Letter from the Editor I

n addition to being the Chief Editor for this magazine I am also a poet. I’ve been writing, recording, and performing poetry for 10 years. About 3 years ago I wrote a single line that meant enough to me on its own that I didn’t feel the need to integrate it into an existing poem or write a new poem around it. It became my personal mantra. The line is: “The future is enormous, unseen but gorgeous.” Simply put, that’s how I feel every day. It’s why I jump out of bed every morning ready to rock out. I see the future as this unknown, but potentially beautiful opportunity for creating the life that I envision. And nothing makes me stand behind that motto more than publishing this magazine. Even though it has caused more than one nervous breakdown and pushed enough tears out of my face to fill up a bathtub, I can’t help but see WeMerge Magazine as an amazing chance to do something significant and meaningful with my life, while also bringing the inspiration for significance and meaning into the lives of local artists, musicians, businesses owners, and readers. The “enormous, unseen but gorgeous” future I see in my mind is one where WeMerge is way more than a just magazine. I see a future where WeMerge is held up as a recognizable and beloved brand – a brand that includes a print publication, an active internet presence, and a reputation for producing amazing live events for art, music, networking, and good old fashioned fun. Our events are the main ingredient for getting the community involved in what we’re doing and the driving force behind arriving at our destined enormous and gorgeous future. So please visit our website, sign up for our newsletter, and stay informed of our upcoming events. I want to see you there. Our Creative Director, Dwayne Adams, wants to see you there. We want to see you there, and we want to merge with you. That’s what we do. You play a bigger role than you might think in the growth of this brand. Also, agoalthatIhavehadsince 2007 is to perform my original poem, “Half Hearted,”on The Ellen Degeneres Show. You can help by going to www.RendaWriter.com to sign my online petition. ith Miami’s yearly Art Basel event in December being literally one of the largest and most well known art events in the world, I figured I’d wait until about a week after it was over to contact artist Daniel Fila to interview him and gather info for his WeMerge cover story feature. Knowing that he was extremely involved in the event and had his art shown in several places as part of it, I figured I’d give him some time to decompress. When I arrived at his studio in the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District, I was greeted by a relaxed and accomplished “postBasel” version of Daniel Fila. Happy to talk about his experience at the 4-day event, as well as other topics, we started chatting

after I noticed the eye-catching graphite drawings sketched directly on the walls of his studio. As part of the “Lead Poisoning” exhibit at his studio created especially for Basel, the drawings were part of a theme that emphasized the importance of Fila’s roots – his humble beginnings with only a lead pencil and a pad. Various framed pencil drawings were hung along with more current paintings, all placed between the sketches done directly on the wall. When I asked about the wall sketches Daniel’s response was a very clear answer that made perfect artistic and metaphysical sense; “What’s going on with the walls here is that it’s a metaphor to say that there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes… beyond the surface of the painting… the inner workings of my psyche. A lot of pop art doesn’t have

“What’s to Come” a lot of soul. It’s a representation of the depth of it all. The walls felt too still without having anything besides the canvases.” This concept was no doubt a hit with the Art Basel crowd, and his sales during his various showings during the event definitely proved that he was a hit with the art buyers. Moving on to discuss some of his paintings individually, he went to grab his portfolio from off of the desk, and that’s when I noticed his degree from Columbus College of Art & Design in Ohio hanging on the wall. A framed Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration, an impressive accolade and a valid reminder that the graffiti artist known as Krave is also

Daniel Fila, a college educated and trained professional artist with high profile corporate clients. One of his first big clients was MTV, who commissioned him for the piece called “The 5 Elements” for the 2004 Video Music Awards, which is the first piece in his portfolio that he shows me. A distorted and constricted look at people trying to practice the 5 elements of hip-hop culture in a closed space, the piece represents how the modern world has almost asphyxiated the basic elements of hip-hop culture that paved the way for the rap music today. Important not only for its meaning and its commentary on hip-hop culture, the piece is also important as a milestone in Fila’s career. continued on next page

“The 5 Elements”

It was the sale of that piece to MTV that gave him the means to move out and open his first studio, a great starting point to track the evolution of Daniel Fila and his progression in monetizing his talent and reaching the status he has today in the professional art world. From there we moved on to Daniel’s introspective tour of the various symbols inside of his painting, “What’s to Come,” which hangs on the outside wall of his studio. With freelance WeMerge videographer Lew Lautin filming alongside us, I am glad that we are able to capture all of Daniel’s personal narration of the painting’s meaning in video form, for his fans and our readers to watch on the internet as a supplement to this article. Check YouTube.com/

“Hear No Evil”

PhotomanLew or the WeMerge video blog on our MySpace page to see the clip. (Read the article about Lew Lautin on pg. 6) Fila’s discussion of the next piece in his portfolio tour was about “Hear No Evil,” which features his signature “fresh monkey” character. In describing the piece he let me in on how the monkey became his signature image after a college classmate saw him drawing it and stated, “that’s a fresh monkey.” The compliment stuck, and Fila went on to make the “fresh monkey” into the iconic symbol for his Krave Art brand and an image seen randomly placed

throughout the greater Miami area. As Daniel closed his portfolio, we moved on to discuss the variety of corporate clients he’s had, including Mini Cooper, Ritz Carlton, Burger King, and The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, and that’s when I not only felt inspired, but also felt assured that once I had written his story, this would be the part that would inspire other artists out there. Other artists should know that it is very possible for that street kid doing graffiti art and doodling deeply personal pencil drawings in a sketch book always has the capacity to evolve into a professional artist with an A-list of corporate clients, like Daniel Fila did. Before rounding out our time together, Fila takes a moment to mention how happy he is the be one of the resident artists at The Bakehouse Art Complex, and how other young artists, such as Mike Rivamonte (read about him on page 6) and Alex Yanes (featured in our Who’s Next Gallery) are part of the revitalization and growth of the roster of artists involved with the complex. Of course no discussion of Daniel’s life as an artist and his body of work would be complete without a mention of his famous “Erin Wall,” which evolves every year with Art Basel, and is now the “Adam & Eve” wall, complete with male and female nude illustrations and now, a baby. He told me of how he updated the wall during the latest Art Basel, bringing our discussion full circle, and after leaving the Bakehouse, I head East on 36th Street and make a left on Biscayne Blvd. Right after passing the Denny’s, I see the “Adam & Eve” piece in person and am reminded of how much of a pleasure it was to talk with an artist who has taken his love for beautifying public walls and turned it into a business, a successful brand known as Krave Art, the brainchild and the result of all of Daniel Fila’s hard work, education, and commitment to his craft.

ome take interest in being a DJ by playing with their older brother’s equipment when he’s not home, and for others it can come quite naturally as they make believe in their heads that they are the greatest internationally known DJ there is, until one day it’s manifested into real life. No matter how it starts, there are many DJs that have mastered the game, leading on to teach others how to be great as well.

At the Scratch DJ Academy, located in Miami (in the heart of the Design District) you can learn from the masters - all the things from DJ basics to intermediate to advance club mixing and scratching, and even music production. Whatever you need to get started with a great career or just a hobby at heart, you can learn it here. The Scratch DJ Academy was founded by the late Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC and has always operated under one goal: to provide unparalleled education and access to the art form of the DJ and producer industry. Headquartered in New York City, but with locations in Miami and Los Angeles, Scratch has taught hundreds of thousands of students from all 50 states and from over 30 countries. Along with all the other things that you will learn while attending, you can be sure to be taught

By Kadeidra Ward a.k.a Poetic-ly Yours by celebrity instructors, teaching from a copyrighted curriculum, with state-of–the-art-equipment. While visiting the Miami Scratch location I had the pleasure of interviewing Jaime Keogh, a.k.a. DJ Immortal, who is also an instructor, along with DJ DZA who is currently a student. As soon as I stepped in I was greeted with welcoming smiles and hugs. They both were “cooler than a polar bear’s toe nail, oh hell there they go again…” (Outkast) A tour of the academy was given before we got down to business, as I was in amazement of all the various student art work that lined the walls of the different rooms. The different colors on the walls created the melody of artistic vibes, allowing one to be free with creativity and personality, with no limitations in being and doing themselves.

type of genre, from up state New York to the bottom of South Florida, rocking it out with the latest rock, hardcore and soft, from Tupac to Old Skool, from Sade to the Jackson 5, Cold Play and Green Day. Trust me, while doing the interview I found myself dancing in my chair, and eventually standing up next to him doing a few two steps of my own. DJ DZA was awesome; quickly I wanted to book him for all types of gigs, and request mix tapes to be made. And of course you know I couldn’t leave without testing out the waters and getting up on the wheels of steel

The Scratch DJ Academy was founded by the late Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC As the interview begins, DJ Immortal, who’s dressed casually with skater type jeans (slightly fitting) and a cool black wife beater, places his feet on the desk in a crossed position as he begins to describe a typical day at the academy. A place for all walks of life, every gender, from across seas…. he continues to say that their students vary in age from nine to sixty, and are all there for one reason, the love of music and the passion to learn or become better at this wonderful art. Because, let’s face it, what would the world be without music? So now we have created a bond as I eagerly listen to the many stories behind the scene of DJ-ing. DJ DZA, a nineteen year old student chimes in to anxiously explain how the academy in itself has changed him as person. When asked to show his skills of what he has learned he eagerly jumps up, leading the way to a room full of turn tables and everything else that is needed for the craft. Impressed by what I heard, the skill he displayed when transitioning from one song to the next was smooth like silk on shaved legs. (Yes, it was that smooth.) We took trips to every

myself. So DJ Immortal took over and showed me a few quick things. It seemed as if he scratched the lines of the records that was playing, had me feeling as if I was in a “cy-pha,” wanted to “Mic Check… Mic Check,” bust out a rhyme or two. It was painless, I must say, like learning how to ride a bike for the first time. Nervous was I, but I got over it quick, and had “DJ-101” down in no time. All in all, being at the Scratch DJ Academy for that day was a great experience. I learned so much about what goes down behind the scenes in the DJ and music production world. I learned that with them it’s first about educating and access. They are again the only school in the world with a copyrighted curriculum and unlimited access for students to practice without having to invest thousands of dollars in equipment. Now located in the Design District of Miami, the school has been given an all a new facelift. The school also stands for giving back, and works with various charities throughout the year. For more info on charity works being done, or for any other info, log on to the website at www.Scratch.com. Free DJ classes are also held. Call and RSVP for your spot at (305) 535-2599.

Recipe for Success www.MRivamonte.com

When Lew Lautin walked in and greeted me he very naturally opened up the conversation with what was on his mind at the moment… the cooking he had done earlier that day. He had spent the day cooking because, as Lew puts it, “I love cooking… So I research it. I learn about it… and I do it.”

66

As a multi-genre artist, Lew practices photography, videography, and acting… and pursues them all with the same zest that he described when talking about cooking. Having retired 4 years ago after a successful life in business, Lautin now devotes his time to staying active in the local arts community. Appearances on four episodes of the TV show, “Burn Notice” and two episodes of the HBO series, “Dexter” are just two of the more notable credits to Lautin’s name. He was also seen for 7 seconds in a 15-second commercial that aired eight times during the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. As a filmmaker, Lew’s recent achievements include winning the award for “Best Film” at the 2009 Red Eye Exhibit at ArtServe in Ft. Lauderdale for his 3-minute film, “Birdman of Montmartre.” It was shot during a 2 ½ month stay in France, where he took hundreds of photographs and shot over 40 hours of film. The artistic short film was also shown at the 2009 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. Lew plans

to create a whole “Life in Paris” series of short films from the 40 hours of compiled footage. He also did a 1-man exhibit of his photography from Paris at Alliance Francaise de Miami entitled, “Art & Soul: Paris Retrospective.” After hearing of all of his achievements in the arts, I couldn’t help but ask him, “What’s your secret? How have you achieved so much?” His response was simple: “There is no substitute for hard work. Nothing comes easy… unless your name is Hilton, or Vanderbilt. You’ve got to work your ass off to succeed in life.”

Lew Lautin Where will his next success come from? He’s gathering the ingredients now to cook up his next project… the directing and filming of a 30min-1hr scripted movie. The main ingredient, of course is the script, which is why he is looking for submissions from all the talented writers out there that may be reading this. Contact him to discuss submitting your script.

Broward

Folk Club

WWW BROWARDFOLKCLUB COM Keeping the Music Alive in South Florida

O

pen mics, house concerts and song swaps, oh my! These are just a few of the musical events the Broward Folk Club promotes to keep folk and acoustic music alive. Now, I’ve heard of and have even been to a fair share of open mics before, but I never dreamed there was such an underground of folk lovers who not only had a club, but who are such enthusiasts that they open their homes to folk performers from far and wide to host private jam sessions right in their own back yards! One of these enthusiasts is Arlene Boumel, who happens to be the President of the Broward Folk Club, which was founded in 1988 as a private, nonprofit group and has survived throughout the years largely thanks to grants and donations (which are getting harder and harder to come by as our economy changes and as musical program funding continues to suffer drastic cuts) and is supplemented through annual membership promotions where a single member can join for a mere $20, families for $25. I had the chance to catch up with Arlene recently, just as she was preparing for the BFC’s annual “RoundUp, a one day special event featuring “9 continuous hours of very diverse music at an inside venue, which was held at the club of the same name in Davie, FL on January 17th. CA: Tell us a little about yourself, your musical background. AB: Well, I grew up in the sixties and listened to folk and from an early age; I always loved it. As a child I attended a summer camp in the Poconos, PA which was run by the founder of the Philadelphia Folk Festival and so I was exposed to live acoustic music then; there would always be someone strumming a guitar and we’d have sing-alongs and the camp held concerts that really made music come alive for me. In real life, I’m a psychotherapist and not really a musician, but I do love to play guitar. CA: How did you come to be involved with the Broward Folk Club? AB: I started mainly as a volunteer who was just helping out a friend. I started attending song-swaps and just helping out, and then I offered to host some musicians and held a house concert in my home. It put me in touch with all those great memories of my

8

By: Carol Ann Conover

childhood and I found myself becoming more and more involved. Finally, my friend noticed how much time I was devoting to different events and how much pleasure I got from them and suggested that I join, so I did, in 1994. I was pleased to find in our community others who loved this type of music as much as I do. Eventually, I was elected President and am currently in the 2nd (and last) year of my term. CA: What is it about folk and acoustic music that makes it able to transcend nearly any age group? AB: Well, at any of our events, the largest age group there are people like me, who grew up in the sixties and who always had these festivals with live music happening everywhere, but we do see a fair share of young faces who love live shows. What the Broward Folk Club has done is try to bring the best of the old stuff and mix in some new artists who are just getting into the scene. Our “Nostalgia Seriesâ€? featured wellknown groups like the Limelighters, Chad & Jeremy, Zoe Lewis and a few others, but we’ve also featured Shauna Sweeney who is 24 and Jacob Jeffries who is also in his early 20’s; young and new artists whose music is just terrific. We try to keep the music going in this way and the people who love music are usually open to hearing new artists‌they just love a good show. CA: What is the best way to keep up with what’s going on with the Broward Folk Club and get in on some of the great events you hold? AB: Become a member! That’s the best way; you get our newsletter and reduced admission for many events. You can read all about how to join on our website, BrowardFolkClub.com or you can follow us on Facebook. We just really want to get people involved and so really, everyone is welcome, member or not, so the invitation is there. If you love good music and a live show, the Broward Folk Club has something for you. CA: Thanks so much for your time, Arlene. I’ll definitely be checking out your events coming up‌I can’t wait for my first song-swap! AB: You’re very welcome and thanks for your interest in our club. We appreciate what you are doing to give your support to the musical community.

tlantic Avenue in Delray Beach was a flurry of activity on that December Friday night as I made my way to The Hurricane Bar and Lounge. The Avenue was lined with tourists and locals making their way in and out of the clubs, quaint shops and trendy restaurants. The holiday decor and lighting made for a calming backdrop to the steady bustle of traffic. Just as I was about to wonder where on Earth I was going to park, the sign for 6th Street appeared and I was able to dodge the valet vultures and make a couple of right turns into what appeared to be an alley leading to a secret hideaway. I was fortunate enough to find a newly opened up spot in the amply-sized parking lot, right by the venue’s front door. I made my way inside where I was greeted by Tim Tilson, lead singer and guitarist for local rock band, Grindstone, who had just finished a set as I was walking in. Tim was putting on an acoustic show with his band-mates, Aldo Marchant on guitar and vocals, Dustin Yager on bass, and fill-in drummer, Darin Scott, who was sitting in for Chris Guazzelli. I said my hellos to the rest of the band and made my way in search of Pasqual Renich, owner of the club. A veteran in the bar business, Pasqual moved to South Florida in 1980 from Philadelphia, PA with 10 years of experience in the biz already. He spent the next 25 plus years at the popular Delray restaurant and bar, Boston’s on the Beach. About 3-1/2 years ago, when the owner sold the bar to the Marriott, Pasqual knew it was time to cash in some real estate earnings from the market boom and invest in his own club. He found the perfect location, completely gutted the former bar, and transformed it into what is now one of the Avenue’s hidden treasures. “I built a bar that I would like to hang out in,” Pasqual explained. “The inside of the bar is from a bartender’s perspective and the outside is from a customer’s perspective.” His plan seems to have worked quite well; he has managed to keep 5 out of 6 of the same staffers since opening the bar back in 2006. In addition, many of the local Avenue employees flock here after work for some of the most generous In-the-Biz discounts around. Even the band of the evening, Grindstone, has a long history with Pasqual - he’s booked them at Boston’s and now at the Hurricane for the past seven years. Speaking of Grindstone, these guys were really killing it with their rocked out acoustic versions of everything from Dave Matthews and Incubus to

Of course, it was during that month that everybody cleaned up their act and all the mayhem and debauchery came to a screeching halt (Sorry, Aldo). Neon Black played the typical South Florida band circuit for a few years before changing into the current lineup which includes Chris and Dustin. Book Review

“…that defines the light”

By Renda Writer

By Anthony Pepe & D. Tori Morgenstein

W

hen Anthony F. Pepe and D. Tori Morgenstein first published their collaborative book of deeply meaningful poetry back in 2005, it was clear that these two were in it for the long haul. Now, at the top of 2010, they have gained back the publishing rights from their former publisher and are issuing a second edition of the book. They will never quit promoting “...that defines the light” because it’s way more than just a book of poetry. It’s a poetic look at the horrors of domestic violence, an epic testament to what it really is that defines the light - the darkness. The enduring crusade to promote this book and get it read by everyone continues today, through Pepe’s publishing company, Ghost Post Publishing. The two “warrrior poets” have crafted a book that pulls no punches and is never short on good old fashioned, in-your-face truth. Pepe adequately sums up the overall feeling of the book by saying, “…my best words come from my worst pains, my darkest places shine the brightest lights” in the poem, “Words Lost.” Morgenstein writes with similar intensity in the poem, “While You Were Sleeping,” where he says, “a large hand on a small thigh/ squeezing tighter, her tearing eye/ unable to stop, deeper he pried…/ all within the privacy of your own lie.” Morgenstein’s message continues

Has brought you the following books “Funky Gorilla Fist”

in the poem, “Sunday Mornings,” which opens up with the line, “It’s just what happened to you. It’s not who you are,” a strong reminder that incidents of being victimized should not factor into one’s self identity, that we are bigger than the things that happen to us. And nowhere in the book do the poets cut more to the chase than in Pepe’s short poem, “Simple Question,” where he simply says, “Is he/ the man/ you want/ your son/ to be?” Although the subject matter is harsh, this book really should be required reading for all ages. What better way to educate people about an important social issue than to use poetry? The whole idea here is prevention. If just one of the poems in this book somehow does its job of preventing even one more situation of domestic violence, then it’s done its job. And what’s great about the book is that most of the poems are short, making it that much easier to take in the message piece by piece. This book is recommended reading for anyone who has ever lived through a domestic violence situation, but more importantly, it is for those who haven’t. It’s prevention… through poetry.

The Big News

by Renda Writer

T

he big news coming out of Digital Media Arts College in Boca Raton these days is two-fold. First, there’s the grand opening of their brand new campus in May, and second, there’s the announcement of its fourth annual scholarship contest, open to all interested high school seniors. The scholarship contest requires the submission of a completed entry form and 3-5 pieces of original artwork before March 31st. The top 30 semi-finalists selected by the DMAC faculty panel of judges will be invited to participate in a one-day, two-round art competition to take place during the grand opening of the new campus. One full undergraduate scholarship and four partial scholarships will be awarded to the winners. The second round will require participants to pick from one of three themes (Mythology, Environmental, and Surrealism) and will give them each 4 hours to create their submissions. So not only is this big news,

but its big news that you can be a part of. Those interested in entering the scholarship competition can request an entry form by emailing Mike Arsenault at marsenault@dmac.edu. The new campus will help DMAC to become even further immersed in the art cultures of Palm Beach and Broward Counties and will allow it to get more involved in preparing its students for work in the growing digital arts industry that is making its way to South Florida, as evidenced by the presence of gaming companies, such as Shadows in Darkness (www.shadowsindarkness.com) in Coral Springs and Digital Domain is opening a section in Port St. Lucie (www.digitaldomain.com). The message behind all of the big news coming from this college is clear. Digital Media Arts College is committed

to the role it plays in the growing digital creative scene and is expanding along with it. Prospective students don’t need to go to school in other parts of Florida to get the education they need to enter the digital industry. They can get exactly what they need right here, and never have to leave the vibrancy of our digital arts community. Contact the school to arrange a tour and learn more about what it offers, and if you know anyone interested in digital arts, spread the big news to them too.

“If These Walls Could Talk…” what would they say? They would say that there are two purposes to sharing one’s story. First, the need to find the real meaning life has for you. The second, to tell your life story as a way to leave evidence that we were once here. This story is about Darien , a Native New Yorker from Mount Vernon, NY who as a young boy dreamt with his eyes open. His debut album, “If These Walls Could Talk,” is dedicated to the memory of his father, who passed when he was just 6 years old. In that short period of time, Darien was given the tools to become a man. His mother bestowed her strengths upon him, as he lovingly refers to her as his “Rock.” Darien’s passion for music is his channel for self-discovery - his revolution for creating responsible music with thought

provoking tactics. He describes his music as “Old Soul… You know… ‘you feel it in your gut’ type of music. It’s got a vibe like something old, yet warm and familiar. It’s a mix of things that I have come to enjoy in music and in life.” Darien is a singer, songwriter, and producer who has designed and crafted a medley of intimate stories. This organic debut is personal and selfless. His eloquent and fluent voice, backed by outstanding musicians on this stellar album, easily captivates listeners. Each track has its own personality, yet the album is harmonious. Through his mastery of words, Darien speaks truth and paints pictures of beautiful, uplifting and honest moments. “If These Walls Could Talk” is universal, which lead to Darien being named the Soultracks. com Reader’s Choice “New Artist of the Year.” With songs like the jazzy and earthy “Top Track of the Year” award winning song, “Composure,” this album proves to be sultry, soulful and well-seasoned. Thoughtful lyrics about love and life, combined with infectious music, truly make this 15-track offering a gift from the heart. There are no low points. It’s polished, “grown folks” music at its best. So… Soul Music lovers, stay tuned to Darien and hear the story of his life.

hen it comes to reggae, Lance O is the guy to know, period. He is thee “go-to guy.” There’s really no other way to put it. It’s actually a challenge to write about him without sounding overly flattering, but the founder of the ubiquitous Kulcha Shok Muzik brand works tirelessly to support the reggae scene and is definitely deserving of a pat on the back to say the least. He’s practically a machine, constantly promoting shows like his highly successful “Reggae Sundays,” a free weekly reggae party at Jazid in Miami Beach that has been running continuously now for 3 years. He lights up when he talks about it, “Any given Sunday… it’s always packed… and it’s free. It’s very relaxed. It’s really a free vibe, and I’m very adamant about it staying roots reggae, not much of the dancehall… and the bands are of that

nature that we bring there. Where else can you play Burning Spear at two in the morning and the crowd goes crazy?” Born and raised in Coconut Grove, Lance O was introduced by his late uncle at a very young age to his two main passions in life: reggae and surfing. He has found a way to combine his love for both with his surf parties, which he referenced when saying, “…one of my greatest joys is discovering new music. I’m always looking for bands. I break my bands at my surf parties… every 3rd Thursday at Purdy Lounge in Miami Beach… that’s 6 years running. A surf party is more mainstream, less rootsy.” Lance O has also had the privilege of surfing at some of the most exotic surf destinations around the world, through his work with the folks at Island Hoppers (www. IslandHoppers.Blip.tv), which really

Kulcha Shok The Sticker Phenomenon: You’ve probably seen Kulcha Shok Muzik stickers all over the tri-county area. You might have even seen a sticker somewhere further outside of the area, or even outside of the country. You might have even seen one as recently as today. In fact, look around… there might be one near you right now. Lance O’s stickers are emblems of hard work, smart marketing, and most importantly, good reggae music and good vibes. They are iconic pieces of the history found in South Florida’s reggae scene.

catapulted the Kulcha Shok name to new levels of recognition. Equally impressive as all of his experience in hosting, producing, DJing, booking, and promoting reggae shows for the past 13 years is the fact that he also has an extensive background on the more corporate side of the music business. For the past 3 years, he has played an A&R role for PromoOnly.com, scouting artists to showcase on their Caribbean themed compilation CDs, and he also did consulting and A&R work for Power 96. WeMerge Magazine salutes Lance O for his unyielding commitment to promoting reggae culture. Big ups!!! We encourage you to go out and meet him at one of his events. I’m calling out to you Or whoever’s up there They say if I pray to you You’ll answer my prayer Well, I can’t get a grip I’m kind of losing control I got a real empty feeling Deep down in my soul Can sure use some help Will you beckon my call? Yah, who am I kidding You don’t hear me at all But if you can Would you please hear my case? “Princess of the South, yes I am she/ Don’t know now, just Google me...” a line taken from “Photoshop,” a song already riddled with enough clever lines to prove that teen rapper Kayo is not only a hip-hop artist, but also a witty and precise lyricist. She knows what to say, and exactly how to say it. She lyrically connects with her fans, and the fact that she doesn’t curse makes her appealing to those still living under Mom & Dad’s roof. Lots of artists, especially rap artists, like to put statements in their bios about how they are on the brink of major stardom, or “about to blow up,” but what sets Kayo apart is that these kinds of claims are actually very appropriate for her. Nobody shows as much promise right now as this young and super talented hip-hop artist with a friendly, all-ages image. You will see and hear a lot more of her real soon.

MySpace.com/Kayolona

is extremely excited about his recent successes as an independent musician. Thoroughly espousing the “do-it-yourself” mentality, he takes great pleasure in telling the story of how he started receiving royalty checks from selling his music online. It started when he put together the 7-song EP, “Aging Youth,” and sent it to CDBaby.com. From there it was added to iTunes, and that’s when the checks started coming in. Certainly not motivated by the money only, but more than happy to accept it as validation, MAPS was inspired to put more songs from the “Aging Youth” sessions on a disc, and the 20-song, “Aging Youth II” was created. Citing Oscar Wilde’s novel, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” as a major influence for the songs on both discs, MAPS relates to the novel’s lead character, who sells his soul in an agreement that a portrait of him would age, but he would not. The portrait ages and becomes disfigured every time Dorian commits a sin. “My music is like that portrait. I put my sins in my songs to get them off of me,” says MAPS, who credits Sublime, Blink 182, and Notorious BIG as influences. He is working toward his Bachelors in Recording Arts at Full Sail University in Orlando, but always represents 159th & Collins Ave. in Miami, no matter where his music takes him.

ake a name based solely on the small chance of success in the music industry and members who’ve been together since elementary school and you get Slim2None. Striving to achieve their musical goals, Slim2None was formed seven years ago and is stronger than ever. They’ve stayed together longer than most local bands could even dream. Composed of a Jesse, a James and two Mikes, Slim2None’s commitment radiates electrically from their performances. With Mike Brown (“Brownie”) on bass, Mike McAuliffe and Jesse Ford on gutiar, and James Sanchez on percussion, Slim2None has developed a chemistry emerging from their closeness and legit brotherhood. Influenced primarily by Blink 182 and Four Year Strong, they have a pop-punk sound and a happy-hardcore feel that anyone affectionate of music gravitates toward. Mike writes the lyrics, with assistance and collaboration from Brownie and Jesse. James is extremely talented when it comes to anything percussion, and is known to be a beast on the drums. The band spends a lot of time in Mike M’s garage, refering to it as their “sanctuary,” where it all happens. When their biggest challenge is to prove their name wrong, Slim2None works hours that are comparable to a full time job. But with a passion for music so deep, and keeping it the center of their lives, they don’t seem to mind. On top of that, they have a dedicated fan base that makes it even more gratifying, like when fans drove hours to see Slim2None play at the Juvenile Diabetes benefit show at the Sports Plex. Having traveled all over South Florida, they’ve played at more venues and events than they can count, some of which are Solid Sound Studios (see their ad on pg. 10), Revolution Live, Hollywood Battle of the Bands, Broward County Fair, BSO Picnic, South Florida Fair, and the Our Town. Slim2None targets their age group, but their music is enjoyed by everyone who likes to let loose. They are currently recording at “The Garage” in Boca Raton, with the release of their next CD to be announced soon. Their music has matured with them, and now has a full beard and set of pubes. According to Brownie, their next release is going to blow minds. Keep an eye out for Slim2None, because they’ve got plans to head to the moon. www.Slim2None.com will be functional soon. Aslo check out www.MySpae.com/Slim2NoneAgain.

et’s imagine, for a moment, that you have no political standpoint on the war in Iraq. Let’s forget briefly whether or not you support the war and America’s part in it, and think about the individual soldiers as they kiss their loved ones goodbye, take a cab to the base where they are stationed, and are deployed overseas. Thousands of miles away from everything they know and love, whether you asked them to or not, every deployed American Soldier stands guard at their post, and risks their life for you, for us and for America every day. These men and women eat, sleep, and drink the task they have been given, they do not question the politics behind it, they are there to defend America and without hesitation or question they stand ready to protect a way of life that most take for granted. Now imagine, if you can, that that soldier is your parent, your sibling or your fiancé. Do you think your perspective would change a bit? It’s easy to partake in the out-of-sight-out-ofmind mentality when those that are deployed are people you have never met. These are everyday people. They are that girl you see at the gym, the guy who valets your car at the restaurant, your favorite bartender. These are people just like you; the only difference is they made the decision to help make a difference so that you don’t have to. These men and women ask nothing in return; there is no quid pro quo with them, but it would be nice to know that they are supported by the very people they flew across the globe to protect. That’s where The Forgotten Soldiers Project comes into play. Many musical acts, such as emcee Chopp Devize, have written songs encouraging these soldiers and paying homage to their daily sacrifice for our country. The underground hit “Forgotten Soldiers,” by Devize can be heard on the project’s MySpace page: www.MySpace.com/choppdevize2. The Forgotten Soldiers Project is now searching for musical artists to come together to record a full length album for the soldiers in an upbeat, high school pep rally sort of disposition, a token of our appreciation for the task they have undertaken. Artists of all mediums are encouraged to create something to go into this project; artists, comedians and musicians alike are welcomed in allying to make this album as momentous as possible. Others are invited to make a monetary donation to help fund the project and also to send in pictures of “American Soldiers” for the project’s MySpace page. The project’s goal is to get the album together, and press five thousand copies to send to the troops overseas. The more money that is raised the more copies can be pressed, and inevitably sent to not only the deployed, but to recruiting stations and bases as well. I can’t think of a cooler THANK YOU to send to these men and women. The album will be mixed, mastered and arranged by The Architect. (AKA: CPL Brian J. Spatz, U.S.M.C) and the name behind the scenes for all of this is Reverse Polarity Entertainment and Studios, owned by Brian Spatz (aka: The Architect), Paul Raimondo (aka: Pilot Rai) and Rusty Ellison. If you would like to jump on board, or know others who would, please contact the Project Manager, Jaime M. Jones-Spatz at forgottensoldiers2009@yahoo.com. Deadline for submissions is May 1st. Release date for compilation CD is July 4th.

Yvonne & Garo American politician, Elizabeth Dole said, “We have learned that power is a positive force if it is used for positive purposes.” I love meeting people who are utilizing their gifts and talents with a vision to fulfill a great purpose. During the holidays, I was given the opportunity to interview Garo Gallo & Yvonne Colon, the owners of By The Way Inc. and The Independent Working Artist Network. Through all the hustle and bustle of the season’s festivities, planning events at their warehouse known as The Bubble, and everyday life circumstances, these two individuals still took time out of their busy schedules to answer some of my questions. That proves that Garo and Yvonne don’t just talk the talk, but they truly support the art scene and love what they do. For that, I hail them to be a Power Couple in the industry! Q. Do you think you and Yvonne are a power couple in the arts and entertainment industry? If so why? A. G - WOW… um we’ve never thought of or defined ourselves in that way… we ARE very close individuals easily bored with big dreams and wild imaginations… we’re into pushing each other, our friends, the boundaries, -forward, making things happen. Y - We have no expectations, just goals… and there’s lots of work to do G - I’m not sure if that fits the description OR answered your question (laughs) Q. What kinds of challenges arise from doing business with the person you’re in a relationship with? A. Y - Sharing stresses and deadlines… G - Handling them differently… having to find common ground everywhere, always… can drive you crazy sometimes. Y - We take fighting seriously (laughs)… it’s productive and human to fight G - If you respect your opponent you’ll learn something. Q. How long have you two been together romantically and on the business side? A. G - “Romantically” is so interpretable (laughs). We’ve been doing romantic business for almost six years …unless you count extra dimensions and/or past lives. Q. Whose idea was it to start the Independent Working Artist Network? A. G - When we crossed paths… the second time in 2003, Yvonne was working on By the way (BTW) which was an experiment in community building, various video production projects, and fashion shows; while I had been promoting original underground music and art that I believed in – mostly my friends, at a string of locations, out of necessity… my band also needed shows. This transformed into IWAN. We showcase people “walkin like their talkin,” “living the dream,”… or trying. Supporting them by creating opportunities “became” OUR mission. Q. How long have you guys been in business? A. Y - Since 2003 Q. Why are you in business? A. Y - The love of people and their talents G - To be taken seriously, to not take our freedoms for granted, or to speak out on behalf of others about the lack there of. Y - Creating as many memories as possible G – Fun Q. You guys recently held a fashion show at your venue, what were the ups and down about the event? A. G - It was a hit, everything went smooth –the designers were a blast to work with, the models were great, just… next time, Y/G - NO RED WINE IN THE DRESSING ROOM! (laughs)

WeMerge Power Couple Photography by Johnny Zhang - Interview by Maeva “The Artist” Renaud Q. Do you find it difficult working with artists? A. G - (laughs) Of course! But it’s ALWAYS fun! …Except sometimes, Y - It’s still work. Q. Are you both artists as well? Or do you just like working with artists? A. G - Yes and yes – we are “conceptual people.” Earth IS an installation. Q. When I searched IWAN on Google, I saw you’ve received quite some press. What’s the next big thing for you this year (2010)? A. G - More EVERYTHING! We wouldn’t want to go spoil the surprises now would we? Q. Who’s the “boss” in the relationship? A. G - Tony Danza Q. Outside of business, what do you guys do to relax? A. G - Relax? …HA! Y - …someday Q. Who are some of your favorite artists? A. G - Sheesh! TOOO many to name! And if we leave someone out we’ll be sad… so, - all of them. Q. What would you say to other couples in business with each other? A. G - Draw a line between business and relationship, don’t kill each other, always remember WHY you decided to work together in the first place – if it’s just money… you’re in trouble. Q. Do you think “art” can change the world? A. Y - It has, G - It will, Y/G - And shall continue to.
