Flying Dishman Local Habitat Research dome - discover your local habitat Meet the creatures and species living in your surroundings, like tadpoles, insects or wild flowers. Bring them to your Local Habitat, give them a temporary home, observe & learn and set them free after getting to know them better.
Designer and Weltevree art director Floris Schoonderbeek contributes to the collection as well with yet again a surprising design: the Local Habitat, which calls for more attention to the (invisible) life in the nature in our surroundings. This design takes the ‘bug jar’, used by kids to investigate insects, to a whole new level. It’s a glass bowl with large bubbles with magnifying properties. Inside the bowl, ecosystems can be imitated on a small scale or creatures that live in nature nearby can be investigated closely. This interactive product with educational and explorative purpose will be launched in Milan.
“The more Meet your neighbours you know, the more you care.”
Together with your Local Habitat you will receive a booklet containing information about the creatures and species living in your surroundings. You will be amazed at how much life teems in each pond and ditch. Bring your Local Habitat and the booklet with you on your expeditions, fill it with water, and discover your catch from all different angles. The research dome works best when it’s filled with water, but can also be used to observe small land creatures. Always take the needs of your catch into account and try to minimize your impact on the environment during your expeditions. local habitat event @De Kleine Campus, Arnhem May 2018

Floris Schoonderbeek studied product design at ArtEZ School of Arts in Arnhem. In an ever-changing world, not only do our surroundings change, our needs evolve as well. Floris wants to cater to these new needs as a designer, entrepreneur and concept developer. Practical solutions for a creative existence in a more beautiful world are his motives. Experience, functionality and sustainability are key in his vision. In his studio he creates his concepts, products and (art) works. Floris’ main goal: providing for a more independent and sustainable existence.
“The Flying Dishman offers us the ideal place to take a break and hide from our mad world.”
The Flying Dishman - design by Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout. The unique collaboration with Joep van Lieshout has led to the creation of a spherical lounge island with a base made of recycled plastic. The name of the lounge island refers to The Flying Dutchman, the myth of a ghost ship doomed to sail the seven seas forever. This ongoing travel underlines the continuous circle of recycling; the current fate of the oceans and the plastic soup’s contradiction between sustainability and ecological disaster. The ‘dish’ invites people to take the time to relax, take a nap, or have sex on the comfortable human nest. As befits a captain on his forever sailing ship. Different materials have been tested to produce the Flying Dishman, but the first products will be made from recycled waste containers. These containers are collected at the recycling plant at Van Werven, where they sort, clean and roughly grind the containers. In order to be able to use the material for rotational moulding the material is micronized at the production facility to 400 microns. This powder is perfect for the production of the Flying Dishman. Due to the constant source of the material and the consistency it’s possible to achieve a high percentage of recycled material in the Flying Dishman and guarantee strength at the same time. The Flying Dishman is strong enough to support multiple people at once. The strength is further improved due to clever engineering of the shape of the bowl and making use of a PE foamed layer behind the outer shell. This also means that the product can be made out of one material which makes it very easy to recycle the product again at the end of its life. dimensions 42x195x195 (hxwxd) cm weight 35 kg | 77 lbs

“Sculptor, visionary and enfant terrible.” At age sixteen, Joep van Lieshout got accepted at the Rotterdam Academy of the Arts. He quickly rose to fame after graduation, with projects ranging from easy-clean designs to the non-functional area of art. Joep lives and works in Rotterdam, where he founded his own studio ‘Atelier van Lieshout’ in 1995. Together with a team he creates objects that push boundaries and bring architecture, art and design together. Recurring themes and motives in his work are those of systems, power, autarky, life, sex and death.

Rabat Shelving After modern wooden shoes and cooking accessories, Lex Pott brings another design to the Weltevree collection: the Rabat Shelving. The inspiration comes from the iconic profile of overlapping wood of sheds and houses in Sweden. For the Rabat Shelving this architectural technique has been turned around, creating a shelf support in which wooden shelves are easily placed. By doing this, you create functionality on the inside, while the exterior stays smooth. It makes for a great room divider, as well as a uniquely refined closet for storing things outdoors.

“We strive to create enduring designs which are meaningful to people and their environment.” Australian-born designer Tom Fereday grew up in England where he studied at the Wimbledon School of Art, before completing an honours degree in Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. He went on to found his sole practice in 2012, specializing in product and furniture design. Important to his design vision is the principle of honest design, which celebrates the materials and manufacturing processes behind furniture and products.
Lex Pott is a Dutch designer who works from his own design studio based in Rotterdam. He studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, The Netherlands and graduated cum laude in 2009. In his work, Lex Pott returns to the origin of the materials he uses. Lex: “My designs are often based on the use of pure and natural materials. I try to bring them back to their essence: the material. In the case of my designs for Weltevree that’s wood and natural stone. I always strive to create a certain harmony in shape, function and context.”
Spade set The Spade Set by Australian designer Tom Fereday is a bistro set which consists of a round three-legged table and matching stools. The design celebrates a detail that is usually hidden, but deserves to be highlighted: the traditional spade junction. The legs are connected in a similar way to a spade’s socket connection and the unique table top is formed out of a single piece of metal, pushing the boundaries of metal forming. Since the metal is zinc plated and powder coated, it is perfect for either indoors or outdoors.

Woodstock
Serpentine
When enjoying a fire, having a supply of firewood within reach is important, but where do you store it? With this question in mind, Dirk Wynants designed the Woodstock. Dirk: “I take great pleasure in On a warm day designer Tom de Vrieze creating reliable products that make life longed for a way to cool off in his own garden. Stringlight
Poplars
“The Stringlight turns any location into a special spot.”
The Poplars are a design by Lex Pott. These shoes are unmistakably inspired by the cultural legacy of the designer: the Dutch wooden shoe. Lex decided to redefine this iconic footwear after he visited an exhibition about resin and wood.
Floris: “The Stringlight turns any location into a special spot. The open space around your tent will become your garden, a place underneath the trees is transformed into a living room and an industrial hall becomes a restaurant. The glass lampshades turn a standard flat cable into a charming lamp cord for indoor and outdoor use.”
Lex Pott: “The wooden shoe is an iconic wooden product, but its design has been untouched for years. A good reason to redefine this icon.” Lex used the material – poplar wood - as a starting point, but the history was central to the redesign as well: “After all these years, it’s still a convenient and natural shoe for gardening. By giving it a new silhouette and a more refined look, I wanted to gear up the wooden shoe for the future. Redefining such an icon for modern life is a dream come true.”
“The neutral look of the Woodstock draws all the attention to the beauty of the firewood.” “I don’t like too much
firewood and keep it near the fireplace. The neutral look of the Woodstock draws all the attention to the beauty of the firewood. If you need to restock – or need to transport heavy objects - you can use the Trolley.”
The mouth-blown glass lampshades of the Stringlight make for cheerful lighting. This design is by Floris Schoonderbeek.
Sheppard
Tom: “I don’t like too much blah-blah. I prefer simple designs like the Serpentine. The shape is reduced to a minimum, a certain logic: form follows function. This resulted in an art-deco-look.”.
Carrier
The Serpentine is lightweight, takes little space and can easily be moved around. All it needs is a garden hose to connect it to and the shower is ready for use.
“It is a space-saving piece of furniture that’s ideal for smaller spaces.” The Carrier is a design by Thor ter Kulve. This Dutch designer currently resides in London, where he pursues a more self-sufficient and minimal lifestyle. His life on a boat – with a wood-burning stove as his main source of heat – inspired him to create the Carrier. Thor: “Chop your wood, light a fire and sit down: it’s a daily ritual for me. The only improvement it needed was the right toolbox. The Carrier makes transporting firewood or other belongings much easier. At the same time, it is a functional seat that provides extra storage underneath it. It is a space-saving piece of furniture that’s ideal for smaller spaces.”
Sheppard, designed by Floris Schoonderbeek, consists of 12 dots, elastic bands and steel screws that can be attached to a wall, allowing you to fill your wall with natural sheep skins or blankets. You pick your own lay-out so you can create a soft textured wall in every room of the house.
“Feel at home & comfortable, surrounded by a flock.”
