This March marks Wem Town Hall’s 5th Birthday, it only feels like yesterday but time fly’s when you’re having fun as they say! In honour of our Birthday we’ve programmed a jam packed few months. We are particularly looking forward welcoming back The Birmingham REP in April with their production Back Down and a glorious dance and world music piece by Ballet Nimba in February. We have a number of fantastic productions from the National Theatre, English National Opera, The Berliner Philharmoniker and The Royal Shakespeare Company over the coming months – you will be spoilt for choice! We will also present a series of exhibition on screen events, the first being a presentation about Vincent van Gogh in March. With exclusive access to the van Gogh museum Amsterdam the event will explore the dramatic story and iconic work of one of the world’s most beloved artists. Led by the irrepressible Idrissa Camara of Guinea Ballet Nimba combines musicians and dancers from West Africa to produce dynamic and exciting dance theatre with amazing musicianship and percussive beats that will delight you. Bagatai was inspired by Camara’s recent trip back to his father’s homeland and delves into the often secretive world of the Baga, a people revered and even feared for their art and beliefs. Shropshire Music Trust: Cabaret Through Time
Friday 13 March 7.30pm Claire Prewer – Soprano Benjamin Frith- Piano Claire and Ben take their audience on a whirlwind tour of Cabaret, which they have presented around the country to delighted audiences. There is something for everyone -and enjoyment for all! Birmingham REP Presents: Back Down
Friday 17 April, 7.30pm A must-see coming-of-age story that is both insightful and incredibly funny. Luke, Zia and Tommy have known each other for forever. With Luke about to leave for university it’s time for one last adventure together. Armed with Zia’s mix CD and a bag of Brummie pride, they set off to conquer Snowdon. But when their jaunt takes an unexpected turn they are forced to face up to the reality of why they needed the trip in the first place. Mumbo Jumbo
Saturday 25 April, 7.30pm A close-harmony, eclectic, semi-acoustic piano-led wonder, Mumbo-Jumbo plays rootsy original and rarely heard stuff in their own inimitable style with no acoustic guitar in sight!! It brings together three top Midlands acoustic musicians/vocalists to produce an ‘Eclectic Acoustic’ sound that is all their own, playing festivals, blues and folk clubs, and theatres across the country. The band’s CD ’Life of Riley’ has had rave reviews for its musicianship and its song-writing, plenty of radio airplay and has gained the band a nomination in the British Blues Awards for Best Original Song/Songwriter. Rosie’s work is often concerned with documenting locations, people and nature, seeking to capture a moment, evoking atmosphere and gently conveying a story. A legacy of the earlier community Media Arts programme that ran from Wem Town Hall, MediaActive is a new arts organisation that continues to work closely with WTH whilst bringing new opportunities and investment to the area.

BFI Film Academy
The British Film Industry’s gold standard talent development programme is a national programme that aims to help train and inspire the next generation of British filmmakers, supporting talented and committed young people aged 16-19 to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge and skills to help make a career in film and animation a reality. This project is funded by the British Film Institute (BFI) - the lead body for film in the UK - in partnership with BAFTA, Pinewood Studios and the Department for Education

Adventures in Alternative Cinema
Adventures is working with young people across Shropshire, exploring cinema “beyond the multiplex”. Our Young Programmers are discovering specialised film and thinking about new ways to encourage other young people to try something “un-hollywood”, whilst also making better use of their local community cinemas, like WTH. This initiative is supported by Film Hub North West Central, proud to be a partner of the BFI Film Audience Network.
A creative arts and heritage project working with young people, historians, artists, archives and museums. Looking at first hand accounts of WW1 including the work of war artists, poets and journalists, along with archive material, photographs, film, diaries, and letters from the frontline and home, to understand better, and to share, the “stories” of WW1 Funded by Arts Council England through the Shropshire Council WW1 commemorations programme.
EXCITE Programme
Encouraging eXpertise in the Creative Industries through Training and Enterprise a new partnership initiative for young people, that has recently attracted investment from Arts Connect West Midlands. A programme of activity will be launched shortly, offering creative and employability skills development through work experience, apprenticeships and internships.

An initiative of MediaActive and Wem Town Hall, and supported by Film Hub North West Central, Adventures seeks to engage young people in specialised film; broadening the horizons of tomorrow’s filmmakers, commissioners and audiences. Young Programmers groups meet in Wem and Shrewsbury, exploring the often unchartered territory of non-mainstream cinema. During February and March watch out for cinema and pop-up screenings, special
