PUBLICATION WRITER & DESIGNER RYLIE SWEEM
Rootwood Cider was started in 2015 by a fifth generation apple-farming family living in Chelan. Cheryl Koenig from Rootwood says that the family decided to get into the cider business as a way to “diversify our operation and bring the next generation into the family business.” Since then, the family have produced a plethora of ciders that are loved by the Chelan Valley.
Koenig said that there are two main things that make Rootwood unique. First, the fact that it’s a family owned business. “Our three daughters and their husbands are all involved in all aspects,” she said. Second, the ciders are made with a blend of local, dessert-style apples and juices of cider apples originally from eastern Europe and Britain. Koenig said that these apple varieties give the ciders more complex flavor profiles. She added that Rootwood’s ciders are a “light and refreshing beverage that reflects the character of the apples grown in the Lake Chelan Valley.” Each cider is produced in small and unique quantities, prompting visitors to taste them all.

INSIDE STORY
Rootwood’s tasting room in downtown Manson offers five ciders on tap, plus small bites. At their production facility at the orchard a variety of things happen: fermenting, blending, bottling, labeling, and more. And in the early fall another tasting room will open inside the production facility. The company also hosts events throughout the summer, including concerts and guided, educational orchard tours. Looking back on the past two years, Koenig says it’s been “quite an adventure and learning experience for everyone in the family.” “The
popularity of hard cider has allowed us to meet many interesting people in the hard cider industry, participate in events, travel, share cider with others and continue to produce high quality, unique ciders,” she added. Moving forward, Koenig says that the company hopes to expand their quantity of ciders and distribution area. If you’d like to celebrate their anniversary, Rootwood invites you to their celebration on Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. at 45 Wapato Way in Manson. The event also comes with $5 brats, music from DJ Doug, and special treats from Rootwood.

he annual Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Wenatchee Town Toyota Center. Ticket holders will enjoy food from a wide variety of local restaurants and caterers as well as cider, craft breweries, distilleries, and, of course, great wine.

Visitors will take home their own commemorative wine glass, as well as the opportunity to purchase their favorite local wines to help support the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center.
Along with the festival is a wine competition. A panel of industry experts determined which wines produced in the region are the best during judging, which took place on June 7, and the competition winners will be announced at the festival. Some of this year’s judges include Dan Carr, co-owner of Visconti’s Italian restaurants, Richard Larsen, research winemaker for Washington State University, and Ellen Landis, certified sommelier, wine writer, and wine educator.

s August comes to an end, so does blueberry U-Picking at Blueberry Hills Farms. However, if you thought u-pick was over, you’re way wrong. The farm is still packed with strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, all waiting to be picked and taken home. Blueberry Hills owner Kari Sorensen welcomes both locals and visitors to grab a bucket, stroll through over 13 acres of fruit, and pick away. Each of these last three berries will be available until late fall. This farm and restaurant has been a huge hit over the years, and is a must-see when in Manson. Though it’s now known for its blueberries, it hasn’t always been a berry farm.
The land was first used for apple farming by Sorensen’s great-greatgrandparents, and was kept up by later generations over the years. After years of harsh apple seasons, Sorensen’s family pulled the apple trees in 2000 and planted 13,000 blueberry plants, beginning a new legacy. Blueberry Hills Farms not only has a delicious menu and energetic staff, but loads of history, making it a well-known attraction. If you want to participate in U-Pick, stop by Blueberry Hills Farms at 1315 Washington St. in Manson any day between 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. To learn more about the farm visit wildaboutberries.com.
How many did you get right? Check your answers on page 14.

WATERDOGS AT WOODSTOCK
On Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. the Chelan-famous Woodstock Concert will begin. Lake Chelan This Week talked to two members of Waterdog, the band that will be playing at Woodstock, in preparation for the event.

LCTW: When did your passion for music start? GW: Growing up in a Pentecostal church I can never remember music not being a big part of my life.
“Love Shack”. LCTW: Outside of the band, what are your other interests? GW: These days, it is kids. In addition to 5 biological kids, who are all adults, my wife and I have adopted two, are in the process of adopting a third and currently fostering two others. It is such hard work, but so worth it!
LCTW: How did you become a part of Waterdog? GW: I was asked to be part a group put together for a fundraiser of Habitat for Humanity and people really liked us. It has just grown from there. LCTW: What’s your favorite Waterdog hit to perform? GW: I can’t narrow it down to just one, but I love seeing the crowd get into it when we play songs like “Wooly Bully” or
LCTW: What are you looking forward to for this year’s Woodstock? GW: Having a great time sharing some really fun music and raising money to help families in the community who are in need.
MEET STEVE: Steve Barone
Guitarist, singer
LCTW: When did your passion for music start? SB: When I was 5 years old, I fell in love with music watching my Dad perform with his group. LCTW: How did you become a part of Waterdog? SB: I was the last remaining original member of the longtime Wenatchee Valley favorites The Chargers. Two years ago, after retiring that group, I wanted to take some time off, but that only lasted a few weeks until Waterdog came calling to round out their classic rock line up and it was a perfect fit. LCTW: What’s your favorite Waterdog hit to perform? SB: That is like asking “who is your
