LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK

From the shores of Lake Chelan to the hillsides that surround it, beautiful homes grace the area. Many houses stand out as a delight to the eyes and nourishing fodder for the imagination. What more could one ask for than the chance to get a peek inside to see not only the exterior architecture and landscaping, but also the creativity and care that have been put into the interior design? That chance awaits Sept. 21 with the 17th Annual Lake Chelan Hospital Guild B Home Tour. The tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $25 per person. As part of this fundraiser for Lake Chelan Community Hospital there is also a sale of local art at Larc Hill Vineyard Ranch next door to Tsillan Cellars. The featured artists donate 25% of the proceeds from the sale to the hospital fundraiser. This year’s Home Tour and Art Show proceeds will be used along with last year’s proceeds to construct a post-partum family room at the new hospital. This will allow parents and newborns the chance to spend the first few days after birth together as a family unit. This year’s home tour includes “Meraki Lodge” at 223 Meraki Lane in Manson, “Traditional with a French Flair” at 241 Crystal Drive in Chelan, “On a Whim” at 350 Porcupine Lane in Chelan and “Italian Villa” at 106 Crystal Drive in Chelan. “Meraki Lodge” features a sweeping view of the Chelan Valley and the lake below. In keeping with the lodge style, there is a stone

fireplace at the entrance that reaches up to the high, vaulted ceiling. Interior doors and millwork are made with knotty alder. A pool area forms the centerpiece of the back yard. “Traditional with a French Flair” is a fivebedroom home that takes advantage of the beautiful views of its lakeside setting. Special features include African mahogany ceiling beams in the office and a fold-away glass NanaWall giving unhindered views of the lake from the living room. “On a Whim” has the look of a traditional farmhouse, but with plenty of cutting-edge technology. This includes a NanaWall which folds back for access to a deck with views of the lake and surrounding mountains. A downstairs bedroom features built-in bunks for four. “Italian Villa” was built by the owners and they went all out with extras like walls of Venetian plaster applied by a European artist, a Craftsman-style chandelier, knotty alder doors, a two-sided fireplace, brown rainforest granite counters and mirrored wall niches. The exterior is made of massive stonework and the home is set in a terraced rock garden. As with all the homes, gorgeous views of the lake and surroundings are taken to their best advantage. Tickets for the Home Tour are available at lakechelancommunityhospital.com/aboutus/home-tour.

Celebrating

25

years

Chances Are… by Richard Russo One beautiful September day, three sixty-six-year old men convene on Martha’s Vineyard, friends ever since meeting in college in the sixties. They couldn’t have been more different then, or even today - Lincoln’s a commercial real estate broker, Teddy a tiny-press publisher, and Mickey a musician beyond his rockin’ age. But each man holds his own secrets, in addition to the monumental mystery that none of them has ever stopped puzzling over since a Memorial Day weekend right here on the Vineyard in 1971. Now, forty-four years later, as this new weekend unfolds, three lives and that of a significant other are displayed in their entirety while the distant past confounds the present like a relentless squall of surprise and discovery.

When Nolan Grey receives news that his father, a once-prominent biologist, has drowned off Leap’s Island, he calls on Elsa, his estranged, older half-sister, to help pick up the pieces. This, despite the fact that it was he and Elsa who broke the family in the first place. Here, their father’s fatalistic colleagues, the Reversalists, obsessively study the undowny bufflehead, a rare sea duck whose loss of waterproof feathers proves, they say, that evolution is running in reverse and humanity’s best days are behind us. Stuck together in the close quarters of their island stilt-house, and provoked by the absurd antics of the remaining Reversalists, years of family secrecy and blame between Elsa and Nolan threaten to ruin them all over again. As the Greys urgently trek the island to find the so-called Paradise Duck, their father’s final obsession, they begin to fear that they were their father’s first evidence that the future held no hope.

Behind Joe’s Log Cabin

In this game, even winning can be deadly... Amy Whey is proud of her ordinary life and the simple pleasures that come with it—teaching diving lessons, baking cookies for new neighbors, helping her best friend, Charlotte, run their local book club. But Amy’s sweet, uncomplicated life begins to unravel when the mysterious and alluring Angelica Roux arrives on her doorstep one book club night. Sultry and magnetic, Roux beguiles the group and lures them into a game of spilling secrets. Everyone thinks it’s naughty, harmless fun. Only Amy knows better. Something wicked has come her way—a she-devil in a pricey red sports car who seems to know the terrible truth about who she is and what she once did.

The Escape Room by Megan Goldin ‘Welcome to the escape room. Your goal is simple. Get out alive.’ In the lucrative world of Wall Street finance, Vincent, Jules, Sylvie and Sam are ruthlessly ambitious, they make billion-dollar deals and live lives of outrageous luxury. Getting rich is all that matters, and they’ll do anything to get ahead. When the four of them become trapped in an elevator escape room, things start to go horribly wrong. They have to put aside their fierce office rivalries and work together to solve the clues that will release them. But in the confines of the elevator the dark secrets of their team are laid bare. They are made to answer for profiting from a workplace where deception, intimidation and sexual harassment thrive. Tempers fray and the escape room’s clues turn more and more ominous, leaving the four of them dangling on the precipice of disaster. If they want to survive, they’ll have to solve one final puzzle: which one of them is a killer?

LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK

Tsillan Cellars will be finishing up its second year of wine classes from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.on Sept. 21. The classes began in April with bud break. There was a flowering class in June and a veraison class in August. The September class will focus on harvest. This is probably the most exciting class as it provides the chance to watch the vineyard crews bringing in the fruits of the long summer labor. The crews will be picking grapes by hand and loading them into bins to be moved to the production facility. Class members will see how the grapes are pressed and prepared for winemaking. As with the other three classes, the harvest class will culminate with the chance to taste two of Tsillan Cellars estate wines paired with

small bites provided by Sorrento’s Ristorante. According to Tsillan Cellars marketing director Jamie Dowell the classes have been well-attended and have attracted a range of people from those just learning about winemaking to those who are currently growing their own grapes and making their own wine. Participants can sign up for the classes through Sept. 20 by calling (509)682-9463 or by e-mailing cassy@tsillancellars.com. The cost of the classes is $50 for wine club members and $65 for the general public. Dowell said that Tsillan Cellars is planning to hold the classes again next season, so look out for the first class toward the end of April.
