virus situation and current regulations and information about human resources issues. The Lake Chelan Chamber has also arranged small business consultants who are available to consult any business in the valley that needs help figuring out how to move forward. Steele said that the Chamber has committed over $50,000 to small business relief. “We are in the process of purchasing materials and building raised platforms in downtown Manson and Chelan which will create outdoor seating to expand seating capacity for our restaurants and wineries,” he said. “We have been coordinating with the City of Chelan, Chelan County and the Port of Chelan County to direct CARES funding to businesses. “We have also been working with the Liquor Control Board, L&I and the Department of Health to ease restrictions and provide clarity in guidance for our local businesses.” Through the CARES act the two chambers received a large quantity of masks that they have been able to pass out to businesses to supply customers and employees. Steele said as of Aug. 3, the Lake Chelan Chamber had distributed 4,000 masks to visitors and businesses and they have another 8,000 they continue to hand out. The Wenatchee Valley Chamber, the Leavenworth Chamber and the Lake Chelan Chamber have worked together to develop a guide for reopening

and a checklist for businesses to use, Steele said. “We also created and distributed graphics for mask wearing requirements and use.” The Manson Chamber submitted a special application to the County and to the Chamber’s insurance company for eating establishments to utilize parking areas for social distancing until after Labor Day. This program was approved in late July and some businesses have completed applications and begun utilizing their spaces. Conwell said that many main street wineries don’t have sufficient indoor space to keep up with demand while at the same time maintaining the required social distancing between customers. Conwell said visitors to main street have been supportive and very willing to sacrifice parking in order to help the businesses. Morgan Grimm, tasting room manager for Ancestry Cellars in Manson, said July 31 that the winery had been permitted to use the parking area for seating and was waiting for permits from the liquor board. Grimm said that she believes the extra seating area will be very helpful as the winery has limited space inside and only a small patio outside. For more information about what the two Chambers have to offer to businesses, see the Manson Chamber website at moretomanson.com or the Lake Chelan Chamber website at lakechelan.com.

28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand

When Mallory Blessing’s son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he’s not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It’s the late spring of 2020 and Jake’s wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election. There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other? Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother’s bachelor party. Cooper’s friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere -- through marriage, children, and Ursula’s stratospheric political rise -- until Mallory learns she’s dying. Based on the classic film Same Time Next Year (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living, with her confidence-driven brand, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains’ toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store’s security guard, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right. But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix’s desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix’s past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other. With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone “family,” and the complicated reality of being a grown up. It is a searing debut for our times.

American Dirt

270 Upper Joe Creek Rd, Manson, WA 98831

Oprah’s Book Club

by Jeanine Cummins

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. Even though she knows they’ll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books he would like to buy—two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same. Forced to flee, Lydia and eightyear-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. Instantly transformed into migrants, Lydia and Luca ride la bestia—trains that make their way north toward the United States, which is the only place Javier’s reach doesn’t extend. As they join the countless people trying to reach el norte, Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to? American Dirt will leave readers utterly changed. It is a literary achievement filled with poignancy, drama, and humanity on every page. It is one of the most important books for our times. Already being hailed as “a Grapes of Wrath for our times” and “a new American classic,” Jeanine Cummins’s American Dirt is a rare exploration into the inner hearts of people willing to sacrifice everything for a glimmer of hope.

INSIDE STORY

Where desert and mountain forests meet STORY AND PHOTOS BY KAREN LARSEN

Tony Garay, 17, of Sunnyside tries to get his line unhooked from the bottom as his brother, Jose, 14, looks on.

The hiking trail at Alta Lake State Park provides a beautiful view of the lake.

A

l ta Lake State Park, about 30 minutes from Chelan, is a great place to spend a day or to enjoy an overnight camping trip. The park is located off of Highway 153 near the town of Pateros. The centerpiece of the park is Alta Lake, nestled among the dry crags of the surrounding landscape. The waters of the lake are inviting on a summer day, and the park has a swim beach and a roped-off swim area. There is also a dock from which to launch boats, jet skis, kayaks and other watercraft. The fishing at Alta Lake is good, and in the mornings and evenings, fishermen use the dock. Wildlife enthusiasts may also want to head down to the shoreline in the early morning or evening hours. Numerous bird species thrive around the lake, and the waters are full of turtles, which can be viewed as they come up for air. A two-mile round trip trail to the top of a ridge to the west of the lake takes the visitor away from the water and into dry pine forests. From the trail the hiker can take in the foliage, listen to bird calls and enjoy an ever expansive view as the trail makes its way to the top. One can see the Columbia River as it comes into Pateros from the east, as well as its bend southward toward Wenatchee.

Alta Lake State Park has a great beach and swim area for a hot August day.

Visitors enjoy the beach and swimming area at Alta Lake State Park.

The view of Alta Lake and the lower Methow Valley is spectacular. Ponderosa pine forests provide green to contrast with the brown hues of the landscape. The trail is not heavily used, so it is a quiet getaway. The park bears the marks of the Carlton Complex fires six years ago and is a testament to the gradual healing process of the forest. Charred trees can be seen as well as green ponderosas with no marks of fire. The post-fire landscape is beautiful in its own way. There are a variety of camping areas at the park, including RV hookup areas and tent sites. The areas have water and flush toilet bathrooms, as well as showers. There is Wi-Fi ac-

cess. There are several group campsites. Day use facilities include picnic tables, covered shelters and one kitchen shelter. Vehicles are required to display a Discover Pass for day use. For more information about Alta Lake State Park, see the website at parks.state.wa.us/239/Alta-Lake. The Alta Lake Golf Resort is near the park and provides another recreational opportunity. For more information, see altalakegolf.com. The Whistlin’ Pine Ranch is just past the park on Alta Lake Road and also has campsites, cabins and horseback riding by the hour or by the day.
