Wem Town Hall Autumn - Winter 2014 Hello and Welcome
We are very pleased to be welcoming back Lulo Reinhardt with his Latin Swing Project in October. We’ve been inundated with requests for him to return after the last concert. Make sure you book ahead so you too can enjoy his unique, mesmerising playing of the guitar. We have a number of fantastic productions from the National Theatre, Russia’s Mariinsky Theatre and Italy’s The Vatican being screened at the WTH Cinema in the coming months. Of note is the hotly anticipated production of A Streetcar Named Desire and your chance to discover the most impressive collection of works of art built up over the last two thousand years from the Vatican Museums – and in 3D! Saturday 18 October, 8pm Lulo Reinhardt: Germany (guitar); Daniel Weltlinger: Australia (violin); Harald Becher: Germany (bass); Uli Kramer: Germany (drums); Sean Mackenzie: Australia (keyboards) Don’t miss out on this unique show of gypsy guitar legend Lulo Reinhardt complete with his top class band. Lulo Reinhardt is, of course, the grand nephew of jazz legend Django Reinhardt. But the family's musical ties run deeper than that for Lulo is also the nephew of the gypsy violin master Shnuckenack Reinhardt and comes from a lineage peppered throughout with highly talented musicians. Lulo represents one of the most unique and distinctive voices in gypsy-jazz music today. His Latin-Swing Project combines pure gypsy-swing music with elements of Latin music such as flamenco, tango, and bossa nova and his ability to make it appear so utterly effortless is enviable.

Francesca Millican Slater Presents: My Dearest Girls: The Letters Book
Friday 14 November, 7.30pm A theatre piece based on the real letters sent between a group of six Shropshire women between 1917-1920. Against a background of war the women tell each other stories of their everyday life; as farmers, office workers, factory hands, nurses and teachers. There is gossip and hint of scandal, reprimands and reprisals,
tales of dancing for royalty, fiancés on the frontline and how to feed 100 chickens while on rations. Combining character, live music and a touch of cabaret along with her warm and witty story telling Francesca tells the tales of the ladies of the letters. From town to country, across work and play, as friendships evolve, history happens and the war draws to a close. Friday 12 December, 7pm The world’s first 3D Nutcracker ballet is a sumptuously traditional production brought to life on the big screen. The ballet opens with a Christmas Eve party and a young girl, Clara, being given a nutcracker doll by her godfather, Drosselmeyer. Later in the evening when Clara sleeps, she finds herself in the midst of the Nutcracker’s battle against the Mouse King and his army of mice. When Clara comes to the Nutcracker’s aid, he is transformed into a Prince and journeys with Clara to the spectacular Kingdom of Sweets where the Sugar Plum Fairy holds a celebration in their honour. 3D is the perfect medium for dance as it illustrates the space between the dancers as well as bringing you right into the performance – a truly immersive experience. Over 50 men were interviewed and asked frank questions, initially about love and sex. One of those men was John. What emerged was a story that is both extraordinary and touching. Years of crime, drug use and struggling to survive lead John on a search in which his life converges with others, in an unexpected place, unknown by most.

Initiative have got together as Wem CombineHarvesters to put on this event. All profits from the market will go to the groups and their local projects.

FILM The Best of British and World Cinema Project
Wem Town Hall, Flicks in the Sticks, and Kinokulture are working together on a new initiative to try to improve the breadth of film on offer to local people at their local cinema venue, be it a full time cinema, art centre or village hall. There are so many films released each week, that because they are not classed as ‘hollywood’ and don’t have big marketing budgets regular film goers don’t get to know about them. We want to introduce you to really great films – they may be foreign language, documentary, classic or archive,

Why do we want new Friends? Wem Town Hall Community Trust was set up in 2006 by local people who sought to re-open the town building as a vibrant centre, for the benefit of the local community and local economy. The Trust has worked tirelessly, with the support of volunteers and partner organisations, and in 2009 we took over the lease and successfully re-opened Wem Town Hall. Today, our lively town centre venue is well used and well regarded by locals and visitors alike, yet still we need to do more to make sure the venue has a sustainable future. Throughout the year, we have to earn enough money to pay the bills. This means that every pound spent in the building helps to keep the doors open! By becoming a Friend you are investing in your local community venue and together we can make sure that Wem Town Hall is a venue that you can be proud of!
