WHERE IS YOUR

2007 Golf Digest/Golf for Women Signature Home Now Open for Tours

2004 GOLF Magazine Dream House

Where do you want to spend the best times of your life? Nearly 100 years ago, inventor Mercer Reynolds chose a pristine wooded sanctuary as his ultimate getaway; more recently, both GOLF Magazine and Golf Digest chose to place their first-ever “ultimate golf homes” in the community that evolved from his family's vision: Reynolds Plantation. As a unique primary address or the perfect vacation home, Reynolds Plantation is a world apart, but never far away. With award-winning golf courses by Nicklaus, Fazio, Cupp, Jones and Engh, plus over 80 miles of shoreline on Lake Oconee, the quiet retreat of the Reynolds family is now one of the world's premier golf and lake communities_ as evidenced by Reynolds Plantation having earned The Robb Report's “Best of the Best Golf Community” designation. Many owners first experienced the community through a stay at the AAA Five Diamond Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, which overlooks 19,000-acre Lake Oconee. We invite you to visit Reynolds Plantation and discover your ultimate golf home today.

HOME ?

A limited number of private golf cottages at The Creek Club, the Jim Engh-designed member-only course opening this summer, will soon be offered for sale for the first time. These luxurious cottages will offer the ultimate in convenience and service for their owners, and are available exclusively through Reynolds Plantation Realty.

For information on real estate opportunities, please contact Reynolds Plantation Realty at 800.800.5250 or visit www.reynoldsplantation.com Obtain the property report required by federal law and read it before signing anything. No federal agency has judged the merit or value, if any, of this property. Void where prohibited by law.

of Ernest Hemingway. Legend has it that the author was given a six-toed cat by a visiting ship's captain, and many of the kitty’s descendents are among the 60-or-so cats residing at the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. To this day, many of the cats have extra toes. Even more curious than the funky felines is the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square. Tourists and residents alike gather at the nation’s southern-most tip to watch street performers and psychics perform as the orange sun slips beyond the horizon. Known for bimini tops as much as bikini tops, the Keys are a mecca for boating and diving enthusiasts. Within the protected waters of Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, shipwrecks tell maritime stories, humpback whales raise their young, kelp forests dance with the currents and rocky reefs flourish. Non-divers can watch rainbow-colored fish from glass-bottom boat tours at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Snorkelers will find some of the best underwater scenery in the country at Dry Tortugas National Park. Florida is more than glistening beaches, cool springs and sunny everglades. Florida is also known for vibrant cities, decadent spas and luxurious golf resorts. Miami’s tropical beat is more Latin than laid back, with chic nightclubs lining Collins and Washington avenues. Even larger than Miami is bustling and business-friendly Jacksonville. Naples is said to have more millionaires per capita than any other place in the state. With its many theme parks, Orlando is one of 16

WLG07 Editorial.indd 16

the top tourist destinations in the country. In contrast to the “newest” and “hottest” atmosphere of Miami is the historic town of St. Augustine. Settled in 1565 by Ponce de Leon and his soldiers, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied community in U.S. history, having been founded 55 years before Plymouth Rock. History is preserved at Colonial Spanish Quarter as costumed re-enactors demonstrate cooking techniques, blacksmithing, candle making and other crafts of the 1740s. The actual stone cross that Ponce de Leon and his men displayed in Florida’s sand can be seen at Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Park.

North Carolina With gently rolling mountains and sandy Atlantic shores, North Carolina is a virtual paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether mountain biking at Tsali Recreation Area or catching a record-size walleye from Fontana Lake, opportunities abound. North Carolina may be best known for outstanding whitewater rafting and the numerous outfitters that provide access to rivers like the Nantahala. The nation’s largest artificial whitewater river can be found at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, set on the banks of the Catawba River near Charlotte. Here, boaters can perfect their skills on Class III and Class IV rapids created by re-circulating water. With elevations as high as 6,000 feet, North Carolina

gets its fair share of snow. The winter craze of snow tubing first began at Ski Beech and has spread like, well, a blizzard. Since it doesn’t require the skill of snowboarding or skiing, anyone in the family can do it. After the last winter snow melts away, golfers set out for the more than 500 courses dotting North Carolina, many designed by the fabled Donald Ross. The ancient mountains in Great Smoky Mountains National Park were shaped by eons of wind and water. Extending into Tennessee, this is the nation’s most-visited national park, with most travelers concentrating around Gatlinburg, Cherokee and Cades Cove. A portion of the park can be seen from the twisting roads of the Blue Ridge Parkway; however, the best scenery lies ahead for those with hiking boots and a sense of adventure. Tired of the mountains? Pack your sunscreen for a trip to the beautiful Outer Banks, where you’ll find the tallest dunes on the east coast. The salty waters of the Atlantic were once patrolled by Blackbeard himself, but today, the beaches are patrolled by shell seekers. Many collectors say that the best treasures can be found at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Cape Lookout National Seashore, Shackleford Banks, Hammocks Beach State Park, Wrightsville Beach, 18

WLG07 Editorial.indd 18

and Ocracoke Island — recently ranked by “Dr. Beach” as one of the top ten beaches in the country. For wildlife more exotic than seagulls, spend the day at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. Many consider this to be the country’s largest and finest walkthrough natural-habitat zoo, with more than 1,100 animals and five miles of trails in just the North American and African exhibits alone. North Carolina is much more than lush forests and sunny shores. It’s vibrant cities as well. Raleigh, part of the famed Research Triangle, is best known for world-class museums, historic sites, Broadway shows, sporting events and shopping. Abundant museums, ballet, theater, symphony and art have earned Raleigh the nickname of “Smithsonian of the South.”

South Carolina Life seems to slow down just a bit in South Carolina. Perhaps it’s the proximity to the genteel Lowcountry and its reputation for elegance and grace. Or perhaps it’s the comfort of knowing that no matter where you reside in South Carolina, you’re never more than four hours from a cool mountain hike or a sun-filled day at the beach.

The romantic port city of Charleston was founded in 1670 and still boasts 73 pre-Revolutionary buildings. Stroll the cobblestone streets and take a peek at the private gardens tucked behind ornate iron gates. Wonder among hundreds of historic shops and homes, then browse Old City Market where Gullah women — members of a distinct AfricanAmerican culture — peddle hand-woven baskets. You can almost feel the ghosts of Colonial merchants walking along with you. South Carolina is famous for golf, hosting numerous pro tournaments and charity events each year, including the Celebrity Chef Classic on Hilton Head Island. Hilton Head has some of the best golf and tennis facilities in the South, four exclusive resort communities and development policies that are in tune with nature. Buildings can be no higher than trees and billboards are not allowed on the island. In contrast, Myrtle Beach is famous for high-rise condos, kid-friendly amusement parks, colorful nightlife and more than 100 golf courses. Tiger Woods once described Myrtle Beach as “probably the golf Mecca of the world.” It’s no surprise that the region has a high number of retirees who have moved closer to their favorite playground. The Palmetto State has also been praised for having particularly womenfriendly golf courses. South Carolina is good for business as well. Greenville is home to BMW’s first plant outside Germany and car

enthusiasts are invited to tour the facilities. Greenville’s revitalized downtown won the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2003 Great American Main Street Award. Numerous attractions keep residents and visitors entertained, particularly the Liberty Bridge pedestrian walkway, Greenville Zoo and Roper Mountain Science Center. For an escape from the city, South Carolina’s creeks, rivers and swamps are ideal. The Edisto River is the world’s longest free-flowing blackwater stream, winding from the midlands to the Lowcountry. The tea-colored water, stained by the tannic acids produced by decaying vegetation, welcomes boaters for a leisurely float. Adrenalin junkies can get their fix on the rushing Chattooga, a National Wild and Scenic River. Numerous outfitters and parks make it easy to explore South Carolina’s remote wilderness.

Come Stay in the South With spectacular outdoor recreation, affordable housing and business-friendly cities, it is no wonder the southeastern United States is one of the fastest growing regions in the nation. Once people visit, they usually come back – sometimes for a lifetime. Fortunately, an abundance of welcoming communities makes it easy for families to find the perfect place to call home. And an abundance of golf courses makes it easy to perfect your swing. WLG

The golf course opened in 2005 and has offered limited access for public play. However, the club becomes entirely private on October 1, 2007. The second phase of the master plan has started with construction of the mountain villas. The swim and tennis facilities are scheduled for completion in 20

Currahee Club One of the Premier Golf Communities in Georgia

C

urrahee Club offers a peaceful retreat from the hectic pace of everyday life in a gated, private community offering world-class amenities. Tucked away in the mountains and removed from the chaos of city life, it seems like another world, another time, but Currahee Club is actually only 90 minutes from Atlanta and 60 minutes from Greenville. With just over 800 homes planned on 1,200 acres, only a privileged few will be able to call this gated mountain community home. Homesites are priced from the mid$100,000s for golf view to more than $800,000 for lakefront, and homes are priced from $695,000 to over $1,800,000. Currahee Club is a community that doesn’t just fit in with its surroundings; it’s a community that was built to be a part of them. Golf lovers will be in heaven on the Jim Fazio-designed Currahee Club golf course, a par-72, 7,540-yard, 18-hole masterpiece voted one of the 50 best new courses in the nation by Golfweek magazine. With dramatic elevation changes and stunning views from virtually every hole, the course looks downright challenging. However, it is definitely a player’s course with a well-crafted design that balances difficult shots with generous fairways and few blind spots. But great golf is only the beginning of what Currahee Club has to offer. Other proposed amenities include a world-class 48,000 square foot Golf Clubhouse (now nearing completion), a Tennis Club, Children’s Playground, a community general store, fitness facilities, a swim center, nature trails, a fishing pond and a marina.

24

WLG07 Editorial.indd 24

In addition to the amenities, Currahee Club also takes great pride in their dedication to creating a family-friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy. They even have a Director of Fun and a Director of Adventure on staff that plans activities and events both on and off property for both kids and adults.

Currahee Club is being developed by Bob and Chris Whitley, whose experience includes previous successes on notable properties such as Jack Nicklaus’s home course, the Bear’s Club in Palm Beach County, Florida; The RitzCarlton Golf & Spa in Jupiter, Florida; Colleton River Plantation near Hilton Head; and the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta. Savannah Lakes village & golf clubs The Best in Lakefront Club Living on South Carolina’s Freshwater Coast

T

hose who love the outdoors have long been drawn to the water. Whether your passions include hiking, biking, boating, fishing, hunting, or enjoying a round of golf, water always enhances the experience and natural beauty of any outdoor pastime.

And when it comes to luxury golf club living and water, not many have more bragging rights than the lakefront club community of Savannah Lakes Village. The 4,000-acre community is set along 25 miles of shoreline on one of the country’s biggest lakes. The 70,000-acre man-made lake has 1,200 miles of shoreline — more than the entire coastline of California. Lake Thurmond is part of the chain of lakes along the region’s Savannah River that have come to be known as South Carolina’s Freshwater Coast. Besides being the largest, Lake Thurmond is also considered to be one of the cleanest lakes in the eastern half of the country. The shoreline is 90 percent undeveloped and is destined to remain that way thanks to the federal government’s ownership of much of the land. In addition to the lake, the community is bordered by two state parks and thousands of acres of National Forest land. This is small town America. Uncongested, slow paced, and still immune to the high costs of living that accompany living in, or near, metropolitan areas. Savannah Lakes is a 40-minute drive from the hallowed grounds of the Augusta National and two hours from downtown Atlanta. Although life at Savannah Lakes is refreshingly laid back, 26

WLG07 Editorial.indd 26

it is anything but humdrum. Full membership privileges into the community’s wellness center, dining and social clubs, and private golf courses are included with your homesite purchase. This includes indoor and outdoor pools, hard and clay surface tennis courts, bowling alley, fitness center, ballroom, several private dining options, and a golf lifestyle at a value you have to experience to believe. Only a select group of communities are able to bundle lake and golf amenities together. At Savannah Lakes Village, members take full advantage of both. The community is home to two private golf courses designed by Tom Clark. Though both courses were designed to take the lake into play, each provides a unique and satisfying golf experience. The names of both golf courses reflect the history of the region. The Tara Course, built in 1993, found its inspiration from the famous plantation in Gone With The Wind. The course is lined with stately oaks and pines. The Monticello Golf Course (named after Thomas Jefferson’s Estate) was completed in 2000. The layout is a modern links course with fewer trees and more water. On nine of the 18 holes, water comes into play. The golf clubs host 86 golf events throughout the year, including the annual NGA Hooters Pro Golf Tour, which visits the club each April. For members and visitors, the community has an 80 room lakefront resort, offering tennis, miniature golf, outdoor pool, a luxurious three-bedroom houseboat, and an adjacent white sand beach. Two bedroom townhomes also provide an alternative to the resort rooms for families. With an active membership, a full roster of events, and a flurry of building taking place, these are exciting times at Savannah Lakes Village & Golf Clubs. Contact the community today to arrange a discovery excursion that will leave a lasting impression for years to come. 800-332-0013. www.savannahlakesvillage.net WLG

A

truly unique gem of North Carolina, Sea Trail Golf Resort & Convention Center holds the distinction of being the only resort of its kind in coastal North Carolina. Sea Trail is home to three magnificent courses designed by Rees Jones, Willard Byrd and Dan Maples. The Jones course was also host to one of last year’s U.S. Open Qualifier Rounds for the 2006 U.S. Open. Golfweek magazine awarded Sea Trail with a 2005 slot in its “Best Courses You Can Play” as well as 2004 and 2005 honors of “Best Residential Course of Distinction.” Golf Digest magazine also hailed Sea Trail as one of the “50 Best Courses in Myrtle Beach” for 2005. On-site homeowners and visitors alike enjoy challenging play of these courses, nestled under pine tree canopies alongside various coastal wildlife of nesting osprey hawks, alligators and fox squirrels.

Premier golf is joined with a host of other amenities including indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center and gym, a spa, a licensed massage therapist and activities for the children. The on-site Magnolias Fine Food & Spirits 28

serves breakfast, lunch and dinner under the watchful eye of Executive Chef Thomas Sullivan. The beautiful island of Sunset Beach is less than a mile away from Sea Trail, reached effortlessly with their shuttle buses. Stays ranging from one night to the rest of a lifetime are accommodated by our in-house reservation team and REALTOR® brokers. Sea Trail has one to four-bedroom suites and villas, single family homes, condominiums and newly-released, private interior elevator-equipped townhomes. The Sea Trail staff is fully focused on vacation, retirement, living and business desires. With 62,000 square feet of meeting and event space, Sea Trail can host everything from the most intimate wedding to full-scale corporate business meetings. Almost half that space is located within the Sea Trail Convention Center, an architectural masterpiece designed to have just the perfectsized room for visitors’ needs. It is also equipped to cater banquets, weddings, any audiovisual needs and a plethora of services in between. Along with all Sea Trail has to offer, guests and residents enjoy the wonders of what is missing: namely the congestion, traffic, noise and over-development of larger coastal cities offering the same amenities. Yet leaving the cosmopolitan environment doesn’t necessitate leaving its associated productivity, as Sea Trail hosts state-of-the-art high-speed broadband and wireless connectivity for its patrons, assisted by a tremendously tech-savvy IT staff. Finally, in grand North Carolina fashion, our staff provides an endearing, professional service to all our guests. They are the key to ensuring patrons receive the most from their stay at Sea Trail and all it has to offer. WLG

or some, it is the lure of the small town with the state’s flagship university. For others, it is the desire to escape the traffic and congestion of metro Atlanta. For still others, it’s the outstanding blend of rural scenery and culture that comes with Athens, Ga, and the surrounding areas.

No matter the reason, more and more people are taking notice of The Georgia Club, Northeast Georgia’s premier residential golf community. In addition to a myriad of recreational and lifestyle amenities, homebuyers now have three more reasons to relocate to the area with the opening of the new Oconee Springs neighborhood, the first anniversary its new nine holes on the now 27-hole golf course, and the expansion and renovation of the Clubhouse. Now home to nearly 125 families, the Club will eventually include more than 1,100 homes. The 1,500-acre community, which spans both Barrow and Oconee counties, is located on Highway 316/ University Parkway between Athens and Atlanta, and only a few minutes away from the many offerings of the University of Georgia. Its convenient location offers the quiet lifestyle many desire, with access to the state’s two most dynamic communities. The Georgia Club’s traditional Southern architectural style creates a nostalgic streetscape, and is preserved through an architectural code of excellence. 30

The Georgia Club features a wide-array of home designs — from maintenance-free cottages to properties over an acre in size — that meet the demands of a diverse market. Townhomes are expected to make their debut at The Georgia Club before the end of the year. Community life at The Georgia Club centers on the 37,000 square foot Southern-style Clubhouse, which is currently undergoing a major expansion and renovation. When Phase I of this make-over is complete in Fall, 2007, the Ballroom will be triple its current size, effectively accommodating up to 340 members and guests for special events. The Club also features 27 holes of championship golf designed by renowned course designer Denis Griffiths. Nine new holes were incorporated into the original design in 2006, creating a fresh routing that provides challenges for golfers of all ages and skill levels. In addition to championship golf, there are six tennis courts open to members, a fitness center, and a myriad of special social events.
