My student base went from 83 to more than 450 students in less than 9 months! NAPMA has set me free from head0aches. Each month its new ideas and marketing materials takes away all the guesswork. With NAPMA, my student base went from 83 students to over 450 students in less than 9 months. NAPMA showed me the way. It’s simple, follow the NAPMA guidelines, do a little cut and paste and you’re on your way. Now I spend my time doing what I like to do, and do best...teach. Experience the difference—NAPMA. Bruce Drago Master Drago’s Karate Reading PA From 0 to over 300 students in our first year! We moved to Santa Barbara where we knew one person and opened up a studio. We decided that it would be a good idea to go to the NAPMA convention and pick up a few ideas. What we found were programs that we could use to build and manage our business, an experienced, professional, helpful NAPMA staff, and other successful martial arts business owners that were happy to share their ideas on how to make a business grow. We’ve been in business now for a little over a year, have over 300 students and we’re still growing. For over 30 years I’ve kept my martial arts “sword” sharp by daily training, now I keep my business “sword” sharp with NAPMA. Thank you NAPMA. We couldn’t have done it without you. The Great MYTH of “Selling Out” in the Martial Arts School Business A Message from NAPMA CEO Stephen Oliver: I’d like to address something two things right up front. Let’s make sure we’re on the “same page” on this one. There have been some groups in our industry that have run around teaching “high-pressure” sales techniques, and advising school owners to cash everyone out, never worry about student service, and that the only key to success was how big a contract you could talk someone into pre-paying. If you’ve been approached by any of these hit and run artists, then run, don’t walk, away as quickly as possible. They are responsible for a wave of bankruptsies in the industry, and for another new round of regulators requiring bonding and ever-restrictive policies for what you can and can’t do in your school. That’s NOT what we are all about. What we are about is establishing your school to be successfully operating in your community 20, 30 or more years in the same location. We’re about establishing a school where two, or even three, generations from the same family all train in your school, either together, or over a period of years. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s a MYTH that permeates our industry that you somehow must “sell-out” your values, that you must “water-down” your curriculum, that you must “sell Black Belts” and become a “belt factory” to become financially successful. While it’s true that some have taken that route to turn a quick-buck, the reality is that we will be modeling only the HIGHEST quality instructors who produce the most physically gifted Black Belts. In order to really grow a substantial school, we will teach you how to IMPROVE your student quality; how to strengthen your martial arts roots; how to stand up tall and be proud about the quality of your students; how to make an income that allows you to put your kids through college, and allows you to live in a lifestyle that you desire. Not only do you NOT have to lose your identity as a martial artist, or water down your curriculum to be successful, the opposite is true. What’s required of you is to truly be, or become the highest quality Master Instructor, and to truly produce students that you can be proud of in every way. The necessary steps to growing as a professional school owner is to professionalize everything you do. Become increasingly effective as a professional teacher. And “master the martial arts business’ to the same level that you’ve mastered the martial arts. That means learning how to effectively attract students to your school. Learning how to exert leadership and influence to have them join your school and commit to training long-term. It means next providing the highest quality service to perpetuate the word of mouth marketing that’s so crucial to any school and attract friends and family members, and ultimately to serve several generations within your community.

practically no business experience. With your monthly business tips, eye-catching ad material, and video support, we’ve grown by leaps and bounds. When we first joined NAPMA, we had approximately 25 students and were teaching in an old television repair shop out of the city limits. Both my wife and myself were working full-time jobs plus running our school full time. NAPMA’s advice allowed us to more than double our enrollment and be able to move to a better location. We cannot begin to thank you enough for helping build the backbone of our dojo. We now have a student base of 130, and have recently expanded our school to double the size with a bigger lobby, smoothie bar, and a second classroom currently under construction. This is now our full-time job.

I opened my first studio at the age of 21. My vision was to teach martial arts as a hobby while I pursued a career in law enforcement. I never realized that martial arts could be a serious profession (let alone a profitable one). When I connected with the people at NAPMA, I learned that becoming a professional martial arts studio owner was more than just a daydream. They taught me how to run a professional studio, integrate new and exciting programs and turn my vision into reality. I currently have a dedicated program that includes grappling and kickboxing with upgrade programs such Black Belt Club, Masters Class and Leadership training. My vision has changed, my studio has grown and my way of life has improved dramatically. I went from part-time hobby, to full-time enjoyment! Thanks NAPMA. Shane G. I would say that my school has brought in more than a million dollars because of NAPMA. I don’t have a big school like some of the gurus in martial arts. In fact, my school was located in basement of bowling alley with only 2,000 sq. feet. NAPMA has taught me that you do not have to have a big school or chain of school to be successful. In fact, I am very confident that my school in the basement was the one of the most profitable schools in the nation for that size. I think all of this happened because NAPMA has provided my school with the advantages I need to be a successful and professional martial artist. ■ The NAPMA Innovations DVD
A Series of Valuable Lessons… In the July and August Resources Kits, you received parts 1 and 2 of an interview with my instructor Jhoon Rhee. Jeff Smith and I have been associated with Jhoon Rhee for 45 and coming up on 40 years, respectively. If you pay close attention to the interview and the discussions we’ll have at the Extreme Success Academy, then there are many, many lessons to learn from Jhoon Rhee. First, a trivia point, the song, “Nobody Bothers Me,” you heard on the CD was Nils Lofgren. He was a Jhoon Rhee student with Jeff Smith (and myself) in Kensington, MD. He’s now a key member of the “E-Street Band” with Bruce Springsteen (if you see them playing, he’s the shorter guy to Bruce’s left [as you are facing them] with the bandana). In Washington, D.C., you couldn’t go anywhere without people knowing both “Nobody Bothers Me” and USA-1000 [their phone number.)

openly reviled by many in the martial arts community. Both for their “innovation” and their “commercialism.” I recall Black Belt Magazine articles’ debates in the 1960’s: one being “The Case against Commercialism” and another referring to Jhoon Rhee as the Piped Piper of Korean Karate. Upon listening to the interview, I thought I’d clarify one point. You might have gotten the idea that Bruce Lee was “anti-commercial.” Actually the opposite is true. If you look at the letters between the two of them, then you’ll see that Bruce Lee was sending Jhoon Rhee advertising from Chuck Norris and others for karate schools and was very interested in the business aspects. However, Bruce Lee decided that his path to wealth was acting, not operating martial arts schools. Jhoon Rhee made the opposite decision. I’ve talked with Grand Master Rhee about this goals statement that Bruce Lee wrote. Jhoon Rhee was actually on the phone with him at the time. Clearly neither Bruce Lee nor Jhoon Rhee had “hang-ups” about whether they should be making money from martial arts. Jhoon Rhee described it to me in two ways: first, it’s impossible to accomplish much of anything without financial resources. Second, if you are providing a great service, then you deserve to be well compensated.

Lesson 2: The Master-Mind effect. You heard a little bit about the people that Jhoon Rhee surrounded himself with. I can tell you from personal experience that his peer group and “Master-Mind” group was not the other guys running schools who were failing and making excuses. Who was he associating with? Well, other than Bruce Lee, he was associating with a large group of congressmen and senators; he affiliated with smart and wealthy people ranging from Jack Anderson to Tony Robbins. He brought Nick Cokinos (EFC founder) into the martial arts business (as well as myself, Jeff Smith and others). He was constantly seeking out others who could contribute to his goals and who could

Born and Raised in Brussels, Belgium, he began early instruction in ballet and karate-foreshadowing a career that would later capitalize on the intertwined nature of both. Invited to join the Paris Opera as a dancer, the young Van Damme instead chose to focus on karate and bodybuilding, quitting school to operate his very own successful fitness center, The California Gym in Brussels. Though he quickly found fame in his native Belgium as a prized athlete and health club entrepreneur, his life would take another turn. Hong Kong. After little success breaking into the Hong Kong martial arts film industry, Van Damme felt it was time to take on Hollywood. Arriving on American soil in 1982, Van Damme possessed the requisite good looks and persistent attitude to succeed— unfortunately, he knew no languages other than French and Flemish. In corporating the elegance of ballet into his karate, Van Damme has transcended the brute force of the martial arts genre. Yet it was karate, the actor says, which helped him focus on and achieve his movie-making dreams. Van Damme made his feature film debut starring in Cannon Film’s 1988 release Bloodsport. Numerous studio films followed, the success of this Belgian can be traced to his ability to appeal to all ages and genders and his larger-than-life image that captures the imagination of moviegoers worldwide.

“early years” that kept me at such a small number of students, and with addition of NAPMA, two things have just exploded for us this year. We’re at 200 active and growing by leaps and bounds. We project to be well over 225 by year’s end. James Theros Level 10 Martial Arts Indianapolis, IN 46227 NAPMA has changed my vision... I currently have a dedicated program that includes grappling and kickboxing with alternative upgrade programs such Black Belt Club, Masters Class and Leadership training. My vision has changed, my studio has grown and my way of life has improved dramatically...I went from part-time hobby, to full-time enjoyment! Thanks NAPMA. Shane G. Weaver Sr. Instructor/Owner Red Griffin Martial Arts Studio, Canada Greetings from the Kingdom of Bahrain! When I first joined NAPMA I had less than 50 students, today I have close to 250! I think NAPMA is a great organization and is a great window into the professional martial arts industry for those of us who live far from the US. The style of martial arts I teach is called Zen-Do Kickboxing. Zen-Do Bahrain is probably the largest school in the Middle East. My NAPMA membership has
been worth every penny. Thank you for making it such a great success. Suhail G. Algosaib Zen-Do Bahrain Suddenly it hit me that there is so much information in there, it really isn’t necessary to invest in any other marketing materials, martial art or otherwise! I just have to tell you this. I’m getting myself ready for Valentine’s promotions, so I decided to look at the NAPMA February (package) for additional ideas. But I get caught up reading some of the other material in the package. I’m just thinking, “What if I had REALLY been using this material over the past 10 years? Where would my school be today?” I feel reborn! Dwight Woods Miami, Florida UP 40% from 2007! I AM ON TRACK! My enrollment hit 310 yesterday which was my June 1st goal! I set income and enrollment goals last year for this year. I have been blowing past my financial goals (which were based on about 33% growth over 2007 even though I was steady between 2006-2007. I have had a very strong financial year. My YTD goal was $215,887 but, in fact, I hit $261,584! That’s 20% over goal! Last year (for the first 5 months) I had made only $185,899, which is 40% growth!!! Thank you guys so much for your help! For the first time I can remember, I had people come and ask me for an upgrade. Very empowering. So: Here is what I have learned—that despite the unexpected—Stephen Oliver and Dan Kennedy were right in their predictions I raised my prices, increased my volume, increased my closing rate and decreased my complaints about money and have people upgrading into even more expensive programs even when consumer confidence is supposedly low. WOW! This is cool! Thanks again guys. You

have been a support and inspiration Jonathan Metcalf Integrity Martial Arts I doubled the size of my school in two months! Our active enrollment was 123 students. With the help of NAPMA Little Ninjas preschool program and the Ultimate Body Shaping Course, I grew my school to 254 students. The momentum continued with 35 new students that March. My school leaped to the next level and the momentum has driven us to even greater successes. Not only does it give each Little Ninja something to focus on every day, but it also gives him a reward each day ( belt stripe or stickers and applause ). It also causes the instructor to focus on each child individually each day instead of looking at them as just a sea of eyes and bodies. They focus on individuals. The Little Ninjas program creates a special moment for each student everyday. Comments: I have tried

I must say I sleep better at night not having to worry about every little detail that goes on. My classes are better now that I am constantly motivated. I don’t need to pick my own brain now that I have professional consultants and people to network from. The entire NAPMA staff is the most professional in this field. But don’t take my word for it, ask any NAPMA member and I’m sure they would say the same! We should be at 300 students by the end of October and are on track for 350–400 by the end of the year. If I hadn’t started NAPMA’s Fitness Kickboxing I’d still be working a job. If I hadn’t started Little Ninjas and the UBC I’d still be just getting by. I became a member before I even opened the doors to my school and I’m thankful that I did. Without the great new ideas and help from NAPMA I know all this wouldn’t have happened! Thank you, NAPMA! cut out for me. Starting with 60 students and most of their tuition already cashed out, bartered, or late, the school had a gross income of a whopping $6,000 per month! As an immediate call to action I pulled a secret weapon out from under my sleeve...my action plan. I got to work right away by applying all that I learned from my mentors at NAPMA. In martial arts, we generally learn stances first to establish a strong foundation to build up to learning the basics. The first six months was stance training! I implemented a billing service to get tuition on track. The curriculum was burned and revamped to suit the needs of a modern martial art student from children to adults and, no I did not sell out or comprise the integrity of my style! I got to work on getting my rear in gear with personal development such as goal setting and time management. A lot of these things we had in place already but there is an enormous difference in doing things and doing things right. Six months later the school was generating cash flow and it was time to keep statistics. The monthly total gross now up to double digits before the comma $13,284.89! Growing to 182 students later that year, I moved the school to a new location, $12,922.19 then $16,498.64 monthly gross, I built a monster and it was growing. Year two, the monthly gross peaked at $25,760.44, and I was drawing a paycheck and had long moved out of my locker room sleeping days. Each year I attended the NAPMA Conference and returned for the next round of rolling up my sleeves and getting busy. Long story short,

nization, our school would climb a little and then sink back down. Needless to say, we were growing very frustrated. No one was helping us. Then we heard about NAPMA. We left that other organization, found a new billing company and became NAPMA members. Since joining NAPMA we have left our old location, which was approximately 1,000 sq. feet and opened up in a prime new location with 3,000 sq. feet and have been there for over 2 years now. Our numbers have also increased! We went from having approximately 60 active students to now over 200 active students, and still growing! We have also enjoyed belonging to the NAPMA Member Forum, which is a great resource! And we have learned so much from all the wonderful people we have been able to network with through this medium. From almost Day 1 with NAPMA, we have always felt like we were part of a family! We feel like everyone is right there for us and not some obscure figure somewhere. People at NAPMA are REAL people who are always there to help us. We cannot say enough about NAPMA and the wonderful things NAPMA has done for our school. Robert M. Chester East Coast Martial Arts Center Groton, CT NAPMA has been there with me, every step of the way, as I grew to over 300 students and completed an expansion literally doubling my mat space It was over 10 years ago that I quit my full-time job in nursing to open my school. I’m glad I was insightful enough to join NAPMA six months before I even opened the doors!

Explosively Growing Your Student Enrollment We’re firm believers in the Parthenon Principle of Marketing your martial arts school. That is, using many, many methods of generating leads and referrals for new students, including direct response marketing, about internal referral generating systems, about buying and using various external media, and about every conceivable productive way to generate new students. This knowledge has been hard-won over the years by NAPMA’s professional staff and members, and we will share it all with you during the course of your NAPMA membership. Here’s a visual of the Parthenon Principle of Marketing, and just a few of the ways NAPMA members are successfully generating tons of new students for their schools on a daily basis. And you’ll learn how to implement this system in your own school! YOUR MARTIAL ARTS SCHOOL

SOURCES OF NEW STUDENTS
NAPMA has been there with me from the beginning-from how to choose a location, to systems for tracing enrollments and retention, to special events, and really effective “NON-BLACK BELT EYES” ads. NAPMA has been there with me, every step of the way, as I grew to over 300 students and completed an expansion literally doubling my mat space. But best of all, NAPMA encouraged me to truly value the character development skills I teach and to price the training accordingly. Without that encouragement, I’m sure I couldn’t be where I am today. NAPMA is great at helping school owners to do their best because NAPMA is the BEST! Diane Reeve Vision Martial Arts Center Plano, TX 75023 Between nine months and one year of joining NAPMA, my martial arts school has tripled in size. I opened my martial arts school in Bermuda two years ago and struggled to find and keep a core of students focused on training. About a year ago, I found NAPMA on the Web and contemplated whether I should join this organization, because so many organizations promise they will help you achieve your goals, and they never fulfill their end or there is always a catch. So I bit the bullet, and enrolled in the NAPMA program. Between nine months and one year of joining NAPMA, my martial arts school has tripled in size and has a student base more focused and excited about the benefits of joining a martial arts school. The monthly material that NAPMA sends you is guaranteed to work if you read it, study it and apply it. This is the only true industry that can target life skills development in our children and adults. Any serious martial arts school owner should strongly consider joining NAPMA if they want to make a living in the

There are hundreds of ways to generate new students for your school, and we’ll be’ll be teaching you many of them. You must have MULTIPLE referral systems in place, and must be continually participating in community outreach activities. You must learn to intelligently invest your resources in paid advertising and direct mail to grow your school effectively. But we don’t talk and teach these things: we provide you with the resources you need to accomplish just those goals. We’ll be teaching you a range of promotional activities and plans—and, in many cases, giving you the complete artwork that you can personalize and print for your school to help you implement right away. Each month in your Basic Resource Toolkit, you’ll receive information about new marketing plans and tools, and continuously at our member web site, you’ll find a constantly changing and updated library of resources. Here’s just a sample of the types of marketing campaigns we provide for you to use “as is,” or pull-apart to customize as you wish.

FOR MOM!

For marketing, the public schools are distributing our NAPMA flyers to all the kids EVERY MONTH. I take ONE copy to the school and they re-copy and distribute to the kids. It helps that I went to school there and hung around with the current teachers. At the local 3A football games where my former NASKA rated nephew, now a senior, attends and plays on the team, they promote the new studio over the p.a. system. I gave free three-month lesson packets as rewards for academic performances for the grade school kids, donated free months of lessons for less fortunate kids at another school and have promised to do a Tony Robbins FIREWALK fund-raiser for the elementary school when my studio reaches 100 active! I did a Firewalk for Tyson’s computer programmers earlier in October. We give out VIP Passes everywhere we go. We have an information box out front of the construction site with helpful info and schedules of classes...all 31 or more classes that we offer. We have several future newspaper ads ready to run, thanks to NAPMA. The local newspaper previously ran a 1/3-page story on the new business coming to town complete with phone number and address. I also hung out with the reporter’s uncle a few years ago! He promised to come back when we open, too. The phone is ringing.... calls from future students as far away as Bentonville, (35 miles) requesting an opening date. We are ready to get the ball rolling and want to say a great big “THANK YOU” to NAPMA for your incredibly

Stress is an ancient adult burden, which is why the ancient art of T’ai Chi has so successfully relieved countless adults and seniors of that burden. Re-focus, re-energize and rebound from the hard knocks of modern times with the gentle, relaxing movements of T’ai Chi. It’s the perfect complement to other physical activities or medical therapies because it increases blood flow, oxygenates blood and improves breathing. T’ai Chi is easy on the joints and organs and clears the mind for better concentration. Our school invites you to try an introductory T’ai Chi class for free. Call us for an appointment today!

I am a direct response marketer and dojo owner and have for the last eight years helped to produce a perennial top ten infomercial, which is an industry leader and top performer. Your audio CD series is innovative and informative and the rest of the package is top notch as well. All of these kudos point to the kind of visionary leadership backed by a strong support team that was needed to honorably rekindle my faith and TRUST in NAPMA. I thank you all for the hard work you have done to reach this point and look with interest to the future of marketing and networking in the martial arts—NAPMA. Kevin Huunjin Cullen
