Wellspring Welcomes Dr. Matt Davis, Medical Director for the Crisis Stabilization Units Dr. Matt Davis credits the time he spent at a day shelter for the homeless in Albuquerque, New Mexico for starting him on the path that ultimately led him to Wellspring’s Crisis Stabilization programs .
“That experience was formative.” Dr. Davis shares. “In working with the homeless, especially those with the added challenge of mental illness, I could see the full range of needs they had, and how so many fell between the cracks.”

Mayor Fischer’s “Give A Day” Week of Service: April 15 -22, 2012 Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has announced his “Give A Day” Week of Service, to take place April 15th through April 22nd, helping kick off the 2012 Kentucky Derby Festival. This volunteer extravaganza is one facet of Mayor Fischer’s commitment to make Louisville a more caring city and to gain international recognition for its compassion. He recently signed a resolution adopting the international “Charter for Compassion,” thereby making Louisville the largest American city to take this action. “Being a compassionate city is both the right thing and the necessary thing to do to ensure that we take care of all of our citizens,” Fischer said. “There’s a role for all of us in making sure no one is left behind or goes wanting.” Mayor Fischer encourages everyone in the community to spend a day volunteering for nonprofit organizations in need of help. “We want Louisville to be known as the most caring city, where neighbors help neighbors and people look after each other,” Fischer said. “We want as many people as possible in all areas of our city to get involved in Give A Day.” The Mayor’s Office organized a week of service last October to help “get the volunteer energy flowing” for the upcoming April event. Several volunteers participated by landscaping at our Crescent Court residence and helping run the Wellspring Wallopalooza Golf Marathon. Wellspring is energized to be one of Mayor Fischer’s Give A Day nonprofit agencies. Dr. Hedges has an equal amount of respect for Dr. Davis. "Seven Counties Services is delighted to have on our medical team such an outstanding physician as Dr. Davis,” Dr. Hedges remarked. “His experience in the military plus his personal traits makes for a very compassionate and caring provider. He is the perfect fit for the mission and vision of the Wellspring CSUs. I believe that he will provide a strong medical anchor to an already exceptional service array in our Louisville area." Mike Markham, Clinical Supervisor at the Gaines CSU, balances that by saying, “We are very appreciative that Seven Counties Services makes it a priority to provide coverage to the CSUs. We are thrilled that Dr. Davis’ experience, mission and passion match Wellspring’s so closely. Having him here full-time has already enhanced our services.” Carol Miles, Clinical Supervisor at the David J. Block CSU, echoes this sentiment. “Dr. Davis has been a welcomed addition to the CSU team, providing a thorough, sensitive, and flexible approach to the complex need of our clients.” Dr. Davis cites what he calls “a genuine team approach” to being what really “makes it work” at the CSUs. “So much of the success comes from the team approach to meet the full needs of the client and the interaction that occurs here. And I love the flexibility that allows me to give the clients what they need, at the time they need it most.” Dr. Davis adds, “I have never seen the level of patient advocacy and honesty in patient care that the CSUs provide matched anywhere else.” Since he has been in this role for only a couple of months, Dr. Davis is still learning about the whole of Wellspring. But one thing is clear, Dr. Davis says. “I need to know what I do makes a difference; that’s where my satisfaction lies. And I know I’m needed here.”

The Humana Foundation grants Wellspring $25,000 for Crisis Stabilization Centers
The majority of Wellspring’s residents have very limited incomes, and many have no income at all. While most qualify for some kind of disability benefit, it can be months before those benefits can take effect. David’s Fund was established to help make our resident’s lives just a little bit easier.
It is Wellspring’s honor to announce that The Humana Foundation has chosen Wellspring as the recipient of a $25,000 grant, to be used toward expenses at our two Crisis Stabilization Units (CSUs). Wellspring’s CSUs, the Frank M. Gaines Center and the David J. Block Center, offer the most intensive level of support provided by the agency. They provide an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization and serve around 500 individuals each year.
Our residents can apply for grants or loans from David’s Fund to help meet their basic needs. Even having access to $10 or $15 a week can make all the difference in the life of someone at Wellspring. It might cover the cost of bus fare, personal care items, or health-related items such as eyeglasses and prescriptions.
“We are proud of the fact that Wellspring is one of the few remaining mental health agencies that serves people regardless of their payor source,” said Kathy Dobbins, Wellspring’s Executive Director. “Last calendar year, more than fifty percent of those we served through our CSUs were uninsured.”

Lenny Lyles (1936—2011 ) We at Wellspring extend our condolences to the family of Leonard Everett Lyles, who passed away in November at the age of 75.

Lenny was a superior athlete, setting records at Central High School and UofL and playing 12 seasons in the NFL. In addition to his prowess on the field, Lenny was a successful businessman and community leader. He helped revitalize the Smoketown neighborhood and played a key role in the development of the West End, especially the Lyles Mall. He was a mentor and role model for minority youths and an exemplary citizen.
All are invited to attend to commemorate the 95th anniversary of her birth. Cornelia was a strong force in improving the lives of those in need, especially those who experience mental illness. Courageous and steadfast in all facets of her life, Cornelia will remain a beacon of light and an inspiration to those who follow the pathways she blazed.
Lenny was a valuable member to Wellspring’s Capital Campaign Committee and a powerful advocate for our mission. His vision and commitment will be missed by the Louisville community.
