eople aimlessly stroll through the verdant stalls of the Chelan Farmers Market, their worries forgotten as they wonder at art crafted by local tradesman. The charming and casual nature of the stands selling local produce, flowers and much more is a far cry from the sheltered environment of a supermarket. Wendie MacDonald, a Chelan resident, has made a habit of frequenting the farmers market every year with her husband. “All the fresh flowers and produce are beautiful,” MacDonald said. “People like to know where they’re buying their produce and art from.” Vendors come from all over Chelan and Douglas

county to provide a variance in goods. Almost every kind of produce imaginable can be found, including fresh cherries, lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, apples...the list goes on. Goods range from fresh flowers, honey and jewelry sold by Bernice Bernetz’s Natural Stone Jewelry. “It had been a hobby of mine for 21 years. The market gave me a place I could come out and sell it,” Bernetz said. “The vendors here all have wonderful products. It gives tourists and locals something to do while they’re here.” Vendors change from week to week; stopping in multiple times may reward you with different wares.
“It kind of varies depending on the time of the season,” market manager, Seth Christian said. “As different crops come into season, we’ll have

INSIDE STORY farmers come in. Then we have our steady crafters that are here every week. It’s a social week for everyone.” The farmers market was founded six years ago by the former manager Sherri Palmater. Christian has been involved with the market for the last four years and becoming the current manager was a big step for him. “It’s one thing to watch somebody do it and another for me to be on point,” Christian said. “A lot of it is the details. Getting people where they need to be and being flexible as we set up when people are showing up… Managing different personalities and making everyone happy has been a challenge. We want all of our vendors to be happy, and I try to accommodate them as best I
can.” The market could have anywhere from 20 to 25 vendors one Thursday evening. Christian estimates that as many as 2,000 people wander through the farmer’s market on a good day. “The first few weeks in May are slow,” Christian said. “The different schools are still in. Once they go on vacation, there are more families here in town, so business goes up. We’re looking forward to a really good season this year.” Christian attributes the success of the market to the setting and all of the varied vendors. “The first thing is that it’s right next to Riverwalk Park. You have the lake. It’s a beautiful setting, because it’s in the evening you catch the cooler part of the
day,” Christian said. “We have a winery that does wine tasting [at the venue]. It’s a really good opportunity to engage with people who are really involved with the agricultural community.” Christian hopes the market will rebound from the loss of vendors caused by wildfires two summers ago. Christian’s family has a long history of farming, leading him to become a farmer himself. “I have always felt like [agriculture] was a really important intersection between the environment and community,” Christian said. “We eat every day, that’s one of our direct connections with the natural world.”

he Manson Farmers Market has been a staple of its agriculture community for 36 years, expanding with new vendors and products. “It was started as an outreach to local farmers,” the market’s current organizer Gordon Lesder said. Lesder has organized the market for the last 20 years. “When we first started, we had two or three farmers selling cherries. We’ve expanded into what we are now.” The market is set on the Manson Grange property on 157 E. Wapato Way and is filled with approximately twenty vendors selling flowers, cherries, home-grown fruits, vegetables and even alpaca products. The market offers space to vendors at $50 for a full season or $5 for one day. If the vendor is still in school, however, they can set up shop for free. Eight to ten students could be set up at the farmer’s market during a day, Lesder said. Ages range from 10 to 18 years old. Cody Krumm, a 17 year-old artist, decided to take full advantage of setting up a free booth, where he sells spray paint art with a consistent theme of planets.
Krumm’s pieces go from $15 to $20 apiece. “I’ve been working on my pieces for about a year now,” Krumm said. “I started with planets because it was the easiest to do… I’ll use random circles and what-not to sketch out the circles and then add in the detail.“ Another vendor that frequents the farmer’s market is alpaca farmer Joana Fught. Fught sells felted soap, hand-sewn yarn, as well as dryer balls which she claims lasts for years. “The farmer’s market lets us get our products out,” Fught said. “It helps educate people on alpacas and what they use them for.” Unfortunately, the venue lost many vendors due to the Sleepy Hollow fires. Lesder has been working hard to reach out to local farmers to expand. “We’ve been making it known that we have openings,” Lesder said. “It’s a total volunteer operation. Grange is our main sponsor, and all the money we make goes to scholarship funds.” The market donates at least $500 a year to the Manson Scholarship fund. Every day customers walk through the farmer’s market and are impressed by the sheer variety of local goods available to them.

LULU BOUTIQUE:
SUNWORKS AT LAKE CHELAN:
What this place lacks in size, it makes up with the attitude in trendy clothing, shoes, jewelry, swimwear and décor from brands like TOMS, Vitamin A and Havaianas. We can’t decide if the baseball cap with “lake hair” or “jeep hair don’t care” describes us better. 116 S. Emerson St., Chelan
Picture a long wall of vivid bikinis and one pieces with a few cover ups sprinkled in between. With this selection of swimwear from brands like O’Neil and Gossip, you are sure to find the one. They also have a mens section. 205 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan
MAIN STREET GALLERY:
SWIM WORLD:
Come for the art, leave with clothes. Paintings and pastels line red walls as racks of artsy clothing fill the center. The owners seek brands from New York to make the selection of clothing, accessories and some formal dresses as unique as possible. 208 E Woodin Ave., Chelan
It’s easy to walk into the store and forget why “swim” is in the name, with all the clothing, decorations and jewelry. But don’t forget the water fixtures and outdoor décor that brought you here. 146 E Woodin Ave., Chelan
PALAZZO PONDS & WATERFALLS:
Before there was Instagram to prove you traveled, there were T-shirts. Go hipster and stock up on shirts, sweatpants, hats, etc. with Lake Chelan written in some way across. You can also order your own designs. Did we mention the prices are fantastic? 140 E. Woodin Ave, Chelan
Though further east on Woodin Ave., you must stop by this outdoor and indoor store for its gorgeous collection of water fixtures, aquatic plants, furniture, fencing and koi fish. 924 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan
POSH BOUTIQUE:
THE SHIRT SHOP:
Posh is the place you go to when you need a break from all the bright Spandex baking in the sun. Here you will find a limited number of dresses, rompers, tops and bottoms in neutral shades and soft fabrics. Think muted and modern. 114 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan
TWISTED FINE YARN & WOOL:
RIVERWALK BOOKS:
WILLOW:

On the first floor, you will find the newest titles on the publishing list while the second floor is a dream for book-loving children. Be sure to ask the knowledgeable staff for their suggestions. 116 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan
After entering Willow, you may want owner Robyn Skaar to be your personal home decorator. White walls and furniture come alive with green blooms, luxe cosmetics and vintage decorations sprinkled atop. They carry apparel too. 119 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan
SPIRALS:
All your quilting and sewing supplies, spare for the machines, in one cozy store. Find both cotton and jersey knits. 136 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan
Take the positive energy from your vacation back home through merchandise meant for healing and spirituality. Products include jewelry, inspirational figurines and Himalayan salt lamps, to name a few. The staff is happy to explain how it all works, and they hold wellness clases as well. 215 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan
