There’s plenty of activities for would-be Pirates of all ages to enjoy.

willing to lose his mysterious prize, dove into the water after it. He held onto the treasure chest and it took him quickly down to the crushing depths of the nearly 1,500-foot-deep lake. Unbeknownst to the crew, two female stowaways were on board who kept watchful eyes on the chest. Stewards to its precious contents, they too jumped in after the chest and as they hit the water the crew watched with disbelief as it appeared that their feet transformed into fish-like fins. Mermaids! One went after the chest, the other

after the Captain. The Captain was taken to the shore and the chest was taken deep, deep down into a underwater cavern. Where its contents, an egg, cracked open and a hatchling emerged. Thus the equally mysterious legend of the Lake Chelan Dragon was born. Environmentally Friendly biking tours in lake chelan While many visitors may be satisfied gazing through their thick, glass car windows at the valley’s attractions, Chelan Electric Bikes encourages people to ditch that idea entirely. Rather than a self-guided, stuck-in-a-car tour, this company wants you experiencing Chelan in a completely different way: on electric bicycles. Chelan Electric Bikes offers tours that not only show you around the area, but also teach you some history and make you laugh as well. Their tour guides have a reputation for being hilarious, and the company has a reputation for being one of the best winery tours in the region. The owners put an emphasis on seeing Chelan through fresh air, in an environmentally friendlier way than via car. They want their customers to take in the beauty with clear visions, to smell the fresh air, and taste the carefully

crafted wine. And there’s no need to worry about getting tired, thanks to the electric half of the bike. Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or you’ve lived in Chelan for years, Chelan Electric Bikes claims that everyone will get something out of this experience. Their website claims that, “locals can learn something new about their hometown, whether it is a new landmark or a new route. Our tours are also great for locals with out-of-town visitors who want to see the sites. This is a unique and thrilling opportunity that will leave your guests thanking you for taking them on this amazing ride.” If you’re interested in taking one of their three different tours, visit chelanelectricbikes.com to make reservations. And, if you’re booking a trip on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, use the code “earlyweek” for a discount.

It’s the largest gathering of wineries in the region, and the only professionally-judged wine event dedicated to wines produced in Chelan, Douglas, Grant and Okanogan counties. And this year it’s bigger than ever—more food, wine, beers, ciders, distilleries and eateries.

RIVERWALK’S SUMMER PICKS

1

THE NIGHTINGALE -

KRISTIN HANNAH

With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France-a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

2

THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10

- RUTH WARE

A classic “paranoid woman” story with a modern twist in this tense, claustrophobic mystery...The cast of characters, their conversations, and the luxurious but confining setting all echo classic Agatha Christie; in fact, the structure of the mystery itself is an old one: a woman insists murder has occurred, everyone else says she’s crazy. But Lo is no wallflower; she is a strong and determined modern heroine who refuses to doubt the evidence of her own instincts. (Kirkus Reviews)

THE HANDMAID’S TALE - MARGARET ATWOOD In this futuristic and dystopic novel, Offred has been forced to become a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. Women are no longer allowed to read and Handmaids are no more than sexual slaves that serve as surrogates for couples who desire children but are unable to have them. Offred must find a way to bear a child or she will be sent to the “Wasteland”. “Funny, unexpected, horrifying and altogether convincing, The Handmaid’s Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and tour de force.”

But while in Witchita Falls, the captain is offered a $50 gold piece if he would only deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. The four hundred miles trip is fraught with dangers and a bonding of these two unlikely companions.
