Peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, cheese and wine. Some things are just meant to be. It’s no wonder wineries in New Zealand and Australia pair their wines with homemade cheeses in-store. Timi Starkweather wrote the business plan for her Manson shop in 2008 after researching wineries in both areas. She noticed that every winery had a creamery and thought a creamery might be a great fit for Manson. “At that time this area was just starting to grow, Starkweather said. “I thought ‘Hey, this is a great ag area. Why don’t we have one of those?’ When it came to naming her creation, Starkweather said she took the first half of the word “fromage, which means cheese in French, and paired it with the second half of the Italian word for cheese, which is “formaggio. Thus, Fromaggio was born. “It means cheese in any language, Starkweather said. Fromaggio began selling cheese in 2009, but the creamery — a

longtime goal for Starkweather — didn’t become a reality until spring of 2013. Now Starkweather, her partners and her staff produce seven different styles of cheese and 24 different flavors of ice cream, gelato and sorbet, all of which are made from organic milk. All of the cows that produce Fromaggio’s milk are 100 percent grass-fed. At the Granger farm where Fromaggio’s milk comes from, cows eat what Starkweather describes as a kind of “salad bar. These cows live to be about 15 years old, whereas most dairy cows live four to five years. But going organic wasn’t easy: Starkweather contacted Darigold looking for a list of local, organic farms, but Darigold declined to name individual farms. After some searching, however, she found a suitable farm with the help of a friend. For Starkweather, making their food from organic milk was a “no-brainer because it doesn’t have the antibiotics or additives that a lot of other milks contain. As

a mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother, Starkweather believes it is important to reduce the amount of sugar in foods. “We want our kids to be healthy, she said. “We make everything from scratch. We want to be responsible to our citizens and to our kids. Starkweather has been cooking since she was 4 years old and before opening her business, had a radio show called “Adventures in Cooking on KOZI in Chelan. “It’s all about a community experience, Starkweather said. “Working with the schools and creating internship programs for students is really a passion for me. Fromaggio will have its first internship program this fall where students will learn cooking and business skills. “It’s about the people, Starkweather said. “I love people, I love teaching, and I love families. Fromaggio is very much about families. Aside from the creamery and cheese island, Fromaggio also has a bistro that serves wine, beer, and assorted dishes for lunch and dinner. Foothills Wine Awards A number of Chelan wineries will be present at the gala this weekend Photo by Kathryn Stevens

By Rick Steigmeyer For The Wenatchee World

The Fourth Annual North Central Washington Wine Awards is coming right up and this is one wine and food social event you don’t want to miss. All the drinking, eating and schmoozing happens from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee. The event was held at the center last year with great response from more than 300 people attending. This year’s event includes wines from 30 regional wineries, all of them award winners. A panel of professional judges awarded a record number of Gold and Double Gold medals this year during blind tastings held last June. The results will be revealed this Saturday. Full results and stories about top winners will also be published in the September-October issue of Foothills magazine. The issue of the magazine will be distributed statewide to promote the region’s growing wine industry. Nearly 250 wines from 37 wineries were entered in the competition. Judges experienced from previous NCW Wine Awards agreed that local wines have vastly improved over the past four years. Nearly 20 percent of wines entered received Gold or Double Gold medals — 58 wines — more than

Cabernet Franc awaits the judges at the NCW Wine Awards. twice as many as in previous years. Ten Double Gold medals were awarded this year. Last year, there were only two. Ken Robertson, a retired newspaper editor and longtime wine columnist from the Tri-Cities area said the first year he judged here there

were a few wineries making great wines and many others working to improve. Now, it’s clear, he said, that the entire industry has elevated their craft. Andy Perdue, wine writer for the Seattle Times, coordinated the NCW competition with Eric Degerman. The two Richland writers created and publish Great Northwest Wines, a wine news company that also organizes wine competitions throughout the Northwest. “We probably gave out twice the number of gold medals as we did here last year,” Perdue said. The Great Northwest competitions don’t give out gold and double gold awards willy-nilly. The emphasis will be on fun rather than competition Saturday evening. Besides lots of great wine, there will be hard ciders, beers and ales and hand-crafted distilled spirits to try. A dozen eateries will be on hand to serve a truly diverse selection of foods ranging from sushi to gyros, from Italian to East Indian. There will be information booths about wine and wine education. The Confluence Jazz Trio will provide the night’s upbeat themes. Wines can be purchased to take home after the event. Profits will benefit the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center. For more information or to buy advance tickets online, go to ncwwineawards.com. Tickets can also be bought at the door for $40 per person.

Special event: Rio Vista Benefit Concert In light of the recent fires that took many homes in the surrounding areas, communities from around Washington have shown an outpouring of support for families affected by the fires. Rio Vista is lending a hand by hosting a benefit to help their neighbors. We think that’s awesome, and if you do too, here’s everything you need to know to get involved. What: Rio Vista Winery Benefit Concert The benefit concert is much more than just a concert, with plenty to do and plenty of ways to donate. The band Crisis will provide the soundtrack to the afternoon. The fires were especially hard on Crisis’ lead singer, who lost his home in Alta Lake. There will be no cover for the show, but a $5 donation is encouraged. Throughout the afternoon a silent auction will be held. Bidders can win everything from dinners, golf packages and winery tours to a truckload of top soil delivered to their garden. Here’s the best part: 20 percent of wine sales, 50 percent of dinner sales and 100 percent of auction sales will go to fire relief and aid.

When: From 3 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23. Where: 24415 Highway 97, Chelan Cost: Free, with a $5 suggested donation for the show and silent auction. Catered dinner is $10. For more information: Call 509-682-9713 or visit riovistawines.com
