The Royal Opera House Presents: Swan Lake
NT Live Presents: The Last of the Haussmans Thursday 11 October, 7pm, 180mins approx including 20min interval Julie Walters plays Judy Haussman with Rory Kinnear and Helen McCrory as her children in this eagerly-anticipated new play: a funny, touching and sometimes savage portrait of a family that’s losing its grip. Anarchic, feisty but growing old, high society drop-out Judy Haussman remains in spirit with the Ashrams of the 1960s while holding court in her dilapidated Art Deco house on the Devon coast. After an operation, she’s joined by wayward offspring Nick and Libby, sharpeyed granddaughter Summer, local doctor Peter, and Daniel, a troubled teenager who makes use of the family’s crumbling swimming pool. Together they share a few sweltering
Tuesday 23 October, 7.15pm, 180mins approx including two intervals ‘Swan Lake’ is one of the most loved of all classical ballets. It has a magical combination of Tchaikovsky’s music, a compelling story of tragic romance and choreography that allows the very best dancers to show just how amazing they can be. In its story, Prince Siegfried falls in love with the Swan Queen, Odette, condemned through the evil magic of magician Von Rothbart to transform into a swan by day. After trickery at a palace ball prevents the Prince marrying his new love and restoring her to her true form, tragedy is the only means left to him to finally break the spell. The ethereal forms of the swans, illuminated by moonlight, the charged solos for the Prince and Odette and her alter-ego Odile, the machinations of Von Rothbart and the colour of a palace ball – all combine with glorious music, here under the expert baton of Valeriy Ovsyanikov, to make for an evening of inspiration and romance.
BIG SCREEN EVENTS NT Live Presents: Timon of Athens Thursday 1 November, 7pm, 180mins approx including 20min interval Simon Russell Beale takes the title role in this modern day setting of Shakespeare’s strange fable of consumption, debt and ruin, written in collaboration with Thomas Middleton.
dances make a fabulous contrast – the Sugar Plum Fairy is just one of the delights – and Peter Wright’s production tells the story clearly from its mysterious start to its happy conclusion. First seen at Covent Garden in 1984, The Nutcracker is an essential part of Christmas for audiences of all ages.

The beautifully coloured imaginings of the fantasy Sugar Garden and its celebratory
Thursday 17 January, 7pm Running Time TBC Academy Award nominee and Tony Awardwinner John Lithgow (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Shrek, 3rd Rock from the Sun) takes the title role in Arthur Wing Pinero’s uproarious Victorian farce, directed by Olivier Awardwinner Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You and Into the Woods, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, London). In a similar vein to the National Theatre’s smash-hit classic comedies, She Stoops to Conquer and London Assurance, The Magistrate is sure to have audiences doubled up with laughter. When amiable magistrate Posket (John Lithgow) marries Agatha (Olivier Award-winner Nancy Carroll, After the Dance), little does he realise she’s dropped five years from her age – and her son’s. When her deception looks set to be revealed, it sparks a series of hilarious indignities and outrageous mishaps.
