In Washington we celebrate not one, but two, Washington Wine Months. In both March and August, we spend 31 days celebrating our grape state. In March, spring is in the air and what a great time to sip, and support our local wineries, restaurants and small businesses.
Join in the celebration of Washington wines made in the Lake Chelan Wine Valley. Taste Chelan offers an experience of award-winning wine and delectable cuisines. Local wineries hand-select their most tantalizing varietals — paired and curated with food from local restaurants, chefs, and culinary artisans.
There are many other events and experiences throughout the Lake Chelan Valley in March. The live musical performances are simply amazing with artists
of the likes of Mel Peterson, Aaron Crawford and Chris Ward. Be sure not to miss out on the many St. Patrick’s weekend activities, especially the annual Wayne Kelly Top Dog Parade in downtown Chelan.
If relaxation is more on your plate, check out one of the many Yoga + Wine sessions. March is also a great time to hike/snowshoe on the area trails or ride a bike around the lake. All while soaking up the sunshine, breathing in fresh spring air and enjoying the amazing lake views.
The following pages will give you dates and information about many of these activities in Manson and Chelan. For the most current list please visit www. moretomanson.com/events and www.lakechelan.com/ events/category/event/.
The Lake Chelan AVA is distinguished by a significant “lake effect” that creates mild and favorable temperatures for surrounding areas, resulting in a longer growing season and a reduced risk of frost. You can taste the efficiency of our winter, the quick thaw of spring, our intense summers and a gorgeous harvest in a glass of Lake Chelan AVA wine. Grapes have been grown in the Chelan Valley since before the turn of the 20th century. Today there are more than 30 wineries and tasting rooms around the lake. Each offers a unique and special experience for wine lovers.
What makes the Lake Chelan American Viticulture Area (AVA) so unique in geological terms is that our soil is relatively young with volcanic pumice on top of a glacially aged scape. It’s the kind of soil vines love to snuggle in under the blanket of hot summer days and cool summer nights.

And you provide time and labor to pack the meals! As a MobilePack host, your group has committed to providing the volunteers needed to produce thousands of meals. In the village of King’s Abbot, a widow’s sudden passing gives rise to rumors that she murdered her first husband, was being blackmailed, and was carrying on a secret affair with the titular Mr. Ackroyd.
The next evening, Ackroyd is murdered in his locked study. The town is crawling with suspects but
Five students at Bayview High walk into detention: Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, Cooper, and Simon. Each one with their own defining characteristic: the brain, the beauty, the bad boy, the athlete, and the outcast. It should be a boring afternoon, but before the end of detention Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday Simone planned to use the gossip app he’d created to spill life-changing secrets about all four of his detention mates. All of them are prime suspects, and all of them are also the perfect scapegoats for a killer who could still be on the loose.

2021 Estate
Sunset on the River, Columbia Valley, $32 (125 cases)
2018 Malbec, Lake Chelan, $55 (300 cases)
Judges’ comments: The Little family continues to flash its Midas touch with aromatic whites with this bright and balanced blend of Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. John Little Jr. has taken over the winemaking from his founding father, and this is a remarkable work that’s true to both grape varieties involved as white peach, pink grapefruit and strawberry/watermelon pop out in a floral and fruity fashion that provides an abundance of juicy acidity to clean up the scant amount of sugar. It was one of five Rio Vista wines to earn a gold medal at this year’s judging.

Sigillo Cellars
2019 Relativity, Columbia Valley, $32 (315 Cases)
Judges’ Comments: Washington state winemakers continue to explore, with increased success, the Rhône-inspired blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre known simply as GSM. The Seal family takes a delicious angle by going in the opposite direction — leading their Relativity with Mourvèdre (46%) and following with Syrah (39%), Grenache (8%) and capping it with a delicious dose of Cinsaut. That formula resulted in judges voting it the Best Red Wine of the North Central Washington Wine Awards. Its path to the sweepstakes started with a double gold medal and then best-of-class recognition. The wide-ranging profile offers ripe raspberry, clove, white pepper and forest floor woodsyness amid a structure that’s bold, bright and nothing out of proportion. Obviously it’s showing beautifully in its youth. One judge remarked, “I would drink this any day.”

Rio Vista Wines
Judges’ comments: Oscar Castillo, well into his second decade as the winemaker for this historic family-owned winery, continues to rise up the ranks as one of Washington state’s top winemaking talents. This Malbec emerged as the judging’s best example of the red Bordeaux grape made famous in Argentina and was among the six gold medals made by Castillo — all for red wine. Two of those were for standalone expressions of Malbec. The bright blue fruit notes that fans of Malbec have come to enjoy are here, backed by hints of coffee, caramel, vanilla and earthiness. Its juicy black cherry finish and late grip of tannins will serve it well alongside the dry-rubbed Royal Ranch tri-tip at the winery’s on-premise BBQ in the Vineyard. Siren Song Winery
2021 Belle Tavel Rosé, Lake Chelan, $30 (274 cases)
94 POINTS
Judges’ comments: High-tech refugee Kevin Brown describes the inspiration for each wine he makes. (Many of those wines are produced from grapes he grows.) This rosé of Grenache reminds him of a late-night meal while touring southern Rhône with his wife Holly, who recommends serving this with a summer salad featuring strawberries and pecans. It’s a delightful expression featuring cherry blossoms, white peach, plump raspberries and sweet watermelon. Thanks to the juicy finish, it’s ripe, fruity and clean.

Lake Chelan Winery
2019 Cabernet Franc, Columbia Valley, $48 (321 cases)
Judges’ comments: Barbera is the famous grape planted at lower elevation in Northern Italy, and it’s among the six red varieties the Little family has represented across their 10 acres along the banks of the Columbia River below Lake Chelan. Here’s a remarkable example that offers many classic qualities, which include youthful approachability and layers of cherries and dark plum. There’s strength to its structure, yet that doesn’t distract from the delicate hints of mint and allspice. Complexity comes from the finish of blood orange and Montmorency cherry. It’s a great red to enjoy in the summertime.

Ancestry Cellars
2018 Provocant, Columbia Valley, $30 (209 cases)
93 POINTS
Judges’ comments: Woodinville winemaker Jason Morin has been so charmed by the Lake Chelan wine community that he’s opened a second tasting room in Manson and moved his family to the valley. This Right Bank-Bordeaux blend of Merlot (56%), Cabernet Sauvignon (33%) and Cabernet Franc is easy to enjoy with persistent aromas and flavors of plum, blackberry and vanilla, which make for a very drinkable profile.
