A musical performer based out of Seattle, 28-year-old Jessie Siren has been writing songs for a little over a decade. In 2015, Seattle voted her their #1 artist, ahead of hometown rap legend, Macklemore. On June 29th, she will be performing at the Rocky Pond Winery as a part of their weekly live music lineup. Siren wrote in a few answers to our questions below, discussing her life as a musician. HB: When did you decide you wanted to sing for a living? Was there a specific moment or was it a gradual decision?

JS: I’ve been writing and singing and playing piano/guitar for as long as I can remember! But I actually never really thought at all about what I would do “for a living” or be “when I grow up”. I remember the first real gig I played was 4 hours for $50. My fingers were blood blistered and in so much pain at the end of it. I definitely wasn’t thinking it was a good money-making move then, but somehow I still loved
Then it was a slow revelation. I always worked a few odd jobs at a time (gardener, yoga instructor, barista, nanny, waitress to name a few) but as I got better and the gigs started to pay, I just remember thinking one day, “maybe I can afford to stop all this other stuff, and if I can’t maybe stopping all of this other stuff will leave space for me to grow in my music.” So I quit everything! A leap of faith! And here we are. Booked solid through the Summer! Not rolling in the dough, but let’s just say there are no more 4 hour gigs for $50. And my music career is still blossoming! HB: What has been the most difficult part of your musical career? JS: The answer to this question came surprisingly quick. Difficult doesn’t mean bad in this circumstance, it just means there has been WORK. Lots of it. The hardest part for me on my journey has been finding my voice, listening

THE TASTING ROOM AND PERFORMANCE AREA AT ROCKY POND to my “genius” (that small voice outside of me that sings me my song back to me) and staying authentic to both of those things (my voice, my message). It’s easy to get lost in the rat race of trying to be like so-and-so, or to write a song like this or that. Also, rejection. It’s a beautiful thing to learn that just because you aren’t someone cup of tea, doesn’t make you...less. Learning every day not to reject myself. HB: Bill Johnson said, “If you don’t live by the praise of people, you won’t die by their criticism.” How much of your career has been ignoring bad criticism?
less than to share your message.”
So I try to do that. I am always a work in progress — I have bad days where I want everyone to like me, where I feel like no one does. But mostly I feel like if a song shows itself to me, it’s my job to share it — not to make sure everyone likes me. Ya know? I love people, I’m crazy about them. And I have learned through experience I love people, I’m that people feel and connect crazy about them. with what is authentic. ”
JS: I love this. I remember one of the first big gigs I ever had — I was 18 and being flown to Mexico to sing at a yoga retreat for a week at a beautiful resort. I sat next to my dear sweet mentor on the flight down there and just cried; I had my guitar, a handful of songs and no experience — I felt like an imposter. “What if I’m not good enough?” I asked her. And she simply said, “if you have a message that is trying to move through you, through your music, and you do not share it, you are doing a disservice to the universe. Sing for nothing more or
HB: Rocky Pond’s website said you were currently working on your first album in ten years. What is your favorite part about creating this album?
JS: I put Whiskey Baby out when I was 18 & have written literally hundreds of songs in between — some shit, some great. Just...never been good at this whole music business thing. Thought it was about time to get some tracks down! Excited to share! My favorite part of it is...you know the way vacuuming can be super rewarding? Those nice clean lines? Well, recording can be that for an artist. I get to see my work in nice clean lines, and unlike a clean floor, an album is forever! Exciting. Continued on page 15

The History Behind the Night:
Delightful little wineries have populated the Chelan hills for decades, serving locals and tourists tasty wine from some of the best vineyards in Washington state. One particular winery, Rocky Pond, provides live music at their venue every Thursday night. Each week, a talented musician makes the trip to the gorgeous winery and performs for an expectant audience. This week, Jessie Siren, an artist from Seattle who is currently working on her debut album that will release sometime this year, will be performing at the winery on the 29th. In 2015, Siren was voted the #1 artist in Seattle, placing above the likes of artists such as Macklemore, who came in at #2. Jill Babcock, the tasting room manager, started what she calls Thursday Night Music at Rocky Pond! in September of last year. She began the weekly tradition after she noticed a “lack of music in the valley during the off season/ during the week.” Here in June, almost a full ten months since the inception of the event, Babcock notes the winery’s revenue percentage has increased. At an initial, topical glance, the weekly live music could certainly be the reason for Rocky Pond’s bump in profit.
“It brings people together, and we are such a small community,” Babcock said. “[Thursday Night Music at Rocky Pond!] gives people the opportunity to enjoy local musicians that they may not have heard before, or have wanted to hear.” A year into her position, Babcock has contributed a fresh spin on the local wine industry. The live performances certainly generate some unique vibes in an industry where the atmosphere is more laid-back. Many wineries in the region do occasionally invite musical guests. That being said, no other winery in the county showcases artists year-round. And many wineries prefer more soothing tones in the background of their wine tasting rooms. Not Rocky Pond. They place their performers front and center, and live performances from talented musicians enhances the entire experience. While customers of the venue enjoy listening to first-rate local musicians, they can sip some award-winning wine. Rocky Pond’s very own 2015 Syrah won Double Gold at the Seattle Wine Awards while their 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and 2015 Viognier each earned Gold. The winery is located on East Woodin Avenue, near the corner of South Emerson Street. Live music is performed most Thursday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Lake Chelan This Week
INSIDE THE WENATCHEE WINE AWARDS know: the wines from North Central Washington continue to improve year after year.
Judging for the wine competition portion of the Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival was held in early June, with nine judges rating the 230 entries submitted for judging. Judges awarded 22 Double Gold medals and 38 gold medals, a nearly 60% increase for top medals from a year ago when the judges handed out 10 Double Gold and 28 Gold Medals from the 235 entries. Those wines and all the winners will be celebrated at the 7th Annual Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival on August 26 at the Town Toyota Center. At the conclusion of this year’s judging, comments from judges who have judged the wines in past competitions affirmed what many regional wine drinkers already
Landis, a wine expert of considerable stature in U.S. and international judging circles, said she came away with a great appreciation for the region’s winemaking capabilities. She’ll write about her experience in the September-October edition of Foothills Magazine, which will feature full results from the competition.

unique tasting experience, and we recommend you visit as many as possible. For example, Vin du Lac offers an outdoor tasting bar and patio with food and occasionally live music. Lake Chelan Winery has a cheese shop inside the tasting room and also a BBQ restaurant in the vineyard where you can sit and have a delicious meal. C.R. Sandidge Wines and Ancestry Cellars are located in Downtown Manson with several others and are smaller tasting rooms providing an intimate experience. Karma Vineyards specializes in champagne and has a French-style cave that visitors can tour and learn about the process of making champagne in the traditional method. Tsillan Cellars is a sprawling Tuscan-style winery with a full restaurant and incredible views.
LCTW: What should a beginner expect for their first time tasting?
Campbell: When you enter a tasting room, you’ll
typically be greeted by a staff member or often the owner or winemaker. Some wineries have set tasting lists and some allow you to choose several wines from their complete list to try. You’ll receive pours of each wine and learn about what type of grapes went into the wine, how it was made and the flavors that wine offers. You can ask questions about the winery, specific wines and the wine making process in

each winery?
Campbell: A tasting usually includes around three to six pours.
LCTW: What should you do if you don’t like the wine you tried?
Campbell: If you don’t like the wine, you’re always welcome to skip it and move on to the next one. If you can identify what you don’t like about it, the winemaker or staff member can usually guide you to something more suited to your palate.
LCTW: How much money should you expect to spend on a day wine tasting?
Campbell: Tasting fees vary at each winery, but most are between $5 and $10 and are waived with the purchase of a bottle of wine. A few of the wineries in Lake Chelan have complimentary tastings.
LCTW: Is there a dress code you should follow? Fancy or casual?
Campbell: There is no dress code - just wear
something comfortable! Some of our wineries have outdoor areas where you can enjoy your wine and the view of Lake Chelan.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE - MARGARET ATWOOD In this futuristic and dystopic novel, Offred has been forced to become a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. Women are no longer allowed to read and Handmaids are no more than sexual slaves that serve as surrogates for couples who desire children but are unable to have them. Offred must find a way to bear a child or she will be sent to the “Wasteland”. “Funny, unexpected, horrifying and altogether convincing, The Handmaid’s Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force.

THE GENIUS OF BIRDS - JENNIFER ACKERMAN
From the highly acclaimed, multiple awardwinning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.
After reading this book, perhaps one will not be offended when called a “birdbrain.” It turns out that birds are rather intelligent creatures and recent research concludes some birds may rival primates and humans in their remarkable forms of intelligence. This book will inform and surprise the reader.

It is 1922, and Count Alexander Rostov is deemed “an unrepentant aristocrat” and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol hotel, located directly across from the Kremlin. The Count creates his own world in the hotel, forges friendships and relationships, and must save the life of a young girl. JESSIE SIREN FROM PAGE 3 HB: The website also said you were voted the #1 artist in Seattle, ahead of Macklemore. Describe your emotions when you found out. For people!

He has passed now, but that piano music is a part of me, that expression something I will always strive for.
