in the Chelan Valley By Carol Salazar
Lake Chelan This Week Chelan and Manson are best known as summer destination spots. Who doesn’t love being on the water on a hot August day? But autumn — when the weather cools and the hordes of tourists go home — can be a wonderful time to visit the lake. It’s the season of gorgeous hikes through fall colors, checking out the landscape from a seaplane tour, and spending evenings in cozy pubs listening to live music with a glass of wine in hand. Here are a few of our favorite things to do around Lake Chelan in the fall:

We all know the Chelan Valley produces some of the world’s best wine. There are plenty of vineyards that stretch for acres and across hills and many are open year-round. In the fall, you will have a better opportunity to see the harvest. With over 30 wineries in Chelan and Manson, there is plenty of wine tasting to go around. As Olivia Plew of the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce said: “There is nothing better [in Chelan] than to go wine tasting with friends.” While you and your friends are hopping between tasting rooms, you’ll have the chance to tour wineries and learn about the craftsmanship that goes into each glass. Many wineries give visitors the opportunity to see the process of wine making up close and
personal. Head out into the fields for the harvest, stomp along during the crushing process, and learn all about fermentation. After the tour, enjoy a taste of one of the finest wines from that winery. For a full list of area wineries and tour information, check out lakechelanwinevalley.com. Aside from the wine tasting culture, the valley also offers hard ciders and breweries. Washington Gold Cider, Hard Row to Hoe Vineyard, and Rootwood Cider are just a few of the places that offer hard cider you’ll want to try.
The Great Outdoors Some of the most popular hiking trails in the Chelan Valley are easily
accessible. The Little Bear Trail is always popular. At just over two miles long, this short hiking trail will allow you to view the valley and all its fall colors. (Check out wta.org for information about the Little Bear Trail and more hike suggestions.) The Chelan Riverwalk Park is also a good option for spotting the season’s reds and golds. The park features a trail that stretches for three miles and runs right behind downtown. It’s an easy hike that takes you all the way to the Chelan River. Much of the trail is paved. For a grander view of the valley, you might consider a seaplane tour. Chelan Seaplanes offers a couple different tour options. On the seaplane winery

indoors this fall, there are several cafes to check out while you escape the cooler weather. The Vogue on Woodin Avenue in downtown Chelan is one of the very best. By day, The Vogue is a good place to warm up with a cup of coffee and new book from Riverwalk Books, which is just across the street. By night, it’s a lively bar. Owner Mike Cooney is a huge proponent of local, live music. Every weekend night, Cooney brings bands into The Vogue for shows where the cost is always free, but donations are encouraged.

It’s a round-trip flight that takes only 40 minutes total, not including your hour-long wine tasting. Alternatively, you could take a Chelan Seaplanes tour up to the beautiful little town of Stehekin at the top of the lake, where you’ll find plenty of opportunities to press your very own cider and enjoy the gorgeous views of waterfalls and wildlife.
Coffee and Music For those of you who prefer to stay

Did You Ever Have a Family By Bill Clegg
Circling the Sun By Paula McLain
“It has been some time since a book has affected me quite the way this novel has. I was struck by the authentic portrayal of characters that moved beyond the pages and made me see human beings in a whole new way. A tragedy of great proportion sets in motion an unraveling of lives, an examination of what people hold dear, and a recognition of how relationships with those closest are the most important facets of life. I really lived with these characters for the brief time I was reading this book. The writing is beautiful and the mystery at the heart of the book will keep readers riveted. — Jenny Lyons, The Vermont Bookshop, Middlebury, VT
“Reading Circling the Sun reminded me of the deep pleasure of solid storytelling: the vast landscape of colonial Kenya, complicated and compelling historical characters, love, suffering and adventure combine to create a captivating narrative. McLain imagines the African childhood and early adulthood of real-life horse trainer and pioneering female aviator, Beryl Markham, as well as her social milieu which included Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who, as Isak Dinesen, wrote Out of Africa. Markham lived a fascinating and uncompromising life filled with danger, ill-fated romance, and stunning bravery, and McLain does justice to her memory with this sensitive and beautifully written portrayal.” — Rhianna Walton, Powell’s Books, Portland, OR
How to Start a Fire By Lisa Lutz
Seveneves By Neal Stephenson
“How to Start a Fire integrates Lutz’s trademark humor, quippy dialog, and quirky characters with a story of three college friends who meet in Santa Cruz in 1993. Readers will fall in love with these three women as they experience failed marriages, career decisions, and other significant life events. Those who are new to Lutz will gobble up this standalone entry and then race to their bookstore to begin reading about the Spellman family in her earlier bestselling series.” — Terry Gilman, Mysterious Galaxy, San Diego
“In this exciting and cerebral epic spanning 5,000 years,

“Inspired by a family trip in a covered wagon in the 1950s, Rinker Buck and his brother Nick set out by wagon to discover what remains of the Oregon Trail between Missouri and Oregon. Along the way, readers learn about wagon design, mule heritage and what pioneers needed to endure traveling west in the 19th century. This is also a moving personal story of brotherhood, endurance, and the kindness of strangers. — Dick Hermans, Oblong Books & Music, Millerton, NY

Oregon Trail: A New American Journey By Rinker Buck
Stephenson explores the effects of a devastating catastrophe on the course of humanity. After the moon is shattered by an unknown agent, small groups of humans survive the ensuing holocaust—some by digging deep underground, others by seeking refuge in space. Millennia later, the separate branches of mankind converge, inexorably changed. I was completely consumed by this book, terrified and awed by Stephenson’s vision of our future. This is essential science fiction.” —Emily Ring, Inklings Bookshop, Yakima
