hether you’re a cider connoisseur or just curious about how it’s made, Washington Gold Cider is opening their doors for guests to tour the main production facility while sipping on their four current selections. Washington Gold Cider’s Jonny Kludt gives some insight into the company’s past, present, and future.

WELCOME TO THE CIDER HOUSE What started as a 1930s apple packing shed was renovated into the Cider House, made to press, ferment, blend, and bottle each Washington Gold Cider. The company opened their doors to the public last year to give people a better sense of how the drinks are made.
Beautiful THINGS for everyday LIVING
Kludt says that the tastings and tours are the perfect getaways on typical Chelan days. “The rustic warehouse with modern cooled cider tanks gives guests a great escape from the summer heat while enjoying fresh, refreshing cider.” The facility boasts five of these cider tanks, each holding 5,800 gallons of premium cider. “It’s all about location,” Kludt said. “People get a chance to sample ciders in the very building they’re made, surrounded by cider tanks. Our staff knows their stuff. They’re passionate about craft cider, which is contagious, so each guest leaves feeling like they’re part of the family. It’s a great place for families to enjoy a break from the other activities the town has to offer.”

INSIDE STORY industries and we’re excited to be a part of this movement.” HAVE A TASTE! If you’re looking for more details on each of the four current flavors, Kludt has you covered. Original, their Flagship cider, is a “smooth orchard blend of Fuji, Gala, and Granny Smith apples.” It won a silver medal for “Best Cider” at the San Diego International Beer Competition in 2016. A TOUR BEING HELD AT THE PRODUCTION FACILITY
TRULY AUTHENTIC Not only is the experience unique, but the ciders are too. Each drink is made with 100% hand-picked Washington apples. Plus, they’re free of artificial colors and flavors, as well as gluten. “We pride ourselves on quality over quantity, fresh pressed fruit for our cider instead of syrup and concentrate,” Kludt added. “This commitment to authenticity makes us an industry leader in flavor and quality.” The company has more than 40 years of cider experience, making what they offer hard to beat. The four varieties currently offered are Original, Lake Chelan Heritage, Golden Delicious, and Cherry. “Our goal is to keep the cider simple, authentic and full of fresh fruit flavor,” Kludt said. THE BIGGER PICTURE The brand’s commitment to quality and authenticity make their ciders a rarity – a must-see when visiting the area. This strive for greatness continues to make Washington Gold Cider more and more popular. Later this year, Washington Gold Cider will expand their selection by releasing a seasonal Raspberry cider. Kegs have been instrumental in their growth, and the company’s products are currently available in over 650 stores spread across Southern California. Kludt says that “cans are quickly becoming a major trend-gaining momentum in the craft beer and cider
As for Golden Delicious, which recently earned a silver medal for “Best Cider” at the 2017 San Diego International Beer Competition, it’s “bright and crisp, crafted using strictly fresh-pressed Golden Delicious apples straight from our orchards in from Central Washington.” Lake Chelan Heritage, their traditional noncarbonated drink, is “bursting with fresh apple character and provides an alternative way for consumers to enjoy cider.” And lastly, their fresh-pressed Cherry “features a blend of hand-picked Sweetheart Cherries and local Gala apples, both of which are very hard to find in a modernized world of concentrates and additives.” The best way to try these ciders would be to visit the Cider House at Lake Chelan Winery, open for tastings Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. See where the magic happens at 3519 Highway 150, Chelan.

MEET THE CIDERS ORIGINAL Pale golden with sparkling clarity and bright flavors, this semi-sweet cider is made from 100% fresh-pressed Washington apples. Subtle floral notes combine with a hint of vanilla bean and ripe apple, awakening memories of a fall day in the orchard.
LAKE LAKE CHELAN CHELAN
HERITAGE Apple character is preserved beautifully on the palate with an understated intensity clearly marking it as fresh pressed juice. Light tannin, reminiscent of apple skin, creates a subtle complexity. A long, clean finish and a lingering tartness makes for easy drinking. The crisp acidity is well balanced with a modest residual sugar content.
GOLDEN DELICIOUS Bright and crisp with a touch of golden sweetness, the Golden Delicious Cider is the first flavor Washington Gold Cider has offered in 12 ounce cans. Let yourself be transported back to a time when classic apple varieties dotted the orchards and crisp, sweet apples were the afternoon snack of choice.
CHERRY CHERRY Upon opening, the sturdy scent of freshly-picked autumn apples wafts up with confidence, hitting the nose with the warm familiarity of brightly colored leaves and crisp fall air. The cherry runs like red satin down the throat—smooth and uninterrupted. The semi-sweet, sugar-kissed apple flavor hits first, and then transitions and finishes dry as it reveals a hint of tart, ripe cherry. BOTTLED CIDER READY TO BE ENJOYED

BOOKS See What I Have Done - Sarah Schmidt See What I Have Done is a spellbinding historic reimagining of a Gothic tale many of us grew up knowing about. Schmidt brings to life all the characters in Lizzie Borden’s world and takes the reader on an adventure through time and the investigation of her parent’s murder. It is a suspenseful and satisfying read.

August Releases RECOMMENDATIONS COURTESY OF
RIVERWALK BOOKS All recommendations are from the books’ descriptions unless stated otherwise
Fierce Kingdom: A Novel - Gin Phillips Joan and her four-year-old son, Lincoln, are just about to conclude a day at the zoo when Joan notices an unnatural stillness and a lack of other people. She hears sounds, loud popping noises, and cannot quite determine what they might be. Then she notices the bodies. How quickly life shifts from a dream to a nightmare.
Reading with Patrick: A Teacher, a Student, and a Life-Changing Friendship Michelle Kuo Reading with Patrick is an inspirational story of friendship, coming-of-age story of both a young teacher and a student, a resonant meditation on education, race, and justice in the rural South, and a love letter to literature and its power to transcend social barriers.
The Almost Sisters: A Novel - Joshilyn Jackson Leia Birch is pretty much a rock star in the comic world, but her personal life has taken over the drama of her heroines, Violet and Violence. Leia is pregnant with a bi-racial child after too much tequila and a one-night stand at ComicCon, her sister’s perfect marriage is imploding, and it appears her sweet, proper Southern grandmother has been hiding all kinds of improper things, including advancing dementia. As always, Jackson is witty and charming and her characters are so wonderfully drawn. The Almost Sisters is a hopeful book about our ability to preserve the dignity of one another while still helping them grow and change.

Environmentally Friendly biking tours in lake chelan While many visitors may be satisfied gazing through their thick, glass car windows at the valley’s attractions, Chelan Electric Bikes encourages people to ditch that idea entirely. Rather than a self-guided, stuck-in-a-car tour, this company wants you experiencing Chelan in a completely different way: on electric bicycles.

KELLI SCOTT LAKE CHELAN THIS WEEK
Let’s say you and the family are visiting Lake Chelan for a week of bonding and relaxation. Swimming, boating and hiking have been fantastic fun (and you have the Instagram pics to prove it), but it’s been a long week and it’s time for something new. What now? Here are a bunch of family friendly activities to suggest any time you hear those three dreaded words: “Mom, we’re bored.” — Theater Under the Stars puts on family friendly plays that spoof popular culture, like “twi-lite” and “The Miserable Phantom of the Op’ry.” These are perfect shows for families with older kids. (Just two more weekends left!) Adjacent to 203 Bighorn Way, Chelan, 888-473-7869, theaterunderthestars.org. — Slidewaters has been a local favorite since 1983, and it’s easy to see why. The waterpark features shallow splash areas for the tiniest tots, intermediate slides for those adventurous pre-schoolers, and tons of longer, faster slides for the thrillseekers in the family. 102 Waterslide Drive, Chelan, 682-5751, slidewaterswaterpark.com.
— Riverwalk Books is a gem of a local book shop. They’ve got a well-stocked young reader section and a knowledgeable and friendly staff. Tell the kids that screen time is over for the rest of the week. Then buy them a book. 116 East Woodin Ave., Chelan, 682-8901, riverwalkbooks.com.
Chelan Electric Bikes offers tours that not only show you around the area, but also teach you some history and make you laugh as well. Their tour guides have a reputation for being hilarious, and the company has a reputation for being one of the best winery tours in the region. The owners put an emphasis on seeing Chelan through fresh air, in an environmentally friendlier way than via car. They want their customers to take in the beauty with clear visions, to smell the fresh air, and taste the carefully
crafted wine. And there’s no need to worry about getting tired, thanks to the electric half of the bike. Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or you’ve lived in Chelan for years, Chelan Electric Bikes claims that everyone will get something out of this experience. Their website claims that, “locals can learn something new about their hometown, whether it is a new landmark or a new route. Our tours are also great for locals with out-of-town visitors who want to see the sites. This is a unique and thrilling opportunity that will leave your guests thanking you for taking them on this amazing ride.” If you’re interested in taking one of their three different tours, visit chelanelectricbikes.com to make reservations. And, if you’re booking a trip on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, use the code “earlyweek” for a discount.

— Get out of the sun and into an air conditioned movie theater. “Suicide Squad” opens this weekend at downtown Chelan’s historic Ruby Theatre. 135 E. Woodin Ave., Chelan, 682-5016, rubytheatre.com. — Stroll through the Chelan Farmers Market, Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. at Riverwalk Park. Or the Manson Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Manson Grange, 157 E. Wapato Way, Manson. — The Chelan Museum is always free. 204 E. Woodin Ave., 682-5644, chelanmuseum.com. While you’re out making memories in the Chelan Valley this summer, throw #itsyourlake on any of your social media posts and we will share them on Lake Chelan This Week’s Instagram feed and in print.
