Wenatchee: A great base for exploring

9

W

enatchee — the Apple Capital of the World — is a commercial, shopping, hotel, entertainment and dining center midway between Seattle and Spokane. The metro Wenatchee area spans the Columbia River and is a great base for exploring in town or North Central Washington, orchards, Leavenworth, 22 miles west, celebrates Bavarian architecture, music and culture. Cashmere, 12 miles west, boasts eclectic shopping districts and is home to world-famous Aplets and Cotlets. Lake Chelan, 45 miles north, offers sun and water sports along the shores of the 55-milelong Lake Chelan. Along with Leavenworth, it is a white-water magnet for river-runners.

ide the (mini) rails. Wenatchee Riverfront Railway is in Riverfront Park on the Columbia River. The diminutive railway has a cute little train station. First Fridays. Wenatchee First Fridays Arts Walk is a great way to stroll through downtown Wenatchee checking out the work of artists in shops, galleries and restaurants. Swim the Columbia River. Wenatchee’s Walla Walla Point Park and Confluence State Park both have float-lined areas with beaches (but no lifeguards). Playgrounds, restrooms and water. Both are on the Loop Trail. Hike Mission Ridge to the Bomber Bowl. The Bomber Bowl is one of the most popular runs at

Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort and gets its name from the 1944 crash of a B-24 bomber. It crashed about 500 feet below the summit, killing all six crewmen. A monument was created from a wing of the plane. Picnic at Ohme. Grab a blanket and a picnic and head to Ohme Garden, an alpine retreat overlooking the Columbia River on the north edge of Wenatchee. You’ll find paths, lots of shade from high-country trees transplanted to the scenic spot. The ridgetop oasis, maturing for more than 80 years into an alpine wonderland, offers multiple water features — ponds, streams, waterfalls — surrounded by towering firs and cedars.

All aboard! The Wenatchee Riverfront Railway is a fun place to spend a sunny afternoon in Riverfront Park. Find the railway on Facebook: @WRRyWA

Pybus Public Market pybuspublicmarket.org

P

ybus Public Market has a great location on the west bank of the Columbia River near downtown Wenatchee and right on the paved 11-mile Apple Capital Loop Trail. Eat and shop at the market’s many stores and restaurants, morning and night. And it’s a community meeting place, packed on the weekends with art shows, and fundraisers. Walk or bike the Loop Trail which runs right by the market.

It’s the best bike trail in Central Washington. Head north (past the Market osprey nest on a tall pole) and check out parks and public art and the mighty Columbia River. Or rent a bike and do the whole loop. It’ll take you about an hour. Check out historic downtown Wenatchee. You’ll find lots of restaurants, pubs, quirky and cool shops, public sculptures, the Numerica Performing Arts Center and the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center.

What they said “The building is breathtaking, the local farmers, restaurants and artisanal food producers it hosts are uniformly superb, and its location on the banks of the Columbia River is stunning.” — Seattle Refined/Komo

The Pybus Market has far more to offer than a location to buy your weekly supply of groceries. It is a historical destination where you can

If you come to Wenatchee, you can’t miss the market with its fire engine red sign, “Public Market,” and flags flying at the entrance. PRESENTS

wwrld.us/loopmap

T

he Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail — or just the Loop: 11 miles of paved path along the Columbia River through parks and over three bridges. The views are just beautiful. It is the Wenatchee Valley’s best-loved trail.

Pick your path Shade and green grass. Wenatchee side of the trail. Shrub-steppe with a great view of the Cascade Mountains. East side near the Odabashian Bridge (Highway 2/97).

History The pipeline Pedestrian Bridge was built in 1908 and was the first bridge to span the Columbia River. Trees shade the trail near the bridge’s east end and Hale Park’s off-leash dog park is on the west end.

Fish The pedestrian bridge over the Wenatchee River gives you a chance to see migrating salmon headed upstream to spawn. It’s a few steps from Confluence State Park.

APRIL 13, 2019 TOWN TOYOTA CENTER

Keep riding Two more paved paths connect to the Loop: 2.2 miles down the Columbia River to Hydro Park and 5.5 miles up the Columbia to Lincoln Rock State Park and a great view of Rocky Reach Dam.

idway between Wenatchee and Lake Chelan, Entiat sits at the confluence of the Columbia and Entiat rivers on Highway 97A. Entiat Park is a fine place to stop for an hour or a weekend. It has playground equipment, camping for RVs and tents, a boat launch, and the Entiaqua Trail along the rivers. The Entiat River Valley is lined by orchards and offers two great stops: Entiat National Fish Hatchery and Silver Falls, a favorite getaway spot. The tiny town of Ardenvoir hosts the annual Swallow Festival on the second Saturday in April to celebrate the return of the swallows. Check out Columbia Breaks Fire Interpretive Center on the north side of Entiat. It educates the public about wildland fires and includes former fire lookouts and an interpretive trail. There’s a memorial walk honoring every firefighter who died fighting wildfire in North Central Washington. columbiabreakswildfire.com.

If you’ve never had gelato, you’re in for a real treat! The word means frozen, and like ice cream, gelato is made from milk and served in a dish or cone. Whitewater rafting Wenatchee River T

World photo/Mike Bonnicksen

Rafters make their way through whitewater on the Wenatchee River just upstream from Cashmere.

he Wenatchee River between Leavenworth and Cashmere is “one of the most popular whitewater runs in the state,” wenatcheeoutdoors.org says. “Why? Lots of sunshine during the spring melt-off (unlike West Side rivers), warmer temperatures, quick shuttling, easy access to and exit from the river, loads of Class 2 and 3 rapids to keep things entertaining, pools after most drops to pick up

any wreckage, and scenic views of the Wenatchee Valley orchards.” There are many professional rafting companies that run the river all spring long, feed you and bus you back to where you started. Check outdoors stores and local listings in Wenatchee and upper Wenatchee Valley communities, including the Leavenworth area. More than a dozen companies run the river every year.

“A burgeoning winery scene has brought a Pinotand-brie refinement to the brats-and-brews style of this Bavarian-inspired village, just east of the Cascades.” — National Geographic Adventure magazine

here’s no place like Leavenworth, a Bavarian Village surrounded by the Cascade Mountains that is also an outdoor recreation capital with many, many fun shops, entertainment on the stage and in lederhosen on the charming streets. And there’s lots of food and drink. Just a down-in-the-mouth mill town in the early 1960s, Leavenworth dressed itself in the style and architecture southern Germany and became a

Northwest tourism powerhouse tucked into the eastern Cascades foothills. The “little village that could” now greets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. With more than two dozen public festivals each year, there’s almost never a weekend without entertainment in this burg known for its Willkommen ways and easy access to outdoor recreation.

What to do West of Leavenworth on Highway 2 are fruit stands and wineries. Smallwood’s Harvest in Peshastin is a must-stop for cars with kids. They have a big petting zoo, lots of room to run and a tasty fruit stand and gift shop. Prey’s Fruit Stand is also nearby on Highway 2. Feel the roar of whitewater. Head west on Highway 2 and take in the Wenatchee River as it roars through Tumwater Canyon. The dam on the river is a good spot to see kayakers headed downstream

Lake Wenatchee State Park gives you a great picnic spot on a picture-perfect lake popular with windsurfers. Hike on the wild — or mild — side. Head south along Icicle Creek toward the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Grab a permit at the trailhead for a dayhike. Check in with the U.S. Forest Service in Leavenworth for overnight permits. Or stop at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery for a gentle stroll along Icicle Creek on signed trails with great views. Go nose-to-nose with a salmon. ake Wenatchee is a short drive from Leavenworth in the the Wenatchee-Okanogan National Forest. Spend the day at Lake Wenatchee State Park just taking it easy with a picnic.

More to do Lake Wenatchee State Park has nearly 500 acres of camping and trails and a swimming beach. The lake covers 2,445 acre and is fed by glaciers on nearby Cascade Mountain peaks. August is berry-picking season in the high Cascades. Check with the U.S. Forest Service in Leavenworth for general recommendations on where to go. The Iron Goat Trail near Stevens Pass, at the Cascade crest on Highway 2, offers a look into railway history. Look for the signs for the trailhead that starts by the red caboose with the Great Northern mountain goat logo on the side.

In downtown Leavenworth, you’ll find the home of everything nutty — from an 800,000year history of nuts to 6,000 actual nutcrackers to occasional TV star Arlene Wagner, the Nutcracker Lady herself. The Nutcracker Museum has been featured on network television and in newspapers across the U.S. and Europe. Best of all, the Nutcracker Museum is all it’s cracked up to be — informative (top five ways to crack a nut), mesmerizing (rooms lined with ‘crackers) and kitschy (nuts squeezed in gator jaws). You’d be nuts to miss it. nutcrackermuseum.com.

Icy art The Chihuly Icicles at Leavenworth’s Sleeping Lady Resort is a 1,200-piece outdoor installation by one of the world’s top glass artists and stands just outside the Sleeping Lady Chapel. Dale Chihuly and his team of glassblowers assembled the 12-foot-high masterwork during the 1996 holiday season. sleepinglady.com.

More hikes Icicle Gorge Trail, near Leavenworth: Easy and easily accessible, great for families. Mostly flat, 4-mile trail loops around Icicle Creek, crossing at the scenic Icicle Gorge. About 16 miles up Icicle Road from Leavenworth. Penstock Pipeline Trail, near Leavenworth: An easy hike with an unusual start over an historic bridge. You can sometimes see Coho salmon spawning in the Wenatchee River from this old bridge that once carried water to generate electricity for the Great Northern Railroad. The railroad ran through Tumwater Canyon until 1929. The three-mile back-and-forth hike offers great views and fabulous fall colors along the river, and access to some good beaches if the weather is still hot enough for a dip.

orth Central Washington is loaded with wildlife. There are eagles and ospreys along the Columbia River and its tributaries, bighorn sheep along Highway 97A north of Wenatchee, and deer pretty much everywhere. You also have a chance of seeing black bears and mountain goats in many areas of the upper Wenatchee River, Entiat and Methow River valleys. Here are some triedand-true spots for wildlife:

Big game Drive north on Highway 97A out of Wenatchee and you don’t have to go far before you get into bighorn sheep country. They are often seen close to the highway. Ride the Lady of the Lake ferry up Lake Chelan and you’ll often get to see bighorn sheep and mountain goats on the steep, rocky shore.

Birds Eagles, osprey, hawks, and herons can be seen up and down the Columbia, Wenatchee, Entiat, Methow and Okanogan rivers. The 11-mile Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail in Wenatchee has an lots of birds and areas to view them. Walla Walla Point Park and Horan Natural Area are good places to start. The Beebe Springs Natural Area along Highway 97 northeast of Chelan is an easy stop off the road. Leavenworth’s Enchantment Park and Blackbird Island offer 2.5 miles of waterfront trails with opportunities to see osprey, eagles, gray catbirds, hummingbirds, yellow warblers, cedar waxwings and more. An area stretching between Moses Lake and Grand Coulee in Grant County is part of the Great

A string of man-made and natural lakes and more than 50 separate recreation areas along the Highway 17 corridor is home to hundreds of bird species. Check out the Cassimer Bar Wildlife Area, at the confluence of the Columbia and Okanogan rivers, just off Highway 97, to see double-crested cormorants, spotted sandpipers, turkey vultures, warblers, eastern kingbirds, western tanagers, black-headed grosbeaks, and many other birds, along with beavers and amphibians. Turn off

Highway 97 near milepost 264.

Fish In the late fall, see chinook, coho and sockeye salmon and steelhead swim through the viewing windows at Rocky Reach Dam north of Wenatchee. The fish hatcheries in Leavenworth, up the Entiat Valley, at Chelan Falls and at Winthrop are also good spots to see salmon in the late summer and fall. Salmon return to the Wenatchee and Icicle rivers in the late summer and fall. They are easily seen from Enchantment Park and Blackbird Island in Leavenworth.

ams make everything possible in the Columbia Basin. Irrigation on more than 670,000 acres has transformed the area an ag powerhouse, producing fruit, onions, beans, potatoes and much more. Dams and wind farms also provide the low-cost power that attracts food processors, high-tech manufacturers and data centers that serve clients around the world. Catch a concert at the Gorge. There is no other place like the Gorge Amphitheatre, a 20,000-

person concert venue on the lip of the Columbia River Gorge. In between acts, take in the sweeping views of the river below huge basalt cliffs. Watch potato-peeling pros compete to be the top spud during the Potato Peeling Contest at the annual Farmer Consumer Awareness Day in Quincy in September. Check out an Ancient Lakes waterfall near Quincy. Spring comes early to Ancient Lakes and it’s a popular place for hikers,

mountain-bikers, fishing, hunting and horseback riding. The lakes are set in a dramatic landscape of deep coulees, volcanic buttes and big skies. Take a mud bath on the shores of Soap Lake. People have been coming here since the early 1900s to bathe in the waters of the high-mineral-content lake, which is said to have healing properties. And it just feels good. Get up close with a giant wind turbine at Wild Horse Renewable Energy Center on Whiskey Dick Mountain.

A

t 5,268 square miles, Okanogan County is the largest county in Washington state. In terms of population, not so much. It has just under 8 people per square mile, compared with the statewide average of more than 100 per square mile.

Brewster and Pateros These twin cities on the Columbia River are a fishing mecca. Steelheaders flock to Pateros to fish at the mouth of the Methow River, and

to Brewster for the salmon returns. Nearby Gamble Sands Golf Course — is one of the best new courses in the nation, according to Golf Digest magazine. Come to Brewster for its Fourth of July celebration, which includes a parade and fireworks on the Columbia River. Have a slice when Pateros holds its Apple Pie Jamboree on the third weekend of July. Check out the Fort Okanogan Interpretive Center, just north of Brewster. Built in 1911, this first American fur trading outpost in Washington state has been given back to the Colville Tribes, which

redid many of the displays to offer more insight from a tribal perspective. The center hosts different events and exhibits, found on its Facebook page.

Okanogan Okanogan boasts an iconic county courthouse and billboards all over town featuring photographs by Japanese immigrant Frank Matsura of turn-of-the-century pioneers and American Indians. The Okanogan County Historical Museum has hundreds more early photos, along

The town also hosts the annual Okanogan Days on the first Saturday in June, and the Okanogan Harvest Festival on the first Saturday in October.

Omak Okanogan County’s largest town also hosts its largest event, the Omak Stampede & World Famous Suicide Race, Aug. 9-12. It features a world-class rodeo and a unique American Indian horse race, along with tribal dancing and drumming competitions, and unique stick games, a form of gambling. The four-day event also includes both a kids’ and grand parade, a carnival and a Western and Native art show. The Stampede arena

also is home to everything from truck races to Mexican and junior rodeos. Check out the offerings at omakstampede.org.

Conconully Two large reservoirs border this community and fishermen flock to the lakes to try their luck with rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and even some kokanee in the lower lake.

Tonasket Tonasket kicks off summer every year with an annual Founders Day rodeo and parade on the first weekend after Memorial Day. Then, between the town’s chamber

of commerce and its Community Cultural Center, events ranging from a tractor pull to community dinners and an annual garlic festival are scheduled nearly every weekend. And if you’re there midweek, the town’s art walk, featuring work by local artists at 20 venues in a fourblock area, is worth checking out.

Winthrop’s downtown is all about the Old West, complete with wooden sidewalks and the throw-back storefronts of shops and restaurants. Swap your cowboy boots for hiking boots (or a mountain bike) and check out more than 120 miles of trails cared for by the nonprofit Methow Trails — methowtrails.com. The trails and 11 trailheads are free to use in the summer.

Mazama Highway 20 connects the Methow Valley to Western Washington and the views along the way are spectacular. The Washington Pass Overlook has the best “too crazy to be true” view of Liberty Bell Mountain. A short trail brings you to the top of a fenced-in cliff face for a bird’s eye view of the highway’s hairpin turns, and Snagtooth Ridge across the valley.

Twisp Twisp is the locals do business, take care of chores and take part in the arts. Confluence Gallery is the largest venue for visual arts. The Merc Playhouse puts on large-scale productions along with a reader’s theater and regular dance performances. There’s also a pub and a local music association which draw top musical performers to the valley. TwispWorks is the newest player is in town, bringing to the mix some open artist’s studios and classes, a dye garden, historical listening posts and the Methow Valley Interpretive Center, which features the valley’s natural surroundings and its native peoples.
