Curious Shoes is an interactive theatre performance for people living with dementia and their loved ones; a chance to see a piece of high quality theatre, without it being a stressful or worrying experience. Exhibition On Screen: Van Gogh and Japan (12A)
Tuesday 4 June, 7pm (1 hour 25 minutes) “I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based – VAN GOGH & JAPAN at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – one can see why. Though Vincent Van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. In this little known story of Van Gogh’s art we see just how important his study of Japan was, further exploring the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.

Gallery Esther Forse Thursday 2 May – Thursday 30 May Esther Forse is currently a Year 13 student at Thomas Adams School. She painted a portrait of her Grandmother ‘Martha’, which the school Art department sent off to the National Students Art Exhibition last summer. Not only did it get in, but, she won the student of the year award. Out of hundreds of schools and around 6000 entries, this was a wonderful achievement.
Ellesmere Watercolourists: ‘Transforming Wem’ Thursday 6 June – Thursday 27 June The group’s work experiments with watercolour techniques such as the use of ‘Quink ink’ with watercolour and Chinese brush work. This year their subject is the streets and buildings of Wem and experiments with the use of colour and free techniques. The everyday is seen in a new light. The mundane, a familiar building, becomes more exotic. Quirky, dramatic and beautiful edifices are uncovered in these familiar Shropshire streets.

Into Film Awards 2019
We were delighted to see two films made through our programme nominated for prestigious national film industry awards recently. From hundreds of entries from across the UK Unlikely Heroes was nominated for Best Film, whilst A Miner’s Story won Best Documentary. Unlikely Heroes, made by a group of 16 to 18 years olds (during BFI Film Academy) uses traditional and experimental animation to share the fascinating story of the role of carrier pigeons during war-time and is now on display at RAF Museum Cosford. A Miner’s Story, made with children from Meadows Primary School, uses archive film, animation and interviews with two lifelong miners to explore Shropshire’s past coalmining community and industry. The two groups of young filmmakers travelled down to the Into Film Awards at the Odeon Cinema, Leicester Square in London for the red carpet event, and had chance to rub shoulders with some of the best of British Film Industry talent, including Eddie Redmayne, Hugh Bonneville, Andy Serkis, and Lilly James. Adventures with Archives
MediaActive has collaborated with local people to unearth a selection of archive footage, hidden treasures held by local, national and international museums and archive collections, and invited musicians and music groups to create and perform new music to accompany the films. To date, we have worked with singer songwriters, local musicians, AGE UK choir The Orchard Singers, and Wem Training Band, to create live cinema events and screenings and exhibitions at WTH, Theatre Severn and RAF Museum Cosford. Wem Town Hall is proud to be offering access to the arts for those living with dementia and memory loss. Dementia Friendly Showings are open to all but will be more relaxed, with lights on and sound level low with specially trained ushers on hand to assist. All timings include a 20 minute interval with refreshments!
