LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK
hen you picture the average yoga class, you might see a small, stuffy room full of yoga mats and water bottles. But what you wouldn’t picture is a snowshoe clad group practicing yoga in the snow. Yet, Yogachelan does just that. Yogachelan goes beyond the average yoga studio. The owner, Lynda Kennedy, takes pride in the unique classes they offer, and has created dozens of different classes to attract many yoga enthusiasts. Her extensive list of events includes Wedding Yoga, Paddleboard Yoga, Snowga, Winery Yoga, and targeted classes that focus on improvement. Kennedy attributes these event opportunities to the location they’re in, saying, “This beauty draws us outside for our yoga practice.” Since many classes are pinpointed in beautiful locations, Yogachelan makes for a visitor hotspot.
LAKE CHELAN this week
Travellers and locals not only get a calming workout, but a chance to get to know the Chelan Valley better. “We love providing unique experiences for our locals and our visitors and perhaps an opportunity for someone to try yoga for the first time,” she said. Though these uncommon classes seem to lift Yogachelan apart from the rest, Kennedy says her education and experience are what really set this studio apart from others. “I have a bachelor of science in Kinesiology, bachelor of science in Clinical Psychology, two years of nursing, E-RYT [Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher], YACEP [Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider], as well as several other special yoga trainings,” Kennedy said. The instructor has taught thousands of hours of yoga through the years and is proficient in business, operations, marketing, and more.

A yoga class is held at Tsillian Cellars. This is part of a Yogachelan series held throughout the summer at the winery. Kennedy expresses her joy for squashing people’s fears of yoga, saying, “I love to teach and love helping people find that they can do things they thought they couldn’t. To help them let go of fears and can’ts. To open them to an improved quality of life.” She also finds that yoga can be the cure to many health problems, and advises anyone considering surgery to stop into her studio first. “I love that yoga has made my students healthier. They tell me they feel more confident and empowered,” she said.

a long list. Her business volunteers at special events, offers a weekly class at an assisted living home as well as a free class for cancer patients and their caregivers, and is closely tied with the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce and the Historic Downtown Chelan Association.
Lake Chelan is such a special place to live. The lake, the mountains, the weather, the views, the sunsets, the sunrises, the four seasons, the town, the people, the feeling.
New Yogachelan instructor Jessie Simmons agreed with Kennedy, saying, “Yoga is probably one of the most accessible ways that somebody can make a major positive impact on their own mental and physical health. It’s something anybody can do, and there’s a wide variety of classes to fit every need.”
”
When asked about Yogachelan’s role in the Chelan community, Kennedy had
It’s no question that Kennedy is connected to her community. “Lake Chelan is such a special place to live. The lake, the mountains, the weather, the views, the sunsets, the sunrises, the four seasons, the town, the people, the feeling.”
Instructors Lynda Kennedy and Jessie Simmons stand in a heart opening position with Lake Chelan in the background. Views like this are common with Yogachelan.
Looking ahead, Kennedy has plans to continue working with boys basketball teams and other athletic programs. In addition, she has a yoga retreat and safari to Kenya in October, put together by Yogachelan.
But overall, Kennedy hopes that “the future gives me the opportunity to continue to share the health benefits of yoga, the importance of moving our bodies, the need to slow down and listen to our bodies, and that we deserve to be healthy and to take time for ourselves.”

BOOK OF JOY - His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Archbishop
HALLELUJAH ANYWAY: REDISCOVERING MERCY - by Anne Lamott
Two spiritual giants. Five days. One timeless question. Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships—or, as they would say, because of them— they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama’s home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness’s eightieth birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: How do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering?
“Mercy is radical kindness,” Anne Lamott writes in her enthralling and heartening book, Hallelujah Anyway. It’s the permission you give others—and yourself—to forgive a debt, to absolve the unabsolvable, to let go of the judgment and pain that make life so difficult. Full of Lamott’s trademark honesty, humor and forthrightness, Hallelujah Anyway is profound and caring, funny and wise—a hopeful book of hands-on spirituality.

THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10 - Ruth Ware
THE NIGHTINGALE - Kristin Hannah
A classic “paranoid woman” story with a modern twist in this tense, claustrophobic mystery...The cast of characters, their conversations, and the luxurious but confining setting all echo classic Agatha Christie; in fact, the structure of the mystery itself is an old one: a woman insists murder has occurred, everyone else says she’s crazy. But Lo is no wallflower; she is a strong and determined modern heroine who refuses to doubt the evidence of her own instincts. (Kirkus Reviews)
With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, wartorn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

NORSE MYTHOLOGY - Neil Gaiman
2
2 17
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. From Gaiman’s deft and witty prose emerges the gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to dupe others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

COACH WOODEN AND ME - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar When future NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was still an 18-yearold high school basketball prospect from New York City named Lew Alcindor, he accepted a scholarship from UCLA largely on the strength of Coach John Wooden’s reputation as a winner. It turned out to be the right choice, as Alcindor and his teammates won an unprecedented three NCAA championship titles. But it also marked the beginning of one of the most extraordinary and enduring friendships in the history of sports. In Coach Wooden and Me, Abdul-Jabbar reveals the inspirational story of how his bond with John Wooden evolved from a historymaking coach-player mentorship into a deep and genuine friendship that transcended sports, shaped the course of both men’s lives, and lasted for half a century.
