he law firm of Coats and Cordle purchased and began renovation of 6722 Broad Street in December of 2004, moving into the building in June of 2005. The building had originally been the Banks Brothers General Store and served Douglasville from 1913 to 1964. Since then the building has housed a variety of businesses, the most recent being the Le Jardin Blanc Garden Antique Store. Rob Coats, Randy Cordle and builder Joel Godbey redesigned the 3,000square foot buildings interior in a style designers call “retro modern�. This style harkens back to the sleek straight lines of the mid-twentieth century. However, most of the original structure remains, like the shell of the building, which inside and out, is made of the original 1913 brick. The flooring is the original heartwood pine, as are the huge support beams that run throughout the building.

8536 Bowden Street Sherrod Residence
T
his house was constructed between 1900-1909 and is a fine example of the Queen Anne style. The house type is the familiar “New South Cottage”. The house was built by Mr. Edge. Shortly after the house was built, the Upshaw family became residents. Willie D. Upshaw was nominated and won the nomination on the prohibition ticket in 1932 for the President of the United States. He won the State of Georgia. Later he ran for Congress and was elected. In the mid 1940’s, the Bennett family moved into the house. The Bennetts raised four children, one of whom is Dot Bennett Padgett. CarLouLea Bennett, Dot’s mother, lived in the house until 1992. CarLouLea lived to be 100 years old. CarLouLea taught music and was also a school teacher in Douglasville. In 1996 the home was renovated by Larry Morgan, he added the garage and updated the interior. In 1999 John Sherrod bought the home and added the pool, pool house and fencing, as well as the beautiful landscaping. Although this home has been on the tour in the past, Mr. Sherrod married in the summer of 2005 and he and his wife Shellie have made several changes to the interior. The Sherrod’s now share the home with their four children and pets.

Greystone Trolley For your added convenience the Downtown Development Authority has provided a trolley to travel to and from each location on the tour. The trolley has been provided for individuals who may need assistance visiting each location. The trolley will depart from the City of Douglasville’s parking lot located at Price Avenue and Church Street beginning at 5:30 p.m. It will make a stop at each location, returning to the parking lot in 20-minute intervals. The last departure will be at 8:10 p.m.

For Our Guests About the Tour
The Candlelight Tour of Historic Homes takes place in private homes, which are graciously opened to the public by generous Douglasville residents. Please note the following:
* Photography or videotaping is not allowed inside the properties.
* Tour headquarters, located on
O’Neal Plaza will be open from 12–6pm on Saturday, December 2nd for ticket sales.
* All tour participants should receive
* This is a self-paced, self-guided
walking tour. Sites included on the walking tour vary in architectural styles and periods. Many properties are high stooped with 8–12 steps to climb for entry. Please be aware that historic homes are not wheelchair accessible.
* Participants may visit the sites in any order and at their own pace, within the allotted hours.
* Please wear appropriate walking
shoes. High-heeled shoes are not recommended for the tour, as they may damage historic wood floors. Flat-soled shoes are much more comfortable for strolling uneven streets and sidewalks.

* Well-supervised children, with a ticket, are welcomed; strollers or children carried by parents are not allowed in the historic homes.
* The buildings on tour are privately

8556 Bowden Street Kell Residence
T
his Queen Anne Farmhouse, circa 1900, is a shining example of the architecture common for that period. There are several examples of the Queen Anne style still present in the home today. The bay window with its’ 2/2 double-hung sash was typical of the style as was the formal parlor with its’ elaborate mantle and fireplace. The high ceilings are another example as well as the coal burning fireplaces and the horizontal clapboard walls. There have been several updates to the house since its’ most recent purchase — the most noticeable being the new raised-seam tin roof and the staircase in the front foyer. In September of 1904, N.B. and J.T. Duncan purchased the house for the sum of $400.00 — a fair price for that time! Since then the house has changed hands several times, the last being in April 2006 when the Estate of Millie Martin sold the house to Renee Kell. The sale price, while being considerably more than $400.00 was still “a right fair price” for a home of such character and historical significance.

8560 Price Avenue Bartlett Residence
C
onstructed between 1905 and 1910 by C.F. Selman for his family, this home is an example of how local craftsmen interpreted the late Queen Anne Farmhouse style. A oneand-a-half story structure, upon completion it boasted high ceilings and large rooms — three bedrooms, one bathroom, a dining room, a sitting room, and a kitchen. Despite its modest lines and lack of gingerbread trim, in typical Queen Anne fashion this home has diamond pane transom windows, clapboard siding, a combination of steeply gabled and hipped rooflines and a generous front porch. This address has been home to three families since the Selman family moved in the 1910s. Dr. Ralph Hamilton, a prominent local physician and his wife Edna, an avid horticulturalist, treated patients and created a fantastic garden in the rear of the property for over fifty years. In the 1970s, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Irwin purchased, maintained and entertained in the home until 2002. In 2004, Al and Maria Bartlett began a renovation of the house and gardens. Everything that could be saved and restored — original heart pine floors, doors, windows, hardware, fireplaces and mantles — has been. A notable change is the recent return of the front porch back to its original design. 11

his Tudor Revival home was built in the late 1930s by Rader Kirkley, the first Chevrolet dealer in Douglasville. Clyde and Gerila Atkinson bought the home in the early 1940s and continued to live there until it was sold in 1996 to Trey and Elizabeth Dettmering. Brooke Coleman purchased the home in August of 2004.
