This year’s response nearly blew us away W
elcome to the 2012 edition of “30 Under 35,” a recognition of the best and brightest young people of our region. Begun last year by Wenatchee Valley Business World, this section is designed to bring forward many of the young minds at work making our communities better places for now and for the future. Last year, we were impressed with the large number of nominations we received for this honor. This year, we were somewhat blown away. By the deadline, more than 100 nomination forms had been submitted, with some of those representing duplicate nominations for a candidate. It made for some very tough decisions, narrowing that field down to 30 honorees. It also was reassuring to see the names of so many talented, hard-working, community-minded people. Once again, the 30 come from diverse backgrounds. Some represent the latest generation of a family business; some are entrepreneurs; and others are highly educated professionals now
working for some of the most prestigious firms in the region. For the second year, we have a recent high school graduate who already has shown the drive and determination to succeed at whatever she sets out to do. In the weeks and months ahead, we plan to enlist this year’s winners in a dialogue on the issues we face as a community. We expect their fresh perspectives to raise these discussions to a higher, more positive and productive level. Congratulations to all 30. Your skills, potential and ambition assure us our area is in good hands for many years to come.
Brandon Wright, 25 Tina Duffey, 27 Manager, Stan’s Merry Mart Working for this landmark Wenatchee store, Brandon has been tirelessly dedicated to taking what his family has established and building toward an even more successful future. Brandon began working at the store at a young age, doing odd jobs for the late Bob Stanley. He began working on a more regular basis at about age 14. He attended Wenatchee Valley College, then Gonzaga University, where he earned a B.A. in business administration, all the while continuing work at Stan’s in some capacity. As manager, he is involved in just about every aspect of the business and is always willing to listen to employees who have ideas for trying new products and ideas. “Brandon has the drive and determination to do anything he wants and he chooses to help run his family’s business,” his nominating letter stated. He also has coached Eastmont High School’s varsity boys basketball spring league the past two years.
Stewardship and trails assistant, Chelan-Douglas Land Trust What started in September 2010 as an AmeriCorps internship with the Land Trust grew into a permanent job in July 2011 as Tina quickly showed her talents, ambition and commitment to the Land Trust’s mission. In her time on the job she has rapidly expanded the depth and breadth of the Land Trust’s Stewardship and Trails Program. She graduated from Western Washington University with a B.S. in biology. “She has done a wonderful job of engaging our community in a way that makes volunteering fun and rewarding,” her nominating letter stated. Outside work, Tina is an engaged leader in Wenatchee’s Young Life Program, and has been a dedicated mentor through that program since high school.
Congratulations to all the 30 Under 35 Winners. We applaud your accomplishments and commitment to our communities. Wenatchee Rotaract

CO NG RAT ULAT I O NS! Travis Susan Kane, Ph.D.
Susan Kane, 30
Richardson, 29 Owner/Irrigation specialist, Allthrive Landscape & Irrigation
Dr. Susan Kane joined the adjunct science faculty at Wenatchee Valley College in August 2011. She moved to the Wenatchee Valley after completing a doctorate in biological sciences with an emphasis in immunology and infectious diseases from South Dakota State University.
Seven years ago, Travis had a dream of owning his own successful business. He started by blowing out clients’ irrigation lines in the fall. He balanced working 40 hours per week in construction and having his business on the side. He started with about 50 clients and by the next fall his customer base had grown to 200. Three years into it, Travis decided to start installing sprinkler systems, repairing systems and maintaining yards, as well. He was soon able to devote his full time to his business. Travis now has a customer base of about 1,000 clients and it keeps growing. “Travis is a go-getter who has built a thriving service business single-handedly. His enthusiasm, expertise, and professionalism are amazing — especially in one so young,” his nomination letter stated. He has added water features to his offerings and recently expanded to include snow removal.
Dr. Kane is a member of the American Society of Virology and the American Association of Veterinary Immunologists. She volunteers in the community through the Junior Service League of Wenatchee. Her students appreciate her attention to detail, assistance in the lab and most of all, her great sense of humor.
Wenatchee Valley College teacher An adjunct biology teacher at WVC, Sue graduated from the University of Colorado in 2003 and then attended and taught at South Dakota State University. This spring she received her doctoral degree in biological sciences from South Dakota State University. She has presented her research at the Infectious Disease Conference in San Diego and will present again to the American Society of Virology in Madison, Wis., later this month. “It’s quite impressive when anyone goes through all the trials of getting their doctoral degree. But going through this process while surviving not one, but two bouts of breast cancer and treatments is mind boggling!” her nomination letter stated. She is active in several projects in Wenatchee’s Junior Service League and supports breast cancer research through a collaborative project with Sanford Research in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Heather Hill, 30
Marshall Talbot, 32
Washington/Oregon state director, Addus HealthCare
Orchardist, Jim Talbot Orchards
Heather was recently promoted to Washington and Oregon state director for Addus HealthCare after only a year and a half of employment. Previously as an agency director, she fostered growth and built her branch in rural Central Washington (Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, Lincoln, and Adams counties) despite state budgetary challenges. “Despite her increasing responsibilities, she never fails to remember the core of her business: enabling seniors to remain independent in their homes,” her nomination letter stated. Heather is a Wenatchee native who returned home in 2010 after spending 10 years as the wife of an Army soldier. During those 10 years she moved from duty station to duty station and experienced multiple deployments of her husband, all while completing her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. When Heather is not traveling for work, you can catch her on the softball field playing with Eastmont Baptist Church’s Betel softball team which promotes ministry and a sense of community through athletics.
Marshall grew up on the family apple and cherry orchard in Quincy. He had little interest in farming after high school and earned a business degree from Pacific Lutheran University. He worked for various companies before returning to help with the family orchard. He had a great opportunity to work with one of the larger orchards in the Wentachee Valley. Then when his dad decided he was going to get out of farming and sell the farm, Marshall decided it was time to return home once again. So, five years ago, he went to work for his dad, Jim, and helped implement a number of changes. He initiated organic certification, and they are now an organic apple orchard. He’s received grants to make and install hawk boxes. They are planting rosebushes, cover crops, and other flowers around and in the orchard to create habitats for beneficial insects. Marshall and Jim hired a worker part-time to grow a vegetable garden on some bare ground, and on a weekly basis during the harvest, each agricultural worker receives a bag of fresh vegetables. Marshall has been working as assistant manager in the orchard. Last year Jim decided he wanted to retire and Marshall is preparing to move onto the farm, taking over orchard operations. Marshall is a leader, trying to be a proper steward of the land while supporting his workers.
Congratulations Heather Hill!

Blaine Davidson, 34 Anna Miller, 28 Director and founder at BeVictorious Ministries/ performance enhancement coach at The Inner Circle Gym
Associate executive director, Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra/Former managing director, Icicle Arts
Blaine is a catalyst for positive transformation and growth in the lives of others as both the director of BeVictorious.org — a nonproďŹ t ministry to men — and as a performance enhancement coach at The Inner Circle Gym. Since graduating from the University of Washington in 2000 with a B.A. in English teaching, Blaine has worked with thousands of men and women in the performance enhancement, coaching and mentoring realms. “BeVictorious’ purpose is to share the scandalously good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ by inviting all of God’s children to claim the truth of their supernatural identity,â€? he said. His vocational experience includes corporate management and consulting, and small business ownership with his wife Erin. “Through his work, people are being transformed — physically, mentally and spiritually — and being empowered to live victorious lives rooted in their authentic identity and calling, and encouraged to share their unique glory with those in their inuence,â€? his nomination letter stated.
Anna recently started her new job as associate executive director with Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, leaving her position of over three years with Icicle Arts. She will, however, continue to live in Wenatchee and commute to Seattle. Anna joined Icicle Arts as managing director in 2009 and launched the organization into several new areas by building programs and developing partnerships to bring art and arts education to all ages in North Central Washington. That included creating an art gallery at Barn Beach Reserve with rotating exhibits throughout the year, free and reduced tuition-based art education programs, both in-school and after-school in Leavenworth and Cashmere and the annual Icicle Arts festival, a multidisciplinary festival that brings together artists from four counties of NCW with juried exhibits. “Under Anna’s leadership, Icicle Arts has grown into a organization that positively impacts our community, her nominating letter stated. Anna also teaches dance in Wenatchee at the Academy of Dance and Performing Arts and is a former professional dancer.
