itchens are definitely not “one size fits all.” The feel we desire often comes from childhood memories of the kitchen where we once fed our souls as well as our stomachs. The kitchen more than any other room in the house says, “Nourish, family, create, provide, love.” We want it to function well and we want it to feel right. Hence, the huge trend toward renovating this space. It’s usually not hard to make the argument to remodel – obsolete Special to The Wenatchee World appliances, tired cabinetry, outdated hardware. Often, the existing space doesn’t suit our preferences because it’s closed off from other rooms.

But what to do when funds are limited? The good news is that we can do many simple things ourselves that will go a long way toward making a kitchen feel fresh and right.

Refresh Clean, scrub, disinfect, polish and paint. A thorough cleaning is always a good idea for starters. Remove anything that is beyond repair that can be a breeding place for germs or mold. Remove grimy cabinet doors or entire upper cabinets and replace them with open shelves. Freshen up with low or no-VOC paint. If you’re concerned about old paint containing lead, contact the state Department of Ecology, 360-407-7398, hdav461@ecy.wa.gov.

A project can be halted for lack of permits, costing you time and money.

How To Choose

t

A Contractor

Look for signs of scams:

by Christine Pratt World staff writer

he expertise and security of an experienced, licensed and bonded professional contractor can produce an outstanding result and peace of mind. Just do your homework first. The state Department of Labor & Industries offers the following advice: - Verify contractor registration - Get three separate bids - Don’t pay in full until the job is done. Here are a few additional tips:

Plan your project: If you can clearly explain what you want, you’ll be less susceptible to cost overruns.

Make a list of potential contractors Check advertisements, consult with friends and acquaintances, ask at building supply

5

centers. Posting a general inquiry on your social networking sites, like Facebook, may also turn up some leads, but check them out.

Check credentials To best protect yourself from fraud and shoddy craftsmanship, only consider contractors who are bonded and registered with Labor & Industries. You can check that here: https://secure.lni.wa.gov/verify/

them, preferably visit a job in progress and chat with the homeowner.

Narrow the list to at least three, interview each contractor to learn about specialties, time frames and warranties. Ask for clarification, if necessary. A good contractor will take the time to explain in terms you understand. Ask each for a bid in writing and review each carefully. The cheapest isn’t always the best.

- State Attorney Generel’s Office consumer hotline: 1-800-551-4635, www.atg.wa.gov/SafeguardingConsumers/

Get and check references

State agencies can also help with reference checks, but it may be challenging to get an agency official on the phone.

- Better Business Bureau 509-455-4200 (Eastern Washington)

Learn about permits

Ask each for a list of references and check

Check with your county and city about needed building permits. Do this first.

- References that can’t be verified - High-pressure sales techniques - Special price if you sign today - Lack of written contract or complete bid - Asks you to get the permits (in most cases, the contractor should do this.) - Makes you an offer that sounds too good to be true. Report suspected fraud to 1-888-811-5974 www.Fraud.Lni.wa.gov The state Department of Labor & Industries website is filled with addition tips to keep tabs on the project from start to finish. The Internet is also a great resource for product specifications and information; however, beware of websites claiming to be experts. And, remember, just because it’s on the Internet doesn’t mean it applies to your project or is the truth.

5 STEPS to Save

Five steps that will save you time, money on a remodeling project

m

Establish a budget Without a budget, homeowners can easily get off track. The plethora of choices available in materials alone can be overwhelming.

ost homeowners dive into a remodeling project full of excitement. They are up for the challenge and eager to get started. But that excitement can quickly vanish amid confusing construction schedules and escalating costs. Here are five must-do Dan Dean steps that not only will Special to The Wenatchee World help guide you through a home remodel project but also save time and cut costs along the way.

Create a scrapbook of ideas Today, there are many online resources, including Houzz.com and Pintrest.com, to help homeowners get started envisioning what their projects can look like when finished. These websites allow people to create an account, save and comment on pictures, and collect ideas to share with a designer or contractor. They are easy tools to use to get the creative juices flowing.

When putting a budget together, ask yourself what the project’s goal is. If you are remodeling a kitchen, how will your family be using the space? Where are the problem areas now? What are your must-haves? If you are unsure what to expect during a remodeling project, hire a professional – an architect, interior designer or a design build firm – to help you develop a budget. If a general contractor will be completing your remodeling project, have him involved in the design process.

Just be sure the final design is realistic. Without clear communication, a professional may over-design for the home or overspend the budget.

Develop a detailed scope of work Describe all phases of your remodeling project in as much detail as possible. This is a step that is often overlooked or ignored. When that happens, your project and its costs may spiral out of control. Your written work plan should include such details as selecting and ordering materials. Make sure everything is ordered prior to starting any demolition work. Materials that must be backordered can delay your project. If working with a contractor, the plan should also contain a clear schedule, so you know when to expect someone working in your home.

Decide what work you can do yourself Your detailed scope of work, already completed, should help determine what part of the project you’re able to complete. Be – Continued on Next Page –

honest with yourself here. Focus on what you can realistically do based on your skills and time and leave the rest to professionals. Mistakes or delays on your own part of the project could hold up the contractor and end up costing you money.

By creating a design, budget and scope of work that’s clear to all involved up front, the homeowner will keep the project on schedule and budget. And that translates to money saved!

A professional, working eight hours a day, five days a week, can need anywhere from two-to-four weeks to complete a bathroom or kitchen remodel. Working on your own, it will take longer. Keep that in mind.

Dan Dean, owner of Overall Kitchen & Bath Design Center in Cashmere, has more than 30 years of experience building and remodeling homes in the Wenatchee Valley. He can be reached at 663-5081 or dandean@overall-cs.com. Visit Overall at www.overallkandb.com.

Choose the right professionals Always get detailed bids in writing to ensure you’re getting what you expect. Later, make sure you record all changes that deviate from the plan and put these in writing, with a copy going to everyone involved.

If you’re planning to get multiple bids, plan a project review for all involved to ensure all parties are estimating the same thing and to resolve any issues on the spot. Consider hiring a design consultant to help you with these meetings. The consultant will be available when you may not be, saving you money by keeping the job on schedule.

Spring Home & Garden Repurpose with Purpose Contest

c

ongratulations to Tara Tupling of Waterville and Carrie McFann of East Wenatchee! They’ve each won $50 for their submissions to The World’s “Repurpose with Purpose” Facebook contest held March 12 to 20.

All submissions are made of old objects that their creators repurposed into fun, useful items for the home and garden. Thanks very much to all participants! Here’s a look at all our favorites.

r

e nn i W

Old Fence Coat Rack Tara Tupling, Waterville “This was once part of a white picket fence around my father-in-law’s country home. I love the rustic look it adds to my mud room! With antique coat hooks added, it’s the perfect place to toss your coat and scarf.”

Winner, Garden Category Tara Tupling, Waterville “This project began as a junk pile find. The old stovepipe caught my eye… With a little paint, some handy zip ties and an old fish bowl, this cute caterpillar was created and fits perfectly in my flowerbeds. I love to dive into junk piles and make beautiful creations out of what most people call junk!”

Blue Jeans Quilt Jeanette Cavadini, Mansfield “I took all of the family’s ragged jeans and made a ‘rag denim quilt’ for a graduation gift for a granddaughter. I also made ‘memory quilts’ for the grandchildren by repurposing their sport T-shirts.”

Winner, Home Category Carrie McFann, East Wenatchee “I created this patio furniture set using seven pallets. I painted them, used two twin-size foam pieces that I covered with waterproof fabric and decorated with pillows. I have a large patio and always lacked seating. This is perfect for gatherings and lying under the stars.”

Pallet Planter Carrie McFann, East Wenatchee “I stained this pallet and attached the pots using wire. I thought it was an adorable way to show off my flowers.”

Wedge-Shaped Table Bob Skell, East Wenatchee

From Wheelbarrow to Rock Mover Ken Hunziker, Rock Island “When my wife and I moved to the region and built a new home, we were introduced for the first time to the boulder-laden soils so commonly found in building sites here… So, entered the need for what we call our $10 “rock mover.” We found an old wooden-handled wheelbarrow at a second-hand store. After removing the metal tub, I welded up and added a “cow-catcher” extension ahead of the wheel. Thus equipped, it has become a handy and effective boulder transporter.”

“I needed a wedge-shaped table… to hold all my remote controls, coffee and miscellaneous. While searching through my accumulations of stuff I spotted three wedge-shaped pieces of oak that were perfect for the shelves. I went in search of something to use as legs and found four oak legs with claw feet and glass balls from an end table from the Bruce Hotel. Now come the laughs — about 20 years ago I bought at a yard sale what were the oak steps at Abby’s Pizza in East Wenatchee. Those steps are the shelves in my table!”

GO VERTICAL

The Wenatchee World

for space-saving gardening of flowers, herbs, berries

i

Cheri Garrett Master Gardner

Spring Home & Garden

f you’re handy with tools but short on garden space try this nifty tower method for growing just about any annual plant with shallow roots, including strawberries, herbs and flowering

annuals. Try growing herbs and lettuce together for a wonderful, fragrant salad garden! Make your tower from wood or pipe. Many ideas are available on the Internet. Use the search words “strawberry towers.” Stackable buckets especially designed for vertical gardening are also available in stores — a good option if you’d rather not build your own. Master Gardner Craig Robertson recently had one built that is 4- to 5-feet tall for strawberries. Place the tower on the ground

or on a big pot and fill it with soil, firmly but not too densely packed. The tower can be fitted with a drip irrigation system from the top down to make watering a snap. Then, just fill in the gaps with plants and mulch for weed control. Be sure to fill the tower with plants that have similar watering needs. Vertical gardening is exciting, innovative and fun. It tends to discourage weed and bug infestations for healthier, more care-free plants and fruit. And it’s easier on the back and knees when harvest time comes! I have a raised bed for my strawberries at home. Each plant takes up about one square foot of space. I sit on the edge of the bed to weed, debug and pick the wonderful fruit, but afterward, my back and knees ache even at that height. As with anything wonderful, there are a few disadvantages, too.

Moving and Storage We will pack, pickup, and store your household items. We can handle your moving needs across town, state, country or worldwide.

Debbie Gurnard

Produced by the Advertising Department of The Wenatchee World

Towers often need to be replanted year after year, because perennial plants tend not to do as well in them the following year. Windstorms can topple the towers, although you can fix this by staking or tying. If you build your own, a wider base will make the tower more stable. Also, the tower can be labor-intensive to build, especially if you’re not the handiest with tools. Craig got his plans on the Washington State University website, http://tinyurl.com/7nq3jaq. We’ll have to wait until fall to see how much success he has with it. Happy gardening! Cheri Garrett is a WSU Master Gardener, class of 2011. She’s been gardening for more than 30 years and lives in Monitor.

the right fabrics

for an outdoor space with pizzazz abric can bring so much life and color to your outdoor spaces.

A cheerful pillow or patio umbrella, a fun tablecloth that stays in place when the wind blows, an artfully hung café curtain — all are creative touches that make your outdoor space all your own. Plenty of outdoor fabrics are on the market, but the Sunbrella brand has become an easy choice for me.

ent on woven fabrics that are finished using a technique that creates softness, just like indoor fabrics. They don’t fade, because the color is woven in. It looks the same on the front and the back. This allows them to hold up under North Central Washington’s hot summer sun. Lower quality fabrics have printed-on designs. The texture is stiff and a bit rough to the touch. They don’t have a consistent color on front and back. These fabrics may look nice for a year, but they won’t stand up to the elements over time. They’ll fade, along with your investment!

Our Professional Engineered Roofing Systems Give You Quality & Value at Competitive Prices

Our customers love to coordinate the fabric with the flowers they’ve placed around their outdoor spaces. A slipcover made of this beautiful, durable fabric can add new life to an old piece of upholstered furniture and give it new purpose as the focal point of a welcoming outdoor space. And the best thing about a quality outdoor fabric is that it cleans up with simple soap and water. You can let your kids be kids and dogs be dogs — and still have a lovely space to enjoy in the evening over a glass of wine.

An old sectional with a slipcover made of outdoor fabric transforms a tired piece of furniture into the focal point of this covered outdoor deck. Café curtains tie down for privacy and wind protection. Colorful pillows add pizzazz. Photo provided/Mary Marsten.

can be fitted with a door, as long as you don’t go any wider than the existing opening and the window is a common size, which most are.

Long On Desire but short on experience? Match the DIY project to your tool box & skills

h

ere are some remodeling tips for the do-it-yourselfer that are economical, don’t require a lot of carpentry skills and can give your home a spruced up look.

Beginners

Ed Gardner Special to The Wenatchee World

The easiest thing that you can do is paint. This requires the basic painting supplies of brush, roller, roller tray, tape, masking tape, drop cloth, and a screwdriver to remove the electrical plate covers.

When buying paint and supplies always remember that you get what you pay for.

High-quality paint and supplies will make your job easier and faster, with better results. Quality paint will often cover in a single coat. A quality brush will give you cleaner edges. The biggest mistake do-it-yourselfers make is not having enough paint on the brush or roller. Trying to stretch paint on your walls or ceilings will only result in an uneven appearance.

Intermediates New window treatments, including blinds, can add a lot of pop to your windows and possibly obscure a-not-so pleasant view outside, like the neighbor who doesn’t care what his side yard looks like! Replacement of your front entry door will add curb appeal and value. Entry doors bring the highest percentage return on investment of any home improvement project — over 96 percent, according to a March

2014 article in U.S. News & World Report. Having the right tools for this task will make the job much easier and result in a better-finished product. Hammer, pry bar, reciprocating saw, cordless drill/driver and miter saw are essential tools to successfully install an entry door.

Advanced Replacing a window with a door that leads outside to a patio or new deck is a great addition to a home. Many window openings

The same set of tools as mentioned above will get this job done for you. The hardest part of the job will be cutting the exterior siding straight and clean for the installation of the new exterior trim. You’ll probably also need to reroute wiring below the window, and building code will require an exterior light. Consult or hire a licensed electrician for this task and be aware that an electrical permit is required for this job. The minimum requirements are the same for conversions of electric forced-air furnaces to high-efficiency, air-source heat pumps.

Rebates

on windows, heat pumps and more

windows must be either single pane or metal framed. The rebate is $8 per square foot of window.

w

ENERGY STAR insulated exterior entry doors. Look for the Energy Star logo or NFRC label to qualify. Existing doors must be uninsulated or otherwise substandard. Rebate is $40 per door.

hen it comes to getting great value for your spring home improvement dollars, consider investing in energy-efficient appliances, windows and doors that qualify for rebates from the Chelan County PUD. New rebate programs this spring include:

Mark Wiser Senior Conservation Advisor, Chelan County PUD

Super-efficient windows with a “U-factor” of .22 or lower. Look for U-factor on the “NFRC label,” which can be found on all ENERGY STAR® qualified windows, doors, and skylights. To qualify, existing

Super-efficient manufactured homes. These ENERGY STAR and ECO-RATED homes are designed with energy efficiency in mind and are inspected at the plant for years of efficient operation. Rebate is $850 per home. Find details on those and other programs at chelanpud.org under “Energy Conservation.” The wait is about to end for Chelan County customers who are seeking a rebate to help pay to install a heat pump or upgrade an existing unit.

Chelan PUD is working out the final details on a new program that offers $500 to $1,400 rebates on energy-efficient, airsource heat pumps for single-family homes. Look for qualifying units that have a “Heating Seasonal Performance Factor” (HSPF) of a least 9.0 and a “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 14. Rebates will cover replacing an existing heat pump or upgrading from zonal (wall or baseboard) to an air-source heat pump.

Another new addition available soon for Chelan County electric customers are surge suppressors for electronics. Most TVs that are attached to DVRs or cable boxes don’t ever turn off. They remain “on” in the background to record programs or respond to the push of a remote-control button. A new type of surge protector will turn off all your electronic equipment and protect it from sudden surges caused by lightning or other disruptions to your electrical system. Final details are still being developed, but this program will offer a rebate of $12 – enough to cover most of the cost of the new suppressor.
