Since AD 909

Our Strategic Vision is driven by our School Motto: Esto Quod Es. This has been our Motto since at least the 19th century when the School was re-founded. But the words of the Motto are very much older, taken as they are from the personal motto of Aelfric, one of the Anglo Saxon Archbishops of Canterbury, who himself was inspired by the words of the Ancient Greek lyric poet, Pindar. Our adopted translation ‘Be what you are’ succinctly represents our School’s belief in the individuality of each pupil. However, we are also very conscious that school should also be about discovering who you are. Our purpose must be to equip all pupils with the ability to enjoy a lifetime of discovery and to become the best they can be.

Pupils have been educated at Wells Cathedral School for over a thousand years since its origins as a Chorister School. Today, Wells is a family-orientated co-educational boarding and day school for 2-18 year olds, which provides an all-round education alongside world-class Specialist Music and Chorister training. We deliver an encouraging and ambitious education for every child based on what we like to refer to as our ‘CARE’ values: Creativity, Aspiration, Responsibility and Endeavour.

8

OUR VALUES

9

We believe in embracing the power of imagination, innovation and individual talent. Together we aim to create a culture of artistic excellence where we value human ingenuity and the Arts in an increasingly technological world. We recognise the spiritual and wellbeing benefits that an engagement with your creative self brings, and we actively encourage pupils to have an original approach to all that they do.

10

We motivate our pupils to set ambitious goals and have high expectations of themselves. We inspire excellence through unrivalled opportunity and high quality teaching and coaching. We encourage our pupils to have appropriate awareness of self and others while demonstrating boundless curiosity.

11

We believe that all pupils should have personal ownership of learning and behaviour. We help them to understand their responsibilities and duties within the School, and by extension the local community and the wider world. We expect all pupils to respect and care for all, lead by example and have the highest standards of honesty and trustworthiness.

12

We encourage our pupils to do their very best in all things, in the classroom and beyond. We believe that all pupils should try new things and discover new passions, participating and building resilience through engagement. We recognise the value of determined effort and participation before winning and success.

The city was a Roman settlement and later became an important centre under the Saxons when King Ine of Wessex founded a minster church in 704. In 909, the minster church became the centre of the new diocese for Somerset, and the School was founded. Construction on the magnificent present cathedral began in 1175, and the famous Wells clock - considered to be the second oldest clock mechanism in Britain, and probably in the world - was made in around 1390. The famous market, which remains popular today, also dates back to the 12th century.

HISTORY OF WELLS

After the City of London, Wells is the smallest city in England. Wells has a rich history, beginning as a holy place that took its name from the springs in what are now the grounds of The Bishop’s Palace.

In very recent times, Wells has gained fame as the filming location for the British comedy film Hot Fuzz.

LITTLE WELLIES NURSERY Open all year round and offering wraparound care, Little Wellies Nursery (ages 2-4) prides itself on building an excellent foundation for life. We know each child individually and prioritise their emotional wellbeing through diverse, busy and enriching activities. Children can join our Duckling Class, where we accept children from age 2, and then move into our Cygnet Class which the children join in their pre-school year. Transition is a process, not an event, and when the time comes for our children to move onto Robin Class (Reception) they are both confident and ready for school.

19

20

SPARKING CURIOSITY In Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2), we support our pupils to develop their thinking skills and a love of learning by offering a creative and ambitious curriculum within an inspiring environment. We give children space, support and encouragement to explore their passions, discover who they are and become the best they can be. We recognise that young children live in the moment and that the opportunities available to them can spark a curiosity that we aim to ignite. We value the children’s interests and weave them into an engaging curriculum that gives equal weight to all subjects.

21

22

CREATIVE CURRICULUM Our curriculum, which puts creativity at the heart of all we do, has been recognised on multiple occasions for its impact on our young learners. Recently, we were awarded Pre-Prep of the Year (Commended) in the Independent School of the Year Awards. We provide endless opportunities for developing creativity and imagination through music, drama, movement, art, craft, sculpture, role-play and social and cultural experiences, many of which are delivered by subject specialists. Our children flourish by taking part in our many performance opportunities and become well rounded, accomplished individuals.

23

24

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM We embed fine and gross motor skills and coordination across our busy curriculum and active environment. Alongside our specialist provision for Games, Swimming, Drama and Dance, pupils also enjoy our wide variety of active clubs. In addition to our exciting after-school clubs, we have flexible and comprehensive wrap-around childcare provision available for our pupils, including Breakfast and Supper Clubs. We are fortunate to have a stunning setting with quality facilities to match, with teaching extending to our inspiring and beautiful outdoor classroom. During Forest School, children are encouraged to understand risks, learn the importance of boundaries and develop vital skills including communication and collaboration.

CITY CONNECTIONS The historic cities of Bath and Bristol are within an hour's drive away. Both cities enjoy a vibrant, contemporary cultural scene, with theatre, comedy, live music, museums and festivals. Bristol has an eclectic range of architectural styles and a rich maritime history. Home to the artist Banksy, visitors will find impressive street art on almost every corner. The city’s commitment to sustainability and the environment made Bristol the first British city to receive the award of European Green Capital. Bath is an elegant city full of traditional heritage. While the Roman Baths take a central role in its history, Bath also boasts iconic Georgian architecture, including the Royal Crescent, the Circus and the Theatre Royal.

THE PREP SCHOOL

29

We will give your child opportunities to develop their talents as well as to discover new ones

30

The Prep School (Years 3-6) shares the same site as the Senior School and feels like a small family in itself whilst also being part of the larger whole-school community. We believe that to function happily and successfully as a family, each person needs to have a strong sense of resilience, resourcefulness, risktaking and curiosity. We strive to ensure that this ethos becomes second nature, so when your child eventually leaves us they will be a well-rounded, independent and ambitious individual, equipped with the skills needed to embrace the new challenges of life in the Senior School and beyond. We will give your child opportunities to develop their talents as well as to discover new ones - whether it’s playing an instrument, excelling at sport or creating an artistic masterpiece. While talents should be nurtured, we believe that it is every bit as important for your child to simply have fun and enjoy what they like doing most - and, perhaps, get really good at it! We also encourage them to tackle new things... who knows what interests and talents they may discover?

31

32

STIMULATING CURRICULUM Our academic ambition is to ensure our pupils are stimulated and challenged to develop a lifelong passion for learning. Our small class sizes allow your child to benefit from plenty of individual attention and a truly tailored experience. We offer a broad and intellectually-stimulating environment where children are given space, support and encouragement to explore their passions and are inspired to think for themselves and develop their own opinions through reflection and debate. Our fully-rounded curriculum is driven by curiosity with lessons that vary in terms of style, content and breadth; we find that this varied approach helps every child to achieve their potential. Pupils lead the way in lessons, which adds value and depth to what and how they learn. We want to prepare our Wellensians for the rapidly changing world, ensuring they have the skills and ability not just to succeed but to thrive.

33

34 34

VALUING CREATIVITY We believe that creativity and curiosity underpin everything and that the arts are vital companions to academic life. Our subject specialists will help your child to develop their skills and ensure that their interests play an important part in the school day. Renowned for our creative and performing arts opportunities, your child will access visiting artists in workshops, participate in trips to theatres, museums and art galleries, be involved with national arts projects and much more. We are a well-known and highly-regarded Specialist Music School, uniquely embedded within a proper all round school. Whatever your child’s musical ability or interest, they cannot fail to experience the truly magical influence of our musical heritage and benefit from the excellent musical provision that our Prep School provides.

35

36

SPORT FOR ALL We believe that sport is not just about keeping fit and having fun; it instils an ethos of team building, confidence, leadership, and discipline in everyone who embraces it, which is why we have such a strong sporting tradition. Our curriculum aims to give your child a love of being active for life; your child will enjoy four hours of sport a week, all taught by fully qualified coaches and PE specialists. Our outstanding sporting facilities accommodate the whole school, so your child will be able to swim in our covered swimming pool, play hockey on our AstroTurf pitch, dance in our purpose-designed studio, play tennis and netball on dedicated courts, play rugby and football on our pitches, and have PE lessons in our sports hall. Whatever their ability, your child will get the chance to play competitively with events throughout the year, including many interschool fixtures.

37

38

BEYOND THE CURRICULUM Alongside our broad curriculum, our provision focuses on the achievement and wellbeing of the whole child, nurturing curiosity and a global outlook fit for the 21st Century. Our children are immersed in a range of academic, creative, natural, technological and sporting experiences and, above all, given the opportunity to nurture a joy for learning and play. Our schedule of lunchtime and after school clubs provides further opportunities for your child to explore a wide range of activities and educational experiences. We have also incorporated flexible and comprehensive wrap-around childcare provision for our pupils, including Breakfast and Supper Clubs. Our delicious, healthy meal options help make both the morning and after school hustle and bustle less stressful for you and your child.

A VIBRANT CULTURE Wells is a vibrant city and, although it may be small, there is always something happening. The twice-weekly markets are very popular with locals as well as tourists. Annually, the City of Wells hosts events including festivals of literature, food, comedy, contemporary art, English country gardens and film. The world’s most famous festival of all, Glastonbury, is only up the road. For theatre and music productions, our very own state-of-the-art performing centre, Cedars Hall, hosts both school productions and concerts as well as professional artists. The Bishop’s Palace (pictured) also hosts a number of public events including outdoor theatre, garden workshops, crafting, storytelling and exhibitions.

42

THE SENIOR SCHOOL

43

44 44

The Senior School (Years 7-11) provides a smooth transition for pupils joining from the Prep School, and a warm welcome for the many pupils who join us from other schools. You are encouraged to develop greater independence as you mature into a young adult. We encourage an adventurous environment that inspires confident, successful learning for life, and we nurture leadership through a rigorous and competitive, supportive and accepting culture throughout the School. You will have increasingly greater academic, creative and sporting challenges and be invited to participate in as many clubs, societies, trips and social activities that you think you can handle. We widely communicate and celebrate personal achievements. Our alumni have had experiences some could only dream of: from touring Hong Kong to climbing to Mount Everest’s Base Camp. We can assure you that you will get out of Wells as much as you put in. Our examination results are excellent, however we believe they are the outcome of a good education and not its only target.

45

We developed our academic programme with enrichment in mind

46

ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT We match the pace of progress to individual ability, but as you move through the School you will take responsibility for your own academic and personal development. You will be able to organise your learning to follow a direction that suits your needs and strengths. In Year 10 you will choose four GCSE options, including a Modern Foreign Language, in addition to the core subjects of Mathematics, English Language and Literature, Science and a short course in Religious Studies. You will also take courses in PSHE, PE, Games and Activities. Our Specialist Maths scheme is designed to stretch our most gifted and passionate mathematicians.

47

48

ARTISTIC ENDEAVOURS The creative arts continue to be a focal interest in the Senior School, and our curriculum focuses on a freeing of the spirit to allow you to engage in creative and imaginative thought, whether in Maths or Music, Science or Drama, Languages or Dance. We place an emphasis on freedom and human growth with no limits set on what you can or should achieve. We provide a framework to meet the rapidly changing needs of society to give you a brilliant foundation for life. With our specialist teaching and exceptional opportunities on offer, musicians, artists and drama enthusiasts of all abilities can let their creativity flow and develop their talents in a supportive, fun atmosphere.

49

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES We recognise the importance of including outdoor pursuits to reinforce the excellent education that takes place inside the classroom. Learning through adventure, preferably in the outdoors, is one of the most effective ways to develop character traits, such as resilience, resourcefulness and self-confidence. For pupils in Year 9 and above, our thriving Combined Cadet Force provides countless opportunities for our pupils to take responsibility and develop skills such as leadership, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance. From Year 9 you will be encouraged to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. This individual challenge will encourage you to undertake exciting and rewarding activities to complement your other endeavours.

50

51

52

SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES Sport plays a vital role at Wells, and we will build your existing skills with a wide range of coaching by dedicated sports teachers and professional experts. We compete against other schools on a highly competitive circuit, and we also organise inter-house events, enabling pupils of all abilities to enjoy participating in sport. Our main sports are athletics, cricket, cross-country, football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming and tennis, but we also provide opportunities for a much wider range, including badminton, basketball, climbing, fencing and table tennis to name just a few! We offer additional opportunities for pupils who have the potential to make an outstanding contribution to sport through our Sports Scholars Programme. This programme is designed to help Scholars to progress their sport and advance through our three tiers: Aspirational, Performance and Elite. We have excellent facilities: a year-round swimming pool, a sports hall with a fitness suite and a climbing wall, a dance studio, tennis and netball courts, a multi-use games area and an AstroTurf pitch. Our extensive grounds include a 3.5 acre athletics field and several sports pitches, including one of the finest cricket pitches in the county.

53

54

THE MENDIP HILLS The Mendip Hills lie to the north of Wells. The central and western Mendips were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1972. The main habitat on these hills is grassland, with some arable agriculture. To the north of the Mendip Hills is the Chew Valley and to the south are broad valleys that drain into the Somerset Levels. The extensive network of caves near Wells including Cheddar and Wookey Hole (pictured) - as well as the limestone hills, underground rivers and gorges - including Cheddar Gorge and Ebbor Gorge - provide endless opportunities for our pupils’ outdoor pursuits, including caving, rock climbing, orienteering and abseiling. Our pupils have opportunities to sail at Cheddar Reservoir through our Combined Cadet Force.

55

56

THE SIXTH FORM

57

You will enjoy a sense of greater freedom and independence

58

The Sixth Form at Wells creates a brilliant foundation for life: a time of endeavour, challenges and possibilities. You will enjoy a sense of greater freedom and independence, but we will encourage you to become self-motivated, expect you to work hard, and support you in learning from any mistakes. Sixth Formers are leaders of the school community, and you should see yourself as a role model for younger pupils in your work and everything else you do. Everyone in the Sixth Form has the opportunity to lead, either by joining one of our many committees or by taking up one of our student leadership positions. The social calendar is busy and rewarding, kindling a strong sense of camaraderie and lifelong friendships. Alongside theatre trips, parties and pizza evenings, you can join in activities that focus on career development, leadership, teamwork and cultural awareness, enabling you to contribute to the community, both in School and beyond.

59

60

LIFE AFTER WELLS The vast majority of our pupils progress to some form of Higher Education. We offer advice to help you make informed choices that affect possibilities for further study. Our Head of Sixth Form and UCAS Advisor can help guide you through this crucial time in your education. Most of our Specialist Musicians continue their musical studies at top music colleges. Our music staff have well-developed relationships with the leading colleges and conservatoires throughout the world and will be able to help you to choose your next path. We organise an open morning for Lower Sixth parents on the subject of higher education, which includes our staff as well as admissions tutors from various universities.

61

Our approach is innovative and different 62

INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM Wells is at the forefront of Sixth Form curriculum development. Our approach is innovative and different with pupils being encouraged to adopt an independent, more collegiate style of working. We have chosen consciously to make A levels the academic course of the Sixth Form with additional opportunities to work for the Extended Project Qualification. Our pupils (apart from some Specialist Musicians), start with four subjects to give wider breadth and more flexibility. We believe this approach provides the best structure for specialisation and breadth, and we know that universities, music colleges and employers love it!

63

SPORT AND FITNESS We continue with our wide range of sporting opportunities into the Sixth Form and offer you the chance to take advantage of our excellent facilities and participate in matches. By taking part in sport in the Sixth Form, you can test and improve your leadership and team-playing skills - not to mention keep fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

64

65

66

CO-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES At Wells, you will enjoy a full and rich programme around and beyond academic choices, which will help to enhance applications to higher education, apprenticeships and employment opportunities. We encourage you to commit to a range of other activities available: music, sport, drama, public speaking, Combined Cadet Force, Young Enterprise, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, community service and many others.

67

The countryside around Wells is full of interesting landmarks and historical associations. They include the legendary Glastonbury Tor, some nine miles from Wells. The Tor features the roofless St. Michael’s Tower, a grade I listed building managed by the National Trust. Roman remains suggest early settlements, and further excavations on the Tor have revealed evidence of Dark Age occupation. The Tor has been associated with Arthurian legend, since the alleged discovery of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere’s labelled coffins in 1191. It has been suggested that the Tor could be one of the locations of the Holy Grail due to its proximity to the location of the monastery that housed the Nanteos Cup.

CHORISTER LIFE

www.wellscathedralschool.com

71

You will find yourself working as part of a close-knit team 72

A choir of men and boys has been singing in the stunning setting of Wells Cathedral for over 1100 years. In 1994, Wells Cathedral became one of the first to launch a girls’ choir. Today, the Cathedral Choir is considered to be one of the finest in the world with a reputation for ground-breaking, contemporary repertoire as well as a traditional and classic menu. Our choristers are awarded scholarships, receive training in singing and choral music, and benefit from all our usual curricular and co-curricular activities. They work as part of a close-knit team and develop a sense of self-discipline and service. They know how to acknowledge and learn from mistakes. The School’s commitment is to give them an enabling framework and a first-class education. Alongside Cathedral services, the choir performs an extensive repertoire from all historical periods at recitals, national radio and television broadcasts and regular international tours.

73

74

WELLS CATHEDRAL Wells Cathedral is one of the most impressive of the English Gothic cathedrals, having survived eight centuries, with all of its associated buildings still around it, dominating the city of Wells. The Cathedral has been at the heart of our School throughout its 1100 year history. Pupils’ regular exposure to one of the most awe-inspiring buildings in the world is a privilege enjoyed by all. This gives our community an ethos where work, study and spirituality are combined. Pupils are inspired to live with integrity and social responsibility, upholding our Christian tradition. They are shown the way to live well and happily with a sense of empowerment and inner fulfilment.

75

76

SPECIALIST MUSIC

77

78

WORLD-CLASS PROVISION Our Specialist Musicians receive first-class, pre-professional training from teachers who are world-class musicians themselves, many of whom are active performers and teach at UK conservatoires. We will work with you to develop your artistry, technique, creativity, curiosity, knowledge, theory, entrepreneurship and confidence. This world-class provision equips you with everything you need to succeed on your journey to become a complete musician and excel in a competitive industry. Our stunning venues include our state-of-the-art Cedars Hall, which offers beautiful acoustics with its 300 seater auditorium, and the medieval Quilter Hall, which is perfect for solo lunchtime concerts and intimate chamber music. Our musicians also perform in the awe-inspiring Wells Cathedral, which allows large orchestras to perform to huge audiences. Unlike at any other specialist music school, Specialist Musicians at Wells enjoy being part of a wider, allround school. This unique arrangement not only provides you with academic and co-curricular opportunities that can’t be accessed anywhere else, but also benefits your music-making.

79

80

INDIVIDUAL APPROACH We provide bespoke programmes because we recognise that each of our Specialist Musicians is unique. We work with Specialists and their parents to create a tailored education to suit their individual talents, circumstances, aspirations and overall wellbeing. It is a delicate balance, but we ensure the weighting of instrumental practice, rehearsals, performances, masterclasses, academic subjects and other co-curricular activities is right for each young musician. The life of a Specialist is a busy one, and you will need to be committed and dedicated. We encourage you to be innovative, resourceful and versatile and to pursue excellence in all that you do. This pursuit will be demanding, yet ultimately rewarding, and we will celebrate your successes with you as well as support you where needed. We pride ourselves on excellent pastoral care, and you can be reassured that your wellbeing and future is important to us.

81

82

EXPANDED HORIZONS Our community enjoys inspiring concerts performed by renowned visiting artists, and our Specialist Musicians are privileged to learn directly from these artists in masterclasses. In addition, there are also opportunities to work alongside top professional ensembles or choirs as well as other young musicians from leading conservatoires, both nationally and internationally. We will encourage you to explore the wide range of musical opportunities we have on offer. You may discover new musical talents - such as conducting, composing and presenting - and enjoy learning new genres, with opportunities ranging from early music played on period instruments to barbershop, drumline, jazz, rock, pop, songwriting and more.

83

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES We understand that learning how to perform comfortably, whether as a soloist or as part of an ensemble, is vital at every stage of a musician’s development. There are more than 250 performance opportunities each year in a wide variety of venues with regular tours within the UK and overseas, including Europe, Asia and the USA. Our pupils also take part in festivals and competitions, both internationally and in the UK, and regularly achieve success in the BBC Young Musician and BBC Young Chorister of the Year competitions. By taking part in our many orchestras, ensembles, bands and choirs, you will have chances to build lifelong friendships and foster team spirit while developing the ability to collaborate with others. These opportunities, as well as solo performances, will enable you to achieve the ultimate goal of sharing and communicating your passion for music with an audience.

84

85

86 86

CITIZENSHIP We foster a love of music, which has it all: academic rigour, historical awareness, physical movement, creativity, beauty, teamwork and empathy. We share this love of music in every way, from partnership work with local schools to international competitions. Every opportunity provides important leadership skills for our Specialists. In short, studying music at Wells equips you to become a citizen of the world.

87

88

LIFE AFTER WELLS Our Specialists typically go on to study at prestigious conservatoires around the world, often with a substantial scholarship. When the time comes for you to leave Wells, we will help to guide you to the next phase of your journey, whether that be a place at a conservatoire or university, and equip you for the professional and personal challenges in life after Wells. Our Old Wellensians push boundaries and have become renowned for forging successful, exciting and fulfilling careers all over the world in their chosen field. Whatever it is that you aspire to do, we are here to help enable you to become the very best you can be.

SOMERSET AGRICULTURE Somerset is famous throughout the world for its thriving agriculture and its food and drink production. Perhaps best known of all is Cheddar cheese, which originated in the nearby village of Cheddar and is one of the most popular cheeses in the world. Somerset cider - a fermented alcoholic beverage made from apple juice - is also celebrated locally and across the globe. The catering team at the School makes the most of the abundance of fine food on our doorstep. They are the proud owners of a ‘Food for Life’ award, which recognises their commitment to serving an international menu of freshly prepared, nutritious food using locally sourced, sustainable produce.

91

92

BOARDING LIFE

93

94

Our priority is to create a ‘home from home’ within a warm, caring, family environment, where pupils are very well looked after by a Houseparent, Assistant Houseparent and Matrons. Our youngest boarders (from Year 4) live together in a dedicated co-educational House, Claver Morris, which is small enough to maintain a family feel and yet large enough for the children to form diverse friendships. Its large walled garden is a safe place for children to play, enjoy games and relax outdoors. In the Senior School, each House is a focal point for group identity, friendship and relaxation, with healthy rivalries between Houses in sport, drama, public speaking and other academic achievement. The Houses are medieval or eighteenth century buildings, and all are close to our campus. Upper Sixth Formers live in Ritchie, our bespoke coeducational house that is designed to provide a stepping stone from school life to university.

95

HOUSE FACILITIES All rooms have ICT equipment with wireless internet access. We ask you to bring a device that you can also bring to lessons. All Houses have common rooms with games and activities for the boarders to enjoy. You can relax in our spacious gardens and find your favourite foods stocked in the kitchens.

96

97

98

WHOLESOME FOOD Our chefs provide three cooked meals a day, including a vegetarian option and salad bar in our dining hall. Older pupils may also use the separate snack bar, which provides healthy snack options when schedules become busy. The dining hall is a place for you to meet and enjoy healthy fresh food and catch up with friends. You will have access to your Houses during the day, where you can enjoy fresh fruit and make toast and sandwiches.
