benefit of increasing circulation.
INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE Often overlooked as a target for massage, the head is full of pressure points and pleasure buttons. After experiencing all the health benefits of Indian massage (never mind the relaxation and pleasure factor) you may just get hooked. Indian head massage can be practiced anywhere and on anyone. To relieve pain, tension and stress almost immediately. Improving blood circulation and oxygenating the cells, the various techniques also have the effect of flushing out physical and emotional toxins. Using the hands and forearms, the therapist uses many different motions such as kneading, pummeling, rubbing, squeezing and stroking to activate pressure points. Techniques seem endless, some sporting names such as windscreen wipers, hammering, raindrop, fanning, ironing, clamping, thumb slide, ear pinching and tweaking, palm-rolling and holding. Most of the movements used today have been passed down and adapted from the Ayurvedic and Unani healing systems. In fact, apparently our word for shampoo derives from an Indian massage technique called Champi. With grooming so much a part of Indian society, the ritual of brushing and oiling the hair allowed Indian women to develop many different blends of oils and treatments. Designed to strengthen and condition the hair, these oils include almond, coconut, mustard, olive and sesame. Sometimes mixed with herbs, yoghurt or ghee, different blends are often used in traditional head massage. They are carefully selected and chosen according to whether an invigorating or relaxing result is required, or according to the seasons. Families in India may have their own special recipes that are passed down through the generations. Even Gandhi had his own specific blend of oil and herbs known as Ghandiji that is still available today through Indian grocers. Another important oil is the Kulanji or black seed oil. This oil apparently www.wellnesswarehouse.com
takes on the intention of the healer and so can be used for either stimulating or calming massage. Preferably mixed with grapeseed oil in summer or sweet almond oil in winter, it can also be used on its own. Twenty or thirty minutes is recommended for a full treatment. This often includes the upper back and arms, shoulders, neck, scalp and face. Improving scalp circulation encourages the flow of nutrients to the hair follicles nourishing and revitalizing hair growth. Absolutely no equipment is needed except a chair (preferably with no arms) so that the participant can be seated. Indian Head massage enhances the five senses, improves memory, eases mental and emotional stress and promotes clear thinking. It is highly recommended for headaches, insomnia, tinnitis, vertigo and depression.

Her ideology is simple and easy to follow. Teens will be empowered to cook and prepare food they love and is good for them. The workshop also exposes the dangers of processed food and gives strong guidelines that will prevent the growing problem of childhood obesity. Feed your child better from a young age. What we feed our children now literally shapes their bodies and health for their futures. Learn how to feed them better - and make them feel better.
