LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK

The sixth annual Manson Hydrofest, hosted by the Manson and Lake Chelan Chambers of Commerce and the Seattle Inboard Racing Association is to be held Sept. 27 through 29 in Manson Bay. The kickoff for the event will start at 5 p.m. at WineGirl Wines and will include live music, beer, wine and more. Hydroplanes will be displayed on the streets of downtown Manson, so those who love looking at boats up close won’t want to miss this. Races will be held all day Sept. 27 and Sept. 28. Manson Hydrofest is the last race of the year in Region 10 and the last opportunity for crews to gain points toward a National High Point Championship. Spectators will get to see the crews putting in all they’ve got toward the last points of the season. The races attract large numbers of teams from all over the country. Manson Chamber of Commerce president Jeff Conwell said that team members have told him that Manson Hydrofest is the first race they sign up for each year. They love the hospitality of the local community. Boats in a large variety of classifications will be at the event. These include limited hydroplanes, flat bottom hydroplanes and mini-hydroplanes. The races also attract a large number of visitors, which is great for businesses as the summer tourist season winds down. “It’s a big boost,” Conwell said. The best places to watch the races are from Manson Bay Park, from the lake or from Wapato Point Resort. Boats will need to stay back a defined distance from the races. Wapato Point Resort is open to guests only. Pit passes will be available for $10 and are good for Sept. 27 and 28. Meanwhile the Manson Fire Department will be holding a barbeque at the fire station across the street from Manson Bay Park, so there will be plenty of good food available.

LABYRINTH OF THE SPIRITS CARLOS RUIZ ZAFON

A SPARK OF LIGHT JODI PICOULT

The warm fall day starts like any other at the Center-a women’s reproductive health services clinic--its staff offering care to anyone who passes through its doors. Then, in late morning, a desperate and distraught gunman bursts in and opens fire, taking all inside hostage. After rushing to the scene, Hugh McElroy, a police hostage negotiator, sets up a perimeter and begins making a plan to communicate with the gunman. As his phone vibrates with incoming text messages he glances at it and, to his horror, finds out that his fifteen-year-old daughter, Wren, is inside the clinic. One of the most fearless writers of our time, Jodi Picoult tackles a complicated issue in this gripping and nuanced novel. How do we balance the rights of pregnant women with the rights of the unborn they carry? What does it mean to be a good parent? A Spark of Light will inspire debate, conversation . . . and, hopefully, understanding.

The internationally acclaimed, New York Times bestselling author returns to the magnificent universe he constructed in his bestselling novels The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel’s Game, and The Prisoner of Heaven in this riveting series finale--a heart-pounding thriller and nail-biting work of suspense which introduces a sexy, seductive new heroine whose investigation shines a light on the dark history of Franco’s Spain. In this unforgettable final volume of Ruiz Zafón’s cycle of novels set in the universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, beautiful and enigmatic Alicia Gris, with the help of the Sempere family, uncovers one of the most shocking conspiracies in all Spanish history.

THE REAL LOLITA SARAH WEINMAN Weaving together suspenseful crime narrative, cultural and social history, and literary investigation, The Real Lolita tells Sally Horner’s full story for the very first time. Drawing upon extensive investigations, legal documents, public records, and interviews with remaining relatives, Sally Horner’s story echoes the stories of countless girls and women who never had the chance to speak for themselves. By diving deeper in the publication history of Lolita and restoring Sally to her rightful place in the lore of the novel’s creation, The Real Lolita casts a new light on the dark inspiration for a modern classic.

Mitch Evans' vintage Unlimited Hydro the "Breathless II" takes off on Lake Chelan.

Mitch and Mark Evans.

rom a young age, racing got into the blood of Mark and Mitch Evans. Their father, Norm Evans, competed in hydroplane racing on the national level. He also organized unlimited hydroplane races on Lake Chelan from 1957-1961. For four years Chelan held races at the top level of international competition, and according to Mark Evans those races were what first put the town on the map. Chelan was flooded with people from all over the country, including some famous people. People suddenly knew about this small town. However, the town couldn’t absorb the number of people that attended events at this level and the races were discontinued after four years. In the meantime, the Evans brothers were growing up at their dad’s Lake Chelan marina business. They were helping to drive and fix boats and to sell convenience items at the marina store. They were also spending their spare time doing skateboarding and bicycling tricks and learning to laugh at the physics laws that keep most people’s feet on the ground. When Norm Evans went out on the racing circuit he brought the boys with him. As they got older he got them started with snowmobile racing and then with racing the smaller hydroplanes. They took after their father and loved all kinds of racing sports from the beginning. They began racing around the country and then brought hydroplane racing back to Lake Chelan. They started with Mahogany and Merlot, an event that gives the public the chance to get up close to the hydroplanes and to have the experience of riding in them. Then they added the Manson Hydrofest races in 2014 and the Lake Chelan Apple Cup Regatta

in 2017. These are both limited hydroplane races, which is a more realistic fit for Chelan’s size. They also hold the Norm Evans Memorial Race for radio-controlled unlimiteds the third weekend in September. Their friend and team manager John Walcker plays a key role in all their organizing efforts. Recently the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce has also gotten involved in helping to promote the races as a great weekend of family fun. For the Evans Brothers, organizing races on Lake Chelan is a way to give back to the community and to the sport of hydroplane racing. It is also a way to continue their father’s tradition. Nowadays they often get to see their friends’ grandchildren taking the helm, and that is very rewarding. “It’s really nice to see it evolve and continue on,” Mark Evans said. Evans Brothers Racing doesn’t have a boat in the race for the present. In recent years they have focused more on showing their vintage boats and on helping to organize the Chelan hydroplane events. They are also working on building a boat using the former Ellstrom Unlimitied hull and fitting it with a v-8 engine. Needless to say this is a project that requires quite a few funds, and they are in the process of developing sponsors for this new boat. It has been a colorful life in racing, and the material from that life provided the content for Mark Evans’ autobiography “Dancing with Disaster”. He is currently in the process of writing a second book. Mitch Evans ran Evans Marine for about 20 years before selling it to his daughter, Erin Mudd and her husband Ron. They now run it as RJ’s Marine. Mitch continues to manage Evans Storage and loves snowmobile racing.
