ore than 40 years later, April Monday still leans over her desk, one foot tucked under the other, an alcohol lamp burning as she sculpts wax with the same knife she started making jewelry with. Having taught herself to make rings first as a teenager in Hawaii, Monday took her skill to the shores of Lake Chelan where she and business partner Gene Starcher opened the fine jewelry store Goldsmith Lucerne in 1976. Designing custom and original rings, pendants, earrings and bracelets with her unique buildup method, Monday has seen her customers through their biggest life moments, and here she reflects on some of her own.

Q: You have been selling your designs in Chelan for more than 40 years, but I’m sure you had made pieces long before that. When did you first start? A: “The first pieces of jewelry I ever made and sold, I was 17 (years old). My sister and I made straw flower jewelry. There was a funny era between beatniks and hippie, it was kind of Mod. It came out of England, Twiggy. So my sister and I made Mod jewelry, and sold it in Hawaii back in the early ‘70s. I started out wanting to be a painter.”

Q: Why did you settle on jewelry-making then? A: “I kind of fell into this because a man wanted to buy a ring for me, and I said, ‘Well it’s just this little band with a blob of stuff on it. It’s got to be more interesting than that.’ So he and I both got interested. We wanted to figure out how it’s made. There were three of us who taught ourselves how to make jewelry, and I got a job apprenticing a little jeweler and he wouldn’t really let me do wax work...so I moved up to Lucerne and rented the old school house, and we taught ourselves to make jewelry. It was just so intriguing to me that you could take some substance and turn it into gold.” Q: How would you describe your method of making rings? A: “I take flat sheet wax, and I kind of doodle a picture. It’s a very slow process, but it is like three dimensional painting. You have to have the heat and the alcohol lamp burning, and you can use this (knife) almost as a paint brush and add waxes. It’s called the buildup method... most makers take hard blocks of wax and they cut it. I build it up.” Q: Why did you choose this method? A: “It flows; it is softer. It’s very quiet. It’s three dimensional painting for me.”

Q: What were some of the first designs you created from wax? A: “The first rose ring I ever did I cut a 100 petals out of sheet wax and put it into this thing and made a ring and sold it. (The rings) were so different from what people were used to seeing…and I was so shy about it.” Q: Really? How did you overcome insecurity? A: “(One day) I was left in the little shop in Carmel (Calif.), and this lady comes in and she was really old, and she said ‘I want to look at these rings.’ And so she did; she put them on her hand and they were just unusual designs, some of my florals because I really loved to do florals, and she said, ‘I traveled all over the world, and these are really different, and I’m going next door to a little coffee shop, and I’m going to think about this for a while.’ And she came back in about an hour, and she bought five of my rings. And from then on I was never afraid about talking to people about it. I think that sometimes in life we are just divinely guided by people.” Q: Starting a business in a seasonal town like Chelan also must have been intimidating. What pushed the two of you to do it here? A: “The old guard here was so welcoming and trusting and giving and so kind to me I fell in love with them, not to mention the hills and the water, and I lived up lake and that’s magical. I did the art show at (Campbell’s) Veranda and I kept looking over at this space, and I knew I wanted a shop here. I think for me as a woman, to be able to make a living from scratch with my hands and imagination was a great opportunity.” Q: And that opportunity really became a success. Was it difficult to build a base of customers in the beginning considering how fine jewelry isn’t your everyday purchase? A: “If you are in it for the long haul, rings wear out, styles change, people’s taste changes, they get divorced, they have their stones they want to put it into something else. (Rings) are emotional commemoratives, and to me that is the most important part of it all. I have people who collect my work. I have fancy ladies in Seattle who wear it to the opera, and I have country women who have rings they work in.” Q: With so many different types of customers, how do you tailor custom designs? A: “I like to interview my customers. Where have you been? Where are you going? I want to know their lifestyle, design preference. I study their hand; I can get a pretty good idea just from their hand what works for them and whatever stones that they have. Lifestyle is huge, how they use their hands. Is it going to be a ring they are going to wear all the time?”

LCTW photos/Reilly Kneedler April Monday, 67, uses an alcohol burner to heat up a knife she uses to mold wax jewelry designs in her shop Goldsmith Lucerne. The excess wax goes onto the “tower” on the left which Monday has been building for over 40 years. Opposite: A row of tools sits in the workroom of Goldsmith Lucerne. Q: Apart from customizing, how would you describe the style of your designs? A: “My style is probably is more about the fit and comfort of making something. I like geometrics. I prefer flowing lines. I like florals, abstracts. Does it have a specific style? I think people recognize my work, so I suppose it does. They call them ‘April rings.’ They don’t all look alike, but they have a specific feeling.” Q: Has that feeling changed over the years? A: “When I was younger, I could do a lot (of orders). I didn’t like to sleep when I was younger; now it’s a problem. Twenty-five years ago, I could do 60 pieces a month, not anymore, but 25 years ago my pieces weren’t as complicated either.” Q: I have got to ask, how long does it take you to design a ring? A: “You cannot put time on a good job, you really can’t. People say, ‘How much time did it take for you to do this?’ and I say ‘Uhh,’ because I have to work on several pieces at once because my energy level shifts. I have focused energy where I can do a lot of fine finish work, and I have this creative energy where I can

just make designs and put stones in. So I may have 50 pieces in different stages on my desk. If you are really into it, that is how it happens.” Q: What is next for you? A: “I’m looking at the next phase of my life and what I’m going to do. It’s a really interesting point in my life, but I have this other art medium that I really want to explore. It’s collage, working with color and shape which is what I do. But it was definitely a gift from God to get through all these years.”

HIGHLIGHTS

Lake Chelan This Week

Friday, July 31, 2015

summer highlights The 2015 summer and fall seasons are quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor. This weekend brings the Lake Chelan Rodeo to town, this year on July 31 and Aug. 1. See all the cowboys and cowgirls, hear the golden voice of rodeo announcer Cody Hodge, and be thrilled at the amazing feats of the McMillan Family Trick Riders that keep you on the edge of your seat with rodeo action. It’s the greatest show on dirt. See updates about this event on their Facebook page. In August, it’s the three-day Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival, held Aug. 14-15. Now in its 6th year, this event takes place in Riverwalk Park located in downtown Chelan. Along with fine arts, crafts and music there’s a children’s area full of fun and adventure. One popular event is the silent auction where patrons will have the opportunity to bid on donated pieces of art from some of the top artists in the Chelan community. The event is sponsored by the Lake Chelan Arts Council and the proceeds go to support the local art community including the murals, sculptures and scholarships. More information can be found on their website, lakechelanartscouncil.com.

The 6th Annual Mahogany & Merlot Vintage Boat Show is an ‘on-the-water’ boat show and free family-friendly event held Oct. 2-4. Classic cars will be showcased on the shore along with Vintage Unlimited Hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Seattle, Vintage Inboard ‘Limited Class’ Hydroplanes and Antique & Classic Mahogany Runabouts from the Golden Era of pleasure boating. Hydro exhibition races will begin early Saturday morning, plus there’s a classic boat parts swap meet, wine barrel furniture, delicious food booths or enjoy the action from the beer and wine garden.

A boy contemplates bringing a metal sunflower home from the Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival last year. The three-day event brings an array of vendors with their treasures of arts and crafts. Proceeds support the local art community, such as for murals, sculptures and scholarships.

On Sept. 12, this area is host to the 14th annual Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K runs. Presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the race benefits Chelan and Manson High School teams and programs, as well as the local chapter of Girls on the Run. Lace up your running shoes and register at lakechelanmarathon.com.

Back for a second year, the Manson Summer Nights Concert Series returns with an amazing lineup of artists performing their own new music from a variety of genres. Held every Sunday evening through Sept. 6, gates open at 6 p.m. It’s outdoor festival seating— bring your lawn chair or blanket to Leffler Field, the open field between Wells Fargo Bank and Mountain View Lodge as you come into Manson, just before Wapato Point Parkway.

In October, the first two weekends of the month are dedicated to the Lake Chelan Crush Festival. Celebrate the grape harvest and watch the grapes as they tumble through the press and taste the raw juice. Wineries throughout the Chelan Valley have events, dinners and special tastings, Oct. 3-4 and 10-11. Details are at lakechelanwinevalley.com.

Free parking; food and drinks will be available for purchase. Concerts are held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, 12 and under free. Check out the performers and purchase tickets at mansonsummernights.com.

Nothing but green

Only a 45 minute drive from Lake Chelan, Gamble Sands golf course in Brewster is rated at the top of its game

By Bryce Newberry For Lake Chelan This Week

Voted Golf Magazine ’s Best New Course in 2014, Gamble Sands in Brewster is a must-see during a visit to Chelan, even if it’s just to enjoy a meal. “We were only open three months and it came out as the 73rd best golf course in the world,” general manager David Christenson said, “which is pretty stunning after a three-month operating season.” According to Christenson, the scenery at Gamble Sands stands out, with sweeping views of the Columbia River and North Cascade Mountains. The 18 hole course is also contoured in the player’s favor — Christenson said it’s more likely for a ball to roll on to the green rather than out into the fairway. Or worse, back toward the golfer. If visiting during summer, Christenson said extra water and sunscreen are necessary. “It’s built on 300 feet of sand and there’s not a tree out there,” he said. There isn’t much shade to take cover under, so cooling off may only be possible with the use of a golf cart, Christenson said. The grass is all fine-fescue, Christenson said, so it plays “firm and fast.” The designer, Scotland-native David McLay Kidd, built the course with speed slots so certain shots would catch the slopes and gain more distance.

If you are on vacation in the Chelan area, it wouldn’t be permitted to necessarily wear your lake clothes to the golf course. Collared shirts are required. And, if you plan on wearing shorts, the hem can be no more than four inches above the knee. If golfing isn’t necessarily your idea of a vacation activity, Christenson said the Danny Boy Bar and Grill is a big hit among visitors. “That’s not only popular with golfers, but people from Wenatchee, Chelan, and the surrounding area,” he said. Or, maybe you’re looking for a nice place to shop. “Most people come in and say, ‘This is the best pro shop I’ve ever seen’,” Christenson said. Nice clothing is required in these areas, too. Gamble Sands also offers golf lessons. It’s $65 for a private lesson. Golfing costs anywhere from $85 up to $160, depending on the day of the week, season, and whether golfers choose to walk or ride a cart, Christenson said. The course also offers private caddies, which cost up to $100. Rental equipment is available as well, Christenson said, at $50 per set. All prices include tax. Currently, the course is accepting reservations through Oct. 31. To book a tee time, go to gamblesands.com or call 509-436-8323. Photo provided/Larry Lambrecht

Win a round of golf for two at Gamble Sands! *Email chelaninfo@ wenatcheeworld.com by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. Directions: From E Woodin Avenue in Chelan, go east on US-97 Alt. lulu boutique

13

By Emily Cieslak Victorian damask wallpaper and hot pink accents. Classy yet fun.

Ordering from Los Angeles, Agostinelli said she “works hard to not carry anything you can get elsewhere in Chelan.”

When sales associate Brianna Wright describes Lulu Boutique in Chelan, she says just that, “modernly elegant.”

Never heard of laser cut underwear before? Buy your first pair in the store from Undie Couture by Lauren Copeland.

“I was going for a Frenchie boutique kind of feel, and that’s why I ended up with Lulu,” owner Tara Agostinelli said. “She was my poodle growing up and (I) thought (the name) fit.”

Now, they don’t just sell the bare essentials; most of the brands they carry are premuim. Here you will find the nail polish brand not carried in drugstores (Butter London) or denim from Miss Me and Rock Revival where every silver stitch is intentional.

For Lake Chelan This Week

While most boutiques specialize in a few categories, Lulu carries practically everything, from swimsuits, to clothes, to cosmetics, to jewelry, to lingerie. With a hair salon next door, they are your go-to spot for some self-indulgence. “I love flea market finds and all things girly,” Agostinelli said. “If my husband complained about pink stuff at our house, I assumed there were other women like me.”

While Wright said some items can reach above $100, don’t be alarmed, flash sales let you shop with pleasure, not guilt. So go ahead, stock on up.

Store Hours:

Top: A shopper looks through the clothing racks in Lulu’s main room. Some of the shop’s top selling brands are TOMS, Miss Me, Three Dot, Hanky Panky, Lenna & Eva and Farm House Fresh.

Lake Chelan This Week

The Star Side of Bird Hill By Naomi Jackson In the summer of 1989, sisters Dionne and Phaedra are shuttled from their Brooklyn life to their grandmother Hyacinth’s home in Barbados. Reminiscent of Jamaica Kincaid, Jackson’s coming-of-age tale springs from the page with humor, beauty, and heartbreak.

The Girl from the Garden By Parnaz Foroutan In this delicate, rich story, we are witness to a society little-known and oft-veiled: the home life of Jewish women in the Middle East.

Kitchens of the Great Midwest By J. Ryan Stradal A different character and a different dish are featured in each chapter, and we are left with a beautiful image of food, culture, and family.

Let Me Explain You: A Novel By Annie Liontas Annie Liontas unveils this family layer by layer, exposing the darkest secrets and the most loving ones as well.

Death and Mr. Pickwick: A Novel By Stephen Jarvis A rollicking great novel, brimming with vivid characters, that takes the position that perhaps Charles Dickens didn’t completely create his first, and arguably greatest, novel.

Young Adult The Accident Season By Moïra Fowley-Doyle Once a year, every year, Cara’s relatively normal life gets a little dangerous. Her mother locks away knives, pads sharp corners, and avoids anything potentially dangerous -- but Cara and her family always manage to sustain an unusual number of injuries all the same. Is the accident season real? And why does it happen just to them?

Fans of the Impossible Life By Kate Scelsa A captivating and profound debut novel about complicated love and the friendships that have the power to transform you forever.

Young Readers Circus Mirandus By Cassie Beasley Micah’s beloved grandfather is dying. When Grandpa Ephraim tells Micah that the stories about Circus Miranda are real, Micah just knows that he can find a way to help his grandpa. All it will take is a miracle.

The Entirely True Story of the Unbelievable FIB By Adam Shaughnessy A book full of Norse mythology, puzzlesolving, plot twists, and humor. We get some spot on insight into what it feels like to be a kid and lose faith in the idea that grown-ups will always keep you safe.
