JAM WITH FOUR LAKES This annual blues concert held at the Winery is coming up again on Saturday, Sept. 2 from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. This year’s set list includes the Jeff Paige Band, special guest Paul Cowie, and blues enthusiasts from the audience for an open jam. Pyle says the open jam is “something you don’t experience very often at music events.” The winery encourages musicians of

all ranges to come up and jam together. “It is really cool to listen to musicians who have never played together collaborate while playing freestyle with each other,” Pyle said. The blues fest was created after Karl Koester, the owner of Four Lakes, and Jeff Paige had been playing music together in their spare time for years. “Together, with their interest in blues music and love for playing it they decided it would be a good idea to try having a Blues Fest here at the tasting room,” the Tasting Room manager said. Pyle says that Blues Fest is a hit for all. “Blues music is something that everyone can enjoy. You see people of all ages from kids on up on the dance floor moving and grooving.”

INSIDE STORY FROM THE GROUND UP Koester is Four Lakes’s wine-maker, vineyard manager, irrigation expert, tractor mechanic, and, as described by Pyle, an “all-around badass.” He owned a general contracting company for five years before dropping it all and building his winery. His wines started in Seattle in 2002 and made their way to the Chelan Valley in 2004 with newly planted vineyards. Four Lakes began building their winery and production began with the completion of their new facility in 2006. The tasting room opened soon after in 2009.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Girl’s Got Rhythm (75 percent Orange Muscat and 25 percent Gewürztraminer blend that is fermented to dryness). Pyle says that there’s a wine for everyone’s unique palate, something that will suit everyone.

Now, Four Lakes is a local and visitor favorite with over 18 years of wine experience. Their wine is made with 100 percent estategrown grapes and have 100 percent in-house production, bottling, and labeling. Their tasting room features a laidback atmosphere and a wrap-around deck that allows customers to take in the unbelieveable views while sipping on award-winning Jeff Paige and Karl Koester wines.
She says that visiting the winery should be at the top of visitors’ lists when in the area. “We have a completely unique jamming at last year’s tasting room Blues Fest Pyle suggests experience to offer that visitors try all of their wines, to both the residences and visitors in however, the winery is known for their the Chelan Valley. TO TOP IT OFF Pyle explains how their wines go beyond the everyday glass. “We have a great growing region here in the Chelan Valley. The Chelan AVA is distinguished by the “lake effect” which creates mild and favorable temperatures and allows for a longer growing season. Our soil also has its own unique characteristics because of the glaciers that once formed in Lake Chelan and gives the grapes grown in this area their own distinct attributes.”

Lake Chelan This Week
ENTERTAINMENT The original business has been passed down through the generations of family members, first run by Cragg and Roberta Courtney after Ray passed away in 1982 and then sold to Nancy Davis and Colter Courtney in 2015. Davis’s background includes growing up in the small town of Middlebury, Vermont and starting riding lessons at the tender age of four. What started as an infatuation turned into a lifetime career as Davis made her way through 4-H, horse summer camp programs, and into college where she graduated Nancy Davis out after four years tour with a degree in Equestrian Studies with a focus on training and instruction.
T
ucked away in the North Cascades is the gem that is Stehekin. This Lake Chelan getaway can only be reached by plane or boat and boasts beautiful forests, a small, welcoming community, and more to do than you might think. While most might hike or bike to get around, Stehekin Outfitters offers a truly unique way to get to know the area: horseback tours. After you reserve either a half day tour or a full day tour you’ll meet at the corral with a Stehekin Outfitters wrangler and get introduced to your horse. The staff will go over general riding style and tips for controlling your horse and then you’re off! While riding, you’ll see gorgeous views of Angus Mountain and glacier, as well as Coon Lake for both half and full day tours, and Bridge Creek for full day tour riders. Once you reach your destination you’ll have time to explore the depths of Stehekin, an uncommon experience for
many travelling to the Chelan area. Day long riders will enjoy a tasty lunch from the Stehekin Pastry Company. Then each tour will turn around for the second half of the journey. Stehekin Outfitters co-owner Nancy Davis says that their programs are “unique in the sense that the company has used mostly Norwegian Fjord horses to carry their guests and gear into the backcountry of the North Cascades Mountains. This breed is sturdy, safe and an incredibly sure-footed mountain horse that enjoys their job just as much as the workers do.” Prior riding experience is not necessary to take a day ride on one of these horses. If you’re looking for a truly unique way to see the more remote parts of Washington, this is it. As Davis said, “Life is an adventure and trips of this nature are sure to provide memorable experiences.”

She then spent the first two years after college teaching English and riding and jumping lessons at Hunter Farms just outside of Princeton, New Jersey. Needing to spread her wings, she relocated to Sun Valley, Idaho, and then eventually into the much smaller valley of Stehekin, Washington.
Riding and guiding for Stehekin Outfitters has been an amazing turn of events for Davis. She started a full time summer career in 2012 guiding guests on daily trail rides, teaching lessons, or taking overnight camping trips. Through the years, many memorable moments have been made during trips. Davis recalls, “Leading trips of this nature, our packers, guides, and riders could write a book on their experiences out in the woods. Working with animals means there is hardly a dull moment. We’ve had trips when the horses have been turned out to graze and decided to sneak around camp and head for home, making the wranglers hike up to 26 miles to retrieve them from their on a horseback home corrals. Our repertoire of stories include following a bear down the trail and then trying to sneak past a bees nest he recently raided. Trips have woken up to several inches of snow in a surprise midsummer storm or clearing out trail after a thunderstorm knocked trees down during the night.” For more information on Stehekin Outfitters and to schedule a tour, visit stehekinoutfitters.com.
BOOKS THE FORTUNES Peter Ho Davies The Fortunes crafts four tales that speak of the broader history of Chinese immigrants in the United States, from the hardworking valet who serves a white railroad mogul to Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American movie star. Through these elegant, deeply embodied stories, Davies portrays the uneasy relationship between these people and their new country.

End of Summer Reads RECOMMENDATIONS COURTESY OF
RIVERWALK BOOKS All recommendations are from the books’ descriptions unless stated otherwise
MY ABSOLUTE DARLING - Gabriel Tallent Turtle Alveston has grown up isolated since the death of her mother, in the thrall of her tortured and charismatic father, Martin. Her social existence is confined to the middle school (where she fends off the interest of anyone, student or teacher, who might penetrate her shell) and to her life with her father. Then Turtle meets Jacob, a high school boy who tells jokes, lives in a big clean house, and looks at Turtle as if she is the sunrise. And for the first time, the larger world begins to come into focus: her life with Martin is neither safe nor sustainable.
YOUNG JANE YOUNG - Gabrielle Zevin Aviva Grossman [is] an ambitious Congressional intern in Florida who makes the life-changing mistake of having an affair with her boss, who is beloved, admired, successful, and very married - and blogging about it. When the affair comes to light, the Congressman doesn’t take the fall, but Aviva does, and her life is over before it hardly begins. She becomes a late night talk show punchline; she is slut-shamed, labeled as fat and ugly, and considered a blight on politics in general. How does one go on after this? In Aviva’s case, she sees no way out but to change her name and move to a remote town in Maine.

Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.
THE OTHER ALCOTT - Elise Hooper The Other Alcott is an imaginative look at May - the youngest sister of Louisa May Alcott - and the relationship between the two siblings. While Louisa’s art was created with words, May was a visual artist who hadn’t yet hit her stride with painting when Louisa gained fame as the author of Little Women. Readers will be captivated by May’s adventures from Concord to Boston and beyond, to Europe, as she grows her talent and is recognized for the artist and the woman - independent of her sister - that she is.
