JOIN US FOR THE 12TH ANNUAL MAHOGANY & MERLOT VINTAGE HYDROPLANE AND BOAT SHOW

The 2022 season is no exception with the 1958 winner, U-40 Miss Bardahl, with local favorite Norm Evans, at the wheel coming back to celebrate the 54 anniversary of her victory. All eyes will be on two new restorations: the 1962 U-7 Notre Dame (4th) and the 1979 Squire Shop (2nd) that will both be running on Lake Chelan for the first time.

Please help support the Museum and become a member of H.A.R.M. and follow the boats wherever they perform. Thanks to David Williams, Executive Director of the Hydroplane Museum, the Thunderboats will continue to have a home on beautiful Lake Chelan that we can fall in love with all over again. I hope you will join us at the 12th annual Mahogany & Merlot vintage hydroplane and raceboat show, September 30 - October 2nd at Chelan’s Waterfront Park & Lakeside Marina.

If that doesn’t get you off your couch, this just might. The other boats participating in the regatta are the famous winged wonder 1973 U-1 Pay n Pak, the 1962 U-40 “Green Dragon” Miss Bardahl (3), the 1974 U-8 Oh Boy Oberto, the east coast entry 1957 Miss U.S. IV and the crowd pleasing 1956 U-77 Miss Wahoo replica. Many of these famous hydroplanes were household names back in their day and continue to be 60 plus years later.

As the Summer starts to fade into Fall and the leaves begin to make their magical change, there is one sound that can instantly take you back to that summer heat and suntan lotion. It’s the sound of a piston powered unlimited hydroplane. Boat racing has had a rich history in the Wenatchee River valley, but the Thunderboats have always belonged to Lake Chelan. In 1957, the quiet little community of Chelan, WA with a population 250, literally transformed itself overnight when the unlimited hydroplanes came to town for the first Apple Cup regatta. The love affair with the Thunderboats lasted four seasons (1957-1960) until the quickly growing sport and the thousands of rabid hydroplane fans became too much for the small town to handle and the event was mercifully cancelled.

Fortunately, boat racing did not die on the vine when the Unlimiteds left for bigger venues. For years after, many unlimited teams would still pull their boats over the pass to test on Lake Chelan where it was mostly secluded from the public eye. In the 90’s, the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum started to bring their fleet of restored unlimited hydroplanes to Chelan for promotional fundraising purposes which soon became an annual event during the first week of every October. In 2009, the name was changed to Mahogany & Merlot, the event has steadily grown to become the largest gathering of vintage Unlimiteds in the entire country.

Limited hydroplanes use smaller, typically automotive engines. To keep things fair, each class is limited to a specific size engine. The size of the engine is indicated by a capital letter. The letter also indicates wether the motor is stock or modified. In vintage exhibitions there are rarely enough boats of a specific class to warrant a heat that is entirely made up of a single class, so they are combined into one of four groups: Small, Medium , Large or Flat bottom. The chart below explains the numbers, the size and which vintage heat a class will typically be assigned to.

Lake Chelan This Week Saturday, September 17, 2022 7

The picturesque town of Chelan WA, in the apple and wine region of Eastern Washington has had two love affairs with unlimited racing. The first was brief and passionate but only lasted four years. The second one is still going strong after 27 years. Chelan’s first go around with unlimited racing was called the Apple Cup and started in 1957 when a number of Seattle based teams, disappointed by what they felt was the unfriendly treatment they had received during the 1956 Gold Cup in Detroit, went looking for new locations to hold races on the West Coast; they settled on Chelan, WA. On May 5th 1957 nine boats battled it out on Lake Chelan for the first annual Apple Cup. The race was a tremendous success with tens of thousands of fans driving over from Seattle to see Bill Stead drive William Waggoner’s Maverick to claim the trophy. The following year, Chelan native, Norm Evans electrified his hometown when he drove the brand new Miss Bardahl to victory. In 1959 Chuck Hickling won in the Miss Pay ‘N Save. By 1960 costs were growing and revenues were shrinking. The hand writing was on the wall, and when Bill Muncey and the Miss Thriftway left the race course after winning the 1960 Apple Cup, it would be more then 30 years before the next time an unlimited would run on Lake Chelan in a sanctioned APBA event.

minutes later, Mitch took Ted’s great Grandson, Ron Jones III out for a ride too.

The event that we have come to know and love as Mahogany & Merlot was born when Mitch and Mark Evans, invited Ron Jones Jr., to bring his U-102 Coors Dry turbine hydro to Chelan in late October 1992. Mitch had driven the boat at its debut race in Seattle earlier that summer and the next month, a rookie driver named Dave Villwock drove the Coors Dry to victory in his first race in San Diego. Following that race, the boat was shipped to Hawaii for the Outrigger Hydrofest. After two back to back saltwater races and a few weeks on board a steamship, Ron Jr. was concerned that leftover salt water in the hull could cause damage, so the decision was made to run the boat on the clear fresh water of Lake Chelan. It was a relaxed, casual test session with the boat making several runs. The highlight of the weekend was when Mitch Evans took 83 year old Ted Jones, the “father” of the modern three point prop-riders, out for his first(and only) ride in a turbine unlimited. A few

The friendly low-key nature of the event appealed to us and when Mitch invited the Museum to bring over a few of our boats in 1993 to help out with the expenses, we jumped at the chance. That first year, we brought over the Hawaii Kai replica, the Slo-mo-shun V and the 1959 Miss Thriftway. We pitted from the parking lot of Chelan Airways

and crane sound effects that were used in the final version of the film.

Eventually the Courtrights moved on to other projects but M&M now had momentum. It took on a life of its own and continued to grow through the last half of the decade. In 2018 we had so many vintage unlimiteds that we couldn’t fit them in the Campbell’s / Don Morse Park pits, so we took on a second crane pit back on the South Side of the Lake in the Three Fingers Area. Covid kept us off the Lake for 2020 and 2021 but we are coming back bigger and better in 2022 with three days of excitement on the Lake featuring 10 unlimiteds and more than 20 limiteds.

which was very close to the original 1957 Apple Cup Pits. All three of the boats that we brought had participated in one or more of the original Apple Cups (although not necessarily under the names they were wearing in 1993). We used the event as a crew day, rewarding hard working volunteers with a chance to go for a ride in a real unlimited. The emotional highpoint of the weekend came when long time museum board member and restoration master Roger Newton got a chance to run a lap in the Slo-mo-shun V.

For the next several years the event was put together in Chelan by the Evans Brothers, along with John Walker, owner of the Caravel Resort. We maintained the low key, casual style of the event, trading rides with the fire department for an ambulance and EMTs and taking the crane operator’s adult son out in a boat instead of paying cash for the crane. Turbine boats still showed up from time to time; Mitch brought out the Appian Jeronimo one year, another time Ken Muscatel came by with his U-25. The event didn’t happen every year; we skipped it in 2000 when the museum was knee deep in filming the Madison Movie but came back in 2001 with the audio team from the production company to record a lot of the boat

Eventually we outgrew the parking lot at Chelan Airways, and moved across the lake to straddle the line between Campbell’s Resort and Don Morse Park. Campbell’s has been a great partner and a huge part of the event ever since. About the same time we crossed the lake, we realized that we needed to step up and become a fully sanctioned (and insured) APBA event. With an APBA sanction came officials, rescue divers, security and a lot more expenses. Luckily for the Museum, Jon Courtright (who had been a friend of mine since we had worked together on Bill Wurster’s Oh Boy Oberto back in 1980) was serving on our Board of Directors. Jon and his talented wife Chris had spent ten years developing a very successful event on Lake Sammamish called Tastin’ n Racin’ that included car shows, food booths and all sorts of great activities. Jon and Chris and I talked, they explained some of their ideas, I told them about a few of our own. The Courtrights were moving to Chelan, and agreed to take over the event for us and start generating some revenue.TheCourtrights had an amazing impact on the event and it skyrocketed to a whole new level. We now had a name. We called ourselves Mahogany and Merlot. We had a beer garden, live music, limited hydros and an in the water boat show from the Antique and Classic Boat Society. We added a car show, craft fair and an awards banquet. John Walker continued to stay heavily involved working side by side with the Courtrights lining up much of the local logistical support. Ness Crane and Tyler Ulsh worked to get us free cranes while Region 10 Rescue continued to provide us with the best rescue personal around.

The second Apple Cup was held May 11, 1958. Home-town boy Norm Evans was in the seat of Miss Bardahl, which had been christened just one week prior to the race. Also engaging in their first competition were Miss Thriftway, (a replacement for the boat that disintegrated at the Madison Regatta in 1957), Miss Spokane, and Miss Pay ‘n Save. The field of qualifiers was rounded out by William Waggoner’s defending champion Maverick; cab-over Thriftway Too; Coral Reef, the

Of the ten qualifiers, only one dropped out for mechanical reasons during the qualifying heats. Machinery was functioning perfectly and each section of each heat was a real contest. There is a reasonable explanation for this. The revised 1958 racing rules, calling for preliminary heats shortened from the former 30 miles to 15 miles, shifted the emphasis from endurance to speed.

Meanwhile, Maverick was leading Miss Wahoo around the course. Schleeh waved his teammate on when Stead spotted Schleeh in the water in the west turn. Maverick slowed, then continued her charge to the checkered flag. Miss Wahoo tried to catch the flying Maverick, but could not do so. Miss Wahoo, one lap behind Because of that illegal start, had to be content with second place.

The Chelan Apple Cup races were a natural extension of “hydromania” which swept the Pacific Northwest in the 1950s. With a 1957 population of 250, and almost 40 miles from a city of any size, Chelan decided to go “big-league”.

The new rules provided that the contest be decided on points scored in the final 30-mile heat only, and that Final heat turned into a heartbreaker for the Thriftways, each of which had led the pack in the preliminary heats. Thriftway Too, in the early stages of the finale, suffered a hole in her bottom and fell out in the third lap. Miss Thriftway, looking as though she were going to make it three firsts in a row, developed engine trouble and dropped out during the eighth circuit.

Norm Evans, driving the Ted Jones-designed, Ron Jones-built Miss Bardahl, had a great duel with Fred Alter aboard George Simon’s Miss U.S. I in the Final heat. With no intention of losing the $1,500 purse, Evans stuck his foot in the carburetor and roared over the finish line to get the first checkered flag in his unlimited racing career. As the boats neared the west turn, Hawaii Kai III held the lead over Shanty I, and it looked like a ding-dong 10-lap heat, but a wind had come up and was dusting the surface of the previously calm lake with pretty fair waves. The Kai, which had been repowered with a new motor between heats by the Slo-mo-shun crew, slammed into a wave, tearing the cowling off and conking her out for good. Heat was theoretically a lulu, with Hawaii Kai III, Shanty I, Miss Wahoo, and Maverick pitted against each other. Miss Wahoo, apparently stuck in the pits with Slovak unable to get the engine going until almost the one-minute gun finally dashed down the course, made an illegal start, turning on the wrong side of a buoy, but crossing the starting line first. This maneuver cost an extra lap, so Miss Wahoo was actually one lap behind from the start.

The brisk chop was soon replaced by rollers, and these conditions didn’t allow any challenging.

The Final heat was a repeat field of heat 2, with the exception of Wahoo, which had pushed a rod through the side of the engine. Miss Thriftway had no trouble getting out in front. Muncey held the lead, took the checkered flag, and captured the cup. Nitrogen was doing a good job of cornering but just didn’t have it in the straightaways. Miss Burien was right behind Nitrogen and finished third. Miss Bardahl, working hard to make up for a poor start, came in fourth, and Miss Everett limped in fifth. After four years of Unlimited hydroplane racing, the Chelan races were cancelled, amid a combination of increased expenses and problems.

Nitrogen, the only eastern contender, with Norm Evans driving.

Newspaper accounts of the final Apple Cup, held on May 8, 1960, headlined the “tiff” between Mira Slovak and Bill Muncey. Slovak appeared to be the culprit as the two drivers aimed roostertails at each other during two match-ups. Slovak and Wahoo only scored 400 points for the day, finishing fifth over-all. Muncey and Miss Thriftway earned 1025 points and gained first place honors.

the race declared a contest. With two heat victories and 800 points, Chuck Hickling and Miss Pay ‘n Save took home the cup.

season testing. Sam DuPont’s new Nitrogen from Wilmington, Delaware was the biggest unknown quantity.DonWilson, aboard Miss U.S. I, broke the course qualifying mark at 116.+ mph, only to watch the new Maverick take the Harry Wolfe Trophy for the fastest qualifier at 114.648 mph. The race was shaping up as potentially the best ever, with but one small cloud of uncertainty - the wind. On Friday and Saturday, the winds gusted to 30 mph, and the course closed early both days. The starting time for the first heat was advanced two hours. Television people whined, but so did the wind.

Miss Spokane and Hawaii Kai were out for the day, so the field was shortened to seven boats and a singlesection Heat 2 was scheduled. The highlight of this heat was a rematch of the first heat “duel” between Miss Thriftway and Wahoo. Slovak took a two boat-length lead as Wahoo took the buoys close. Muncey took the Thriftway wide and would dive in on the exit buoy. On the third turn of the third lap, this cost Muncey another bath. He got going again quickly, and by this time Wahoo began to show signs of heating up. As Wahoo went dead in the water, Thriftway took first place. Steady-driving Norm Evans in Nitrogen was second, followed by Miss Burien, Miss Bardahl, and Miss Everett.
